Repre-<lb /><lb />sentatives from boththe Greenville<lb />and ECU Police Departments, ©<lb />including Greenville Police Chief<lb /><lb />William Anderson, were on hand<lb />to give information on parking and<lb />safety issues.<lb /><lb />Chief Anderson called the<lb /><lb />meeting ~a joint effort between:<lb /><lb />the city, ECU, and especially the<lb />- student government.?<lb /><lb />Greenville mayor Pat Dunn,<lb />members of the Greenville City Coun-<lb />cil and ECU Student Government,<lb />as well as students and other com-<lb />munity members attended the event.<lb /><lb />Corey Barrett, Parking<lb />Enforcement officer for the<lb />~Greenville Police Department,<lb /><lb />addressed the recent changes in -<lb /><lb />parking around campus.<lb />According to Barrett, neigh-<lb />borhood associations around<lb />campus felt a need for the changes,<lb />and brought the issue to the citys<lb />attention. ECUs administration<lb />assured the Public Works Depart-<lb /><lb />ment that there were ample spaces<lb />on campus for student parking.<lb />After receiving assurance from<lb />the university regarding student<lb />parking, the city decided to make<lb />the changes.<lb /><lb />The affected areas include<lb />Reade Circle to Elm St. and East<lb />Fifth Street to the Tar River. No<lb />parking is allowed between 8 a.m.<lb />and 5 p.m. without an A pass issued<lb />by the city. This is not the same<lb />pass issued by ECU Parking and<lb />ene ieapee In order to obtain<lb /><lb />an.A..pass from.the.city, citizens<lb /><lb />must provide proof of residency in<lb /><lb />these areas. Cars parked without a<lb /><lb />permit are at risk of being towed.<lb />The main issue of the night<lb /><lb />was personal safety. Sgt. Michael -<lb /><lb />Staffelbach of the Greenville<lb />Police Department gave safety tips<lb /><lb />- for community members"those<lb /><lb />who live on and off campus. He<lb />named three key components of<lb />crime--desire, ability and opportu-<lb />nity--and stressed the importance<lb /><lb />_ of the publics interest and involve-<lb /><lb />ment in their own safety.<lb /><lb />From a victims standpoint,<lb />you can control a criminals oppor-<lb />tunity, he said.<lb /><lb />He addressed specific issues<lb /><lb />-related to students, such as the<lb /><lb />upcoming holiday season. He<lb />advised that students take home<lb />valuables, such as laptops, iPods,<lb />and credit cards. Students were<lb />also advised to stop incoming mail,<lb />and to refrain from leaving mes-<lb /><lb />sages on their doors or voicemails<lb />saying that they would be away.<lb /><lb />Safety tips given to students,<lb />but often ignored, were also<lb />stressed, such as walking in groups,<lb />staying in well-lit areas and being<lb />aware of ones surroundings.<lb /><lb />SGA treasurer Guillaume<lb /><lb />Bagal said that the idea to bring<lb />the meeting to campus was about<lb />getting students involved with the<lb />community.<lb />'. Tt made it extremely conve-<lb />nient for students...its very easy<lb />for students to.get distracted and<lb />decide that its too much and not<lb />come,? he said.<lb /><lb />Bagal and SGA secretary<lb />Beth Anne Koury stressed the<lb />importance of students getting<lb />involved to help promote safety.<lb />They said many students wait until<lb />something horrible affects them or<lb />someone they know before show-<lb />ing concern.<lb /><lb />Thats what usually hap-<lb />pens,? said Koury. After some-<lb />thing happens people wake up and<lb />say, ~Oh, we care.<lb /><lb />She said students should be<lb />proactive instead of reactive...<lb /><lb />. instead of waiting for something<lb /><lb />to happen?<lb /><lb />ECU graduate Christo-<lb />pher Tyson believes the views<lb />expressed by Bagal and Koury<lb />are accurate. Tyson, who gradu-<lb />ated in Decembef 2007, was the<lb />victim of an April shooting when<lb />a robber intruded on a gathering at<lb /><lb />g<lb /><lb />a friends apartment. The shooting<lb />left him paralyzed from the waist<lb />down. Tyson said he never thought<lb />about something like that happén-<lb />ing to him.<lb /><lb />T just felt like if you werent<lb />doing anything negative to put<lb />yourself in that situation that you<lb />would be OK,? he said.<lb /><lb />He said that now he is much<lb />more aware that anything can<lb />happen, anywhere, to anyone,<lb />anytime.?<lb /><lb />Although he was not in what<lb /><lb />_-he-felt-was.a vulnerable position...<lb />had the pass/fail option like N.C. .<lb /><lb />at the time of the robbery, Tyson<lb />said it is important for students to<lb />follow safety advice and to avoid<lb />confrontation.<lb /><lb />If someone tries to rob you,<lb />go ahead and give it up and live to<lb />see another day,? he said.<lb /><lb />In an effort to get students<lb />involved in campus issues, SGA<lb />is trying to have a greater presence<lb />on campus so that students get to<lb />know members and feel comfort-<lb />able talking to them. Theyve<lb />started initiatives such as monthly<lb />Student Appreciation Days, on<lb />which they hand out free school<lb />supplies in an effort to reach out<lb />to students.