Brother Melvin McLawhorn, along<lb />with his son and other family members pose for our camera outside<lb /><lb />Editor Ts Note: This is a conti-<lb />nuing series of true accounts.<lb /><lb />We are going to teach this nig-<lb />ger a lesson how to talk to white<lb />folks. They continued to beat him<lb />until he fell to his knees. His<lb />mother stood by pleading for<lb />them to stop and the more she<lb />begged the more they would beat<lb />him.<lb /><lb />Then she told them to please<lb />stop because he was a good boy<lb />and if they would stop she would<lb />make him go with them. The<lb />police then said he was a sassy<lb />nigger and they had to take him<lb />in so the chief could talk to him.<lb />It was a sad sight to watch a very<lb />young man getting beat and<lb />nothing you could do about it.<lb />There were about 25 or 30 people<lb />standing doing nothing but look-<lb />ing. In those days, if you said<lb />anything you could get shot and<lb />nothing would be done about it. So<lb />they picked him up from where<lb />they had handcuffed him around<lb />the utility pole and pushed him in<lb />the car. One of the neighbors<lb />brought him a large rag that had<lb /><lb />been torn from a sheet and gave<lb />it to him to wipe the blood from<lb />his face. After they got him to the<lb />car they came up to the crowd<lb />and made them disperse and go<lb />to their homes. The next day the<lb />chief of police made a statement<lb />that he was arrested for resisting<lb />arrest but he was soon to learn<lb />that his father was an employee<lb />of the city and was one of the<lb /><lb />hardest workers that worked for<lb />the city. So the chief dismissed<lb />the charges and they let him go<lb />because the chief said his father<lb />was a good nigger.<lb /><lb />After I got back to the drug<lb />store I sat down trying to get that<lb />horrible scene that I had just<lb />witnessed out of my mind. I had<lb />been there for about ten minutes<lb />when I got an order to go to<lb />another part of the city. I picked<lb />up the order and read the address<lb />on it that sent me to the other side<lb />of town and in almost the same<lb />kind of segregated section that I<lb />had just left. I arrived at the<lb />place where I was to deliver the<lb />package, got off my bike and<lb />went to the door and knocked. An<lb />elderly lady came to the door,<lb />almost out of breath and told me<lb />to come in and have a seat until<lb />she got the money. She came<lb />back into the room and sat down<lb />and said she was almost because<lb />she suffered from asthma, and<lb />the medicine that I brought was<lb /><lb />the fast-growing Carolina Grill. I pick-<lb />ed up the bike and started to<lb />leave when I heard someone call<lb />for me to come back for a few<lb />minutes.<lb /><lb />It was the lady next door who<lb />was the cook for the lady that was<lb />giving me trouble. I went across<lb />the yard to the next house where<lb />the lady was that called me. I<lb />went up on the porch and she told<lb />me to have a seat there in the liv-<lb />ing room while she did something<lb />in the kitchen.<lb /><lb />She came back in the living<lb />room and sat down and asked me<lb />how did I like my job, and I told<lb />her that I liked it fine. Then she<lb />said that I was a very nice boy<lb />and that I would be something<lb />one day. She asked me how old I<lb />was and I told her 17 and she said<lb /> ~You sure are young, I thought<lb />you were about 22 or 23. And I<lb />said no, I will be 18 September 20.<lb />Then she told me that she was 37<lb />and that made her 20 years older<lb />than me. But she said that<lb />wouldn Tt make any difference if<lb />two people loved each other.<lb /><lb />Then she got up from her chair<lb />and walked over to the place<lb />where I was sitting and sat down<lb />on the arm of the chair and put<lb />her arm around my shoulder and<lb />asked me if I liked her. She was<lb />a good looking woman, filled out<lb />in all the places. She didn Tt look<lb />a day over 25 and she knew it. But<lb />I didn Tt know what she was get-<lb />ting at until one day she came by<lb />the drug store and told me when<lb />I got off that she had something<lb />to ask me. I could hardly wait to<lb />get to her house that night. When<lb />the time came for us to get off I<lb />hurried to empty the trash cans<lb />and mop the floor. It was about<lb />5 minutes before quitting time so<lb />I locked all the doors and by this<lb />time it was time to go. I wasn Tt<lb />long getting there because I ran<lb />all the way. I was out of breath<lb />when I got there so I stood on the<lb />porch for a few minutes to catch<lb />my breath. After catching my<lb />breath I knocked on the door and<lb />she said ~Just a minute. <lb /><lb />After a minute or two she came<lb />and opened the door. I walked in<lb />and she told me to sit down<lb />because she knew I was tired<lb />from riding that bike all day.
