<lb />4:<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN * NEWS<lb /><lb />THURSDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2008<lb /><lb />Stocks plunge anew as data points to recession<lb /><lb />AP<lb /><lb />Investors agonizing over<lb />a faltering economy sent the<lb />stock market plunging all over<lb />again Wednesday after a stream<lb />of disheartening data convinced<lb />Wall Street that a recession, if<lb />not already here, is inevitable.<lb />The market<lb />s despair propelled<lb />the Dow Jones industrials down<lb />733 points to their second-larg-<lb />est point loss ever, and the major<lb />indexes all lost at least 7 per-<lb />cent.<lb /><lb />The slide meant that the Dow,<lb />which fell 76 points on Tuesday,<lb />has given back all but 127 points<lb />of its record 936-point gain of<lb />Monday, which came on opti-<lb />mism about the banking system<lb />in response to the government<lb />s<lb />plans to invest up to $250 billion<lb />in financial institutions.<lb /><lb />Wednesday<lb />s sell-off began<lb />after the government<lb />s report that<lb />retail sales plunged in September<lb />by 1.2 percent " almost double<lb />the 0.7 percent analysts expected<lb />" made it clear that consumers<lb />are reluctant to spend amid a<lb />shaky economy and a punishing<lb />stock market.<lb /><lb />The Commerce Department<lb />report was sobering because<lb />consumer spending accounts<lb />for more than two-thirds of U.S.<lb />economic activity. The reading<lb />came as Wall Street was refocus-<lb />ing its attention on the faltering<lb />economy following stepped up<lb />government efforts to revive the<lb />stagnant lending markets.<lb /><lb />' Then, during the afternoon,<lb />the release of the Beige Book,<lb />the assessment of business con-<lb />ditions from the Federal Reserve,<lb />added to investors<lb /> angst. The<lb />report found that the economy<lb />continued to slow in the early<lb />fall as financial and credit market<lb />problems took a turn for the<lb /><lb />worse. The central bank<lb />s report<lb />supported the market<lb />s belief that<lb />difficulties in obtaining loans<lb />have choked growth in wide<lb />swaths of the economy.<lb /><lb />Even though the bank-<lb />ing sector may be returning to<lb />normal, the economy still isn<lb />t.<lb /><lb />' The economy continues to face<lb /><lb />a host of other problems,? said<lb />Doug Roberts, chief investment<lb />strategist at ChannelCapital-<lb />Research.com. We<lb />re in for a<lb />tough ride.? .<lb /><lb />Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke<lb />offered a similar opinion, warn-<lb />ing in a speech Wednesday that<lb />patching up the credit markets<lb />won<lb />t provide an instantaneous<lb />jolt to the economy.<lb /><lb />Stabilization of the financial<lb />markets is a critical first step,<lb />but even if they stabilize as we<lb />hope they will, broader economic<lb />recovery will not happen right<lb />away,? he told the Economic<lb />Club of New York.<lb /><lb />Analysts have warned that<lb />the market will see continued<lb />volatility as,it tries to recover<lb />from the devastating losses of<lb />the last month, including the<lb />nearly 2,400-point plunge in the<lb />Dow over the eight sessions that<lb />ended Friday. Such turbulence<lb />is typical after a huge decline,<lb />but the market<lb />s anxiety about<lb />the economy. was also expected<lb />to cause gyrations in the weeks<lb />and months ahead.<lb /><lb />Selling accelerated in the<lb />last hour of trading, a common<lb />occurrence during the eight days<lb /><lb />of heavy declines. One reason<lb /><lb />for the heavy selling: Mutual<lb />funds need to unload stock to pay<lb /><lb />. investors who are bailing out of<lb /><lb />the market.<lb /><lb />Investors apparently have .<lb /><lb />come to believe that Monday<lb />s<lb />big rebound over the bank-<lb />ing sector was overdone given<lb /><lb />Many Women. We<lb />re<lb />still faced with the fact that the<lb />economy is slowing and earnings<lb />aren<lb />t very good.?<lb /><lb />Doubts about the economy<lb />were already surfacing in Tues-<lb /><lb />-day<lb />s session, when investors<lb /><lb />halted an early rally and began<lb />collecting profits from stocks<lb /> big<lb />Monday advance. Wednesday<lb />s<lb />data confirmed the market<lb />s fears<lb />that the economy is likely to<lb />remain weak for some time, and<lb />that corporate profits are likely<lb />to suffer.<lb /><lb />Mark Coffelt, portfolio man-<lb />ager at Empiric Funds, said<lb />moves by European and U.S.<lb />government officials to begin<lb />investing directly in banks are<lb />easing worries about credit. But<lb />the steep pullback in stocks that<lb />began last month after the credit<lb />markets lurched to a near stand-<lb />still has now created worries<lb />that consumers will spend less<lb />after seeing the value of their<lb />retirement accounts and other<lb />investments drop.<lb /><lb />Markets abhor uncertainty<lb />and so we got a lot of that<lb /><lb />resolved this weekend and we<lb />got the reward Monday but now<lb />people are saying ~OK, now what<lb />is the economy going to do?<lb />?