<lb /><lb />Bagal said that it was a mes-<lb />sage that SGAwould be reinforc-<lb />ing consistently.<lb /><lb />Were going to have to get<lb />repetitive with this,? he said. All students have access<lb />to the Academic Advising and<lb />Support Center and the 2008-<lb />2009 advising manual, but the<lb />information is easy to overlook<lb />when students are unaware of<lb />what they are looking for.<lb /><lb />ECU students are forced to<lb />make big decisions about drop-<lb />ping courses 0; grade replace-<lb />ment, within the limits of the<lb />universitys policies.<lb /><lb />According to two students,<lb />the policies at ECU are quite<lb />different from other neighboring<lb /><lb />colleges.<lb /><lb />When asked about ECU drop<lb />policies, junior Camie Hileman<lb />said she likes them, but wishes<lb />there were more drops available<lb />in higher course levels. ©<lb />T think it would be.nice if we<lb /><lb />State, where you can take aclass<lb />and it doesnt matter what you<lb /><lb />get in the class, just if you pass<lb />it, you get the credit. Mooney<lb />of the department of sociology<lb />in conjunction with the Center<lb />for Survey Research, the Center<lb />for Diversity and Inequality<lb />Research and the GLBT Student<lb /><lb />Union, began on Oct. 28 after:<lb /><lb />nearly nine months of planning<lb />and research.<lb /><lb />TWith] the campus climate<lb />survey, there were a variety of<lb /><lb />Todays<lb />Carolinian<lb />News _<lb /><lb />Opinion<lb /><lb />Features<lb /><lb />Sports<lb />Classifieds<lb /><lb />groups represented--questions<lb />about race, ethnicity, gender and<lb />sexual orientation [were asked],?<lb />said Mooney. So what I decided<lb />to do was to look at one of those<lb />groups, one that I think is often<lb />overlooked.?<lb /><lb />Aaron Lucier, adviser foi the<lb />GLBT Student Union, reiterates<lb />that point.<lb /><lb />The GLBT population is<lb />somewhat invisible. A lot of<lb />people may not know if someone<lb />who is gay, lesbian or bisexual<lb /><lb />_ person is in their presence,? he<lb /><lb />said.<lb />The purpose of the survey<lb /><lb />is to gauge the overall climate<lb /><lb />toward GLBT persons in the<lb />ECU community, and also to<lb />effect change in areas, that may<lb />be lacking, Mooney said.<lb /><lb />We want to have a healthy<lb />and supportive environment for<lb />working and living and learn-<lb /><lb />Pirate Rant.<lb />.of the Day<lb /><lb />: To the girl who poured her<lb />: Sea of Sangria into her :<lb />: Ugg boot and drank it:<lb />: Hands down, one of the :<lb />: nastiest things lve seen a :<lb />: while. The<lb />results of this survey may help<lb />us do that by identifying areas<lb />where we need improvement.<lb /><lb />Alternatively, the survey results<lb /><lb />may indicate that there are no,<lb />or at least very few problems on<lb />campus when it comes to GLBT<lb />issues, and that is valuable to<lb />know as well.?<lb /><lb />Mooney and her team have<lb />advertised the survey through<lb />posters and flyers, a spot on the<lb />student radio station, WZMB,<lb />an article in The Daily Reflector<lb />and e-mails sent to the entire<lb />student body through the Student<lb />Announce organization"but<lb />Mooney says that the number<lb />of students, faculty and staff<lb /><lb />(approximately 350) who have<lb /><lb />filled out the survey has been less<lb />than she expected.<lb />T know that 350 people are<lb /><lb />not representative of the GLBT<lb /><lb />Features<lb /><lb />: The GLBT Student.Union<lb />: put on a drag show last<lb />: night on campus.<lb />: inside for details.<lb /><lb />Look<lb /><lb />page AG<lb /><lb />community here,? Mooney said.<lb />My guess would be that: it<lb />severely underestimates GLBT<lb />faculty, staff and students.?<lb /><lb />The GLBT survey is com-<lb />pletely anonymous and confiden-<lb />tial, something that Mooney says<lb />she cant stress enough.<lb /><lb />There might be some fear<lb />of repercussions, but I want<lb />to say that this survey is truly<lb />anonymous and confidential,?<lb />she said. You can fill it out at<lb />any computer, on campus or off<lb />campus. We dont know who<lb />you are, and we dont care who<lb />you are. We [just] want to get<lb />an accurate description of GLBT<lb />people on campus.?<lb /><lb />Mooney, who has been an<lb />ECU faculty member for 22<lb />years, thinks that the reason few<lb />people have completed thé survey<lb />is out of fear or hopelessness.<lb /><lb />T think that there is a sense<lb /><lb />in this community of ~whats the<lb />point,? she said. If I could talk to every<lb /><lb />GLBT staff, faculty and student,<lb /><lb />I would say that this is probably<lb />one of the most important things<lb />that youll ever do.?<lb /><lb />Lucier applauds Mooneys<lb />work and says that filling out<lb />the GLBT survey is an important<lb />opportunity for the students,<lb />faculty and staff who are a part<lb />of this population.<lb /><lb />If someone takes the effort<lb />and time to ask you some serious<lb />hard questions, I think its worth-<lb />while to take the time to answer<lb />those.serious hard questions and<lb /><lb /> GLBT page A4<lb /><lb />Sports<lb /><lb />: The ECU football team<lb />: travels to play its confer-<lb />- ence rival this weekend.<lb />: Where are the Pirates<lb />: headed?<lb /><lb />page Bl<lb /><lb /></p>

