The descrip-<lb />tion? Allegedly, the attacker was a<lb />black male with glasses, roughly 5<lb />feet 6 inches tall.<lb /><lb />Harris was subsequently arrested<lb />on Thursday, Oct. 2 in front of<lb />Fletcher Hall on campus. He was<lb />released on an unsecured bond, with<lb />the understanding that he will show<lb />up to his Oct. 22 court date.<lb /><lb />The ECU police department was<lb />unavailable for comment.<lb /><lb />Harris claims that he was in<lb />his dorm room in White Hall at the<lb />time of the attack, which occurred at<lb /><lb />approximately 3 am. The victimTs<lb />name has not been released, but<lb />Harris claims that neither he nor the<lb />victim know each other.<lb /><lb />JT donTt know him [and] he<lb />doesnTt know me at all,?T said Harris,<lb />a rehab studies major. Clearly he<lb />wants to know who did it, but ITm<lb />not the guy.? .<lb /><lb />Harris, who is also the chief of<lb />staff for ECUTs Black Student Union,<lb />is outraged at the vague description<lb />that landed him in handcuffs.<lb /><lb />According to Kyndall Peele,<lb />vice president of BSU, the orga-<lb />nization has been campaigning to<lb />have the race? factor of the ECU<lb />alert system removed, although<lb />this incident involving Harris did<lb />not appear on the alert system at<lb /><lb />- the university.<lb /><lb />T feel that if theyTre going to<lb />include race, then they need to include<lb />otherraces besides the A frican-Amer-<lb />ican community,? said Peele. That could be any person<lb />at any time,? Harris said.<lb /><lb />Harris says a description other<lb />than race should be used to describe<lb />victims and/or suspects on the ECU<lb />alert system.<lb /><lb />When giving a description of<lb />someone, maybe give a descrip-<lb />tion of a tattoo or a scar, some-<lb />thing the average person wouldnTt<lb />have"a birthmark, mole, something,?<lb />Hanmis said.<lb /><lb />Hanris also said that he doesnTt feel<lb />that this is aracial case; rather, he would<lb />likethe system to clearly identify people<lb />in order to make a valid arrest.<lb /><lb />1 would like to make this very<lb /><lb />Clear that this is not a racial case, but<lb />a case of mistaken identity, and this<lb />could happen to anybody,? he said.<lb />Too often, there are these very vague<lb />descriptions [of people].?<lb /><lb />Peele agrees.<lb /><lb />This has nothing to do with<lb />race,? she said. I believe that it is an<lb />issue of equal opportunity. <lb />1OM)<lb /><lb />Opin<lb /><lb />ItTs time to<lb /><lb />putthetrolls:<lb /><lb />to bed<lb /><lb />Why Internet comments ki/I polite<lb />discourse<lb /><lb />LARA OLIVER<lb />-. THE East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />WeTve all been there. YouTre reading an article<lb />in a magazine or a newspaper and you think, Oh<lb />my God, this person is an idiot!?<lb /><lb />Just a few short years ago, the way many people<lb />would act on this realization would be to get up,<lb />grab a piece of paper, and send a letter to the editor<lb />of the publication entailing their thoughts. YouTd<lb />have your real name and address attached to your<lb />opinion and, if you were lucky, it would be printed<lb />in the newspaper/magazine so you could show all<lb /><lb />your friends how justified you were in your opinion "<lb /><lb />of that idiot writer.<lb />Well, not today. After seeing the popularity<lb />of commenting on sites like Blogger and Xanga,<lb /><lb />major publications felt it necessary to implement:<lb /><lb />their own commenting features on the web version<lb />of their print editions.<lb /><lb />From major newspapers like The New York<lb />Times to our own paper The East Carolinian,<lb />Internet comments have become almost as neces-<lb />sary as the articles.<lb /><lb />But are they really saying anything?<lb /><lb />The idea of Internet comments, and the philoso-<lb />phy that is espoused by people who support them,<lb />claims that they allow for an immediate discourse<lb />on the article connected to the article itself.