Students attending classes
in the Bate Building were in
for a surprise yesterday after a
fire broke out in a wastebasket
in the mens bathroom on the
second floor. No injuries were
reported.
According to Chief Bill
Branch of the Greenville Fire
Department, the fire caused
no structural damage and the
building itself did not burn,
however there was smoke in the
building.
We got the call at 1:25 p.m.
and the ECU Police Department
had extinguished the fire prior to
our atrival,? said Branch.
According to ECUs Chief
Public Affairs Officer John
Durham, classes were cancelled
from the time.of the fire until 5
p.m. and no one was allowed to
enter the building.
The Fire Marshal asked that
«we empty the building while an
arson investigation was com-
pleted,? said Durham.
The Greenville Fire Depart-
ment removed smoke from the
building using positive pressure
The Bate Building re-opened yesterday at 5 p.m. for classes to resume.

Durham said that the fire
appears intentional and cur-
rently no suspects have been
identified.
The fire is suspicious in
nature,? Branch said. The inves-
tigation is ongoing,. according

This is the second wastebas-
ket fire since 2006. On July 28,

in Bate.

cans to become more interested
in prevention education and The
Federal Reserve Bank of Rich-
mond is lending a helping hand
to these Americans by hosting
forums, in, North.Carolina,.South-...,
Carolina, Maryland, Washing-
ton DC and most of western
Virginia.
We are hosting this fore-
closure forum [at] universi-
ties in our districts and ECU is
one of them,? said Angelyque
Campbell, senior manager for
community affairs of the Federal
Reserve Bank of Richmond.
The forum took place Oct.
27 in Hendrix Theater and
included panelists from the Fed-
eral Reserve Bank of Richmond
that covered topics ranging from
the credit market to mortgage
foreclosures.

The senate will put the SGA
constitution up for revision soon
and it is vital that the student

percentage point Wednesday,
driving it to a level seen only
once before in the last half-cen-
tury, and the government finally
began distributing funds from the
billions in the financial rescue

days before a national election,

with the most serious financial

night, summoning voters to
choose hope over fear and unity

with broken promises.

has come,? Obama said in the
final moments of the unusual ad,
a blend of videotaped moments
and a live appearance before

With a busy schedule and a pinched pocket, fast

Every day the National Debt increases approxi-
mately $3.84 billion; the debt is presently about
$10.5 trillion. To think that our country has the
money to build a super storm tracker is absurd!
On Oct. 3, Bush signed the bill to enact the
bailout. This law allows the Treasury Security to
take as much as $700 billion in order to help banks
continue to give loans. The bailout is one of the
most extreme moves our government has taken
for our economy since the Great Depression. If we
have to bail the banks out of debt by using our hard-
earned tax dollars, so people can keep their houses,
how could our government consider it plausible to
begin funding a weather satellite?
For the fiscal year of 2009, our government will
be granting the National Aeronautics and Space
Administration $17.6 billion in order to continue
their research on our planet and our solar system. I
dont know about you, but with our economy doing
so poorly, Im not concerned with whether or not
we continue to study space; Im more concerned
with whether or not I will have the money to pay
my mortgage! My tax dollars dont need to fund
space exploration or weather satellites; my tax dol-
lars need to fund necessities.
Americas leaders cannot continue to think
that they can fund superfluous projects, when our
economy is in Such an awful state. The government
needs to stop trying to work on new projects and
address the issues at hand, like what will happen to
the pocketbooks of the middle class and the lower
" class citizens in the next year.
Our government is finding itself in this terrible
economic situation, because it is spending more
money than it is bringing in. The governments
wallet is just like yours and mine; if you spend
more than you have, you go into debt. I dont
understand how that concept is so difficult to
understand. ~Dont spend money on projects that
can be put on hold, when banks are being forced
to foreclose on peoples homes and employers
are being forced to significantly cut back on their
employees. Concentrate on the important issue of
rebuilding our economy, then develop super satel-
lites and explore space.

