Always<lb />anonymous, Always juicy...? reads the<lb />slogan of the public student gossip site,<lb />Juicy Campus.<lb /><lb />For anyone that has ever visited the<lb />site, it is easy to understand how it got its<lb />name: the juicier the post, the better.<lb /><lb />-The Web site, which was founded<lb />in August of 2007 by Duke University<lb />graduate Matt Ivester, claims to have the<lb />simple mission of enabling online anony-<lb />mous free speech on college campuses,?<lb />according to an article on CNN.com.<lb /><lb />However, the issue of where the line<lb /><lb />of free speech is drawn has been popping<lb />up on campuses nationwide.<lb /><lb />ECU is listed on the site as one of the<lb />500 Juicy Campuses.? With thousands of<lb />posts with thread titles ranging from stu-<lb />dentsT;full names to Teachers That You<lb />Will Love To Get With,? STD Spreading<lb />Gay Boys!?!? and College Hill Whores,?<lb />Juicy Campus is definitely making waves<lb />within the student community.<lb /><lb />While some posts are made in good<lb />fun, a large number of the posts target<lb />specific people, campus organizations,<lb />athletic team members and Greek life<lb />in a malicious manner, which is raising<lb />concern amongst students and adminis-<lb />tration alike.<lb /><lb />We have been reviewing the issue,?<lb /><lb />ASHLEY YARBER |<lb /><lb />said university attorney Donna Payne.<lb />Each situation depends on the particular<lb />set of circumstances involved.?<lb /><lb />Payne went on to explain that gossip<lb /><lb />' sites are very careful of staying within<lb /><lb />the legal parameters and it is extremely<lb /><lb />_ difficult to stop such sites.<lb /><lb />Thanks to the Communications<lb />Decency Act of 1996, the site is protected<lb />under the statement that, the Internet<lb /><lb />people complain about the site, the Attor-<lb />ney General may step in and assist.<lb />Posters believe they are hiding behind<lb />their anonymity, but in reality nothing<lb />is anonymous and if subpoenaed, Juicy<lb />Campus can be forced to provide IP<lb />addresses that trace back to the posters.<lb />Freedom of speech is a qualified<lb />right,? Romary said. You canTt engage<lb />in conduct that is libelous or speech that is<lb /><lb />is a unique medium<lb />entitled to the high-<lb />est protection under<lb />the free speech pro-<lb />tections of the First<lb />Amendment to the<lb />U.S. Constitution,?<lb />according to the<lb /><lb />Center for Democracy and TechnologyT 5<lb /><lb />Web site.<lb /><lb />However, students targeted on Juicy<lb />Campus need to be aware that they can<lb />in fact take action against their anony-<lb />mous posters? ~if statements are false or<lb />defamatory.<lb /><lb />According to the iecior of Student<lb />Legal Services at ECU, Peter Romary,<lb />the first step in removing a libelous or<lb />defamatory post is to get in touch with<lb />~the site and say that what was posted is<lb />defamatory and ask that it be removed.<lb /><lb />Under some circumstances some<lb />posts may be violating criminal law in<lb />North Carolina depending on the intent<lb />of the writer and who the post is directed<lb /><lb />? said Romary.<lb /><lb />In such cases, a decision may be made<lb /><lb />by law enforcement and the Attorney<lb /><lb />General can become involved. ItTs nasty what some<lb />people write. I wouldnTt know what to do<lb />if something was posted about me, but I<lb />would try to do something.?<lb /><lb />The Attorney General in both Con-<lb />necticut and New Jersey has gotten<lb />involved with issues regarding the site as<lb />well. New Jersey Attorney General, Anne<lb />Milgram, subpoenaed the siteTs records<lb />after contact from concerned parents and<lb /><lb />students and Connecticut Attorney Gen-<lb /><lb />eral, Richard Blumenthal, has launched<lb />an investigation of the site.<lb />Posters are reminded that their words<lb /><lb />have consequences and they need to be<lb /><lb />cautious of what they post for thousands<lb />to view.<lb /><lb />This writer. may be contacted at<lb />news@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />criminal or that could<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />Obama plans U.S. terror trials<lb /><lb />to replace Guantanamo<lb /><lb />(AP)<lb /><lb />President-elect ObamaTs<lb />advisers. are crafting plans to<lb />close the Guantanamo Bay prison<lb />and prosecute terrorism suspects<lb />in the U.S., a plan that the Bush<lb />administration said Monday was<lb />easier said than done.<lb /><lb />Under the plan being crafted<lb />inside ObamaTs camp, some<lb />detainees would be released<lb />and others would be charged in<lb />U.S. courts, where they would<lb />receive constitutional rights and<lb />open trials. But, underscoring<lb />the difficult decisions Obama<lb /><lb />~must make to fulfill his pledge of<lb /><lb />shutting down Guantanamo, the<lb />plan could require the creation of<lb />a new legal system to handle the<lb />classified information inherent<lb />in some of the most sensitive<lb />cases.<lb /><lb />Many of the about 250 Guan-<lb />tanamo detainees are cleared for<lb />release, but the Bush administra-<lb />tion has not able been to find a<lb />country willing to take them.<lb /><lb />Advisers participating<lb />directly in the planning spoke on<lb />condition of anonymity because<lb />the plans arenTt final.<lb /><lb />The plan being developed by<lb />ObamaTs team has been cham-<lb />pioned by legal scholars from<lb />both political parties. But as<lb />details surfaced Monday, it drew<lb />criticism from Democrats who<lb />oppose creating a new legal<lb />system and from Republicans<lb />who oppose bringing terrorism<lb />suspects to the U.S. mainland.