<p>LON)<lb /><lb />The forgotten<lb />witch trial<lb /><lb />JARED JACKSON<lb />THE EAst CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />More than 15 years have passed since eight<lb />year-olds Steve Branch, Christopher Byers and<lb />Michael Moore were found brutally murdered in<lb />~West Memphis, Arkansas in May of 1993.<lb /><lb />At the crime scene, a wooded creek area, the<lb />boys were found naked and hog-tied with their shoe<lb />laces. They had been severely beaten and Byers<lb />testicles were mutilated.<lb /><lb />In one of the most radical injustices of all-<lb />time, Damien Elchols, Jessie Misskelley and Jason<lb />Baldwin were convicted of the murders and labeled<lb />the West Memphis Three.? Elchols currently sits<lb />on death row while Baldwin received life without<lb />parole and Misskelley received life plus 40 years.<lb /><lb />Just last year, DNA collected from the crime ©<lb /><lb />scene that was tested was found not to match any<lb />of the West Memphis Three,? yet a hair from<lb />Terry Hobbs, the stepfather of Steve Branch, was<lb />found on the shoe laces that were used to bind the<lb />boys together.<lb /><lb />But that wasnt enough. On Sept. 10, a circuit<lb />court judge rejected claims that the DNA proved<lb />the West Memphis Three? were not guilty.<lb /><lb />Why it is entirely possible that the West Mem-<lb />phis Three? in fact did murder the three young boys,<lb />in a court of law the burden is to prove beyond a<lb />reasonable doubt? that someone is either guilty or<lb />not. In the subsequent trial for the murders and the<lb />appeals, this was never accomplished.<lb /><lb />The whole idea behind the injustice of this<lb />case is that Elchols, Misskelley and Baldwin were<lb />convicted due to a so-called Satanic Panic? that<lb />griped the small Bible-belt town of West Memphis.<lb />The three wore black and listened to heavy metal in<lb />a time where such behavior raised red flags in com-<lb />parison to modern acceptance of this behavior.<lb /><lb />Pink Floyd and Metallica lyrics, Stephen King<lb />novels and their interest in heavy metal were all<lb />presented as evidence in court as to why these three<lb />young men were guilty.<lb /><lb />In Echols case, his interest in the Wicca religion<lb />was also used to paint him as a monster.<lb /><lb />Misskelley was the sole reason why the three<lb />were arrested after being watched for a short period<lb />of time. He confessed to the murders and named<lb />Echols and Baldwin as accomplices. However,<lb />many of the details of the confession turned out<lb />to be false. Misskelley was interrogated by detec-<lb />tives for approximately three hours"without<lb />being recorded"while interrogators revealed key<lb />information of the case to him. Add in the fact that<lb />Misskelleys IQ score of 72, which almost qualifies<lb />him to be considered legally retarded.<lb /><lb />Less than 24 hours after the murders, workers<lb />in a Bojangles restaurant less than a mile from the<lb />crime scene reported to authorities that an A fri-<lb />can-American male covered with mud and blood<lb />entered the womens bathroom. Even though the<lb />man had left before the police got to the scene they<lb />did not enter the bathroom or collect evidence until<lb />the following day. What evidence that was collected<lb />was deemed to be lost in the trial.<lb /><lb />A hair identified as that of being of African-<lb />American descent was later removed from a sheet<lb />that was used to wrap up one of the victims.<lb /><lb />During the trial, John:Mark Byers, father of<lb />Christopher Byers came under speculation of his:<lb /><lb />involvement. During the trial, Byers admitted<lb />to giving HBO documentary cameraman Doug<lb />Cooper a hunting knife. On the knife a small amount<lb />of blood was discovered. Byers claimed to have<lb />never used the knife only to recant the statement<lb />and claim that he had used it to cut deer meat, only<lb />to change his mind later saying that he may have<lb />cut his thumb with the weapon.<lb /><lb />After the trial, an attorney representing the<lb />West Memphis Three? discovered what appeared<lb />to be bite marks on the victims. Byers teeth had<lb />~been removed, without a consistent reason for their<lb />removal, which pushed him out of the investiga-<lb />tion.<lb /><lb />An informant, Vicki Hutchenson, even admit-<lb />ted in 2003 that she fabricated her story, which<lb />incriminated the three. She claimed that police<lb />insisted that if she did not cooperate with them that<lb />they would take her child away. She also claimed<lb />that when she entered the police station they had<lb />photographs of the three hanging on the wall to use<lb />as dart targets.