It was a major news and<lb />political event for Greenville.<lb />There was music, free barbeque,<lb />a big crowd, television coverage<lb /> by all major networks and live<lb /><lb />~ radio coverage by 1340 AM<lb />Radio, WOOW. Also, on the plat-<lb />form was almost every promi-<lb />nent democrat in the entire state:<lb />former Governor Jim Hunt,<lb />Secretary of Agriculture Jim<lb /><lb />Graham, and even Al Gore from<lb />Tennessee, who was himself a<lb />Presidential nominee before be-<lb />ing defeated by Michael Dukakis<lb />and Jesse Jackson. Contrary to The ~MT<lb />Voice, other news media have ig-<lb />nored details leading up to elec-<lb />tions. Except for WOOW 1340 AM<lb />Radio, very little or nothing is be-<lb />ing aired to remind voters that<lb />important elections are right<lb />around the corner. Voter apathy<lb />is a big problem within our elec-<lb />torial process. It seems that so-<lb />meone should be saying<lb />something in the media. The ~MT<lb />Voice and WOOW are facing that<lb />civic obligation and should be<lb />saluted and commended for do-<lb />ing So.<lb /><lb />Afro-Americans living in Pitt<lb />County are exposed to more TV<lb />and Radio now, than ever before.<lb />Unfortunately, most of it is wor-<lb />thless garbage which pollutes the<lb />minds of our impressionable<lb />young people. Some radio sta-<lb />tions in our area do nothing ex-<lb /><lb />I<lb /><lb />Tawana Brawley<lb /><lb />Times, which revealed the panel's<lb />conclusions on Tuesday.<lb /><lb />During an interview program broad-<lb />cast on WLIB, a black-community<lb />oriented radio station in New York<lb />City, Sharpton said the three black<lb />activists would lead a protest in<lb />Brooklyn this afternoon that will<lb />omake the whole city stand still.?<lb /><lb />At the news conference in Newark,<lb />Sharpton challenged the grand jury<lb />and the New York Times to "give us<lb />one name of one witness that can<lb />establish that this was a hoax."<lb /><lb />Mason challenged Abrams and U.<lb />Attomey Rudolph Giuliani in Manh<lb />tan to odebate the racist system."<lb /><lb />Guiliani's spokeswoman, Debor<lb />Corley, said Guiliani issued the f<lb /><lb />1)<lb />a<lb />ot<lb /><lb />Fi<lb /><lb />Editor<lb /><lb />cept broadcast unwholesome pro-<lb />grams that focus on fads,<lb />fashions, music and advertising.<lb />Of course radio, TV and<lb />newspaper owners can air<lb />whatever they please within the<lb />law. But something is wrong<lb />when major segments of the<lb />media ignore the important con-<lb />cerns of our communities. When<lb />was the last time you heard an<lb />announcement on WKISS 102 FM<lb />concerning anything about im-<lb />proving the quality of life in the<lb />Afro-American community?<lb /><lb />When was the last time that<lb />you read an article in THE DAI-<lb />LY REFLECTOR about the low<lb />voter turnouts or what the Board<lb />of Elections is doing to improve<lb />voter participation. How many<lb />videos on MTV or BET are real-<lb />ly wholesome and send a positive<lb />influence to our youth. Here in<lb />Pitt County, we are in the begin-<lb />ning of a new era. The ~MT Voice<lb />and WOOW are trying to help<lb />lead the way. They are showing<lb />that good media can be infor-<lb />mative and entertaining at the<lb />same time. Use it wisely.<lb /><lb />Parents, you can make a big<lb />difference in how well your child<lb />does in school.<lb /><lb />Listen to what teachers say:<lb /><lb />1. Create a healthy, suppor-<lb />tivehome environment. Make sure<lb />your child gets enough rest and<lb />eats breakfast, preferably not in<lb />front of the television. Know your<lb />childTs friends.<lb /><lb />2. Read to your child and let<lb />him see you reading for your own<lb />pleasure; heTll learn by your ex-<lb />ample.<lb /><lb />3. Keep up with your childTs<lb />activities on a day to day basis. Go<lb />over his homework with him be-<lb />fore he passes it in. Note the dates<lb />of upcoming school events on a<lb />calendar sothat your childarrives<lb />prepared for them. And to make<lb />the teacherTs job a bit easier, sign<lb />and return school papers<lb />promptly.<lb /><lb />4. Inform your childTs teacher<lb />of any problems or new situations<lb />that arise at home. If a teacher<lb />knows that a childTs parents are<lb />getting a divorce, that thereTs been<lb />a death in the family or that a new<lb />baby has joined the household, he<lb />or she will be better equipped to<lb />help the child work through the<lb />problem or adjust to the new situ-<lb />ation.<lb /><lb />cis ii Rt rs sh ae ie<lb /><lb />Physical therapists open<lb />outpatient clinic at ECU<lb /><lb />A treatment program to help<lb />people with aching backs and<lb />pain in shoulders, elbows and<lb />knees is underway at East<lb />Carolina University in the<lb />Department of Physical<lb />Therapy.<lb /><lb />The department, a part of the<lb />ECU School of Allied Health<lb />Sciences, has established an out-<lb />patient clinic specializing in or-<lb />thopedic physical therapy<lb />applications.<lb /><lb />oWe considered calling it a<lb />back clinic so that people could<lb />better understand what we do,?