Since its discovery in the<lb />United States in 1981, AIDS has<lb />claimed thousands of lives of<lb />men, women, and even children.<lb />While the epidemic is worldwide,<lb />most of the well-documented<lb />cases are in the United States. In<lb />this country, the urban areas are<lb />most affected. These cities in-<lb />clude: New York City, San Fran-<lb />cisco, Los Angelos, Houston,<lb />Newark, Washington, D.C.,<lb />Miami, Chicago, Dallas,<lb />Philadelphia, Atlanta, Boston,<lb />and others. The Black communi-<lb />ty has felt the most severe impact<lb />of the AIDS epidemic. Of the total<lb />persons with AIDS in the United<lb />States, 25% are Black, even<lb />though Black people represent<lb />only 12% of the total United<lb />States population. Of American<lb />women diagnosed with AIDS,<lb />60% are Black. Sixty percent<lb />(60%) of the babies born with<lb />AIDS are Black, and 53% of the<lb />children under 13 years of age<lb />with documented AIDS are<lb />Black. Nearly three-fourths of the<lb />children with AIDS are reported<lb />from New York, New Jersey,<lb />California, and Florida. No<lb />longer can AIDS be erroneously<lb />considered a ~gay-white-adult-<lb />male disease T, but a threat to the<lb />health of all Americans, especial-<lb />ly Black women and their<lb />children.<lb /><lb />BY: STAFF WRITER<lb />At a time when drugs are run-<lb />ning rampant in our community,<lb />diseases such as AIDS are<lb />reaching epidemic proportions<lb />and the role of the Black Church<lb /><lb />| is under fire. The Metropolitan<lb /><lb />African Methodist Episcopal Zion<lb />Church on West Fourth Street in<lb />Washington is not slowing down<lb /><lb />' and is taking on the nation Ts<lb /><lb />social ills head-on.<lb /><lb />Under the leadership of the<lb />Reverend David L. Moore,<lb />Metropolitan AME Zion Church<lb />has gone out into the African<lb />American communities of<lb />Beaufort County to tackle issues<lb />they believe to be detrimental to<lb />social, economic and political<lb />progress of Blacks in the rural<lb />eastern North Carolina counties.<lb /><lb /> oBeaufort County has never<lb />had a Black County Commis-<lb />sioner, a Black School Board<lb />Member, .. ., T among others,<lb /><lb />' Moore said. ~ ~Therefore, T T he add-<lb /><lb />ed, ~We (community leaders)<lb />have sued the county to revamp<lb />its election methods to allow<lb />Blacks to be elected and we are<lb />expecting a ruling from the U.S.<lb />Justice Department very soon. T<lb />He says of the law firm they hired<lb />ou of Charlottet, ~ ~They have the<lb />best record T T in winning law suits<lb />of this nature. In addition to<lb />Beaufort County Ts alledged<lb />political inadequacies, there are<lb />a number of economic and social<lb />ways that have netted the con-<lb />cerns of the Metropolitan Church<lb />family.<lb /><lb />Comprehensive<lb />land use plan to<lb />be discussed soon<lb /><lb />The Pitt County Planning<lb />Board Ts Comprehensive Plan<lb />subcommittee has scheduled a<lb />series of public meetings for the<lb />last week in April to present in-<lb />formation and solicit comments<lb />on draft goals and objectives for<lb />the ocunty Ts first Comprehensive<lb />Land Use Plan. The five member<lb />subcommittee has been working<lb />with the planning staff since<lb /><lb />(Continued on page 5)<lb /><lb />So we took off and ran all the<lb />way to the west end of town<lb />where we lived. I told my friend<lb />that I was going home and would<lb />see him the next day. I went<lb />home and went straight to bed,<lb />and by it being so early, my<lb />mother came to my room and<lb />asked me if I was sick, and I told<lb />her I was just tired.<lb /><lb />I iaid there and didn Tt get to<lb />sleep until early the next morn-<lb />ing. I was glad to see day break<lb />so I could get up and go some<lb />place where I wouldn Tt have to be<lb />bothered by that woman. I just<lb />couldn Tt seem to get the sight of<lb />her out of my mind. I got up the<lb />next morning, took a hot bath and<lb />dressed and didn Tt even tell my<lb />mother that I was gone. It was<lb />Saturday and I knew that I had<lb />two more days that I wouldn Tt<lb />have to go the drug store. I went<lb />to the corner where we usually<lb />hang out and some of my friends<lb />were already there. We stood<lb />around and talked a while and<lb />one of the boys suggested that we<lb />go to the baseball game that<lb />evening. So we all agreed to meet<lb />there that afternood and go<lb />together. The hours passed and<lb />we gathered on the corner and<lb />decided which way we would go.