The action was<lb />heralded by both Board<lb />Presidents, Louis: Clark and<lb />Lawrence Behr, as a major step<lb />forward in strengtheningT the<lb />partnership between publicly<lb />supported EVERGREEN and the<lb />privately supported Downtown<lb />Greenville Association.<lb /><lb />EVERGREEN of Greenville,<lb />Inc. is a private non-profit cor-<lb />poration working for the City of<lb />Greenville to provide downtown<lb />as well as city-wide economic<lb />development services. The con-<lb />version of EVERGREEN to a<lb />membership organization in<lb />January will enable current<lb />members of DGA to become<lb />members of EVERGREEN. A<lb />city-wide membership drive will<lb />be launched immediately to<lb />recruit additional members.<lb />Groups targeted for membership<lb />will include area businesses in-<lb /><lb />terested in downtown economic<lb />development of Greenville,<lb />downtown businesses and proper-<lb />ty owners, and residents of<lb />downtown neighborhoods in-<lb />cluding Tar River, College View<lb />and West Greenville. <lb />LETTS TALK IT OVER<lb /><lb />1. What negative forces may<lb />parents pass on to their children?<lb /><lb />Discuss the following ways<lb />parents may have negative in-<lb />fluences on their children. 1. The<lb />impact of poor modeling. Sinful<lb />behavior, poor relationships, and<lb />a non-Christian life-style teach<lb />children powerfully. When<lb />husbands and wives mistreat<lb />each other in the presence of<lb />their children, such negative<lb />behavior often has an effect on<lb />~how the children will have when<lb />they themselves marry and<lb />become parents. 2. The influence<lb />of defective values. Children take<lb />note when they see that their<lb />parents prize material things<lb />over persons and profits over in-<lb />tegrity. These parental choices<lb />reach children negatively about<lb />what matters most in life. 3. The<lb />influence of misplaced priorities.<lb />When work conistently takes<lb />precedence over family life, and<lb />when leisure takes precedence<lb />over corporate worship, a<lb /><lb />negative influence is operative. 4.<lb />Ill health and disease. Not only<lb />grown children but even newborn<lb />babies may be affected by their<lb /><lb />parentsT conduct involving<lb />substance abuse or immoral<lb />behavior. 5. Bad reputations.<lb />Children may struggle for years<lb />against the legacy of their<lb />parentsT bad reputations. Other<lb />negative forces exist, but these<lb />are sufficient to highlight how<lb />crucial are the positive legacies<lb />that faithful parents give their<lb />children.<lb /><lb />2. Are parents responsible for<lb />how their children turn out? Give<lb />some reasons for your answer.<lb /><lb />No. Although most parents<lb />seem to feel that they are respon-<lb />sible for how their children turn<lb />out, the Bible and psychology<lb />both teach us they are not.<lb />Children are a gift fgrom the<lb />Lord. The Bible teaches that<lb />what God requires of all His gifts<lb />is faithful stewardship. Parents<lb />are stewards, not owners. First<lb />Corinthians 4:2 teaches that God<lb />requires faithfulness of stewards.<lb /><lb />edi ~conducting Aheir<lb />res ina ni that is<lb />it with their teaching. When<lb /><lb />* children become adults, they<lb /><lb />answer to God for their own deci-<lb /><lb />gions and choices, their own<lb /><lb />thoughts and actions, their own<lb />values and belief-systems. They<lb />are responsible for accepting or<lb />rejecting Jesus Christ as Lord of<lb />their lives. Children are not ex-<lb />tensions of their parentsT per-<lb />sonalities or egos. Because of<lb />pride, parents often desire to<lb />regard their children that way,<lb />especially when the children ex-<lb />cel. But as adults, children<lb />become persons in their own<lb />right, with their own per-<lb />sonalities, gifts, and capacities,<lb />plus their own responsibilities<lb />before God.