The<lb />state also had 55 legally organiz-<lb />ed events"mostly marches"by<lb />white supremacist groups.<lb /><lb />The 53 incidents were:<lb />5 deaths<lb /><lb />11 assaults<lb /><lb />4 cross burnings<lb /><lb />20 threats/harassment<lb />2 weapons charges<lb /><lb />8 vandalism<lb /><lb />3 other |<lb /><lb />The violence includes a murder<lb />in Halifax county (4/21), in which<lb />Aaron Parker, a black man, was<lb /><lb />T<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />and nursing administration on<lb />various committees.<lb /><lb />Originally from Spring Hope,<lb />N.C., Fisher received a bachelor<lb />of science in nursing from the<lb />University of North Carolina at<lb />Chapel Hill in 1975. She worked<lb />for three years as a staff nurse<lb />and head nurse in the surgical<lb />and medical units at the<lb />VeteransT Administration<lb />Medical Center in Durham.<lb /><lb />Fisher returned to UNC and<lb />earned a master of science<lb />degree in nursing- in 1980 with<lb />minors in health administration<lb />and education. She then worked<lb />as a family nurse practitioner at<lb />Central Family Practice, a<lb />medical practice affiliated with<lb />Durham CountyT General<lb />Hospital. She was later named<lb />staff development coordinator at<lb />the hospital and organized orien-<lb />tation and educational programs<lb />for nursing staff.<lb /><lb />Most recently, Fisher was<lb />director of nursing and quality<lb />assurance coordinator at Lincoln<lb />Community Health Center<lb />(LCHC), an ambulatory care<lb />facility in Durham. Under her<lb />direction, LCHC was the first<lb />federally funded ambulatory<lb />care facility in North Carolina to<lb />receive accreditation by the Joint<lb />Commission on Accreditation of<lb />Health Care Organizations.<lb /><lb />Fisher is a member of the<lb />North Carolina Nurses Associa-<lb />tion, National Black Nurses<lb />Association, American Public<lb />Health Association and the On-<lb />cology Nursing Society. Two<lb />of the boys sustained minor in-<lb />juries in the chase.<lb /><lb />During September, vandals<lb />broke a stain-glass window at the<lb />synagogue in Rocky Mount,<lb />followed by disruptions during a<lb />service.<lb /><lb />And in December, a white man :<lb /><lb />driving on I-40 rammed a car car-<lb />rying four black high school<lb />students, forcing the car to spin<lb />out of control and flip over. I could<lb />also hear the sound of some<lb />locusts and crickets that kept the<lb />evening from being dull and bor-<lb />ing. I could also hear the sound of<lb />the freight train blowing as it ap-<lb />proached the crossing as it<lb />entered the southwest section of<lb />the city limits.<lb /><lb />The noise of the train kept me<lb />from hearing my mother calling<lb />for me to come in and wash up<lb />and get ready for the last meal of<lb />the day. As I got up to go into the<lb />house I heard the paper boy com-<lb />ing down a very dusty unpaved<lb />street. I turned to go into the<lb />house when the newspaper fell<lb />behind me that the newsboy had<lb />thrown as he went by. I reached<lb />down to pick up the paper that<lb />was almost covered with<lb />headlines.<lb /><lb />I unfolded the paper to get a<lb />better look to see in very large<lb />print that read ~Germans and<lb />Poles War Begins. This was<lb />September, 1939 and just about<lb />all you could hear was the ques-<lb />tion, ~Is the U.S. going to war?<lb /><lb />Everyone was talking about go-<lb />ing to war. One day a friend and<lb />I decided to go looking for work.