<lb />We knew that if we went Long<lb />Street the colored boys would run<lb />us and if we went through Nor-<lb />ristown the white boys would run<lb />us. The baseball park was located<lb />in southwest Greenville and we<lb />lived on the northwest part of<lb />town. So we decided to go through<lb />Norristown and take chances on<lb />the white boys being gone to<lb />swimming. But not so.<lb /><lb />Teenage pregnancy is one of<lb />those concerns. ~ ~They have<lb />already benefitted from the<lb /> ~Teen Parenting Program, <lb />Moore said. According to an<lb />outline of the Program, ~ ~It is<lb />designed to provide an opportuni-<lb />ty for teen parents and their sup-<lb />port systems to come together<lb />and begin the process of making<lb />the necessary decisions in a<lb />responsible and realistic manner<lb />... T The program further allows<lb />teens to receive help from other<lb />teens faced with similar pro-<lb />blems as well as participate ina<lb />structural and informal group<lb />discussion led by a trained social<lb />worker and as well as others<lb />within a speakers bureau.<lb /><lb />It would appear _ that<lb />Metroploitan has left no stones<lb />unturned when you visit the<lb />Church Ts campus. The entire<lb />church family, as it seems,<lb />reaches out to try and help every<lb />segment of the mostly rural coun-<lb />ty, and stemming from their<lb />commitments are interests from<lb />other members T of the<lb />community.<lb /><lb />Ms. Lynn Bolden, now working<lb />on her Master Ts Degree at Yale<lb />University, saw a oid within the<lb />county Ts public school system<lb />and set out to establish a tutorial<lb />program. The result of her con-<lb />cerns is now over a year old and<lb />is known as the Metropolitan<lb />Tutorial Program. Attendance<lb />has grown is excess of thirty now<lb />eager students, despite a severe<lb />lack of funding. The Program is<lb />scheduled each Monday, Wednes-<lb />day and Friday after school and<lb />the students T grades have im-<lb />porved immensley from C Ts and<lb />D Ts to A Ts and B Ts.<lb /><lb />In addition to these commit-<lb />ment, Metropolitan has made in<lb />the community. They also have a<lb />shelter for the homeless that Ts<lb />equipped with cots, blankets and<lb />pillows as well as a soup kitchen<lb />in a clean comfortable environ-<lb />ment. The Smith Reynolds Foun-<lb />dation has helped with funding,<lb />but more is needed according to<lb />Program officials.<lb /><lb />All these programs and other<lb />services are contiuing even as the<lb /><lb /> oWe've Come A Long Way <lb /><lb />BY: DEACON JAMES VINES<lb /><lb />THURSDAY, APRIL 20-WEDNESDAY, APRIL 26, 1989<lb /><lb />Just as soon as we had passed<lb />almost out of the area that we<lb />considered dangerous, we heard<lb />them coming shouting as loud as<lb />they could, ~Let Ts get them nig-<lb />gers. T T So we took off running as<lb />fast as we could until we were in<lb />our territory and when they say<lb />that we were they, they turned<lb />back. After the game we decided<lb />to go back another way. Instead<lb />of going back the way we came,<lb />we decided to go through Long<lb />Street. The closer we got to Long<lb />Street we could see some of the<lb />boys standing out on the corner<lb />waiting for us. They were break-<lb />ing up bricks and piling them<lb />beside the street until we got<lb />there. When we go within a few<lb />feet of them we heard one of them<lb />say, ~There goes those guys from<lb />the west end. Let Ts make them<lb />hook up, T T one of them said. As<lb />they begin to throw at us we took<lb />off running. But there was a bit<lb />of luck on our side because one of<lb />the boys running us was my<lb />cousin so they did what he asked<lb />them to do and they let us go. My<lb />cousin told me not to come over<lb />that way again because he may<lb />not be able to help me the next<lb />time. So we went on our way. We<lb />crossed Dickerson Ave. and on to<lb />Chestnut Street where we say a<lb />.arge crow of White fold gathered<lb />together on the sidewalk in front<lb />of a small white house sitting<lb />back from the street with some<lb />large oak tres in the front yard.