Many<lb />economists say that our country is spiraling toward<lb />arecession, which could ultimately lead to another<lb />depression. Unemployment rates are up. Banks are<lb />failing. Homes are foreclosing. Our economy is in<lb />a bad place, which brings me to my point " why is<lb />the United States spending money that they dont<lb />have on things that they dont need?<lb /><lb />The United States is planning to construct and<lb />launch a satellite that will be able to track ~hurricanes<lb /><lb />{ Your Procrastination Destination \<lb /><lb />THURSDAY OCTOBER 30, 2008<lb /><lb />AS<lb /><lb />BOTH PRESIDENTIAL<lb />CANDIDATES PROMISE<lb />RADICAL CHANGE IN<lb />HEALTH CARE!<lb /><lb />1)<lb />i i<lb />&/ if<lb />le «<lb />ij<lb /><lb />DOES THAT<lb />\. It seems that<lb />fast food restaurants are popping up everywhere.<lb />It is affordable, convenient and quick, and unfor-<lb />tunately, I am guilty of eating a greasy burger from<lb />time to time. The critical value placed on time in<lb />our society, is creating this fast food frenzy; further<lb />developing a fat, lazy America. This fact is very ©<lb />depressing.<lb /><lb />When eating fast food, there is no hassle in<lb />buying the necessary ingredients, preparing and<lb />cleaning up a meal. You do not even have to get<lb />out of the car to finish a meal, and once the meal is<lb />complete, you simply toss the bag; yet, what hap-<lb />pened to caring about the health of your body?<lb /><lb />NN<lb /><lb />and tornadoes.much better than the technology that<lb />we currently have. Sounds like a good idea, right?<lb />Wrong! This satellite will cost the United States<lb />$7.6 billion! They dont have that kind of money!<lb /><lb />Now served in restaurants, airports, schools<lb />and sports venues, fast food is now a booming<lb />industry in America. Fast food restaurants not only<lb />have larger portion sizes and value menus, but they<lb /><lb />\\<lb /><lb />: ii<lb /><lb />i i<lb />\\<lb /><lb />i,<lb />iD<lb />ska<lb /><lb />:<lb />:<lb /><lb />| |<lb /><lb />Every day the National Debt increases approxi-<lb />mately $3.84 billion; the debt is presently about<lb />$10.5 trillion. To think that our country has the<lb />money to build a super storm tracker is absurd!<lb /><lb />On Oct. 3, Bush signed the bill to enact the<lb />bailout. This law allows the Treasury Security to<lb />take as much as $700 billion in order to help banks<lb />continue to give loans. The bailout is one of the<lb />most extreme moves our government has taken<lb />for our economy since the Great Depression. If we<lb />have to bail the banks out of debt by using our hard-<lb />earned tax dollars, so people can keep their houses,<lb />how could our government consider it plausible to<lb />begin funding a weather satellite?<lb /><lb />For the fiscal year of 2009, our government will<lb />be granting the National Aeronautics and Space<lb />Administration $17.6 billion in order to continue<lb />their research on our planet and our solar system. I<lb />dont know about you, but with our economy doing<lb />so poorly, Im not concerned with whether or not<lb />we continue to study space; Im more concerned<lb />with whether or not I will have the money to pay<lb />my mortgage! My tax dollars dont need to fund<lb />space exploration or weather satellites; my tax dol-<lb />lars need to fund necessities.<lb /><lb />Americas leaders cannot continue to think<lb />that they can fund superfluous projects, when our<lb />economy is in Such an awful state. The government<lb />needs to stop trying to work on new projects and<lb />address the issues at hand, like what will happen to<lb />the pocketbooks of the middle class and the lower<lb />" class citizens in the next year.