<lb />We<lb />re definitely going to<lb />get a slowdown from the terror<lb /><lb />. of going through that,? Coffelt<lb /><lb />said.<lb /><lb />The Dow ended down 733.08,<lb />or 7.87 percent, at 8,577.91. On<lb />Monday, Sept. 29, the Dow had<lb />its largest point drop 777.68.<lb />Wednesday<lb />s percentage drop<lb />was the biggest since the 8.04<lb />percent of Oct. 26, 1987, which<lb />followed Black Monday, the Oct.<lb />19 crash that sent the blue chips<lb />down 22.6 percent in a single<lb />session.<lb /><lb />The Dow<lb />s massive decline<lb />Wednesday marks its 20th triple-<lb />digit move in 23 sessions.<lb /><lb />Broader stock indicators also<lb />skidded. The Standard & Poor<lb />s<lb />500 index fell 90.17, or 9.03 per-<lb /><lb />cent, to 907:84, and the Nasdaq<lb /><lb />composite index fell 150.68, or<lb />8.47 percent, to- 1,628.33.<lb /><lb />It was the lowest close<lb />for the Nasdaq since June 30,<lb />2003, when the index finished at<lb />1,622.80. The Dow and the S&P<lb />500 are also at mid-2003 levels.<lb /><lb />The Dow is down 39.4 per-<lb />cent from its Oct. 9, 2007 closing<lb />high of 14,164.53. The S&P is<lb />down 42 percent from its high<lb />at the same time of 1,565.15.<lb />The Nasdaq<lb />s record high was<lb />5,048.62, during the dot-com<lb />boom that swelled the index to<lb />levels it has not come close to<lb />regaining after the high- -tech<lb />bubble burst.<lb /><lb />U.S. stock market paper losses<lb />came to $1.1 trillion Wednesday,<lb />according to the Dow Jones<lb />Wilshire 5000 Composite Index,<lb />which represents nearly all stocks<lb /><lb />University<lb />|Haircutters<lb />Men<lb />s Cut and Style Shop<lb /><lb />$8 Men's Cut |<lb /><lb />|B hans ee<lb /><lb />Serving ECU and the community since 1982<lb /><lb />Howell St. ' Back enterance to Pirates Place<lb />Extra parking on Howell St.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />SOCIA<lb /><lb />A stock broker agonizes over the downward spiral of the market.<lb /><lb />traded in America.<lb /><lb />Wednesday<lb />s losses came<lb />as investors were hoping the<lb />market would recover from<lb />last week<lb />s terrible run, which<lb />erased about $2.4 trillion in<lb />shareholder wealth and brought<lb />the Dow to its lowest level since<lb />April 2003. The tumble occurred<lb />amid a seize-up in lending stem-<lb />ming from a lack of trust among<lb />institutions in response to the<lb />bankruptcy of investment bank<lb />Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc.<lb />and the failure of Washington<lb />Mutual Inc., which had been the<lb />nation<lb />s largest thrift.<lb /><lb />The credit markets have been<lb />showing tentative signs of recov-<lb />ery, though they remain strained.<lb />The three-month Treasury bill<lb />on Wednesday was yielding<lb />0.20 percent, down from 0.30<lb />percent on Tuesday. Overall,<lb />yields remain low, showing that<lb />demand is so high that inves-<lb />tors are willing to earn meager<lb />returns as long as their principal<lb />is preserved.<lb /><lb />The yield on the benchmark<lb />10-year Treasury note, which<lb /><lb />moves opposite its price, fell to<lb />3.98 percent from 4.03 percent<lb />late Tuesday.<lb /><lb />About 350 stocks advanced<lb />at the New York Stock Exchange,<lb />while about 2,800 declined.<lb /><lb />- Consolidated volume came to 6.4<lb /><lb />billion shares, down from 7.97<lb />billion traded Tuesday.<lb /><lb />The Russell 2000 index of<lb />smaller companies fell 52.54, or<lb />9.47 percent, to 502.11.<lb /><lb />Light, sweet crude fell $4.09 ©<lb />to settle at $74.54 per barrel<lb />on the New York Mercantile<lb />Exchange.<lb /><lb />In Asian trading, Hong<lb />Kong<lb />s Hang Seng Index lost<lb />nearly 5 percent after rising more<lb />than 13 percent the previous two<lb />days. Markets in Australia, South<lb />Korea, China, India and Singa-<lb />pore also sank. Japan<lb />s Nikkei<lb />225 index, however, ended up 1.1<lb />percent after soaring 14 percent<lb />in the previous session.<lb /><lb />In Europe, Britain<lb />s FTSE<lb />100 fell 7.08 percent, Germany<lb />s<lb />DAX index fell 6.49 percent,<lb />and France<lb />s CAC-40 fell 6.82<lb />percent.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Chill with your friends!<lb />Hearty Sandwiches!<lb />, Delicious Soups!<lb />F reshby Tossed Salads!<lb />Espresso Drinks!<lb />Bagels, Breads<lb />ef Pastries!<lb /><lb />516 Greenville Blvd.<lb /><lb />Phone: 252-317-8787<lb />Fax: 252-317-8786<lb /><lb />Monday-Saturday:<lb />6:30am - 9:00pm<lb />~ Sunday:<lb />7:30am - 9:00pm<lb /><lb />Buy One, Get One FREE |<lb /><lb />| Sandwich, Salad, or You-Pick-Two |<lb />of equal or lesser value.<lb /><lb />Valid at Panera Bread Locations in Greenville. <lb />lO)<lb /><lb />Opin<lb /><lb />Reject rage,<lb />embrace<lb />empiricism<lb /><lb />Time for some raw opinion<lb /><lb />JON DOUGHERTY<lb />Tue East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />_ | have heard a lot about rage and anger this<lb />week. Primarily, the focus has been on a couple<lb />of GOP rallies for John McCain recently, where<lb />individual question askers have discussed not<lb />necessarily the state of the nation, not necessarily<lb />any specific issue at hand, but anger and rage at<lb />the prospect of a Barack Obama presidency. They<lb />claim he is not a true American, he does not love his<lb />country; some go so far as to claim he is an enemy<lb />saboteur, sent to lead us into despair.