The ECU Holi-<lb />day Drive, sponsored by ECU<lb />Business Services, began in<lb />November and will run through<lb />Dec.:12. .<lb /><lb />Now in its 14" year, the<lb />holiday drive is a campus-wide<lb />effort to provide assistance to<lb />families in need during the holi-<lb />day season.<lb /><lb />Anew program called Pirates<lb />Treasure has also been launched<lb />on campus. In its first year,<lb />Pirates Treasure is an initiative<lb />encouraging students to drop off<lb />household items they no longer<lb />want or need to various sites on<lb />and off campus. These sites will<lb />be open on ECU reading days,<lb />Dec. 4 and 5, from 10 a.m.-5<lb />p.m. Both drives are a way for<lb />students to make use of all the<lb />items they no longer want or need<lb />as the semester ends, instead of<lb />throwing them away.<lb /><lb />For the Holiday Drive, mem-<lb />bers of the ECU community<lb />are asked to donate toys, food,<lb />clothing and household supply<lb />items to assist local charities<lb />during the holiday season. They<lb />can be dropped off at collection<lb />locations across campus.<lb /><lb />The collected items will be<lb />donated to Pitt County Social<lb />Services ChildrenTs Protective<lb />Services Unit, The REAL Crisis<lb />Center, New Directions. Family<lb />Violence Shelter, Flynn Christian<lb />Home, Pitt County Adult Ser-<lb />vices and the N.C. The<lb />free samples are usually more pricey medications<lb />"an estimated retail value of $16 billion dollars as<lb />reported by a study in PLoS Medicine. Doctors receiv-<lb />ing high-priced medications to distribute to patients<lb />for free may seem like a dream come true, but this<lb />practice is not nearly as generous as it may seem.<lb /><lb />I couldnTt agree more with critics that feel the<lb />distribution of these samples should be banned. My<lb />fear is that doctors may not be prescribing medica-<lb />tions that are best for their patients; instead, they are<lb /><lb />prescribing medications because they have a sample |<lb />~ on hand. ItTs unethical. Medications should be pre-<lb /><lb />scribed based on the best plan for treatment.<lb />Price is also a factor. Companies distributing most<lb /><lb />of the free samples have some of the most expensive -<lb /><lb />medications. Many patients canTt afford to spend the<lb />money on their actual prescription once the sample<lb />has been used. If a patient receives a free sample and<lb />a prescription for a drug they canTt afford, theyT ll<lb />have no choice but to go back to the doctor and have<lb />another prescription written. WhatTs the benefit in<lb />receiving a free sample, then spending more money<lb />on a doctor visit to get a prescription for a cheaper<lb />medication?<lb /><lb />OctoberTs issue of Pediatrics reported that the<lb />majority of these brand-name samples are being<lb />distributed to those who have insurance, as opposed<lb />to those in need. Ken Johnson, a top official of<lb />the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers<lb />of America, said in response to Pediatrics that a<lb />patientTs financial situation is a factor physicians<lb />often consider when distributing such samples.? The<lb />American Journal of Public Health also reported<lb />that in 2003, 13 percent of insured patients received<lb />at least one free sample, where as only 10 percent of<lb />uninsured patients received a free sample.<lb /><lb />What we see is that those who are insured receive<lb />more samples, even though they run the risk of not<lb />being covered for the brand name. Those who arenTt<lb />fortunate enough to have insurance are often over-<lb /><lb />looked for the samples, because they wouldnTt be .<lb /><lb />able to afford medication at all. It seems to me that<lb />it would make more sense to distribute samples to<lb />patients who may need extra assistance.<lb /><lb />The entire practice of distributing free samples<lb />to patients seems to be completely ridiculous. If<lb />distributing free samples causes unethical practices<lb />by doctors and doesnTt benefit patients in the long<lb />run, the distribution of these samples needs to come<lb />to an end. .<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Bring on the<lb /><lb />vegetables<lb /><lb />JASON M. Burger King and McDonaldTs will forever<lb />be the two leaders in the fast food franchises. While<lb />these fast food chains have served billions around the<lb />world, vegetarians still have limited options. Vegetar-<lb />ian fast food restaurants would not only serve those<lb />marginalized by the bigger chains, but would also<lb />reach out to those who canTt stomach another burger<lb />or chicken nugget.<lb /><lb />Vegetarian options at most fast food chains range<lb />from fries to a meatless salad with a possibility of a<lb />veggie burger, a dessert or a baked potato. You can<lb />make a meal out of those, but there is still so much<lb />missing. Fruit servings and other vegetables like peas,<lb />baby carrots and. cabbage are almost unheard of on<lb />drive-thru menus.