BARNES<lb /><lb />FAMILY MATTERS"~~NO<lb />HELP ON THE HOMEFRONTT<lb /><lb />BY"DAVE BRANON<lb /><lb />LetTs look at some of the dif-<lb />ficulties single parents face and<lb />make some suggestions for<lb />handling them.<lb /><lb />1. Confusion of Roles"A<lb />parentTs role in the family is to be<lb />either a father or a mother, but<lb />not both. Sometimes when one<lb />spouse is gone, the remaining<lb />parent reassures the child by say-<lb />ing that he or she will become<lb />both the mommy and the daddy.<lb />That sounds good in a pep talk,<lb />but it isnTt possible. By GodTs<lb />design, we are equipped to han-<lb />dle only one role. A better solu-<lb />tion would be to find a trustwor-<lb />thy person, an aunt or uncle, a<lb />grandmother or grandfather, to<lb />provide the missing role model.<lb /><lb />A related danger that single<lb />parents face is the tendency to<lb />become a ~palT or ~buddyT to the<lb />children. The parent needs so-<lb />meone to talk to so he or she<lb />begins to see the children as a<lb />sounding board. This may negate<lb />the more important parent-child<lb />relationship that must continue to<lb />exist. It becomes very difficult to<lb />discipline a ~buddyT. Therefore, is<lb />it vital for the single parent to<lb />develop good frienships outside<lb />the home.<lb /><lb />2. Time Pressures"Children<lb />are demanding. ItTs not their<lb />fault, of course, but they need<lb />almost constant attention. When<lb />two parents are present, they can<lb />pinch-hit for each other and work<lb />together to make the task a little<lb />easier. But what happens when<lb />there is no backup parent?<lb />Frustration mounts. Anger rises.<lb />Tension grows. Communication<lb />stops. When a single parent must<lb />be the sole provider, the maid,<lb />and the breadwinner, a change is<lb />imperative.<lb /><lb />Perhaps the single parent<lb />needs to cut down on the<lb />workload at home. This can be<lb />done in some cases by recogniz-<lb />ing that the house doesnTt have to<lb />look like a picture in BETTER<lb />HOMES AND GARDENS all the<lb />time. Also, the children can be<lb />recruited to help. If they can see<lb />that more than ever they need to<lb />help, theyTll probably be willing<lb />to run the vacuum, throw some<lb />clothes in the wash, or do the<lb />dishes.<lb /><lb />3. Loneliness"Single parents<lb />often feel as if they are stranded<lb />on a desert island of kids. When<lb />one of them brings home a bad<lb />report card, who can you talk to<lb />about it? When another decides to<lb />get sick in the middle of the night,<lb />who can you consult? When all<lb />youTve heard for three days is<lb />baby talk, can you still carry on<lb />an intelligent conversation?<lb />Single parents may not be alone,<lb />but they do get lonely.<lb /><lb />This is where a Christian<lb />friend, an understanding parent,<lb />a Close brother or sister, or a<lb />compassionate fellow employee<lb />can help. But donTt use these peo-<lb />ple as a hazardous waste dump<lb />where all you do is unload your<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Sey<lb />%.. Discipline"One problem<lb />that single parents have with<lb />discipline is that they think<lb />~single parently.T Instead of<lb />treating a situation as he or she<lb />would if both parents were in-<lb />volved, the parent worries about<lb />how being alone will affect the<lb />discipline. He or she fears that<lb />the child will become bitter or<lb />feel rejected. The key is to give<lb />loving discipline that is fair, con-<lb />sistent, and forgiving. Also keep<lb />in mind that with added<lb />pressures of life comes the<lb />tendency to punish on the basis of<lb />feelings rather than because of<lb />what the child did wrong. Be<lb />careful. This can lead to abuse.<lb /><lb />Being a single parent may not<lb />be an ideal situation, yet good<lb />things can result from it. Often<lb />the parent and children establish<lb />strong bonds because each<lb />realizes how important he is to<lb />the other. Also, the family can<lb />learn lessons in understanding<lb />that those outside the single-<lb />parent household do _ not<lb /><lb />comprehend.<lb /><lb />If you are a single parent, be<lb />encouraged. Follow GodTs<lb />guidelines for Christian living,<lb />place your trust in His protection<lb />and guidance, and find fellowship<lb />with a good, Bible-believing, lov-<lb />ing congregation. With GodTs<lb />help, you are not alone in your<lb />task.<lb /><lb />FAMILY SCRIPTURES: |<lb /><lb />BY BEATRICE MAYE<lb /><lb />1. God has equipped each<lb />parent to handle a specific role in<lb />the home. (Psalm 68:5, Pro-<lb />verbes 4:1; Timothy 5:1,2.)