<lb /><lb />We decided to investigate to see<lb />what was going on. When we got<lb />almost to the crowd we heard a<lb />white woman talking to one of the<lb />men telling him that she saw a<lb /><lb />nigger peeping in her window and<lb />he asked her which way did he go<lb />and she said he ran that way<lb />pointing toward the direction we<lb />were going. Then one of them<lb />asked her if she would know him<lb />if she saw him again and she said<lb />yes. By this time a tall man came<lb />by on the side of the street and<lb />she pointed toward him and said<lb />there he was over there. So they<lb />took after him and he decided to<lb />run not knowing what was<lb />happening.<lb /><lb />About five or ten jof them were<lb />behind him shouting, ~Let Ts kill<lb />that nigger. T T He probably could<lb />have outran them if he had the<lb />two bags of groceries down but he<lb />knew he was innocent and decid-<lb />ed to keep going as fast as he<lb />could. He had gotten almost to<lb />the northwest side of towm when<lb />one of the men flagged a car<lb />down that turned out to be a<lb />highway patrolman. The<lb />patrolman got out of the car and<lb />asked what was wrong and one of<lb />the white men told him they were<lb />chasing a nigger that had just<lb />peeped in a white woman Ts win-<lb />dow. The patrolman then asked<lb />the man which way did he go and<lb />he said he went straight up the<lb />street where they were standing.<lb /><lb />So he jumped in his car and<lb />took off down the street. After go-<lb />ing about three blocks the man<lb />that was riding with the<lb />patrolman spotted the man run-<lb />ning trying to get home and put<lb />his groceries down, but he was no<lb />match for the patrol car. He did<lb />make it close enough to his home<lb /><lb />Metropolitan A.M.E. It Ts time<lb />to let the general public review<lb />this information and_ provide<lb />comments on the direction being<lb />proposed,<lb /><lb />The recommended goals and<lb />objectives prepared by the Sub-<lb />committee have been organized<lb />into five topic areas. They include<lb /> ~Growth and Development, T T<lb /> ~Land Use, ~Transportation, T<lb /> ~Community Services and<lb />Facilities, T and ~Natural En-<lb />vironment. For each of these<lb />categories, a general goal and<lb />more specific objectives have<lb />been developed. Some of the ob-<lb />jectives address such items as<lb />management of growth and<lb />development, preservation of<lb />prime agricultural land, effective<lb />land use regulations, aesthetics,<lb />protection of natural resources,<lb />and provision of adequate public<lb />facilities and services, The public<lb />meetings are intended to allow<lb />citizens to express their opinions<lb />about the land use issues to be ad-<lb />dressed in the 20-year plan.<lb /><lb /> ~Active citizen participation is<lb />needed during this planning pro-<lb />cess, T said Ulma, ~and is critical<lb />at this stage. If the general public<lb />does not get involved now, then<lb />the plan will not reflect county-<lb />wide opinion, but only the opinion<lb />of the Planning Board and ~its<lb />staff. In addition, he continued,<lb /> ~short-term work on a future zon-<lb />ing ordinance, new development<lb />requirements, other planning<lb />tools, and more detailed land use<lb />plans will be developed as a<lb />direct result of this long-range<lb />plan. T<lb /><lb />Ed Hemingway, Chairman of<lb />the Comprehensive Plan Sub-<lb />committee, agrees. ~We have<lb />gone as far as possible on.our<lb />own. It was<lb />later learned that the man that<lb />was killed was in a local grocery<lb />store at the time that the incident<lb />occured, but it was too late. The<lb />woman who accused him made a<lb />death bed confession that she<lb />never saw anyone at her window,<lb />that she was just trying to keep<lb />her husband home. But that<lb />didn Tt help.