On Nov. 18, Dean<lb />Alan R. White appointed Dr.<lb />John Given as director of the pro-<lb />gram, replacing Professor John<lb />Stevens, who served as director<lb />for the previous five years.<lb /><lb />Stevens will return to his teach-<lb />ing and research at ECU, teaching<lb />a new course he developed on the<lb />power of images in the ancient<lb /><lb />*<lb /><lb />Richard Folsom and wife Jan.<lb /><lb />ECU grad writes<lb /><lb />world and working on a book<lb />about the epic poem Aeneid? by<lb />the Roman poet Vergil.<lb /><lb />Professor Stevens has been<lb />an outstanding leader for the<lb />program, someone who has had<lb />big ideas and has known how to<lb />accomplish them,? says Given.<lb />It is a daunting task to follow<lb />him but a challenge I am excited<lb />to face.? ;<lb /><lb />During the past seven years,<lb />Given has taught as an assis-<lb />tant professor of classics in the<lb />Department of Foreign Lan-<lb />guages and Literatures. <lb />A2<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN * NEWS<lb /><lb />THURSDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2008<lb /><lb />FOLSOM continued from Al<lb /><lb />Carolina coast, never to be<lb />heard from again, or so many<lb />thought. According to oral tradi-<lb />tion passed down over hundreds:<lb />of-years, the Lumbee Indians<lb />of. North Carolina took these<lb />English colonists in, where they<lb />eventually intermarried and<lb />integrated into the culture of the<lb />Lumbee. According to historical<lb />documents, passers-by on the<lb />Neuse River saw a wild and<lb />unruly? bunch that included fair-<lb />skinned whites who spoke the<lb />Queens English.? Although<lb />these claims have never been<lb />formally substantiated, the<lb /><lb />Lumbee Indians still consider<lb />this part of their history.<lb /><lb />This is where Folsoms<lb />story begins. Folsoms novel<lb />begins with two local news-<lb />paper reporters covering a Ku<lb />Klux Klan cross-burning in<lb />rural North Carolina "a cross-<lb />burning incited by the Lumbee<lb />Indians belief that their ances-<lb />tors were both Native Americans<lb />and English colonists. One of<lb />the reporters writes an award-<lb />winning article of what happens<lb />that night when shots fired by<lb />the Lumbee scare the KKK<lb />members into the night.<lb /><lb />ECU receives nod to<lb />install cardiac CT scanner<lb /><lb />3 ECU NEWS SERVICES<lb /><lb />- State officials have approved<lb />a plan by ECU to buy and install<lb />a CT scanner that will allow for<lb />precise diagnosis of coronary<lb />artery disease.<lb /><lb />. The advanced computed<lb />tomography scanner will be<lb />housed at the East Carolina<lb />Heart Institute at ECU. The state<lb />Division of Facility Services<lb />approved ECUs certificate of<lb />need application in late Novem-<lb />ber.<lb /><lb />. The scanner will enable ECU<lb />to further its capabilities to diag-<lb />nose and plan for appropriate<lb />management of cardiovascular<lb />disease in one location. The most<lb />advanced ~cardiovascular CT<lb />scanner in eastern North Caro-<lb />lina, its precise images will allow<lb />doctors to diagnose blockages in<lb />arteries without catheterization,<lb />an invasive procedure in which<lb />a tiny tube is threaded through<lb />an artery to give doctors images<lb />of blockages.<lb /><lb />In North Carolina, cardio-<lb />vascular disease is responsible<lb />for nearly a third of all deaths.<lb />The percentage of deaths attrib-<lb />utable to cardiovascular disease<lb />in eastern North Carolina is 23<lb />percent higher than in the rest of<lb />the state.<lb /><lb />AS new scanners with better<lb />imaging capabilities have become<lb />available, non-invasive imaging<lb />techniques such as CT angiogra-<lb /><lb />phy have substantially replaced<lb />catheterization, which carries<lb />some risk and costs several thou-<lb />sand dollars.