<lb /><lb />This is similar to the rage expressed by Demo-<lb />cratic supporters in 2004 at the specter of reelecting<lb />George W. Bush after the widely acknowledged<lb />botching of the war in Iraq. At the time, and<lb />even to this day, some will say there are only two<lb />explanations for Bush<lb />s actions: either he is stupid<lb />or evil.<lb /><lb />The language being invoked in these types<lb />of descriptions reviles those with different politi-<lb />cal preferences as those interested in nothing but<lb />personal benefit against general disarray. Both<lb />camps must be included because it is extremists<lb />of all types that are guilty.<lb /><lb />We cannot have agreement as a prerequisite<lb />for political discourse. People must come to deci-<lb />sions with the good faith that all are interested in<lb />a strong, prosperous future for America, whatever<lb />their vision of what our country may be. Obama<lb />is not a.terrorist because he knows a guy who was,<lb />even if he worked with him. McCain is not the<lb />same guy as Bush, even though they are of the same<lb />party. When we begin political dialogue from the<lb />viewpoint of all with me are good, all against me<lb />are evil,? we leave room only for hatred and enmity,<lb />not compromise. We are a country that was built<lb />on the diversity of opinion, on the right to be seen<lb />as different, but worthy.<lb /><lb />Our political relationships to each other have<lb />roughened within a crust of ideological partisan-<lb />ship.<lb /><lb />My advice, my plea to my fellow Americans,<lb />and more narrowly, my fellow Pirates with whom<lb />I attend class, and debate the future of the world, is<lb />this: let your reason guide you. Allow yourself to<lb />treat each situation dispassionately, uniquely, hold-<lb />ing only in view the end you wish for your future<lb />and those of your children and all the available,<lb />empirical facts about how to get there, whether they<lb />be to your liking or not. Allow yourself permission<lb />to consider, perhaps even incorporate, new view-<lb />points--based on evidence-- about how to achieve<lb />a happy tomorrow.<lb /><lb />Do not bind yourself to a course of action<lb />through subscription to a gamut of political values<lb />handed down to you by the choice of your fore-<lb />bears or the tenets of a rigidly defined philosophy.<lb />Believe especially in the same basic hope for the<lb />future of those that disagree with and are different<lb />from us. Do not allow yourself to be disillusioned<lb />by the attempts of those with power and influence<lb />to jade your sense of community, to deflect you<lb />from truth, to blind you with emotional, cynical,<lb />ideological appeals.<lb /><lb />There can be no such thing as total agreement<lb />amongst a population of 300 million people. In this<lb /><lb />mix, some will be hard-liners who will not be will- |<lb /><lb />ing to discuss or compromise their positions on any<lb />issue. My plea to all, young and old, Republican<lb />and Democrat, ideologues and ambivalents, is to<lb />recognize each other as citizen and sibling, with all<lb />futures bound together; when all realize they face<lb />the same end as a country, they establish common<lb />ground upon which real national community can<lb />be built.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Gaming outside<lb />of the box<lb /><lb />JASON M. WALLACE<lb /><lb />THE East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />I have been trying to set up a game of Dungeons<lb />and Dragons for some friends and I to play since<lb />August. Besides taking time to learn the rules<lb />and working around everyone<lb />s schedule, finding<lb />players is a tough process. It may be because they<lb />are trying to avoid the air of cultural nerdiness that<lb />comes with Dungeons and Dragons. It may also<lb />be that young people<lb />s imaginations have been<lb />destroyed by the digital game age.<lb /><lb />Tabletop games compared 1 to console waded<lb />games are like an open-ended project to a set of<lb />math problems. Tabletop games allow for players<lb />to be creative and resourceful while video games<lb />force players to resolve situations within a fixed<lb />set of rules.<lb /><lb />For those who have not experienced a game of<lb />Dungeons and Dragons, and other similar tabletop<lb />games, it is a popular fantasy role-playing game<lb />run by two components. Half of the game relies<lb />on a set of numeric rules controlled by throwing<lb />dice. The other half relies on the imagination of<lb />the storyteller or the dungeon master, who narrates<lb />the fantasy-based story. A dungeon master will<lb />describe a setting and scenario, and the characters<lb />will work together navigating through the setting<lb />to accomplish the objective however they see fit.<lb />By being able to make unique choices through col-<lb />laborating with other players, tabletop games allow<lb />the players to be much more creative in constructing<lb />a gaming situation that is much more eye<lb />than a video game.