The obsession began to grow,<lb />escalating to his wedding night,<lb />when he chose. pornography over<lb />consummation.<lb /><lb />The affair with porn became<lb />such an obsession, that it ended<lb />their marriage.<lb /><lb />Broken up into two separate<lb /><lb />parts, Leahys lecture exploredthe _<lb /><lb />effects that pornography has on the<lb />body and mind, along with detail-<lb />ing the recovery he experienced<lb />through spirituality.<lb /><lb />Leahy clarified the definition<lb />of porn and questioned the audi-<lb />ences ability to recognize porn.<lb /><lb />Pornography is any material<lb />that has the purpose of sexual<lb /><lb />arousal,? said Leahy, who used .<lb /><lb />mainstream video images to dis-<lb />play the many forms that porn is<lb />present in todays society.<lb /><lb />But while the effects of his<lb />addiction were strong, Leahy<lb />eventually began his what he<lb />called his recovery.? <lb />lon.<lb /><lb />O =<lb />Out with Bush<lb /><lb />Are we ready to put comedy aside -<lb />and take a serious looks at politics?<lb /><lb />JASON M. WALLACE<lb />THE East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />President-elect Barack Obama has been chosen to<lb />lead America into a new land of fulfilled hopes and<lb />promises. As citizens, we must help this country and<lb />each other to bring the changes that are needed to fix the<lb />problems we face today. With all the proposed changes,<lb />are we ready to leave what weve grown used to?<lb />I think we are ready to fix the problems that will<lb />carry over from the Bush administration. However,<lb />are we ready for the changes in our popular culture? I<lb />feel that the comedic side of the media has displaced<lb />pride in our country and our views of American<lb />politics. Since Bushs inauguration, there has been<lb />some kind of comedic shadow to his every foot-<lb />Step in politics. Comedy Central aired Thats My<lb />Bush!? on April 4, 2001. This show, along with Will<lb />Ferrells impersonation of Bush, set the president up<lb />as a running joke as leng as the news was updated.<lb />The attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 halted the media from<lb />producing any sort of anti-Bush shows. Since 2003,<lb />when the country was gearing up for the election, and<lb />all the events that have taken place since his second<lb />term, Bush has become a comic novelty item. From<lb />little things like gift cards, posters of Bushism?<lb />quotes, coffee mugs and Internet humor to the big<lb />network television programs including The Daily<lb />Show? and The Late Show with David Letterman,?<lb />Bush has been a comics gold mind. Now with only<lb />about two months left before Obama and Biden take<lb />the White House, we the people must change our views<lb />on politics and the media. I think that it is going to be<lb />hard for the media to put Obama in a bad light unless<lb />something goes terribly wrong in his administration.<lb />I think that during Bushs administration, it was<lb />so easy for anyone to dislike the current president<lb />due to what the media portrayed him to be. It felt<lb />like America had revisited those rebellious high<lb />school days and returned with feelings of scorn and<lb />judgment for our nations leaders. Now the leaders<lb />are going to change, for better or for worse; but<lb />will our attitudes toward America change as well?<lb />I think that Bushs spotlight in the media made<lb />more Americans point and laugh at their TV sets<lb />instead of read the newspapers. We became so<lb />obsessed in picking out his little mistakes, that<lb />having pride or interest in America became a joke.<lb />When Barack Obama and John McCain were nomi-<lb />nated as their party leaders to run for president, the<lb />media heavily focused on their plans. Now that the<lb />debates are all over, 1 hope that we wont return<lb />to the state of an unpatriotic and apathetic nation.<lb />Saturday Night Live? and The Colbert Report?<lb />will run skits about Obama Im sure, but I wont<lb />let any slanted media program sway my opinions.<lb />As long as humans are fallible, there will always be<lb /><lb />~presidents who will receive negative criticism from<lb />the press. I hope that whatever happens with the new<lb />president, we can make our country a little better with<lb />the support of our leader and with the support of one<lb />another regardless of how popular culture leads us.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Whos to blame for<lb />this generation?<lb /><lb />MARY DIXON<lb /><lb />Tue East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />As a child, I could never understand my parents<lb /><lb />contempt for how I behaved. I acted just like my<lb />~friends, but as I grow older, I think Im starting to<lb />understand the age old saying of, kids these days.?