<lb /><lb />Theoretically, an article about Governor Sarah<lb />Palin and the current Trooper Gate scandal would<lb />turn into a debate on the problems inherént in<lb /><lb />running for national office while in the midst of<lb /><lb />an investigation " and whether that should affect<lb />someoneTs bid for vice presidency.<lb /><lb />Instead, it turns into a flurry of four letter wane<lb />_ being slung either at the author of the article, fellow<lb /><lb />commenters or Mrs. Palin herself.<lb /><lb />This is obviously not the polite discourse that<lb />implementing Internet comments intended to<lb />encourage. By allowing for an immediate, gratify-<lb />ing response to the Oh my God, this person is an<lb />idiot? impulse, many readers no longer feel the<lb />need to bother with the slightly longer process of<lb />writing a letter to the editor in order to vent their<lb />frustration.<lb /><lb />Personally, I donTt see the point to keeping<lb />Internet comments on sites for newspapers and<lb />magazines. In the context of social sites like<lb />LiveJournal and Blogger, itTs usually someone<lb /><lb />their name to their opinion. With magazines and<lb />newspapers, itTs random readers without much<lb />attachment to the article.<lb /><lb />Allowing Internet comments on newspapers<lb />and magazine sites allows for nothing but angry<lb />and hateful comments, hidden behind the anonym- .<lb />ity of cyberspace.<lb /><lb />It also allows for what has been called sock<lb />puppeting,? where the author of the article creates<lb />alter egos in order to either support their ideas<lb />through the comments or attack those who donTt<lb />agree.<lb /><lb />If more publications went through the process<lb />of hiring moderators to trim hateful and unneces-<lb />sary comments from their articles, this probably<lb />wouldnTt be a problem. However, this would prob-<lb />ably be more trouble than itTs worth, considering<lb />how small the ratio of well thought-out comments<lb />to hate speech is.<lb /><lb />Many newspapers in California are already<lb />disabling their Internet comments features, and<lb />major sites like Gawker require a person register to<lb />comment on the site, and face deletion if their com-<lb />ments turn into personal attacks and hate speech<lb />rather than discussion of the article.<lb /><lb />Hopefully more sites maintained by newspapers<lb />and magazines will attempt the Gawker method of<lb />maintaining Internet comments.<lb /><lb />Until then, I think the best solution would be<lb />to just get rid of them all together.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />Opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Skateboarding<lb />your way to a<lb />better you<lb /><lb />LEWIS CARROLL |<lb />THE EAst CAROLINIAN |<lb /><lb />It is no secret that skateboarding has<lb />been under the scrutiny of mainstream soci-<lb />ety since its beginning. But that is simply<lb />because most people do not fully understand<lb />it. Skateboarding is more than just a pastime;<lb /><lb />it is a form of art and freedom of expression.<lb /><lb />I have been skateboarding since I was a<lb />little sixth grade squirt, and few things have<lb />brought me as much exhilaration and excite-<lb />ment. For some reason it is most peopleTs<lb />belief that skateboarders go out with the sole<lb />purpose of destroying property and causing<lb />mischief, but they couldnTt be more wrong.<lb />Many people today have become dependent<lb />on television, computers and video games<lb />to pass the time and entertain themselves<lb />with little to no physical activity. According<lb /><lb />~to the latest statistics on AmericaTs obesity<lb /><lb />epidemic by America Sports Data, Inc., 63<lb />percent of Americans are overweight with a<lb />body mass index in excess of 25. Skateboarding is<lb />an excellent.source of cardiovascular activ-<lb />ity "the type of activity that is suggested for<lb />everyone for a minimum of 20 minutes daily as<lb />part of a healthy lifestyle. Skateboarding also<lb />increases your balance, flexibility and reflexes.