<lb /><lb />A common day video game (mainly EUS<lb />on first-person shooters, action and role-playing<lb />games) sets up a rendered setting, a situation and<lb /><lb />THURSDAY OCTOBER 16,2008 5<lb /><lb />{ Your Procrastination Destination }<lb /><lb />7 ee<lb /><lb />- EVERY DAY SOME RICH DUDE DROVE BY AND<lb />CALLED ME A BUM! The television screen dis-<lb />plays the character<lb />s setting and most of the time the<lb />character itself. The story is usually set and really<lb />inflexible. After stripping a player of all creative<lb />control and outlook of the game, all that is left is<lb />hours of learning complex button combinations<lb />in order to move the character from one point to<lb />the next to advance the in-game story to a usually<lb />predictable, classic Hollywood movie type ending.<lb />Because of the lack of choice in video games, I<lb />don<lb />t find them to be nearly as enjoyable as the<lb />uniqueness of a tabletop game.<lb /><lb />In the essay, Play as a Function of Toy Struc-<lb />ture and Fantasy Predisposition,? by Mary Ann<lb />Spencer Pulaski, she found that if children were<lb />given minimally structured toys like paint, clay<lb />and simple rag dolls, as compared to highly struc-<lb />tured toys like Barbie<lb />s and G.I. Joes, then they<lb />had greater imaginative output. She also quoted<lb />cognitive psychologist J.L. Singer by saying that<lb /><lb />fantasy is a creative, cognitive skill associated with<lb />the ability to control impulses and to delay grati-<lb />fication.? Therefore, I feel that gamers are able to<lb />benefit more from the opportunities to make more<lb />creative choices with tabletop games.<lb /><lb />I feel that tabletop games are more applicable to<lb />real life than a video game could ever be. In Dun-<lb />geons and Dragons, players learn to cooperate with<lb />others at a table in order to accomplish a scenario<lb />objective successfully. Just as in Monopoly, where<lb />players negotiate deals for property, Dungeons and<lb />Dragons allows a person to work with others to<lb />advance the story of his or her life. Video games<lb />only offer the same situation that gradually becomes<lb />more difficult as the player moves from one level<lb />to the next, like a person moving up the corporate<lb />ladder at a place of employment.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Social security<lb />1S not so secure<lb /><lb />LEWIS CARROLL<lb />THE East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />Prepare to work until you die.<lb />For anyone unaware, Social Security is a sup- <lb />plemental retirement system that was implemented<lb />in 1935 as part of Roosevelt<lb />s New Deal.? The<lb />system is funded by dedicated payroll taxes, with<lb /><lb />the purpose of securing a threshold where anyone<lb /><lb />who has paid into the system. However, according<lb />to Bruce Bartlett, a senior fellow with the National<lb />Center for Policy Analysis, by 2014 current tax<lb />revenues will be insufficient to pay current benefits.<lb />By 2029, the Social Security trust fund is projected<lb />to be exhausted. Unavoidably, a change must be<lb />implemented. That change is switching the current<lb />Social Security system to the Cato Plan.<lb />Demographic issues, such as longer life expec-<lb />tancy by 12 to 15 years, and a falling fertility rate<lb />from 3.6 children per woman to 1.9 as of 2020,<lb />have a strong negative impact on Social Security<lb />as well. A fertility rate of 2.1 would be needed just<lb />to replace the existing population. Numbers alone<lb />cannot be relied on to fix the problem, but a more<lb />lucrative means of supplying funds. I agree with a<lb />widely considered solution to the problem, which is<lb />switching to a system of personal investments.<lb />Many people think that the stock market<lb />would simply be too risky, but that just isn<lb />t so.<lb /><lb />_ Throughout the last 80 years, private investments<lb /><lb />have earned an average return of nearly 8 percent.<lb />This period includes the Great Depression, World<lb />War II, several smaller wars, the dot-com decline<lb />as well as more recent problems. Workers cur-<lb />rently can expect a return on their Social Security<lb />taxes of 1.5 percent or less. When it comes to the<lb />aspect of benefits, the stock market is no less risky<lb />than politics. Congress can choose at any time to<lb />change benefits, because retirees have no legal<lb />right to them.<lb /><lb />According to the Cato Plan, individuals would<lb />be able to invest their half of payroll, which is 6.2 .<lb />percentage points through individual accounts.<lb />There will be a limited series of investment options,<lb />with a life cycle fund as a default mechanism.<lb />The remaining 6.2 percentage points will be used<lb />to fund the transition costs, as well as survivors<lb /><lb />benefits. Those who choose to remain in the cur-<lb />rent Social Security system would receive whatever<lb />level of benefits available to them with existing<lb />levels of taxation. This system would give people<lb />a chance to convert to a better system, while not.<lb />excluding those resistant to change.