<lb /><lb />After that Saturday afternoon,<lb />things were really scary because<lb />I was in a situation where the<lb />same thing could have happened<lb />to me. So time passed and it was<lb />Monday and time for me to go<lb />back to work at the drug store. I<lb />got to work about 8:00 in the mor-<lb />ning and after we had gone in the<lb />office and given our boss our<lb />sympathy, I was called in before<lb />we got to work. The dispatcher<lb />gave me the order which was on<lb />my route and told me it was<lb />already paid for and I didn Tt have<lb />to collect it. I arrived at the place<lb />of delivery and went on the porch<lb />and knocked on the door and a<lb />beautiful colored girl came to the<lb />door and invited me to come in.<lb />I told her that her husband had<lb />paid for it and there was nothing<lb />for her to pay but she insisted I<lb />come in anyway so she could ask<lb /> ~me if she had to turn in a tube to<lb />get toothpaste and I told her yes.<lb />Then she asked me if I could get<lb />her some tubes and she would<lb />pay me. I told her that I would<lb />try. SoI left and went back to the<lb />store thinking of how I could help<lb />this beautiful young lady. I<lb />thought about the one that I had<lb />at-home so I went home on my<lb />lunch break and got the one that<lb />I had and took it back to her on<lb />my way to the store. I gave her<lb />the tube and she thanked me and<lb /><lb />I started out the door and she...<lb />called me back and told me that.<lb />she. wanted to talk because she-<lb /><lb />gets lonesome homeall. day<lb />waiting for her husband to come<lb />home. In his letter<lb />of invitation the general chair-<lb />man of the African American<lb />Summit T89, former Gary, In-<lb />diana mayor Richard Hatcher "<lb />the first African American to be<lb />elected mayor of a major<lb />American city "explained that<lb /> ~an African American Agenda for<lb />the next four years and on out to<lb />the year 2000, which transcends<lb />party and partisan considera-<lb />tions, will be developed at this<lb />meeting. T The Summit, he con-<lb />tinued, ~will be open to all African<lb />Americans of every political per-<lb />suasion, religious organization;<lb />all economic levels, ages,<lb />philosophies and walks of life. T T<lb /><lb />4 address the issue of ~Options for<lb />_ the African American Communi-<lb />| ty, the panel on which I will be<lb /><lb />speaker. My participation<lb />guarantees that the 220,000<lb />Americans "mainly African<lb />Americans "who voted for me as<lb /><lb />- an independent Presidential can-<lb /><lb />didate last year, and the hun-<lb />dreds of thousands more who<lb /><lb />- support a Black-led, multi-racial<lb /><lb />independent party in America,<lb />will be represented in this next<lb />national dialogue on the Black<lb />Agenda, a dialogue that has been<lb /><lb />| taking place in our community<lb /><lb />for nearly a generation now.<lb /><lb />In 1972 the National Black<lb />Political Convention met in Gary,<lb />Indiana. In his explosive keynote<lb />address, Mayor Hatcher, the con-<lb />vention co-chair, handed down a<lb />passionate indictment of both the<lb />major parties.<lb /><lb /> ~No political party which ©<lb /><lb />represents the interests of<lb />America Ts giant corporations,<lb />rather than the urgent needs of<lb />the people, may enlist Black<lb />political power in its sup-<lb />port...Hereafter, every political<lb />party must make up its mind. It<lb />cannot represent both the cor-<lb />porations and the people. It can-<lb />not represent both the corpora-<lb />tions and the people. As the par-<lb />ty chooses, so shall we then<lb />choose the party.<lb /><lb /> ~We say to the two American<lb />political parties: This is their last<lb />clear chance; they have had too<lb />many already. These are not idle<lb />threats...The choice is<lb />theirs... Those of us still commit-<lb /><lb />then cross the Rubicon and form<lb />a third political movement. <lb /><lb />But despite those words, the<lb />convention ultimately rejected<lb />the option of building an indepen-<lb />dent party; instead the delegates<lb />opted for the strategy of increas-<lb />ing the number of Black elected<lb />officials, focusing their efforts on<lb />the Democratic Party.