WALLACE<lb />THE East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />Technology is an exponentially growing<lb />machine that feeds off new scientific feats and<lb />consumer demands. But how much bigger will<lb />airplanes, military ships and buildings grow in our<lb />lifetime? MoreT interestingly, how much will con-<lb />sumer electronics grow over the nextT few years?<lb />Televisions started as interactive pieces of furniture. An<lb />old cathode ray tube television from the 1950s looked<lb />like a small dresser with a glass screen. The 2008<lb />Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada<lb />highlighted PanasonicTs 150? plasma television.<lb /><lb />It was nicknamed the life wall? because the televi-<lb />sion couldeasily takeup an empty wall inany livingroom<lb />due to its massive screen and its depth of only one inch.<lb />The television that was in my parentTs house when<lb />I was. growing up was in a large, polished wooden<lb />frame with simple stripes carved into the sides to'give<lb />it some character. It swiveled on a heavy, wooden floor<lb />mount. It served as a piece of furniture as well because<lb />we decorated it like any other piece of furniture in<lb /><lb />~ the house "with ornaments that suited the season or<lb /><lb />upcoming holiday.<lb /><lb />Sadly enough, the bbe in the wooden box<lb />burned out a few years ago, and now my parents<lb />are in the process of buying a flat-panel television.<lb />Like early radios, televisions have become standard<lb />necessities for our homes. They provide us with<lb />news, entertainment and connections with the world<lb />around us.<lb /><lb />Television brings us together and sedates our<lb />minds for a few hours after a busy day. But what<lb />does it say about our culture if our demands have<lb />produced a wall-sized television? Is the futuristic<lb />technology of Fahrenheit 451] upon us today? Do<lb />we consume television, or is it consuming us?<lb />A big television and an extended cable package is<lb />just another status symbol, next to diamond rings<lb />and fancy cars.<lb /><lb />The images used in commercials for Cadil-<lb />lac and high definition televisions seem to be<lb />blending--theyTre used for marketing purposes.<lb /><lb />One of the big advertisements for leasing a room<lb /><lb />in The Bellamy apartments is that every living<lb />room is furnished with a 32? flat-panel television.<lb /><lb />When people camp, a source of running water is |<lb /><lb />usually the best place to set up the tent. Is television<lb />as much as a necessity as water? It seems so"without<lb />television, how would we know about Pur water filters<lb />and other such consumer goods that are intended to<lb />make life more enjoyable?<lb /><lb />ItTs getting ridiculous that televisions and other<lb />electronics are now scenes: being viewed as<lb />necessities in life.<lb /><lb />We should be chnnderinelitis on more important<lb /><lb />issues than how cool the new flat screen, LCD TV is.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeasicarolinian, com,<lb /><lb />Not all clitter<lb />and glam<lb /><lb />MARY DIXON . ?<lb /><lb />Tue East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />As children, many of us wished for the fame<lb /><lb />~ of celebrities. They are the royalty of our society.<lb /><lb />However, few of us actually understand the hard-<lb />ships that come with such a high social status.<lb />Celebrities are under constant surveillance. They<lb />are followed by both photographers and fans,<lb />bombarded with requests for autographs and<lb />pictures, and have problems even going out for a<lb /><lb />meal. Even worse, sometimes their lives are put.<lb />T into jeopardy. Obsessed fanatics have more than<lb /><lb />once been willing to commit crimes in the hopes<lb />of catching the attention of their favorite celebrity.<lb />Take, for example, Jodie FosterTs obsessed fan<lb />John Hinckley Jr."his attraction stemmed from<lb />FosterTs role in the movie Zaxi Driver. After many<lb />failed attempts to contact her, he formed a scheme<lb /><lb />» to kill the president, which mirrored the plot of<lb /><lb />the movie. In 1981; Hinckley attempted to assas-<lb />sinate the newly elected president Ronald Regan.