<lb />said George Hamilton, chairman<lb />of the Physical Therapy pro-<lb />gram. But he said calling it a<lb />back clinic tended to limit the<lb />wide range of services and treat-<lb />ment the clinic will provide.<lb /><lb />oThe clinic can help people<lb />with back problems, and pro-<lb />blems associated with pain in the<lb />muscles and in the joints of the<lb />body,?T he said.<lb /><lb />oAnybody who has low back<lb />pain, whiplash injuries, bursitis,<lb />tennis elbow, post fracture or<lb />some type of injury that causes<lb />the joint to be weak, painful or<lb />stiff can be helped by physical<lb />therapy,? he said. ~~We will also<lb />work to establish function in a<lb />joint after injury or surgery,?T he<lb />said.<lb /><lb />The clinic will take referrals by<lb />physicians or individuals can call<lb />the Department of Physical<lb />Therapy at 757-4135 or 757-6961 to<lb />set up an appointment.<lb /><lb />Hamilton said the clinic is be-<lb />ing opened to provide a place for<lb />physical therapy faculty to main-<lb />tain their clinical skills while pro-<lb />viding a service to the citizens of<lb />Greenville and eastern North<lb /><lb />Carolina. He said the clinic will<lb />also be a teaching resource for<lb />students and will assist in the col-<lb />lection of research information<lb />for studies on the effectiveness of<lb />various treatments. '<lb /><lb />The physical therapy depart-<lb />ment at ECU began in 1969 as one<lb />of the programs offered in the<lb />then new School of Allied Health.<lb />Although the program currently<lb />graduates about 24 students a<lb />year, the demand by students to<lb />major in Physical Therapy is<lb />high. Hamilton said the depart-<lb />ment gets more than 200 applica-<lb />tions for the spaces available<lb />each year in the curriculum. He<lb />said the department gets a cons-<lb />tant stream of calls and letters<lb />from potential employers outlin-<lb />ing the opportunities for<lb />graduates of the program.<lb /><lb />In past years the physical<lb />therapy program has provided a<lb />limited amount of clinical ser-<lb />vice, primarily to ECU students<lb />and faculty. This is the first time<lb />that it has offered a full time, full<lb />service clinic to the public.<lb /><lb />The Physical Therapy<lb />Department and its clinic is<lb />located in the Belk Allied Health<lb />Building. Therapy rooms on the<lb />first floor of the building contain<lb />an array of sophisticated equip-<lb />ment. There are tables for<lb />therapeutic exercise and<lb />massage and special exercise<lb />machines designed for<lb />manipulating certain muscles<lb />and joints.<lb /><lb />One of the machines is actual-<lb />ly a type of robot, called a<lb />Biodex, that can be programmed<lb />to enhance muscle and tendon<lb />development in the knee and<lb />other extremity joints. If the problem is<lb />something that cannot be helped<lb />by physical therapy then the<lb />therapist will suggest seeing a<lb />physician.<lb /><lb />oOur intent is to work closely<lb />with the medical community in<lb />helping people with musculo-<lb />skeletal problems,?T he said.<lb /><lb />He said that one of the goals for<lb />the program is to combine the pa-<lb />tient care services offered by the<lb />faculty of the Department of<lb />Physical Therapy with the pa-<lb />tient care services offered by<lb />medical slchool faculty.<lb /><lb />o~We see physical therapy as an<lb />extension of the physician,?<lb />Hamilton said.<lb /><lb />He said medical doctors can<lb />treat patients by administering<lb />drugs, performing surgery or by<lb />physical intervention. But he said<lb />physicians sometimes forget the<lb />physical intervention and rely<lb />solely on drugs and surgery.<lb /><lb />An example might be a patient<lb />who sees a physician for back<lb />pain. After examining the patient<lb />and taking x-rays, if the doctor<lb />can find no disease or major<lb />structural deficiency causing the<lb />problem the patient is sometimes<lb />told that the condition is fleeting<lb />and that it will get better with<lb />pain medication and rest.<lb /><lb />o~Sometimes they do get better<lb />and sometimes they donTt,TT said<lb />Hamilton. These minor problems<lb />sometimes grow into greater pro-<lb />blems because the patient will<lb />usually cut down on physical<lb />activity.<lb /><lb />ooAs you cut down on activities<lb />you weaken your muscle and<lb />joint structure and allow<lb />biomechanical alterations to oc-<lb />cur,T Hamilton said. ~~You then<lb />may be placed in a sudden<lb />demanding situation and your<lb />body canTt respond. When you<lb />canTt respond you _ injure<lb />yourself,? he said.<lb /><lb />oEarly intervention and pa-<lb />tient education by the physical<lb />therapist can frequently reduce<lb />the extent of these adverse<lb />biomechanical changes and pre-<lb />vent more sever disability from<lb />occurring,? he said.<lb /><lb />Physical therapy faculty will<lb />be involved in providing patient<lb /><lb />(Continued on page 8)<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />COME SPEND AN INCREDIBLE DAY WITH US!!... is the invita-<lb />tion these two personalities extend to everyone throughout Pitt County<lb />and surrounding areas.
