          <lb />2-THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 17-WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 1988-THE ~MT VOICE<lb /><lb />~HOME INFLUENCE ON MAN~<lb /><lb />FROM: CHARLOTTE<lb /><lb />PERKINS GILMANTS ~THE<lb /><lb />HOME: ITS WORK AND<lb />INFLUENCE~<lb /><lb />The best proof of manTs<lb />dissatisfaction with the home is<lb />found in his universal absence<lb />from it. ItTs not only that his work<lb />takes him out (and he sees to it<lb />that it does!) but the man who<lb />does not ~have to work~ also goes<lb />out for pleasure.<lb /><lb />The leisure classes in any coun-<lb />try have no necessity upon them<lb />to leave home, yet their whole<lb />range of uneasy activity is to get<lb /><lb />outside, or to furnish constant<lb />diversion and entertainment, to<lb />while away the hours within. A<lb />human creature must work, play,<lb />or rest. Men work outside, play<lb />outside, and cannot rest more<lb />than so long at a time.<lb /><lb />The man maintains a home, as<lb />part of his life area, but does not<lb />himself find room in it. This is<lb />legitimate enough. It should be<lb />equally true of the woman. No<lb />human life of our period can find<lb />full exercise in a home. Both need<lb />it, to rest in; to work from; but<lb />not to stay in.<lb /><lb />This we find practically work-<lb />ed out in the average manTs at-<lb />titude toward the home. The<lb />systematised manTs work is done<lb />for the day, and he comes home<lb />to shoulder a share of the un-<lb />systematised inadequate<lb />womanTs work.<lb /><lb />What does the average man<lb />want when he comes home from<lb />work? He wants companionship,<lb />amusement; he wants ease,<lb />freedom, comfort, pleasant com-<lb />pany, talk of something new"<lb />these are the main needs. He<lb />doesnTt want to hear the scream-<lb />ing babies, an exhausted wife, ill-<lb />cooked food and the endless<lb />demands of his purse.<lb /><lb />Today, women are no longer<lb />confined to the home; advance-<lb />ment has been made and sheTs<lb />much the equal or superior most-<lb />ly to her man in diverse ways"<lb />culture, education, intelligence<lb />and income and careers. Although the mar-<lb />chers emphasized universal<lb />themes such as jobs, poverty,<lb />apartheid, and human rights,<lb />fewer than 50,000 people par-<lb />ticipated. Whereas the August<lb />1963 march attracted a crowd of<lb />250,000, and occurred during the<lb />height of the civil rights move-<lb />ment, the 1988 march evolved<lb />within a rather subdued conser-<lb />vative environment. Also, unlike<lb />1963, the recent march failed to<lb />capture the imagination of the<lb />nation and the world.<lb /><lb />Undoubtedly, one of the most<lb />striking differences was the<lb />absence of Martin Luther King<lb />Jr. KingTs presence cast a<lb />shadow over the 1963 march and<lb />his now famous ~I-Have-A-<lb />Dream~ speech electrified the<lb />crowd. KingTs speech pricked the<lb />conscience of a sympathetic na-<lb />tion that was struggling to over-<lb />come the shame and violence of<lb />Birmingham. KingTs address is<lb />still one of the most debated and<lb />controversial aspects of the civil<lb />rights era.<lb /><lb />What happened? If you had<lb />surgery on Saturday, August 27,<lb />1988 and missed the national<lb />news on Sunday, August 28, 1988,<lb />you would not have known about<lb />the march. Although the national<lb />media was somewhat less in-<lb />terested, in fairness, the 1988<lb />march was probably as well<lb />organized as the historic 1963<lb />march. Did the absence of Mar-<lb />tin Luther King Jr. make for so<lb />vast a difference? In retrospect,<lb />it was not so much the absence of<lb />King as it was A. Phillip Ran-<lb />dolph, Whitney Young, Walter<lb />Reuther and the aura and<lb />violence of Birmingham, Ala.<lb />The 1963 march happened several<lb />weeks after the April 1963 civil<lb />rights demonstrations in Birm-<lb />ingham. Birmingham shocked<lb />the nation, and in response, a<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />oWe Buy when you need it<lb />Therefore we can give<lb /><lb />you a Better Deal?<lb /><lb />3110 S. Aside from law<lb />enforcement, the Department of<lb />Housing and Urban Develope-<lb />ment (HUD), and the National<lb />Parks Service, most federal<lb />agencies ignored the protest. But<lb />equally important was the<lb />absence of black residents from<lb />the greater Washington, D.C.