A year later, Coach Stasavich assumed<lb />the dual role of athletic director and head football coach.<lb /><lb />His East Carolina football teams were an immediate<lb />success. <lb />PAT DYE<lb />HEAD FOOTBALL COACH<lb /><lb />Year One of what Coach Pat Dye hopes will be the oPat<lb />Dye Era? at East Carolina will feature bruising defense on<lb />the part of the oWild Dogs,? and what Coach Dye hopes will<lb />be ooffense that can score some points.?<lb /><lb />To Patrick Fain Dye, football means one thing " WIN-<lb />NING. When he talks about winning football games he also<lb />talks about ocold blooded players,? odedicated athletes? and<lb />opreparation? for living the rest of a lifetime.<lb /><lb />Dye should know quite a bit about all subject areas. Asa<lb />player and as a coach, he has always been a winner even<lb />though he quickly points out that oI havenTt won a game here<lb />yet and ITm actually a loser because Alabama lost to Notre<lb />Dame in the Sugar Bowl.?<lb /><lb />_ But virtually everyone knows of the mystical Alabama<lb />football program. And, almost everone knows Dye was a<lb />two-time All-America player at Georgia in 1959 and 1960<lb />while blocking for teammate Fran Tarkenton. Dye also<lb />earned playing experience in Canada and in the military<lb />before turning to coaching in 1965.<lb /><lb />For the last nine years, he has coached the linebackers<lb />and handled many recruiting chores for the legendary Paul<lb />oBear? Bryant. He knows how to win and what it takes to<lb />win:<lb /><lb />oI believe strongly in the kicking game,? Dye admits.<lb />oKicking cost us in the Sugar Bow! but ITve seen its import-<lb />ance in all my years of coaching. Then, to win, you must<lb />keep the opposition from scoring which means you must<lb />have a strong defense. And thirdly, but in very close order,<lb />a team must be able to score some points and win.?<lb /><lb />In DyeTs appointment announcement, Chancellor Dr. Leo<lb />W. Jenkins said: oThe Dye Has Been Cast.? In accepting the<lb />head coaching position at East Carolina, Dye said: oI want to<lb />continue East CarolinaTs winning tradition and help the<lb />program grow and improve. A football team must have a<lb />heart,? Dye said, oand I hope the heart of this football team<lb />will be in eastern North Carolina.?<lb /><lb />Thus, the oPat Dye Era? is playing its first campaign.<lb />Dye himself admits that oI wanted to find out if I am capable<lb />of being a head football coach.? For East Carolina players<lb />and fans, 1974 will be a year of great anticipation and expect-<lb />ations.<lb /><lb />And, with the intensity and purpose of Pat Dye, he will<lb />try to reach every lofty goal.<lb /><lb />Welcome to Year One.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />A BIOGRAPHICAL LOOK AT PAT DYE .. .<lb /><lb />YEARS AT EAST CAROLINA: First.<lb /><lb />RESPONSIBILITIES: Head Football Coach.<lb /><lb />PREVIOUS COACHING EXPERIENCE: Joined the<lb />University of Alabama staff on June 14, 1965. Our main goal, which will be a continual, pro-<lb />gressive type of thing, is to develop a growing program, one<lb />which improves each year and one that is competitive with<lb />teams on our schedule. We want our program to be the kind<lb />that parents will be proud for their sons to take part in, one<lb />that high school coaches want players to take part in and one<lb />that provides a growing experience for each athlete that<lb />comes here to leave as a bigger and better person.?<lb /><lb />ON REASON FOR COMING TO EAST CAROLINA . .<lb /><lb />oMy interest started four years ago when Mike McGee<lb />went to Duke University. A close friend and former room-<lb />mate in college now living in Greenville called me in refer-<lb />ence to the job. Of course, at the time, Sonny Randle was in<lb />line for the job. When the opening came this year, my friend<lb />called again and I contacted Coach Stasavich and he asked<lb />me for an interview. It was actually the first head coaching<lb />job I had interviewed for.?<lb /><lb />oThere were several things that impressed me about the<lb />situation here. First, in meeting with Dr. Jenkins, I was<lb />convinced that he was behind the athletic program 100 per<lb />cent. Next, I was convinced that East Carolina had the<lb />academic background to recruit top athletes, to upgrade and<lb />build to the tradition which has already been started. Be-<lb />lieve me, East Carolina has a fine winning tradition. We are<lb />in an area which produces good athletes, in an area where<lb />football means a great deal to the people and in an area<lb />which can provide what I like to call othe heart? of a football<lb />team.?<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Ae UsRIMASSih Ain psd a URNA hs<lb /><lb />pn nd ~~ - =o :<lb /><lb />:<lb />a<lb />j<lb />i<lb />4<lb />4<lb />|<lb />i<lb />&amp;<lb />is<lb /><lb />i:<lb />Hy<lb />ii}<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /></p>