<lb /><lb />The time to switch from Social Security to the<lb />Cato Plan is now. When considering risk manage-<lb />ment and rate of returns, there is no comparison. For<lb />every year after this one, reforming the system will<lb />cost American taxpayers an additional $600 billion.<lb /><lb />_ With. Social,Security running into deficits within<lb /><lb />12 years, time is limited. We should be thinking<lb />not only about the well-being of our parents and<lb />ourselves, but also about beneficial systems that<lb />can be established for our children and future<lb />generations.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />CHECK YOUR PULSE<lb />CON TINCHN TOs<lb /><lb />Elise Phillips<lb />Editor in Chief<lb /><lb />Andrea Robertson<lb />Opinion Editor<lb /><lb />Natalie Jurgen<lb />News Editor<lb /><lb />Jared Jackson<lb />Asst. They<lb /> ve never deviated<lb />too far from what they became<lb />famous for: guitar-heavy alterna-<lb />tive rock. Dig Out Your Soul is no<lb />different, as it follows the same<lb />format with remarkable effect.<lb />From start to finish, each song<lb />operates as its own little world.<lb />Rarely do the songs build to<lb />gargantuan force; rarely do they<lb />shift radically halfway through.<lb />Instead, they start and end the<lb /><lb />same way with an almost drone-<lb /><lb />like? feel. Falling Down? may<lb />be one of the best songs they<lb />ve<lb />done in years, with an underlying<lb />" organ piece overlapped by Chris<lb />Sharrock<lb />s rollicking drum per-<lb />formance. Rockin<lb /> the Suburbs (his<lb />first solo album) showed him as<lb />the spunky nerd poking fun at<lb />MTV-watching high school kids,<lb />and Songs for Silverman had a<lb />calmer, father-like tone. On Way<lb />to Normal, Ben Folds has steeped<lb />into the more absurd, sometimes<lb />irrational anger at the world. The<lb />most marked difference, though,<lb />is the use of electronics. No track<lb />better emphasizes that than Free<lb />Coffee,? which is a fine track,<lb />but being surrounded by piano-<lb />heavy songs makes it feel out<lb />of place. The peak of the album<lb />is its center, the string-oriented<lb />Cologne,? which harks back to<lb />the days of songs like Army?<lb />from Ben Folds<lb /> Five. This may<lb />be a transitional period for Folds,<lb />who, even with a less-than-<lb />enthusiastic entry here, is always<lb />sure to deliver a few wonderful<lb />moments.<lb /><lb />¢ ECU FACULTY & STAFF<lb /><lb />RECEIVE A 25% FOOD<lb /><lb />OPEN TILL 10 PM 7 DAYS A WEEK W/ ID:<lb /><lb />°12 DELICIOUS COMBOS<lb /><lb />«BREAKFAST ALL DAY<lb />10 AM WEEKENDS<lb /><lb />_ Blitzen Trapper " Furr, 3.5<lb />out of 5 -<lb /><lb />Imitating an artist isn<lb />t<lb />always smiled upon, and emu-<lb />lating them even less so. <lb />12<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN *SPORTS<lb /><lb />THURSDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2008<lb /><lb />Virginia adds to ECU<lb />s wounds<lb /><lb />JARED JACKSON<lb />Tue East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />In college football, the<lb />difference between. win-<lb />ning and losing is a very<lb />fine ling.7 =.<lb /><lb />That<lb />s what ECU coach<lb />Skip Holtz said in a press<lb />conference Monday.<lb /><lb />The Pirates have made<lb />the former a habit of late,<lb />dropping a non-conference<lb />contest 35-20 to Virginia<lb />[3-3, 1-1 ACC] last Satur-<lb />day in Charlottesville. The<lb />loss is the third straight for<lb />ECU [3-3, 1-1 Conference<lb />USA], which was ranked<lb />No. 14 in the nation a little<lb />over a month ago.<lb /><lb />The Cavs, fresh off a<lb />31-0 mauling of Mary-<lb />land, have looked like a<lb />completely different team<lb />the past two weeks since<lb />taking a 31-3 defeat at the<lb /><lb />hands of Duke three weeks |<lb /><lb />ago. ECU, on the other<lb />hand, has been plagued by<lb />the injury bug and hasn<lb />t<lb />looked like its former self<lb />since losing a heartbreaker<lb />in overtime to N.C. State<lb />on Sept. 20.<lb /><lb />It was a frustrating and<lb />disappointing loss for this<lb />football team. I thought<lb />the team played extremely<lb />hard,? Holtz said of the<lb />UVA game.<lb /><lb /> UVA owned the first<lb />half of the contest, totaling<lb />328 yards of offense before<lb />intermission. Most of the<lb />yardage came from senior<lb />running back Cedric Peer-<lb />man, who had touchdown<lb />runs of 79 and 60 yards to<lb />give Virginia a command-<lb />ing 14-6 lead.<lb /><lb />They have a good run-<lb />ning back. He took advan-<lb />tage of his blocking and<lb />hit his edge and went<lb />it was hard going against<lb />him,? said ECU senior<lb />defensive lineman Khalif<lb />Mitchell of Peerman, who<lb />finished with 173 rushing<lb />yards and two touchdowns<lb />against ECU.<lb /><lb />Peerman wasn<lb />t the<lb />only one to shine in the<lb />first half. Mikell Mitchell<lb />~ also scored in the opening<lb />half with a 5-yard touch-<lb />down run, while a Marc<lb />Verica 30-yard pass to<lb />Kevin Ogletree concluded<lb />the.21 point second quarter<lb />for UVA. The Cavs took<lb /><lb />a daunting 28-6 lead into<lb /><lb />halftime.<lb /><lb />We felt like if we could<lb />get it down to a one-score<lb />game through the third<lb />_ quarter that we would be in<lb />good shape,? Holtz said.