GABRIEL TS CATHOLIC SCHOOL . . . Shown are Greenville Police<lb /><lb />Officers: Ward, left and Sharpe, right, taking fingerprints of local children in the event they<lb />are lost or abducted. This was part of an all-day fun-filled fund raising day at St. Gabriel Ts.<lb /><lb />The next day I couldn Tt wait un-<lb />til lunch time so I could see this<lb />beautiful woman again so just as<lb />soon as my lunch hour came, I<lb />took off for her house. I got there<lb />about ten minutes later and<lb />waited a few seconds before I<lb />knocked on the door. She must<lb />have been looking for me because<lb />the door was already half open<lb />and she was standing nearby<lb />drinking what looked like a Coca-<lb />Cola. I dropped my hand because<lb />I was so surprised to see her stan-<lb />ding there as if she was waiting<lb />for me to touch her.<lb /><lb /> ~Come and have a seat and I<lb />will get you something cold to<lb />drink. What would you like to<lb />have? ? I said that I would just<lb />like some ice water. So she<lb />brought me the water and a sand-<lb />wich and a slice of pice. After I<lb />had finished we sat there for a<lb />few minutes before she asked me<lb />if I ever got lonesome and I told<lb />her that I did, but I told her she<lb /><lb />had no reason to be lonesome<lb />because she was married. She<lb /><lb />lonesome during the day but she<lb />was alright during the night.<lb />Then she told me that she need-<lb />ed someone just to talk to during<lb />the day. So I asked her why didn Tt<lb />she work and she told me that her<lb />husband didn Tt want her to work.<lb />Then she asked me if I was her<lb />husband would I let her work and<lb />I told her it would be left up to<lb />her. I should have known the<lb />reason that her husband wanted<lb />her to stay at home because he<lb />was afraid of losing her. After I<lb />had been there a while she final-<lb />ly asked me something that I<lb />didn Tt think that she had on her<lb />mind. I didn Tt answer her<lb />because I had never had a mar-<lb />ried woman to ask me such<lb />serious questions and I was get-<lb />ting uneasy so I wouldn Tt say<lb />anything. Now both of you come<lb />here and tell me the truth. The<lb />man said that he had already told<lb />him the truth and that was all<lb />that he could do. The police then<lb />told him to get into the car<lb />because he was arresting him for<lb />assault on a female. When the<lb />police came over to him and put<lb />him in the car, he took him by the<lb />arm and pushed him toward the<lb />car when the man turned and<lb />raised his hand as if he was go-<lb />ing to hit the policeman; that Ts<lb />when the policeman hit him and<lb />knocked him down. <p>ee<lb /><lb />ee rR a SO ey<lb /><lb />~~ ©<lb /><lb />THURSDAY, APRIL 27-WEDNESDAY, MAY 3, 1989-THE ~M T VOICE<lb /><lb />Parents are the best role,<lb />models for successful school at-<lb />tendance and achievement for<lb />their children. Basic self-esteem<lb />taught at home will help to set the<lb />stage for school success. Even<lb />teenagers need guidance and sup-<lb />port for continued academic<lb />success.<lb /><lb />Healthy doses of genuine praise<lb />are an excellent starting point for<lb />positive self-esteem. Remember<lb />to praise the good things your<lb />child does "regardless of your<lb />child Ts age. Many parents<lb />assume that older children do not<lb />need the praise that is so readily<lb />given to very young children.<lb />Don Tt assume that the child<lb />knows that you are proud. Say it!<lb />Experts tell us that a good rule of<lb />thumb is five positive comments<lb />for each negative one. Even<lb />negative behavior should be ap-<lb />proached in a positive way.<lb /><lb />Parents T attitudes toward lear-<lb />ning and school attendance make<lb />strong, lasting impressions on<lb />our children. Help your child<lb />learn through your actions that<lb />education and school involve-<lb />ment are important. A positive<lb />attitude toward notices from<lb />school or those extra school<lb />related projects will help set the<lb />stage. Attend open houses and<lb />parent/teacher conferences. Act<lb />as a school volunteer whenever<lb />possible. Even older children<lb />take pride in seeing their parents<lb />involved in school activities.