The ECU Under-<lb />graduate Student Senate is the body<lb />in charge of making these decisions<lb />on behalf of students, and they are<lb />seeking more student input.<lb /><lb />The Undergraduate Student<lb />Senate is the legislative branch of<lb />the Student Government Associa-<lb />tion. They control the allotment of<lb />a portion of student fees. This<lb />money can be used for various<lb />projects around campus, as well as<lb />used to help fund student organiza-<lb />tions. Their purpose is to represent<lb />student interests; however many<lb />students are unaware of the power<lb />of the Student Senate, or the power<lb />that students have to. direct their<lb />efforts and spending.<lb /><lb />Student senate president<lb />Mathew Burke says the group is<lb />looking for more student involve-<lb />ment, and working on making<lb />themselves more visible to the<lb /><lb />TodayTs<lb />Carolinian<lb /><lb />News<lb />Opinion.<lb />Features<lb />Sports<lb />Classifieds<lb /><lb />campus community.<lb /><lb />oUndergraduate Student Senate<lb />is the direct representation of the<lb />student body at the administrative<lb />level,? said Burke.<lb /><lb />Burke says their goal is to<lb />address studentsT needs and to<lb />better their student experience.<lb />There are representatives from<lb />the different colleges and schools<lb />on campus, as: well as class rep-<lb />resentatives are part of the student<lb />senate. Burke says he often talks to<lb />members of various organizations<lb />and sororities and fraternities to<lb />get their ideas on the things that<lb /><lb />: affect them.<lb /><lb />oWe are here for your needs<lb />and concerns,? said Burke. oWe<lb /><lb />would love your input at any<lb /><lb />point and time.?<lb /><lb />One of the jobs of the senate<lb />is to try to find issues that need<lb />to be addressed on campus, but<lb />students can also bring their con-<lb />cerns to a meeting, or directly to<lb />a student senator. As president,<lb />Burke oversees the senate and<lb />its meetings, and is not. allowed<lb />to offer his opinion or cast.a<lb />vote on issues. But he encour-<lb /><lb />Pirate Rant<lb />of the Day<lb /><lb />3 | used to get high on life,<lb />: but eventually | built up a<lb />; tolerance.<lb /><lb />ages the student senators to get<lb />student feedback and bring it<lb />to meetings.<lb /><lb />oT encourage my senators to go<lb />out and look for problems, look for<lb />issues, talk to students [and] get out<lb />there,? he said.<lb /><lb />Members of the student<lb />senate are looking to do just<lb />that. Emmanuel Wilder, student<lb />senator and junior computer sci-<lb />ence major, recently transferred<lb />from Western Carolina Univer-<lb />sity where he also served on the<lb />student senate. Wilder. said he<lb />wants to be involved with the<lb />student body so that people ~feel<lb />comfortable approaching him<lb />with their concerns.<lb /><lb />oT want [students] to talk to<lb />me and to say, ~I think this is<lb />messed up, how are you going<lb />to go about changing it??<lb /><lb />Wilder, who was sworn in as<lb />a new student senator yesterday,<lb />has been researching past resolu-<lb />tions and is optimistic about what<lb />the student senate can accom-<lb />plish on the studentsT behalf. He<lb />believes that the environment at<lb />ECU is more structured than at<lb /><lb />News<lb /><lb />: Barack ObamaTs grand-<lb />: mother passes away just<lb />(one day peloie Election<lb />: Day. Read the full story in-<lb />side.<lb /><lb />a<lb /><lb />page 2<lb /><lb />his previous school.<lb /><lb />oThe initial feel that I have is<lb />that the set-up they have is more<lb />effective and more in favor of the<lb />students,? Wilder said.<lb /><lb />Burke says one reason he<lb />hopes to get more. student involve-<lb />ment is so more students will see<lb />what is happening in student gov-<lb />ernment. He hopes to promote an<lb />open atmosphere in which students<lb />feel comfortable with the legisla-<lb />tive process.