<lb />metropolitan region. There are<lb />several million black residents in<lb />the Washington area. Washinton,<lb />D.C. alone has a population of ap-<lb />proximately 800,000 of which 70<lb />percent are black. Why such a<lb />small crowd. Was it apathy and<lb />complacency?<lb /><lb />The answer is obvious. The<lb />place to begin is Birmingham and<lb />Selma. Both protests laid the<lb />foundation for two of the most<lb />sweeping pieces of social and<lb />civil legislation in American<lb />history, the 1964 public accom-<lb />modations bill and the voting<lb />rights bill of 1965. Both laws<lb />enlarged the black electorate and<lb />eventually created a large mid-<lb />dle class in urban America. But<lb />demographically, as the black<lb />middle class increased, the na-<lb />tionTs national priorities changed<lb />even more dramatically. The<lb />Vietman War, the space pro-<lb />gram, Watergate, and an oil<lb />crisis derailed the civil rights<lb />movement. Meanwhile, the new<lb />black elite was reeling from<lb />double-digit inflation, high<lb /><lb />unemployment, drugs, and the<lb />seemingly disintegration of the<lb />black family. And as the black<lb />community struggled for sur-<lb />vival, national black institutions<lb />such as the National Urban<lb />League, and historically black<lb /><lb />(919) 946-8693<lb /><lb />Hwy. 17 North<lb />Washington, N.C.<lb /><lb />| have hard luck and been<lb />under evil influence for<lb />many years. | could not<lb />hold a job, but one visit to<lb />Madam Eden and | have a<lb />steady job and feeling fine.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Kev. And in-<lb />asmuch that the leadership lack-<lb />ed a national strategy to teach<lb />and to preserve the legacy of the<lb />civil rights movement, an entire<lb />generation of blacks graduated<lb />from predominantly white in-<lb />stitutions into the middle class<lb />without any sensitivity to what<lb />Vincent Hardin calls ~the source<lb />of the river.~ Also, many black<lb />leaders were not clairvoyant<lb />enough to see that the<lb />technological revolution which<lb />exploded during the late 1970Ts<lb />had been in motion for the past<lb />two decades and would have oc-<lb />curred had their candidate been<lb />elected to the presidency of the<lb />United States.<lb /><lb />The tragedy is not individual<lb />naivety but the fact that an entire<lb />generation of youth matured<lb />without any sensitivity to pain<lb />and suffering of Birmingham and<lb />Selma. Accordingly, when the<lb />black leadership issued a call to<lb />celebrate the 25th anniversary of<lb />the March on Washington, many<lb />blacks questioned the value of a<lb />protest march because it is a<lb />~separatistT events; and besides,<lb />as one person noted recently, o. .<lb />. history has no practicality.~ One<lb />of the best examples of the pre-<lb />sent generationTs insensitivity oc-<lb />curred at the Democratic Na-<lb />tional Convention in July 1988.<lb />After Jesse Jackson introduced<lb />the mother of the civil rights<lb />movement, Mrs. Rosa Parks, a<lb />Jackson staff member reported-<lb />ly asked: ~WhoTs Rosa Parks?~<lb /><lb />A march is still a potent sym-<lb />bol and an effective strategy;<lb />but, meanwhile, however, itTs<lb />time for the national leadership<lb />to devise a new instrument to<lb />cross over Jordan.<lb /><lb />oPlus tax and tags Stock #88221. While<lb />there has been progress toward<lb />eliminating some of the vestiges<lb />of overt racism, the pervasive<lb />nature of racism today demands<lb />vigilance, determination and con-<lb />stant social action to prevent a<lb />march back into history. Chavis Jr. is exec-<lb />utive director of the Commis-<lb />sion for Racial Justice of the<lb />United Church of Christ.<lb /><lb />SPIN gives 'cure' for AIDS<lb /><lb />NEW YORK -- Every issue of<lb />SPIN magazine since December<lb />1987 has featured an editorial on<lb />AIDS. In the current issue, SPIN<lb />provides its youthful readers with a<lb />condom -- a Trojan to be exact.<lb /><lb />The magazine quotes Surgeon<lb />General Koop on the prevention of<lb />sexually-transmitted diseases<lb />(STDs): oCondoms are the best pre-<lb />ventive measure against AIDS,<lb />besides not having sex and practic-<lb />ing safe behavior.?