<lb /><lb />d 2. It is vital for our mental<lb />health to rest from our labors and<lb />get away from stress. (Exodus<lb />23:12; Mark 6:31)<lb /><lb />3. Christians need each other<lb />for support and guidance. (Gala-<lb />tians 6:2,10; 1 Thessalonians<lb />5:11-14)<lb /><lb />4. Although children do need<lb />discipline, parents must be fair in<lb />applying it. What he found, Dudley said,<lb />was a man carrying a Fuller brush<lb />kat and his own "fortune" tured out<lb />to be one dollar for his first day's<lb />work and a total profit of about $27<lb />for his first week's efforts. Dudley<lb />pushed Fuller products door-to-door<lb />in New York for five years before<lb />retuming to Greensboro where he<lb />became a branch manager for the<lb />company. But soon after assuming<lb />the position, the entrepreneurial bug<lb />began to hit Dudley. Armed with<lb />years of door-to-door sales experi-<lb />ence he decided to make his own<lb />products to sell rather than selling<lb />someone else's goods. Beginning<lb />his venture, he returned to a skill<lb />which had carried him through<lb />school: studying. Only this time he<lb />was Studying how to manufacture<lb />products. While most manufactur-<lb />ers spend years in laboratories cre-<lb />ating products, Dudley took anoth-<lb />er, less traveled route.<lb /><lb />"I realized that everything you<lb />need is in the library, so if you read<lb />and study anything you want to<lb />know is already in books, said<lb />Dudley. "I researched formulations<lb />and I took a little that | had learned<lb />from people already in the business<lb />and leamed how to make my own<lb />products.<lb /><lb />Dudley's routine became one<lb />of making products at night and<lb />gelling them by day. In 1968, his<lb /><lb />first year in business, he pulled<lb />down a $1,000 profit. In 1970, he<lb />said, he "kind of got going and by<lb /><lb />{<lb /><lb />1971 the business "really did<lb />good. !<lb /><lb />But-in 1976, the bottom<lb />dropped oyt for Dudley, who had<lb />moved to Chicago with his wife to<lb />continue their budding hair care<lb />products business.<lb /><lb />"I went way down and I went<lb />bankrupt, he said. "But I didn't act<lb />it and we didn't live it. I still lived<lb />in the worldTs tallest apartment<lb />building. I made it because I kept<lb />my mind on my future. I kept my<lb />mind on what I wanted and off the<lb />things that I didn't want.<lb /><lb />And Dudley bounced back. He<lb /><lb />That drives me. Some people need<lb />to climb mountains and do all those<lb />other things. I like this challenge.<lb />Much has changed for Dudley<lb />since he faced bankruptcy in the<lb />1970s. He is the head of an enter-<lb />prise that employs more than 260<lb />people. At his plant, his products<lb />are formulated, manufactured,<lb />packaged and distributed. Hundreds<lb />of beauticians across the country<lb />and in the Virgin Islands promote<lb />his hair care products and make<lb />regular treks to Dudley Products<lb />conventions and workshops. In<lb />March, he and his family moved<lb /><lb />"I enjoy Showing people that to every disadvan-<lb />tage there is an e equal advantage. That drives me.<lb /><lb />Some people nee<lb /><lb />to climb mountains and do all<lb /><lb />those other things. I like this challenge."<lb /><lb />-- Joe L. Dudley Sr.<lb /><lb />returned to North Carolina with his<lb />business on the rebound and a<lb />renewed determination to prove<lb />nay-sayers wrong. Feeling the<lb />same sense of loss as when his first<lb />girlfriend was taken from him,<lb />Dudley said the distaste of losing<lb />brought him back and keeps him<lb />going today.<lb /><lb />"I look back and ask myself,<lb />~How did I keep doing what | was<lb />doing when I didn't have any<lb />money and things were very<lb />bad?T, Dudley said. "It's the chal-<lb />lenge of doing something you've<lb />been told you can't do. They said<lb />we couldn't distribute our own<lb />products that we'd have to have a<lb />middleman. We distribute our<lb />products directly from our plant to<lb /><lb />the beauticians and suppliers. They<lb />said you've got to have someone<lb />with a lot of experience. I enjoy<lb />showing people that to every disad-<lb />vantage there is an equal advantage.<lb /><lb />WESTEND LAUNDROMAT<lb /><lb />Corner W. 14th St. & Farmville Bivd.<lb />@ VIDEO GAMES @e SODAS & SNACKS<lb />AVAILABLE<lb /><lb />COME AND WASH WITH US " ENJOY OUR<lb />CLIMATE CONTROLLED ATMOSPHERE "<lb />WITH OUR TV AND KISS RADIO LOUNGE!<lb /><lb />Call 752-1581<lb />Jacksons, Owners/Operators<lb /><lb />D. But in the midst of all<lb />the success, Dudley remains a<lb />down-to-earth, humble man, who<lb />is not at all ashamed to admit his<lb />shortcomings or to keep in tune<lb />with the people that surround him.<lb /><lb />During one of his March con-<lb />ventions, Dudley escorted busloads<lb />of people to his home for a visit<lb />and personally drove some of his<lb /><lb />for State Gate<lb /><lb />PAID FOR BY THE COMMIT TEE<lb />PO ELECT CHARLES MeL AWHORN,<lb /><lb />ogee ce co pede el eee<lb /><lb />THURSDAY, APRIL 14-WEDNESDAY.