<lb /><lb />During their meetings, the<lb />senate addresses bills and resolu-<lb />tions. A bill is an issue that the<lb />student senate can vote on and<lb />handle themselves. A resolution<lb />is something they would like to<lb />see done, but requires approval,<lb />cooperation or financial assistance<lb />from the administration or other<lb />departments on campus.<lb /><lb />When legislation in the form<lb />of a bill or resolution is introduced,<lb />a senate member brings the issue<lb />forward at a meeting. After doing<lb />his or her research, the senator<lb />drafts legislation and presents it to<lb />the group. After the first reading it<lb />is sent to the appropriate commit-<lb /><lb />tee to be reviewed. The committee<lb />makes a definitive statement about<lb />what is to be done, and does more<lb />research in conjunction with the<lb />senator who presented the legisla-<lb />tion. The committee may make<lb />revisions before they bring it back<lb />to the senate.<lb /><lb />When the legislation is bibiich<lb />back to the floor the committee is<lb />allowed to talk about it in a non-<lb />debatable question and answer ses-<lb />sion. Senators are only allowed to<lb />ask questions and the committee is<lb />allowed to respond. The legislation<lb />then goes to a debate period. There<lb />are 10 minute rounds of debate,<lb />which are governed by RobertTs<lb />Rules of Order. Each round con-<lb />sists of five alternating affirmative<lb />and negative arguments, limited<lb /><lb />-to one minute each. A two-thirds<lb /><lb />majority can vote to extend the<lb />debate if necessary.<lb /><lb />If an amendment is offered<lb />the legislation goes back to com-<lb />mittee. If not, it goes to a vote. If<lb />approved it goes before the SGA<lb />president who has three options.<lb />He can choose to approve, veto<lb />or delay the issue. If he waits ten<lb /><lb />Features<lb /><lb />: Election night is the per- :<lb />: fect time to party. If he vetoes,<lb />it then goes back to the senate<lb />for revision.<lb /><lb />At this point the legislation<lb />is no longer in the hands of the<lb />student government. Some reso-<lb />lutions, such as those concerning<lb />academic policy, must go before<lb />the faculty senate. Others must<lb />go before administration in the<lb />area of interest. The measure can<lb />then be approved or sent back<lb />to the senate with suggestions<lb />for changes.<lb /><lb />- Students are welcomed at<lb />meetings, and the. senate has<lb />recently included an open forum<lb />in which students can ask ques-<lb />tions or present their opinions on<lb />issues being discussed. They can<lb />also present new issues that they<lb />would like the senate to research.<lb />Meetings are held Mondays at<lb />5 p.m. in the Mendenhall Great<lb />Rooms. Their<lb />daughter, Stanley Ann, was born<lb />in 1942. After several moves<lb />to and from California, Texas,<lb />Washington and Kansas, Stanley<lb />DunhamTs job landed the family<lb />in Hawaii.<lb /><lb />Many of.<lb /><lb />It was there that Stanley<lb />Ann later met and fell in love<lb />with ObamaTs father, a Kenyan<lb />named Barack Hussein Obama,<lb />Sr. They met in Russian class at<lb />the University of Hawaii. Their<lb />son was born in August 1961,<lb />but the marriage didnTt last long.<lb />She later married an Indonesian,<lb />Lolo Soetoro, another university<lb />student she met in Hawaii. -<lb /><lb />Obama moved to Indonesia<lb />with his mother and stepfather at<lb />age six. But in 1971, her mother<lb />sent him back to Hawaii to live<lb />with her parents. He stayed with<lb /><lb />the Dunhams until he graduated<lb /><lb />from high school in 1979.<lb /><lb />- In his autobiography, Obama<lb />wrote fondly of playing basket-<lb />ball on a court below his grand-<lb />parentsT 10th-floor Honolulu<lb />apartment, and looking up to see<lb /><lb />his grandmother watching.