<lb />Lindsay Lohan is another celebrity that has faced<lb />danger due to her fame. Recently, Lohan was<lb />attempting to leave a restaurant when a paparazzo<lb />crashed into her Mercedes-Benz to capture the<lb /><lb />photo. If Lohan wasnTt a celebrity, he wouldT<lb />have never attempted something so dangerous.<lb /><lb />An extreme example is the death of, Princess<lb />Diana. In 1997, traveling through Paris, her car<lb />was chased down by photographers trying to snap<lb />a picture of her with her new boyfriend Dodi Al<lb />Fayed. In the Pont. de LTalma road tunnel, her<lb />car was pushed into the support pillars and she<lb /><lb />was killed. Not only was this a loss \jof a won-<lb />derful woman, it was the loss of a world figure.<lb />It isnTt right that celebrities cannot leave their home<lb />or do something as simple as having dinner without<lb />worrying about being put in harms, way because of<lb />their fame.<lb /><lb />Celebrities are normal people with high profile.<lb />jobs. No one should suffer because of his or her -<lb /><lb />_Does.your girlfriend know that<lb /><lb />talent. Those who donTt live in the limelight donTt<lb /><lb />face the same stressors that a national figure does. ,<lb /><lb />Some argue that when people reach a certain level<lb />of fame, they have to accept the struggles that<lb /><lb />come with it. :<lb />One way to stop the madness? Saciely in<lb />genéral needs to stop idolizing these people on the -<lb /><lb />level that they do. Appreciating the talent and art<lb />of someone is only natural; however, stalking and<lb />other types of obsessive behavior are unacceptable:<lb /><lb />As part of our pop culture, we have grown<lb /><lb />used to following the lives of the famous. Flip-<lb />ping through a gossip magazine while waiting<lb />in the check out line is a common practice. If<lb />we notice something outrageous or scandalous<lb />printed on the cover about our favorite celeb-<lb /><lb />' rity, of course we will pick it up and read it. We<lb /><lb />are entertained by the rich: the more tragic the<lb />story, the more likely it will catch our interest.<lb />Celebrities are normal people, and itTs horrible that<lb /><lb />they face continuous worry because they excel at -<lb /><lb />their-art. After<lb /><lb />a long struggle against the legitimate government in<lb />Kabul, lieutenants of the Taliban leader Mullah Omar<lb />have entered into negotiations to end hostilities, and<lb />to notify the-world of the groupTs severing of ties with<lb />Osama bin LadenTs al Qaeda network.<lb /><lb />Earlier this week, the Saudi royal government,<lb />headed by King Abdullah, announced it was medi-<lb />ating talks between the Taliban leadership and the<lb />Afghani government to bring an end to fighting. -<lb />Details are sketchy and results are impossible to<lb />predict, but based on the willingness of each side to<lb />negotiate, this may be an example to follow in our<lb /><lb />wn global war on terror.?<lb /><lb />The Taliban is willing to abandon ties to al Qaeda<lb /><lb />and work with the Afghani government because<lb /><lb />their ability.to act has been severely curtailed, most<lb />notably through military action. Their leaders fear<lb /><lb />* for their lives, and prefer their influence in this world<lb /><lb />to glory in the next. This shows that they can be<lb />talked to. They can be brought back from extremist<lb />ideas. This doesnTt mean they will become our best<lb />friends or even agree with us on any major policy.<lb />But it may be an indication that their threat to us is<lb />being eliminated.<lb /><lb />The standing doctrine of the Bush Adslinistts-<lb />tion has been to use military force to deny haven<lb />to, and then destroy, suspected terrorist organiza-<lb /><lb />tions.T The difficulty in achieving the goals of this<lb /><lb />mission lie in defining the nature of terrorists, the<lb /><lb />extent to which we are truly committed to a global?<lb /><lb />eradication of terrorism and the relative inability of<lb />conventional,;massed military forces to seek out and<lb />eliminate all those who would resort to terrorism as<lb /><lb />_ ameans to-achieve a goal.