          <lb />SET TO STRIKE: Linebacker Danny Kepley (42) closes in for strike<lb />on North Carolina receiver Earl Bethea in 1973 game at Chapel Hill.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />WILD DOGS ~74<lb /><lb />The vaunted oWild Dogs? have become a legend to East<lb />Carolina fans and around the Southern Conference. The<lb />oWild Dogs,? for those who are wondering, is the nickname<lb />attached to the Pirates heavyweight defensive unit which<lb />last season led the Southern Conference in rushing and<lb />scoring defense as well as total defense and produced no less<lb />than three all-conference players, a national defensive<lb />player of the week and four SC players of the week.<lb /><lb />The oWild Dogs? received their name in 1972 from now<lb />departed assistant coach Jon Matlock. After two years of<lb />development, the 1974 version promises to be the most ex-<lb />perienced and by far, the most vicious.<lb /><lb />Nine of 11 starters from last year return this year includ-<lb />ing All-America candidate Danny Kepley and his supporting<lb />linebacker corps of Billy Hibbs, Gary Niklason, and Butch<lb />Strawderman. Two veteran and talented defensive tackles,<lb />Ken Moore and Buddy Lowery, also return to anchor the line<lb />which will be even stronger with the move of all-conference<lb />defensive end Cary Godette to middle guard.<lb /><lb />If the oWild Dogs? had a weakness in 1973, it was pass<lb />defense where they finished sixth in the SC. That probably<lb />won't be a weakness in 1974 because two sophomores"Jim<lb />Bolding and Reggie Pinkney"return with a solid year of<lb />experience and a new defensive look.<lb /><lb />So look for the oWild Dogs? to oFly Around? in 1974. It<lb />is, in effect, the last stand for the oWild Dogs? because nine<lb />will be leaving. In 1975, it may have to be something differ-<lb />ent. But in 1974, the oWild Dogs? will search and destroy.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />MEET THE<lb />PIRATES<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />42 DANNY KEPLEY<lb /><lb />LINEBACKER<lb /><lb />6-1 215 , Sr.<lb /><lb />e TWO-TIME ALL-SOUTHERN CONFERENCE<lb /><lb />e TWO-TIME ALL-STATE<lb /><lb />¢ NATIONAL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE<lb />WEEK (NOV. 13, 1973)<lb /><lb />* TWO-TIME SOUTHERN CONFERENCE<lb />PLAYER OF THE WEEK.<lb /><lb />A complete football player and definite All-America candi-<lb />date . . . othe best linebacker in North Carolina and one of<lb />the best I have ever seen? says head coach Pat Dye<lb /><lb />good size, excellent speed and instinctual hitting ability .<lb /><lb />the undisputed leader of the oWild Dogs? credited for<lb />93 unassisted tackles in 1973 . . . 94 assists, five intercept-<lb />ions, one caused interception, seven knocked down passes,<lb />five caused fumbles, one fumble recovery and three<lb />quarterback sacks returned one interception 85 yards<lb />for TD against Appalachian State . . . a surefire first round<lb />draft choice according to pro scouts . . . The<lb />Southern Conference champions had 703 plays run against<lb />them on defense in 11 games. Eleven opponents totaled<lb />2,917 yards, for a 265.2 yards-per-game average. In scoring<lb />defense, they yielded 21 touchdowns and 151 points for a<lb />13.7 points-per-game average. The rushing defense was the<lb />strongest for the Pirates: they yielded 1,406 yards via the<lb />ground on 446 plays, for an average of 127.8 yards-per-game.<lb /><lb />Returning lettermen that should challenge the 1973<lb />marks include Danny Kepley, Cary Godette, Buddy Lowery,<lb />Ken Moore, Butch Strawderman, Gary Niklason, Billy<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Defensively, the Pirate coaching staff feels that the o5-2?<lb />alignment gives the team the best chance of obtaianing its<lb />top objective, which is to stop the run.<lb /><lb />Almost every team the Pirates will face this year runs<lb />some sort of Wishbone or Split-Back Veer offense and the<lb />seven-man front is the best way to stop this.