<lb /><lb />Jesse Jackson Ts run for the<lb />Presidency in 1984, and again in<lb />1988, renewed a passionate<lb />debate on whether and how our<lb />struggle for empowerment could<lb />be successful solely within the<lb />framework of the Democratic<lb />Party. The insistence on the part<lb />of the white pro-corporate hierar-<lb />chy of the Democratic Party that<lb />Jesse repudiate Minister Louis<lb />Farrakhan during the 1984 cam-<lb />paign heightened the feeling in<lb />our Communities that being in the<lb />Democratic Party meant allow-<lb />ing white America to dictate to us<lb />who our leaders could be. And<lb />1988, when Jackson was denied a<lb />place on the Democratic ticket<lb />even though he finished the<lb />primary season in a strong se-<lb />cond place, further underscored<lb />the extent to which the<lb />Democratic Party was intent<lb />upon denying us a share of<lb />political power commensurate<lb />with our numbers and our<lb />loyalty.<lb /><lb />The week of the Democratic<lb />National Convention, at which<lb />Jackson was unceremoniously<lb />dumped by Michael Dukakis in<lb />favor of the pro-Contra Texas<lb />land grabber, Lloyd Bentsen, was<lb />a flashpoint of national debate<lb />within the African American<lb /><lb />President Cheek issues open letter<lb /><lb />Editori4l Note: Reproduced is<lb />a text of a letter from Presient<lb />James E. This letter ap-. |<lb />peared origihally in the<lb />CAPSTONE, a publication of<lb />Howard University and is<lb />reprinted with permission.<lb /><lb />Dear Howardites:<lb /><lb />I am writing to keep you<lb />abreast of recent developments<lb />that have a bearing on the fu-<lb />ture and direction of Howard<lb />University.<lb /><lb />As you may know from recent<lb />news media reports, Howard<lb />students mounted protests over<lb />the following issues as they per-<lb />ceived them?<lb /><lb />¢ The election of Lee Atwater,<lb />Chairman of the Republican Na-<lb />tional Party, to the Howard<lb />University Board of Trustees;<lb /><lb />e The slow processing of ap-<lb /> ~plications for financial assis-<lb />tance;<lb /><lb />¢ Inadequate physical securi-<lb />ty on the campus and its en-<lb />virons:<lb /><lb />¢ The academic curriculum in-<lb />sofar as it appears to them to be<lb />too ~Eurocentered T;<lb /><lb />¢ The lack of an African<lb />American ~Graduate -- Studies.<lb /><lb />Program; and<lb /><lb />* Needed improvement of<lb />physical conditions in ~the<lb />dormitories.<lb /><lb />The sequence of events that<lb />comprised the protests of recent<lb />days started on the morning of<lb />Friday, March 3, when the)<lb />Charter Day convocation was T<lb />scheduled to be held with Bill<lb />Cosby delivering the main ad-<lb />dress. Student leaders and their<lb />followers occupied the stage<lb />and all but a few seats of Cram-<lb />ton Auditorium prior to the<lb />scheduled ceremony and pro-<lb />ceeded to hold a rally esposing<lb />their damands. |<lb /><lb />dents marched to the Ad-<lb />ministration Building and oc-<lb />cupied the premises, barring ex-<lb />ternal and internal doors. Sub-<lb />sequently, the University<lb />sought and obtained a tem-<lb />porary restraining order, direct-<lb />ing the students to vacate the<lb />building and to refrain from dis-<lb />rupting the normal operations<lb /> ~ of the University.<lb /><lb />When _students® refused to<lb />obey the mandate, local police<lb />were called in to enforce the<lb />court order on the morning of<lb />March 7. However, it soon be-<lb />came obvious that if the police<lb />used force sufficient to remove<lb />the students, the lives and saf-<lb />ety of the students would be<lb />endangered.<lb /><lb />In consultation with Dr.<lb />Jacob, I decided that the stu-<lb />dents could stay in the building<lb />as long as they wished. It was<lb />apparent however, that there<lb />would be several adverse conse-<lb />quences resulting from a pro-<lb />longed occupation of the Ad-<lb />ministration Building, some of<lb />which could include a delay in<lb />the University Tprocessing of its<lb />payroll and possible delays in<lb />graduation clearances, as well<lb />as in processing financial aid ap-<lb />plications.