Back in 1923, Bob<lb />Douglas got the Harlem Renais-<lb />sance off to a running start as<lb />they blazed trails across the na-<lb />tion.<lb /><lb />Douglas layed the founda-<lb />tion for the pro game of basket-<lb />ball. Much of what is done in<lb />professional basketball today,<lb />administratively and on the<lb />field, was instituted by<lb />Douglas, who enjoys a lofty<lb />position in the Basketball Hall<lb />of Fame, along with two of his<lb />players - Charles oTarzan ?<lb />Cooper and William oPop ?<lb />Gates who was inducted this<lb />past May.<lb /><lb />The dream of having his club<lb />participate in the first profes-<lb />sional basketball leagues, were<lb />denied him. Douglas broke up<lb /><lb />his club in the early forties, Al-<lb />most five decades later, the Na-<lb />tional Basketball Association<lb />and it Ts member clubs, ap-<lb />proved a group of investors<lb />headed up by Bertram M. Lee<lb />and Peter C.B. Bynoe to finalize<lb /><lb />the sale of the Denver Nuggets. '<lb /><lb />The fact that Bynoe and Lee<lb />are both Black, made this $65<lb />million purchase of the Denver<lb /><lb />franchise, another historic first. ,<lb /><lb />Not only for the National Bas-<lb />ketball Association, but for<lb />minorities in particular. A<lb />glorious first.<lb /><lb />Over the past 10 years,<lb />Blacks have made some pro-<lb />gress in our- field coach-<lb />ing/managing positions in col-<lb />lege and professional athletics.<lb />Gains have been recorded in ad-<lb />ministrative positions. But the<lb />actual ownership of professional<lb />sports teams have eluded<lb />minorities.<lb /><lb />What is significant about Ber-<lb /><lb />We Tve Come A Long Way<lb /><lb />Wake Up, Get Up, and Speak Up<lb />By: Sandra Dupree Boyd<lb /><lb />My great-grand mother use to<lb />tell me during my youth and<lb />adolescent years to wake up and<lb />see what the great sight means.<lb />I did Tt know what she meant back<lb />then. But I do now.<lb /><lb />It looks as though to me that<lb />the black race is still asleep. Our<lb />blacks are not educated enough<lb />on their rights. I feel that 75% of<lb />the blacks working in the<lb />Pitt/Greenville area don Tt know<lb />about EEOC which stands for<lb />Equal Employment Opportunity<lb />Commission, and NCOAH which<lb />stands for North Carolina Office<lb />of Administrative Hearings. Both<lb />are located in Raleigh, N.C. and<lb />we even have the CCJ which<lb />stands for the Concerned Citizens<lb />for Justice, and it Ts located right<lb />here in Greenville.<lb /><lb />I once read in a business<lb />establishment that the success or<lb />failure of your life will be<lb />measured by the manner we<lb />meet our responsibilities, people<lb />we meet, and how we treat one<lb />another, If this is true, a lot of us<lb />are going to fall short, and very<lb />short, So let Ts Wake Up!<lb /><lb />It Ts almost election time again.<lb />So look out! Here comes more<lb />campaign speeches, campaign<lb />promises, and most important,<lb />more campaign lies. We really<lb /><lb />need to think about who Ts<lb />benefiting from what the most.<lb />And believe me, I Tm thinking<lb />hard.<lb /><lb />If whites helped you.to get<lb />elected into an office, you should<lb />tell them up front, oI Tm not sell-<lb />ing out my black people. T If<lb />whites helped you to get started<lb />in a business, you should tell<lb />them up front, o ~I Tn not selling out<lb />my black people. T T Politicians, if<lb />you Tre going to give us insurance,<lb />then give us blessed assurance.<lb />We don Tt need a policy on divi-<lb />sion, we need a policy on liabili-<lb />ty. And then giv}e us reliability.<lb />Don Tt just pick us up; lift us up.<lb />So let Ts Get Up!<lb /><lb />If the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther<lb />King, Jr. were alive today, I<lb />believe he would be terribly<lb />disappointed. Rev. King had a<lb />dream, and during his time here<lb />on earth, he made a lot of that<lb />dream materialize. But we as a<lb />black race are not keeping the<lb />other portions of that dream<lb />alive,<lb /><lb />Think about it, If we were real-<lb />ly keeping the dream alive, would<lb />we continuously put up with<lb />harassment, intimidation, and<lb />racial discrimination from the<lb />white man? God doesn Tt like it,<lb />and we shouldn Tt either.<lb /><lb />Whether we want to admit it or<lb />not, it is very much alive in the<lb /><lb />* (Continued on page 7)<lb /><lb /> "<lb /><lb />+<lb /><lb />PETER CB. It Ts the most important<lb />task a man can tackle.<lb /><lb />A father should be the domi-<lb />nant figure in a family. His role<lb />is vital. Looking at Scripture, I<lb />see three main duties of a father.