<lb /><lb />Coronary CT angiography<lb />determines whether fatty or<lb />calcium deposits have built up<lb />in cardiac arteries, which supply<lb />blood to the heart muscle. In<lb />patients who have symptoms<lb />that could indicate heart disease<lb />or impending heart attack but<lb />no other significant risk fac-<lb />tors, CT angiography rules out<lb />coronary heart disease with 99<lb />percent accuracy. A procedure<lb />typically costs between $1,000<lb />and $1,500.<lb /><lb />You would eliminate the<lb />risk and you would cut the cost?<lb />compared to catheterization, said<lb />Dr. Assad Movahed, professor<lb />of cardiovascular sciences at<lb />ECU and medical director of the<lb />coronary CT program.<lb /><lb />ECUs machine will be a<lb />Siemens SOMATOM Definition<lb />dual-source scanner with added<lb />features. for heart diagnoses.<lb />Renovations for the unit should<lb />be completed by the end of April<lb />and the unit installed in early<lb />May. The scanner should see its<lb />first patients in mid-May.<lb /><lb />ECU - projects performing<lb />nearly 800 scans in fiscal year<lb />2010 and increasing to more than<lb />4,000 by fiscal year 2012.<lb /><lb />Doctors and scientists will<lb />also use the device in research<lb />and clinical trials.<lb /><lb />Enter Carl Bowden, an ECU<lb />professor and avid North Caro-<lb />lina history buff. Bowdens goal:<lb />to prove that the Lumbees and<lb /><lb />_the Lost Colonists are linked.<lb /><lb />He almost does it, when he and<lb />an ECU librarian are shot and<lb />killed on campus. The newspaper<lb />reporter who covered the cross<lb />burning helps in the investigation<lb /><lb />of Bowdens murder"a personal .<lb /><lb />task as he and Bowden were<lb />friends for 40 years.<lb /><lb />Although 95 percent of the<lb />facts are historically accurate,<lb />Folsom says that he massaged?<lb />about five percent so they would<lb /><lb />fit the story line.<lb /><lb />Because of its local setting<lb />and history, Folsom believes<lb />that his novel is one that ECU<lb />students will enjoy.<lb /><lb />Students often dont have a<lb />lot of extra time to read, but when<lb />on break from school, I believe<lb />they would enjoy a good murder<lb />mystery, especially if it involves<lb />an ECU professor,? he said. And<lb />for anyone who enjoys good<lb />historical fiction, involving the<lb />Lost Colony, I feel it would be an<lb />enjoyable and informative read,?<lb /><lb />Indian Wood is Folsoms<lb />second novel, along with other<lb /><lb />project ideas, but besides writing,<lb /><lb />he and his wife Jan own a res-<lb />taurant in Greenville, Harveys.<lb />Folsom admits that Jan now does<lb />most of the work at Harveys<lb />while he spends most of his time<lb />researching and writing.<lb /><lb />And there is little money in<lb />it, at least not in the short-term,<lb />so you had better have someone<lb />who loves you and is willing to<lb />support you,? he says.<lb /><lb />Writing is a long, unrequited<lb /><lb />love affair. If you are not com-<lb /><lb />mitted to the process, day after<lb />day of writing the equivalent of<lb />short term papers, then you had<lb /><lb />better look for something else<lb />to do. There is no one to moti-<lb />vate you, but yourself,? Folsom<lb />explained.<lb /><lb />Folsom grew up in Fayette-<lb />ville, N.C. and has two children:<lb />Brett and Noah. The much worse news is<lb />Treasurys response that it does<lb />not even have the intention of<lb />doing so.?<lb /><lb />The GAO is one of three<lb />watchdogs that Congress has<lb />assigned to monitor the extraor-<lb />dinary $700 billion financial<lb />rescue package, known as the<lb />Troubled Asset Relief Program,<lb />or TARP. A congressional over-<lb />sight panel is scheduled to issue<lb />its report on Dec. 10.