<lb /><lb />On Tuesday evening March 7,<lb />Mr. Atwater tendered his<lb />resignation to Dr. Jacob, which<lb />was accepted. x<lb /><lb />An agreement was signed<lb /><lb />with the students on March 9.<lb />which included a restatement of<lb />several of the _ issues<lb />enumerated on the previous<lb />Saturday.<lb /><lb />¢ Extension of the spring se-<lb />mester (1989) class withdrawal<lb />date:<lb /><lb />¢ A commitment to explore<lb />the possibility of giving aca-<lb />demic credit for community<lb />service; and<lb /><lb />¢ Assurance that students<lb /><lb />name for consideration to that<lb />committee. That name is voted<lb />upon by the full body by closed<lb />ballot.<lb /><lb />Contrary to several reports in<lb />the news media, I did not<lb />nominate Lee Atwater for elect-<lb />ion to the Board. His name was<lb />submitted by the committee to<lb />the Board, and the majority of<lb /><lb />_.its members voted for his ap-<lb /><lb />proval. The election of Mr. At-<lb />water came about as aresult of<lb />our zeal to expand the base of<lb />public and private contributions<lb />to our University. It was the<lb />Board Ts view, which I sup<lb />ported, the Mr. Atwater would<lb />provide a valuable entree to the<lb />world of business finance. I am<lb />of the opinion that history will<lb />vindicate our judgement by his<lb />future actions~- despite his<lb />resignation from the Board.<lb /><lb />A university is a place where<lb />divergent ideas and concerns<lb />can co-exist. The hallmark of<lb />Howard University has been its<lb />ability, not only to survive but<lb />also to thrive while embracing a<lb />community of scholars, intellec-<lb />tuals and students whose diver-<lb />sity of ideals, politics and goals<lb /><lb />may well be unmatched.<lb /><lb />anywhere else in higher educa-<lb />tion.<lb /><lb />It should be readily apparent<lb />that the concerns of the stu-<lb />dents, with but one exception,<lb />were shared by my administra-<lb />tion in general, and by me in<lb /><lb />My concerns for better hou-<lb />sing have been manifested in<lb /><lb />renovation of dormitory<lb /><lb />facilities. te<lb />Our rapid acceptance<lb /><lb />students demands is clear sub-<lb /><lb />Pe tk Se ee<lb /><lb />community. Minister Farrakhan<lb />held a forum on the Black Agen-<lb />da at the Wheat Street Baptist<lb />Church in Atlanta attended by<lb />4,000 people. He urged Jackson to<lb />be a ~champ and not a ~chump T<lb />by standing up to the racism of<lb />the Democrats.<lb /><lb />Minister Farrakhan invited me<lb />to address the crowd; they<lb />cheered when I said that Jesse<lb />was a brilliant leader but had led<lb />us to the wrong place. Minister<lb />Farrakhan gave his support to<lb />my independent candidacy,<lb />sparking a heated debate within<lb />the Muslim community over<lb />whether or not it should be involv-<lb />ed in-electoral politics and<lb />whether or not that involvement<lb />should include independent<lb />candidates.<lb /><lb />In answering the argument<lb />that the Democrats were better<lb /><lb /> ~for the Black community than the<lb /><lb />Republicans, Minister Far-<lb />rakhan said, ~You have no right<lb />to support something that you<lb />have given so much to and get so<lb />little from. You have no right to<lb />continue to support it, simply<lb />because you feel you suffered<lb />under Mr. Bush and maybe you<lb />might do better under Mr.<lb />Dukakis. Who said so? That Ts like<lb />voting for Lucifer or Satan, you<lb />catch hell either way you go. <lb /><lb />I look forward to presenting the<lb />independent option at the African<lb />American Summit T89. I look for-<lb />ward to intensifying the discus-<lb />sions within political, religious,<lb />civic and grassroots circles over<lb />which route we must take to our<lb />empowerment and the realiza-<lb />tion of the Black Agenda.<lb /><lb />Wife is tired<lb />of abuse and<lb />neglect__<lb /><lb />CARLTON<lb />BARRETT<lb /><lb />If relationships make you mad,<lb />sad or glad, write your Family<lb />Therapist; P.O. Not only is it<lb />unethical but as his wife I am<lb />not able to benefit from his<lb />health insurance as he cannot<lb />prove that I am his wife with<lb /><lb />that alias.