<lb /><lb />Since the convictions, a small grassroots move-<lb />ment started to earn the West Memphis Three? a<lb />new trial has expanded nationally and globally and<lb />even includes celebrities such as Will Ferrel and<lb />Jack Black as well as musicians Eddie Vedder and<lb />Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks.<lb /><lb />While just scratching the surface of this injus-<lb />tice, it certainly proves that a cloud hangs over the<lb />convictions of the West Memphis Three.?<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 30, 2008 3<lb /><lb />{ Your Procrastination Destination }<lb /><lb />ee HURRY!<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />a?<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate Rants. As a relatively<lb />new part of the presidential process, debates are<lb />one of the few times the American public gets to<lb /><lb />see the candidates unfiltered and without a net. ,<lb /><lb />With the first held in 1960 and then not again<lb />until 1976, the literature supporting the effects<lb />of debates is both extensive and yet still has few<lb />enough data points that the science surrounding<lb />the impact of debates is still improving. However,<lb />some points can be made.<lb /><lb />The key to a debate is to not lose horribly. By<lb />this, I mean either doing something that makes<lb />you look bad"like when Richard Nixon didnt<lb />shave before the first debate in 1960"or allow-<lb />ing your opponent to make you look really bad,<lb />as Gerald Ford did in his second debate with<lb />Jimmy Carter in 1976. -<lb /><lb />These examples have demonstrated"particu-<lb />larly to front-runner candidates"that the key to<lb />a presidential debate is not to screw up.<lb /><lb />- For our candidates Friday, Obama came in<lb /><lb />as the candidate looking to control the environ-<lb />ment. He did OK, if not spectacular. By most<lb /><lb />accounts, Obama was successful Friday by |<lb /><lb />confronting McCain when challenged; he stayed<lb />on domestic issues as much as possible but also<lb />showed good knowledge when speaking about<lb />foreign policy.<lb /><lb />On the flip side of the coin, debates are often<lb /><lb />an opportunity to either put your opponent out.<lb /><lb />of his misery with clear superiority or a chance<lb />to tighten or flip the lead in the race. The most<lb />classic example is John F. Kennedy in the first<lb />debate of 1960, when voters listening to the<lb />radio claimed Nixon won, whereas voters who<lb />saw the television broadcast thought Kennedy<lb />was the winner.<lb /><lb />Another prime example was Ronald Reagans<lb />sound debate win over incumbent Carter in<lb />the second 1980 debate. In the second debate,<lb />Carter saw Reagan take the offensive on foreign<lb />policy and domestic spending and the California<lb />governors whimsical style won over the viewers.<lb />While most critics agree that Carter did not nec-<lb />essarily perform badly, he was merely outclassed<lb /><lb />and gave away huge momentum to the challenger,<lb />who was already on the rise.<lb /><lb />On Friday, McCain needed to shake things up<lb />or force a misstep from Obama. The general mood<lb />around the punditry is that a major win was not in<lb /><lb />evidence. Many agree McCain did a better job of |<lb /><lb />crafting the agenda of the debate as well as high-<lb />lighting quite clearly his edge on foreign policy.<lb /><lb />The question is: was it enough? And the new<lb />question is: are there enough opportunities left<lb />for McCain to bring something new to voters that<lb />they have not seen yet?<lb /><lb />Last weeks polling showed a strong leaning<lb />towards Obama; the last six states to change<lb />their status in the Electoral College from strong,<lb />leaning or toss-up have all moved in the direction<lb />of the democratic nominee as the ack ace<lb />convention bounce has waned.<lb /><lb />With only two presidential debates left, we Il<lb />see if McCain can pull through to win over unde-<lb /><lb />cided voters and take the Oval Office in January. ©<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />The craze<lb />for all things<lb />ORANG<lb /><lb />LARA OLIVER<lb />THE East iam? te<lb /><lb />One of the biggest trends hitting stores right<lb />now is a growing demand for organic produce.<lb />Grown without pesticides, chemical fertilizers or<lb />additives, organic food offers a solution to many<lb />consumers who are concerned about what they and<lb />their families are eating.