<lb />In addition to considering the benefits of<lb />skateboarding for your physical health, it is a<lb />mentally healthy activity as well. The adven-<lb />turous nature of skateboarding propels people<lb />into new environments that are exciting and<lb />different. You are able to see a city in a way<lb />that a normal passerby does not. Creative ele-<lb /><lb />ments of the landscape that would be fun to,,<lb />skate, which you would never have noticed *<lb /><lb />before, begin to come out of the woodwork.<lb /><lb />Undoubtedly, the best thing about skateboarding "<lb /><lb />is the independence of competing only against<lb /><lb />yourself and learning the tricks on your own. A<lb /><lb />great place to learn the basics is a skate park.<lb />Locally, the one I enjoy the most is the Backdoor<lb /><lb />Skate Shop, which has been in town for three<lb />years. It is located at 108 River Block Road.<lb />This park offers everything you need for a board,<lb />including wheels, bearings, trucks and decks.<lb />Areas of the park include a handrail, pyramid<lb /><lb />~and excellent transitions, as well as a four-foot<lb /><lb />tall mini ramp (half pipe) with a five-foot concrete<lb />coping extension. Skateboarding lessons start out<lb />at $10 an hour, with prices per session if you need<lb />some assistance. I can only begin to describe the<lb /><lb />_ benefits of skateboarding in this article. If you<lb /><lb />really want to understand, get out and skate!<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />WhereTs your<lb />butt going?<lb /><lb />LAUREN COLLINS<lb />THE East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />Not all students at ECU are smokers, but it<lb />would be great if the majority of smokers acknowl-<lb />edged that other people share the air with them.<lb />ECU implemented the 25-foot smoking policy in<lb />2007, yet smokers still linger right at the entrances<lb />of buildings. Aside from walking through the<lb />cancerous cloud of those who light up, people are<lb />forced to wade through the cigarette butts that accu-<lb />mulate around the doors of most campus buildings<lb />as they make their way inside.<lb /><lb />If people are clearly going to ignore the rule<lb />and flick their filtered ends throughout the campus,<lb />it would be nice to have a designated place to put<lb />them, as opposed to throwing them all over the<lb />campus grounds. There may be a handful of people<lb />who put their cigarettes out and then place them in<lb />a trashcan, but the rest of those Pirates who choose<lb />to smoke could care less where their butts go.<lb /><lb />I actually spent time kicking cigarette butts into<lb />a pile, as I smoked one myself, during a night class<lb />break. Because there was no place to put them,<lb />I dropped mine with the pile and shuffled them<lb />closer to the trashcan. I figured it would at least<lb />make the job of the next campus cleaner slightly<lb />easier. Had there been a pit of sand or the familiar<lb />tin can, I would have gladly placed the cigarette<lb />butts there. There may be a few remaining places<lb /><lb />. for butt dumping, but I am starting to believe the<lb /><lb />ground is just the best place for most.<lb /><lb />There are a few dorms with the small black<lb />boxes for cigarette butts. Ironically, they are located<lb />by the doors of these buildings, so they canTt be<lb />used efficiently. Apparently the sign suggesting the<lb />boxes are not for trash is not clear enough for the<lb />ignorant folks who think a piece or two will be OK.<lb />Of course, why should everyone follow the rules?<lb />ThereTs just a sign for fun.<lb />~ We. should definitely have more places for<lb />dumping our butts. After all, cigarette butts are said<lb />to take 18 months to 10 years to degrade.<lb /><lb />Currently, 19 states prohibit smoking in most<lb />public places, including restaurants and some bars.<lb />These states include Arizona, California, Colorado,<lb />Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, lowa,<lb />Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota,<lb />New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Rhode<lb />Island, Washington and Vermont. Other states are<lb />beginning to take similar action, but North Caro-<lb />lina is currently not listed for the change. Since<lb />tobacco is a key cash crop in the Tarheel state, it<lb />doesnTt surprise me that we havenTt jumped on the<lb />bandwagon yet.