<lb /><lb />The move would mark a<lb /><lb />sharp change from the Bush<lb />administration, which estab-<lb />lished military tribunals to pros-<lb />ecute detainees at the Navy base<lb />in Cuba and strongly opposes<lb />bringing prisoners to the United<lb />States. At the White House,<lb />spokeswoman Dana Perino said<lb />Monday that President Bush has<lb />faced many challenges in trying<lb />to close the prison.<lb /><lb />We've tried very hard to<lb />explain to people how compli-<lb />cated it is. When you pick up<lb /><lb />people off the battlefield that<lb /><lb />have a terrorist background,<lb />itTs not just so easy to let them<lb />go,? Perino said. These issues<lb />are complicated, and we have<lb />put forward a process that we<lb />think would work in order to put<lb />them on trial through military<lb />tribunals.?<lb /><lb />But Obama has been criti-<lb />cal of that process and his legal<lb />advisers said finding an alter-<lb />native will be a top priority.<lb />One of those advisers, Harvard<lb />law professor Laurence Tribe,<lb />acknowledges that bringing<lb />detainees to the U.S. would be<lb />controversial but said it could be<lb />accomplished.<lb /><lb />MCT<lb /><lb />T think the answer is going<lb />to be, they can be'as securely<lb />guarded on U.S. soil as anywhere<lb />else,? Tribe said. We canTt put<lb />people in a dungeon forever<lb />without processing whether they<lb />deserve to be there.?<lb /><lb />The tougher challenge will<lb />be allaying fears by Democrats<lb />who believe the Bush adminis-<lb />trationTs military commissions<lb />were a farce and dislike the idea<lb />of giving detainees anything less<lb />than the full constitutional rights<lb />normally enjoyed by everyone<lb />on U.S. soil.<lb /><lb />T think that creating a new<lb />alternative court system in<lb />response to the abject failure<lb />of Guantanamo would be a pro-<lb />found mistake,? Jonathan Hafetz,<lb />an American Civil Liberties<lb />Union attorney who represents<lb />detainees, said Monday. We do<lb />not need anew court system. The<lb />last eight years are a testament to<lb />the problems of trying to create<lb />new systems.?<lb /><lb />Senate Judiciary Committee<lb />member John Cornyn, R-Texas,<lb />said it would be a colossal mis-<lb /><lb />take to treat terrorism as a mere<lb /><lb />crime.?<lb /><lb />Tt would be a stunning dis-<lb />appointment if the one of the new<lb />administrationTs first priorities<lb />is to give foreign terror suspects<lb />captured on the battlefield the<lb />same legal rights and protections<lb />as American citizens accused of<lb />crimes,? Cornyn said Monday,<lb />noting that the Senate over-<lb />whelmingly passed a nonbinding<lb />Senate bill last year opposing<lb />bringing detainees to the U.S.<lb /><lb />Obama did not vote on that<lb />measure. He has said the civil-<lb />ian and military court-martial<lb />systems provide a framework<lb />for dealing with the terrorists,?<lb />and Tribe said the administra-<lb />tion would look to those venues<lb />before creating a new legal<lb />system. Vi<lb /><lb />TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2008<lb /><lb />a new system would look like<lb />have already started.<lb /><lb />An Obama administration<lb />will want to avoid the criti-<lb />cisms that have marked the Bush<lb />administrationTs military com-<lb />missions. Human rights groups<lb />and defense attorneys have con-<lb />demned the commissions for<lb /><lb />lax evidence rules and intense<lb /><lb />secrecy. Some military prosecu-<lb />tors have even quit in protest.<lb />It would have to be some<lb />sort of hybrid that involves mili-<lb />tary commissions that actually<lb />administer justice rather than just<lb />serve as kangaroo courts,? Tribe<lb /><lb />~said. It will have to both be and<lb /><lb />appear to be fundamentally fair<lb />in light of the circumstances. I<lb />think people are going to give an<lb />Obama administration the benefit<lb />of the doubt in that regard.?<lb />Some werenTt so sure.<lb />There would be concern<lb />about establishing a completely<lb />new system,? said Rep. Adam<lb />Schiff, D-Calif., a member of the<lb />House Judiciary Committee and<lb />former federal prosecutor who is<lb />aware of the discussions in the<lb />Obama camp. And in the sense<lb />that establishing a regimen of<lb />detention that includes American<lb />citizens and foreign nationals<lb />that takes place on U.S. soil and<lb /><lb />departs from the criminal justice<lb />system " trying to establish that<lb />would be very difficult.?<lb />~ Though a hybrid court may<lb />be unpopular, other advisers<lb />and Democrats involved in the<lb />Guantanamo Bay discussions say<lb />Obama has few options.<lb />Prosecuting all detainees<lb />in federal courts raises many<lb />problems. Evidence gathered<lb />through military interrogation<lb />or from intelligence sources<lb />might be thrown out. Defendants<lb />would have the right to confront<lb />witnesses, meaning undercover<lb />CIA officers or terrorist turncoats<lb />might have to take the stand, jeop-<lb /><lb />Guantanamo Bay prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.<lb /><lb />ardizing their cover and reveal-<lb />ing classified intelligence tactics.<lb /><lb />That means something dif-<lb /><lb />ferent would need to be done if<lb />detainees couldnTt be released or<lb />prosecuted in traditional courts.<lb />Exactly what remains unclear.<lb /><lb />1 donTt think we need to<lb />completely reinvent the wheel,<lb />but we need a better tribunal<lb />process that is more transparent,?