<lb />On<lb /><lb />Opin<lb />Get higher<lb />standards<lb /><lb />States shouldn't settle for low<lb />graduation rates to meet goals<lb /><lb />ANDREA ROBERTSON<lb />Tue East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />Today, kids are less likely to padialy than their<lb />parents were.<lb /><lb />Since 2002, No Child Left Behind has bonmbeunied<lb />our school systems, causing both school officials and<lb />teachers to lose sight of their goals " providing stu-<lb />dents with a quality:education that ultimately leads to<lb />the students obtaining a high school diploma.<lb /><lb />Under theTNo Child Left Behind Act, state<lb />schools are required to show both progress toward<lb />higher standardized test scores and a higher rate of<lb />high school graduation. HereTs the loophole " the<lb />states set their own graduation target.<lb /><lb />In order to make it appear that their schools are<lb />making progress in both these criterions, states are<lb />setting their graduation rates extremely low. North<lb />Carolina currently has a graduation rate of 72 percent<lb />and has decided they must improve this rate by a 0.1<lb />percentage point every year. Sadly, it will take nearly<lb />one hundred years for North Carolina to reach a gradu-<lb />ation rate of 80 percent. Because No Child Left Behind<lb />has school officials concerned with producing higher<lb />test scores, states are basically turning a blind eye to<lb />all the students who are dropping out.<lb /><lb />- If there is going to be a national act, like No<lb />Child Left Behind, the federal government should<lb />_ set the graduation targets, not the states. Test scores<lb />should not be the focus of AmericaTs-school sys-<lb />tems. America needs to stop giving schools a pat<lb />on the back for good test scores, when one in four<lb />students is dropping out!<lb /><lb />It is true that the school systems are pressured to<lb />improve their test scores because of No Child Left<lb />Behind, but is our nation so stupid that they canTt<lb />see how many children are being left behind? Stop<lb />focusing on the test scores and focus on the fact that<lb />members of our youth are continuing to fall through<lb />the cracks by not gaining a high school diploma.<lb /><lb />North Carolina has received praise for its high<lb />test scores, but if only 72 percent of their students<lb />graduate, the test scores are irrelevant. Does no one<lb />realize that 28 percent of students in North Carolina<lb />are not graduating?<lb /><lb />Not to mention, states have been getting a break<lb />when it comes to the number of dropouts. Researchers<lb />have only been figuring the amounts of students who<lb />quit school in 12" grade. News flash: you can drop out<lb />before 12" grade! If states canTt do a better job of pro-<lb />ducing more high school graduates, then they shouldnTt<lb />be in charge of setting the target graduation rate.<lb /><lb />There is more than enough time for the federal<lb />government to take a stand in order to make sure<lb />that our-youth are fully benefiting from their edu-<lb /><lb />cational experience. Stop focusing on test scores. -<lb /><lb />Stop allowing states to set graduation targets that<lb />are insanely low. Expect more from our students;<lb />they need their education to make it in this world.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Reality shows:<lb />death of television<lb /><lb />MARY. DIXON<lb />Tue East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />Reality TV has officially invaded our lives. You<lb />cannot turn on the television without seeing at least<lb /><lb />one commercial for a reality show. What happened |<lb /><lb />to scripted television? Has Hollywood really run<lb />out of ideas that they rely strictly on the simple<lb />nature of man? I find it outrageous that television<lb />has become completely overrun by unimaginative |<lb />reality shows.<lb /><lb />Case in point: Seven oeoele entered a house<lb />and were filmed to see what would happen when<lb />people stopped being nice and started being real.?