<lb /><lb />Our government is finding itself in this terrible<lb />economic situation, because it is spending more<lb />money than it is bringing in. The governments<lb />wallet is just like yours and mine; if you spend<lb />more than you have, you go into debt. I dont<lb />understand how that concept is so difficult to<lb />understand. ~Dont spend money on projects that<lb />can be put on hold, when banks are being forced<lb />to foreclose on peoples homes and employers<lb />are being forced to significantly cut back on their<lb />employees. Concentrate on the important issue of<lb />rebuilding our economy, then develop super satel-<lb />lites and explore space.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Too soon for<lb />~the talk<lb /><lb />JASON M. WALLACE<lb />THE East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />Remember taking the sex ed. lesson that accom-<lb />panied the high school gym and P.E. classes? Now,<lb />imagine taking the same classes in middle-school<lb />or in elementary school. I feel that sex education<lb />should begin in middle school at the earliest. Any-<lb />time earlier is robbing a child of his or her blissful<lb />freedom from the woes of maturity.<lb /><lb />The British have been discussing the start of<lb />sex education with children as young as five years<lb />of age. Sex education is very important, but I feel<lb />that the innocence of childhood is even more vital<lb />to development.<lb /><lb />Early childhood is meant for learning how<lb />to make friends and for playing. If a child learns<lb />how dangerous sexually transmitted diseases can<lb />be by being too close? to their friend, then that<lb />child could be too scared to sleep next to anyone<lb />during naptime. Childhood is a time for purity and<lb />carelessness, not a time to be afraid of pregnancy<lb />and sexually transmitted infections!<lb /><lb />Toys constantly influence children and televi-<lb />sion shows are trying to steal their innocence. From<lb />a young age, girls are swayed by the sexuality of<lb />Hanna Montana and Bratz dolls, and the allure<lb />of young motherhood from stars like Jamie Lynn<lb />Spears. Boys follow the images they see in music<lb />videos or the mature rated videogames that they<lb />can get a hold of. They will realize that the people<lb />and images that they admire are full of sex. If<lb />children are made to learn about sex as early as<lb />five, these children will be completely oe eens of<lb />their innocence.<lb /><lb />There is also the risk of younger students want-<lb />ing to experience sex at a younger age if the idea<lb />is introduced too early. Would a child try to get<lb />cookies out of the cookie jar if he isnt told where<lb />the cookie jar is in the first place? If a teacher<lb />introduces sex and what it ~looks like, per se, then<lb />a childs interest will at least be peeked enough to<lb />explore what is forbidden.<lb /><lb />Sex education helps the youth become more<lb />aware of their bodies. But as many of us know,<lb />ignorance is bliss and children should be the most<lb />blissful people. Parents should guide their children<lb />toward more childhood experiences, like the play-<lb />ground or board games instead of letting the sex-<lb />drenched media raise their children. Let children<lb />stay innocent as long as they can. They grow up<lb />too quickly as it is.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />i<lb /><lb />|<lb /><lb />\\<lb /><lb />\<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate Rants. After<lb />visiting one of the Web sites, the overwhelming<lb />amount of junk in each item repulsed me and dis-<lb />couraged my fast food eating for months. Inevita-<lb />bly, even having access to nutritional information,<lb />people still line up in drive-thrus for their quick<lb />and easy meal, but I suppose that knowing a double<lb />quarter-pounder with cheese has 42 grams of fat is<lb />not that intimidating to everyone.<lb /><lb />According to an article in Rolling Stone,<lb />Americans now spend more money on fast food<lb />than they do on higher education, personal comput-_<lb />ers, software or new cars. They spend more on fast<lb /><lb />_ food than on movies, books, magazines, newspa-<lb /><lb />pers, videos and recorded music, combined.? It is<lb />a shame that people would rather invest money in<lb />stomachaches and greasy fingers than enjoy a good<lb />book or newly released CD.