<lb />Schiff said.<lb /><lb />According to three advis-<lb />ers participating in the process,<lb />Obama is expected to propose<lb /><lb />a new court system and may:<lb /><lb />appoint a committee to decide<lb /><lb />how such a court would operate. ,<lb /><lb />Some detainees likely would be<lb /><lb />~returned to the countries where<lb /><lb />they were first captured for fur-<lb /><lb />ther detention or rehabilitation.<lb />The rest could probably be pros-<lb />ecuted in U.S. criminal courts,<lb />one adviser said. All spoke on<lb />condition of anonymity to dis-<lb />cuss the ongoing talks, which<lb />have been private.<lb /><lb />One challenge will be figur-<lb />ing out what to do with the 90.<lb /><lb />or so Yemeni detainees " the<lb />largest group in the prison. The<lb />Bush administration has sought<lb />to negotiate the release of some<lb />of those detainees as part of<lb />a rehabilitation plan with the<lb />Yemeni government. But talks<lb />have so far been fruitless.<lb />Waleed Alshahari, who has<lb />been following Guantanamo<lb />issues for the Yemeni Embassy<lb />in Washington, said the plan<lb /><lb />MCT<lb /><lb />being discussed by the Obama<lb />team was an improvement<lb />over the current system. But he<lb />said he expects most detainees<lb />to be released rather than stand<lb />trial.<lb /><lb />Tf the U.S. ~government has<lb />any evidence against them, they<lb />would try them and put them in<lb />jail,? Alshahari said. But it has-<lb />been obvious they have nothing<lb />against them. That is why they<lb />have not faced trial.?<lb /><lb />Whatever Obama decides,<lb />he should move quickly, Tribe<lb />said.<lb /><lb />In reality and symbolically,<lb />the idea that we have people in<lb />legal black holes is an extremely<lb />serious black mark,? Or even<lb />that sometimes you have to wait for the rewards<lb />of your labor? |<lb /><lb />And where are we going to get all this money,<lb />anyway? Last time I checked, we were in a bit of<lb />a recession and, if schools have the piles of money<lb />to be handing out cash incentives for grades, why<lb />donTt they improve the facilities and programs to<lb />make school a place kids want to be instead of a<lb />place theyTre paid to go to?<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />JASON M. WALLACE<lb />THE EAst CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />ITm tired of watching pixilated clips of Sat-<lb />urday Night Live? in my free time. I wish that<lb />there was some way that I could keep myself from<lb />missing every new episode of South Park? with-<lb />out watching the reruns later. I have longed to see<lb />some of the Nickelodeon shows from my childhood<lb />again as well.<lb /><lb />~It seems that there is a simple solution to the<lb />problem: Put TV shows on the Internet. I donTt see<lb />why the networks keep their programs restricted to<lb />just television. Streaming TV on the Web would be<lb />the sensible idea to draw in more viewers.<lb /><lb />I would gladly pay a more expensive Internet<lb />access bill every month ifI could watch my favorite<lb />program anytime I wanted instead of having to pay<lb /><lb />a cable bill when.I rarely have a chance to watch -<lb /><lb />TV, or the schedule compatibility to catch new<lb />episodes or having to choose between two programs<lb />scheduled at the same time.<lb /><lb />Television is a medium of entertainment and<lb />information that will be around forever, but it needs<lb />to be as flexible as the Internet. All the networks<lb />need to put their programs, new and old, on a digital<lb />format and upload them to their own Web sites or<lb />to YouTube channels.<lb /><lb />There have been so many times that I hear about<lb />an interesting program, but then learn that ITve<lb />missed the first six episodes. When this happens<lb />I either have to keep my interest level in constant<lb />check until the network runs a recap marathon of<lb />the whole season before the finale or wait until the<lb />season is released on DVD.<lb /><lb />Well, when the marathon rolls around I'll be<lb />busy that day as well, and when the seasonTs DVD<lb />is released IT1l probably be saving my money to pay<lb />next monthTs rent and bills, including the worthless<lb />cable bill.<lb /><lb />I can listen to any music that has been recorded<lb /><lb />since the dawn of audio recording on the Web. »<lb /><lb />Netflix allows me to rent movies--new and old--on<lb />-DVD format. I can find articles that are decades<lb />old on different newspaper Web sites. However, I<lb /><lb />will never again see segments from 60 Minutes,? -<lb /><lb />the seventh Tree House of Horrors? from The<lb />Simpsons? or a one and time only special tribute<lb />to The Who on VH1. ITve essentially paid for all<lb /><lb />of these programs with my cable bill, but did not.<lb /><lb />have the chance to use them.<lb /><lb />The music industry learned that compact discs<lb />werenTt the only medium to sell their product and<lb />they have richly benefited from online music sales.<lb />You would think that the television networks would<lb />have done the same by now.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />WHATTS THAT?<lb />THE MARKET ?<lb /><lb />{ Your Procrastination Destination }<lb /><lb />OR SUST THE<lb />GENERAL SIATE<lb />OF THINGS 7 "<lb /><lb />TUESDAY NOVEMBER 11, 2008 4<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate Rants. Gosh.