Happy Mother Ts Day to each of the lovely<lb />ladies.<lb /><lb />(Voice photo by Jim Rouse)<lb /><lb />Although some of the teenage<lb />boys involved in last week Ts<lb />rape and beating of 28-year-old<lb />Patricia Meili in Central Park<lb />have admitted to the crime, a<lb />lawyer for one of the teens said<lb />Tuesday, evidence in the case<lb />was extremely weak.<lb /><lb />Attorney Colin Moore charg-<lb />ed that subjection by police of<lb />the boys to 24-hours of intense<lb />questioning in the absence of a<lb />legal counsel, amounted to bla-<lb />tant violation of their constitu-<lb />tional rights.<lb /><lb />According to Moore,<lb />psychological studies have<lb />shown that if a 14 or 15 year old<lb />is subjected to continuous inter-<lb />rogations of this nature, the<lb />youngster will yield and say al-<lb />most anything his prober wants<lb />to hear.<lb /><lb /> ~These are techniques nor-<lb />mally associated with Nazi Ger-<lb />many or the Josef Stalin era in<lb />Communist Russia. They are<lb />not the type of tactic that<lb />should be employed by any<lb />police in a democratic society, ?<lb />Moore said.<lb /><lb />Manhattan District Attorney<lb />Robert Morgenthau has already<lb />charged eight of the teens with<lb />attempted murder in the second<lb />degree, rape in the first degree,<lb /><lb />and assault in the first degree of<lb />Ms. Meili.<lb /><lb />While the Brooklyn-based At-<lb />torney Moore said he does not<lb />condone the vicious attack<lb />against Ms. Meili, he felt the so-<lb />called evidence which consists<lb />of statements made under pres-<lb />sure to police by the teens, was<lb />weak.<lb /><lb /> oAny attorney worth his<lb />salt, T Moore declared, ~ ~could<lb />prove that these statements<lb />given under such conditions by<lb />14 and 15-year- olds should be<lb />surpressed as being the product<lb />of physical and psychological<lb />duress.. T T<lb /><lb />Attorney Moore said he was<lb />also troubled by the double<lb />standard taken by law enforce-<lb />ment officials in the attack on<lb />Ms. Meili. ~ ~Whenever the vic-<lb />tim is white and the per-<lb />petrators are African-<lb />Americans, an arrest is usually<lb />made within less than 24<lb />hours. ? T<lb /><lb />He cited the cases of fashion<lb />model Marla Hanson, Dr.<lb />Kathryn Hinnant of Bellevue<lb />Hospital{and the, Marshank<lb />brothers of Staten Island all of<lb />whom were attacked by<lb />African-Americans. The _per-<lb /><lb />petrators said Moore, were ar-<lb />rested in 24 hours.<lb /><lb />On the other hand, Attorney<lb />Moore continued, when the vic-<lb />tim happens to be African-A-<lb />merican and the perpetrator is<lb />white, arrests are seldom made.<lb />He cited the following cases to<lb />support his point:<lb /><lb />The alleged rape and abduc-<lb />tion of Tawana Brawley in Wap-<lb />pinger Falls, N.Y., the attack on<lb /><lb />Derick Antonio Tyrus of Staten<lb />Island, the beating of Akeem<lb />Davis in Brooklyn's Park Slope<lb />community, and Frederick Pin-<lb />ckley in Williamsburg.<lb /><lb /> ~So how can African-Ameni-<lb />cans be expected to show<lb />remorse for the attack of white<lb />victims when the system does<lb />not care a damn about them? T T<lb />Attorney Moore asked.<lb /><lb />The Brooklyn lawyer charged<lb />that a number of people are<lb />focusing on the assault against<lb />Ms. Meili in Central Park, but<lb />not on the underlying conditions<lb />which gave rise to the crime.<lb /><lb />Being an African-American<lb />youth in the U.S. today, said<lb />Moore, calls for living in a cons-<lb />tant.state of anger, paranoia<lb />and hostility against in-<lb />stitutional racism, economic<lb />violence, massive unemploy-<lb /><lb />ment, homelessness, deplorable<lb />living conditions and inferior<lb />education.<lb /><lb /> oHow can a system expect<lb />to treat African-American peo-<lb />ple like animals and not expect<lb />these co-called animals to strike<lb />back against their conditions.<lb />As long as this city continues to<lb />treat us with contempt, it must<lb />be prepared to reap the social<lb />costs, T T Attorney Moore<lb />declared.