<lb /><lb />Of course, ITm talking about the pilot season of .<lb /><lb />MTVTs The Real World.? Back when this. aired<lb />though, it wasnTt seen so much as reality TV, but<lb />more as a documentary. The Real World? has<lb />continued to air since its 1992 launch, but 10 years<lb />later, the explosion of reality? has hit us. CBS<lb />released Survivor? in 2002 and America lias never<lb />looked back. |<lb /><lb />Almost every channel has a reality show. They<lb />range from romance to documenting a familyTs<lb />life to a myriad of charm schools.? Our chan-<lb />nel surfing has become based around whose life<lb />we find more interesting. Some people canTt get<lb />enough of Lauren Conrad and her catty adventures<lb />on The Hills.? For those with a wild side and a<lb />strong stomach, there is the Discovery ChannelTs<lb />Man vs. Wild.? However, has anyone ever stopped<lb />to think that maybe these so-called shows arenTt<lb />really anything but the slow demobilization of<lb />talent? Probably not. No thought at all goes into<lb />these shows. Some are more interesting than others,<lb />sure. But what has anyone gained by watching<lb />Flavor Flav make out with more than 50 scandalous<lb />women? Nothing.<lb /><lb />In America, we pride ourselves with the fact<lb />that someone in this country can go from rags to<lb />riches. Nevertheless, the people who appear on<lb />these reality shows arenTt doing anything out of<lb />the ordinary or spectacular. At best theyT ve merely<lb /><lb />sold themselves for however many episodes they<lb />star in. However, most of the time they have sold<lb />themselves for pseudo-fame; they arenTt even in<lb />the business for the money. They are just taking<lb />up time on a television show that lacks any sort of<lb />actual creativity.<lb /><lb />_ So, with our airwaves taken over by reality,<lb />you have to wonder what happened to creativity<lb />on television. ItTs awful that most shows have<lb />no scripts, no actors and no talent. These people<lb />make fools of themselves while America points<lb />and laughs. I guess you get what you pay for:<lb />absolutely nothing.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at ~<lb />_ opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />TUESDAY OCTOBER 28, 2008<lb /><lb />4<lb /><lb />f Your Procrastination Destination }<lb /><lb />SOME AMERICANS WORRY OVER STATE OF THE UNION<lb /><lb />eee Ss UNI TT<lb /><lb />AY<lb /><lb />Vee dad<lb /><lb />N\<lb /><lb />n RA<lb /><lb />WELL, TAA WORRIED!<lb /><lb />BUT ITS NICE SEEING<lb />SOMEBODY WHOS HAPPY<lb />FOR A CHANGE /<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />yr oon<lb />to. And, ITve always<lb />loved shopping in a store that manages to not<lb />only smell of disinfectant but also human waste.<lb />Between that and being yelled at by store employ-<lb />ees for being in the way? and never being able to<lb />truly know what the price of anything outside of a<lb />$9.98 DVD is until I get to the register, going into<lb />a Wal-Mart store is always such an adventure.<lb /><lb />You see, my problem is that I donTt feel like I<lb />have any kind of options--only being able to shop at<lb />just one Wal-Mart in town. Now that thereTs going<lb />to be two Wal-Marts within 15 minutes of each<lb />other, I feel like ITve been transplanted to some<lb />kind of metropolitan shopping paradise!<lb /><lb />OK, so I was being a little bit sarcastic there.<lb /><lb />Truth be told, I loathe Wal-Mart. I know, what<lb />a surprise, right? But, I canTt see how anybody can<lb />not be opposed to there being one--let alone two--<lb />Wal-Marts inside their city limits.<lb /><lb />I wonTt even bother trying to win any numbers<lb /><lb />.to my side in the anti-Wal-Mart debate. If you<lb /><lb />shop at Wal-Mart despite their cruel hiring/firing<lb />practices, poor wages, lack of health insurance for<lb />employees, questionable product origins, tricky<lb />pricing to deceive consumers into paying mark-ups<lb />for products they believe are cheaper and other<lb />atrocities, then youTre probably not going to stop<lb />shopping there just because an opinion columnist<lb />at a local college paper doesnTt like them.