<lb /><lb />In addition, Congress created<lb />an inspector generals office to<lb />oversee the program, but the con-<lb />firmation of veteran federal pros-<lb />ecutor Neil M. Barofsky to the post<lb />has been blocked in the Senate by<lb />a senator who remains anonymous<lb />under Senate practice.<lb /><lb />THE ASSOCIATED PRESS<lb /><lb />This report proves the<lb />immediate need for oversight<lb />of the taxpayer dollars being<lb />expended right now as part of<lb />TARP,? Senate Finance Com-<lb />mittee Chairman Max -:Baucus,<lb />D-Mont., said in a statement.<lb />Because of one senators anony-<lb />mous block on this nomination,<lb />three weeks have been lost " a<lb />key element of the TARP over-<lb />sight program is not in place.?<lb /><lb />Republican Sen. Jim Bun-<lb />ning of Kentucky, a member of<lb />the Senate Banking Committee<lb />who opposed the bailout bill, has<lb />said he had serious concerns?<lb />with Barofskys nomination,<lb />though he has praised his experi-<lb />ence. <lb />Opinion .<lb /><lb />Who deserves<lb />more mula?<lb /><lb />ECU should reconsider the areas<lb />where they distribute funds<lb /><lb />LAUREN COLLINS<lb />THE EAst CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />The university seems to have a number of things<lb />that need to be taken care of or adjusted in terms<lb />of funding. Recently I discovered that Skip Holtzs<lb /><lb />salary is $565,000 for this years season, and ECU has -<lb /><lb />locked him into a six-year contract that is expected<lb />to total a whopping $9.5 million. Although a large<lb />contribution to this salary comes from Pirate Club<lb />donations, ticket sales and sponsored events that Holtz<lb />participates in, his coaching has minimal reflection on<lb />student academics, which should be a higher priority<lb />than athletics. ;<lb /><lb />The ECU Board of Trustees also approved a<lb />$32,400 raise for athletic director Terry Holland,<lb />bumping his salary to $356,400. Ironically, the pro-<lb />fessors, who work hard to prepare students for their<lb />future careers, average salaries of about $74,000.<lb />Aside from the obvious whoa-factor involved with<lb />the drastic difference in salaries, there are concerns<lb />on campus as well.<lb /><lb />Because funding is minimal, there is a strict 30-<lb /><lb />page limit on printing in the Student Writing Centers<lb />computer lab. The signs are plastered for all to see, yet<lb />when students print their materials, a nice big blob of<lb />splotchy black covers the pages. I was informed that<lb /><lb />the Writing Center does not receive enough funding "<lb /><lb />to provide a new printer for the number of students<lb />that walk in each day. Perhaps the percentage of ticket<lb />sales that Skip Holtz receives could be allocated to<lb />student needs instead.<lb /><lb />Professors and instructors are starting to email<lb />their .pdf? files to students because they are limited<lb />on copies. It. doesnt do much good for students who<lb />have limited computer access. If they go to the Student<lb />Writing Center, theyre wading through ink stains<lb />or inconveniently forced to get to the labs that often<lb />close before their posted times. It seems beneficial<lb />that funding needs that directly affect students should<lb />be atop priority. .<lb /><lb />During the 2006-2007 fiscal year, only 13 Porch<lb />of funding went to supplies and materials. Approxi-<lb />mately 14 percent was directed to services, but the<lb />combination only totaled: about $187,000. Judging<lb />by existing problems, its safe to assume that funding<lb />has either stayed the same or decreased since 2007.