<lb />We had gone about 5 or 6 blocks<lb />when we heard a voice behind us<lb />yelling, ~Hey boy, come here!T<lb /><lb />So we stopped to see what she<lb />wanted, knowing that we were<lb />doing something very dangerous<lb />by standing in the street talking<lb />to two women and what made it<lb />dangerous was that they were<lb />white. One of them yelled out the<lb />window of the car to ask us how<lb />they could get to the downtown<lb />section of the city. As I directed<lb />her in the direction downtown, I<lb />didnTt notice that two men had<lb />driven up behind me. I turned to<lb />look and see who it was when I<lb />felt a fist besides my head. This involves commu-<lb />nity education, home inspections,<lb />and the installation and maintenance<lb />of smoke detectors in low-income<lb />housing. The goal is to eliminate as<lb />many factors as possible which<lb />could lead to a fire and loss of life."<lb /><lb />Branch cites three primary<lb />causes of house fires in the city's<lb />black community and low-income<lb />neighborhoods: cooking, faulty<lb />electrical wiring, and portable space<lb />heaters, including wood stoves.<lb /><lb />"We have a lot of cooking fires,"<lb />says Branch. "In fact, overall, we<lb />have more kitchen fires than any-<lb /><lb />thing else, and a lot of cases where<lb />grease has been left on the stove."<lb /><lb />The fire prevention officer<lb />points to six, time-proven responses<lb />to stop potential kitchen fires dead<lb />in their tracks.<lb /><lb />¢ Pay attention to your cooking<lb />and don't overheat grease. Grease<lb />overflows and can start a fire in sec-<lb />onds. If you must leave the stove to<lb />answer the phone or the doorbell,<lb />turn down the heat. If you think you<lb />may be gone for more than a few<lb />minutes, turn the stove off.<lb /><lb />+ Make children aware of cook-<lb />ing hazards when they help you in<lb />the kitchen and always tum skillet<lb />and pot handles toward the center of<lb />the stove to prevent accidental over-<lb />turning.<lb /><lb />*Keep towels and napkins away<lb />from the stove and don't wear frilly<lb />clothing -- especially those with<lb />loose, floppy sleeves -- while cook-<lb />ing.<lb /><lb />« Always keep the pot lid close at<lb />hand to smother a small grease fire.<lb /><lb />¢ Don't try to move or Carry a pan<lb />which contains a grease fire. Moving<lb />the pan may seem tempting when<lb />you discover a fire, but it often leads<lb />to burns for the carrier and additional<lb />fire damage.<lb /><lb />« You may be able to stop a small<lb />grease fire with a handful of baking<lb />soda -- but don't use baking powder,<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />ItTs Time Again!<lb />Income Tax<lb />Services \<lb /><lb />&amp; Personal<lb /><lb />Computer Training<lb /><lb />Call today |<lb />..eand find out how you can<lb />get 2-hours FREE PC Training.<lb /><lb />McCloud &amp; Associates<lb />| 10:00a.m. - 7:00 p.m.<lb /><lb />752-0120<lb /><lb />CEN<lb />=<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />In honor<lb /><lb />of<lb /><lb />Community<lb /><lb />which contains flour or starch and<lb />could spread the flames. Never use<lb />water on a grease fire be-cause it<lb />doesn't work and can make a fire less<lb />manageable.<lb /><lb />If the situation should get out of<lb />hand a big fire develops, Captain<lb />Branch advises not to try to fight it.<lb />Leave the house and phone the 911<lb />emergency number for help.<lb /><lb />Because many low-income<lb />blacks live in older housing, they are<lb />more likely to suffer from fires<lb />caused by faulty or worn-out elec-<lb />trical wiring. People also create their<lb />own electrical dangers by improp-<lb />erly replacing blown fuses. Too of-<lb />ten, says Branch, people drop a<lb />penny in the fuse box with-out real-<lb />izing the potential danger created by<lb />overheated wiring. Blown fuses<lb />should always be replaced with the<lb />proper parts.<lb /><lb />Another wiring danger, he says,<lb />can be caused by hiding electrical<lb />extension cords under rugs or be-<lb />hind curtains. These cords some-<lb />times fray and set cloth articles<lb />aflame.<lb /><lb />Low-income residents also run a<lb />risk when they plug too many ap-<lb />pliances into a single outlet. This all-<lb />too-common practice can also over-<lb />heat indoor wiring and lead to fire.