Not likely,TT Post editor Jalyne Strong<lb />wrote in her column.<lb /><lb />I know the feeling. ITve been promoting Buy<lb />Freedom, an economic self-help campaign to keep<lb />50 percent of our $230 billion in black hands, for<lb />the last three years. With few exceptions, blacks in<lb />leadership positions have been indifferent and<lb />polite, but have avoided being of any substantial<lb />help.<lb /><lb />And, as Barnett points out, they are the very<lb />ones who say we should help one another, But<lb />please donTt think this is a case of sour grapes. |<lb />never expected them to live up to their rhetoric,<lb />therefore I. do not share BarnettTs frustration or<lb /><lb />ITve learned to be more selective. Some blacks<lb />are simply insincere. But those with a commitment<lb />are real jewels. Which leads me to a young lawyer<lb />in Wilmington, North Carolina, named Peter<lb />Grear.<lb /><lb />When we started Buy Freedom three years ago,<lb />Peter Grear came to my attention because he was<lb />spending his own money to buy advertising in The<lb />Wilmington Journal to solicit help for the cam-<lb />paign. And, through the<lb />considerable influence of Grear and his member-<lb />ship, both the North Carolina Democratic Party<lb />and the Republican Party have endorsed the Buy<lb />Freedom philosophy of circulating more money in<lb />black hands.<lb /><lb />When we produced our first Buy Freedom mo-<lb />tion picture (~~The White GirlTT), it was Peter<lb />Grear who made it possible for hundreds of North<lb />Carolinians to get jobs as extras and others to<lb />secure Speaking parts and technical jobs.<lb /><lb />In Wilmington, Grear and the Buy Fredom<lb />businesses have created a Buy Freedom Scholar-<lb />ship Fund to assist underprivileged students.<lb /><lb />| donTt want this to sound like a eulogy, but |<lb />hope we don't throw out the baby with the bath<lb />water. While many (too many) black organiza-<lb />tions and leaders are rhetorical gymnasts, Peter<lb />Grear and the North, Carolina Black Leadership<lb />Caucus (leaders who do not necessarily hold of-<lb />fice) are not.<lb /><lb />So far, the Pete Grears, the AKA's, the Deltas,<lb />the 100 Black Men of Atlanta, Meharry Medical<lb />College, the Business and Professional WomenTs<lb />Clubs, Norfolk Community Hospital, the Black<lb />MBA's, etc. " and many other grassroots groups<lb />" have raised over $600,000 utilizing our first Buy<lb />Freedom motion picture.<lb /><lb />In my opinion the leaders are only as good as<lb />the followers. <lb />MRS. MAYE<lb />CHRISTMAS POTPOURRI<lb /><lb />1. Christmas is a Christian<lb />Holiday that celebrates the birth<lb />of Jesus Christ.<lb /><lb />2. The story of Christmas<lb />comes chiefly from the Gospels of<lb />Saint Luke and Saint Matthew in<lb />the New Testament. According to<lb />Luke, an angel appeared to<lb />shepherds outside the town of<lb />Bethlehem and told them of<lb />JesusT birth. Matthew tells how<lb />the wise man, called Magi,<lb />followed a bright start that led<lb />them to Jesus.<lb /><lb />3. The word Xmas _ is<lb />sometimes used instead of<lb />Christmas. This tradition began<lb />in the early Christian Church. In<lb />Greek, X is the first letter of<lb />ChristTs name. It was prequent-<lb />ly used as a holy symbol.<lb /><lb />4. Eggnog is a popular<lb />Christmas beverage in many<lb />homes.<lb /><lb />5. Christmas carolers provide<lb />holiday entertainment in many<lb />public places.<lb /><lb />6. During the Christmas<lb />season, many churches display a<lb />~CrecheT (nativity scene). It<lb />shows figures of Mary and<lb />Joseph praying over the infant<lb />Jesus in the stable. Figures of the<lb />Magi, Angels, Shepherds, and<lb />various animals surround the ho-<lb />ly family.<lb /><lb />7. A visit with Santa is a<lb />Christmas treat for children<lb />throughout the world. In many<lb />department stores, youngsters<lb />wait in line to tell Santa what<lb />presents they would like for<lb />Christmas.<lb /><lb />8. It<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />That doesnTt mean we canTt do anything about<lb />our self-esteem. But it doesnTt come from our<lb />heads " it comes from our activity " what we do.<lb />What I am saying is that how much esteem, how<lb />much respect we have for ourselves, is connected<lb />to how we relate to the world. Self-esteem comes<lb />from our willingness to speak out, to stand up for<lb />what is right and what is righteous. |<lb /><lb />I became a political activist because I realized<lb />that in order to help our people I had to change<lb />not their minds " how they think and feel " but<lb />the conditions which create black peopleTs<lb />degredation, their humiliation and self-hatred.<lb />And I became a builder of the independent<lb />political movement because I believe that a fun-<lb />damental impediment to our self-esteem and our<lb />empowerment is our dependence on a political<lb />party " the Democratic Party " that has taken us<lb />for granted for fifty years while giving us nothing<lb />in return.<lb /><lb />We saw that disrespect in action during the<lb />presidential election this year. And next year "<lb />with important municipal races coming up in<lb /><lb />Chicago, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Jackson (Miss.),..<lb />and New York City " we will get another look at<lb /><lb />how much ~o~esteemTT the Democratic Party has for<lb /><lb />the African-American people. New York City is a<lb /><lb />case in point.<lb />Two days after New York CityTs African-<lb /><lb />American electorate gave the Democrats one of:<lb />T their few election day victories, Mayor Ed Koch "<lb /><lb />the leader of the Democratic Party in New York<lb /><lb />City " once again showed his true colors: he toldT<lb /><lb />Reverend Jesse Jackson to keep out of the 1989<lb /><lb />mayoral race here. Koch wants us to know that he °<lb /><lb />doesnTt have to give the black community or our<lb /><lb />leaders any respect; his message to us is that the<lb /><lb />black vote is owned by the Democratic Party<lb />Unlike Ed Koch, I welcome Reverend Jackson's<lb />presence in the mayoral race. I welcome not Jesse<lb /><lb />the Democrat, but Jesse the black leader; not Jesse -<lb /><lb />the advance man for Michael Dukakis, and not<lb /><lb />Jesse the loyal opposition to the right wing who |<lb /><lb />rushed to shake hands with George Bush, but<lb /><lb />Jesse the spokesperson for the black agenda whom .<lb /><lb />seven and a half million people passionately sup-<lb />ported in the Democratic Party primaries. I look<lb /><lb />forward to hearing his voice in the growing.<lb />dialogue that is taking place in our community on<lb /><lb />the all-important issues of independent politics.<lb /><lb />Very soon the Democratic Party establishment, ..<lb /><lb />white and black, in cities across the country is go-<lb />ing to start giving us the business, just like they did<lb />in the presidential election: give your votes to the<lb />Democrats, theyTll say, and you'll be rewarded<lb />later.