<lb />Limit absences from school. Let-<lb />ting your child miss school for<lb />vacations and shopping trips<lb />should be discouraged. Schedule<lb />medical appointments im-<lb /><lb />African Art Show (continued from page 1)<lb /><lb />mediately after school hours.<lb />These actions let your child know<lb />how important regular atten-<lb />dance is.<lb /><lb />Realize that each child Ts<lb />ability is different. Don Tt com-<lb />pare one child with another,<lb />especially children who are ob-<lb />viously having learning pro-<lb />blems. Such comparisons can be<lb />cruel and can instill a self-<lb />defeating attitude in the child.<lb />Encourage your child to do his<lb />personal best. It is important to<lb />remember that personal best<lb />does not necessarily mean being<lb />perfect or making high grades.<lb />Give your child the freedom to<lb />make some mistakes and to learn<lb />from them. The other extreme,<lb />however, is making excuses for<lb />your child Ts failures. Excuses for<lb />failure mayu afford your child<lb />unnecessary crutches. Readily<lb />available crutches can stifle<lb />creativity. Make sure through<lb />teachers and your involvement<lb />that your child is actually doing<lb />his/her personal best.<lb /><lb />Know your child Ts teachers.<lb />Let them know you are interested<lb />and supportive of your child.<lb />Teachers need to hear from you,<lb />but they will resent abeing being<lb />bullied. When your child Ts<lb />behavior at home declines, most<lb />often there are behavior changes<lb />at school too. Call the teachers if<lb />you have concerns. Ask about<lb />special services such as social<lb />workers and guidance<lb />counselors. Help your teenager<lb />plan for college by visiting the<lb />guidance or career counselor<lb />with him/her.<lb /><lb />stated. The show is being held in and a wide variety of subjects<lb />conjunction with the Pitt County and media, including landscapes<lb />Arts Festival week of activities. of Eastern North Carolina. Each day of his life was<lb />spent in submission to God.<lb />Jesus Ts gospel, teaches us to sub-<lb />mit to the will of God. He teaches<lb />in parables, and performs<lb />miracles by God Ts permission.<lb />He leaves no doubt as to who he<lb />was, and why he. was.<lb />Throughout his life he was a<lb />devout Jew. He stayed close to<lb />the temple, he observed all of the<lb />Jewish holidays, he followed the<lb />Jewish law, he did not eat<lb />anything forbidden. <p>This Way For Black Empowerment-- Blacks and Jews<lb /><lb />BY: LENORA FULANI<lb /><lb />Earlier this month the New<lb />Jewish Agenda, which defines<lb />itself as an organization of pro-<lb />gressive Jews, initiated expulsion<lb />proceedings against 18 of their<lb />members who also belong to the<lb />New Alliance Party. In a letter<lb />they wrote to each person<lb />threatened with expulsion, NJA Ts<lb />national co-chairs charged that<lb />NAP Ts ~anti-Semitic record is<lb />consistent over time...<lb /><lb /> ~Although NAP frames its anti-<lb />Semitic remarks in the context of<lb />an anti-nationalist position, NAP<lb />is clearly not anti-nationalist, for<lb />it supports without criticism the<lb />nationalism of Louis Farrakhan,<lb />who also. preaches _anti-<lb />Semitism. ?<lb /><lb />As the chairperson of the New<lb />Alliance Party, I wrote to protest<lb />the proposed expulsion of Jewish<lb />members of NAP who were also<lb />members of NJA. This is part of<lb />what my letter said:<lb /><lb /> ~What ~crimes T have those<lb />Jewish sisters and brothers com-<lb />mitted to so outrage the NJA in-<lb />quisitors as to precipitate a call<lb />for their expulsion? Beneath all<lb />the specific accusations, there is<lb />really only one charge of<lb />substance "they are actively in-<lb /><lb />volved in the Black-led, indepen-<lb /><lb />my dent New Alliance Party.<lb /><lb /> oI have never been thrown out<lb /><lb />_ of any Black organization nor<lb /><lb />threatened with expulsion for<lb />working closely with Jews. That<lb />is because the African-American<lb />community is willing to work in<lb />broad, progressive non-partisan<lb />coalitions. But the establishment<lb />liberal Jewish leadership has<lb />proven that its loyalties are to the<lb />Democratic Party, and only to<lb /><lb />| the Democratic Party.<lb /><lb /> ~ o ~No doubt much of your objec-<lb />tion to the New Alliance Party<lb />stems from my support of and<lb />from Minister Louis Farrakhan.