<lb /><lb />The upcoming generation is certainly one full of<lb />problems. It seems that every group of kids slightly<lb />changes social norms throughout time, but it seems<lb />that kids these days have less regard for rules and<lb />moral responsibility, and more for instant gratifica-<lb />tion. But who is to blame? Should we point fingers at<lb />the media, the school systems or should we point the<lb />finger at ourselves?<lb /><lb />Lets start at school. Fourth grade teacher at<lb />Y.E. Smith Elementary School in Durham and ECU<lb />graduate Dana Hyland has only been teaching for a few<lb />months, but has already witnessed the drastic change<lb />in childrens behavior these days.<lb /><lb />My kids are all good children. But, they have<lb />learned a lot of things from home that surprise me every<lb />day,? she said. Recently, I took my kids on a field trip<lb />and one child came up to me and said ~puff, puff, pass<lb />Ms. Hyland, dont knock the rotation! and I was blown<lb />away. I had to tell the child that it was not OK to say<lb />that at school, but the child kept insisting that it was<lb />OK [because] he had seen it from a movie.?<lb /><lb />If kids are allowed to watch movies and TV shows<lb />that are clearly intended for an older audience, then of<lb />course they are going to think it is all right to repeat<lb />what they see. :<lb /><lb />Parents have to monitor what their children are<lb />exposed to if they expect them to know what is appro-<lb />priate to talk about and what is not. In a generation<lb />where most children are babysat by the television,<lb />it isnt surprising that things are taking a turn for the<lb />worse. So many factors contribute to the degeneration<lb />of our youth.<lb /><lb />A growing problem is the rate of teen pregnancy<lb />among this generation. A study in the November issue<lb />of Pediatrics linked watching sexually charged tele-<lb />vision, and pregnancy in girls ages 12 to 17; and the<lb />results are not favorable. In a controlled study, when<lb />interviewed twice in two years about watching sexually<lb />stimulating television and having sex, 58 girls of the<lb />2,003 adolescents had.become pregnant by the time of<lb />the follow-up interview and 33 of the boys reported<lb /><lb />that they had gotten someone pregnant.<lb />; If we dont start connecting with our children again,<lb />then who knows how bad the next generation could<lb />possibly turn out? Its our duty as adults to guide those<lb />who are new to the world. Our parents helped us grow<lb />and develop into a fairly functional group, so who are<lb />we to deny the opportunity to our youth?<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />THURSDAY NOVEMBER 13, 2008<lb /><lb />AS<lb /><lb />{ Your Procrastination Destination }<lb /><lb />SCHILLER + CRAVENS<lb /><lb />SN<lb /><lb />"" vieumale<lb /><lb />A<lb /><lb />LQ<lb /><lb />© 2008 Jay Schiller &amp; Greg Cravens<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate Rants. Ill never<lb />skip class again!<lb /><lb />Improving the rich,<lb />maintaining the poor<lb /><lb />LAUREN COLLINS<lb />THE East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />As a Greenville native, I have witnessed .<lb />a number of changes in Greenville in the last<lb />decade--even in the last five years. Neighbor-<lb />hoods have expanded off of Highway 11, N.C.<lb />43 and U.S. 264. Apartment complexes. have<lb />flourished; there is now a second Lowes.and a<lb />new City Hall building has been constructed as<lb />well. New restaurants, shopping centers and<lb />construction efforts for ECU and Pitt Memo-<lb />rial Hospital benefit students, residents and<lb />visitors.<lb /><lb />Though there are a number of changes that<lb />have helped enhance the appearance and perfor-<lb />mance of Greenville, it seems there are a number<lb />of projects that are being neglected. Though<lb />there are currently sidewalk projects in progress<lb />on Greenville Boulevard and Fire Tower Road,<lb />which were certainly needed, additional side-<lb />walks need to be constructed in high-pedestrian<lb />areas as funds are available.<lb /><lb />Among the limited number of sidewalks<lb />currently located in residential areas between<lb />Evans and Memorial Boulevard, around West<lb />Fifth Street, a number of them are deteriorat-<lb />ing or damaged. There is also limited lighting<lb />due to street lights and businesses that are<lb />lacking in this part of town. This particular<lb />area of Greenville is surrounded by flourishing<lb />developments including, but not limited to, the<lb />additions to the hospital, downtown Greenville<lb />and the university.<lb /><lb />How is it possible that so many city enhance-<lb />ments are drastically expanding, but this par-<lb />ticular section of town remains the same dark,<lb />disheveled bit of Greenville that it has been for<lb />over 10 years now? It seems plausible that the<lb />amount of money contributed to city improve-<lb />ments should be distributed among all parts of<lb />the city, not just the more frequented areas.<lb /><lb />By April 2009, there are supposed to be<lb />cameras at the Eppes and South Greenville Rec-<lb />reation Centers to monitor the safety of citizens,<lb />though cameras have already been installed at<lb />Jaycee Park and the Aquatics and Fitness Center.