<lb />(1) Provision for the family. The<lb />first need of every family is its<lb />material need. A father must pro-<lb />vide for his family. Not many<lb />fathers fail here. We may not<lb /><lb />i<lb /><lb />E<lb />3<lb /><lb />Won't You Help? The<lb />Bible says that Ts the way it<lb />should be.<lb /><lb />First Timothy 5:8 reads, ~ ~But<lb />if anyone does not provide for his<lb />own, and especially for those of<lb />his household, he has denied the<lb />faith, and is worse than an<lb />unbeliever. ? T<lb /><lb />Perhaps a great danger is to<lb />set our family Ts material stan-<lb />dards too lhigh, over emphasiz-<lb />ing money Ts importance and<lb />leading children to want and ex-<lb />pect more than they need. A wise<lb />father doesn Tt infect his family<lb />with the love of money.<lb /><lb />A father should be a godly<lb />leader. A father Ts relationship to<lb />his family symbolizes Christ Ts<lb />position with His people.<lb /><lb />Fathers, do you love your<lb />children? Do you spend time with<lb />them? You maythink you have<lb />good reasons for making business<lb />a higher priority, but God sees<lb />through that. So do your children.<lb />They need your time more that<lb />they need your money. (2) Pro-<lb />tection for the Family. A father<lb />must protect his family. God pro-<lb />tects and nurtures His own<lb />children and every father has the<lb /><lb />same responsibility.<lb /><lb />Most fathers provide physical<lb />protection. I kon Tt know any man<lb />who would not give his life<lb />fighting for his children.<lb /><lb />But spiritual dangers also con-<lb />front our<lb />Fathers, do you seek to provide<lb />spiritual protection for your<lb />family?<lb /><lb />If Satan gets a foothold in your<lb />life, he will have a foothold in<lb />your family. You need to set an<lb />example fo spiritual strength and<lb />stability.<lb /><lb />Don Tt expose your children to<lb />dangerous teaching. Be sure your<lb />church teaches and believes<lb />God Ts Word. Notice what comes<lb />into your home through TV, and<lb />train your children in the truth.<lb />(3) Prayer for the Family. Final-<lb />ly, every father has a respon-<lb />sibility to pary for his family. Job<lb />was a praying father. Job 1:5<lb />tells us that Job continually<lb />prayed for each son and<lb />daughter.<lb /><lb />Men, take a good look at<lb />yoursellf.<lb /><lb />1. Do you bathe regularly?<lb /><lb />2. Listen<lb /><lb /> ~attentively and respectfully, and<lb /><lb />above all, don Tt ridicule or judge!<lb /><lb />SPEND TIME TOGETHER.<lb />Often time is the best way to say<lb /> oT love you. ? T Most favorite fami-<lb />ly memories reflect time spent.<lb />Parents, think back on your most<lb />favorite childhood family<lb /><lb />memory and start from there to<lb />build new ones with your own<lb /><lb />each week just for family? Such<lb />time most often will not involve<lb />spending money or leaving home.<lb />Reserve a time each week when<lb />everyone is available, then<lb />decide what the family will do.<lb />Time segments may be brief or<lb />extended. Since most families<lb />have a kitchen calendar, mark-<lb />ing the time on that or a central<lb />calendar is a great way to start.<lb /><lb />Practice these and look for<lb /><lb />BY: CYNTHIA L. DOCTOR<lb /><lb />STRENGTHENING FAMILIES<lb />TIES<lb /><lb />Have you ever wondered why<lb />some families face and suc-<lb />cessfully cope with problems<lb />while others fall apart? How<lb />many times have you wondered<lb />why some parents and children<lb />get along so well while others<lb />don Tt? Many reasons contribute<lb />to the answers to these questions.<lb /><lb />Researchers tell us, however,<lb />that one of the main keys to a<lb />family Ts strength in emotional<lb />closeness. The degree of emo-<lb />tional closeness between family<lb />members is considered one of the<lb />building blocks of family<lb />strength.<lb /><lb />Could your family be closer?<lb />Do you know who your children<lb />really are; and do they really<lb />know you. As people and a fami-<lb />ly members, we are all growing,<lb />changing, and adapting to the cir-<lb />cumstances of our environments.<lb />In today Ts fast paced society, the<lb />many roles we must play outside<lb />the home sometimes leaves little<lb />energy or time to invest in the<lb />family. For example, school will<lb />open soon. All of us know how<lb />hectic those first few weeks can<lb />be. Children Ts activities are pro-<lb />jects must somehow be incor-<lb />porated into already over extend-<lb /><lb />ed parental calendars.<lb /><lb />For the next few weeks this col-<lb />umn will offer suggestions that<lb />may help strengthen the family.