<lb /><lb />Aside from the obvious health risks to smokers<lb />who puff on their daily cancer sticks, secondhand<lb /><lb />« smokes just.as.dangerous. Secondhand smoke is<lb />- also cancer-causing with hundreds of toxic and car-<lb /><lb />einogenic chemicals. For nonsmokers, the health<lb /><lb />risks arenTt the only concerns regarding campus<lb />smokers. ItTs unpleasant walking through a stinky<lb />puff of smoke on your way to class or suffering an<lb />asthma attack because someone would rather blow<lb />their cancer-causing fun on someone else.<lb /><lb />It seems impossible to completely abolish the<lb />smoking on campus, but it would be convenient for<lb />nonsmokers to have the right to a breath of fresh air.<lb />As a smoker myself, I still try to be considerate of<lb />people around me, and I apologize to those I have<lb />disrespected if it bothers them.<lb /><lb />Unfortunately, due to the lack of ashtrays con-<lb />veniently located around campus, the presence of<lb />one butt compels me to join the one from my mouth<lb />with those on the ground.<lb /><lb />ITm willing to make an effort to keep the<lb />campus clean, but what about everyone else?<lb /><lb />- This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Elise Phillips<lb />* Editor in Chief<lb /><lb />Andrea Robertson<lb />Opinion Editor<lb /><lb />Natalie Jurgen<lb />News Editor<lb /><lb />Jared Jackson<lb />Asst. ItTs<lb />just one more way of con-<lb />trolling the social space<lb />around you.?<lb /><lb />Bruce MacKenzie, 44,<lb />argues that iPods allow that<lb />phenomenon to be taken<lb />to extremes. ;<lb /><lb />Riding the ferry to and from<lb />Hoboken every day, he notes,<lb />EverybodyTs in their own world,<lb />with those things in their ears<lb />blocking out the sound. Often<lb />I give a greeting and thereTs<lb />no reaction because they donTt<lb />even realize ITm sitting next<lb />to them.? .<lb /><lb />He prefers to use his own<lb />iPod to enhance already allo-<lb />cated alone time.?<lb /><lb />But while MacKenzie dis-<lb />likes the way MP3 players silo<lb />people rather than making them<lb />part of a collective,? he relies on<lb />the devices more and more in his<lb />work as senior vice president<lb />for entertainment marketing at<lb />Manning, Selvage &amp; Lee.<lb /><lb />WeTre finding itTs impos-<lb />sible to reach target markets<lb />anymore through traditional<lb />means,? he says.<lb /><lb />WeTre using alterna-<lb />tive media, whether iPods<lb />or cellphones, to deliver<lb />branded messages in ways that<lb />interest people.?<lb /><lb />He finds it ironic that one<lb />of his projects, the federal<lb />governmentTs VERB anti-<lb /><lb />~obesity campaign, encourages<lb /><lb />kids to turn off their iPods ©<lb />and computers for one hour a<lb />day of physical activity , but<lb />must use those very devices to<lb />deliver the message.<lb /><lb />ThatTs where (kids) spend<lb />their time,? The Trojans hung 52<lb />points on the Cavaliers.<lb /><lb />Only one goal has been given<lb /><lb />up by the ECU soccer team in -<lb /><lb />conference play all year. The<lb />Pirates are 3-0-1 in Confer-<lb />ence USA thus far, with a tie<lb />coming from their play at UCF<lb />on Sunday. ECU has outscored<lb />their C-USA opponents 6-1. in<lb />four games.<lb /><lb />ECU is 2-0 all time against<lb />Virginia in football. In 1975, the<lb />Pirates beat the Cavaliers 61-10<lb />in Charlottesville and in 2006<lb />won 31-21 in Greenville. ECU<lb />has averaged 46 points per game<lb />in the series while Virginia has<lb />only averaged 15.<lb /><lb />The ECU volleyball team has<lb />lost the last five games, four of<lb />which has come in five sets, Prior<lb />to the losing streak, the Pirates<lb />were 11-4 overall. They have<lb /><lb />. since fallen to 11-9 and currently<lb />rank 11th in Conference USA<lb />with only one win.