Remember taking the sex ed. lesson that accom-
panied the high school gym and P.E. classes? Now,
imagine taking the same classes in middle-school
or in elementary school. I feel that sex education
should begin in middle school at the earliest. Any-
time earlier is robbing a child of his or her blissful
freedom from the woes of maturity.
The British have been discussing the start of
sex education with children as young as five years
of age. Sex education is very important, but I feel
that the innocence of childhood is even more vital
to development.
Early childhood is meant for learning how
to make friends and for playing. If a child learns
how dangerous sexually transmitted diseases can
be by being too close? to their friend, then that
child could be too scared to sleep next to anyone
during naptime. Childhood is a time for purity and
carelessness, not a time to be afraid of pregnancy
and sexually transmitted infections!
Toys constantly influence children and televi-
sion shows are trying to steal their innocence. From
a young age, girls are swayed by the sexuality of
Hanna Montana and Bratz dolls, and the allure
of young motherhood from stars like Jamie Lynn
Spears. Boys follow the images they see in music
videos or the mature rated videogames that they
can get a hold of. They will realize that the people
and images that they admire are full of sex. If
children are made to learn about sex as early as
five, these children will be completely oe eens of
their innocence.
There is also the risk of younger students want-
ing to experience sex at a younger age if the idea
is introduced too early. Would a child try to get
cookies out of the cookie jar if he isnt told where
the cookie jar is in the first place? If a teacher
introduces sex and what it ~looks like, per se, then
a childs interest will at least be peeked enough to
explore what is forbidden.
Sex education helps the youth become more
aware of their bodies. But as many of us know,
ignorance is bliss and children should be the most
blissful people. Parents should guide their children
toward more childhood experiences, like the play-
ground or board games instead of letting the sex-
drenched media raise their children. Let children
stay innocent as long as they can. They grow up
too quickly as it is.

stay open late. McDonalds is located worldwide
and is conveniently open 24 hours. Although it is
hard to pass up that greasy burger, we really should
start making more of an effort to stop giving in to
our cravings.
Some fast food restaurants now list the calories,
fat grams and sodium on the wrappers and provide
Web sites to access nutritional information. After
visiting one of the Web sites, the overwhelming
amount of junk in each item repulsed me and dis-
couraged my fast food eating for months. Inevita-
bly, even having access to nutritional information,
people still line up in drive-thrus for their quick
and easy meal, but I suppose that knowing a double
quarter-pounder with cheese has 42 grams of fat is
not that intimidating to everyone.
According to an article in Rolling Stone,
Americans now spend more money on fast food
than they do on higher education, personal comput-_
ers, software or new cars. They spend more on fast
_ food than on movies, books, magazines, newspa-
pers, videos and recorded music, combined.? It is
a shame that people would rather invest money in
stomachaches and greasy fingers than enjoy a good
book or newly released CD.
It is estimated by the American School
Fund Service that 30 percent of U.S. public
high schools serve branded fast food. Pizza Hut,
Dominos, McDonalds and Chick-fil-A sell food
to the nations schools. Taco Bell sends its food to
approximately 4,500 cafeterias.
Wendys, McDonalds, Krispy Kreme, Sheetz
and Arbys are located directly across from ECUs
campus. Students cannot help but acknowledge the
presence of. fast food restaurants. I am certainly
guilty of sliding through the drive-thru between
classes to pick up a crispy chicken sandwich or even
picking up the occasional double cheeseburger-
conveniently the smallest thing available on the
late night menu at McDonalds.
I am one of many Americans who have been
trapped by the fast food insanity, but I feel that we
need to make a better effort to break this fattening
cycle. Until healthier options are available at afford-
able prices,. fast food restaurants will continue to
have loyal consumers. But, we should at least try
to stick with the chicken sandwiches and water, no
fries. And at all costs, avoid super-sizing, value-
sizing or sonic-sizing anything.