<lb /><lb />Additionally, whatever dif-<lb />ferences separate us in life"<lb />talents, race, looks, economy,<lb />size"each Christian has the<lb />same Heavenly Father, and each<lb />is as important to Him as any<lb />other.<lb /><lb />Also, we are not born again till<lb />we know the Lord well enough to<lb />choose to obey Him and to live ac-<lb />cording to His covenant.<lb /><lb />An aloholicTs recovery is based<lb />upon his accepting personal<lb />responsibility for his condition. It<lb />is so easy to blame someone else<lb />for our shortcomings. The school<lb />dropout blames the teacher; the<lb />job dropout blames the boss; the<lb />home dropout blames the<lb />parents; sinners blame God. You<lb />must assume responsibility for<lb />your own failures.<lb /><lb />THE BRIGHT STUFF...<lb /><lb />Watch out for fats, go easy on<lb />carbohydrates. The brain produces more<lb />serotonin after starchy or sweet<lb />carbohydrates"pasto, biscuits,<lb />candy bars"are eaten; it creates<lb />more mentally energizing<lb />chemicals after protein-rich<lb />foods"tuna, chicken and lean<lb />meats"are consumed.<lb /><lb />The amount of fat a person eats<lb />in a meal may also play a role in<lb />alertness, says Judith Wurtman,<lb />Ph.D., research scientist at<lb />Massachusetts Institute of<lb />Technology and author of Manag-<lb />ing Your Mind and Mood Though<lb />Food. ~So a meal that contains<lb />lots of peanut butter, cheese or<lb />mayonnaise can put youngsters<lb />into a real stupor while theyTre<lb />busy digesting itT, says Wurt-<lb />man. That is because fat is hard<lb />to digest and blood is diverted<lb />from the brain to the digestive<lb />tract in order for the job to be<lb />accomplished.<lb /><lb />THE TRUTH ABOUT<lb />BREAKFAST...<lb /><lb />ItTs been called the most impor-<lb />tant meal of the day, and thatTs<lb />probably true, at least where kids<lb />and schoolwork are concerned.<lb />Psychologist Keith Conners of<lb />George Washington University<lb />Medical School, says ~~kids are<lb />less alert when they skip<lb />breakfastT.<lb /><lb />ast Carolina Chrysler<lb /><lb />Christmas Comes Early!<lb /><lb />AMIFM Stereo. Perhaps my<lb />contribution to the choir could be<lb />measured by the ratio between<lb />what I give and what I take.<lb /><lb />rehearsals do I give my<lb />whole attention to the musical<lb />problems of the moment and con-<lb />tribute to their solution, or do I let<lb />my mind wander or my conver-<lb />sation with my neighbor distract<lb />me while others solve the<lb />problem?<lb /><lb />Do I try to sense what is the<lb />best for the group or what is the<lb />will of the group, or do I insist<lb />that my suggestion is the best<lb />that will be heard?<lb /><lb />Do I encourage the singers<lb />around me and the director as<lb />they do their very best, or do I<lb />continually complain about the<lb />negative things that I feel and<lb />see?<lb /><lb />Do I watch those around me to<lb />see their mistakes and faults, or<lb />do I watch for opportunities to<lb />compliment them?<lb /><lb />Do I come a few minutes ahead<lb />of time to rehearsals and on Sun-<lb />day so that I can benefit from all<lb />of the rehearsal, or do I make<lb />others practice for me and then<lb />distract them and waste their<lb />time by my late entrance?<lb /><lb />My contribution to the choir is<lb />not measured against what I get<lb />from it. I cannot take what I<lb />withhold from the choir ..nd call<lb />it a gain for me. My gain will be<lb />in direct proportion to what I<lb />give.<lb /><lb />Each member of the choir and<lb />the total effort of the choir can be<lb />helped greatly by what I can give<lb />in terms of a positive attitude, a<lb />concentration of effort, and<lb />regular, prompt attendance.