<lb /><lb />LetTs respect<lb />the division<lb /><lb />Get rid of religion in Washington<lb /><lb />ANDREA ROBERTSON<lb />THE East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />Religion and politics are two ideas that should:<lb />never intersect; however, we constantly see religion<lb />surfacing in the political arena.<lb /><lb />Through the First Amendment of the United<lb />StatesT constitution, we have our religious privi-<lb />leges protected from the government. We have been<lb />given the guarantee that under no circumstances<lb />will the U.S. government take away our right to<lb />practice the faith that we believe to be correct.<lb />If the government can give us this promise, then<lb />the church should stop imposing itself upon the<lb />government!<lb /><lb />President-elect Barack Obama received much<lb />opposition from many individuals due to their reli-<lb />gious beliefs. Catholics were instructed that they<lb />shouldnTt vote for him because he is pro-choice.<lb />That view has nothing to do with whether or not<lb />Obama would be an adequate leader;. that view<lb />has everything to do with taking away a womanTs<lb />right to choose.<lb /><lb />Citizens were also opposing Obama because of<lb /><lb />his Muslim background. In the political arena, we _<lb /><lb />never see discrimination against those who lead a<lb />Christian lifestyle, which Obama hds been doing<lb /><lb />since the 1980s. So, why is it OK to discriminate .<lb /><lb />against someone with a Muslim background? We<lb />are supposed to have a separation of church and<lb /><lb />_ state; therefore, religious beliefs shouldnTt even be<lb /><lb />brought into the equation.<lb /><lb />Take a look at Elizabeth Dole, who tried to :<lb /><lb />bring religion into her campaign ads. Her Godless<lb />America? ad against Kay Hagen seriously outraged<lb />me! Regardless of whether Hagen believes in God,<lb />she should not be thought to be an inadequate leader<lb />simply because of this. That is her choice; it is not<lb />the choice of other people to say that she, or anyone<lb />else, should believe a certain thing.<lb /><lb />Religion also sticks its nose where it doesnTt<lb />belong with the issue of homosexual commitment<lb />ceremonies. It isnTt right for a religious group to say<lb />that it is wrong for two people to pledge their lives<lb />to each other, especially when the commitment of<lb />two people involves more than religious beliefs<lb />" there is a lot of legal issues involved as well. If<lb />you spend 20 years of your life with someone and<lb />the relationship doesnTt work out, you deserve to<lb />have some kind of legal protection that will allow<lb />you to split things evenly, similar to what takes<lb />place during a divorce.<lb /><lb />People should be able to make their own<lb />choices, regardless of what anyone else believes.<lb />God gave us free-will, so the church needs to<lb />acknowledge that, instead of trying to control the<lb />population through control of the government. A<lb />good principle for those who have a problem with<lb />the supposed lack of God in our government is to<lb />teach your children what you believe is right. <lb />Features |<lb /><lb />{ Campus Scene }<lb /><lb />Did you know?<lb /><lb />Aries<lb /><lb />You may believe that you are willing<lb />to go deeper than usual as you share<lb />your feelings with someone special,<lb />but it may be hard to be anything other<lb />than positive today. This sounds like<lb />a wonderful situation -- and it may<lb />be -- yet there's a downside to it also.<lb /><lb />Taurus<lb /><lb />An intense person could play a<lb />significant role in your day, and although<lb />you might try to evade him or her at<lb />first, thereTs no need to run. Sure, you<lb />tend to enjoy a simpler approach to<lb />relationships, yet you now have the<lb /><lb />chance to form a friendship that can.<lb /><lb />open your mind and teach you much<lb />about yourself.<lb /><lb />Gemini<lb /><lb />The same normal routine of work that<lb />is often boring or even stifling seems to<lb />be just fine with you now. You may even<lb />enjoy yourself while meeting obligations<lb />that you sometimes try to avoid. Make<lb /><lb />- up your mind to remember exactly how<lb /><lb />you feel today so you can recreate this<lb />positive attitude sometime in the future<lb />when you aren't feeling as cheerful<lb />about things.<lb /><lb />Cancer<lb />Your creative energy is running rampant<lb /><lb />today, yet itTs up to you to figure out what<lb /><lb />to do with it. Whatever you choose to<lb />start, donTt be overly conservative in<lb />your approach. Taking a risk could pay<lb />off beyond your dreams now, so be bold<lb />and daring in the expression of what's in<lb />your heart. DonTt let fear get in the way<lb />of what matters most.<lb /><lb />Leo<lb /><lb />Others may think they know you, but<lb />today even your close friends and family<lb />might not fully understand how you're<lb />feeling. It's not that you are purposefully<lb />hiding anything, nor are you in a bad<lb />mood. ItTs just that your emotions are<lb />running deeper than anyone realizes<lb />and you don't feel obliged to disclose<lb />something that would make you feel<lb />more vulnerable now.<lb /><lb />Virgo<lb /><lb />You can score some extra points with<lb />a loved one today, but it wonTt happen<lb />by plotting and calculating your actions.<lb />Unrestrained spontaneity is your key<lb />to being appreciated, so itTs crucial to<lb /><lb />simply stay as present as youcaneach_ : : :<lb />~: students, and eventually anyone with an e-mail address.<lb /><lb />moment throughout the day.<lb /><lb />Libra<lb /><lb />You can see what's happening today<lb />from a new and refreshing point of view.