<lb />"The Pirates were able<lb />to do just that while look-<lb />ing like a glimpse of the<lb />team that started the season<lb />3-0.<lb /><lb />READ,<lb />RANT.<lb />SHARE.<lb /><lb />THE EAST<lb />FOV NO) HINDI<lb /><lb />A Dwayne ,Harris 59-<lb />yard kickoff return to open<lb />the second half, paved the<lb />way for a Jonathan Williams<lb />1-yard touchdown run. Two<lb />possessions later it was<lb />Harris again who sparked<lb />the Pirates, with a 52-yard<lb />reception from quarterback<lb />Patrick Pinkney to move<lb />the chains downfield. Eight<lb />plays later, ECU found the<lb />end zone again behind a<lb />10-yard pass from Pinkney<lb /><lb />-to running back Brandon<lb /><lb />Simmons to cut the deficit<lb />to 28-20.<lb /><lb />We just got in a rhythm<lb />and everyone had that<lb />motor to work harder,? said<lb />Pinkney, of the third quar-<lb />ter. We got in the mindset<lb />of ~we have a chance to win<lb />this game.<lb />?<lb /><lb />Pinkney was 12-of-28<lb />on the day for 196 yards<lb />and one touchdown. While<lb />he was a huge part of get-<lb />ting ECU back to within<lb />one score early in the<lb />fourth quarter, he also had<lb /><lb />a huge part in the Cavs<lb /><lb />final touchdown, which<lb />slammed the door shut on<lb />the Pirates.<lb /><lb />With just over nine<lb />minutes left in the game,<lb />Pinkney was sacked for a<lb />nine-yard loss and. in the<lb />process fumbled to give<lb />UVA the ball in prime field<lb />position at the ECU 24.<lb /><lb />TI thought it was a really<lb />positive [performance]<lb />besides the fumble,?<lb />Pinkney said. I<lb />m not<lb />throwing any interceptions;<lb />it<lb />s just. fumbles. Some-<lb />times you can<lb />t help it--<lb />you can<lb />t see the defender-<lb />-but it<lb />s all about keeping<lb />two hands on the ball and I<lb />just got to cut the fumbles<lb /><lb />down..:<lb /><lb />The ECU defense was<lb />able to contain the Cavs,<lb />but on the fourth down,<lb />a 12-yard fake field goal<lb />pass from quarterback/<lb />holder Scott Deke to tight<lb />end John Phillips put UVA<lb />up 35-20"which in the end<lb />was the winning margin.<lb /><lb />The Pirates had a solid<lb /><lb />second half other than two<lb />fumbles and giving up the -<lb /><lb />touchdown on the fake<lb />field goal. The defense,<lb />in particular, was stellar<lb />in the second half in only<lb />giving up seven points and<lb />102 total yards.<lb />Sophomore running back<lb />Williams was also another<lb />bright spot for ECU. In<lb />his first truly significant<lb />action of the season, Wil-<lb />liams rushed for 95 yards<lb /><lb />and one touchdown on 19°<lb /><lb />carries.<lb /><lb />I was pleased with<lb />the way John played and I<lb />think he brings something<lb />to the table;? Tate hurt his knee on a punt<lb />return in the first quarter, but fellow receiver Hakeem Nicks and<lb />quarterback Cam Sexton willed the Heels to yet another win.<lb />They will have to get used to playing without Tate, however,<lb />as the senior<lb />s career is now over with a torn MCL and ACL.<lb />UNC will get tested now, as the ACC<lb />s best player will be on<lb />the sidelines watching the rest of the season. That test starts<lb />this week with Virginia, a team we all know is hitting on all<lb />cylinders right now,<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN * SPORTS<lb /><lb />RONNIE WOODWARD<lb />THE East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />Record: 5-2<lb />Last week: Won at Kentucky, 24-17<lb /><lb />South Carolina is about as quiet as a 5-2 football team<lb />can be. After losing to Vanderbilt and Georgia in back-to-<lb />back weeks last month, USC has ripped off three straight<lb />wins"including two straight SEC wins on the road. Quar-<lb />terback Stephen Garcia led USC<lb />s comeback win at Kentucky<lb />despite not starting. The talented freshman replaced Chris<lb />Smelley in the third quarter and finished the game 10-of-14<lb />for 169 yards and one touchdown. Keeping that momentum<lb />will be tough this week when LSU comes to town, however. The<lb />Tigers, fresh off a beating from Florida, should be playing with<lb /><lb />- revenge on their minds"not good, Gamecock fans.<lb /><lb />THURSDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2008<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Record: 2-4<lb />Record: 4-1 Last week: bye week<lb />Last-week: Won vs. Clemson, 12-7<lb /><lb />3 Record: 3-2<lb /><lb />Last week: bye week<lb /><lb />N.C. State enters the rankings this week because, well,<lb />somebody has to be ranked. fifth. Clemson simply doesn<lb />t<lb />deserve any type of ranking after what happened with its<lb />program in the last week, and ECU needs to record a win<lb />before it creeps back in. The good news for the Wolfpack is<lb />that they play Florida State tonight, which is still N.C. State's<lb />Superbowl. You can expect an all-out effort from N.C. State<lb />tonight, because the roster is still littered with enough of<lb />Chuck Amato<lb />s players. The bad news for N.C. State is it might<lb />not matter, because Florida State is so much better than the<lb />Wolfpack this year that even a maximum effort by N.C. State<lb />will not guarantee a win.