<lb />Ironically, student tuition and fees has increased to<lb />$4,218 for in-state students and $14,732 for out-of-<lb />state undergraduates. Graduate students are expected<lb />to pay about $400 more. With an increasing amount of<lb />students entering ECU, it seems simple that the total<lb />tuition and fee amounts received could be delegated<lb />much more appropriately.<lb /><lb />I discussed the coachs salary with a football<lb /><lb />player, and he seemed to share little concern about '<lb /><lb />Holtzs astounding pay. He informed me that many of<lb />the guys playing football are currently working with<lb />full-ride scholarships including tuition, books and<lb />housing. Im sure if I could receive the all-expenses-<lb />paid package to ECU for playing a game, I wouldnt<lb />be so shocked and appalled by the football coachs<lb />outrageous salary either. In the players defense, they<lb />do train for almost the entire year, and their. athletic<lb />ability has allowed them to have their scholarship<lb />privileges, but what about the average Joes that walk<lb />the campus each day? :<lb /><lb />All my life, it has been reiterated that grades are<lb />importarit and academic success will determine your<lb />future success. It has come to my attention now that<lb />the university may seem to care more about the rising<lb />status of our sports teams than the academic perfor-<lb />mance of our students. I will give some credit to Skip<lb />Holtz, who implemented a study hall for the players,<lb />~but his coaching only affects a small fraction of the<lb />thousands of students attending ECU, so perhaps ECU<lb />should reconsider the allocation of so much money<lb />to their football coach and spread it more evenly to<lb />other areas as well.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Five ideas fora<lb />great holiday<lb /><lb />JASON M. WALLACE<lb /><lb />THE EAst CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />1. Go crazy with Christmas lights. If Halloween<lb />is the only day of the year to wear a costume and look<lb />normal, then Christmas should be the time to deck out<lb />everything in little, colored lights. This one is great<lb />for those who dont even celebrate Christmas and<lb />have money to spend on the electric bill. If you can<lb />cover your house in lights and find a way to cover<lb />your car with lights while wearing clothing made out<lb />of lights, you win.<lb /><lb />2. Promptly put the lights away. After New Years,<lb /><lb />no one Cares. :<lb /><lb />3. Come up with new ideas for Christmas movies.<lb /><lb />This one is addressed to those who plan to be, or<lb />already are, writers for television. I dont think I can<lb />sit though another family-safe movie where the plot<lb />révolves around creating the perfect Christmas. Most<lb />of the time, there is a build up to perfection, and then<lb />the main character manages to fowl up everything.<lb />This is usually followed by a line, there goes Christ-<lb />mas.? Either avoid the Hallmark Channel or make a<lb /><lb />_ Christmas story that has a mystery detective or action<lb />theme to it, please.<lb /><lb />4. Dress up as Santa. Feel empowered. You'll ,<lb /><lb />be recognized by all as you walk around town and<lb />into shopping centers. Try to outdo the malls Santa.<lb />If this means gaining weight and growing a beard,<lb />go for it.<lb /><lb />5. Time to run<lb />around in a panic trying to find the perfect gift<lb />for your best friend. Time to cut your fingers all<lb />to heck on wrapping paper and bows. Time to<lb />stress out over the amount of debt put on your<lb />credit cards. Time to buy your significant other<lb />a puppy?<lb /><lb />The gigantic Marley and Me advertisements<lb /><lb />4 popping up in movie theaters, a larger than life<lb /><lb />Labrador Retriever wearing a red bow indicating<lb />Christmas gift status, reminded me of a problem<lb />I dealt with a lot working in animal shelters back<lb />in high school"abandoned pets. It might seem<lb />like a gigantic leap of logic to go from adorable<lb />puppy present? to sad abandoned dog,? but it<lb />really isnt.