<lb />Air conditioning systems are supposed to be set<lb />up in the gymnasiums at the Eppes Recreation<lb />Center and the Aquatics and Fitness Center as<lb />well. Its surprising that it will be another six<lb />months before the remaining facilities will be<lb />accommodated with the improvements that the<lb />others have already received.<lb /><lb />The West Fifth Street Gateway Project is<lb />supposed to enhance the appearance of the ball<lb />park currently situated on the block of Memorial<lb />Boulevard and West Fifth Street. The design<lb />plan includes a gated park with brick walks and<lb />benches, as well as a community space. This<lb /><lb />was the final project design that was intended<lb /><lb />to enhance the street appearance of Martin<lb />Luther King Boulevard (the MLK Gateway<lb />Project). Efforts with the project appear to be<lb />progressing slowly. Greenvilles 2007 Project<lb />proposal even stated public involvement...will<lb />be minimal.?<lb /><lb />I suppose when city taxes are involved in<lb />Greenville development plans, those paying<lb />the taxes dont particularly want to support the<lb />areas they dont frequent; however, improve-<lb />ments should be city-wide and not limited to the<lb />areas where the money comes from. You would<lb />think that the efforts to maintain and improve<lb />Greenvilles appearance would be city-wide, ©<lb />but judging from the development locations,<lb />this just isnt so.<lb /><lb />Instead of touching up porches and yards,<lb />not viewable from the street, in efforts to<lb />maintain Historic Greenville, broken fences<lb />and deteriorating parking lots and roads could<lb />be addressed first. By improving the city as<lb />a whole, we are not only promoting unity,<lb />but encouraging the growth of Greenville and<lb />shifting to a more welcoming environment for<lb />visitors.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />- Opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Elise Phillips<lb />Editor in Chief<lb /><lb />Andrea Robertson<lb />Opinion Editor<lb /><lb />Natalie Jurgen<lb />News Editor<lb /><lb />Jared Jackson<lb />Asst. The postwar,<lb />~A0s-style elegance of the original Bond (the first book was published<lb />in 1953) was not the product of Pilates or free weights, but military<lb />training slightly diluted by devoted dissipation, self-indulgence and<lb /><lb />operable knowledge of his own--and others--mortality.<lb />He was also naughty. When Connery began playing Bond, sex<lb /><lb />in the mainstream media still carried with it a frisson of the forbid-<lb /><lb />den, and the actor was all about sex. He wasnt bulked-up, like<lb /><lb />todays action heroes. But he did. have the blessing of good timing:<lb /><lb />There was a president in the White House who looked like he actu-__<lb />ally slept with his wife (and everyone else, as it turned out) and _<lb />the Bond films were part of a sexual awakening that helped turn<lb /><lb />the public chasteness of the Roosevelt, Truman and ere<lb />on its head.<lb /><lb />Salen. was Bond throughout the so-called<lb />Sexual Revolution, and, while we may be project-<lb />ing, is it any wonder that Roger Moore always<lb />seemed a little exhausted? Moore, a perfectly<lb />capable actor, launched a reign that extended<lb />throughout the ~70s and into the early ~80s. He<lb />was the disco-era Bond--a little decadent, a little .<lb />seedy around the edges; one imagines oversize "<lb />sunglasses, oversize shirt collars and an air of<lb />calculated hipness that now seems ee suave<lb />than surreal.<lb /><lb />~The classically trained Timothy Dalton sisted<lb />the role in 1987 with The Living Daylights (another<lb />great title), and, while Dalton is held in generally<lb />low regard by Bond-o-philes, hes sorely misjudged.<lb />He can be funny; he can be charming. He was a<lb /><lb />_ bridge between the Reagan-era Moore and the Clin-<lb /><lb />ton-era Pierce Brosnan, one reflecting indulgence,<lb />the other irony. Who was a more ironical Bond<lb />that Brosnan?<lb /><lb />He was the best--OK, fanboys, the best besides<lb /><lb />- Connery, but a far better actor and even comedian.<lb />. And in what seems a gesture toward the corporati-<lb /><lb />zation of our culture, he was cut loose like a Ford<lb />worker. Enter Daniel Craig.<lb /><lb />Arthur Conan Doyle never got to see Basil<lb />Rathbone play Sherlock Holmes. Dashiell Ham-<lb />mett had written the Thin Man novel before William<lb />Powell made Nick Charles his own. Its probably<lb /><lb />merciful that Fleming isnt around to see whats<lb /><lb />become of Bond, not because the films are bad or<lb />that Craig isnt necessarily good, but just because<lb />James Bond has becomé something else, something<lb /><lb />- more obvious, played by a guy who may be hot, but<lb /><lb />isnt sufficiently cool.<lb /><lb />At 106 minutes, Quantum of Solace is easily the<lb />shortest James Bond movie, although Daniel Craig<lb />shouldnt feel dissed--his first as 007, Casino Royale<lb />(2006), was the longest (144 minutes) in the nearly<lb />five-decade-long Bond series. That film reintroduced<lb />us to James Bond, not as the university-schooled<lb />secret agent and seducer, but as a more thuggish<lb />mercenary, pursuing high- stakes terrorists via a<lb />high-stakes card game.