<lb /><lb />Number of records set in the<lb />annual Purple-Gold intrasquad<lb />swimming meet. However,<lb />in February of 2007, after feeling<lb />numbness in his chest and arms,<lb />he was diagnosed with a blood<lb />clot in his heart. Two days later,<lb />he underwent surgery to relieve<lb />a condition called acute coro-<lb />nary thrombosis. The surgery<lb />was successful, but his athletic<lb />future was uncertain. He was<lb />forced to sit out the rest of the<lb /><lb />year, unable to run, lift weights<lb />or play any kind of football.<lb /><lb />It. was kind of difficult<lb />at first, just wanting to do the<lb />things you used to do and not<lb />being able to; [it] was tough,?<lb />said Campbell.<lb /><lb />He recovered from the sur-<lb />gery, and his heart was fully<lb />functional when doctors cleared<lb />him to participate this January.<lb /><lb />Ft took a lot of work [getting :<lb /><lb />back],?? Campbell said. It took<lb />a lot of time and patience trying<lb />not to get back too fast. That was<lb />the most difficult thing.?<lb /><lb />Now Campbell is back, and<lb />focused on helping the Pirates<lb />achieve victory. He began the<lb />season as a back up, but man-<lb />aged a lot of playing time in<lb />the rotational system used by<lb />the coaching staff. However, an<lb />injury to starting tackle Stanley<lb />Bryant forced Campbell into<lb />the starting role he enjoyed as<lb />a freshman two years ago. You<lb />wonTt hear Campbell complain-<lb /><lb />ing; to him, the transition is<lb />nothing more than stepping up<lb />and contributing what he can<lb />to the team.<lb /><lb />ITve been preparing<lb />myself each week as if I was a<lb />starter,? said Campbell. With<lb />the number of plays I play it<lb />wasnTt much of a big difference.<lb />But I just felt like I needed to<lb /><lb />step up and help this team out<lb /><lb />anyway 1 carn.?<lb />And while some people<lb />may have reservations about his<lb />continuing to play after his<lb />health issues, Campbell is cer-<lb />tainly not one of them. _<lb />T feel strong like I was<lb /><lb />~before, and I feel healthy,?<lb /><lb />he said.<lb /><lb />The coaching staff is also<lb />pleased with CampbellTs return<lb />because of the contributions he<lb />makes to the team both on and<lb />off the field.<lb /><lb />Before he had his medical<lb />issue he was really a very good<lb />player for us, and we missed<lb /><lb />that,? said Steve Shankweiler,<lb />ECUTs offensive line coach.<lb />Last week against Houston<lb />he began to play like he did<lb />two years ago. He played full<lb />speed. He played very, very<lb />good. Having a good player back<lb />obviously helps the team.? "<lb />CampbellTs situation has<lb />also helped the coaches motivate<lb />other players in the process.<lb />Having a guy comeback<lb />who has overcome what he has,<lb />all you have to do is look at<lb />number 74 and say, ~this is the<lb /><lb />example you need to follow,T and "<lb /><lb />heTs a great leader for us in that<lb />respect,? said Shankweiler.<lb />However, injuries have<lb /><lb />~forced some changes to the<lb /><lb />preferred system of rotating the<lb />offensive linemen, which was<lb />so effective in the PiratesT first<lb />three victories. ?<lb />(Campbell] is having to<lb /><lb />~play too much. I donTt like for<lb /><lb />anyone to play a whole game<lb />and he has pretty much played<lb /><lb />ECU SID<lb /><lb />two whole games in a row,?<lb /><lb />said Shankweiler.<lb /><lb />Help should be on the way<lb />for Campbell and the rest of the<lb />offensive line.<lb /><lb />If we can get through this<lb />week I think weTll get Stanley<lb />Bryant back and that should help<lb />out,? Shankweiler said. Since<lb /><lb />tackle is one of the least expe- .<lb /><lb />rienced and deep positions we<lb /><lb />have on offense, D.J. [Scott] and -<lb /><lb />Terence have pretty much had to<lb />play the whole game for us and I<lb />think itTs affected us.? .