<lb /><lb />It is estimated by the American School<lb />Fund Service that 30 percent of U.S. public<lb />high schools serve branded fast food. Pizza Hut,<lb />Dominos, McDonalds and Chick-fil-A sell food<lb />to the nations schools. Taco Bell sends its food to<lb />approximately 4,500 cafeterias.<lb /><lb />Wendys, McDonalds, Krispy Kreme, Sheetz<lb />and Arbys are located directly across from ECUs<lb />campus. Students cannot help but acknowledge the<lb />presence of. fast food restaurants. I am certainly<lb />guilty of sliding through the drive-thru between<lb />classes to pick up a crispy chicken sandwich or even<lb />picking up the occasional double cheeseburger-<lb />conveniently the smallest thing available on the<lb />late night menu at McDonalds.<lb /><lb />I am one of many Americans who have been<lb />trapped by the fast food insanity, but I feel that we<lb />need to make a better effort to break this fattening<lb />cycle. Until healthier options are available at afford-<lb />able prices,. fast food restaurants will continue to<lb />have loyal consumers. BLACK<lb />THE EAst CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />Lovers of 1990s hits: Look<lb />no further.<lb /><lb />Assembly Required, a<lb />Greenville circuit band, with mem-<lb /><lb />~bers from Kinston and G-Vegas<lb /><lb />alike, bring out the melodic, pop<lb />and grunge-induced sounds that<lb />generation-Y kids buzzed to in the<lb />mid-to-late 1990s.<lb /><lb />With a host of influences from<lb />Nirvana, Bush, Collective Soul,<lb />Green Day, Oasis, Fuel, and even<lb />Boyz II Men, Assembly Required<lb />draws upon the growing nostalgia<lb />from this newly abated era. In<lb />doing so, theyve found plenty of<lb />crowds that have not forgotten any<lb />words to songs from the alternative<lb />rock genre.<lb /><lb />More than just another cover<lb />band, Assembly Required has<lb />strived to step beyond simple<lb />crowd-pleasing songs and have<lb />relentlessly worked on original<lb />material for their newest EP, Incep-<lb />tion, which is to be released on<lb /><lb />» Halloween. Also, a complete LP |<lb /><lb />of original songs is set to release<lb />within a month or so.<lb /><lb />Band member Robbie John-<lb />son, the only remaining founding<lb />member, recalls the steady rise of<lb />the band from high school parties<lb /><lb />to college shows. Tell bands like<lb />Mountain, Foghat and Cactus. The<lb />reason is relatively unknown, but<lb />Electric Sixs problem is different.<lb />Theyve always been a decent<lb />band and Flashy doesnt see them<lb />trying anything new. Even beyond<lb />that, the material is less stellar than<lb />previous entries, though still filled<lb />with all the loudness one would<lb />expect. Their approach on Flashy<lb />is even more rooted in hard rock<lb />acts from the 1970s than usual, and<lb />as a result is almost drab. If they<lb />focused more on soul or funk and<lb />incorporate that with their Boston-<lb /><lb />esque intensity, they might come<lb /><lb />up with a very groovy record.<lb /><lb />Rise Against " Appeal to<lb />Reason (Interscope) 2 out of 5<lb /><lb />The style that Rise Against<lb /><lb />follows is reminiscent to bands you<lb /><lb />forgot about back in middle school;<lb />bands like the Offspring. They re<lb />edgier, sure, but their sound hasnt<lb />evolved much beyond that. What<lb />makes Rise Against better and<lb />more appealing than their garbage<lb />colleagues Good Charlotte is that<lb />their political messages are not an<lb />outward statement, but an inward<lb />one. Hero of War? is one notable<lb />song, as its lyrics are inspired by<lb />a story the band heard an Iraq<lb /><lb />War veteran tell: Maybe because<lb /><lb />theyre not spouting political rheto-<lb />ric without thought, their voice is<lb />that much clearer.