<lb /><lb />In Quantum of Solace--which last week was<lb />busy breaking U.K. box-office records--Bond battles<lb />Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric), an environmen- |<lb />tal bandit in the guise of a noted conservationist,<lb />who is planning a Bolivian coup detat. Bond is also<lb />seeking revenge for the death of Bond Girl Vesper<lb />Lynd. And he does it in record time.<lb /><lb />Overall, the. Bond film as a genre has been<lb />remarkably consistent in length--most are just about<lb />two hours, many of the early Sean Connerys films<lb /><lb />are less, and each in the Roger Moore oeuvre clocks<lb /><lb />in, suspiciously consistently, at about two hours, 10<lb />minutes. On Her Majestys Secret Service--notable<lb />for the one-time appearance of actor George Lazenby<lb /><lb />_as Bond--was, until Craig, the longest in the series.<lb /></p>

Snow Patrol established<lb />themselves as the new Coldplay. Take that as you will, but it meant big<lb />things for the band. Now they were on the map and people expected great<lb />things. A Hundred Million Suns seems like the unfortunate expected reac-<lb />tion: Do the same thing again. The album is very safe, never venturing<lb />beyond any of the pre-established melodies that Snow Patrol is known<lb />for: Its full of somewhat-memorable moments, but none are equally or<lb />more impressive than Chasing Cars.? Its certainly a pleasing entry, but<lb />as far as growth, they havent gained an inch.<lb /><lb />Kaiser Chiefs " Off With Their Heads, 4 out of 5<lb /><lb />Kaiser Chiefs Off With Their Heads is a rare alternative rock album.<lb />Any lesser band wouldnt be able to pack a punch in the first few tracks<lb />before devolving into a series of same-sounding songs. Kaiser Chiefs<lb />vary things throughout the album without ever being too cheeky or<lb />nonsensically different. The crescendos of Never Miss a Beat? topped<lb />with a riveting keyboard siren make it nearly epically operatic. Theyve<lb />taken lessons from their elders and consequentially have the rollicking<lb />qualities of R.E.M. but with the control and discipline of Talking Heads.<lb /><lb />Taylor Swift " Fearless, 4 out of 5<lb /><lb />Taylor Swift seemingly came out of nowhere and blew everyone<lb />away. She was country without being annoyingly so, yet wasnt too<lb />poppy. In return, everyone waited anxiously for her sophomore album,<lb />Fearless. It delivers. From the title track to the end, it seems as if Swift has<lb />a bottomless bag of catchy tunes. Even more impressive is her ability to<lb />make cliché material like young teenage love sound interesting (witness _<lb />Fifteen?). Fearless sees her moving forward, stepping even a little bit<lb />further away from country, especially considering the twang in her voice<lb />is barely audible and the fiddles are replaced by orchestral strings. And if<lb />youre wondering, yes--the song Hey Stephen? is definitely about me.<lb /><lb />The Flaming Lips " Christmas on Mars, 3.5 out of 5<lb /><lb />A seven-year project in the making, the Flaming Lips have finally<lb />released their film, Christmas on Mars. With it comes the soundtrack, a<lb />landscape of distorted sounds worthy of a Stanley Kubrick movie. Its<lb />hard to talk about music without the film, as its certainly integral to<lb />the experience. Together theyre perfect; apart not as much. <lb />Be<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ SPORTS<lb /><lb />Halfway to the Super Bowl<lb /><lb />As the days grow frigid and the sun sets just a little bit sooner, the pressure on NFL teams to win<lb />becomes significantly higher. Its crunch time baby, and frankly I dont think anyone from here to South<lb />Africa could have ever predicted the outcome of the season thus far. With only six regular season<lb />games remaining I feel it is an adequate time to throw out some playoff predictions.<lb /><lb />THE ASSOCIATED PRESS -<lb /><lb />The Giants appear to be the NFCs best team.<lb /><lb />THE ASSOCIATED PRESS<lb /><lb />Chris Johnson (28) and the Titans are undefeated...<lb /><lb />_ SEAN LABAR<lb />THE East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />The New York Giants: Congratulations Tom<lb />Coughlin, you have done it. You have somehow<lb />managed to let both Tiki Barber and Michael Strahan<lb /><lb />retire; get rid of Jeremy Shockey and lose pro-bowl "<lb /><lb />defensive end Osi Umenyiora for the season. Its all<lb /><lb />good in New York though, the G-men have come<lb />back with a more mature and talented team this year<lb />with a second consecutive Super Bowl ring gleaming<lb />in the back of their minds. Hats off to the Giants. If<lb />they keep up this good play, they will surely secure<lb />the No. 1 NFC seed in the playoffs.<lb /><lb />The Carolina Panthers: The Panthers finally<lb />have a healthy Jake Delhomme/Steve Smith con-<lb /><lb />~ nection. At 7-2, Carolina is playing the best football<lb /><lb />since its Super Bowl season of 2003. With one of<lb />the best quarterback/receiver tandems in the game<lb />and a solid running game backed up by DeAngelo<lb />Williams, I have the Panthers as my second NFC<lb />playoff seed.