<lb /><lb />But, I can hope you wonTt shop at the second<lb />Wal-Mart theyTre building in town and prove that<lb />people will not be fooled.<lb /><lb />_ Supporters of the second Wal-Mart say that with<lb />a new Wal-Mart will bring new jobs. Yet, I never<lb />hear of any of these supporters actually working at<lb />a Wal-Mart. From reports online about the massive<lb />turnover Wal-Mart participates in to avoid paying<lb />health care, to itTs rare to non-existent pay raises,<lb />ITm left wondering if people really think that a<lb />three-month stint at Wal-Mart making minimum<lb />wage is really worth it.<lb /><lb />If you feel that a new Wal-Mart will make<lb />shopping easier because the line is too long at the<lb />current Wal-Mart, then donTt shop there anymore.<lb />If youTre annoyed at the poor customer service,<lb />then donTt shop there anymore. If youTre scared of<lb />all the crime that happens after hours, then donTt<lb />shop there anymore. Am I getting a little repeti-<lb />tive here?<lb /><lb />From reading the comments on the WITN Web<lb />site, I see that many of the people annoyed most at<lb />the building of the new Wal-Mart are citizens who<lb /><lb />-will be living adjacent to its land. How can we say<lb /><lb />that a store is really necessary if our own citizens<lb />donTt want the store in their backyards?<lb /><lb />Believe me, I used to live across the street from<lb />the (I guess the term primary? would work here)<lb />Wal-Mart. Between the pollution caused from<lb />shoppers traveling from as far away as Greene Co.,<lb />drug deals occurring behind the store and a shooting<lb />aimed at an interracial couple in the parking lot, ITm<lb />left wondering what cost people are willing to put<lb />up with to save 30 cents on tooth paste. I suppose<lb />the citizens of River Hills will find out soon.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />CHECK YOUR PULSE<lb />COMING NOV. 6<lb /><lb />Elise Phillips .<lb />Editor in Chief<lb /><lb />3 %<lb />Natalie Jurgen Andrea Robertson<lb />News Editor Opinion Editor<lb />Ronnie Woodward ~Jared Jackson<lb /><lb />Sports Editor Asst. On my way back<lb />into Greenville, I passed a<lb />billboard just outside of Pitt<lb />County celebrating ASUTs<lb />most recent national champi-<lb />onship victory. -<lb /><lb />Was this really Mountain-<lb />eer memorabilia residing in<lb /><lb />I could only hope there was<lb />similar sign in Watauga<lb />County reminding those in<lb />the western part of the state<lb />of a certain ECU triumph in<lb />the Hawaii Bowl over media<lb />darling Boise State.<lb /><lb />curiosity and bragging rights,<lb />I say bring the Mountaineers<lb />on. LetTs see how far their<lb />program has really come.<lb />Over the past four years,<lb />ITve cringed when listening<lb />to local fans compare ASUTs<lb />team to ECUTs, entertain the<lb />idea of a top-25 ranking for<lb />the Mountaineers or argue that<lb />quarterback Armanti Edwards<lb />is Heisman-worthy.<lb />ASU has built quite pos-<lb />sibly the best program in<lb />. State, ECU recently<lb />added Appalachian State to its 2009 football schedule.<lb /><lb />When the two teams meet in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium on Sept.<lb />5, it will be ECUTs first game against a Division I-AA opponent<lb />since hosting William &amp; Mary in 2001. The Mountaineers have<lb />the best program in I-AA however, with three-straight national<lb />championships and a season-opening win at Michigan<lb /><lb />in 2007.<lb /><lb />So was this a good decision? Not much in<lb />my opinion.<lb /><lb />Most people know the<lb />Mountaineers not for their '<lb />titles but for their giant killer<lb />status. In 2007, ASU opened<lb />the season by beating Michi-<lb />gan at the Big House, 34-32,<lb />in one of the biggest upsets in<lb />college football history.<lb /><lb />ECU is certainly not on<lb />the same level as a program<lb />like Michigan, so a loss to<lb />the Mountaineers wouldnTt<lb />be as degrading as what the<lb />WolverineTs suffered, but it<lb />wouldnTt be far off.