<lb />Your original ideas may surprise others<lb />at work because you have temporarily<lb />broken out of the box and seem to be<lb />operating from a unique perspective. If<lb />you have an opinion, don't hold back<lb />for fear of being negatively judged. Do<lb />yourself a favor now and let everyone<lb />know what you are thinking.<lb /><lb />Scorpio<lb /><lb />You may be determined to add<lb />something new to your daily routine<lb />today, but you could get so obsessed<lb />with this idea that you get stuck in your<lb />own thinking. Accepting guidance from<lb />peers might not be easy for you, yet itTs<lb />a smart strategy at this time. Not only<lb />can they act as catalysts, but they will<lb />also appreciate your willingness to take<lb />their advice into account.<lb /><lb />Sagittarius<lb /><lb />Even if today means that you must go<lb />back to work, your inner world needn't<lb />shut down. In fact, you can embark on<lb />a spiritual journey now while taking care<lb />of your daily chores or engaging in your<lb />professional activities without anyone<lb />else even realizing it. Be practical and<lb />keep up outward appearances, even<lb />while traveling to distant galaxies in<lb />your mind.<lb /><lb />Capricorn<lb /><lb />Others marvel at your ability to hold on<lb />to your dreams now, even if your job is<lb />less than ideal. ItTs almost as if only you<lb />can see a Clear and direct path that will<lb />reliably transform you from Cinderella<lb />into the princess of the ball. DonTt let<lb />anyone elseTs negativity get in your way,<lb />for even your most unrealistic bee may<lb />be within reach.<lb /><lb />Aquarius<lb /><lb />You may need to go head-to-head<lb />with someone at work now in order to<lb />clarify your responsibilities while also<lb />maintaining some of your freedom.<lb />Don't be afraid to be very clear about<lb />what you can do and what is beyond<lb />your ability. Even if you are negotiating<lb />with your boss, rather than a co-worker,<lb />you have a good chance to get what you<lb />need. Just make sure you know when to<lb />back down, if necessary. Nothing will be<lb />gained by pushing too hard.<lb /><lb />Pisces<lb /><lb />Your self-esteem is high now and you<lb />can be quite eager to take the next<lb />step in whatever work you are doing.<lb />However, someone may rain on your<lb />parade with harsh words or resist your<lb />actions in some way. Fortunately, you<lb />are in a strong enough frame of mind<lb />today that you are able to take criticism<lb />constructively and put it to good use.<lb /><lb />The ups and downs<lb /><lb />TUESDAY NOVEMBER 11, 2008 5<lb /><lb />your Facebook<lb /><lb />3 Student Derek Schrader browses his Facebook account.<lb /><lb />LAKEISHA GOODMAN<lb />Tue East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />When Shenida Adams first came to ECU, social networking sites were the new it<lb /><lb />: thing? to do. To keep up with the latest craze, she immediately took a part in this new<lb />: cyber world.<lb /><lb />Tt seems cool to have a Web page that can reflect on my own unique individuality,?<lb /><lb />: said Adams.<lb /><lb />Among the many social networking sites, Black Planet, MySpace, and others, Face-<lb /><lb />: book became the most popular to many students on ECUTs campus. The main appeal was<lb />: that Facebook was exclusively for college students. .<lb /><lb />It was a great way to keep in touch with friends who went to different schools,?<lb /><lb />Adams said.<lb /><lb />However, as Facebook became even more popular, it became open to high school<lb /><lb />Lorna Poe, a junior at ECU, initially joined one of the social networking communities<lb /><lb />: to keep up with old friends.<lb /><lb />While she likes how the sites keep track of all of her friendsT birthdays, Poe is a little<lb /><lb />: wary of how open things are.<lb /><lb />The mini-feeds [on Facebook] tell way too much,? she said, referring to the list of<lb /><lb />individual changes that friends have made on their profiles. These informational updates<lb />: can range from pictures added, relationship status changes and a new blog post.<lb /><lb />Potential employers and others who hold authoritative positions are aware of these<lb /><lb />: sites, and are doing checks on potential employees or subordinates. Investigative reports<lb />: conducted by CBS News found that about 20 percent of employers typically scan online<lb />: profiles, including pictures on social networking sites. By simply typing in oneTs name on<lb />: Google or other search engines, has made it easier for employers to find these profiles.<lb /><lb />Adams has mixed feelings about companies checking the profiles of potential employees.<lb /><lb />{<lb /><lb />NICHOLAS THIGPEN | THE EAST CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />Student couple John Allen Hinds and Shelly Carson share a date.<lb /><lb />AKELA YARN<lb />THE East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />Dating. It can be exciting, awkward and so much more. The rules of dating are so com-<lb /><lb />: plex that not even Merriam-Webster could come up with a concrete definition.<lb /><lb />But, while various definitions to describe relationships and dating, change between<lb /><lb />: generations and individuals, it is still a ritual practiced by almost everyone today.<lb /><lb />While each person has their own specific preferences on what to look for in dating<lb /><lb /> someone, some characteristics of a date-worthy person can involve physical appearance<lb />: and personality.<lb /><lb />However, ECU student Antwan Staley looks for a little more in his potential dates.