<lb /><lb />The Pirates are strong defensively, and the alignment<lb />should best serve to utilize their qualities to the fullest<lb />potential. The linebacking corps includes five seniors in All-<lb />America candidate Danny Kepley, Butch Strawderman,<lb />Gary Niklason, Billy Hibbs and Nelson Strother. All are<lb />strong, quick, and can help the team stop the run and partici-<lb />pate in pass coverage.<lb /><lb />The down linemen include seniors Kenny Moore, Cary<lb />Godette and Buddy Lowery. Jim Bolding, an Honorable-<lb />Mention All-Southern Conference performer in 1973 as a<lb />freshman, returns at safety.<lb /><lb />In short, the type of people listed for the PiratesT defense<lb />in 1974 are types a coaching staff looks for when running the<lb />2.<lb /><lb />A combination of strength, speed and agility is needed to<lb />run the o5-2?. The defense is in a position to stop the theory<lb />involved behind the triple-option play that is a vital part of<lb />the Wishbone or Split-Back Veer. When the personnel in-<lb />volved on defense do their jobs correctly, the offensive<lb />cheory of tying up inside people can be nullified.<lb /><lb />The o5-2? defensive alignment looks like this:<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />ee<lb /><lb />_<lb /><lb />SSS<lb /><lb />~~<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />i Se<lb /><lb />KEY: E -- end M -- oMike? linebacker<lb />T -- tackle C -- cornerback<lb />N -- noseguard S -- safety<lb />S -- oSam? linebacker _ SS -- strong safety<lb /><lb />The primary objective of the defense is to keep the<lb />opponent running game to an under three-yards-per-carry<lb />average. The secondary objective is to, with the excellent<lb />linebackers the Pirates are blessed with, help provide better<lb />pass coverage in the defensive secondary.<lb /><lb />The outlook for this year is greatly dependent on our<lb />players remaining healthy. They must also continue to play<lb />together as one unit with the same great enthusiasm and<lb />desire.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />aa ce ERAS Te I Bp eS BES<lb /><lb />DRI EBL IT ROR STS TTT<lb /><lb />SER ETATNIIRIS<lb /><lb /><lb /></p>

<lb />PIRATES<lb />ON<lb />OFFENSE<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />| GOALS AND LETTERMEN<lb /><lb />Nine lettermen are gone from the offensive unit that led<lb />the Southern Conference in total and scoring offense in<lb />1973. The 1973 Southern Conference champions ground out<lb />811 plays for 4,245 yards in 11 games, an average of 385.9<lb />yards per game. In scoring, the Pirates pushed across 47<lb />touchdowns and a total of 352 points. | :<lb /><lb />But while nine are lost, 18 return. They include Vic<lb />Wilfore, Benny Gibson, Mike Shea, Tim Hightower, Ken |<lb />Strayhorn, Don Schink, Tom Daub, Jim Woody and |<lb />Jonathan Deming. Top returning non-lettermen include |<lb />Ricky Bennett, Jake Dove, Randy Parrish, Mike Weaver,<lb />Jesse Ingram and Ray Jones.<lb /><lb />RI<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />oo<lb /><lb />The coaching staff feels that the offense the club utilizes 1 OQ Son aoe <lb />this season is the best it can be in with the personnel it has. # Zz<lb />This is due to the abundance of running backs and two good : VB.<lb />fullbacks in Don Schink and Tom Daub.<lb />The offense is good for the linemen for two reasons: oOo oO :<lb />ing eee ee ene cones From either formation, the quarterback has three |<lb />2. There is enough personnel at the wide receiver posit- options, as diagrammed and numbered as follows: |<lb />ion to make opponent defenses have to respect the outside |<lb />pass. :<lb />The Wishbone is a ball-controll offense. Speed and a<lb />power are essentials to moving the football. It is an 22<lb />unselfish offense in that everyone on the field is a blocker at 0<lb />some point during the game. Thus, at some time, everyone 5s<lb />has to block for each other. The Wishbone is an explosive<lb />offense, due to a wide range of options and a number of<lb /><lb />quick-hitting plays. @ Tf j Kw yy is<lb />Contrary to what many believe when oball-control Oo<lb /><lb />offense? is mentioned, the passing game is a good<lb /><lb />percentage of the offense. It is the consistency of the<lb /><lb />passing game that is dependent on the consistency of the<lb /><lb />running game, sure, but that dependability is magnified<lb /><lb />when it is realized that without either, the other is useless. O<lb />The Wishbone requires perfect execution from a stand-<lb /><lb />point of both the linemen and the backs. Due to this, a great<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />deal of practice time will be spent on basic wishbone plays. 