<lb /><lb />Not that I expect ECU to<lb />lose, because I fully believe<lb />we will win: However, if<lb />the Pirates win against the<lb />Mountaineers then they were<lb />supposed to, but if they lose »<lb />then it is simply a devastating<lb />and quite embarrassing early<lb />season loss.<lb /><lb />ItTs alose-lose situation for<lb />the. Pirates. in many regards.<lb /><lb />If itTs an ECU win then<lb />itTs simply another W in the<lb />win column, but a loss could<lb />prove fatal for the rest of the<lb />season and especially hard to<lb />overlook for Bowl representa-<lb />tives when theyTre looking for<lb />participants; no matter how<lb />the Pirates would finish out<lb />the season.<lb /><lb />_ What would you rather<lb />have if youTre a Bowl repre-<lb />sentative, a team that has a loss<lb />to Appalachian State or a team<lb />that has taken a beating at the<lb /><lb /> NO page 9<lb /><lb />-heavy Pirates hit the court<lb /><lb />ROBYN CATES | THE EAST CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />Senior Jasmine Young (3) will be relied upon again this season.<lb /><lb />HART HOLLOMAN<lb /><lb />Tue East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />The ECU womenTs basket-<lb />ball team officially started prac-<lb />tice last week, and this year they<lb />look hungry to challenge for the<lb /><lb />Conference USA title and a berth<lb /><lb />in the NCAA tournament. They |<lb /><lb />open the season Nov. 14 when<lb />they will host Hampton Uni-<lb />versity, and rest assured, these<lb />Pirates will be ready to play.<lb />This yearTs squad will be<lb />led by senior guards Jasmine<lb /><lb />Young and LaCoya Terry, both<lb />preseason All-Conference selec-<lb />tions. Their talent and experi-<lb />ence was ~highlighted by Head<lb />Coach Sharon. Baldwin-Tener.<lb /><lb />Our strength is definitely »<lb /><lb />our guard play with Jasmine and<lb />LaCoya,? said Baldwin-Tener. I<lb /><lb />think we have a lot of experienceT<lb /><lb />there and a lot of talent there.?<lb />Baldwin-Tener was also<lb />quick to point out other areas of<lb />the team that she will be count-<lb />ing on to produce good results.<lb />We also have Allison Spivey<lb />out on the wing; sheTs come<lb />along very well,? she said.<lb />This year, the Lady Pirates<lb />will try to balance out an attack<lb /><lb />that too many times last season "<lb /><lb />became one-dimensional. Young<lb />and Terry both averaged more<lb />than 34 minutes per game last<lb />year as well as being the only<lb />two players to average double<lb />figures in scoring. Add in that<lb />the two also led the team in<lb />assists, and the picture is starting<lb />to get a little clearer.<lb />However, finding produc-<lb />tion from other areas of the<lb />court could happen with more<lb />frequency this season. Spivey<lb />and senior Gabriela Husarova<lb />are experienced and active wing<lb /><lb />players who can also oniitatié<lb />with passing and scoring from<lb />the high post.<lb /><lb />But the Achilles heel of the<lb />~team remains the lack of a domi-<lb /><lb />nant low post presence.<lb /><lb />' The biggest question mark<lb />for us is our post players and<lb />what theyTre going to do,? Bald-<lb />win-Tener said.<lb /><lb />Despite the lack of experi-<lb />ence, Baldwin-Tener was opti-<lb />mistic about the progress her<lb />post players have made since<lb />last season.<lb /><lb />Our post players avi really<lb />conditioned very hard over the<lb />last year,? she said. WeTve<lb />really tried to get in better shape<lb />on the inside. WeTve also been<lb />working on their technique as<lb />well as physical and mental<lb />toughness.<lb /><lb />WeTve got to get better both<lb />defensively and offensively on<lb /><lb />the inside and I think this past<lb /><lb />year has helped our post players<lb />gain a lot of experience that is<lb />going to help us this season.?