<lb /><lb />Arizona Cardinals: The Cardinals are a huge<lb />surprise this season, and nobody in Arizona seems to<lb />mind. After 21 years in Phoenix, the Cards seem to<lb />have the confidence and composure to land them in<lb />their second playoff appearance in team history. Kurt<lb /><lb />Warner may be old, but he is showing the veteran -<lb /><lb />leadership necessary to move a young team like this<lb />forward. After a scary hit just three weeks ago, the<lb />Cardinals have receiver Anquan Boldin back on the<lb />roster. The Fitzgerald-Boldin combination is tough to<lb />stop. [ll take the Cardinals to win the NFC West.<lb /><lb />Minnesota Vikings: Still a toss up in the NFC<lb />north. As of now, I am going with my gut and pick-<lb />ing the Minnesota Vikings over the Chicago Bears.<lb />Adrian Peterson is leading the league in rushing yards<lb />and simply cant be stopped. This division is still up<lb /><lb />-in the air, and it will be fun to watch it play out.<lb /><lb />Washington Redskins: The theme in Washing-<lb />ton nowadays seems to be centered on change,?<lb />and that is just what the Redskins got. Owner Daniel<lb />Snyder finally made a good decision in bringing in<lb />first-year coach Jim Zorn, who has used his experi-<lb />ence with quarterbacks to hand-mold Jason Camp-<lb />bell. Campbell, who has thrown for nearly 2,000<lb />yards, has been precise and careful with the football.<lb />He has proven that he can manage Zorns high-pow-<lb />ered West coast offense. Campbells ability to run the<lb />offense has opened up tremendous opportunities for<lb /><lb />running back Clinton Portis, who is second in the<lb /><lb />league in rushing yards. I like the Skins for the top<lb />wildcard seed heading into the playoffs.<lb /><lb />Dallas Cowboys: Yes, its bold, but I feel that<lb />the Cowboys will get it back together. At the begin-<lb />ning of the season, almost everyone had Americas<lb />team as the NFC favorite. Losing Tony Romo for<lb />just a couple weeks took a huge toll on this team,<lb />however, and his health will be vital for the Cowboys<lb />_ the rest of the way. If Wade Phillips can get some<lb />production out of T.O. and newly acquired receiver<lb />Roy Williams, then I think Dallas stands a legitimate<lb />shot for slipping into the playoffs.<lb /><lb />The Tennessee Titans:<lb />country music, the people of Nashville have a lot<lb /><lb />© OLDEN OEE ER REL EEL EELELELEEEEDED LEBEL EEDEEL ELE EEER EEE ELEDELEREEDEEEDIHEEEEEREDEEUEELE<lb /><lb />In a city known for.<lb /><lb />to be thankful for. The Titans, at a perfect 9-0,<lb />are fighting to remain unbeaten this season.<lb /><lb />Theres an old gridiron that says, defense wins<lb /><lb />championships.? Tennessee is a team powered<lb />by fierce defensive play and it will be interest-<lb />ing to see whether it can hold true to the saying.<lb />With Chris Johnson and LenDale White creating<lb />a thunder/lightning effect in the backfield and<lb />veteran quarterback Kerry Collins managing<lb />the offense, the Titans have the total package.<lb />They are a lock for the No. 1 AFC seed in the<lb />2009 playoffs.<lb /><lb />The Pittsburgh Steelers: Mike Tomlin has<lb />these boys in check. With a healthy Willie Parker<lb />and accurate Ben Roethlisberger, the Steelers are<lb />a tough team to contend with. At 6-3, they are still<lb /><lb />competing with the Ravens for the AFC North,<lb />~but I feel they will run away with it in the final.<lb /><lb />stretch of the season. The Steelers are my pick<lb />for the No. 2 seed.<lb /><lb />The New England Patriots: After losing<lb />Tom Brady before the season started, no one<lb />had faith in the New England Patriots. But how<lb />could you sleep on this team? Head coach Bill<lb />Belichick has a regular season record of 133-84<lb />and. simply knows the recipe for success. The<lb />Patriots know what it takes to win and they are<lb />doing just that. If Matt Cassel can keep making<lb /><lb />good-decisions, then the New England Patriots<lb /><lb />will make yet another playoff appearance. I have<lb />the Pats as the third seed in the AFC playoffs.<lb /><lb />The Denver Broncos: Both the Denver<lb />Broncos and San Diego Chargers are fighting<lb /><lb />for the. AFC Wests playoff spot. No matter the<lb /><lb />outcome, neither team has the talent to compete<lb />once playoff time rolls around. Ill go with the<lb />Broncos to win the division, but it will be a long,<lb /><lb />tough road for whatever team wins the AFC: West ©<lb /><lb />come January.<lb /><lb />Baltimore Ravens: Though they are com-<lb />peting with the Steelers in the AFC North, the<lb />Ravens will still most likely claim a wildcard<lb />spot and compete in the playoffs. Rookie quar-<lb /><lb />terback Joe Flacco is making a name for himself<lb />in Baltimore and has led the team to a healthy<lb />6-3 record. The Ravens defense is living up to<lb /><lb />their reputation--ranking first in the league in rush<lb />yards allowed and second in pass yards allowed.<lb />If this.success continues, I have the Ravens as<lb />my No. 5 AFC seed. .