<lb />How a person treats others is a big thing for me; you can always tell this when going<lb /><lb />: to a restaurant when you think, ~How does she treat the server?T? said Staley. Of course,<lb />: intelligence is huge too, because you donTt want to be with someone that canTt carry on a<lb />: conversation or someone who does not know what is going on in the world.?<lb /><lb />Traditional roles are even favored when asking for dates.<lb />I was raised in the South, and [was] always taught that a gentleman does the asking,<lb /><lb />but when asking [he] does it with proper manners,? said student Trey Kriger.<lb /><lb />However, the asking part doesnTt always have to start with the guy. While the roles can<lb /><lb />: be reversed, fear of being turned down is a reason that both male and female students do<lb />: not ask out the opposite sex.<lb /><lb />es Es Be<lb />STAFF PHOTO | THE EAST CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />People should have their privacy rights, but then again a company shouldnTt want<lb />an employee who reflects the company to have explicit or inappropriate things on their<lb />profile pages,? Adams said.<lb /><lb />While many may feel that what is on their profile should not be a problem, under<lb />the USA PATRIOT Act, certain companies have the legal right to search the profiles of<lb />potential employees.<lb /><lb />The USA PATRIOT Act, which President George W. Bush signed in 2001 to go into<lb />effect, is aimed to allow law enforcement to go through e-mail, telephone ale and<lb />the like to cut down on the attempts at terrorism.<lb /><lb />CNN lists a few DoTs and DonTts to keep in mind the next time you log onto a social<lb />networking site.<lb /><lb />e DonTt talk negatively Asie current and/or previous employers. ItTs not a good<lb />thing to do at an actual job interview and itTs definitely not good to post blogs about how<lb />you hate your boss.<lb /><lb />» DonTt forget that others can see your friends. Be aware of the posts that your<lb />friends may put on your page. If someoneTs profile name contains explicit language, they<lb />should not be listed as a top friend for potential employees to-see.<lb /><lb />e Do clean~ up your profile. DonTt wait until youTve left a job interview to clean<lb />your profile page. Review your pictures and quotes now to see if anything needs to be _<lb />updated or taken off.<lb /><lb />e Do join groups. Joining groups are a great way to network. However be careful<lb />of what groups you join. Employers would rather have someone whoTs a part of a group<lb />that reflects hard work and dedication than one that tells how you can hold all of your<lb />liquor.<lb /><lb />° In this new day and age, someoneTs profile i isa reflection of who they are, so<lb />be sure to keep it up with care.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />features@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />of the dating world<lb /><lb />~ NICHOLAS THIGPEN | THE EAST CAROLINIAN<lb />Student couple Molly Long and Derrick Davis have a date at a local bowling alley.<lb /><lb />You can never tell if they are interested in you or not, so being asked is easier,? said<lb />student Megan Reavis. ,<lb /><lb />But while traditional methods can be used for asking, the actual scene of the date has<lb />changed, according to some students. Opting out of the often traditional dinner and a<lb />movie? night, many prefer to casually interact with one another to get a feel for someoneTs<lb />personality. For some, hanging out? is the informal process of getting to know another<lb />person, while dating can be deemed more intimate and personal.<lb /><lb />Hanging out comes just before dating,? said student Chelsea Reich. Staley said, horrified that his friendTs girlfriend ald. set him<lb />up with a girl expecting a baby. My friend and me just looked at each other like, Why<lb />would she set me up with a pregnant [female]?T?<lb /><lb />Even the most obscure or non-traditional dates can be successful. <lb />Sports<lb /><lb />Pirates take control of East Division<lb /><lb />Most Valuable<lb />Pirate<lb /><lb />The Turning Point<lb /><lb />Marshall shouldn't have pushed<lb />ECU to overtime Saturday, but<lb />when it did, the Herd couldn't<lb /><lb />capitalize. The Pirates forced<lb /><lb />Marshall to go three-and-out on<lb />its overtime series and when the<lb />Herd tried for a field goal, kicker<lb />Tyler Warner missed his 42-yard<lb />attempt wide right. ECU then<lb />pat the ball, and just like the<lb /><lb />llowing week against UCF, ran<lb />the ball three straight downs to<lb />gel optimal field position for a<lb /><lb />en Hartman field goal attempt.<lb />Hartman didnTt disappoint as his<lb />27-yard attempt sailed through<lb />the uprights to give the Pirates<lb />their second straight overtime<lb />win--and most importantly--<lb />breathing room in the Conference<lb />USA East Division race.<lb /><lb />- What it Means<lb /><lb />With a dramatic overtime victory<lb /><lb />over Marshall, ECU finds itself ©<lb /><lb />~ in the driver's seat of the East<lb />Division of Conference USA. The<lb />Pirates, who have been so close<lb />_ the last two seasons in clinching<lb />~ the East division, are practically<lb />assured the division title with<lb />technically a two-game lead<lb />over Marshall (since they own<lb />the tiebreaker), with three C-USA<lb />games left. All ECU needs in<lb />order to clinch the East Division<lb />title this upcoming weekend is<lb />a win over Southern Miss and a<lb />Marshall loss to UCF.