It was very hot and walk-<lb />ing in the sun was very<lb />uncomfortable.<lb /><lb />The next day we decided we<lb />would look again because it was<lb />just about time for school to<lb />open, and we wanted to earn<lb />some money so that we could<lb />buy things that we needed for<lb />school.<lb /><lb />I was not so lucky getting a<lb />job but my friend was. The job<lb />that he hadcalled for him to go<lb />to work at four oTclock in the<lb />afternoon and eight oTclock on<lb />Saturday. After he had been<lb />there for about a month he was<lb />on a ladder one day putting up<lb />stock when one of the clerks<lb />who was white and female<lb />came over to help him finish his<lb />job since there was no one in the<lb />store to wait on. While he was<lb />up on the ladder, the young lady<lb />came up on a second ladder<lb />next to the one my friend was<lb />on. While he was still working<lb />he didnTt notice that she was<lb />about four or five inches from<lb />him when he had to reach<lb />around her to put up some<lb />things that he was holding in his<lb />hands. What he didnTt see was<lb />a man peering through the win-<lb />dow from the outside. He was in<lb />a position that made it appear<lb />that my friend had put his arm<lb />around the gir! as if he was hug-<lb />ging her and that was a big<lb /><lb />A Long Way<lb /><lb />mistake. The man looking in the<lb />window ran down the street<lb />yelling as loud as he could to see<lb />a nigger hugging a white<lb />woman. In about five minutes<lb />the streets were full of white<lb />men mulling around whisper-<lb />ing, ~LetTs get that nigger.? By<lb />that time someone had called<lb />the police. After the police ar-<lb />rived they came in the store<lb />with their guns down shouting<lb />~Where is the nigger that hugg-<lb />ed the white woman?? and they<lb />all shouted at one time, ~There<lb />he is.TT So they pushed him to<lb />the door and put handcuffs on<lb />him and carried him off to jail.<lb /><lb />The next day the papers were<lb />full of the incident and it was<lb />not the way it happened. They<lb />took him down to the police sta-<lb />tion and booked him for attemp-<lb />ted rape and to be held without<lb />bond. On the tenth of the next<lb />month which was October,<lb />court was held. On Tuesday my<lb />friend was brought into court<lb />for trial handcuffed and<lb />shackled.<lb /><lb />The judge called my friendTs<lb />case the very first and in about<lb />thirty minutes the case was<lb />over because the girl testified<lb />that he never touched her and<lb />the jury found him not guilty. So<lb />the judge put him on probation<lb />for five years and he was never<lb />to go into that store again. Time<lb />went by and my friend was do-<lb />ing good but he should have<lb />never tried to stay in this town.<lb />One evening a car drove up to<lb />his house, a man got out and<lb />went to his front door and<lb />knocked. He met this man at<lb />the door and he began to talk.<lb />I couldnTt hear what they were<lb />saying but he soon left. The next<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />day my friend told me he had<lb />gotten another job working<lb />nights as a cook at the White<lb />Elk Club. He worked for the<lb />club several months and<lb />everybody thought everything<lb />was fine until one day he went<lb />to work and didnTt come home<lb />that night. Two days passed,<lb />then three days, then two<lb />weeks, and he still didnTt come<lb />home. His mother began to<lb />worry because he was not the<lb />kind of child to stay away from<lb />home. We began to go about the<lb />neighborhood asking about him.<lb />The next day there came a<lb />heavy rain and thunderstorm.<lb />After the storm had ceased, two<lb />men who were on their way<lb />home spotted what looked like<lb />a body floating near the bridge<lb />where they were walking. They<lb />stopped to see if they could<lb />make it out and it was exactly<lb />what they thought it was.<lb /><lb />They turned around and ran<lb />back toward the city and as<lb />they had gotten off the bridge<lb />they flagged a motorist down<lb />and asked him if he would call<lb />the police. So he brought them<lb />back to town and got the sheriff<lb />and a deputy who called the fire<lb />department. They came and<lb />fished him out of the river.<lb />After he was brought into view<lb />witnesses say that the body was<lb />bruised badly, his hands was<lb />wired behind his back, his<lb />mouth was full of rags, his feet<lb />were tied together and his face<lb />was badly beaten. The next<lb />morning the paper said he had<lb />committed suicide.