and the new nostalgia

Lovers of 1990s hits: Look
no further.
Assembly Required, a
Greenville circuit band, with mem-
~bers from Kinston and G-Vegas
alike, bring out the melodic, pop
and grunge-induced sounds that
generation-Y kids buzzed to in the
mid-to-late 1990s.
With a host of influences from
Nirvana, Bush, Collective Soul,
Green Day, Oasis, Fuel, and even
Boyz II Men, Assembly Required
draws upon the growing nostalgia
from this newly abated era. In
doing so, theyve found plenty of
crowds that have not forgotten any
words to songs from the alternative
rock genre.
More than just another cover
band, Assembly Required has
strived to step beyond simple
crowd-pleasing songs and have
relentlessly worked on original
material for their newest EP, Incep-
tion, which is to be released on
» Halloween. Also, a complete LP |
of original songs is set to release
within a month or so.
Band member Robbie John-
son, the only remaining founding
member, recalls the steady rise of
the band from high school parties
to college shows. Their first col-
lege show, at Hams in Greenville,
seemed to set the tone as they com-
peted in the Battle of the Bands.
Taking second place against the
already established band Kathar-
sis, Assembly Required was quite
pleased for-being first timers.
From then on, the band moved
from show to show, having seen both
small and large crowds, and even
getting to play shows alongside repu-
table acts such as 40oz., Freedom,
Chevelle, Flyleaf, Fuel and Whild
Peach (Outcasts backing band).
Although, their highest moment
Johnson and member Greg Pollard
agree, was getting to play X-Fest 8
in front of thousands.
Theres nothing like ~feeling
the crowd moving to your music,?
said Pollard, about the show.

Tae Kwon Do at ECU as well as
an instructor at Byung Lees Tae
Kwon Do School on Firetower
Road in Greenville. _
Growing up, my three broth-
ers would pick on me, but even
now after we all figured out how
to get along I still feel a need
to learn a way to defend myself
especially with the way the world
is today,? said Walker.
The Tae Kwon Do club
focuses on kicking skills, forms
and specific self-defense moves
as well-as meditations and spiri-
tual and mental focusing.
The club meets Tue. " Thu.,
8:45 p.m. - 9:45 p.m. in room 238
at the student recreation center.
There is typically good
attendance in all of the classes of
about 25-50 people with mainly

Boogie rock has never been
all-that popular. Tell bands like
Mountain, Foghat and Cactus. The
reason is relatively unknown, but
Electric Sixs problem is different.
Theyve always been a decent
band and Flashy doesnt see them
trying anything new. Even beyond
that, the material is less stellar than
previous entries, though still filled
with all the loudness one would
expect. Their approach on Flashy
is even more rooted in hard rock
acts from the 1970s than usual, and
as a result is almost drab. If they
focused more on soul or funk and
incorporate that with their Boston-
esque intensity, they might come
up with a very groovy record.
Rise Against " Appeal to
Reason (Interscope) 2 out of 5
The style that Rise Against
follows is reminiscent to bands you
forgot about back in middle school;
bands like the Offspring. They re
edgier, sure, but their sound hasnt
evolved much beyond that. What
makes Rise Against better and
more appealing than their garbage
colleagues Good Charlotte is that
their political messages are not an
outward statement, but an inward
one. Hero of War? is one notable
song, as its lyrics are inspired by
a story the band heard an Iraq
War veteran tell: Maybe because
theyre not spouting political rheto-
ric without thought, their voice is
that much clearer.

better or worse), and even though
their material isnt always wholly
original, its still entertaining.
Black Ice is no. different. Rock
n Roll Train? and Skies On Fire?
are certainly welcome entries, sim-
plistic in their sparse guitar roars

and enjoyable. Skeletal Lamping
is a train of energy, seamless from
start to finish. Itd be fine if it was
filled with songs like their opener,
Nonpareil of Favor,? but theyre
not, as their psychedelic sounds
stow increasingly weary over
this 15-song ~album. Not to men-
tion that Kevin Barnes has grown
increasingly crazy over the bands
tenure, and now hes got an alter
ego of a black transsexual. Fine

dismantling of Boston College. Wide receiver
Hakeem Nicks had 170 yards and four touch-
downs"l repeat, four touchdowns"in the
Heels impressive win. Add in the fact that each
of UNCs losses were by field goals, and the
Heels reclaim their status as the best college
football team in the Carolinas.