<lb /><lb />It was the same apartment<lb />Obama visited on annual holi-<lb />day trips to Hawaii, a weeklong<lb />vacation from his campaign in<lb />August and his pre-election visit<lb />in October. Family members said<lb />his grandmother could not travel<lb />because of her health.<lb /><lb />Madelyn Dunham, who took<lb />university classes but to her<lb />chagrin never earned a degree,<lb />nonetheless rose from a secre-<lb />tarial job at the Bank of Hawaii<lb />to become one of the stateTs first<lb />female bank vice presidents.<lb /><lb />oEvery morning, she woke<lb />up at 5 a.m. and changed from<lb />the frowsy muumuus she wore<lb />around the apartment into-a<lb />tailored suit and high-heeled<lb />pumps,? Obama wrote.<lb /><lb />After her health took a turn<lb /><lb />(AP)<lb /><lb />Barack ObamaTs grand-<lb />mother, whose personality and<lb />bearing shaped much of the life<lb />of the Democratic presidential<lb />contender, has died, Obama<lb />announced Monday, one day<lb />before the election. Madelyn<lb />Payne Dunham was 86.<lb /><lb />Obama announced the news<lb />from the campaign trail in Char-<lb />lotte, N.C. The joint statement<lb />with his sister Maya Soetoro-Ng<lb />said Dunham died peacefully<lb />late Sunday night after a battle<lb />with cancer.<lb /><lb />They said: oShe was the<lb />comerstone of our family, and a<lb />woman of extraordinary accom-<lb />plishment, strength, and humil-<lb />ity. She was the person who<lb />encouraged and allowed us to<lb />take chances.?<lb /><lb />Obama learned of her death<lb />Monday morning while he was<lb />campaigning in Jacksonville,<lb /><lb />Fla. He. planned to go ahead<lb /><lb />with campaign appearances. The<lb /><lb />family said a private ceremony<lb />would be held later.<lb /><lb />Republican John McCain<lb />issued condolences to his oppo-<lb />nent.<lb /><lb />oOur thoughts and prayers<lb />go out to them as they remember<lb />and celebrate the life of someone<lb />who had such a profound impact<lb />in their lives,? the statement by<lb />John and Cindy McCain said.<lb /><lb />Last month, Obama took a<lb />break from campaigning and flew<lb />to Hawaii to be with Dunham as<lb />her health declined.<lb /><lb />Obama said the decision to<lb />go to Hawaii was easy to make,<lb />telling CBS that he ogot there<lb />too late? when his mother died<lb />of ovarian cancer in 1995 at 53,<lb />and wanted to make sure othat<lb />I donTt make the same mistake<lb />twice.?<lb /><lb />Outside the apartment build-<lb />ing. where Dunham died, report-<lb />ers and. TV cameras lined the<lb />sidewalk as two police officers<lb />were posted near the elevator.<lb />Signs hanging in the apartment<lb /><lb />lobby warned the public to keep<lb />out.<lb />Longtime family friend<lb /><lb />~Georgia McCauley visited the<lb /><lb />10th-floor apartment where<lb />Obama had lived with his grand-<lb />parent.<lb /><lb />oSo many of us were hoping<lb />and praying that his grandmother<lb />would have the opportunity to<lb />witness her grandson become our<lb />next president,? said state Rep.<lb />Marcus Oshiro, an Obama sup-<lb />porter. oWhat a bittersweet vic-<lb />tory it will be for him. Wow.?<lb /><lb />~The Kansas-born Dunham<lb />and her husband, Stanley, raised<lb />their grandson for several years<lb />so he could attend school in<lb />Honolulu while their daugh-<lb />ter and her second husband<lb />lived overseas. But sheTs<lb />enjoyed watching it.?<lb /><lb />Stanley Dunham died in<lb />1992, while ObamaTs mother<lb />died in 1995. His father is also<lb />deceased.<lb /><lb />When Obama was young, he<lb />and his grandmother toured the<lb />United States by Greyhound bus,<lb />stopping at the Grand Canyon,<lb />Yellowstone Park, Disneyland<lb />and Chicago, where Obama<lb /><lb />would years later settle.<lb /><lb />_ It was an incident during his<lb />teenage years that became one of<lb />ObamaTs most vivid memories<lb />of oToot.? She had been aggres-<lb />sively panhandled by a man<lb />and she wanted her husband to<lb />take her to work. When Obama<lb />asked why, his grandfather said<lb />Madelyn Dunham was bothered<lb />because the panhandler was<lb /><lb />- black.