<lb /><lb />My shelter, like many others, allowed people<lb />who couldnt, or didnt want to take care of their<lb />pets, to drop them off with us: This type of policy<lb />is implemented for people who find themselves<lb />unable to financially support a pet anymore,<lb />but what we saw most often were people who<lb />just didnt want their pets anymore. Surrenders<lb />ranged from cat owners sick of scratched sofas,<lb />disinterested children getting rid of their rab-<lb />bits and parents dropping off the family dog<lb />once Junior had gone off to college. Our front ©<lb />doors became a depressing show of how short<lb />forever? can be when kids promise to love an<lb />animal that long.<lb /><lb />Its this type of disinterest that makes buying<lb />a pet as a present so dangerous. Sure, it may seem<lb />like a sweet idea to get your girlfriend a puppy<lb />for Christmas, but do you even know if she can<lb />take care of one? Feeding, walking, vet bills,<lb />insurance, basic grooming "these expenses all<lb />add up, especially for the average college student.<lb />That isnt even including pet deposits, limited<lb />apartment options and the price of a pet sitter<lb />when you want to take a vacation.<lb /><lb />If that isnt dissuading enough, when talking<lb />with one of the workers at a shelter in town, I<lb />learned that one of the major rescues the shelter<lb />often does involve saving abandoned dogs and<lb /><lb />- cats from homes when students go on vacation.<lb /><lb />I even learned that one girl had left a bag of food<lb />open in her kitchen, locked the door and left for<lb />two weeks, I guess assuming the dog could call<lb />911 if a fire erupted and it needed a way out. I<lb />also found out that many students along the Tar<lb />River had abandoned their pets during the heavy<lb />flooding, forcing volunteers to break into homes<lb />to save dogs and cats from drowning.<lb /><lb />I dont think most people that adopt pets in<lb />college are anything like these térrible examples,<lb />but I cant help but worry when talking with<lb />people planning to give animals as~a gift. While<lb />the reaction after presenting someone with a<lb />puppy certainly seems like a great way to earn<lb />brownie points, its important to keep in mind<lb />how permanent that little critter will be.<lb /><lb />So, if youre thinking about buying a pet for<lb />someone thinking they Il be different,? just ask<lb />yourself something " if that person couldnt take<lb />care of the animal anymore, would you take it?<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb /> opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />READ,<lb />RANT,<lb /><lb />SHARE.<lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />Elise Phillips<lb />Editor in Chief<lb /><lb />Andrea Robertson<lb />- Opinion Editor -<lb /><lb />Natalie Jurgen<lb />News Editor<lb /><lb />Jared Jackson<lb />Asst. <lb />Ba<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ SPORTS<lb /><lb />THURSDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2008<lb /><lb />RONNIE WOODWARD<lb />Tue East CAROLINA |<lb /><lb />As exciting and memorable as<lb />ECUs upset-laden beginning to<lb />the 2008 regular season was, the<lb />finish deserves the most applause.<lb />Pulling off a couple of upsets and<lb />even going undefeated during<lb />one season can give a program<lb />short-term credibility, but thats<lb />not what ECU coach Skip Holtz<lb />wants. Holtz has always had the<lb />big picture in mind when it comes<lb />to coaching, stressing to his play-<lb />ers not to get too high with the big<lb />wins and not to get too low with<lb />the losses.