As | stated in North Carolinas recap, | hate
to move South Carolina from the top spot to
the second spot, but | just have to. Luckily for
the Gamecocks, they will have some chances
to impress in the next month and could easily
regain that top spot. All of that starts this
week, when Tennessee rolls into town. The
Vols are obviously having a down year, but
Tennessee has owned this series, and dont
forget about Steve Spurriers connection to
Tennessee. USC is coming off a bye week and
Spurrier should rekindle his hatred for Tennes-
see. ... This week USC wins. ... big. :

It was low scoring and it was ugly, but it was
Duke football beating a legitimate team on
the road. That describes Dukes win over
Vanderbilt last Saturday. The Blue Devils com-
mitted seven penalties, missed two field goals
and only rushed for 28 yards, but they came
away with a win and are now only two wins
from bowl eligibility. Duke now has five regular
season games left and the magic number is
two. A 2-3 finish to the regular season would
give Duke the unthinkable: a bowl game in
David Cutcliffes first year.

Wake Forest has lost two-straight games and
is reeling quickly, but they stay ahead of ECU
because you cant take away Wakes win at
Florida State earlier this season. ECUs best
wins"Virginia Tech and West Virginia"cant
equal Wakes win in Tallahassee, Fla. That loss
is FSUs only loss of the season, and the Semi-
noles are in all-out surge mode right now, while
Virginia Tech and West Virginia have failed to
live up to preseason hype. With that said, the
Deacons seriously need a win and cant afford
to lose to Duke at home this Saturday, or else
panic mode could set in.

From arrests to suspensions, to injuries, ECUs
bye week was anything but calm. Im guess-
ing this team just wants to get back to play-
ing football, and it will do just that at UCF on
Sunday night. The team that will take the field
that night will be full of new faces, which can
have its positives and negatives. The Pirates
have also been anything but predictable this
then three disappointing losses to follow.
ECUs next two games have serious confer-
ence title implications and you really just never
know how ECU will respond to that at this
point. ... We'll see.

after the hot start, including

ECU knocked off division
rival CNU, 8-4, in Yorktown, Va.
on Friday before holding off the
Blue Devils in Hillsborough on
Saturday, 4-2.

USA in that statistical category.
The Knights only allow about
117 yards on the ground per
game, which could produce
some problems for the Pirates.
The Pirate defense is argu-
ably the most banged up injury
wise that it has been all year.
Those who are doubtful or
out for the UCF game include
linebacker Melvin Patterson,
defensive end Scotty Robinson
and cornerback Jerek Hewitt.
Those listed as questionable
include defensive tackle Khalif
Mitchell, strong safety J.J. Mill-
brook and defensive end Marcus
Hands.
If there has to be a game in
which key players would miss,
it would seemingly be this one.
The Knights offense ranks dead
last in total offense in C-USA,
averaging only around 240 yards
per game.
When you look at them
from an offensive standpoint,
I know theyve been through
some question marks right now,
as theyre trying to find a little
bit of their identity and who they

The Knights are coming off

season in a 49-19 lass to No.
18 Tulsa. While the score might
not reflect maximum effort, UCF
was leading 19-14 at halftime.
The Knights have been
switching between two quarter-
backs, much like ECU, but most
recently has used freshman Rob
Calabrese. Against the Golden
Hurricane, Calabrese was 8-
of-15 for 124 yards and two
touchdowns.
Calabrese was Aaa
locked on to Brian Watters who
came away with two touchdown
receptions and had 121 yards
receiving. Brynn Harvey had
one of the best UCF rushing per-
formances of the season against
the Golden Hurricane with 91
yards on 24 carries.
Holtz knows that beginning
this week, the C-USA race heats
up and he could not be any more
excited. .
We kind of draw that line

KSU knocked off ECU, 8-0

ment during their championship
season. Earlier in that season, the
Owls held on for a 10-6 victory
over the Pirates.
They usually have a solid
team,? said Markham. It will
be a good game with us being
in their barn. It will be a good
test for us.?
ECU returns home next week
for a 9:30 rematch with Duke on
Nov. 7.