<lb /><lb />The problem is that the burger is so fast. It takes<lb />almost-no time to heat up a patty, squeeze some<lb />mustard and mayonnaise, add some lettuce, onion<lb />and tomato and then presto--a meal is ready. The<lb />salads and veggie burgers are popular because they<lb />are either already prepared or go through the same<lb />process as any other burger. For a vegetarian fast<lb />food restaurant, the same kind of speed would be<lb />necessary for competition..<lb /><lb />Portobello mushrooms can be prepared into-<lb />~mushroom burgers, or can be sliced to make wraps.<lb /><lb />Salads, like the Waldorf salad, arenTt limited to let-<lb />tuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and cheese. Tofu can be<lb />used as any kind of meat substitute and also tastes<lb />wonderful when marinated. Soy products are another<lb />easy application, and for those who donTt know, there<lb />are several types of veggie burgers.<lb /><lb />Finally, servings of single vegetables could stand<lb />in for French fries. LetTs not forget that anything can<lb />be fried and put into a box for easy access when driv-<lb /><lb />ing: That would be a decent way to sell fried okra or<lb /><lb />fried green beans.<lb /><lb />For those reading this, it may be shocking to<lb />know that ITm not a vegetarian. I still love greasy<lb />cheeseburgers and fried fish sandwiches. However, a<lb />constant diet of fast food doesnTt suffice. Has anyone<lb />else ever bought a hamburger because it felt like<lb />the only option? If I could go out and buy a decent<lb />vegetarian wrap with two side orders of cooked veg-<lb />etables at least twice a week, it would help to balance<lb /><lb />out my eating habits. .<lb />People want to eat healthy, but when there are<lb /><lb />no options or appeal for it, then weTre all trapped in<lb />wishful thinking.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />_ free drugs<lb /><lb />TUESDAY DECEMBER 2,2008 AG<lb /><lb />ie eS<lb /><lb />ce<lb /><lb />; PRION TORR OITS ROIS nee<lb />0 IIE: DS Se LOT ES A KEES oe.<lb />es Pics ae ioe ee ey oH lead ee ee % se 4<lb /><lb />Pn TTTE<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate Rants. A gallon of regular unleaded gas<lb />jumped from $2.50 to almost $5.00, all within<lb />the span of a couple of months. :<lb /><lb />The price increases even caused Sen. John<lb />McCain and Sen. Hillary Clinton to add a plan<lb />for a temporary gas tax alleviation. The peak<lb />in prices caused people to postpone their vaca-<lb />tions and begin looking at alternate methods<lb />of transportation. " .<lb /><lb />As the prices climbed, many Americans<lb />started making changes to their daily lives in<lb />an attempt to compensate for their thinning<lb />wallets. Bikes became all the rage for the<lb />able-bodied and public transportation saw a<lb />surge in users. In Charlotte, the popularity<lb />of the new Lynx train system surpassed all<lb />expectations. ;<lb /><lb />But, like most fads, convenience and<lb />selective memory took over once gas prices<lb />started to drop again. Now wavering just<lb />below $2.00 a gallon, gas prices have allowed<lb />us to go back to our old ways of using our cars<lb />for every type of trip we need. Whether itTs<lb />a road trip across the state or running down<lb />the road for milk, we turn to our cars before<lb />considering any other type of transportation.<lb /><lb />Even with gas prices in our favor, we still<lb />need to consider changing our day-to-day lives<lb />in an effort to preserve our future.<lb /><lb />When met with problems like pollution<lb />and climate change, so often we find it easy<lb />to shrug it off and say weTre not capable of<lb />making any real change. We point to countries<lb />like China and India, whose growing popula-<lb />tions and booming industry can be used as<lb />a scapegoat for many of our worldTs energy<lb />problems, but what about considering an issue<lb />as essential as oil consumption?<lb /><lb />LetTs look at the facts: AmericaTs popula-<lb /><lb />~ tion makes up nearly 5 percent of the world.<lb /><lb />Meanwhile, China and India combined make<lb />up about 37. percent. According to Nation-<lb />Master.com, a collection of data gathered on<lb />the worldTs nations, America uses 20 million<lb />barrels of oil a'day. In contrast, India and<lb />China combined only use about 9 million<lb />barrels a day.<lb /><lb />So, despite the fact that India and China<lb />make up over a third of the worldTs population,<lb />they still only use half the amount of oil that<lb />the United States consumes daily.<lb /><lb />It seems that blaming countries for pol-<lb />lution based on their populations wonTt work<lb />this time. © a<lb /><lb />The fact also remains that oil isnTt going to<lb />last forever. Predictions say we have anywhere<lb />from 50 to 100 years left of crude oil.