<lb /><lb />"The Fire/Rescue Department is<lb /><lb />more than willing to go out to<lb />someone's house and make a free fire<lb />safety inspection whenever we're<lb />asked," Branch says. "We'll inspect<lb />the property and provide them witha<lb />checklist of possible hazards. Whata<lb />lot of people don't understand,<lb />though, is that once we do that, we're<lb />not responsible for re-porting it to<lb />anyone else. If some-one has a prob-<lb />lem his landlord out to fix, it's up to<lb />the tenant to report it."<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Tenants can report building code<lb />violations, including faulty wiring,<lb />to the city Development<lb />Department's Inspection Division at<lb />830-4467.<lb /><lb />The department is also actively<lb />promoting its Code Red Smoke<lb />Detection Program, which is funded<lb />totally by donations from the local<lb />business community. Begun almost<lb />two years ago, the program provides<lb />eligible Greenville residents with<lb />free installation and yearly mainte-<lb />nance of smoke detectors.<lb /><lb />Installing a smoke detector is the<lb />single mosteffective step that can be<lb />taken to prevent residential fires,<lb />according to Greenville Fire/Rescue<lb />Chief Jenness Allen.<lb /><lb />"A smoke detector is one of the<lb />best tools we have to save someone's<lb />life," Allen says. "According to the<lb />latest survey I've seen, from back in<lb />1979, smoke detectors had reduced<lb />loss of life by 50 percent. I'm sure it's<lb />a lot more than that now because<lb />there are a lot more detectors in use."<lb /><lb />Greenville residents are eligible<lb />for the program if their total family<lb />income is $360 per month or less, or<lb />if they receive food stamps or gold<lb />Social Security checks. Once smoke<lb />detectors are installed, Fire/-Rescue<lb />workers will come back once a year<lb />to change their batteries.<lb /><lb />"At least once a year we know<lb />we've checked it and the battery is<lb />good, Allen says. "We've found a<lb />lot of elderly people are especially<lb />glad to have it in their homes."<lb /><lb />"One reason smoke detectors are<lb />so valuable is that loss of life in<lb /><lb />homes is most likely between 12<lb />o'clock at night and six o'clock in<lb />the morning, Branch adds, "when<lb />people are asleep.<lb /><lb />The heaviest season for fires is<lb />between December and the first of<lb />March, usually the coldest months of<lb />the year. "We're seeing a real in-<lb />crease in chimney fires and in fire<lb />places, the fire prevention officer<lb />notes, oespecially from improperly<lb />installed fireplaces."<lb /><lb />Electric, kerosene, gas and woo-<lb />dburning heaters pose numer-ous<lb />threats residents should be a-ware<lb />of. If you use a an electric heater,<lb />Branch says make sure it has a tip-<lb />over shut-off switch anda protective<lb />grill around the heating coils. Don't<lb />use it in a bathroom or near a sink<lb />where electrocution could occur<lb />and, if you must use it with an<lb />extension cord, make sure it is for<lb />heavy-duty use.<lb /><lb />Kerosene heaters pose another<lb />set of problems. Branch says never<lb />use the more volatile gasoline or<lb />propane in a kerosene heater -- just<lb />kerosene. Then, before refueling it,<lb />turn off the heater, let it cool and take<lb />it Outdoors.<lb /><lb />When lighting the pilot of a gas<lb />heater, Branch says to light the<lb />match first, then turn on the gas -- not<lb />the reverse.<lb /><lb />Woodburning heaters should<lb />never be primed with gasoline or any<lb />other petroleum fuel, Branch says,<lb />and owners should always let ashes<lb />cool before throwing them out.<lb />People using fireplaces should al-<lb />ways use a firescreen around it and<lb />have their chimneys regularly<lb />cleaned of creosote, which can col-<lb />lect in chimneys and ignite.