<lb /><lb />Terrorism is a tactic of war, as well as an ideol-<lb />ogy held by groups who employ this tactic. One<lb />difficulty in eradicating it is that terrorists are not a<lb />group of people that we can simply kill or arrest to<lb />resolve the problem: Terrorism is a form of asym-<lb />metrical warfare, war fought without the rules that<lb />countries have traditionally agreed upon, if not<lb />always uniformly followed. It is the choice of out-<lb />numbered, outgunned combatants against a superior<lb />force. Many times these attacks focus on civilian,<lb />symbolic and strategic targets. Terrorism is used to<lb />diminish an opponentTs will to continue what can<lb />often be a long and endless fight.<lb /><lb />- Eliminating terrorism is particularly difficult<lb />when we as a nation assume that all terrorist organi-<lb />zations are formed around the same values and can -<lb /><lb />- be stopped by the same means. Groups like al Qaeda<lb /><lb />are composed of members that are either committed<lb />to die, or committed to live to carry on the fight.<lb />They have no room for negotiation, no material end<lb />that both sides could agree upon that would stop the<lb />fighting. But, this does not mean that all groups that<lb />are predisposed to terrorism cannot be ical with<lb />before they resort to terrorist acts. Nor does it mean<lb />they-must all be eradicated to produce peace.<lb /><lb />A good example is the Sunni Awakening move-<lb />ment in Iraq; groups of men who would likely oth-<lb />erwise have been radicalized by lack of opportunity<lb />and continued strife have found a way to employ<lb />their energies in rebuilding their country, rather than<lb />destroying it further. Before we commit ourselves<lb />as a country to a course of action that could possibly<lb />produce one new enemy for every one we kill, we<lb />should take the time to analyze the best course of<lb />action while considering each different group and<lb /><lb />their varying agendas.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Elise Phillips<lb />Editor in Chief<lb /><lb />Natalie Jurgen Andrea Robertson~<lb /><lb />News Editor Opinion Editor<lb />Ronnie Woodward Jared Jackson<lb /><lb />Sports Editor _ Asst. <lb />9<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ NEWS -<lb /><lb />The Black Keys take Raleigh<lb /><lb />STEPHEN MASON<lb />THE East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />Sunday, the Black Keys raided<lb />the Disco Rodeo in Raleigh, North<lb />Carolina, putting on an unbeliev-<lb />ably energetic show.<lb /><lb />The duo, comprised of gui-<lb />tarist and vocalist Dan Auerbach<lb />and drummer Patrick Carney,<lb />_ have made a name for themselves<lb />for their blues-driven rock riffs,<lb />and are now teuring for their new<lb /><lb />album Attack & Release which |<lb /><lb />was released earlier this year.<lb /><lb />The set list drew from their<lb />new album, which is a departure<lb />from their signature sound. The<lb />bandTs first four albums consisted<lb />' of nothing but guitars and drums,<lb />but Attack & Release proved to<lb />be far from the norm.<lb /><lb />Produced by Danger Mouse -<lb /><lb />(one half of Gnarls Barkley)<lb />the album had heavy hip-hop<lb />influences and contained ambi-<lb />ent synthesizers and keyboards,<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />among other instruments, The<lb /><lb />Black Keys performed songs<lb />like I Got Mine,? and Strange<lb />Times,? " the latter of which has<lb />a sound that relies heavily on<lb />Danger MouseTs added input.<lb />Strange Times? was played<lb />without it, but never lost anly of<lb />the energy.<lb /><lb />In fact, the entire night wasT<lb /><lb />like that.<lb />Their opening band, the Royal<lb />Bangs, were impressive. Influ-<lb />enced by acts like the White<lb />Stripes and Death Cab For Cutie,<lb />they have a fairly original sound.<lb /><lb />_A five-piece act hailing from Ten-<lb /><lb />nessee, the Royal Bangs were not<lb />the typical first act that fans want<lb />to get off the stage. Their set was<lb />explosive "three of the members<lb />constantly switching between<lb />instruments, such as guitar, bass,<lb />percussion and keyboards.<lb /><lb />The night came alive when<lb />Auerbach and .Carney took the<lb />stage, putting on a show so force-<lb />ful that Auerbach actually cut<lb />one of his fingers on his strings.