<lb /><lb />This season showed that<lb />Holtz understands what it takes<lb />to build a football program, and<lb />the Pirates 5-1 finish to the regu-<lb />lar season and berth in Saturdays<lb />Conference USA championship<lb />game is just the latest step in<lb />that process.<lb /><lb />During Holtzs first season in<lb />Greenville (2005), the goal was to<lb />gain respect from the opponents<lb />the Pirates faced each Saturday,<lb />and they did. The 2006 season<lb />was all about making it to a bowl<lb />game, which ECU did. Last sea-<lb />sons goal was not only to make<lb />it to a bowl game, but also to win<lb />one. ECU did that, defeating non-<lb /><lb />BCS power Boise State, 41-38, in :<lb /><lb />the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl.<lb /><lb />But after failing to reach the<lb />C-USA title game in 2006 and<lb />2007, this years goal was very<lb />clear: Make the C-USA champi-<lb />onship game. Despite all the on-<lb />field and off-field distractions the<lb />Pirates encountered this season,<lb />they will appear in the programs<lb />first-ever C-USA title game this<lb />Saturday against Tulsa.<lb /><lb />But in typical Holtz fashion,<lb />the Pirates fourth-year coach<lb />refuses to take credit for this<lb />years accomplishment.<lb /><lb />T think it speaks volumes for<lb />these players and their attitude<lb />and drive,? he said on Monday.<lb />They set out what they wanted<lb />at the beginning of the year and<lb />they werent going to let any-<lb />thing get in their way.?<lb /><lb />After bolting out of the gate<lb />this season with wins over Vir-<lb />ginia Tech and West Virginia,<lb />and gaining a No. 15 national<lb />ranking, making the C-USA<lb />title game seemed like a for-<lb />gone conclusion. That quickly<lb />changed however, as the Pirates<lb /><lb />lost three straight games and |<lb /><lb />were out of the national spot-<lb />light with a 3-3 record in early<lb />October. It wouldve been easy<lb />for ECU to quit at that point, as<lb />Holtz admitted on Monday that<lb />dissension was present among<lb />the Pirates players during that<lb /><lb />~October stretch.<lb /><lb />On top of the internal prob-<lb />lems, ECU began to lose players<lb />to injuries and suspensions on<lb />a regular basis. The ECU team<lb />that finished the regular season<lb />looked far different from the<lb />one that beat Virginia Tech. The<lb />group that dominated UTEP in<lb />last. weekends regular season<lb />finale was without its two best<lb />defensive players, top-three wide<lb />receivers, best offensive lineman,<lb />two best cornerbacks and most<lb />talented running back. |<lb /><lb />Despite depleted ranks, Holtz<lb />got his Pirates into the C-USA<lb />title: game"which speaks vol-<lb />umes for his ability to get the<lb />most out of his players.<lb /><lb />T think Im more proud<lb />of this football team for what<lb />theyve accomplished and the<lb />adversity that they have gone<lb /><lb />through than I would be if we<lb /><lb />had stayed healthy and gone<lb />undefeated,? Holtz said after the<lb />UTEP game.<lb /><lb />Unfortunately for ECU, this<lb />weekends title game looks eerily<lb />similar to the 2006 Papajohns.<lb />com Bowl. Just like South Florida<lb />was in that game, Tulsa appears<lb />more suited to win this weekends<lb />contest and the Pirates chance of<lb />an upset appear slim.<lb /><lb />So if ECU loses Saturday,<lb />will Holtz be around for ECUs<lb />first C-USA title?<lb /><lb />With him being a top can-<lb />didate for the Syracuse job and<lb />Charlie Weis long-term future<lb />with Notre Dame uncertain,<lb />Holtzs departure might happen<lb />sooner rather than later. With<lb />his kids at ages 14, 12 and 10, it<lb />would probably make sense for<lb />him to move on to a BCS confer-<lb />ence sometime soon.