<lb /><lb />~Prevention for the young and<lb />sexually active is particularly<lb />important, Nearly one in 300 col-<lb />lege students is infected wit the<lb />AIDS virus as compared to four out<lb />of every 1,000 prisoners. This new<lb />finding means that young people<lb />join homosexuals, drugs users and<lb />hemophiliacs as a high risk group.<lb /><lb />It also means that just about<lb />every college campus has a case of<lb />AIDS or HIV infection. "Safe" sex<lb />and condoms for prevention is fine<lb />is you're not infected with the AIDS<lb />virus. This same issue of SPIN,<lb /><lb />believe it or not, also has something .<lb /><lb />for those in the latter group.<lb /><lb />In an exceptional article on<lb />AIDS by Katie Leishman, SPIN<lb />(212/633-8200) provides its readers<lb /><lb />with what could be a "cure" for<lb /><lb />AIDS. Leishman reports on the<lb />work and, more importantly, results<lb />of a retired medical technologist,<lb />72-year-old Salvatore Catapano.<lb />Catapano, the author says,<lb />"appears to have found the AIDS<lb />treatment the world has been wait-<lb />ing for..." And has obtained a patent<lb /><lb />("One of only three American<lb />patents ever granted for AIDS treat-<lb />ments") which contains the state-<lb />ment: "It has been found that a<lb />complete immunization an remis-<lb />sion of a person afflicted with<lb /><lb />AIDS is really syphilis, which is<lb />treatable, but not by any anti-viral<lb />drug like AZT. Leishman reports a<lb />"fascinating discovery.: After about<lb />15 shots of the typhoid vaccine, a<lb />number of AIDS patients who had<lb /><lb />TONY BROWN<lb />er eee<lb />Syndicated Columnist<lb /><lb />AIDS may be achieved by the<lb />administration with typhoid vaccine<lb />with no observed toxicity."<lb /><lb />"The substance Catapano uses<lb />an licenses other doctors to use to<lb />treat AIDS patients is, simply,<lb />typhoid vaccine,? Leishman writes<lb />in SPIN.<lb /><lb />After 15 years of research, Cat-<lb />apano has come to the conclusion<lb />that "the source of immune suppres-<lb />sion in AIDS patients is not viral<lb />but bacterial, The patients .., are<lb />suffering from extraordinarily<lb />entrenched late-staging<lb />syphilis...Once the immune system<lb />is restored with typhoid vaccine, he<lb />says, a course of penicillin should<lb />bring the patient into remission,"<lb />the author claims.<lb /><lb />Of 200 AIDS patients treated<lb />by Catapano, only one has died, he<lb />says, and his typhoid vaccine<lb />should not be ocombined with<lb />chemotherapy -- including AZT --<lb />or radiation,"<lb /><lb />Catapano is convinced that<lb /><lb />tested negative for syphilis began to<lb />manifest classic symptoms of the<lb />disease...?<lb /><lb />Then after being treated with<lb />penicillin, othe syphilitic symptoms<lb />clear up an the tests become nega-<lb />tive,? she adds.<lb /><lb />Another ofascinating? event is<lb />reported in SPIN by Leishman:<lb />After getting his penicillin shots, a<lb />patient's AIDS test had become<lb />negative. Of "75,000 reported cases<lb />of AIDS to date in America, there<lb />have been only three published<lb />cases of patients becoming HIV<lb />negative."<lb /><lb />By publishing this information,<lb /><lb />SPIN magazine has not only helped<lb />prevent STDs, but it may save the<lb />lives of some who are already sen-<lb />tenced t death by AIDS.<lb />Tony Brown Is a syndicated<lb />columnist and television host,<lb />whose program, oTony Brown's<lb />Journal,? appears at 7:30 p.m.<lb />on Wednesday, on channels 4<lb />and 26.<lb /><lb />Support bi Advertisers<lb />Voic ce<lb /><lb />" Of The ~m<lb /><lb />MargauxT S- oYou FRESH<lb />Seafood Restaurant.<lb /><lb />We offer a variety of the Freshest<lb />Redfish, Skrod, Bluefish, Swordfish,<lb />well as Fresh Oysters and Scallops<lb /><lb />atured Spe als are Served With a Complimentary Glass of MG Vallejo (<lb /><lb />Fish inclydige Monkfish, Grouper,}<lb />Red Snapper and Many others,<lb />Call For Our FRESH Daily Selection ©<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />PSSST SESS SKATE PTET AA LEP EAT ARSE AAA ADARAAA<lb /><lb />eat<lb /><lb />£3<lb /><lb /></p>