<lb /><lb />The words hit the biracial<lb />Obama olike a fist in my stom-<lb />ach,? he wrote later. He was<lb />sure his grandparents loved him<lb />deeply. oAnd yet,? he added, oTI<lb />knew that men who might easily<lb />have been my brothers could still<lb />inspire their rawest fears.?<lb /><lb />Obama referred to the inci-<lb />dent again when he addressed<lb />race in a speech in March during<lb /><lb />a controversy over his former<lb />pastor, the Rev. When did it become<lb />acceptable to shoot at a person because you think<lb />that they are going to steal or vandalize your cam-<lb />paign sign?<lb /><lb />According to Kenneth Rowles, the shooter, the<lb />youth jumped out of an SUV and yelled, oThis is<lb />for Obama.? Rowles then proceeded toT fire three<lb />warning shots in order to scare the youth away.<lb />One of these shots ended up in the minorTs arm.<lb />Whether Rowles was aiming for the boy or not,<lb />it is completely unacceptable to shoot a gun at or<lb />around a person because of a campaign sign.<lb /><lb />I agree with standing up for a cause and sup-<lb />porting what you believe. One way of showing<lb />your support is to post campaign signs in your<lb />yard. However, it is common knowledge that kids<lb />do dumb things, such as stealing signs from yards.<lb />So why would a person think that shooting a rifle,<lb />even as a scare tactic, is acceptable retaliation?<lb /><lb />RowlesT behavior is only reinforcing the stereo-<lb />type of the gun-loving Republican, and the stigma<lb />attached to people labeled this way. His behavior<lb />only supplies fuel for the argument about how guns<lb />are bad. His behavior reflects poorly on those who»<lb />support McCain, because it says that McCainTs<lb />supporters are willing to take a chance at wounding<lb />people over miniscule things.<lb /><lb />It was only a sign. People need to get a grip<lb />on reality. You donTt fire a gun at another person,<lb />unless that person is threatening your life or liveli-<lb />hood.<lb /><lb />This election is a pivotal one, and we all need<lb />our voices to be heard, but that doesnTt justify the<lb />fact that a man shot someone over his campaign<lb />sign. Instead of allowing the police to do their job<lb />by detaining the teen for vandalism, Rowles took<lb />matters into his own hands and ended up shooting<lb />him. Now Rowles is facing felony charges " what<lb />good does that do McCain?<lb /><lb />If convicted, Rowles will lose all voting rights<lb />for future elections. Good job, Rowles. I hope<lb />his fanaticism will teach everyone that enough is<lb />enough. There is a line that should never be crossed,<lb />and shooting someone because you fear that your<lb />campaign sign is going to be harmed is not in. any<lb />way acceptable.<lb /><lb />All I have to say is; I am so glad this election<lb />will be over today. The faster we find out who<lb />won, the faster people can get mad or get glad and<lb />get over it!<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />-opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />ItTs time to take<lb />action now<lb /><lb />MARY DIXON<lb /><lb />THE EAst CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />When you hear people discuss genocide, odds<lb />are you envision the holocaust. But sadly, genocide<lb />is not a-thing of the past. Case in point: Darfur.<lb /><lb />Darfur has been completely neglected. The<lb />people in this region had very little food, and even<lb />less water. When these people saw they had nothing<lb />else to lose, they attempted to save themselves, and<lb />their fellow neighbors, by fighting back.