1. <p>ew <lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />COACHING REPORT<lb />PRIOR TO<lb /><lb />THE CITADEL<lb />NOV. 2, 1974<lb /><lb />Dear Pirate Fan,<lb /><lb />I think it was evident Saturday night that our kids<lb />responded real well to what we did in practice last week. We<lb />had gone backwards both mentally and physically. We went<lb />back to the basics on offense and defense and everyone<lb />responded very well to this soul-searching.<lb /><lb />* *<lb /><lb />As a team, we are still badly crippled: Tim Hightower,<lb />Ricky Bennett, Bobby Myrick and Don Schink are all either<lb />hurt or sick. This had to have had something to do with our<lb />first-half ineffectiveness on offense.<lb /><lb />* *K *<lb /><lb />Defensively, we played without Buddy Lowery, Cary<lb />Godette and Steve Mulder. But we made a lot of progress in<lb />practice with some young kids, we shifted some people in the<lb />kicking game, and the whole thing worked out very well.<lb /><lb />* * *<lb /><lb />Our kicking team really gave us two TDTs. We had super<lb />coverage on kickoffs . . . and Dayton had to run back three<lb />for scores earlier in the season.<lb /><lb />* * *<lb /><lb />Our defense played with emotion and the recklessness<lb />they had in the Bowling Green game. That is reflected in<lb />what we made happen with turnovers.<lb /><lb />* *<lb /><lb />Coaches Grieb, Norris, Orgel and Ruckert did a great job<lb />in getting the defense prepared for Vosburg. The pass<lb />coverage were mixed up and it kept them off balance. We<lb />knew they weren't a good running team and tried to force<lb />them to run.<lb /><lb />* *K *<lb /><lb />Dayton gave us problems offensively in the first half with<lb />a 6-2 defense, something we weren't ready to face. But our<lb />first-half problems weren't a result of not trying in the first<lb />half . .. it was a matter of not executing properly.<lb /><lb />* * *<lb /><lb />As you can probably guess, we have got to do something<lb />with our passing game. We had three pass interceptions,<lb />which you canTt have and it is causing people to line up a<lb />10-man front with a single man on our splint end.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Today we play The Citadel, and Coach Ross will have his<lb />team ready to play. They must have a good team, because<lb />they have played close games against everybody.<lb /><lb />They have the second-leading rusher in the country and a<lb />quarterback that can run and pass their offense into the end-<lb />zone.<lb /><lb />* Kk OO<lb /><lb />Detensively, they run a multiple-defense type scheme<lb />which is basically the same as MarylandTs . Coach Ross<lb />was up there with Jerry Claiborne.<lb /><lb />* *<lb /><lb />Kenny Strayhorn played last week with a broken nose<lb />and two badly bruised shoulders. He hurt all week but<lb />missed no practice. He gave a super effort and has given us<lb />super leadership all season long and, for that, it was a good<lb />week.<lb /><lb />* * *<lb /><lb />Before we play our last home game of the season, I want<lb />to thank the many loyal Pirate Fans that have made our<lb />season, both here and on the road, enjoyable.<lb /><lb />We have a long way to go, still, if we are going to achieve<lb /><lb />~our number one goal: win the Southern Conference champ-<lb /><lb />ionship. TodayTs game is step one of the four remaining<lb />steps we have to take.<lb /><lb />I want to say thanks again and encourage your continued<lb />support this week and the following weeks while we are on<lb />the road.<lb /><lb />Sincerely,<lb /><lb />Pat Dye,<lb />Head Football Coach<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /></p>

<p>oITve Cried Many Times...<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />(A Peek In The Pirate Locker Room)<lb /><lb />East Carolina is honoring, along with nine others, Glenn<lb />Bass here today by inducting him into the newly-formed<lb />ECU Sports Hall of Fame.<lb /><lb />Bass, a former pro-football player with the Buffalo Bills<lb />of the old American Footbll League, was a Little All-Ameri-<lb />can in both football and baseball at East Carolina, and went<lb />on to fame with the Bills and, later, the Houston Oilers.<lb /><lb />The Pirates have another Bass connected with the 1974<lb />football team and, though you wonTt find his name on the<lb />roster, he is very much a part of the club. And, if not for a<lb />cruel twist of fate one August afternoon, he easily could be<lb />leading the Pirates through the goalposts and into todayTs<lb />battle with The Citadel.