<lb /><lb />Most important, according to<lb />Captain Branch, is to be prepared if<lb /><lb />a fire should break out.<lb />"Good planning can save lives,<lb /><lb />there's no doubt about it, he says.<lb />"Every family should have a fire es-<lb />cape plan, know alternate means of<lb />escape, and have someone responsi-<lb />ble to help children and elderly rela-<lb /><lb />tives get outside. Then, there ¥<lb />be a prearranged place where ev<lb /><lb />one knows to meet. And ev-erfone<lb />should understand that no one<lb />should re-enter | the buming builting<lb />for any reason."<lb /><lb />For your own free fire safety in-<lb />spection, advice, or more infor-ma-<lb />tion about the Code Red smoke de-<lb />tector program, contact the Green-<lb />ville Fire/Rescue Department at<lb />830-4396.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />A moment in Greenville's<lb />African American HIStBky<lb /><lb />Greenville Utilities is owned by<lb />the citizens of Greenville, but is<lb />operated by an independent<lb />7-member Board of Commifs-<lb />sioners which approves rates,<lb />development plans, budgets and<lb />sets policy that is carried out by<lb />our General Manager. The word ~conversa-<lb />tionT means ~behaviorT in the<lb />Greek, and is clearly saying that<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />(Photo by Jim Rouse)<lb /><lb />THE ~MT VOICE-THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 9-WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 1989-7<lb /><lb />The Devil canTt ride your<lb />back if youTre not bent over<lb /><lb />them grow up from day one,<lb />through all kinds of behaviors<lb />and attitudes. They remember your<lb />tantrums, your hate-filled words,<lb />your gossip, your drinking, your<lb />critical spirit, your immorality"<lb />and now you tell them what is<lb />Truth! To these folks, your words<lb />are not that important. What they<lb />want to see is ACTION, a new<lb />LIFESTYLE. (Now as the ~door<lb />opens, by all means share Jesus<lb />with them. But do so only as the<lb />Holy Spirit directs.) Remember,<lb />the only revelation an unsaved<lb />person can receive is that Jesus<lb />is Lord.<lb /><lb />Whose adorning let it not be that<lb />outward adorning of plaiting the<lb />hair, and of wearing of gold, or of<lb />putting on of apparel; but let it be<lb />the hidden man of the heart, in that<lb />which is not corruptible, even the<lb />ornament of a meek and quiet<lb />spirit, which is in the sight of God<lb />of great price (vss. 3,4). This is a<lb />very important principle to<lb />know"holiness is not from the<lb />outside in, but from the inside<lb />out. To accomplish that, one<lb />needs a meek (teachable) and<lb />quiet (not disturbed by cir-<lb />cumstances) spirit.           <lb />HERE'S TO YOU,<lb />AMERICA.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />many of the old, pre-salvation<lb />traits remain to see if you are liv-<lb />ing what you are talking. An ar-<lb />rogant, rebellious, dominating<lb />spirit won't win them; only a<lb />meek and quiet one will. Do you<lb />recall my opening words concer-<lb />ning respect for others? You're<lb />going to have to develop a respect<lb />for them even though they have<lb />yet to be saved. DonTt be arrogant<lb />that you're saved and they arenTt.<lb />Stand in the gap for them through<lb />intercession. God is not only a<lb />God of individuals, but a God of<lb />families. The Heavenly efforts to<lb />save your family have increased<lb />because of you, because of your<lb />accepting Jesus. As a represen-<lb />tative of Heaven for your family,<lb />you are going to have to start ac-<lb />ting like a ~Heavenly person.