<lb /><lb />All the talk about the Clemson-Wake Forest debacle last<lb />Thursday has been about Tommy Bowden"and rightfully so.<lb />The Tigers<lb /> loss was so bad that Bowden stepped down as the<lb />head coach Monday afternoon and wide receivers coach Dabo<lb />Swinney will be the interim coach for the rest of the season.<lb />The Deacons<lb /> win over Clemson looks less credible now, as It<lb />is evident that the Clemson<lb />s players were not willing to fight<lb />for Bowden<lb />s job, which showed in their game against Wake.<lb />With that said, Wake did its job and won the game. It will have<lb />tocontinue to do that on the road now, as it plays at Maryland<lb />and at Miami the next two weeks.<lb /><lb />The top- -3 teams in this poll are pretty equal. There's a<lb />pretty big drop-off after that, however. The Blue Devils had a<lb />bye week last week, and they needed it. After getting stomped<lb />by Georgia Tech 27-0 in its first road game of the season, Duke<lb />will have to change its ways on the road if it wants a bowl berth<lb />this season. After hosting Miami Saturday, the Blue Devils play<lb />four of their final six games on the road. Given the schedule,<lb />Duke needs to beat Miami this week, because home games<lb />will be few and far between from here on out.<lb /><lb />College<lb />Students<lb /><lb />10% off<lb /><lb />costume w/ID.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />TRICKS ...SUST Location<lb />~MO PRILLS...JUST DEALS Same Low | es for $1<lb /><lb />P - WIGS - MASK Prices!!<lb /><lb />DRIES . <lb />14<lb /><lb />Last-second heroics lifts Pirates<lb /><lb />HART HOLLOMAN<lb /><lb />THe East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />The Lady Pirate soccer team<lb />defeated conference foes Tulsa<lb />and SMU last weekend, extend-<lb />ing their unbeaten run to six<lb />games. ECU (10-3-1, 5-0-1)<lb />beat Tulsa with a last second<lb />golden goal in double OT on<lb />Friday and then defeated SMU<lb /><lb />2-1 on Sunday. The Lady Pirates -<lb /><lb />extended their conference lead<lb />to four points over Colorado<lb />College.<lb /><lb />Against Tulsa, ECU domi-<lb />nated the game unleashing 20<lb />shots to only five for the Golden<lb />Hurricane. But, despite the Lady<lb />Pirates attacking verve, they<lb />failed to find the back of the net<lb />until, with four seconds remain-<lb />ing on the clock, senior forward<lb />Blair Heffner slotted home a<lb />Nicole Moore corner kick to give<lb />them a 1-0 victory.<lb /><lb />It was Heffner<lb />s fourth goal<lb />of the season, which ties her for<lb />the team lead with junior Alexis<lb />Foltz.<lb /><lb />ECU came close to scoring<lb />numerous occasions in regular<lb />time, putting a total of nine shots<lb />on goal. Heffner sent a shot just<lb />wide in the 10" minute and Foltz<lb /><lb />rattled the woodwork in the 70",<lb /><lb />_ but the Lady Pirates were unable<lb /><lb />to find the back of the net. And<lb />when it looked as though the<lb />game would end in a scoreless<lb />draw, Heffner beat the keeper<lb /><lb />for her conference leading third<lb /><lb />game-winning goal.<lb /><lb />When asked how it felt to<lb />tally the game winner, Heffner<lb />said, Amazing.?<lb /><lb />She was also pleased with<lb />the team<lb />s performance over the<lb />weekend.<lb /><lb />T think we played really<lb />well,? the senior said. We<lb />needed to step it up this weekend,<lb />like always, and I think we did<lb />that. And, I think the practices<lb />leading up to it helped a lot.?<lb /><lb />Sunday the Lady Pirates<lb />faced SMU, who were in second-<lb />to-last place in the conference.<lb />ECU took the lead in the 37"<lb />minute when Foltz put home a<lb />cross from.sophomore Tricia<lb />Tufts. The Lady Pirates doubled<lb />that lead in the 76" minute when<lb />freshman Amanda Malkiewicz<lb />was put in a one-on-one with the<lb />SMU goalkeeper by fellow fresh-<lb />man Leah Bagonis, and placed it<lb />in the left corner for the eventual<lb />game-winner.<lb /><lb />The Mustangs would pull one<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN « SPORTS<lb /><lb />back three minutes later, but then<lb /><lb />the Lady Pirates shut up shop and -<lb /><lb />held SMU without a shot for the<lb />remainder of the contest to hang<lb />on the for 2-1 victory.<lb /><lb />Head Coach Rob Donnen-<lb />wirth spoke about his team<lb />s play<lb />this weekend.<lb /><lb />The biggest thing'I think<lb /><lb />-we<lb />re doing well is the energy<lb /><lb />we play with on the field,? said<lb />Donnenwirth. We<lb />re play-<lb />ing as a group really well and<lb />making it difficult for other<lb />teams to get in a rhythm when<lb /><lb />they have the ball. And then<lb /><lb />we<lb />re doing well transitioning<lb />into our offense and eenne<lb />good chances.?<lb /><lb />Donnenwirth emphasized the<lb />word good? due to the team<lb />s<lb />habit of not wasting opportuni-<lb />ties or making bad decisions.<lb />ECU ranks last in the confer-<lb />ence in shots per game, but is<lb />second in the conference in shots<lb />on goal, which points to their<lb />solid build-up play and accurate<lb />shooting.