<lb /><lb />Addison Rudolph Bass came to East Carolina after<lb />graduation from high school in nearby Washington. He<lb />worked himself into a starting offensive tackle position as a<lb />freshman and was set for another fine season in 1972 when<lb />tragedy struck coming the last day of pre-season camp.<lb /><lb />oCarl Summerell was rolling out to pass and I had to<lb />reach-block the defensive end, so I was moving along,? Bass<lb />recalled. oThe pass was intercepted and I went for the ball.<lb /><lb />oI had my left foot planted and got popped . . . it tore<lb />everything in my knee and the pane career was finished,<lb />though I didnTt know it then.?<lb /><lb />After working to rehabilitate the knee, Bass was told<lb />that if he got hit again, he could lose the use of the knee<lb />altogether. But, undaunted, he continues to help the Pirates<lb />in his capacity as oequipment technician.?<lb /><lb />oAfter playing so long, sometimes is scorches me to be<lb />called ~ManagerT,? said Bass, who is the team manager. oBut<lb />the guys on the football team at the time . . . this yearTs<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Budweiser<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />JEFFREYS BEER &amp; WINE CO.<lb /><lb />GREENVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA<lb /><lb />Distributors of<lb /><lb />BUDWEISER<lb />MICHELOB<lb /><lb />BUSCH-BAVARIAN<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />~ ADDISON Bass<lb /><lb />seniors are the fellows that I started to school with here . . .<lb />are like brothers to me, so I donTt mind helping them out.?<lb /><lb />Bass said it is, from his standpoint, hard to stand on the<lb />sidelines without getting the impulse to rip a jersey off<lb />another playerTs back and join in the game. But in working<lb />with the team as he has, Bass still considers himself very<lb />lucky.<lb /><lb />oI know some ex- players that just canTt stand being on<lb />the sidelines,? said Bass. oCoach Randle asked me to help<lb />out after I got hurt and I wanted to stay around the team.<lb /><lb />oI just consider myself lucky to be around at all.?<lb /><lb />Bass has a schedule that would make lesser men weep,<lb />but his is also quick to point out that without the help of<lb />Doug Dickens, Jack Andrews and Lonnie Farmer (another<lb />former Pirate felled by a back injury), he couldnTt get the job<lb />done at all. The trio often makes practice preparations while<lb />Bass is attending late afternoon classes, for which Bass is<lb />thankful.<lb /><lb />After practice, Bass can often be found in the weight<lb />room, pursuing the other vigorous pursuit that isnTt found<lb />that often: good physical conditioning. Bass is a physical<lb />education major and will graduate this spring.<lb /><lb />TodayTs game with The Citadel is the last time the gradu-<lb />ating seniors will appear in Ficklen Stadium, and for Bass,<lb />who admists that todayTs game will probably be the toughest<lb />one ever.<lb /><lb />oTTve cried many times,? said Bass. oBut it will probably<lb />be worse this week than ever before.?<lb /><lb />The value of a man who, forced to give up his playing<lb />career, can and still wants to be a part of a team, can not be<lb />measured. Bass said he wants to go to graduate school and<lb />further his football education for a career in that area as<lb />well. He wants to get into coaching because, as he put it,<lb />oTl never get used to managing like this . . though I<lb />wouldn't trade it for anything less than a full set of pads.?<lb /><lb />The coaching staff that lands this Bass, the odistant<lb />cousin? of todayTs Hall of Fame honoree, will have made<lb />quite a catch.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /></p>

Andrew Johnson, a 5-10, 188-pound junior fullback, is<lb />the nationTs #2 rusher.<lb /><lb />It took Johnson more than half his sophomore season to<lb />make a contribution to the varsity, but he made up for lost<lb />time in a hurry. He made his first starting role a success<lb />against Furman in 1973 by sprinting 59 yards from scrim-<lb />mage for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. He<lb />carried 18 times for 172 yards that day and the rest has been<lb />history for the Bulldog speedster.<lb /><lb />oIT consider Andrew one of the best backs in the South,?<lb />assistant coach Jimmye Laycock said. oHe has good speed,<lb />but with the leg power, he can run like a 210-pounder.?