<lb /><lb />In 1982-84 he began using co-<lb />caine, he had drastic mood sw-<lb />ings and personality changes.<lb />He became increasingly ver-<lb />bally abusive.<lb /><lb />Between 1984-88 he became<lb />physically abusive. He is now<lb />both physically and verbally<lb />abusive. I have gone to work<lb />with bruises on my neck and<lb />arms and have had to lie when<lb />people either ask or stare at my<lb />bruises out of embarrassment.<lb /><lb />In 1988 I moved out and<lb />stayed with my mother for a<lb />short period of time. I then<lb />started counseling, he reluc-<lb />tantly came. The sessions were<lb />once a week at $40 per session.<lb />We went for about two months<lb />and he did not pay for one of the<lb />sessions. I eventually stopped<lb />as this was a burden financialy<lb />and I did not think it was work-<lb />ing as he would be verbally<lb />abusive as soon as we leave the<lb /><lb />ists office<lb /><lb />eee ie a a<lb /><lb />A hi<lb /><lb />The next season will be my 20th<lb /><lb />year on national television. But<lb />not in all of that time have I<lb />presented anything of the gravi-<lb />ty of a 4-part series on AIDS that<lb />will be broadcast on public TV<lb />during the month of May.<lb /><lb />Unfortunately, this is not hype.<lb />If it were, you would be the same<lb />after you see these programs.<lb />You won Tt be.<lb /><lb />We start out with ~The First<lb />AIDS Whistle-Blower T T and the<lb />allegation that the AIDS virus is<lb />man-made. That charge is made<lb />by Dr. Robert Strecker, the first<lb />prominent medical expert to<lb />challenge the AIDS research<lb />Establishment.<lb /><lb />Next " ~What Causes AIDS? T<lb />Dr. Peter Duesberg, the world Ts<lb />top virologist says, contrary to<lb />what we Tre being told, that the<lb />AIDS virus does not cause AIDS.<lb />The third and fourth weeks will<lb />tackle the questions: ~Has the<lb />Medical Establishment Failed<lb />Us? and ~Is AIDS a Biological<lb />Experiment? "a summary of<lb />conspiracy theories, including a<lb />discussion on ethnic weapons<lb />aimed at Black people.<lb /><lb />One of the unique things about<lb />this series is that the discussions<lb />will not be limited to the official<lb />government point of view.<lb />Legitimate questions are raised,<lb />such as: Is AIDS a contagious<lb />form of cancer? Is it a biological<lb />warfare experiment gone bad?<lb />Have the laboratory scientists<lb />tried to play God and discovered<lb />the devil? If AIDS began in<lb />Africa, why did it spread first to<lb />America, rather than Europe<lb />where we have far closer links?<lb />And why are AIDS victims dying<lb />of sheep diseases and bird<lb />diseases and cattle diseases<lb />which we Td never heard of<lb />before.<lb /><lb />The questions alone are enough<lb />to make a half-way cynic raise an<lb />eyebrow, but increasingly they<lb />are being asked by members of<lb />the research-scientific-medical<lb />establishment itself "men (like<lb />Dr. Peter Duesberg, the world Ts<lb />leading retrovirologist, co-<lb />discover of oncogenes, professor<lb />of molecular biology at the<lb />University of California at<lb />Berkeley and a member of the<lb />prestigious National Academy of<lb />Sciences and Dr. Robert Strecker<lb />whose _ " videotape (Info:<lb />818/506-0508) has forced the AIDS<lb />issue to a public debate.<lb /><lb />This has resulted, believe it or<lb />not, in the first meaningful two-<lb />way dialogue within the medical-<lb />scientific community on the<lb />causes and dangers of this new<lb />and strange disease. And, believe<lb />it or not, this is the first time the<lb />official government AIDS resear-<lb />chers have ever debated Dr.<lb />Duesberg and his theory that the<lb />HIV virus does not cause AIDS.<lb />On the program, Dr. Duesberg<lb />offers to inject himself with the<lb />AIDS virus to prove his theory. If<lb />he Ts right, government research<lb />is going in the wrong direction.