As of<lb />February, 1964, the motels were<lb />still undecided as to what to do.<lb />At one point three motels were<lb />teady to desegregate according<lb />toa plan, but one withheld and at<lb />a later date that motel voluntari-<lb />ly permitted a desegregated din-<lb />ner in its restaurant. This situa-<lb />tion remains confusing. It is felt<lb />by the Committee that a very<lb />serious error may have been<lb />made by us'ng an all-white sub-<lb />committee in working with the<lb />motels.<lb /><lb />Two restaurants<lb />desegregated, and three have<lb />been isolated incidents of<lb />Negroes eating in normally<lb />segregated facilities. On October<lb />10, 1963, the United States Air<lb />Force Band rendered a concert<lb />and stayed in motels all over the<lb />City with its Negro members.<lb /><lb />The same subcommittee met<lb />with the board of directors of the<lb />Greenville MerchantsT Associa-<lb />tion in July, 1963, to discuss a<lb />petition by the Progressive<lb />Citizens' Council. As a result of<lb />this meeting the board of direc-<lb />lors immediately published a<lb />resolution stating that they en-<lb />cruraged all merchants to adopt<lb />nondiscriminatory employment<lb />and service practices<lb /><lb />This subcommittee met with<lb />the City Council in regard to the<lb />petition by the Progressive<lb />CitizensT Council. As a result of<lb />this meeting, the City Council im-<lb />mediately issued a resolution<lb /><lb />have ,<lb /><lb />service policies and enpowered<lb />the Mayor to establish a Good<lb />Neighbor Committee.<lb /><lb />In September, 1963, the Green-<lb />ville Ministerial Association<lb />desegregated its membership.<lb /><lb />¢ subcommittee met with<lb />the city officials and county of-<lb />ficials and accomplished the hir-<lb />ing of Negroes and the<lb />desegregation of city facilities<lb />such as the hall and the cour-<lb />troom of the Pitt County<lb />Courthouse.<lb /><lb />Prior to the birth of the Inter-<lb />racial Committee, there were<lb />desegregated facilities in the<lb />County. Most prominent of these<lb />were East Carolina College. the<lb />Municipal Library, and the Coun-<lb />ty Health Department.<lb /><lb />The Pitt County Interracial<lb />Committee as a whole is active-<lb />ly engaged in a public relations<lb />and educational venture. Supporting<lb />Daffodil Days means giving hope<lb />to cancer patients and giving<lb /><lb />- yourself a touch of spring.?<lb /><lb />Volunteers will be taking dona-<lb /><lb />tions for the flowers, which are<lb />shipped from the State of<lb />- Washington especially for the<lb />- festival, at $3.00 for a bouquet of<lb />- 10, or 30 cents each, or $1.50 per<lb />* box.<lb /><lb />In addition to the money col-<lb /><lb />lected from donations by. the<lb /> general public, Gantz and Paige<lb />- hope the majority of funds will be<lb />raised through advance pur-<lb /><lb />chases by local businesses and<lb /><lb />: corporations.<lb /><lb />We expect tremendous suc-<lb /><lb />: cess from business and industry.<lb />~ $éme companies could purchase<lb /><lb />enough flowers for every<lb />secretary, as a token of apprecia-<lb />tion. Others could purchase bou-<lb /><lb />oquets and have them donated to<lb />local hospitals, for the patients,?<lb />Gantz said. Most of our funds<lb />Will be raised through large<lb />orders placed in advance of Daf-<lb />fodil Days,? he added.<lb /><lb />For more information on Daf-<lb />fodil Days, including details on<lb />advance sales, contact the Pitt<lb />Caunty Unit of the American<lb />Cancer Society, at 752-2574.<lb /><lb />Questions<lb /><lb />(Gpntinued from page 2)<lb /><lb />16. He further com-<lb />mented that: Since the Governor<lb />has been in office, we have add-<lb />ed an additional 26,000 jobs in the<lb />state. We are currently one of the<lb />seven states being considered for<lb />the Super Collider, which would<lb />not only have a great inpact on<lb />the northeastern part of the<lb />Raleigh metropolitan area, but<lb />would have a carry over effect in-<lb />to eastern North Carolina.?