<lb /><lb />In February of 2003, two local rebel groups<lb />from the Darfur region of Sudan incited an upris-<lb />ing against the mainly Arab government in Khar-<lb />toum, the Sudanese capital. The government was<lb />accused of oppressing non-Arab people, as well as<lb />completely neglecting Darfur. When the uprising<lb />began to take hold, the government feared that<lb />other regions of Sudan would take a cue from<lb />them as well, so they hired the Janjaweed militia<lb />privately to erase the problem altogether. The gov-<lb /><lb />ernment has denied ties to the Janjaweed militia; "<lb /><lb />however, records show that on several occasions<lb />they provided them with large amounts of money.<lb />The militia is comprised of locally recruited Arab<lb />men, along with the Sudanese military. The mili-<lb />tia members go from tribe to tribe, employing a<lb />scorched-earth campaign. Women and children<lb />are raped, tortured and killed on a daily basis.<lb />They steal anything of value, poison the water<lb />. supply and burn villages to the ground. To date,<lb />approximately 400,000 people have been killed,<lb />and nearly 2 million people have been displaced<lb />from their homes.<lb /><lb />Yet, how often do you hear about this? A few<lb />commercials here and there have been aired on TV,<lb />and a tribute CD has been produced. However, this<lb />small amount of attention is not enough to truly<lb />address this issue. ITve sat through hours and hours<lb />of history classes that have expressed the dire need to<lb />always remember history so it does not repeat itself.<lb />So, why has nothing been done to help the millions<lb />of people who not only need, but WANT, our help?<lb />As a nation of educated people I feel itTs our duty as<lb />human beings to do whatever we can to learn from<lb />past mistakes and help the nation of Sudan.<lb /><lb />I am certainly not the first person to have<lb />thought of this idea. STAND is an umbrella organi- .<lb />zation made of over 600 colleges and high schools<lb />who hope to stamp out genocide, specifically in<lb />Darfur. They conduct various activities in order to<lb />raise money to donate to this cause, and are always<lb />doing what they can to spread awareness.<lb /><lb />The crisis in Darfur is not going to correct itself.<lb />The groups conducting the genocide in the country<lb />are paid by the government, and literally have<lb />complete control over all the civilians. These people<lb />witness things that our sheltered eyes have never<lb />laid eyes upon. Kofi Annan, the former United<lb />Nations Secretary General, has called it oa little<lb />short of hell on earth.? ItTs about your can-<lb />didate.<lb /><lb />Let me put this gently: thereTs a very good<lb />chance that whoever youTre voting for this year<lb />might not win.<lb /><lb />I know, itTs scary. That other guy? He totally<lb />opposes everything you stand for. He might even<lb />put those people in charge. You know the ones ITm<lb />talking about. The ones who give you mean looks<lb />whenever youTre driving around and they see your<lb />bumper stickers. Yeah, those people.<lb /><lb />Does it really matter who ITm talking about?<lb />Depending on which dude youTre voting for in the<lb />coming weeks, you probably took that paragraph<lb />with a grain of salt. ae<lb /><lb />Like most people, ITm getting pretty sick and<lb /><lb />otired of all the negativity being thrown around in<lb /><lb />this campaign. On one side, we hear jokes making ~<lb />fun of how old McCain is and how it Depends®<lb />whether or not heT II be a good leader. On the other,<lb />jokes about how Obama makes a better cocktail<lb />companion than a leader are being slung around.<lb />Either way, itTs just a lot of trash talking or an<lb /><lb />attempt to hide everyoneTs fears of othe other.?<lb /><lb />Back in 2000, I was too young to vote in the<lb />election, but I supported Al Gore. When he lost, he<lb />fought to prove the Electoral College swayed the<lb />vote away from what the people and the government<lb />both wanted. Supporters of Bush coined the phrase<lb />oSore/Loserman 2000,? suggesting that there was<lb />no truth to the accusations and portraying Gore and<lb />Lieberman as a muttering bunch of sour grapes.