<lb /><lb />ECU wins second<lb />consecutive OT game<lb />-. JARED JACKSON<lb /><lb />THE East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />Ben Hartman did it again.<lb /><lb />ECUTs junior kicker boomed<lb />a 27-yard field goal on the<lb />PiratesT first possession of over-<lb />time to defeat Conference USA<lb />East division rival. Marshall,<lb />19-16, in front of ahomecoming<lb />crowd of 43,515--the seventh<lb />largest ever in Dowdy-Ficklen<lb />Stadium history.<lb /><lb />Hartman also made field<lb />goals from 31, 51 and 21 yards<lb />in the game, but failed to win the<lb />game for the Pirates in regula-<lb />tion when he missed a 42-yarder<lb />wide left,as time expired.<lb /><lb />Tt should have been over at<lb />the end of four quarters,? Hart-<lb />man said. Luckily the defense<lb />makes a stand and they missed<lb />a field goal in overtime, and we<lb />win the game,? Hartman said.<lb /><lb />Hartman isnTt a stranger to<lb />this situation. His game-winner<lb />came on the heels of making a<lb />39-yarder to beat UCF last week-<lb />end in overtime. The deciding<lb /><lb />field goal against the Thundering ~<lb /><lb />Herd was also the kickerTs fourth<lb />career game-winner.<lb />Anybody that competes<lb />[knows] you always want the<lb />ball at end of the game to be the<lb />deciding factor,? Hartman said.<lb />Prior to kickoff, ECU intro-<lb />duced a new look for their<lb /><lb />mascot, Pee Dee. But once the .<lb /><lb />Pirates hit the gridiron, they<lb />resorted back to their effective<lb />game plan that proved to, at<lb />times, overbear the Thundering<lb />Herd.<lb /><lb />(This was] a great win for<lb /><lb />the program,? ECU coach Skip<lb /><lb />Holtz said. This was a big game<lb />as far as what we are trying to do<lb />in the big picture of things and I<lb />was just really proud of the way<lb />the players hung in there; it was<lb /><lb />a great team win.?<lb /><lb />With the win, ECU has lifted<lb />a huge monkey off its back. The<lb />Pirates now sit in the driverTs<lb /><lb />seat of the East Division. The<lb /><lb />position is not unfamiliar ter-<lb />ritory for the Pirates, who in<lb />the last two years have blown<lb />a chance at competing in the C-<lb />USA title game with late season<lb />losses to Rice (2006) and Mar-<lb />shall last year.<lb /><lb />But with the victory against<lb />the Thundering Herd, the Pirates<lb />have what can technically be<lb />described as a two-game lead.<lb />ECU now owns one more C-USA<lb />victory than Marshall, as well as<lb />the tiebreaker between the two.<lb /><lb />Defense was the story of the<lb />day for ECU, as the Pirates were<lb />able to hold the Thundering Herd<lb />to 286 yards of total offense.<lb />On each of MarshallTs first two<lb /><lb />drives, ECU freshman corner-<lb /><lb />back Emanuel Davis picked off<lb />the HerdTs freshman quarterback<lb />Mark Cann.<lb /><lb />Our mindset this week was<lb /><lb />to just go out there and play one<lb />play at atime and just get the job<lb />done,? said Davis. Those two<lb />big plays at the beginning of the<lb />game just gave us momentum<lb />and just carried us throughout.?.<lb /><lb />Did it ever.<lb /><lb />Holtz said SaturdayTs game<lb />was the defenseTs best perfor-<lb />mance of the season. The Pirates<lb />held Cann to 13-of-29 passing<lb />for 137 and two touchdowns,<lb />along with his early intercep-<lb />tions. Marshall ran for 167<lb /><lb />yards on the ground behind 36.<lb /><lb />carries.<lb /><lb />For a while, it seated like<lb />the Thundering Herd would be<lb />denied a touchdown, but they<lb />opened up the second half with<lb />a 10-play scoring drive that<lb /><lb />concluded with a Cann 7-yard |<lb /><lb />strike to junior tight end Cody<lb />Slate, cutting the ECU lead to<lb /><lb />13-9. The HerdTs point after -<lb /><lb />attempt failed.<lb /><lb />Cann and Slate hooked up<lb />again on a 34-yard touchdown<lb />with 1:21 left in regulation: to<lb />tie the game at 16, which would<lb />be the score at the end of regu-<lb />lation. The Thundering HerdTs<lb />score came after an ECU punt<lb />of 15 yards. .<lb /><lb />The ECU offense was effi-<lb /><lb />{ ECU's Inside Source }<lb /><lb />TUESDAY NOVEMBER 11, 2008 7<lb /><lb />cient and got the job done once<lb />again, this time with senior quar-<lb />terback Patrick Pinkney leading<lb />the Pirates the whole game.<lb /><lb />Pinkney threw for 287 yards<lb />and one touchdown on 26-of-37<lb />passing. PinkneyTs lone touch-<lb />down came with 12 seconds<lb />remaining in the first half, a<lb />5-yard fade pass to senior tight<lb />end Davon Drew that gave ECU<lb />a 13-3 lead at halftime.<lb /><lb />It was all about execution,?<lb /><lb />~said Pinkney. When you trust in<lb /><lb />a receiver, and the receiver trusts<lb /><lb />_ in your quarterback, itTs all about<lb /><lb />making plays for each other. We<lb /><lb />did that [on that play] and it was<lb /><lb />a big score for us.?<lb />While Holtz was pleased<lb /><lb />-with PinkneyTs performance, he<lb /><lb />is still looking for some consis-<lb />tency among the offense.<lb /><lb />T thought Patrick played<lb />a great football game,? Holtz<lb />said. He threw some great<lb />passes hanging in there, but I<lb />would like to have an offensive<lb />performance where we put a run-<lb />ning game and a passing game<lb />together to where we can do<lb />some things and turn and score<lb />some points.?<lb /><lb />Sophomore Norman Whitley<lb />was the leading rusher for the<lb /><lb />Pirates, with 72 yards on the.<lb /><lb />ground on 23 attempts.<lb /><lb />ECU now must prove it can<lb />handle sitting at the top of the<lb />East Division as it travels to<lb />Hattiesburg, Miss. next week<lb />to take on bitter C-USA rival<lb />Southern Miss.