<lb />Getting healthy was one of<lb />the focal points for the Pirates<lb />during their off week, but they<lb />will still be short-handed when<lb /><lb />. they travel to Virginia this Sat-<lb /><lb />urday. Campbell is used to that<lb /><lb />kind of grind by now, and you "<lb />can bet he will be ready to go on<lb /><lb />game day.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />RONNIE WOODWARD<lb />THE EAst CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />DonTt expect to see many<lb />five wide receiver sets from<lb />Virginia this Saturday. The five<lb />players who are most impor-<lb />tant to the Cavaliers offensive<lb /><lb />are the five who make up the<lb /><lb />offensive line. :<lb /><lb />With a formation similar to<lb />coach Ed Henry and the Marshall<lb />High School team in the state<lb />championship game of Remem-<lb />ber the Titans, Houston out-<lb />finessed the Pirates two Saturdays<lb /><lb />_ ago with the shotgun formation<lb /><lb />and spread offense.<lb />UVA will probably take a dif-<lb /><lb />ferent approach this Saturday. The<lb /><lb />Cavaliers have been successful in<lb />years past"and this year"when<lb />they physically dominate the<lb />opposing team and win the battles<lb />in the trenches. With four of<lb />its five starters at least 6-foot-6<lb />and over 300 pounds, UVATs<lb />offensive line looks especially<lb />menacing, which ECU coach Skip<lb />Holtz pointed out at his Monday<lb />press conference.<lb /><lb />The most impressive. thing<lb /><lb />about the PiratesT season opening<lb /><lb />wins over Virginia Tech and West<lb />Virginia was the way they domi-<lb />nated physically. ECU hasnTt<lb />played well since then, and there<lb /><lb />are a ton of reasons why: there "<lb /><lb />have been key injuries, itTs been<lb />an emotional roller coaster and<lb />ECU hasnTt played with the same<lb />physical attitude as it did in the<lb />seasonTs first two games.<lb /><lb />To win in Charlottesville<lb />this weekend, ECU will have<lb />to regain that same swagger it<lb />played with over a month ago.<lb /><lb />When they get into that<lb />two-back offense, weTre going<lb />to have be stern up front,? said<lb />Holtz of UVA. ItTs going to be a<lb /><lb />very physical football game and a<lb />real challenge for our linebackers<lb />and defensive lineman, because<lb />of their size and athleticism with<lb />their offensive lineman. Defen-<lb /><lb />sively, they try and stop the run -<lb /><lb />and on offense they try and line<lb />up and run the ball. They have<lb />that type of mindset and they do<lb />a good job with it.?<lb /><lb />The Cavaliers definitely had<lb />that type of mindset in a 31-0<lb />domination of Maryland this<lb />past Saturday.<lb /><lb />~ UVAcame into the Maryland<lb /><lb />game struggling on offense,<lb />trying to find an identity, as it<lb />had only scored*20 total points<lb />against.Division-I competition.<lb /><lb />Against the Terrapins,<lb />however, UVA looked like the<lb />Cavaliers of old. They ran for<lb />201 yards and controlled the<lb />time of possession and line of<lb />scrimmage, while newly pro-<lb />moted quarterback Mark Verica<lb />managed the game and hit big<lb />plays when the opportunity<lb />was presented.<lb /><lb />Part of this ~offensive resur-<lb /><lb />gence is due to senior running<lb /><lb />back Cedric Peerman, who has<lb />been hampered most of the season<lb />with a knee injury. Peerman<lb />had 17 carries for 110 yards<lb /><lb />and a touchdown against Mary-.<lb /><lb />land, maybe giving the UVA<lb />offense the physical aspect it had<lb />been missing. "<lb /><lb />Ced [Peerman] is a hard-<lb /><lb />nosed guy. He runs as hard as<lb /><lb />anyone,? wide receiver Kevin<lb /><lb />Ogletree told the Charlottesville |<lb /><lb />Daily Progress. It was good to<lb />see. He gave us some confidence,<lb />we started doing some things<lb />well and we were moving the<lb />ball "running it well and passing<lb />it well.?<lb /><lb /> OPINION page 7<lb /><lb />Clint Sintim (51) and the Cavaliers got physical with Maryland on Saturday.<lb /><lb />Opinion: Pirates will have to get physical in Charlottesville<lb /><lb />ASSOCIATED PRESS<lb /><lb /></p>