<lb />The Lady Pirates are cer-<lb />tainly trying to improve on<lb />last seasonTs finish; a mediocre<lb />seventh in the conference and<lb />first round exit in the confer-<lb />ence tournament will not do this<lb /><lb />season as Baldwin-Tener and her<lb />players look to win big.<lb /><lb />Every year as a team itTs<lb />our goal to go to the postsea-<lb />son and this year is no differ-<lb />ent,? Baldwin-Tener said. We<lb />want to win the conference<lb />regular season and tournament,<lb /><lb />and we want to make it to the<lb /><lb />NCAA tournament.?<lb /><lb />And this season she believes<lb />the team has the talent to accom-<lb />plish those goals.<lb /><lb />T think our talent has gone<lb />up since last year,? she said. I<lb />think we are deeper and certainly<lb />the incoming freshmen have<lb /><lb />helped that. We have a very<lb /><lb />talented squad and they should<lb /><lb />play very well this season.?<lb /><lb />ECU has a good chance<lb />to finish in the top half of the<lb />standings and may advance one<lb />or two rounds into the confer-<lb />ence tournament, but their lack<lb />of skill and experience in the<lb />frontcourt could hinder their<lb />success this year. Young and<lb />Terry will get a lot of atten-<lb />tion, but the Lady Pirates will<lb />have to find other players who<lb />can win games.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb /></p>

          <lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ SPORTS<lb /><lb />TUESDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2008<lb /><lb />ECU volleyball ends losing streak<lb /><lb />ECU SID<lb /><lb />After putting forth strong<lb />efforts but falling short in its<lb />last two matches, the ECU vol-<lb />leyball team turned the corner<lb />and got the victory it was look-<lb />ing for on Sunday inside Minges<lb />Coliseum. The Pirates downed<lb />SMU 3-2 (13-25, 25-22, 16-<lb />25, 25-23, 15-13). With the<lb />win, ECU improves to 12-14<lb />overall, including 2-9 in Con-<lb />ference USA action. SMU falls<lb />to 12-13 overall and 4-7 in the<lb />conference. The win also halts<lb />a 10 match losing streak for<lb />ECU, as the team had not won<lb />since defeating Morgan State<lb />on Sept. 20, and is the first for<lb />the Pirates in a five-set match<lb />this season.<lb /><lb />Play in the first set resulted<lb />in a 3-3 tie before SMU was able<lb />to gain a five-point advantage at<lb />10-5. The Mustangs went on to<lb />double the PiratesT score at 12-<lb />6, 16-8 and 20-10 before a late<lb />ECU rally made the final score<lb />25-13 in favor of SMU. Hannah<lb />Fenker led the offense with two<lb /><lb />kills while Trish Monroe paced _<lb /><lb />the defense with six digs.<lb /><lb />The second set went much<lb />more the way of the hosts.<lb />After trailing the Mustangs<lb />3-1 to begin, ECU forced a<lb />4-4 tie before taking a 12-5<lb />lead. SMU answered the Pirate<lb /><lb />surge, winning seven of the .<lb /><lb />next eight points to close the<lb />gap to just two points at 13-11<lb />before forcing a deadlock at 15.<lb />The match was also knotted at<lb />16, 17, 18 and 19 points each,<lb /><lb />after which the Pirates took a<lb /><lb />narrow 21-19 advantage. ECU<lb />held onto the slim lead for the<lb />rest of the set and won 25-22.<lb />Melissa Zentner and Katie Prast<lb />each finished the set with four<lb />kills, while Lizzy Bruin tallied<lb />three. Monroe kept up her fine<lb />defensive play, digging out<lb />seven more balls.<lb /><lb />ECU found itself down<lb />early in the third set, 5-0, but<lb />fought back to trail by just one,<lb />6-5. The teams alternated points<lb />and SMU led 11-10 until win-<lb />ning six of the next eight points<lb />to establish a five-point lead,<lb />17-12. The Mustangs continued<lb />to push points, going on an 8-4<lb />run to close out the set, winning<lb />25-16. The Pirates managed just<lb />four kills total in the set and<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />hit--.216. Monroe again led<lb />the defense with four digs and<lb />Amanda Lutzow also picked<lb />up three.