<lb /><lb />GET TO KNOW ONE<lb />ANOTHER. Often family<lb />members know one another Ts<lb />food preferences and pet peeves.<lb />Parents, especially, focus on<lb />practical family matters such as<lb />providing as best they can for<lb />food, shelter, clothing, and<lb />recreation. These issues and their<lb />costs often leave little emotional<lb />energy or time to explore their<lb />own or their children Ts thoughts<lb />and feelings. Many loving<lb />families remain emotional<lb />strangers. How often have you<lb />sat down and talked --- really<lb />talked --- about your hopes, am-<lb />bitions, fears and goals? Seven<lb />out our ten parents may talk to<lb />their children in this manner, but<lb />how many parents share such in-<lb />formation with their children?<lb />These kinds of discussions help<lb />family members understand one<lb />another and to grow close.<lb /><lb />The best way to gain this<lb />knowledge and to become close is<lb />to start asking questions, and<lb />answering them. Begin such con-<lb />versations when there is enough<lb />time to give time and attention to<lb />the conversation. Always assure<lb />family privacy during such<lb />discussions. Normally, this fee is<lb />financed as part of the mortgage payment.<lb /><lb />Two advantages of this type of mortgage can be a lower<lb />interest rate and a lower down payment. Also, you have the<lb />option to finance your closing costs. FHA loans can have<lb />either a fixed or adjustable interest rate.<lb /><lb />VA Mortgage<lb />A VA mortgage loan is made by a lender to eligible military veterans. It is<lb />guaranteed by the Veterans Administration. To determine eligibility, contact the<lb />VA or a participating lending institution. In certain situations 100 percent finan-<lb />cing is available. The loans are offered for a maximum of 30 years and are made<lb />as either fixed-rate or graduated-payment loans. It should be noted that these loans<lb />are made for owner-occupied use only. This means you cannot use a VA loan to<lb />finance an investment property.<lb /><lb />Conventional Mortgage<lb /><lb />A conventional mortgage is not insured or guaranteed by a government agency.<lb />It is available for all qualified borrowers at the market interest rate. The maximum<lb />loan-to-value ratio allowed is 95 percent, which means loans can be secured with<lb />a 5 percent down payment. Loans secured with less than a 20 percent down<lb />payment, however, require the borrower to purchase private mortgage insurance,<lb />which protects the lender in the event the borrower defaults on the loan.<lb /><lb />Several mortgage loan variations are available. The three most popular are the<lb />adjustable-rate mortgage, the fixed-rate mortgage and the graduated-payment<lb /><lb />mortgage.<lb /><lb />Alice D. Jones<lb /><lb />Adjustable-Rate Mortgage (ARM)<lb /><lb />Anadjustable rate mortgage, or ARM, allows the lender to increase or decrease<lb />the interest rate during the life of the loan. If the rate changes, it will affect the<lb />monthly mortgage payment. The change is determined by a specified index. To<lb />protect the borrower and the lender, minimums and maximums are set for the<lb />interest-rate fluctuation.<lb /><lb />For example, if the initial interest rate on a one-year adjustable loan is 10 per-<lb />cent with an annual cap or floor of 2 percent, the borrower is guaranteed that the<lb />rate will not increase or decrease more than 2 percentage points a year. If this<lb />same loan has a lifetime cap and floor of 6 percent, then over the life of the loan<lb />the interest rate will never exceed 16 percent or drop below 4 percent.<lb /><lb />Fixed-Rate Mortgage<lb />A fixed-rate mortgage guarantees one interest rate over the life of the loan. This<lb />allows the principal and interest payment to remain constant. FHA, VA and<lb />conventional loans can have fixed rates.<lb /><lb />Graduated-Payment Mortgage<lb />In a graduated-payment mortgage, the monthly payments increase over the<lb />term of the loan at set intervals. Usually, the payments begin low and gradually<lb />increase for five to 10 years. Then they become fixed.<lb /><lb />During the first years of repayment, the payment amount will not cover the total<lb />interest due. Instead, some interest will be deferred. This plan actually increases<lb />the outstanding balance of the loan through what is called negative amortization.<lb /><lb />The graduated-payment mortgage is designed for borrowers whose income<lb />is likely to increase steadily during the term of the loan, so it may allow a borrower<lb />to qualify for a higher loan amount.<lb /><lb />Alice D.