<lb /><lb />For after this manner in the old<lb />time the holy women also, who<lb />trusted in God, adorned<lb />themselves, being in subjection un-<lb />to their own husbands (vs. 5). You<lb />are going to have to trust God<lb />that your family will come into<lb />the Kingdom. Begin to exercise<lb />the ~faithT scriptures for them,<lb />knowing that in yourself you<lb />canTt draw them in. The Holy<lb />Ghost does that! How do you<lb />adorn yourself? Through humili-<lb /><lb />ty, through ~ministeringT to the<lb />other persons through kind and<lb />thoughtful deeds. The Holy Spirit<lb />knows exactly the best way to<lb />minister to that individual (or in-<lb />dividuals). Let Him tell you how.<lb /><lb />Even as Sara obeyed Abraham,<lb />calling him lord; whose daughters<lb />ye are, as long as ye do well, and are<lb />not afraid with any amazement (vs.<lb />6). What in the world is this say-<lb />ing! Simply, just as Sara<lb />respected her husband and put<lb />her faith in the words of<lb />Abraham, you must put. your<lb />faith in GodTs promises and stand<lb />in faith for othersT salvation.<lb />Then donTt act surprised when it<lb />happens! Faith already ~seesTT<lb />them in Heaven.<lb /><lb />Likewise, ye husbands, dwell<lb />with them according to knowledge,<lb />giving honour unto the wife, as un-<lb />to the weaker vessel and as being<lb />heirs together of the grace of life;<lb />that your prayers be not hindered<lb />(vs. 7). The knowledge spoken of<lb />here is ~generalT knowledge, not<lb />revelation knowledge. Husbands,<lb />get to know your wives, learn<lb />what makes a woman a woman,<lb />and treat her as ~fine crystalT<lb />with great value. What I'd.<lb />like to share with you is that net<lb />only will there be a great revival,<lb />in GodTs earthly Kingdom, the<lb />Enemy will also be having his,<lb />revival. There'll be so much tur-<lb />moil, destruction, and confusion<lb />that families will have to be able.<lb />to go to each other for encourage-<lb />ment. Satan would desire to pre-<lb />vent that unity, and thatTs why:<lb />the Satanic pressure against all<lb />families today. GodTs plan,<lb />however, is that families serve<lb />God together. If you still have un-<lb />saved family members, donTt be<lb />content.<lb />The Vision<lb /><lb />In September of 1981, I had an<lb />awesome vision from God. It was<lb />of entire cities, every city in the<lb />world, their streets filled with<lb />people whose hands were lifted in<lb />praise and worship to God. The:<lb />crowds were too large for any<lb />building to hold them all. And,J;<lb />knew, I just knew, that people<lb />were grouped in families. All;<lb />races, all colors, all creeds were<lb />together, having put aside doc-<lb />trines and dress codes in order to<lb />simply worship God. And they all<lb />had one thing in common"their,<lb />families were saved and they;<lb />were beckoning for Jesus to,<lb />come,<lb /><lb />I share this next related<lb />thought with you with all humili-;<lb />ty, but with Godly inspiration, I,<lb />know that I know that I know that;<lb />revival is not going to happen un+;<lb />til the church has dealt with,<lb />segregations. Nobody wants to<lb />talk about it but I must touch on)<lb />the subject. Turn to Joha,<lb />17:22,23: And the glory which thou,<lb />gavest me I have given them; that,<lb />they may be one, even as we are,<lb />one: I in them, and thou in me, that.<lb />they may be made perfect in one;<lb />and that the world may know that,<lb />thou hast sent me, and hast loved:<lb />them, as thou hast loved me. Until<lb />the issue of race is resolved, the:<lb />manifestation of God cannet<lb />come. I know this is a sensitive,<lb />topic, but we cannot close ovr<lb />eyes to it. 1 John 4:20,21 perfect-;<lb />ly sums it up as John speaks tai<lb />Christians about Christians: If a:<lb />man say, I love God, and hateth his,<lb />brother, he is a liar; for he that;<lb />loveth not his brother whom he hath)<lb />seen, how can he love God whom he}<lb /><lb />(Continued on page 11)<lb /><lb />The Employees Of<lb />Burroughs Wellcome Company _ }<lb />Join In Commemoration Of |<lb /><lb />African-American Black History Month 1<lb />A Time To Reflect The Many<lb /><lb />Contributions And Achievements<lb /><lb />Of Black Americans<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /></p>