<lb /><lb />* * *<lb /><lb />There has seldom been a name that fit a football player as<lb />well as the one belonging to The CitadelTs sophomore line-<lb />backer, Brian Ruff.<lb /><lb />oBrian is an unbelievable performer,? said Citadel assist-<lb />ant Charlie Rizzo. oFootball means so very much to him and<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />he has the talent to play the game. SEIGNIOUS II<lb /><lb />MEET THE<lb />BULLDOGS<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />RANDY JOHNSON<lb />Defensive End<lb /><lb />A Look at the Citadel<lb /><lb />The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, does<lb />not fit the pattern of other colleges or universities in the<lb />country, not even the pattern of other military schools.<lb /><lb />That The Citadel is unique is a fact one is impressed with<lb />when he comes on campus for the first time, when he attends<lb />an athletic event with the Corps of Cadets present, or when<lb />he meets a cadet, faculty member or alumnus.<lb /><lb />The CitadelTs individuality can be traced through its long,<lb />proud heritage that holds its roots in the 1842 founding of<lb />the school. An act of the South Carolna legislature Dec. 20,<lb />1842 created The Citadel, an action reflecting the attitude of<lb />the leaders of the state than an academy was needed to<lb />provide a military education for the youth of the state.<lb /><lb />In return for their education, the students guarded large<lb />tobacco warehouses for the state. With the advent of the<lb />War Between the States, Citadel cadets were made a part of<lb />the state militia by legislative action in January, 1861.<lb /><lb />After the war, the school was necessarily closed and<lb />occupied by Federal troops. It remained closed until Oct. 2,<lb />1882 when 185 cadets were enrolled. Although the cadets<lb />had no more warehouses to guard, the school resumed its<lb />operation as a military system. The re-opening culminated<lb />efforts begun in 1877 by alumni for that purpose. Governor<lb />Wade Hampton, at the request of alumni, appointed a Board<lb />of Visitors for the school in 1878, and in January, 1882 the<lb />legislature re-established the college and appropriated funds<lb />for repairs and maintenance to the physical plant.<lb /><lb />In September, 1922, yielding to the pressures of an<lb />expanding Corps of Cadets, The Citadel moved its opera-<lb />tions from the original location on Marion Square in<lb />downtown Charleston to its current picturesque location<lb />between Hampton Park and the Ashley River.<lb /><lb />Although tradition runs strong throughout the school,<lb />The Citadel has modified itself to conform to some extent to<lb />offer education to more than resident cadets. After World<lb />War II The Citadel opened its doors to veteran students.<lb />Soon after veterans were accepted, the school began<lb />admitting women to summer sessions in 1950, the Evening<lb />Program in 1966 and the Graduate Program in 1968. How-<lb />ever, the primary strength of the school lies in the 1,700-man<lb />cadet corps.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /></p>

Dye said then. And, it became<lb />quite obvious during the second half that the Pirates had a<lb />halfback who indeed wanted to win, and win very badly.<lb /><lb />oKenny went out tonight and tried to win a game by him-<lb />self,? said Dye, after watching, along with 14,675 fans the<lb />Trenton, N.C., native explode four touchdowns in the Pirate<lb />romp. ;<lb /><lb />oIt was a great performance by a great athlete and a<lb />great leader,? Dye continued. oHe gave us something we<lb />needed.?<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />CruisinT Kenny Strayhorn tucked the ball under and sped<lb />away in the PiratesT contest with ASU... and it was only a<lb />taste of things to come.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />* *<lb /><lb />Strayhorn scored on runs of one, three, four and 10 yards<lb />to push himself on top in the teamTs individual scoring race<lb />(44 points). The ~Horn also blew by the Dayton defenders<lb />for 103 yards rushing in 18 carries. He tops the club this<lb /><lb />season with 463 yards rushing in 65 carries, for a 7.1 yards- .<lb /><lb />per-carry average.<lb /><lb />In another record-breaking note, SaturdayTs scores<lb />moves Strayhorn into sixth place in East CarolinaTs all-time<lb />scoring history. His 98 points pushed him ahead of seventh-<lb />place teammate Jim Woody.<lb /><lb />* * &amp;<lb /><lb />With the outcome of the game safely sealed away,<lb />another set of heroics was turned in by linebacker Butch<lb />Strawderman.