<lb /><lb />History has shown that<lb /><lb />-Holtzs current program can<lb /><lb />continue to grow even after his<lb />departure, however. After Holtz<lb />sparked unprecedented success<lb />with UConn in the mid-1990s,<lb />the Huskies continued to flourish<lb />after his exit and are currently<lb />one of the top programs in the Big<lb />East. Holtz has created a winning<lb />atmosphere in Greenville just<lb />like he did in Storrs, Conn., and if<lb />he does leave, ECUs next coach<lb />should be able to build on what<lb />Holtz has already done.<lb /><lb />Prior to last years Hawaii<lb />Bowl with Boise State, Holtz<lb />said that the level of the Broncos<lb />program is where ECU is striving<lb />to be. The Pirates appear to be<lb />headed in that direction because<lb />of one mans ability to lay the<lb />foundation"one step at a time.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />ECU student with interest writing at<lb />a ial-m "t-1-) a @r-l ae} iialt-la)<lb /><lb />Full or Part-time ECU student<lb />Vi tialiaaleiaa me) may tom Cl-7-Wa-lellllg-ye.<lb />I Ko} aj ol Led hilem com lal\maat-l(e)g<lb /><lb />Drink Specials<lb /><lb />MON $5 house margaritas<lb />TUE $2.50 draft<lb /><lb />WED $2 off specialty martinis<lb />THURS $3.50 house wines<lb /><lb />MON - SAT 5-10PM<lb />By Tatiale macerey in)<lb />Sushi Bar<lb />OF oles ar-11 im mel bj ale (=)<lb /><lb />M-F 11 AM - 2PM<lb />Daily Lunch Specials<lb /><lb />P-Ncolelaremcal=mere) salle inelaem =i 'hl i)<lb /><lb />| Free apetizer<lb />- with purchase of 2 entrees<lb /><lb />after 8:30 with student ID<lb />MON - THURS<lb /><lb />FOR RESERVATIONS AND TAKE OUT:<lb />252.493.0510<lb />www.wasabi88bistro.com<lb />Full service available in all areas<lb />www.wasabi88bistro@hotmail.com<lb /><lb />Ready for Independent Living?<lb />Check Out<lb /><lb />iver catia willecant<lb />252-756-6209<lb />Wainright Property Mgnt.<lb /><lb />Lunch and Dinner<lb /><lb />DALES<lb />INDIAN<lb /><lb />CUISINE|<lb /><lb />Se<lb /><lb />DalesIndianCuisine.net<lb /><lb />Open 7 days a week for<lb /><lb />Lunch Buffet<lb />11:30 " 2:30 PM<lb />Dinner<lb />5:00 " 10:00 PM<lb />Sat &amp; Sun Brunch<lb />12:00 " 2:30 PM<lb /><lb />Student Special<lb />Vegetarian Platter Meal $10<lb />Non Vegetarian Platter Meal $ 12<lb />With Pirate ID<lb />Sun, Mon, and Tues<lb /><lb />or<lb />15 % discount with this ad.<lb /><lb />cannot be used with lunch buffet<lb /><lb />419 Evans Street _<lb />Greenville, NC 27834<lb />Phone: 252.551.3253<lb /><lb />We cater all occasions,<lb />big or small<lb />We Now Serve Halal Meat |<lb /><lb />DAPPERDAN'S<lb /><lb />Retro &amp; Vintage<lb /><lb />Clothing @ Jewelry<lb />Antiques ¢ Collectibles<lb /><lb />Buy 4 Sell ?,? The Dean E.<lb /><lb />Smith Center"or the Dean,<lb /><lb />Dome,? as it is better known"<lb />and Cameron Indoor Stadium<lb />are synonymous with college<lb />basketball.<lb /><lb />On ECUs campus, Minges<lb /><lb />"Coliseum is known for being the<lb /><lb />place where you took the swim<lb />test freshman year.<lb /><lb />In a state mad for college<lb />hoops, it seems the basketball<lb />gods have overlooked ECU when<lb />it comes to success.<lb /><lb />OK, Duke and UNC boast<lb />two of the top basketball pro-<lb />grams in the entire country. And<lb />they call it the Big Four? for<lb />a reason. N.C. State and Wake<lb />Forest have had their share of<lb /><lb />success as well. These would be<lb /><lb />unfair comparisons.<lb /><lb />However, even less note-<lb />worthy schools like Charlotte,<lb />Davidson and UNC- Wilmington<lb />have had moments in the sun.<lb /><lb />In the last 12 seasons, Char-<lb />lotte has made seven trips to the<lb />NCAA tournament. Davidsons<lb />basketball history can be traced<lb />back to the 1960s"but recently<lb />Stephen Currys Wildcats have<lb />become the talk of the nation<lb /><lb />after last seasons Elite Eight<lb /><lb />appearance. UNCW has made<lb />four trips to the Big Dance since<lb />2000.