It becomes clearer<lb />and clearer that there is a rela-<lb />tionship between cultural pride,<lb />self-esteem and drug usage.<lb /><lb />Last week, a panel of very dis-<lb />tinguished Black doctors, includ-<lb />ing Dr. Carl C. Bell, one of the<lb />nation Ts leading psychiatrists and<lb />director of the Community Mental<lb />Health Council in Chicago, an-<lb />nounced at the annual meeting of<lb />the National Medical Association<lb />that the poor health, mental as<lb />well as physical, of Blacks is due<lb />in part to low self-esteem.<lb /><lb />Take illegal drugs, forexample.<lb />Black Americans T drug usage is 30<lb />percent higher than the popula-<lb />tion as a whole.<lb /><lb />If you accept the fact that hun-<lb />dreds of years of psychological<lb />damage from slavery, Jim Crow,<lb /><lb />Blacks get instead is racial anxi-<lb />ety.<lb /><lb />This syndrome leads to suicide.<lb />This suicide can be immediate a<lb />gun to the head or sleeping pills;<lb />or it can be gradual drug addic-<lb />tion, for example.<lb /><lb />People use drugs, drugs don Tt<lb />use people. Drug abuse is not the<lb />real problem; it Ts what therapists<lb />call the presenting problem what<lb />others see and recognize as inap-<lb />propriate or destructive behavior.<lb />Policy-makers have recognized<lb />that anti-drug efforts must attack<lb />the demand for, as well as the<lb />supply of, drugs.<lb /><lb />Therefore, it is really just com-<lb />mon sense that a strong sense of<lb />cultural identity may prevent<lb />Blacks from being victims of drug<lb />abuse.<lb /><lb />A lack of pride in cultural heri-<lb />tage leads to poor self-esteem<lb />which predisposes one to drug<lb />addiction. Conversely, pride in<lb /><lb />cultural heritage is the basis of<lb />pride in oneself and this feeling of<lb />pride is the basis of a self-deter<lb />mined decision to say  ono  todrugs.<lb /><lb />My movie,  ~The White Girl, <lb />dealing with the same theme Black<lb />self-hatred and drug addiction will<lb />open in theaters during Black<lb />History Month in February.<lb /><lb />Our slogan:  oIf you love your<lb />self, you won Tt abuse yourself with<lb />drugs. Unlike many of the US-<lb />based churches there, the Socie-<lb />ty has a reputation not only for<lb />refusing to take a stand against<lb />the atrocities committed by<lb />Mobutu but for working hand in<lb />glove with this murderer of<lb />African people.<lb /><lb />The explicitly political nature<lb />of the Gevakin Choir tour became<lb />evident during its appearance at<lb />the 19th Street Baptist Church in<lb />Washington, DC (whose pastor,<lb />Reverend Moore, was recently<lb />appointed US ambassador to the<lb />southern African country of<lb />Lesotho by President George<lb />Bush). DOCTOR<lb />CHILDHOOD FEARS<lb />Childhood fears "of bugs, of the<lb />dark, of being left alone  " are a<lb />normal part of child develop-<lb />ment. In fact, certain fears are<lb />characteristic of age and stage of<lb /><lb />development.<lb /><lb />For example: Birth to 1 year<lb />old fears include: separation<lb />from parents; loud noises such as<lb />fire alarms, vacuum cleaners,<lb />and sirens; strangers, and<lb />heights. 2 year old fears include:<lb />separation from parents, loud<lb />noises, unfamiliar people,<lb />flashing lights, changes in en-<lb />vironment, doctors, dark rooms,<lb /><lb /> oand large objects such as heavy<lb /><lb />equipment. 3 to 5 year old fears<lb />include: darkness, monsters,<lb />ghosts, animals, thunder and<lb />lightning, being alone, getting<lb />lost, injury to self and parents<lb />and death.<lb /><lb />Finding out the cause of the<lb />fears is half the battle for<lb />parents. Very young children,<lb />however, do not have the words<lb />to communicate what they are<lb />afraid of. They just know<lb />something is scary. Their<lb />behavior will give you clues<lb />about their fears.<lb /><lb />For example: If your child is<lb />expressing fear of separation<lb />when you must leave him or her<lb /><lb />THE  ~M T VOICE-THURSDAY, AUGUST 3-WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 9, 1989-7<lb /><lb />with a babysitter or at a day care<lb />center, you can help in the follow-<lb />ing ways:<lb /><lb />1) Let your child know you will<lb />be back (after school or work),<lb />and be consistent in returning on<lb />time.<lb /><lb />2) Leave something of yours<lb />with them. Also,<lb />something of yours lets your child<lb />know for sure that you will<lb />return.<lb /><lb />3) Help your child by talking<lb />about all the fun things (s)he will<lb />do each day while you ~re away.<lb /><lb />BUGS AWAY!<lb /><lb />Mosiquitoes, gnats and flies<lb />can aggravate your child during<lb />warm weather. If your child will<lb />be playing outside, a little insect<lb />repellent is a good way to keep<lb />the bugs away. Don ~t go over-<lb />board with the repellent by using<lb />too much. As long as God was<lb />sending prophets to remind us of<lb />our duties, there wasn Tt a need to<lb /><lb /> oprotect the written word.<lb /><lb />Especially since most of it came<lb />about through oral tradition.<lb />When Jesus came, he verified the<lb />portions of scripture which were<lb />true. He also made it clear that<lb />there was much to come after<lb />him, that even what he brought<lb />was incomplete. So it stands to<lb />reason that what was revealed<lb />before him was also incomplete<lb />and vulnerable.<lb /><lb />None can say with certainty<lb />that Jesus wrote his Gospel.<lb />General belief is he did write a<lb />Gospel, which his disciples<lb />followed and taught from. They<lb />clustered close together after he<lb />left them teaching in and near the<lb />temple. They had a strong Jewish<lb />following. This alone suggests<lb />that the disciples taught the<lb />oneness of god and did not place<lb />Jesus on an equal footing with<lb />god.<lb /><lb />The disciples were instructed<lb />by Jesus to teach only the<lb />Israelites. The burden of teaching<lb />and spreading God Ts word was<lb />the responsibility of Abraham Ts<lb />descendants. They had paid the<lb />price for the privilege "they<lb />knew how strongly God hated<lb />pagan worship. In the pagan at-<lb />mosphere of the Romans, the<lb />teachings of Christ and all of his<lb />miracles came into the hands of<lb />the Gentiles. The Gentiles could<lb />only comprehend the teachings of<lb />Christ by comparing his<lb />teachings to their pagan con-<lb /><lb />IBD! OBTAINING A MORTGAGE<lb /><lb />= cepts.