<lb /><lb />Borough President David<lb />Dinkins condemned the attack<lb />on Ms. Meili and called it the<lb />most ~ ~outrageous example of<lb />the crisis proportions that<lb />crime has assumed in this<lb />town. ?<lb /><lb />Dinkins urged New York City<lb />residents to unite and reclaim<lb />all parks in the five boroughs<lb />from those who are nothing<lb />more than ~ ~urban terrorists and<lb />deserve to be treated as such. ? T<lb /><lb />Mayor Koch referred to the<lb />Central Park incident as a<lb /> ~ ~gang-bang rape T and dis-<lb />agreed sharply with Attorney<lb />Moore who said that societal<lb />problems are to blame for the<lb />assault against Ms. Meili.<lb /><lb /> ~You name me one special<lb />reason that would cause 36 peo-<lb /><lb />ple to engage in a wolfpack<lb />(Continued on page 8)<lb /><lb />By: Deacon James Vines<lb />i We ran all the way to my house<lb />and we sat on the front porch for<lb />a while then we decided to take<lb />the girls home for it was almost<lb />i time for them to be home. In the parable of the talents,<lb />Jesus is T teaching us this very<lb />rule. The master of the<lb />household, before leaving on a<lb />trip, gives each of his servants<lb /><lb />talents. Each in accordance to his<lb />ability. Now, the master has a<lb /><lb />For All<lb />Your<lb />Advertising<lb />Needs<lb />Call Our<lb />Sales Staff<lb />at<lb />757-0425.<lb /><lb />a Lil<lb />= Moward Ts = SHAWN'S " NO. 1&NO.2<lb />. ommoward Ts bal | NU. 1 & NO. 2<lb />i __ Restaure = KEARNEY PARK/BROAD STREETS<lb />= FREE CHEESE =<lb />= OY Swit euro *<lb />= TAM ~TIL 9AM =<lb />- TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY *. Now, the<lb />master has a scheme. Jesus does<lb />not tell us this in detail, but never-<lb />theless you know the master has<lb />a plan. Why didn Tt he just pro-<lb />mote them? Why did he feel<lb />necessary to test them? He didn Tt<lb />promote them outright, because<lb />he wanted to know without doubt<lb />which of his servants deserved a<lb />promotion. He also wanted to<lb />clear the air. If he had raised one<lb />servant over another, the other<lb />servant would have felt slighted.<lb />Then there would have been no<lb />peace in his household. By testing<lb />them, he separated the good ser-<lb />vants from the bad. He cleaned<lb />house.<lb /><lb />God is like the master of the<lb />household. He loves us and wants<lb />us to be happy here on earth, and<lb />later with Him in paradise. He<lb />provides us with guidance so that<lb />we can find our way. However,<lb />since He gave us free will, He will<lb />never send His guidance running<lb />after us unless we ourselves free-<lb />ly move towards it. God Ts<lb />guidance is like a talent to us. We<lb />can take it and bury it, and by do-<lb />ing sO never grow in knowledge<lb />of God. Or, we can use it, study<lb />it, question it, and by so doing<lb />come into a greater knowledge of<lb />God.<lb /><lb />Now, many of us fall into the<lb />first category. For various<lb />reasons, we may decide to bury<lb />God Ts guidance or talents. We<lb />pretend that it either doesn Tt mat-<lb />ter what we do,'or that God will<lb />promote us even if we do nothing.<lb />Jesus makes it perfectly clear,<lb />that those of us who bury God Ts<lb />talents, will: without doubt be<lb />thrown into hell. Christ teaches<lb />that only those following God Ts<lb />commands will enter into<lb />paradise.<lb /><lb />What does this mean? It means<lb />we should seek out God Ts will in<lb />everything. Don Tt take it ~for T:<lb />granted that everyone around is<lb />following the truth. Ask ques-<lb />tions, knock on every door, seek<lb />out the truth, don Tt settle for se-<lb />cond best. Because second best<lb />won Tt buy us salvation. Today no<lb />excuse will be accepted from us.<lb />Truth is here for the asking. Seek<lb />and you shall find. It is not right<lb />for the God-fearing to run from<lb />knowledge.<lb /><lb />The month for fasting is com-<lb />ing to an end. Soon will be a great<lb />feast. The Muslim community<lb />worldwide will celebrate the end<lb />of the fast through prayer and<lb />social events. I would like to ex-<lb />tend an invitation to you to come<lb />and join us Sunday, May 7, at<lb />Jaycee Park, here in Greenville,<lb />at 1 PM.