<lb /><lb />The 6-3, 225-pound senior from Harrisonburg, Va.,<lb />snatched a last-second Tom Vosburg (Dayton quarterback)<lb />pass and, as the scoreboard horn blared the end of the game,<lb />raced 54 yards for the PiratesT final touchdown.<lb /><lb />After the field was cleared of joyous Pirate players,<lb /><lb />coaches and fans, reserve quarterback Bob Bailey lofted the<lb /><lb />conversion pass to Don Schink, and the Pirates went to the<lb />dressing room as victors once again.<lb /><lb />* * *<lb /><lb />Though the outcome certainly lessened the hurt, playing<lb />against Dayton was a painful experience for many Pirates.<lb />As is the case when mid-season rolls around, injuries have<lb />begun to crop up in alarming numbers.<lb /><lb />The Pirates had, from the results of the wear and tear of<lb />the grinding schedule, injuries to the entire starting<lb />offensive backfield, three offensive linemen, and six<lb />defensive players, as well as the people who are lost for<lb />virtually the entire season.<lb /><lb />Tim Hightower, the PiratesT starting center of recent<lb />weeks, has missed two games due to a detached retina.<lb />Thomas Slade, a fleet-footed return specialist-wide receiver<lb />from Edenton, is out indefinitely with broken vertebr.<lb /><lb />* *<lb /><lb />Today the Pirates are on Part III of their journey to the<lb />Southern Conference title and with Homecoming T74 being in<lb />the air, you can bet the team will be fired up to meet the<lb />Bulldogs.<lb /><lb />* k<lb />This is the last home game of the 1974 season, and the<lb /><lb />Pirates would like to thank the loyal fans that have made<lb />their home schedule a success again this year.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /></p>

Five teams playing .500 ball or better in the<lb />league? What is this, baseball's National League South?<lb /><lb />Hardly. In last weekTs Southern Conference football<lb />action, front-running Virginia Military Institute rolled over<lb />William &amp; Mary, 31-20, to keep its stranglehold on first<lb />place.<lb /><lb />* * *<lb /><lb />The logjam crops up in the battle for the bridesmaidTs<lb />spot, second place. Appalachian State, with a 2-1 mark, was<lb />clipped by The Citadel at Charleston, S.C., 28-17.<lb /><lb />EAST CAROLINA shares third place with Richmond<lb />and Furman, but after viewing the wreckage made of the<lb />Dayton Flyers Saturday (34-6, ECU), third place will do at<lb />least until after this game with the Bulldogs.<lb /><lb />* * *<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Richmond fell to Virginia Tech, 41-7, and Furman<lb />rebounded from two straight losses by stopping Wofford,<lb />21-10, in the other non-conference games.<lb /><lb />* * *<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Since this is the last home game of 1974 for the Pirates<lb />and the title will have to be won in Virginia, whoever the<lb />victor may eventually be, it may be helpful to keep these bits<lb />of speculatory information in mind:<lb /><lb />... After todayTs game, the Pirates travel to Richmond,<lb />William &amp; Mary and VMI, in that order. They know they<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />... WMI plays its next-to-last conference game today at<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Richmond, and if the Pirates are to get an outright shot at<lb />the title, Richmond is going to have to come up with a whale<lb />of a game to stop the thundering keydets.<lb /><lb />... ASU hosts Furman today, and in two weeks visits<lb />the Spiders in Richmond. The Paladins, though virtually out<lb />of the race, could be the spoilers in that one.<lb /><lb />...For the sake of the Pirates, hopefully, the conference<lb />championship could be decided when the Bucs go to VMI<lb />later this month. The Pirates would have to beat VMI for a<lb />tie for the title, so a loss to Richmond by the Keydets<lb />wouldnTt hurt one bit.<lb /><lb />* OK OK<lb /><lb />In keeping with the prognostication game, it can safely<lb />be said that no one knows what will happen in the next<lb />weeks of conference play .. . just as no one even guessed<lb />VMI would come up with a league-leading team, either.<lb /><lb />But thatTs football!!!<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />TODAYTS S.C. ACTION<lb /><lb />The Citadel at EAST CAROLINA<lb />VMI at Richmond<lb />Furman at ASU<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />must win all of these games to have a chance for the title.