<lb /><lb />This popularity has led many companies to<lb />change their methods of growing and manufactur-<lb />ing their foods. Organic versions of popular foods<lb />such as breakfast cereals and breads, are popping<lb />up alongside their non-organic cousins in super<lb />markets across the country, even organic Oreos are<lb />on their way to the family cookie jar.<lb /><lb />But part of the allure for organic goods for many<lb />Americans is the idea that organic produce goes<lb />hand in hand with being environmentally conscious.<lb />While true in the case of actually growing the<lb />produce, the idea loses steam once its time for the<lb />produce to make it to your local grocery store.<lb /><lb />One popular part of the organic produce move-<lb />ment is Earthbound Farms. Earthbound Farms<lb />grows and distributes the most popular variety of<lb />organic produce found in grocery stores " bagged<lb />salads and individual vegetables. While delicious<lb />(and nutritious), the fact that Earthbound Farms is<lb />located in California while we are located in North<lb />Carolina reveals an important issue in organic pro-<lb />duce " how old is it and how did it get here?<lb /><lb />While growing organic allows farmers to control<lb />the release of harmful toxins into the soil"including<lb />not using human fertilizer for products because of<lb />the latent chemicals"it doesnt solve the issue of the<lb />fuel that must be used to transport the product and<lb />the issue of freshness for the consumer.<lb /><lb />I say, instead of relying on these mega organic<lb />farms to provide us with our produce, why dont<lb />we return to the old staple of relying on local<lb />farmers?<lb /><lb />Whole Foods once relied on these same large<lb />out put organic farms to sell produce, but has since<lb />switched to relying on local farmers for their veg-<lb />etables. So why cant we?<lb /><lb />The Pitt County Farmers Market is open on<lb />Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, usu-<lb />ally from 8 a.m. -1 p.m. and offers a variety of<lb />locally grown produce that is both more seasonal<lb /><lb />and fresher than what you can find at the super -<lb /><lb />markets, For those of us more adventurous with our<lb />food, theres pickyourown.org. At Pick YourOwn,<lb />you can find local farms that allow the public to<lb />pick and pay for their own produce on site.<lb /><lb />By focusing on eating only whats in season and<lb />what can be farmed locally, we cannot only ensure<lb />that were eating whats best for us when its best<lb />for us, but we are also helping to support our local<lb />economy. While many organic foods at the super<lb />market travel from as far away as South America,<lb />you can always be sure that what youre buying at<lb />the Farmers Market is grown close by. And if youre<lb />curious about what youre buying, you can just ask<lb />the farmer about it.<lb /><lb />Buying local and buying organic doesnt have<lb />to be mutually exclusive. Asking a farmer about<lb />the pesticides. and fertilizers they use can create<lb />a dialog between the consumer and local farmers<lb />that can one day lead to a more intense focus on<lb />organic growing.<lb /><lb />Of course, theres always growing your own<lb />produce, but thats another story.<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Elise Phillips<lb />Editor in Chief<lb /><lb />Andrea Robertson<lb /><lb />Natalie Jurgen<lb />News Editor Opinion Editor<lb />Ronnie Woodward Jared Jackson<lb /><lb />Sports Editor Asst. The<lb />Pirates (3-2, 1-1 C-USA) havent<lb />played well since beating West<lb />Virginia, and they will now have<lb /><lb />to learn how to win again.<lb /><lb />What happens in one game<lb />does not make a season, [but]<lb />how you react to it can,? We need to get some guys<lb />healthy and some guys mentally<lb />fresh again. I dont think you<lb />can sell short how emotional<lb />those first two games were on<lb />the football team.<lb /><lb />Holtz now has an enormous<lb />challenge in front of him. First<lb />of all, he has to make sure he<lb />doesnt lose his players emo-<lb />tionally, if that hasnt happened<lb />already. Then he has to get<lb />those players to forget about<lb /><lb />the wins over Virginia Tech |<lb /><lb />and West Virginia, and focus<lb />on what it will take to salvage<lb />this season.<lb /><lb />Last year, UTEP was faced |<lb /><lb />with a similar dilemma, some-<lb />thing that Holtz alluded to<lb />prior to the Houston game. The<lb />Miners started the 2007 season<lb /><lb />5-1 and were sky-high emo- |<lb /><lb />tionally after beating eventual<lb />C-USA West champion Tulsa.<lb />The next week, UTEP lost a<lb />very emotional game to ECU in<lb /><lb />overtime and the Miners never |<lb /><lb />recovered"losing their final<lb />six games of the season.<lb /><lb />Will the same thing happen<lb />to ECU?