<lb /><lb />I know as well as many people reading<lb />this that there are areas of life we.canTt help<lb />but use a car for transportation.<lb /><lb />We canTt help that America was built on<lb />sprawling land with little connection between<lb />cities aside from roads. We also canTt help it<lb />when we pick our houses that building devel-<lb />opers choose cheap land twenty miles away<lb />from the closest grocery store. Despite all<lb /><lb />_ these set backs, we all know the small steps we<lb /><lb />can take to cut down on oil consumption.<lb />If we were willing to make changes when<lb /><lb />T our wallet depended on it, canTt we continue<lb /><lb />now that the world depends on it?<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Elise Phillips<lb />Editor in Chief<lb /><lb />Natalie Jurgen Andrea Robertson<lb />News Editor Opinion Editor<lb />Ronnie Woodward Jared Jackson<lb /><lb />Sports Editor<lb /><lb />Cat Potter<lb />Head Copy Editor<lb /><lb />Jessi Braxton<lb />Photo Editor<lb /><lb />Sarah Russell<lb /><lb />Asst. No. 2 is the most stressful option, but it limits<lb />the stress to one all-night cram session.<lb /><lb />So you have been studying for three hours now<lb /><lb />and you feel that if you read one more article or<lb /><lb />complete another round of note cards your face will<lb />melt like the Nazi from Raiders of the Lost Ark. ItTs<lb />probably time for a break. Make it at least 30 minutes,<lb />because if you go beyond that you are likely to give<lb />up for the night. Stop, breathe, get some caffeine and<lb />glue your eyeballs to those dreaded note cards.<lb />Music is another thing that can relieve the stress.<lb />While on your break, pop those buds in your ear and<lb />listen to that playlist titled, I waited until the last<lb /><lb />minute to study yet I still had time to make a playl-<lb />ist.? ECU (8-4, 6-2)<lb />answered with its longest kickoff<lb />return of the season, a 61-yard<lb />runback from unheralded fresh-<lb />man Michael Bowman.<lb /><lb />BowmanTs big run resulted<lb />in a short pass play to tailback<lb />Brandon Simmons, raising the<lb /><lb />PiratesT lead to 30-7 at the half.<lb /><lb />A Ben Hartman miss broke a<lb />streak of 77 consecutive made<lb />extra points. |<lb />Simmons led ECU with four<lb />total touchdowns in his final<lb /><lb />game at Dowdy-Ficklen Sta-<lb />dium. The senior rushed for 115<lb />yards and three touchdowns in<lb />addition to his 7-yard touchdown<lb />reception.<lb /><lb />T couldnTt be more proud<lb />of Brandon Simmons and the<lb />attitude that heTs had as a senior,?<lb />Holtz said. He<lb />ran hard. I thought he really did<lb />a nice job.?<lb /><lb />Whitley had a noteworthy<lb /><lb />_ performance as well, rushing for<lb /><lb />79 yards on just 12 carries.<lb /><lb />The scoring explosion was a<lb />pleasant surprise for an offense<lb />that has only scored 30 points<lb />one time this season and hadnTt<lb />scored 40 points, let alone 50<lb />points this season.<lb /><lb />ECU records important<lb /><lb />KELLEN HOLTZMAN<lb />THE East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />When coach Mack McCarthy<lb />took the reigns of the ECU menTs<lb />basketball. program, wins over<lb />VCU and Winthrop were any-<lb />thing but a given. Just one season<lb />into his regime, McCarthyTs team<lb />continues to prove things arenTt<lb />what they used to be.<lb /><lb />After losing a closely con-<lb />tested battle last Saturday with<lb />George Mason, 77-71, the Pirates<lb />bounced back with victories over<lb />the Rams and the Eagles. ECU<lb />held off VCUTs Eric Maynor in<lb /><lb />a 93-90 overtime thriller before<lb />knocking off Winthrop, 63-60, in<lb />Rock Hill, S.C.<lb /><lb />Sam Hinnant clinched the big<lb />win over the Eagles with 1:07<lb />remaining when he scored two of<lb />his 19 points to give the Pirates<lb />a 61-60 lead.<lb /><lb />After Winthrop failed to<lb />regain the lead, a layup from<lb />point guard Brock Young gave<lb />ECU a three-point advantage<lb />with 25 seconds left. Jontae Sher-<lb />rod grabbed the game-securing<lb />rebound on the ensuing pos-<lb />session.<lb /><lb />The Pirates continued to get<lb />solid play in the post from Dar-<lb /><lb />rius Morrow and Chad Wynn.<lb /><lb />Morrow put up 13 points and<lb /><lb />seven rebounds while Wynne<lb />came up just short of a double-<lb />double with nine points and 10<lb />boards.<lb /><lb />The Eagles built a 27-16 lead<lb />in the first half before ECU put<lb />together a 15-5 run to close the<lb />margin to 32-31 at halftime.<lb /><lb />The Pirates never led by<lb />more than six in a second half<lb />that featured five ties and seven<lb />lead changes.<lb /><lb />Last TuesdayTs tilt with VCU<lb />was even more nail-biting. _<lb /><lb />After a three-pointer from<lb />Maynor tied the game with 1:43<lb /><lb />Quarterback Patrick Pinkney<lb />went 17-for-23 and threw for 228<lb />yards and two touchdowns on the<lb />afternoon.<lb /><lb />Tt feels great,?