<lb /><lb />So where does ECU fit into<lb />the mix? The Pirates havent<lb />madean NCAA tournament<lb />since 1993 and the only previous<lb />appearance came in 1972.<lb /><lb />Part of the problem for<lb /><lb />-Minges Coliseum has always<lb /><lb />t<lb /><lb />THURSDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2008<lb /><lb />been its position in the shadows<lb />of Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.<lb /><lb />People think about football<lb />when they think about ECU<lb />athletics"not basketball.<lb /><lb />Like most in-state play-<lb />ers, senior guard Sam Hinnant<lb />dreamed of playing for Duke,<lb />N.C. State or UNC while grow-<lb />ing up in Charlotte. The notoriety<lb />of Pirate basketball has yet to<lb />reach every corner of the state.<lb /><lb />Coming up, I always heard<lb />about ECU being a football<lb />school,? said Hinnant. Its<lb />always been known as:a football<lb /><lb />. school and to this day it is. That<lb /><lb />was the only thing I ever heard<lb />about it.?<lb /><lb />But coach Mack McCarthy<lb />is well on his way to changing<lb />the climate surrounding bas-<lb /><lb />ketball at ECU. The seasoned:<lb /><lb />coach began stripping down the<lb />entire program piece by piece<lb />last season.<lb /><lb />Everything about the pro-<lb /><lb />gram needed to change,? he said.<lb />The public relations issues, .<lb /><lb />promotions, marketing, academ-<lb />ics and certainly the product on<lb /><lb />the floor had to change. None of |<lb /><lb />those can be done overnight.?<lb />No, it wont come overnight.<lb />It is a gradual process, much like<lb />the one Skip Holtz employed<lb />with the football team four years<lb />ago. He took a program in sham-<lb /><lb />bles and made being competitive -<lb /><lb />the teams first priority.<lb /><lb />Every season under Holtz, the<lb />gridiron Pirates have improved<lb />and now the team, as well as the<lb />fans, fully expect:to win every<lb />time out.<lb /><lb />T think in. Skips fourth<lb />year, he is right on schedule to<lb /><lb />NICHOLAS THIGPEN | THE EAST CAROLINIAN<lb />n as of late:<lb /><lb />McCarthy. And that would be a<lb />reasonable goal for us " to be in<lb />the top echelon and competing<lb />for postseason play in four or<lb />five years.?<lb /><lb />He doesnt rule out the team<lb />being able to do it this year.<lb /><lb />The schedule hasnt been<lb />overloaded with powers, but<lb />recent home outings against<lb />George Mason and VCU illus-<lb />trate the progression the program<lb /><lb />has made. ECU took the Patriots<lb /><lb />to the wire before knocking<lb />off the Rams in an overtime<lb />thriller.<lb /><lb />But it wasnt that they won or<lb />lost these games. The outcomes<lb />could have gone either way.<lb />It was how they played. They<lb />played like a true team, one<lb />capable of reaching postseason<lb />play sooner than some might<lb />think.<lb /><lb />In Hinnants first two sea-<lb />sons as a Pirate, fans knew what<lb /><lb />to expect from the team. The<lb />idea of winning began to grow<lb /><lb />implausible. : .<lb /><lb />Then, we were hoping to.<lb />win,? Hinnant said. Now, were<lb />expecting to win because we<lb />have a better team, better coach-<lb />ing and the chemistry is so much<lb />better.?<lb /><lb />As McCarthys tenure length-<lb />ens, dont be surprised if those<lb />wins grow in numbers in the<lb />coming seasons. . ee<lb /><lb />The 2008-09 Pirates are an<lb />exciting team to watch and worth<lb /><lb />a trip to the hardwood to see. If<lb /><lb />building a team that is going to |<lb /><lb />be competing for the Conference<lb />USA title every single year,? said<lb /><lb />you dont believe me, come to<lb />Minges and check them out. Its<lb />the building beside the football<lb />stadium.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb /></p>
