CHAVIS.<lb />JR.<lb /><lb />In the wake of Vice President<lb />George BushTs victory in the<lb />~Presidential election, millions of<lb />African-Americans be any<lb />cial and ethnic citizens of the<lb />United States are pondering the<lb />future. Will the Bush ad-<lb />ministration be similar to the<lb />Reagan administration? Will<lb />the incidents of overt racial<lb />violence continue to increase?<lb />Will the ranks of the poor and<lb />the homeless continue to in-<lb />crease? Will a Bush administra-<lb />tion continue to have construc-<lb />tive engagement with the racist<lb />apartheid regime of South<lb />Africa? And will the future for<lb />African Americans be any<lb />brighter during the next four<lb />years?<lb /><lb />The answer to these questions<lb />have to be pursued by. African-<lb />American leadership forthright-<lb />ly. The last eight years have<lb /><lb />"Thank<lb /><lb />BY ARLEE GRIFFIN, JR<lb /><lb />An article entitled, ~oThank God<lb />ItTs OverT by C.A. Dawson which<lb />appeared in a recent edition of<lb />the ~o~M? Voice contained some<lb />views and opinions that need fur-<lb />ther examination in light of our<lb />plight in the black community. In<lb />his account of election day ac-<lb />tivities at GreenvilleTs Precinct<lb />#3, the writer castigated com-<lb />munity leaders for their effort to<lb />get black candidates elected to<lb />public offices. While every<lb />registered voter does have the<lb />constitutional right to vote accor-<lb />ding to the dictates of his or her<lb /><lb />own conscience, no. person has.<lb /><lb />been devastating economically<lb />as well as politically for the<lb />African American community.<lb />Much of the progress of the<lb />struggle for racial justice and<lb />equality has eroded during the<lb />past decade. There are more<lb />people who are living in poverty<lb />today than in 1968. President<lb />Reagan was successful in mort-<lb />gaging the long term future of<lb />the nation with a national debt<lb />exceeding a trillion dollars.<lb />George Bush has won the elect-<lb />ion but he also inherited an un-<lb />precedented challenge to lead<lb />this nation in a better direction.<lb /><lb />If more of the disenfranchised<lb />and marginalized of this society<lb />would have voted then the out-<lb />come of the election could have<lb />been different. But crying about<lb />the outcome of the presidential<lb />election will not change any-<lb />thing.<lb /><lb />There is a danger that many<lb />in the African-American com-<lb /><lb />God itT<lb />needs of the black community<lb />and who have not represented the<lb />black community in the past con-<lb />tinue to exploit us by paying cer-<lb />tain blacks to pass out their<lb />literature in only predominantly<lb />black precincts on election day,<lb />thereby misleading black voters.<lb />This practice is nothing less than<lb />a new version of the old tactic of<lb />divide and conquer which has<lb />been used so effectively against<lb />us from the days of slavery to the<lb />present. The black community<lb />simply cannot afford to be<lb />betrayed and sold out for ~~twen-<lb />ty pieces of silver? by a few peo-<lb />ple in pursuit of personal gain. As<lb />Edward Burke.said in 1728, ~~the<lb /><lb />munity will become cynical and<lb />hopeless. This is no time for this<lb />community to become disillu-<lb />sioned about the future. If there<lb />is to be progress in this society<lb />toward the empowerment of ra-<lb />cially oppressed communities,<lb />then a national ~~Grass Roots<lb />Freedom MovementTT needs to<lb />be revitalized. Those who are<lb />victimized because of racism<lb />and economic exploitation must<lb />organize and must mobilized<lb />around a national agenda that<lb />calls for effective social<lb />change. In the absence of effec-<lb />tive community organizing, the<lb />future of the nation will be left<lb />to the whims of the next presi-<lb />dent. .<lb /><lb />The civil rights community<lb />along with the church, or-<lb />ganized labor, students and<lb />other concerned interests need<lb />to regroup into a viable and<lb />strategic alliance. We must all<lb />work together more than we<lb /><lb />THURSDAY NOVEMBER 24-WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 1988-THE ~MT VOICE<lb /><lb />African - Americans and George Bush<lb /><lb />have in the recent past. The con-<lb />stituencies that we represent<lb />deserve a united voice and ac-<lb />tion toward reversing the con-<lb />servative trends of this society.