<lb /><lb />_ Again and again I have made<lb />. clear that I have certain dif-<lb /><lb />ferences with Minister Far-<lb />rakhan. But I have also pointed<lb />out that he is supported and<lb />respected no only by me, but by<lb />many in the African-American<lb />community. While I have dif-<lb />ferences with him, I am not will-<lb />ing to reject him. That you are<lb />willing to do so-is a repudiation<lb />not just of Minister Farrakhan<lb />but of the millions of Black<lb />people "Muslim and _ non-<lb />Muslim "who follow him and<lb />respect him. The African-<lb />American community is<lb />justifiably resentful of your<lb />actions.<lb /><lb /> oLiberal and progressive Jews<lb />must learn that the Black com-<lb />munity will not be dictated to; we<lb />will choose our own leaders, and<lb />determine our own agenda, and<lb />whether you like it or not you will<lb />have to respect it. ?<lb /><lb />On April 8 the national steering<lb />committee of the NJA held expul-<lb />sion hearing in New York City.<lb />The Jewish members of NAP<lb />who were about to be expelled<lb />had been told that they or a<lb />representative could appear at<lb />the hearing to speak "for a max-<lb />imum of four minutes each "in<lb />their defense. Since the real issue<lb />was not NAP Ts ~ ~anti-Semitism ? T<lb />but NJA Ts racism, each of the 18<lb />Jewish sisters and brothers chose<lb />to be represented by an African-<lb /><lb />American friend of colleague.<lb /><lb />Only one person at a time was<lb />allowed into the basement of the<lb />small synagogue in Greenwich<lb />Village where the hearing took<lb />place. None of the ~ ~accused ? T<lb />were permitted to be present. In<lb />some cases their Black represen-<lb />tatives were asked questions; in<lb />others the steering committee<lb />members sat in stony silence<lb />while Black lawyers, teachers,<lb />and community leaders express-<lb />ed their outrage at the crime that<lb />was being perpetrated by so-<lb />called progressive Jews in<lb />repudiating other Jews for the<lb />crime of following independent<lb />Black leadership.<lb /><lb />Within a few days, the NJA<lb />steering committee had made its<lb />decision. Unmoved "unwilling<lb />and unable to learn anything<lb />from the African-Americans who<lb />had something important to<lb />teach them about racism and<lb />anti-Semitism "they decided to<lb />expel those of their members who<lb />also belong to NAP. In a letter<lb />dated April 11, the steering com-<lb />mittee Ts national co-chairs an-<lb />nounced their ~ ~final solution T T to<lb />the NAP problem in a letter sent<lb />to each Jewish member of NAP<lb />they were expelling: ~ ~...your ac-<lb />tions...caused serious damage to<lb />the Manhattan NJA chapter and<lb />the national organization. ?<lb /><lb />NAP Ts Jewish members are<lb />giving expression to the real pro-<lb />gressive sentiment in the interna-<lb /><lb />tional Jewish community, which<lb />the Zionists, the phony-<lb /><lb />progressive apologists for<lb />Zionism like NJA and their<lb />patrons in the Democratic Party<lb />want to pretend doesn Tt exist. The<lb />NJA is seeking to intimidate ge-<lb />nuine Jewish progressivism into<lb />silence and inaction by accusing<lb />those who speak out of being<lb /> o ~traitors T T "not oreal ? Jews, not<lb /> ~ ~good ? T Jews. It is, tragically, not<lb />the first time that progressive<lb />Jews have been betrayed in this<lb />way.<lb /><lb />The NJA now stands fully<lb />revealed in all its racist ar-<lb />rogance; it is ready to punish and<lb />repudiate other Jews for the<lb />crime of followig Black leader-<lb />ship in building and leading a pro-<lb />Socialist, anti-Zionist and anti-<lb />imperialist third party in<lb />America. This supposedly pro-<lb />gressive Jewish organization has<lb />shown itself to be nothing more<lb />than a front for the racist, anti-<lb />Semitic and anti-progressive<lb />Democratic Party. They have<lb />brought shame to the progressive<lb />movement which Jews all over<lb />the world have helped to lead and<lb />build.<lb /><lb />I am deeply, deeply proud of<lb />NAP Ts Jewish leaders and<lb />builders "if the leaders of NJA<lb />were not blinded by their racism,<lb />they would be also.<lb /><lb />Dr. Lenora Fulani is the na-<lb />tional chairperson of the New<lb />Alliance Party and a practicing<lb />Social Therapist in Harlem.