          <lb />thy grace, those whose portion is<lb />not wrath and who go not astray.<lb />Holy Quran 1:1-7<lb /><lb />oIn this world there are many<lb />paths. But since our God is one<lb />there is only one path that leads<lb />to him. Finding the straight path<lb />is not hard, staying on the<lb />straight path is difficult. Why?<lb />Allah teaches us in the Quran that<lb />Satan is an avowed enemy to<lb />mankind. He has sworn to re-<lb />main an obstacle to our salvation<lb />until we are raised up on the day<lb />of judgement. Biblical history<lb />shows whenever Allah gave<lb />guidance to a people, Satan would<lb />cause them to forget it. Father<lb />Abraham and his people were not<lb />so far removed from Noah and<lb />the flood that they should have<lb />forgotten the wrath of their Lord<lb />upon the wrongdoers of His crea-<lb />tion. But they did forget, except<lb />for Father Abraham and a few of<lb />the elect.<lb /><lb />Today is not different from<lb />yesterday? Father AbrahamTs<lb />people could not bring<lb />themselves to believe in the<lb />supremacy of God. They refused<lb />to believe that one God has power<lb />over all things. So they divided<lb />His power among several gods.<lb />The deeper they went into their<lb />false worship the harder it<lb />became for them to distinguish<lb />truth from falsehood. Satan made<lb />their false worship fair seeming<lb />to them and caused them to doubt<lb />GodTs eternal love and mercy and<lb />His power to forgive all sins. the<lb />Quran says: O Ye who believe! If<lb />ye fear Allah, he will grant you a<lb />criterion (to judge between right<lb />and wrong), remove from you (all)<lb />evil (that may afflict) you, and<lb />forgive you; for Allah is the Lord of<lb />grace unbounded. Holy Quran<lb />8:29.<lb /><lb />~God alone knows the right way<lb />that leads to Him. He has never<lb />left us alone to find the path<lb />without His guidance. Scientists<lb />are today verifying that the<lb />knowledge of God has always<lb />been with us. From the beginn-<lb />ing, God made Himself known to<lb />us through His prophets and His<lb />books. Those who sincerely seek<lb />God recognize His guidance and<lb />follow it. Those who follow<lb />falsehood can never be guided<lb />aright, nor can they guide to the<lb />right. These are they who buy er-<lb />ror for guidance, so their bargain<lb /><lb />ings no gain, nor are they guid-<lb /><lb />- Holy Quran 2:16<lb /><lb />oWhen our African ancestors<lb />heard the call to Islam they sub-<lb />mitted. Many of our slave<lb />fdreparents were Muslims. It was<lb />the slavemaster who forced his<lb />réligion upon us. Though we<lb />gtudgingly accepted it and<lb />modified it to suit our needs, it is<lb />still the slavemasterTs religion. If<lb />it'was the truth that was forced<lb />upon us there would be no argu-<lb />ment here. However, when you<lb />study Christian history you find<lb />that millions of Christians were<lb />persecuted because they believ-<lb />ed in one God and refused to wor-<lb />ship God in a Trinity. They were<lb />persecuted because they said<lb />Jesus was only a prophet and not<lb />the son of God nor was he God.<lb />They were persecuted by pagans<lb />who wanted to mix falsehood with<lb />truth.<lb /><lb />~The African people have a du-<lb />ty to question the validity of any<lb />réligion. We have been enslaved<lb />and colonized to such an extent<lb />that the knowledge of our origin<lb />has been nearly destroyed. Our<lb />foreparents walked the path of<lb />God but Satan through extreme<lb />trials and tribulations has caus-<lb />ed us to forget it. We have been<lb />made to become like the people<lb />of Hosea"a people destroyed for<lb />lack of knowledge.<lb /><lb />~Challenge #1" Is J esus God? _<lb /><lb />continues<lb /><lb />You may send any inquiries or<lb />questions to ~Islam in FocusT c/o<lb />ne ~M~ VoiceT newspaper.