<lb /><lb />In addition much of the Third<lb />World waits to see if the United<lb />States will change its foreign<lb />policies particularly in Africa<lb />and in Central America. The<lb />truth is, however, American for-<lb />eign policy is directly related to<lb />domestic policy. Thus, we must<lb />see the necessity to reorganize a<lb />national progressive movement<lb />that has the capacity not only<lb />to effect the national agenda<lb />during the next four years of a<lb />Bush administration, but also<lb />to effect the world community<lb />in the interest of justice and<lb />freedom. The character of the<lb />future relationship between<lb />George Bush and African Amer-<lb />icans should only be determined<lb />by how well the struggle for jus-<lb />tice is waged.<lb /><lb />not over yet?<lb /><lb />solutions to our paramount pro-<lb />blems of unemployment and<lb />underemployment, inadequate<lb />housing, drugs, economic and<lb />political disenfranchisement,<lb />etc., must volunteer their time,<lb />talent and treasure to get can-<lb />didates elected who will provide<lb />the black community with its fair<lb />share of the public goods and<lb />resources. We must save our<lb />community from those who sell<lb />their obirthright and ours for a<lb />pot of stew.?? No<lb />other group of people in this coun-<lb />try is so badly blinded and<lb />violently victimized by party<lb />labels as we are. In times like<lb />these let us put aside parties and<lb />their promises of the past that<lb />have left us in social, political and<lb />economic oppression. Let us<lb />secure commitments from can-<lb />didates that will usher in a new<lb />day of liberation for us and<lb />justice for all. Patrone, a<lb />member of the ECU symphony, is a<lb />violinist and violist, and Hoppmann<lb />is a Saxophonist and percussionist.<lb /><lb />Among common occupational-<lb />related health problems of perfor-<lb />mers to be treated at the clinic are<lb />asthma and allergies,<lb />musculoskeletal injuries, hearing<lb />deficits, nerve entrapment, bursitis,<lb />tendonitis and motor palsy.<lb /><lb />The ECU clinic will take a<lb /><lb />provide an extensive medical histo-<lb />ry and description of practice<lb />habits. Depending upon the condi-<lb />tion, the patient may be referred to<lb />one of the medical schoolTs other<lb />subspecialists for further diagnosis.<lb /><lb />All patient visits are by appoint-<lb />ment or referral.<lb /><lb />According to Hoppmann, observa-<lb />tion of a performer's technique and<lb />habits can help physicians assess<lb />possible causes of medical problems<lb />such as muscle overuse or strain. Teenagers are bright,<lb />perceptive people and they know when they are get-<lb />ting mixed signals from adults. Here are just a few<lb />examples:<lb /><lb />e We tell our girls to be chaste and our boys to<lb />score. Girls generally feel more hesitation about ear-<lb />ly sex than guys do. But the red light we are flashing<lb />at girls all too often fails to stop them from having<lb />sex before they are ready, and instead stops them<lb />from making sure they have birth control before<lb />they do. And the green light we flash at boys makes<lb />it very unlikely that they will delay sexual activity.<lb />Teens of both sexes need a yellow light: a strong cau-<lb />tion from adults about the risks and consequences of<lb />too-early sexual activity.<lb /><lb />e We tell our teens one thing and do another.<lb />Teens have not cornered the market on irresponsible<lb />behavior. Often, adult men in their early twenties<lb />are the fathers of teenage girlsTs babies. Adults have<lb />helped to spread sexually-transmitted ~diseases.<lb />Adult men by the millions have walked away from<lb />their child support responsibilities. We adults have<lb />to clean up our act bfore we can speak with authori-<lb /><lb />RESERVE OFFICERST TRAINING CORPS<lb /><lb />ty to our children.<lb /><lb />© We bemoan the teen pregnancy problem but |<lb />deny that our own children could be having sex.<lb />Most black adults will admit that our community,<lb />like our nation as a whole, has a. serious teen<lb />pregnancy problem But too often, we fail to face up |<lb />to that problem when it confronts us in our own<lb />homes. Many parents avoid discussing sex or birth<lb />control with their children in the mistaken fear that<lb />this will ~~encourage?T their children to have sex.<lb />They look the other way even when they see clear<lb />signs that their children have become sexually ~active.<lb />Denying to ourselves and others that our children<lb />may be having sex " as 86 percent of all black<lb />teenage boys and 59 percent of all black teenage girls<lb />do by age 18 " will not help our young people avoid<lb />the negative consequences of too-early pregnancy<lb />and parenthood. But initiating honest, open, two-<lb />way communication can.<lb /><lb />For almost all of us, sex is a difficult and uncom-<lb />fortable subject.
