Will the Bush ad-ministration be similar to theReagan administration? Willthe incidents of overt racialviolence continue to increase?Will the ranks of the poor andthe homeless continue to in-crease? Will a Bush administra-tion continue to have construc-tive engagement with the racistapartheid regime of SouthAfrica? And will the future forAfrican Americans be anybrighter during the next fouryears?The answer to these questionshave to be pursued by. African-American leadership forthright-ly. Voice contained someviews and opinions that need fur-ther examination in light of ourplight in the black community. Inhis account of election day ac-tivities at GreenvilleTs Precinct#3, the writer castigated com-munity leaders for their effort toget black candidates elected topublic offices. While everyregistered voter does have theconstitutional right to vote accor-ding to the dictates of his or herown conscience, no. person has.been devastating economicallyas well as politically for theAfrican American community.Much of the progress of thestruggle for racial justice andequality has eroded during thepast decade. There are morepeople who are living in povertytoday than in 1968. PresidentReagan was successful in mort-gaging the long term future ofthe nation with a national debtexceeding a trillion dollars.George Bush has won the elect-ion but he also inherited an un-precedented challenge to leadthis nation in a better direction.If more of the disenfranchisedand marginalized of this societywould have voted then the out-come of the election could havebeen different. But crying aboutthe outcome of the presidentialelection will not change any-thing.There is a danger that manyin the African-American com-God itTneeds of the black communityand who have not represented theblack community in the past con-tinue to exploit us by paying cer-tain blacks to pass out theirliterature in only predominantlyblack precincts on election day,thereby misleading black voters.This practice is nothing less thana new version of the old tactic ofdivide and conquer which hasbeen used so effectively againstus from the days of slavery to thepresent. The black communitysimply cannot afford to bebetrayed and sold out for ~~twen-ty pieces of silver? by a few peo-ple in pursuit of personal gain. AsEdward Burke.said in 1728, ~~themunity will become cynical andhopeless. This is no time for thiscommunity to become disillu-sioned about the future. If thereis to be progress in this societytoward the empowerment of ra-cially oppressed communities,then a national ~~Grass RootsFreedom MovementTT needs tobe revitalized. Those who arevictimized because of racismand economic exploitation mustorganize and must mobilizedaround a national agenda thatcalls for effective socialchange. In the absence of effec-tive community organizing, thefuture of the nation will be leftto the whims of the next presi-dent. .The civil rights communityalong with the church, or-ganized labor, students andother concerned interests needto regroup into a viable andstrategic alliance. Thus, we mustsee the necessity to reorganize anational progressive movementthat has the capacity not onlyto effect the national agendaduring the next four years of aBush administration, but alsoto effect the world communityin the interest of justice andfreedom. The character of thefuture relationship betweenGeorge Bush and African Amer-icans should only be determinedby how well the struggle for jus-tice is waged.not over yet?solutions to our paramount pro-blems of unemployment andunderemployment, inadequatehousing, drugs, economic andpolitical disenfranchisement,etc., must volunteer their time,talent and treasure to get can-didates elected who will providethe black community with its fairshare of the public goods andresources. We must save ourcommunity from those who selltheir obirthright and ours for apot of stew.?? We must protect ourpeople from the ~~vultures? whoswarm around in _ ourneighborhoods on election daylooking to land on the uninform-ed and innocent. When we donTtOur plight also demands thatwe look beyond political partylabels, as others do so well accor-ding to recent state and nationalelections, and vote for candidateswho will make concrete com-mitments to our community. Noother group of people in this coun-try is so badly blinded andviolently victimized by partylabels as we are. In times likethese let us put aside parties andtheir promises of the past thathave left us in social, political andeconomic oppression. Let ussecure commitments from can-didates that will usher in a newday of liberation for us andjustice for all.