<lb /><lb />No team is going to take<lb />us lightly,? Pinkney said. We<lb />just have to take it one week at<lb />a time.?<lb /><lb />The bullTs- -eye is placed once<lb />again on ECU, not for, being<lb />the one-time giant killer as it<lb />was to start the season, but for<lb />sitting on top of C-USATs East<lb />Division and creeping toward a<lb /><lb />-conference title game berth. The<lb /><lb />Pirates surely have a difficult<lb />task on their hands--but history<lb />has never been so close.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />ROBYN CATES | THE EAST CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />Davon Drew (3) catches a touchdown right before halftime.<lb /><lb />Opinion: C-USA West is aes<lb /><lb />RONNIE WOODWARD<lb />THE East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />Field goals and defense donTt<lb /><lb />win Conference USA champion-<lb /><lb />ships. The teams in C-USATs<lb />West Division have figured that<lb />out. The teams in the East are a<lb />little behind the curve, which<lb />was evident at Dowdy-Ficklen<lb /><lb />Stadium Saturday. T<lb /><lb />- In a game that featured the<lb />EastTs two best teams, an aggres-<lb />sive defense and conservative<lb />offense carried ECU to a 19-16<lb />overtime victory.<lb /><lb />Ben Hartman kicked four<lb />field goals--including the game-<lb /><lb />* winner in the extra period--and<lb /><lb />ECUTs defense limited Marshall<lb />to 137 passing yards. It was the<lb />second-straight week that ECU<lb />won with defense and a clutch<lb />field goal, which is rare of most<lb />C-USA games.<lb /><lb />The conferenceTs East Divi-<lb /><lb />sion is starting to resemble a<lb />conference like the Big Ten,<lb /><lb />- something ECU coach Skip<lb /><lb />Holtz has adjusted to.<lb />WeTve been going at this the<lb />Big Ten way the last couple of<lb /><lb />weeks. With some of the<lb /><lb />injuries weTve had [on offense], ..<lb />I donTt feel like some of these<lb />younger players have been ready .. .<lb /><lb />to be thrown at the wolves and<lb />go at it.?<lb /><lb />SaturdayTs game was a battle<lb />for East Division supremacy,<lb />as the two teams entered tied<lb />for first place in the division.<lb />Supremacy for the entire confer-<lb />ence might already be decided,<lb />however. That title currently<lb />belongs to Tulsa, and it will be<lb /><lb />very tough for a C-USA East.<lb /><lb />team to take that away.<lb /><lb />Tulsa, which boasts the "<lb /><lb />nationTs top offense, has scored<lb />45 points or more in four of<lb /><lb />its five conference games this<lb /><lb />season. You run<lb />it, punt it away and count<lb />_ on your defense,?<lb />? ap notes<lb /><lb />ECU FOOTBALL HEAD COACH<lb /><lb />total of the season has been<lb />30. The PiratesT low-scoring<lb />style has worked against teams<lb />like Marshall and UCF, but itTs<lb />hard to win that way against<lb /><lb />~teams from the West--which was :<lb /><lb />evident in ECUTs 41-24 loss to<lb />Houston earlier this season.<lb />Despite the contrasting<lb /><lb />styles within C-USA, ECUTs<lb /><lb />players believe they can win the<lb />conference with defense. |<lb />Defense wins champion-<lb />ships,? said ECU safety Van<lb />Eskridge. I donTt think itTs<lb /><lb />any different in Conference<lb /><lb />USA. If the defense continues<lb /><lb />to play the way weTve been<lb /><lb />playing, we should be fine<lb />because we know we have guys<lb />on the other side of the ball<lb />who are going to make plays<lb /><lb />~ eventually.?<lb /><lb />If ECU is going to be<lb />crowned as C-USATs cham-<lb />pion, it will have to find ways<lb /><lb />to score more points. Whatever<lb /><lb />team represents the West will be<lb /><lb />led by its offense and should be |<lb /><lb />able-to control the pace of the<lb />championship game, which will<lb />be played Dec. 6.<lb /><lb />The difference in style is<lb />glaring when you break down<lb />the statistics of C-USATs teams.<lb />The top four scoring offenses<lb /><lb />in C-USA are all made up of<lb /><lb />teams from the West Division,<lb />with Tulsa leading the way at<lb /><lb />52 points per game. In scoring<lb />defense, the East claims four of<lb />the first five spots, with ECU in<lb />first at 21.2 points per game.<lb />The problem for the East<lb />~teams is that the teams from the<lb />West haveT found more success<lb />with their style of play.<lb />Defense does win cham-<lb />pionships, but C-USA is the<lb />exception to that rule. The<lb />records of C-USATs teams indi-<lb />cate that teamsT offenses usually<lb />win games. In the West Divi-<lb />sion, four teams currently have<lb /><lb />- conference records above .500.<lb /><lb />On the other side, only ECU and<lb />Marshall have winning confer-<lb />ence records.<lb /><lb />For some reason, the confer-<lb />enceTs best offenses reside in the<lb />West and the conferenceTs best<lb />defenses reside in the East.<lb /><lb />In a conference that has been<lb />defined by offense, ITll take the<lb />West.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />KELLEN HOLTZMAN<lb />Tue East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />The ECU Ice Hockey team<lb />bounced back from a thrashing<lb />from the sticks of ACHA Divi-<lb />sion II powerhouse Kennesaw<lb />State by dismantling Duke on<lb /><lb />_ Friday night.<lb /><lb />The Pirates (6-4, 3-0). con-<lb />trolled the puck from the. start<lb /><lb />-and withstood a brief third "<lb />period rally to win 5-1 and earn "<lb /><lb />a season sweep over the Blue »~<lb />well,? said Lipke.