<lb /><lb />A tight score was how the<lb />fourth set started, as the larg-<lb />est lead either team held at the<lb />start of the set was three points<lb />by SMU at 7-4. The Mustangs<lb />extended their advantage to<lb />four at 10-6 before ECU made a<lb />comeback. The Pirates fought to<lb />tie the score at 11 before taking<lb />a two-point lead of their own<lb />at 15-13. SMU. answered the<lb />Pirate rally, knotting the score<lb />at 17 points each. After a 19-19<lb /><lb />score, a Zentner kill gave the<lb />Pirates a lead they would not<lb />let go of, despite the Mustangs<lb />closing to within one at 24-23.<lb />A Bruin and Fenker block gave<lb />ECU the final point it needed in<lb />winning the set 25-23. Zentner<lb />pounded down five kills in the<lb />set and Erica Banning recorded<lb />three while Monroe and Fenker<lb />tied for the lead in digs with<lb />five each.<lb /><lb />In the final set the score<lb />was tied at points one through<lb />nine until ECU won three points<lb />in a row to grab a slim 12-9<lb />advantage. SMU won the next<lb /><lb />point to make the score 12-10,<lb />but ECU responded by again<lb />winning back-to-back points,<lb />establishing a 14-10 lead. Not<lb />giving in, the Mustangs took<lb />two points of their own to make<lb />the score 14-13 in favor of the<lb />hosts. One final kill by Bruin<lb />gave the Pirates the last point<lb />and the set victory, 15-13.<lb /><lb />It was indeed a team effort<lb />for the Pirates in the match as<lb />Zentner was the only player to<lb />record double-digit kills, with<lb />12. Bruin and Prast each tallied<lb />eight and nine of the 11 players<lb />in the match that recorded at<lb /><lb />least one kill. Monroe finished<lb />her day with 23 digs and is now<lb />in fifth-place on the Conference<lb />USA digs in a career leader-<lb />board. She has now recorded<lb />1,761 digs over her four-year<lb />career. Katie Koop also finished<lb />with 10 digs and 40 assists,<lb />giving her two double-dou-<lb />bles on the season. Bruin also<lb />helped the defense, collecting<lb />seven total blocks, including<lb />four solos.<lb /><lb />ECU takes a break pitil<lb /><lb />Friday, when it resumes play<lb />with a match at UAB. The<lb />PiratesT second-consecutive<lb />draw pushes their record to 11-<lb />3-4 overall and 6-0-4 in confer-<lb />ence play while the Tigers are<lb />now 11-4-2 on the season and<lb />7-2-1 in C-USA.<lb /><lb />| The tie means that ECU can<lb />clinch no worse than a share of<lb />the league title with a win over<lb /><lb />Marshall at Bunting Field on .<lb /><lb />Friday. The Pirates could also<lb />earn the championship outright<lb />with a win and a Memphis loss<lb />or tie at UAB on Thursday. ECU<lb />would also take the No. 1 seed<lb />with a win Friday due to earning<lb />two ties against UCF and Colo-<lb />rado College while the Tigers<lb /><lb />Hilton Greenville<lb /><lb />Tomorrow starts here.<lb /><lb />" East eas University "<lb /><lb />The Gollega of Business<lb /><lb />presen Ts<lb /><lb />The Honorable<lb /><lb />David M. However, it<lb />was sophomore Bailey Wilcox<lb />who put the Pirates ahead in the<lb /><lb />30th minute. Freshman Amanda<lb />Malkiewicz took a run down<lb /><lb />the right side of the field and<lb />slipped a ball past the defense,<lb />which found Wilcox, who pow-<lb />ered the ball into the net past<lb />Tiger keeper Jordan Boyle for<lb />her first goal of the season.<lb />Memphis would equalize just<lb />a minute and a half later, when<lb />Elizabeth Hildebrandt crossed<lb />the ball from the right side and<lb /><lb />found the head of Krista Turner, |<lb /><lb />who put it into the back of the<lb /><lb />net past a diving ECU keeper,<lb /><lb />senior Amber Campbell.<lb />Despite added pressure, the<lb /><lb />Tigers could not score for the<lb /><lb />remainder of the stanza as the<lb />game balanced, 1-1 at halftime.<lb />Memphis out-shot the Pirates<lb />14-2 in the first half while fouls<lb />were even at four.<lb /><lb />A duo of corners won by<lb />ECU in the first 10 minutes of<lb />the second interval proved valu-<lb /><lb />game,?