<lb /><lb />THURSDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2008<lb /><lb />AC/DC - Black Ice (Colum-<lb /><lb />bia) 3 out of 5<lb /><lb />The gods of minimalist hard<lb /><lb />rock have returned with a set of<lb />fresh pulsing riffs and a big load<lb />of bass. They ve never succumbed<lb />to trends or changes in music (for<lb />better or worse), and even though<lb />their material isnt always wholly<lb />original, its still entertaining.<lb />Black Ice is no. different. <lb />Record: 6-2<lb /><lb />Last week: Won vs. Boston College, 45-24<lb />Even though South Carolina had a bye week<lb />last week and couldnt help its situation, it<lb />just cant hold on to the top spot again. |<lb />hate to penalize a-team for not playing, but<lb />UNC looked that good last week in a 45-24<lb />dismantling of Boston College. Wide receiver<lb />Hakeem Nicks had 170 yards and four touch-<lb />downs"l repeat, four touchdowns"in the<lb />Heels impressive win. Add in the fact that each<lb />of UNCs losses were by field goals, and the<lb />Heels reclaim their status as the best college<lb />football team in the Carolinas.<lb /><lb />Record: 5-3<lb /><lb />Last week: Bye week<lb /><lb />As | stated in North Carolinas recap, | hate<lb />to move South Carolina from the top spot to<lb />the second spot, but | just have to. Luckily for<lb />the Gamecocks, they will have some chances<lb />to impress in the next month and could easily<lb />regain that top spot. All of that starts this<lb />week, when Tennessee rolls into town. The<lb />Vols are obviously having a down year, but<lb />Tennessee has owned this series, and dont<lb />forget about Steve Spurriers connection to<lb />Tennessee. USC is coming off a bye week and<lb />Spurrier should rekindle his hatred for Tennes-<lb />see. ... This week USC wins. ... big. :<lb /><lb />Record: 4-3<lb /><lb />Last week: Won at Vanderbilt, 10-7<lb /><lb />It was low scoring and it was ugly, but it was<lb />Duke football beating a legitimate team on<lb />the road. That describes Dukes win over<lb />Vanderbilt last Saturday. The Blue Devils com-<lb />mitted seven penalties, missed two field goals<lb />and only rushed for 28 yards, but they came<lb />away with a win and are now only two wins<lb />from bowl eligibility. Duke now has five regular<lb />season games left and the magic number is<lb />two. A 2-3 finish to the regular season would<lb />give Duke the unthinkable: a bowl game in<lb />David Cutcliffes first year.<lb /><lb />Record: 4-3<lb /><lb />Last week: Lost at Miami, 16-10<lb /><lb />Wake Forest has lost two-straight games and<lb />is reeling quickly, but they stay ahead of ECU<lb />because you cant take away Wakes win at<lb />Florida State earlier this season. ECUs best<lb />wins"Virginia Tech and West Virginia"cant<lb />equal Wakes win in Tallahassee, Fla. That loss<lb />is FSUs only loss of the season, and the Semi-<lb />noles are in all-out surge mode right now, while<lb />Virginia Tech and West Virginia have failed to<lb />live up to preseason hype. With that said, the<lb />Deacons seriously need a win and cant afford<lb />to lose to Duke at home this Saturday, or else<lb />panic mode could set in.<lb /><lb />( . | | eel<lb />ARE YOU 8<lb />ANORGAN | =<lb />a:<lb />z |<lb />ce<lb />senshi : E<lb />1-800-355-SHARE<lb />S<lb /><lb />. = Coalition on Organ & Tissue Donation j<lb /><lb />li3 E STH STREET<lb />252-551-9020<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN * SPORTS<lb /><lb />Week nine: Ranking the Carolinas<lb /><lb />Record: 4-3<lb /><lb />Last week: Bye week<lb /><lb />From arrests to suspensions, to injuries, ECUs<lb />bye week was anything but calm. Even though the ECU run-<lb />ning backs are confident going<lb />into Orlando, the UCF rushing<lb />defense sits atop Conference<lb />USA in that statistical category.<lb />The Knights only allow about<lb />117 yards on the ground per<lb />game, which could produce<lb />some problems for the Pirates.