<lb />A lesson from white Democrats<lb /><lb />THERE is at least one very good reason why none of the<lb />local Afro-American candidates for contested offices won Tues-<lb />day's election. It's called voting a straight party ticket.<lb />Afro-American voters had the opportunity to put another<lb />Afro-American in the State Senate, Republican candidate Vernon<lb />Robinson lost because not enough Afro-American voters gave<lb />him support. Too many could not wean themselves from straight<lb />party voting -- that blind Democratic Party loyalty that beats us<lb />every time,<lb /><lb />Robinson was only a few thousand votes shy of unseating<lb />Democrat Ted Kaplan. His victory could have been handed to him<lb />by people of his own color had they voted strategically.<lb /><lb />County Commission candidate Mazié Woodruff and school<lb /><lb />board candidate Naomi Jones both lost because of unsophisticated<lb />Afro-American voting.<lb />- " By voting for every Democrat on the ticket, Afro-Americans<lb />gave their surplus votes to white candidates who already had the<lb />support of the majority white votes. Thus Afro-American voters<lb />gave white candidates, in many instances, the extra power to<lb />defeat Afro-American candidates.<lb /><lb />It is extremely difficult to understand why Afro-American<lb />voters believe that they must be loyal to the Democratic Party at<lb />all cost. We, asa people, can't seem to grasp the concept of voting<lb />for the Person and not the Party.<lb /><lb />We should take a lesson from white Democrats. They vote<lb /><lb />Republican when the mood suits them. In fact, this past Tuesday<lb /><lb />i social s<lb /><lb />THE 99 VOICE-THURSDAY, NOVEMBER. 474VEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 1988-9<lb /><lb />"many white Democrats voted for Republican candidates.<lb /><lb />Anyone who doubts this need only to consider the fact that<lb />Democrats in the city outnumber Republicans by more than two<lb />to one. Add to that the voters in the county and the figure<lb />becomes 89,226 registered Democrats and 50,168 Republicans.<lb /><lb />So if Afro-Americans aren't voting for Republicans, obviously<lb />white Democrats are. How else can one explain the Republican<lb />landslides on the Board of County Commissioners, the Board of<lb />Education and in the State House? |<lb /><lb />If Afro-American Democrats need further evidence that no<lb />one is loyal to their party but them, they should look closely at the<lb />retums from some of the predominantly white and Democratic<lb /><lb />~precincts. ;<lb /><lb />- Let's look, for instance, at one of the Southwest precincts,<lb />Miller Park Recreation Center. There are 1,004 registered<lb />Democrats at that precinct and only 531 registered Republicans --<lb />a more than two to one ratio. There are only 20 Afro-American<lb />voters in that precinct.<lb /><lb />Yet, Miller Park voted overwhelming for Republican candi-<lb />dates. Woodruff came in next to last in that precinct, getting only<lb />three votes more than David Drummond. That precinct also went<lb />for the Republican incumbents on the school board.<lb /><lb />At the Philo Middle School precinct in the South Ward, there<lb />are 790 registered Democrats and 464 registered Republicans.<lb />Only 52 of its voters are Afro-American. Yet, again, Philo went<lb />Republican. Both Woodruff and Jones came in last in their respec-<lb /><lb />tive races in that precinct.<lb /><lb />Whitaker Elementary School precinct in the West Ward offers<lb />the most definitive example. The precinct has 927 registered<lb />Democrats and only 762 registered Republicans.<lb /><lb />' Yet, Republican presidential candidate George Bush got 954<lb />votes and Republican gubematorial candidate Jim Martin received<lb />983 votes. The precinct also supported Republican candidates<lb />yver Democratic candidates for the County Commissioners and<lb />the Board of Education.<lb /><lb />: If nothing else, this election has, hopefully, shown Afro-<lb />American voters the folly of voting for political parties over polit-<lb />ical candidates. Nothing matters other than the individual candi-<lb />date for office.<lb /><lb />It takes a little more time to vote for individuals rather than<lb />parties, but it's the way smart voters vote to assure that the people<lb />they want in office get in office no matter what their political<lb />affiliation.<lb /><lb />$1.75 million {Continued from page 1)<lb /><lb />qualifying community develop- mediate notification of all eligible<lb />ment corporations.