<lb /><lb />able, as senior Blair Heffner and<lb />sophomore Amanda Broz both<lb />beat Boyle, three minutes apart,<lb />to give the Pirates a 3-1 lead.<lb />Senior Nicole Moore picked up<lb />an assist on.both plays.<lb /><lb />Eleven minutes later, the<lb />Tigers rallied, scoring goals by<lb />Kylie Hayes and Lizzy Simo-<lb />nin, just five minutes apart to<lb />even the contest at 3-3 and send<lb />it to overtime. The shot margin<lb />was much closer in the second<lb />half, as Memphis unleashed<lb />eight shots as compared to<lb />five for ECU.<lb /><lb />The Tigers had a great<lb />chance to end the game in the<lb />first overtime period, but Simo-<lb />nin hit the crossbar and was<lb />unable to get to the rebound as<lb />the Pirate defense cleared.<lb /><lb />On Friday, ECU rallied<lb />twice to earn a valuable point<lb />on the road as it tied UAB,<lb /><lb />-2-2,, at West Campus Field in<lb /><lb />Birmingham.<lb />The tie ensured that the<lb />Pirates will end the season<lb /><lb />unbeaten on the road in C-USA,<lb /><lb />a program first. __<lb /><lb />UAB scored quickly, receiv-<lb />ing a strike from Laura McCalla<lb />in the eighth minute to put ECU<lb />behind for the first time in con-<lb />ference play, a span of eight<lb />games. However, the Pirates<lb />would equalize 11 minutes later<lb />when junior Alexis Foltz scored<lb />her team-leading fifth goal in<lb />C-USA matches, an unassisted<lb />tally that tied the match at 1-1.<lb /><lb />This. was a hard fought<lb />Donnenwirth said.<lb /><lb />TRAVIS BARTLETT |<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />UAB played with a lot of<lb />energy and emotion and we<lb />battled hard for the tie. Madison<lb />scored a great goal to tie it up<lb />and Amber came up with some<lb />big saves.?<lb /><lb />The Blazers out-shot ECU<lb />8-4 in the first half while also<lb />committing more fouls, 5-<lb />2. Pirate netminder Amber<lb />Campbell came up with three<lb />saves as opposed to her counter-<lb />partTs two.<lb /><lb />ECU allowed UAB eight<lb />consecutive shots to begin the<lb />second stanza and the Blazers<lb />capitalized on the eighth chance<lb />when Tiffini Turpin scored to<lb />put her side in front, 2-1. It is the<lb />first time that the Pirates have<lb />allowed more than one goal in<lb />conference play. Just when it<lb />looked like ECU would be sent<lb />home empty-handed, a senior<lb />stepped up and gave the Pirates<lb />new life. Just six minutes after<lb />the Blazers went ahead, Madi-<lb />son Keller took a ball from<lb />fellow senior Savanna Russo<lb />and buried it into the back of<lb />the net, evening the score line<lb />at two.<lb /><lb />Each squad recorded four<lb />shots in the overtime, but none<lb />of the chances found their mark<lb />as the contest ended at 2-2.<lb />UAB sorely out-shot ECU 23-9<lb />while Campbell made a season-<lb />high 12 saves.<lb /><lb />ECU closes out the regular<lb />season on Halloween Friday, as<lb />it takes on Marshall at Bunting<lb />Field. The contest is scheduled<lb />for 3 p.m.<lb /><lb />NO continued from 7<lb /><lb />hands of Oklahoma? Which is<lb />exactly my next point.<lb /><lb />Before. the ECU-ASU pair-<lb />ing was made public, rumors<lb />swirled on Internet message<lb />boards and the radio that ECU<lb />and Oklahoma had a deal in place<lb />where the Pirates would travel to<lb />Norman, OK next seasonT and<lb />the Sooners would travel to<lb /><lb />~Greenville in 2013..One of the<lb /><lb />reasons this deal supposedly fell<lb />though is because ECU Athletics<lb />Director Terry Holland believed<lb />that Oklahoma would write a<lb />large sum check in 2013 and say<lb /><lb />thanks but no thanks, leaving<lb /><lb />the Pirates with another void in<lb />the schedule.<lb /><lb />I believe that if you have the<lb />chance to play a program like<lb />Oklahoma you should jump on<lb />it. ItTs not everyday that you get<lb />a chance to travel to one of the<lb /><lb />nationTs truly elite college foot-<lb /><lb />~ball programs and get a chance<lb /><lb />at knocking them off- albeit a<lb />small one.