<lb /><lb />The Pirate defense is argu-<lb />ably the most banged up injury<lb />wise that it has been all year.<lb />Those who are doubtful or<lb />out for the UCF game include<lb />linebacker Melvin Patterson,<lb />defensive end Scotty Robinson<lb />and cornerback Jerek Hewitt.<lb />Those listed as questionable<lb />include defensive tackle Khalif<lb />Mitchell, strong safety J.J. Mill-<lb />brook and defensive end Marcus<lb />Hands.<lb /><lb />If there has to be a game in<lb />which key players would miss,<lb />it would seemingly be this one.<lb />The Knights offense ranks dead<lb />last in total offense in C-USA,<lb /><lb />averaging only around 240 yards<lb /><lb />per game.<lb />When you look at them<lb /><lb />from an offensive standpoint,<lb /><lb />I know theyve been through<lb />some question marks right now,<lb />as theyre trying to find a little<lb />bit of their identity and who they<lb />are,? While the score might<lb />not reflect maximum effort, UCF<lb />was leading 19-14 at halftime.<lb /><lb />The Knights have been<lb />switching between two quarter-<lb />backs, much like ECU, but most<lb />recently has used freshman Rob<lb />Calabrese. Against the Golden<lb />Hurricane, Calabrese was 8-<lb />of-15 for 124 yards and two<lb />touchdowns.<lb /><lb />Calabrese was Aaa<lb />locked on to Brian Watters who<lb />came away with two touchdown<lb />receptions and had 121 yards<lb />receiving. Brynn Harvey had<lb />one of the best UCF rushing per-<lb /><lb />formances of the season against<lb />the Golden Hurricane with 91<lb />yards on 24 carries.<lb /><lb />Holtz knows that beginning<lb />this week, the C-USA race heats<lb />up and he could not be any more<lb />excited. .<lb /><lb />We kind of draw that line<lb />and put the non-conference<lb />games behind us and we know<lb />what were battling for at this<lb />point,? said Holtz. The non-<lb />conference games are done and<lb />were lining up in a challenge;<lb />in a race for the conference and<lb />were excited about the oppor-<lb />tunities that we have.?<lb /><lb />The C-USA race starts<lb />Sunday and a winner will be<lb />determined.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />HOCKEY continued from B3<lb /><lb />Duke.<lb />We really discovered how<lb />our team is going to gel and how<lb /><lb />were going to come together this~<lb /><lb />year,? Johnston said of the FGCU<lb />game. The competition was very<lb />good. To be able to play a close<lb />game with that good of a team<lb />really shows us where we need to<lb />be at the end of the season.?<lb /><lb />The Pirates appeared in the<lb /><lb />No. 6 spot in the first DIM South<lb />rankings of the season. FGCU,<lb />Tennessee, Georgia Tech, UCF<lb />and Loyola rounded out the<lb /><lb />top-five.<lb />~ Tt?s not that important at.<lb /><lb />all,? Markham said of the polls.<lb />Theres only one ranking that<lb />we look at [thats] to be able to<lb />get to the nationals at the end of<lb />the year.?<lb /><lb />ECU now sits atop the<lb />Colonial Division of the Blue<lb />Ridge Hockey Conference with<lb />wins over ODU, Richmond and<lb /><lb />CNU.<lb />The Pirates return to action<lb /><lb />this weekend against Kennesaw<lb /><lb />State (DII), which has quickly<lb />become a powerhouse in the<lb />southeast. The Owls brought the<lb />DIII National Championship<lb />back to Georgia in 2007 before<lb />moving up to DII.<lb /><lb />KSU knocked off ECU, 8-0<lb />in the South Regional Tourna-<lb />ment during their championship<lb />season. Earlier in that season, the<lb />Owls held on for a 10-6 victory<lb />over the Pirates.<lb /><lb />They usually have a solid<lb />team,? said Markham. It will<lb />be a good game with us being<lb />in their barn. It will be a good<lb />test for us.?<lb /><lb />ECU returns home next week<lb />for a 9:30 rematch with Duke on<lb />Nov. 7.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />«<lb /><lb />Studied it.<lb />RRR RSRORTNRON<lb /><lb />Algebra: Trigonometry.