<lb /><lb />The Indianapolis Colts: Though the Colts<lb />only have a record of 5-4 and are sitting behind<lb />the undefeated Titans in the AFC South, they are<lb />playing their best football right now. After beat-<lb />ing both New England and Pittsburgh in the last<lb />two weeks, the Colts have tons of momentum for<lb />the remainder of the season. Peyton Manning is<lb /><lb />familiar when it comes to the playoffs, and I am:<lb /><lb />confident that he will make another appearance<lb />in 2009.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />CE OTROS EE REEL EER EEL EERO TREE HEDEE ELE EERO ORECREREECROERERET ERT EE OEETEEOREEOEEEEEERS<lb /><lb />Week 11: Ranking the Carolinas<lb /><lb />RONNIE ee<lb /><lb />Record: 7-2<lb /><lb />Tue East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />Last week: Won vs. Georgia Tech, 28-7<lb /><lb />UNC defeated its second ranked opponent of the season last weekend"No. 19 Georgia Tech"<lb />and now finds itself ranked No. 17 and has secured its first winning season in seven years. It was<lb />supposed to take Butch Davis some time to turn this thing around, but look at what he has done in<lb />only his second year with the program. Against Georgia Tech, UNC forced three turnovers and scored<lb /><lb />three touchdowns in the final quarter"but the most important stat was T.J. Yates completing his _<lb /><lb />first pass since going down with an injury almost two months ago. Watch out Cam Sexton, there was<lb /><lb />a reason why you were Yates backup before the injury.<lb /><lb />Record: 7- 3<lb /><lb />Last week: Won vs. Arkansas, 34-21<lb /><lb />The only reason wi the Gamecocks arent ranked ahead of UNC is because they lack a win<lb />against a ranked opponent. USC has played a much tougher schedule and has certainly lost to better<lb />teams"Georgia, LSU, Vanderbilt"but USCs best win is at Ole Miss. All of that can change this<lb /><lb />weekend when USC heads to Gainesville to play third-ranked Florida. The Gamecocks, winners of six ~<lb /><lb />of their last seven, are starving for a win over a ranked team. <lb />B4<lb /><lb />RANKING continued from B2<lb /><lb />u Record: 6-3<lb /><lb />Last week: Won vs. Virginia, 28-17<lb /><lb />Wake Forest has suddenly salvaged its season with two-straight quality wins. Coming off an 3<lb />_ Overtime win against Duke, Wake beat Virginia last week"vaulting itself back to the top of the ACC"<lb /><lb />standings. The Deacons are tied with Florida State atop the Atlantic Division, but Wakes win in<lb />Tallahassee earlier this season gives it the tiebreaker advantage over FSU. Donning gold jerseys,<lb />Wake seized conference supremacy last week by forcing four turnovers and holding UVA to 28<lb />rushing yards. With three very winnable games left to play, Wake has. an inside track to the ACC<lb />title game.<lb /><lb />Last week: Won vs. Duke, 27-17<lb /><lb />Record: 3-6<lb /><lb />You might be wondering how a team with three wins can be ranked this high. The answer is<lb />simple: One of N.C. States wins was against ECU, which was ranked No. 14 at the time, and the<lb />other was against Duke last week. The Wolfpack have beaten both of the teams that could make a<lb />claim for the fourth spot in these rankings. One thing is for sure however, the Wolfpack will not be<lb />ranked No. 4 next week, or the week after that. N.C. State plays Wake Forest this week and UNC next<lb />week, so we will definitely find out if last week was simply N.C. States Super Bowl of if it really is a<lb />good team with Russell Wilson fully healthy.<lb /><lb />Record: 6-3 Last week: Won vs. Marshall, 19-16<lb /><lb />The Pirates won a very important game last week, beating C-USA rival Marshall at home. ECU<lb />now appears to be a shoe in for representing the East in the C-USA championship game and going to<lb />a-bowl game for the third year in a row. The next two games"at Southern Miss and at UAB"will be<lb />hard to win however, as these road trips have haunted ECU in the past. With the win over Marshall,<lb />ECU now controls its destiny for the C-USA championship game for the third year in a row. The<lb />Pirates couldnt handle that situation in each of the past two years, but it will oftly hard for that to<lb />happen again"even with the road trips upcoming.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at sports@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />poe<lb />Piercing<lb /><lb />-years of experience<lb />-relaxing, atmosphere<lb />-excellent customer service<lb />-highest quality body jewelry<lb />-All Female Staff<lb />-Newly remodeled<lb />/-top of the iatekcisetal iractntele<lb />equipment<lb />{free gift wrapping<lb />for purchases<lb />over $45!!!<lb />-$5 off piercing w/<lb />valid student ID<lb />August through<lb />October<lb />252.758.8282<lb />208 E. 5th St.<lb />Greenville, NC 27858<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ SPORTS<lb /><lb />THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2008<lb /><lb />MLB player returns "<lb />for Homecoming<lb /><lb />ADDISON HARVEY<lb />THE EAsT CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />Chad Tracy returned to<lb />ECUs Clark-LeClair Stadium<lb />this past weekend to partake in<lb />Homecoming festivities.