<lb /><lb />Without hesitation he sealed it<lb />up with superglue and started the<lb />next song. Carney was equally<lb />impressive, powerfully keeping<lb />deep rhythms to the point where<lb />he looked like he was in pain. His<lb /><lb />best moment was when he tooka :<lb /><lb />tambourine and used that instead<lb />of one of his drumsticks.<lb /><lb />The band played songs from<lb />all over their catalogue, including<lb />their signature 10 A.M. Auto-<lb />matic? from Rubber Factory and<lb />a Captain Beefheart cover. The<lb />Disco Rodeo is a small venue,<lb />so the show was intimate, with<lb /><lb />Auerbach walking up to the edge<lb /><lb />of the stage and actively interact-<lb />ing with the audience.<lb /><lb />What makes.the Black Keys<lb />such:a great live act is that they<lb />have a unique brand of hard<lb />rock, and they know how to play<lb />it: loud: ~<lb /><lb />Really, really loud.<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />features@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Attack and Release is the newest release from the band.<lb /><lb />FRESH SUSHI<lb /><lb />MADE TO ORDER<lb /><lb />ALL YOU._CAN EAT SUSHI<lb />FOR LUNCH AND DINNER<lb /><lb />HOURS<lb /><lb />LUNCH:<lb />Mon-Fri 11-3<lb />SUN 12-3"<lb /><lb />DINNER:<lb />Sun-THurs 4:30-10 §<lb />Fri-Sat 4:30-11- |<lb /><lb />LOCATED NEXT TO STAPLES OFF ARLINGTON BLVD.<lb /><lb />Reservations<lb />available for .<lb />large parties<lb /><lb />Call for our<lb />specials<lb /><lb />* Not only sushi<lb />* We also serve<lb />HIBACHI!<lb /><lb />Fully stocked bar 7<lb />inside and drink<lb />specials |<lb /><lb />Career Connections is an online job database that helps students<lb />connect with. _campus ~departments and local businesses that:are seek-<lb />ing part- -time workers. But how<lb /><lb />. UVA lost the games is more telling<lb /><lb />than just the results themselves.<lb />The loss to a more athletic and<lb />overpowering USC team was no<lb />surprise, but a 45-10 loss to UConn<lb />followed by a 31-3 drubbing by<lb />Duke sent the Wahoo Nation into<lb /><lb />-. panic mode. .<lb />As Holtz implied, this, doesnTt<lb /><lb />appear to be the same team that<lb />ranked in the bottom 10. of the<lb /><lb />-. nation in total offense after its first<lb /><lb />four games"or that was outscored<lb /><lb />128-36 by its opponents.<lb /><lb />Instability at quarterback has<lb />been one reason for the CavaliersT<lb />continued inefficienoy offensively:<lb /><lb />T think you could give most of<lb />it to what they were going through<lb />at the quarterback situation and their<lb />turnovers more than anything else,?<lb />Holtz said of UVATs early struggles.<lb /><lb />Now that theyTre managing the<lb /><lb />game and doing a2 much better job,<lb />I think theyTre a very dangerous<lb /><lb />football team offensively, which can.<lb /><lb />obviously score a lot of points.?<lb />~ Quarterback Mare Verica is<lb /><lb />. beginning to come into his own after<lb /><lb />taking over for Peter Lalich after the<lb />second game of the season.<lb /><lb />_ Merica struggled against UConn<lb />and Duke, but put together an<lb />admirable performance against<lb />the favored Maryland team. The<lb /><lb />~sophomore went 25-for-34 for 226<lb /><lb />yards and threw for two touch-<lb />~downs with no interceptions against<lb />the Terrapins.<lb /><lb />Stopping Kevin Ogletree, argu-<lb />ably UVATs biggest offensive threat,<lb /><lb />will be oneT of the ECU: defenseTs<lb /><lb />toughest obstacles. The junior<lb />wide-out leads the Cavaliers with<lb />318 receiving yards and two touch-<lb />downs, making him the fourth-lead-<lb /><lb />_ ing receiver in the ACC. :<lb />Senior cornerback J erek Hewett .<lb /><lb />will be one of the members of<lb />the secondary who are aiming to<lb />rebound from a lackluster showing<lb />against Houston.<lb /><lb />Vm always out there looking<lb /><lb />for competition,? Hewett said of the<lb /><lb />UVA receivers. ItTs going to be a<lb />fun matchup. WeTre going to go out<lb />there and give it our all and hope-<lb />fully weTll come out with a win.?<lb /><lb />OgletreeTs two touchdowns.<lb /><lb />came in the CavaliersT last outing<lb />against the Terrapins, and marked<lb />UVATs first scores of the season<lb />through the air.