Less than 50<lb />years ago, whites and blacks couldnt sit in the<lb />same part of a city bus in many parts of the coun-<lb /><lb />the city every night, people are continually being<lb />wooed into forgetting their evenings. Although I<lb />am legally old enough to drink, I often find myself<lb />longing to do something other than go to a bar or<lb />house party.<lb /><lb />I find it incredibly difficult to believe<lb />that I am the only person who feels this way.<lb />Ive seen organizations associated with the univer-<lb />sity that offer sober alternatives, but they require<lb />some sort of skill or religious affiliation. Then I<lb />stumbled across hammered.org, which is a chapter<lb />organization that avoids preaching about drinking<lb />woes, but provides fun for students who simply<lb />dont feel like drinking.<lb /><lb />Universities across the nation participate in<lb />. hammered.orgs programs, but North Carolina<lb />doesnt have a single chapter. This type of organi-<lb />zation would be awesome for students who want<lb />to get to know new people and connect with stu-<lb />dents who share similar interests. Maybe there are<lb />people who can play hours of board games, cards<lb />or Wii: Perhaps groups of people want to go see<lb />movies, try a new restaurant or start up a game of<lb />dodge ball. Because | live off campus, a Hammered<lb />chapter would give me the chance to develop social<lb />networks with people on campus, without making<lb />anew drinking buddy.<lb /><lb />The hammered.org concept may sound like<lb />a bore to some, but consider the side effects of<lb />drinking before slamming the people who may be<lb />interested in getting Hammered.? .<lb /><lb />Dont be mistaken, I am not chastising those<lb />who choose to drink, but simply suggesting an<lb />alternative to alcohol consumption. At the very<lb />least, consider the risks associated with drinking<lb />before accepting your next red cup. If there seems<lb />to be any interest in starting a Hammered chapter<lb />at ECU, it would be an awesome addition to the<lb />activities currently offered on campus that I would<lb />back 100 percent.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Music scene<lb />doesnt deliver<lb /><lb />JASON M. But does his win<lb />signify a change in prejudice attitudes in our<lb />country? Have we evolved as a nation?<lb /><lb />According to an MSNBC exit poll released<lb />yesterday, 43 percent of eligible white voters in<lb />the United States voted for Obama.<lb /><lb />Does that mean that that almost half of the<lb />country has no issues with race? Or does that<lb />mean that 43 percent of the U.S. doesnt care about<lb />the color of their president but do care about race<lb />in other contexts? .<lb /><lb />I think the latter. I think that a brilliant, elo-<lb />quent, sincere half-white, half-Kenyan man won<lb />the hearts of the majority of Americans. But I<lb />dont think that bigotry in America is on its way<lb />out. I think that we have just begun the journey<lb />of healing and restoration between races in our<lb />country.<lb /><lb />I feel like I can talk about this, because I am<lb />white and engaged to a black man, and I have<lb />seen the nasty looks and heard the comments. <lb />12<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ SPORTS<lb /><lb />ECU swimmers establish confidence<lb /><lb />SEAN LABAR<lb />THE East CAROLINIAN .<lb /><lb />Coach ~Rick Kobe is con-<lb />fident and determined as the<lb />ECU swim team heads into the<lb />midpoint of its season with toug]<lb />competition in the latter part of<lb />the schedule.<lb /><lb />With a 9-2 overall record this<lb />- season, the Pirates are defining<lb />themselves as a force to be reck-<lb />oned with in the upcoming ACC<lb />and SEC conferences.<lb /><lb />The Pirates won three of<lb />four dual meets last weekend,<lb />defeating Georgetown and<lb />Towson. At McCarthy pool<lb />against Georgetown, the Pirates<lb />set seven records, a feat that has<lb />never happened before at ECUs<lb />home pool.<lb /><lb />Setting those records was<lb />good for our team,? said Kobe.<lb />The wins over the weekend<lb />solidified the teams confi-<lb />dence.?<lb /><lb />Senior Amanda: Duncan<lb />holds one of the three records<lb />set by the Pirates. Duncan teamed<lb /><lb />with Kelsey Brosi, Jessica Brin-<lb />kley and Jenna Stewart to set the<lb />record in the 200-yard medley<lb />relay. Rachel Blue and Kali Gas-<lb />kill then joined Duncan and Brosi<lb />in a record-setting 200-yard<lb />freestyle performance. Duncan<lb /><lb /> then won the 100-yard butterfly<lb /><lb />with a time of 56.62.<lb />The men dominated George-<lb />town and Towson. Sophomore<lb /><lb />Thiago Cavalcanti led the way<lb /><lb />with a record-breaking time of<lb />1:43.03 in the 200-meter free-<lb />style.<lb /><lb />With an impressive meet now<lb />behind them, Kobe feels his team<lb />has good morale heading into a<lb />critical part of the season.<lb /><lb />We have been swimming<lb />really fast,? said Kobe. Every-<lb />one has been swimming great,<lb />even the freshmen have been<lb />a crucial part of the team this<lb />year.?<lb /><lb />Kobe considers a victory<lb />against the College of Charleston<lb />this weekend crucial as the team<lb />prepares to battle tough competi-<lb />tion at the Gamecock Invitational<lb />in Columbia, S.C. the following<lb /><lb />TRAVIS BARTLETT |<lb /><lb />weekend. The Invitational will<lb />host an experienced blend of<lb />nationally ranked teams coming<lb />from the ACC and SCC.<lb /><lb />We are excited about com-<lb />peting against those ACC and<lb />SEC teams,? said Kobe. Beating<lb />those nationally ranked teams<lb />would be great.?<lb /><lb />The outstanding start for the<lb />Pirates could prove to be the<lb />defining factor in predicting how<lb />the remainder of the season will<lb />play out. Kobe has high expec-<lb />tations for his team, and. feels it<lb />carries the skill and maturity to<lb />compete with teams at any col-<lb />legiate level.<lb /><lb />We feel like we can win<lb />every meet; they are all so big,?<lb />he said. We are pretty happy<lb />with losing just two...we are<lb /><lb />hoping to have the girls be 5-1 "<lb /><lb />and the guys be 6-1.?<lb /><lb />For the Pirate swim team,<lb />a long, tough road is ahead, .a<lb />challenge that Kobe is ready to<lb />face head on.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />The ECU swim team will try and continue its momentum in Greenville this weekend.<lb /><lb />THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2008<lb /><lb />Read, Rant, Share.<lb />WAVAVVAV.VA | =(to}) Rots) me) | lalts|amerelan)<lb /><lb />at bss -lidae, LELE<lb /><lb />DUWSAUW oe ee<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />eee joa<lb /><lb />Days fas Lunch, Biancr & Fiestas!<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Suite D<lb />Greenville, NC 27834<lb /><lb />2140 West Arlington Blvd.<lb /><lb />EASTERN CAROLINA<lb /><lb />SPECIALISTS<lb /><lb />Christopher J.