<lb /><lb />However, even a Joss for<lb />ECU would be beneficial in<lb />the long term given the certain<lb />media attention the game would<lb /><lb />attract after the PiratesT huge.<lb />upsets to begin this year. Then<lb /><lb />if they were to play well against<lb /><lb />the Sooners, ECU would have<lb /><lb />momentum to build upon to<lb />carry them the rest of the season.<lb />The mentality of, Well, we lost<lb />but we hung with them so we can<lb />play with anybody in the nation?<lb />could set in.<lb /><lb />Another reason why: the<lb />Oklahoma deal didnTt happen<lb /><lb />is that it wouldTve taken away a<lb /><lb />home game for the 2009 season.<lb /><lb />All of ECUTs non-conference |<lb /><lb />games would be against BCS<lb /><lb />opponents, with three being on<lb />the road. The Pirates would have<lb />to play at Oklahoma, at North<lb /><lb />- Carolina and at West Virginia,<lb /><lb />with the only non-conference<lb />home game being Virginia Tech.<lb />While that is certainly a tall task,<lb />it is what the Pirate program must .<lb />do in order to one day hopefully<lb /><lb />~jump in a BCS conference.<lb /><lb />When it comes down to it,<lb />the ECU-ASU matchup is just<lb />not a good one for the Pirate<lb />program. It attracts vitually no<lb /><lb />_ media attention outside the state<lb /><lb />of North Carolina and at the<lb />end of the day ECU has either<lb />won or lost against an inferior<lb />program.<lb /><lb />. This is not the way that<lb />Holland and ECU coach Skip<lb />Holtz have wanted to build the<lb />program the last four years " so<lb />why start now?<lb /><lb />YES continued from 7<lb /><lb />some no-name school from the<lb />depths of I-AA. This is an in-<lb /><lb />state rival that has a winning<lb /><lb />record against our program.<lb /><lb />Throughout its low profile<lb />history, ECU can relate to being<lb />avoided by other schools because<lb />of fear by the other party. ASU<lb />has earned the right to be able to<lb />play I-A schools in its home state<lb />and beyond.<lb /><lb />One of the pros of sched- 7<lb /><lb />uling home-and-home series<lb />against teams like Virginia Tech<lb />and West Virginia is selling out<lb /><lb />- Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.<lb /><lb />The Fick? might not reach<lb />full capacity against ASU, but it<lb />will certainly come close. This<lb />game will have the second-best<lb />atmosphere of the home season,<lb />next to the Virginia Tech game.<lb /><lb />The Mountaineers are well<lb /><lb />known for packing Kidd-Brewer<lb />Stadium in Boone and should<lb /><lb />easily fill the Dowdy visitors sec-<lb /><lb />tion with black"not to mention<lb />the countless ASU students who<lb />will undoubtedly find their way<lb />into the ECU student section for<lb />the east versus west battle.<lb /><lb />Next season, ECU is already<lb />scheduled to face Virginia Tech<lb />at home and West Virginia and<lb />North Carolina on the road.<lb />Adding a fourth top-25 caliber<lb /><lb />team would do the Pirates no |<lb />favors, especially if that game "<lb /><lb />was played on the road.<lb /><lb />ECU stands a much better .<lb /><lb />chance of getting a win against<lb />the Mountaineers in Greenville<lb />than say, beating Oklahoma in<lb /><lb />~ Norman, Ok.<lb /><lb />At some point, ECU needed<lb /><lb />to start scheduling games it<lb /><lb />could legitimately expect to win.<lb />ASU is no pushover, but this is a<lb />game the Pirates = to expect<lb />to win.<lb /><lb />TulsaTs Grecia enee<lb />schedule this season consists of<lb />North Texas, New Mexico, Cen-<lb />tral Arkansas and Arkansas. That ©<lb />kind of schedule is getting them a<lb />step closer to a BCS game.<lb /><lb />ITm not saying ECU<lb />should follow suit, but one less<lb />matchup against a powerhouse<lb />wonTt hurt.<lb /><lb />What does ECU stand to gain<lb />by playing this game? A win. The<lb />Pirates have the same thing to<lb />lose in this game as they do any<lb />other. If ECU canTt beat ASU on<lb />its home turf, the team is facing<lb />more problems than whether<lb />or not the game should have<lb />been scheduled.<lb /><lb /></p>