<lb /><lb />Even the American media has<lb />been in lockstep with the opinions<lb />of designated government<lb />sources "in one case to the detri-<lb />ment of the public Ts right to<lb /><lb />Dear Abused Wife:<lb /><lb />If your husband can respond<lb />to reason, if he is consistent<lb />enough to care about the ac-<lb />complishments of his family,<lb />then there is one fulfilling line of<lb />action you can take. If on the<lb />other hand your husband is<lb />damaged to the extent that he is<lb />not truthful to himself, if he<lb />does not value an honest reputa-<lb />tion and does not exhibit the re-<lb />sponsible attitude of caring for<lb />you and himself, then you may<lb />come to accept that an objective<lb />response demands another line<lb />of action.<lb /><lb />Stari by admitting to him<lb />that you are overwhelmed with<lb />the multiplicity of problems<lb />that you outlined to me.<lb />Describe the cause and effect of<lb />each problem you mentioned.<lb /><lb />If this detail dialogue does<lb />not improve the relationship<lb />significantly and soon enough<lb /><lb />know. For example, on May 11,<lb />1987, the London Times said in a<lb />front page headline: ~Smallpox<lb />Vaccine Triggered AIDS Virus. <lb /><lb />The story suggested that the<lb /><lb />World Health Organization Ts<lb /><lb />smallpox eradication vaccine<lb /><lb />program was responsible for<lb />unleashing AIDS in Africa.<lb />Almost 100 million Africans were<lb />inoculated "and_ possibly con-<lb />taminated. But all of the<lb />American news organizations ig-<lb />nored the reporting of, perhaps,<lb />the most important story of our<lb />time in one of the world Ts most<lb />credible news sources. You don Tt<lb />have to have a suspicious nature<lb />to ask why?<lb /><lb />It is also revealed on the series<lb />that 27 children in Russia were<lb />accidentally given AIDS with a<lb />contaminated needle. However,<lb />when the American media<lb />reported the stroy it was again<lb />guilty of the sin of omission. The<lb />fact that four mothers caught the<lb />AIDS virus from breast feeding<lb />their children was conspicuously<lb />left out of the U.S. press.<lb /><lb />Therefore, it has become in-<lb />creasingly more difficult to<lb />dismiss the Prof. Duesbergs, the<lb />Dr. Streckers and the Dr. John<lb />Seales of the Royal Society of<lb />Medicine in London and to hush<lb />up public debate "something<lb />many scientists feel unnecessary<lb />in the first place.<lb /><lb />It would be indeed unfortunate<lb />for all of us if we relegated all<lb />scientifuc dissent to the preserve<lb />of loonies and conspiracy theories<lb />hoping to air their paranoid delu-<lb />sions in public. Freedom of<lb />speech is a risk that comes with<lb />a democracy.<lb /><lb />Some conspiracy theories "<lb />such as Watergate won Tt go away<lb />because they describe facts.<lb />Moreover, the AIDS conspiracies<lb />are kept alive largely because of<lb />the history of certain government<lb />agencies.<lb /><lb />For example, for 40 years,<lb />from 1932 until 1972, the U.S.<lb />Public Health Service, and later<lb />the Centers for Disease Control in<lb />Atlanta, conducted the most<lb />atrociously unethical and racist<lb />experiment in our history. Black<lb />people with syphilis in Tuskegee,<lb />Alabama, were intentionally not<lb />treated to test the destructive<lb />path of advanced syphilis. Even<lb />when penicillin was discovered<lb />as a treatment it was withheld.<lb />During those years, this experi-<lb />ment was reported in 13 major<lb />medical journals, read by over<lb />100,000 doctors and discussed at<lb />conferences. It was an open<lb />secret.<lb /><lb />The purpose of our AIDS<lb />special is to dispel some of the<lb />growing fears and suspicions by<lb />creating an open and honest two-<lb />way dialogue "and not to<lb />automatically accept the pro-<lb />nouncements of official sources<lb />as articles of faith.<lb /><lb />When science cannot be ques-<lb />tioned, it is not science anymore,<lb />it is religion.<lb /><lb />Tony Brown Ts Journal TV<lb />Series can be seen on public<lb />television Sunday, Channel 25 at<lb />1:30 p.m.<lb /><lb />ask him to support you by see-<lb />ing a family therapist. A com-<lb />petent family therapist will seek<lb />to protect the family from all<lb />forms of abuse.<lb /><lb />If your husband does not al-<lb />low you that support of working<lb />through the difficulties with a<lb />competent therapist, then you<lb />are best advised to seek and fol-<lb />low-through this treatment. for<lb />yourself.