<lb /><lb />(Continued on page 11)<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />NAACP<lb />HOSTS BANQUET<lb /><lb />The Pitt County Branch of the<lb />NAACP celebrated ~~Eman-<lb />cipation ProclomationT?T dur-<lb />ing its annual New Horizons<lb />Banquet held February 11th<lb />and 12th at the Roxy<lb /><lb />Showcase Theatre on<lb />Albemarle Avenue. Moreover, it is coming from the officials<lb />of a party that is largely perceived by blacks as<lb />bigoted. -<lb /><lb />President Bush understands. Jack Kemp, who<lb />identified himself and his subalterns as ~~the cut-<lb />ting edge? of the Republican PartyTs appeal to<lb />Americanized Africans, obviously recognizes that<lb />overt demonstrations to blacks must accompany<lb />the new rhetoric. .<lb /><lb />So, true to form, as many whites do when ap-<lb />proaching the Black Unknown, the GOP leader-<lb />ship is playing it safe. In this GOP equation, being<lb />black replaces the traditional values, so often<lb />referred to by President Bush.<lb /><lb />The Republican Party chairman, guitar-playing<lb />Lee Atwater, joined the GOP chorus when he<lb />courted the memory of Martin Luther King via the<lb />already over-solicited Coretta King in a speech on<lb />KingTs birthday. In todayTs environment no white |<lb />can tell blacks the truth. At least he made jy |<lb />through the day without being labeled a racist: |<lb /><lb />So if white Republicans are not going to (or can. |<lb />not) tell black people to help themselves, how are |<lb />they going to convert them to the party of |<lb />Fredrick Douglass and o~opportunityTT? .<lb /><lb />The obvious strategy is to meet with the | ~<lb />oestablished? black leaders and win the black |<lb />masses over with press releases and photo oppor. | |<lb />tunities showing important GOP officials with<lb />Jesse Jackson and Coretta King, among others,<lb /><lb />At best, itTs a superficial approach; at worst, itTs<lb />patronizing and racist. Racist because it assumes<lb />that all blacks want more welfare, more Dé.<lb />ocratic Party lies and are incapable of comprehen-<lb />ding and implementing their own liberation.<lb /><lb />This is what I believe Robert Woodson, a fierce.<lb />ly independent black man (not a conservative, as<lb />the white press identifies him), was trying to telj<lb />Jack Kemp when he turned down the number two<lb />job at HUD and the distinction of becoming one<lb />of the highest-ranking blacks in the administra.<lb />tion.<lb /><lb />Under WoodsonTs leadership the National Cen-<lb />ter for Neighborhood Enterprise has created,<lb />funded, and supervised the only innovative self.<lb />help projects in inner cities among underclass<lb />blacks. The blacks being courted by Messrs. Bush,<lb />Atwater, and Kemp have created solicitation pro-<lb />grams only.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />With This Coupon<lb /><lb />611 Albemarle Avenue<lb />Call 757-1930<lb /><lb />Walk-ins Welcomed<lb /><lb />Or Carol Cox<lb /><lb />""~"="~""""_e<lb /><lb />February is Black History Month<lb /><lb />Who were the ~~Buffalo Soldiers?TT<lb /><lb />The Buffalo Soldiers were black calvary units formed in 1866 on orders from General Grant. In short<lb />they remain in that childhood state that makes them<lb />vulnerable to reality. They go on and on fooling<lb />themselves.<lb /><lb />True, most of those type African Americans want<lb />recognition from their neighbors, but fooling oneTs<lb />self is no way to get it.<lb /><lb />If one is hungry, simply telling his neighbor that<lb />he has just dined on a gourmet meal does not relieve<lb />his hunger pangs.<lb /><lb />So it is with life itself. So it is with the struggle of<lb />the race to overcome. What we need is for African<lb />Americans to start paying the cost. Sure it is high,<lb />the cost that is, but by the same token it is well worth<lb />it.<lb /><lb />African Americans sorely need to be honest with<lb />themselves; they need to support African American<lb />causes, patronize African American businesses,<lb />donate to worthy civic causes, look before they leap,<lb />and most of all they need to keep the faith and know<lb />for certain that the race does not always go. (0 the<lb />swift, but to those who endureth to the end.<lb /><lb />Then, of course, they should always be mindful of<lb />their great heritage, and be willing to carry the torch<lb />for those yet unborn.<lb /><lb />With that approach in mind, we feel definitely<lb />sure that African Americans will obtain recognition<lb />and future generations will be ever grateful for the<lb />man-like stand that they took in the face of adversi-<lb /><lb />ty.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Leith O<lb /><lb />The candlelight wedding of Jewel<lb />Faye Taft of Greenville and William<lb />Arthur Knight of Alexandria, Va.,<lb />took place Saturday at 6 p.m.<lb /><lb />Bishop T.L. Philip Randolph.<lb /><lb />I suppose there are many people who do not<lb />know of Mr. Randolph, or of the extraordinary<lb />role he played in bringing blacks into the labor<lb />movement, removing barriers to black employ-<lb />ment and helping to guide the civil rights move-<lb />ment, including organizing the great March on<lb />Washington in 1963.