<lb /><lb />ECUTs receiving corps isheaded<lb /><lb />¢<lb /><lb />in the opposite direction however,<lb />as Holtz. announced the indefinite<lb />suspension of junior Jamar Bryant<lb />Wednesday afternoon. Holtz did<lb />not address the specifics of the sus-<lb />pension but said in a release that,<lb /><lb />'. Bryant has been suspended indefi-<lb />nitely for a violation of team policy. |<lb /><lb />There.is an expectation of conduct<lb /><lb />_associated with being a member of<lb /><lb />the Pirate football program.?<lb />Bryant is currently ECUTs<lb /><lb />second-leading receiver, with 216.<lb /><lb />yards and three touchdowns on<lb />the season. -<lb /><lb />VericaTs acclimation to the<lb />starting quarterback role is one<lb />explanation for the CavaliersT<lb />turnaround, but his improvement<lb /><lb />canTt explain. the rushing surge<lb /><lb />against Maryland.<lb />Although UVA coach Al GrohTs<lb /><lb />~ teams are noted for utilizing two-.<lb /><lb />back sets and pounding the football,<lb />the Cavaliers rank 10" in the ACC<lb />in rushing and dead last in scoring<lb />at 13 points per game. But those<lb />numbers appear to be on the rise<lb />after a surprising effort against its<lb /><lb />- neighbors to the north.<lb /><lb />- UVA got the breakout game it<lb />had been hoping for from its leading<lb />rusher Cedric Peerman, who ran for<lb />$10 yards. PeermanTs counterpart,<lb />running back Mikel Simpson, also:<lb />rushed for 77 yards.<lb /><lb />7 think theyT re finding some-<lb />thing and youTre seeing a little bit<lb />of a changing of the guards right<lb />now at running back with Peerman.<lb />getting the number of carries that he<lb /><lb />is,? said Holtz. I think both running -<lb />backs are very productive, but Peer-<lb /><lb />man has really been impressive. If<lb /><lb />~they aré going to turn and spread us<lb /><lb />out, weTre going to have to play in<lb />space. But I think theyTll also play<lb />some two-back.? -<lb /><lb />While Groh seeks to establish -<lb /><lb />a running game on offense, his<lb />defense is centered on stopping it.<lb />The Cavaliers completely shut down<lb />the TerrapinsT offense, holding them<lb />to just 79 yards rushing.<lb /><lb />UVA senior and reigning ACC ©<lb /><lb />Defensive Lineman of the Week<lb />Clint Sintim played a major role<lb /><lb />in that feat with one sack, six solo "<lb /><lb />tackles and a pass breakup. Sintim,<lb />who ~lines up at linebacker as well<lb />as the defensive end on third-down<lb />plays, is tied with former Cavalier<lb />Chris Long with 22 career sacks.<lb />WeTve seen him on film,?<lb />said ECU offensive lineman Cory<lb />Dowless. That'kidTs a really good<lb /><lb />player. You just have to prepare for.<lb />him. Everybody has to:step up as a.<lb /><lb />unit and execute their job.?<lb /><lb />Holtz believes UVATs lineback-<lb />ers are the key to a defense that<lb />after last week is begining to look<lb />menacing.<lb /><lb />Holtz also poniited out that the<lb />CavaliersT size across the board<lb />could pose a problem for the Pirates.<lb />UVATs starting defensive ends are<lb /><lb />~ both 6+ -foot-7 and their offensive<lb />. line is massive.<lb /><lb />Center J ack Shields is the small-<lb /><lb />_ est player on the offensive front, at<lb /><lb />6-foot-5 and 289 pounds. His four<lb /><lb />line mates are all at least 6-foot-6<lb /><lb />and weigh in over 300 pounds. |<lb />For both ECU and UVA, the<lb /><lb />question is: which team will show<lb /><lb />up? Both sides have had a puzzling<lb /><lb />array of results. ItTs<lb />a lot more tiring and a lot more<lb />physical. After the game you<lb />feel a lot more drained. You just<lb />have to get used to getting in that<lb />many plays in a game.? .<lb /><lb />If his new role of start-<lb />ing strongside linebacker has<lb />affected Johnson in any way,<lb />not many people can tell. In<lb />his first career start against<lb />N.C. State, he had a team-high<lb />nine tackles, one of which<lb />was for a loss. Two weeks ago<lb />against Houston, he had his<lb />second straight stellar game<lb />with a career-high 11 tackles, as<lb />well as forcing and recovering<lb />a fumble.<lb /><lb />HeTs done great,?