<lb /><lb />Education is another of his con-<lb />cerns. He stated that: While the<lb />basic education plan is a step in<lb />the right direction representing a<lb />commitment to improve our<lb />system, the manner in which it is<lb />constructed is basically ill-<lb />conceived. The dollars spent<lb />could be better utilized by<lb />eliminating some of the ad-<lb />ministration cost and concen-<lb />trating more on instilling the pro-<lb />per values and motivation in our<lb />students, prior to them reaching<lb />the 5th and 6th grades, which is<lb />considered a point of no return.<lb />North CarolinaTs basic education<lb />program does not address the<lb />fact that we have a 26% illiteracy<lb />rate. This physical education<lb />program is an individualized<lb />movement education program<lb />providing mainstreaming and<lb />daily success experiences for all<lb />elementary children regardless<lb />of mental or physical ability. The<lb />program has been implemented<lb />in 49 states, Canada and the<lb />Virgin Islands. Pitt County will<lb />be the first school system in<lb />North Carolina to receive inser-<lb />vice training in Every Child A<lb />WinnerT.<lb /><lb />In 1969, Martha Owens, a con-<lb />cerned member of the PTA in<lb />Ocilla, Ga., in the Irwin County<lb />School System, wrote the Every<lb />Child A WinnerTT will improve<lb />fitness and motor skill while also<lb />enhancing academics, Mrs.<lb />Owens said. The most important<lb />thing we do is make children feel<lb />good about themselves.?T<lb /><lb />Mrs. Owens said the program<lb />design provides developmental<lb />movement experiences for<lb />children centered on themes of<lb />space awareness, body<lb />awareness, quality of body move-<lb />ment and relationships. These<lb />themes are taught through<lb />creative games, creative dance<lb />and educational gymnastics. The<lb />project slogan Every Child A<lb />WinnerT finds expression<lb />through the discovery to reach<lb />their personal potential, and win-<lb />ning occurs as each child does his<lb /><lb />i<lb /><lb />or her best.<lb />Traditional physical education<lb />deals primarily with<lb /><lb />manipulative and locomotor<lb />skills such as jumping, hopping<lb />and skipping which virtually<lb />eliminates many physically han-<lb />dicapped children. This program<lb />deals with diversity and without<lb />discrimination. These teeth seem<lb />to twist and drift out of place<lb />because the full support is not<lb />available. This is why it is so im-<lb />portant to replace missing teeth<lb />in your mouth even is it may not<lb />be obvious to your appearance,<lb /><lb />Teeth are usually replaced in<lb /><lb />three different ways, each usual-<lb />ly depending on the patiencesT<lb />preference, the number of teeth<lb />that are missing, and the condi-<lb />tion of the remaining teeth. These<lb />replacements are dentures, par-<lb />tial dentures, and fixed bridges.<lb />Implants (surgical placement of<lb />teeth in the mouth) are also<lb />becoming very popular in replac-<lb />ing missing teeth. Dentures are<lb />recommended when a person has<lb />lost: all of his/her natural teeth.<lb />Even though dentures replace all<lb />teeth, donTt ignore your regular<lb />dental visits just, because. cg eee i<lb />donTt have any natural teeth 4<lb />gum: :tissue under the denture<lb />changes as the person ages.<lb />These changes can result in a<lb />poor fitting denture causing sore<lb />spots if the denture is not<lb />adjusted.<lb /><lb />A partial denture can replace<lb />as few as | tooth and as many as<lb />27 teeth. This appliance can be<lb />removed from the mouth by the<lb />patient. You may find it<lb />necessary to remove it after<lb />eating to rinse your mouth of food<lb />particles. A fixed bridge on the<lb />other hand is not removeable by<lb />the: patient. It is connected 1-4<lb />teeth in one specific area. This is<lb />a rather expensive procedure but<lb />by.far the most practical if your<lb />remaining teeth will support a<lb />fixed bridge.<lb /><lb />Keep in mind that all of your<lb />teeth serve a purpose.