<lb /><lb />During his long lifetime, Mr. Randolph went<lb />head-to-head with union bosses, employers, and<lb />even U.S. presidents. In 1941, he virtually forced<lb />President Roosevelt to issue an executive Order<lb />barring discrimination in defense jobs by threaten-<lb />ing a mass march on the nationTs capital.<lb /><lb />Black History Month also honors the many<lb />black scientists, legal experts, writers, statesmen<lb />and others who should be given greater recogni-<lb />tion for their accomplishments.<lb /><lb />Just to cite one contemporary example, General<lb />Colin Powell stepped in to head the National<lb />Security Council after that agency was severely<lb />damaged by the Iran-Contra scandal and the<lb />sleazy adventures of those who defied the law and<lb />their responsibilities.<lb /><lb />General Powell not only cleaned up the mess,<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />John E. Jacob<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />a<lb />Black History Month honors contemporary<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />pangs err ae<lb />as well as past<lb /><lb />but presided over foreign policy initiatives that<lb />have led to a safer world and the prospects of a<lb />new, healthier relationship with the Soviets that<lb />ends the Cold War.<lb /><lb />Now he will get his fourth star and take com-<lb />mand of all U.S.-based troops, with responsibility<lb />for defense of the continental United States, And<lb />heTs been widely talked of as the next U.S. Chief<lb />of Staff.<lb /><lb />Thus, General Powell exemplifies the point that<lb />the accomplishments of African Americans are<lb />broad and widespread. Black History Month<lb />should be a time for schools and other institutions<lb />to honor those accomplishments, whether in the<lb />activism of civil rights or whether in such.<lb />mainstream institutions as. the Army or th¢ Na-<lb />tional Security Counctt:<lb /><lb />Black History Month is also a time for African<lb />Americans to renew their commitment to their<lb />community institutions, such as the church, the<lb />black colleges, and the community-based social<lb />welfare and civil rights advocacy agencies that<lb />have spearheaded our progress.<lb /><lb />ThatTs why one of the most important events of<lb />1988 was the Bill Cosby familyTs gift of $20<lb />million to Spelman College. It reflected so many<lb />important things " the black commitment to<lb />philanthropy, the crucial nature of black institu-<lb />tions of higher learning to our past and our future,<lb />and the social responsibility of blacks who have<lb />made it.<lb /><lb />The panoply of black contributions to America<lb />and the extraordinary progress we have made<lb />despite tremendous odds is certainly reflected in<lb />the three men ITve mentioned in this column " a<lb />labor leader who organized the sleeping car<lb />porters into the first effective black union and<lb />blazed a trail of leadership in labor and in civil<lb />rights for half-a-century, a military leader and<lb />presidential foreign policy advisor, and an actor,<lb />producer, and philanthropist.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />BAIL BONDS<lb /><lb />Clinton Anderson<lb />203 Oakdale Road, Greenville<lb /><lb />Statewide Service 24 Hour Service<lb />Res.: 355-6340 Ans. Jesse<lb />has also spent time in jail for the<lb />same causes that Dr. King died<lb />for, civil rights.<lb /><lb />Not one to rest on his laurels,<lb />through his altruism and in-<lb />novative ideas, he is still working<lb />to bring about changes in this<lb />racist and unjust society.<lb /><lb />He is a firm believer in ~If<lb />something is not worth dying for,<lb />it is not worth living for.TT and he<lb />truly lives his life this way. She<lb />has contributed more to society<lb />than anyone I know. ITm talking<lb />about my mother, Ann Brown.<lb />SheTs a beautiful, caring, emo-<lb />tional, dedicated, and overall in-<lb />telligent woman. Over seven<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />years ago she had the incentive<lb />and wisdom to realize she wanted<lb />more out of life than what she<lb />had. So with consideration and<lb />prayer she entered a business not<lb />realizing what she would get out<lb />of it. Her life changed complete-<lb />ly after making that commit-<lb />ment. Her motto was and still is<lb />God first, Family second, and<lb />Business third. With her<lb />priorities set in this order she<lb />made it to the top in no time.<lb />SheTs won four cars and<lb />numerous other prizes.<lb /><lb />She helps other people by giv-<lb />ing them a decision. In 1988, many additional .<lb /><lb />responsibilities were directed at<lb /><lb />James. The new accounts and<lb /><lb />assignments did not slow him one<lb />it.<lb /><lb />In fact, James excelled in his<lb />individual performance.