<lb /><lb />In the 2004 election,.worries over being seen<lb />as another Al Gore caused Kerry and Edwards to<lb />immediately concede the election to Bush instead<lb />of fighting for recounts in swing states.<lb /><lb />But this year, it seems weTre not even waiting<lb />for polling to be over to begin the polarization that<lb />usually occurs after Election Day.<lb /><lb />From slashed tires at Obama rallies and a made-<lb />up charge of assault from a McCain supporter in<lb />Pennsylvania, to accusations of racism and thievery<lb />against McCain supporters-- it seems impossible<lb />for either side to admit that the other side might,<lb />just might, support their candidate for reasons<lb />other than race.<lb /><lb />I encourage readers to try a little exercise ITve<lb /><lb />~ been doing the past couple weeks. Close your eyes,<lb /><lb />take a few breaths and think, oMy candidate might<lb />not win.?<lb /><lb />ItTs scary at first " you imagine cities burning,<lb />women and children lamenting in the streets, aliens<lb />attacking us in our most vulnerable state. Let me<lb />assure you: that wonTt happen.<lb /><lb />. What can, and has, happened, is: youTll be<lb />disappointed, youT ll probably have to scrape your<lb />McCain/Obama ~08 sticker off your car the next<lb />morning with a bit of a chip on your shoulder.<lb /><lb />So, in the spirit of this great odemocracy? thing<lb />I keep hearing so much about: DonTt let this election<lb />keep bringing out the worst in us<lb /><lb />What can win is our ability to think, feel and<lb />act in a sympathetic manner. If you donTt like your<lb />new President, then get more involved in local and<lb />national politics. Amazingly enough, we elect more<lb />than just the President in November, and casting<lb />your vote for a politician who represents your ideals<lb />can be done every year, from members of the local<lb />school board to justices.<lb /><lb />So, as ITve been trying to do myself, I think<lb />itTs important that we all take a deep breath and<lb />remember, oItTs not the end of the world.?<lb /><lb />That is, unless Palin ends up being President.<lb />Just kidding.<lb /><lb />This writer can be.contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Elise Phillips<lb />Editor in Chief<lb /><lb />Natalie Jurgen Andrea Robertson<lb />News Editor Opinion Editor<lb />Ronnie Woodward Jared Jackson<lb /><lb />Sports Editor Asst. The self-proclaimed<lb />oWorldwide Leader in Sports?<lb />currently has a stranglehold on<lb />college football, and itTs ruining<lb />the sport.<lb /><lb />With no restraint, ESPN<lb /><lb />is regularly showing college<lb /><lb />football games Tuesday through<lb />Sunday, including ECUTs 13-10<lb />win at UCF Sunday night.<lb /><lb />So whatTs the problem with<lb />ESPN showing college foot-<lb />ball five or six days out of the<lb />week?<lb /><lb />First of all, these football<lb /><lb />players are student-athletes.<lb />When television forces them<lb />to play football games on days<lb />other than Saturday, they are<lb />blatantly ignoring the student<lb />aspect of student-athlete. Play-<lb />ing a college football game is<lb />not a simple thing, especially<lb />in a conference as spread out as<lb />~Conference USA. The three and<lb /><lb />a half hours of football shown<lb />on television is simply the final<lb />piece of the puzzle.T<lb /><lb />For last Tuesday nightTs<lb />ESPN game between Marshall<lb />and Houston, the visiting Cou-<lb /><lb />- gars departed the Houston air-<lb /><lb />port Monday at 1:30 p.m. and<lb />returned at 3 a.m. on Wednesday,<lb />Houston Sports Information<lb />director Chris Burkhalter said in<lb />an e-mail. So HoustonTs players<lb />probably missed at least two days<lb />of classes, just so they could<lb />lose a football game on national<lb />television.<lb /><lb />And we wonder why so many<lb />football players are kicked out<lb />of school or suspended for prob-<lb />lems with academics.