<lb /><lb />I think it<lb />s the quality of<lb />shots that we<lb />re creating which<lb />has helped us out,? Donnenwirth<lb /><lb />THURSDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2008<lb /><lb />TRAVIS BARTLETT |<lb /><lb />~Senior Blair Heffner (26) scoring the golden goal against Tulsa last Friday.<lb /><lb />said. We are getting a lot of<lb />clear chances instead of taking<lb />bad shots on half-chances. In<lb />that respect I think we<lb />re doing<lb />very well.?<lb /><lb />However, Donnenwirth<lb /><lb />stressed that while the team is<lb /><lb />playing well, there is a lot of<lb />soccer still to be played.<lb />Obviously we<lb />re ~happy<lb />where we are this point. 5-0-1 is<lb />very good, but we have sixteen<lb />points in our league right now<lb />and there<lb />s still 15 points up for<lb />grabs,? he said. We<lb />re basically<lb />just half way done with confer-<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />ence play. We<lb />re happy where<lb />we are right now, but we have to<lb />stay focused and do the things we<lb />need to do.?<lb /><lb />The Lady Pirates have<lb />another important home week-<lb />end coming up. They will host<lb />Colorado College Friday at 4<lb />p.m. and then take on UTEP<lb />Sunday at noon. Colorado is<lb />second in C-USA with 12 points<lb />and UTEP isn<lb />t too far behind,<lb />with 10.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />BRINK continued from 10<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />TRAVIS BARTLETT |. THE EAST CAROLINIAN<lb />Pierre Bell after a fumble recovery against Houston.<lb />our hands, and get the ball out as much as we can,?<lb />said Simmons, a sophomore.<lb /><lb />Memphis quarterback Arkelon Hall is making it<lb />easier for his towering receivers. The junior ranks<lb />fourth in C-USA passing yards and has 10 touchdowns<lb />on the season.<lb /><lb />For ECU, the quarterback position continues to be<lb />an area of concern. Holtz announced on Monday that<lb />both Patrick Pinkney and Rob Kass will see action<lb />against Memphis.<lb /><lb />Right now it<lb />s very difficult to look Rob in the eye,<lb />as much as he has played, as much experience he has<lb />and the way he has played in his opportunities, and tell<lb />him that he doesn<lb />t deserve a shot,? Holtz said. I just<lb />don<lb />t know at this point what the rotation is going to<lb />be, but both quarterbacks will definitely play.?<lb /><lb />Running back is another position that has been<lb />highly competitive this season. Last week against the<lb />Cavaliers, sophomore Jonathan Williams took most of<lb />the carries in his first true outing as the feature back.<lb />Williams rushed for 96 yards and one touchdown on<lb />19 carries.<lb /><lb />Brandon Simmons and Norman Whitley combined<lb />for just three carries against UVA. ~"<lb /><lb />I<lb />m just coming out here and working hard every-<lb />day and trying to gain that level of respect and confi-<lb />dence from my team and the coaches,? Williams said<lb />of the battle at tailback. This isn<lb />t an individual thing<lb />right now. It<lb />s a team thing. We<lb />re just trying to pick<lb />it up right now.<lb /><lb />While the Memphis receivers attract most of the<lb />attention, the Tigers<lb /> impressive ground game gives<lb />coach Tommy West a balanced offense.<lb /><lb />Memphis is third in C-USA in rushing yards and<lb />junior running back Curtis Steele is third in the league<lb />in rushing, behind only to Tulane<lb />s Andre Anderson<lb />and Southern Miss<lb /> Damion Fletcher. )<lb /><lb />Strong safety Alton Starr and defensive tackle<lb />Clinton McDonald lead the way for the Tigers on the<lb />defensive side of the ball. Starr leads the team with 51<lb />total tackles while McDonald is the team leader with<lb />seven sacks for a team that has given up an sided 2 of<lb />363 yards of total offense per game:<lb /><lb />ECU will continue to attack defenses without the<lb />services of receiver Jamar Bryant, who has been sus-<lb />pended for the remainder of the season.<lb /><lb />Holtz is expecting fierce competition at receiver<lb />as well as the offensive line and secondary this week<lb />in practice.<lb /><lb />I certainly don<lb />t want to call what we<lb />re in a<lb />~slump<lb /> because I think we<lb />ve lost to three pretty good<lb />football teams and we<lb />ve been in the.games but just<lb />haven<lb />t been able to close the door,? said Holtz. I<lb />think we<lb />ve got to find people who are motivated to<lb />go out there and play ata high level.?<lb /><lb />If the Pirates are to rebound and give Holtz his first<lb />conference title, this weekend<lb />s game against Memphis<lb />is likely a must-win.<lb /><lb />We have to [win],? said senior defensive tackle<lb />Khalif Mitchell. It<lb />s part of our conference champion-<lb />ship mission and that<lb />s what we<lb />re playing for now.?<lb /><lb />~ MEF zon<lb /><lb />access to music c for your ¥ phone: and :<lb />: computer for one low monthly fee.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />~ Switch to America<lb />s Most | : Wireless Network:<lb /><lb />any store<lb /><lb />1.888.VZW.4BIZ (899.4249) . verizonwireless.com/getdiscount<lb /><lb />Open 7 days a week.