<lb /><lb />After ECUTs game Sunday<lb />night, the teamTs flight landed in<lb />Greenville around 5 a.m. Monday<lb />morning. I imagine there werenTt<lb />too many football players in class<lb />just a couple of hours later, and<lb />I donTt blame them. If I were a<lb />football player, I wouldnTt be in<lb />class the morning after playing<lb />a football game and flying from<lb />Orlando to Greenville all in one<lb />night.,<lb /><lb />So does ESPN really care<lb /><lb />about the discomfort it causes<lb /><lb />student-athletes by playing these<lb />nontraditional football games?<lb /><lb />oThe television networks get<lb />to pick the games they wish to<lb />show, and ECU has little control<lb />over the decision to play a game<lb />on a day other than Saturday,?<lb />ECU Athletics director Terry Hol-<lb />land said in an e-mail last week.<lb /><lb />Well, that answers that ques-<lb />tion.<lb /><lb />~Aside from the academic<lb />issue, ESPN has created a false<lb />sense of the exposure that teams<lb />receive by playing these non-<lb />Saturday games.<lb /><lb />Eleven years ago, ESPN first:<lb /><lb />began showing Thursday night<lb /><lb />games on a weekly basis"and ~<lb /><lb />it worked.<lb /><lb />It worked because the net-<lb />work found a niche, showing<lb />high-profile match-ups that<lb />attracted national audiences.<lb />But in recent years"especially<lb />this one"the Thursday night<lb />game has been devalued because<lb />playing a football game on a day<lb />other than Saturday isnTt a big<lb />deal anymore: ItTs normal. ESPN<lb />has recognized this, shifting its<lb />high profile game of the week<lb /><lb />to a Saturday night broadcast<lb />on ABC"actually, oESPN on<lb />ABC,? whatever that means.<lb /><lb />I also have to question how<lb />much exposure ECU got by<lb />playing UCF on Sunday night,<lb />especially when the announcers<lb />spent~much of the broadcast talk-<lb />ing about the BCS, politics, the<lb />Heisman Trophy, more BCS and .<lb />anything else except the dismal<lb />game being played in front of<lb />them. Most UCF fans who cared<lb />enough to watch the game actu-<lb />ally attended it. A person who<lb />wanted to watch football"but<lb />didnTt have any ties to either<lb />school"was probably watching<lb />the NFL game between the New<lb />England Patriots and Indianapo-<lb />lis Colts, which was happening at<lb />the same time as the ECU game.<lb />That means that ECU fans were<lb />the main ones being oexposed?<lb />to the game.<lb /><lb />Despite the fact that ECU<lb />has two non-Saturday games<lb />this season, Holland tries his<lb /><lb />- best to keep ECUTs,home games<lb /><lb />on Saturdays. According to Hol-<lb />land, ESPN wanted to show this<lb />yearTs ECU-West Virginia game<lb />on Thursday night, but Holland<lb />wanted to do whatTs best for<lb />all involved, and the two sides<lb />agreed to play the game on the<lb />second Saturday of the season.<lb />oNon-Saturday games pro-<lb /><lb />vide wonderful exposure for<lb />ECU and our athletic program<lb />on television, but those games are<lb />usually not well-attended, even<lb />when the tickets have been sold,?<lb />Holland said. oOur loyalty is to<lb />the fans who come to support our<lb />team each and every home game.<lb />Therefore, we do our best to keep<lb /><lb />- our home games on Saturdays to<lb /><lb />show our loyalty to those who<lb />come and sit in the heat, cold,<lb />rain and snow to cheer for the<lb />Pirates.?<lb /><lb />Holland deserves credit for<lb />his unwillingness to give in to<lb />ESPN, and I wish there were<lb />more people like him in college<lb />football. These nontraditional<lb />football games do more harm<lb />than good, but not enough people<lb />realize that.<lb /><lb />So congratulations ESPN,<lb />college football does olive here.?<lb />Unfortunately.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />- sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb /></p>
