<lb />Opinion<lb /><lb />Playing to the tune<lb />of his own guitar<lb /><lb />MARY DIXON<lb />THE East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />True talent is hard to come by these days.<lb />With P. Diddy spitting out bands left and right and<lb />American Idol? rolling pop-rock stars out at fac-<lb />" tory speed, it is difficult to sort through the fluff<lb />and get to something that is worth more than just<lb />one single. Enter Claudio Sanchez.<lb /><lb />Claudio Sanchez is the lead singer and second<lb />lead guitar player for the alternative progressive<lb />band Coheed and Cambria. He is also the front<lb />~man of his personal side project, The Prize Fighter<lb />Inferno. 3<lb /><lb />Did I mention that he is writing a story that<lb /><lb />follows not only the music of Coheed and Cambria<lb /><lb />but the bands own comic book series titled, The<lb />Amory Wars?? Sure, it seems like he may have a<lb />lot on his artistic palate, but rest assured he does<lb />not disappoint in any of his endeavors.<lb /><lb />Coheed and Cambria are still relatively new<lb />on the scene as far as major popularity goes;<lb />however, they were recently honored on the pop<lb />culture phenomenon Rock Band with their Song<lb />Welcome Home.?<lb /><lb />Sanchez and band mate Travis Stever began the<lb />foundations for Coheed and Cambria back in 1995<lb />under the name Shabutie. Several band members<lb />came and went, but in 2002, along with Michael<lb />Todd and Josh Eppard (now replaced by Chris<lb /><lb />Pennie, former drummer of The Dillinger Escape "<lb /><lb />Plan), Coheed and Cambria released its first album<lb />Second Stage and the Turbine Blade. From there,<lb />they have released three more albums, all with a<lb />common theme intertwined in the music.<lb /><lb />Coheed and Cambria produce music that fol-<lb />lows the story of Claudio"not to be confused<lb />with the lead singer"a young man charged with<lb />the mission of saving mankind. Coheed and Cam-<lb />bria are also characters in the epic story"they<lb />play Claudios parents. Claudio, the character, is<lb />somewhat fortunes fool; his parents are forced to<lb />. kill his three siblings, and eventually they too are<lb />killed (all by the first album which is the second<lb />- part of the story) and still he is left as mankinds<lb />only hope not to be enslaved by their evil lords,<lb /><lb />known as the Mage. The story itself is extremely<lb /><lb />intricate but outstanding nonetheless.<lb /><lb />Claudio, the singer, is definitely a modern-day<lb />poet given the lyrics he drapes over already breath-<lb />taking music behind this band. While the lyrics<lb />explain the story in a decoding fashion of sorts,<lb />one thing is for sure: It takes a lot of substance to<lb />incorporate hard-hitting words that follow such a<lb />story.<lb /><lb />Sanchez stepped outside of the band when he<lb />was dreaming up The Prize Fighter Inferno. He<lb />released My Brothers Blood Machine. in 2006,<lb />which is a prequel to the Coheed and Cambria story,<lb />as told from the prospective of Jesse, Coheeds<lb />brother.<lb /><lb />Speaking of prequels, Sanchez has recently<lb />said that Coheed and Cambria will be coming out<lb />with their fifth album, currently untitled. It will be<lb />_ the first chapter of the story and will pull together<lb />and explain everything that is played out in the<lb />previous four.<lb /><lb />The album will likely be released in about a<lb />year. Bands come and go, but an epic story like this<lb /><lb />will last a lifetime. Do yourself a favor and treat -<lb /><lb />your ears to musical majesty.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian. com.<lb /><lb />The unsung<lb />benefits of gaming<lb /><lb />ANDREA ROBERTSON<lb />Tue East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />Video game play has transformed from a soli-<lb />tary, sedentary activity into an interactive activity<lb />that has created a dramatic increase in game play<lb />across all platforms. Because gaming systems have<lb />added more physical activity and socialization to<lb />their games, an activity that used to require players<lb />only to sit on a couch by themselves is now losing<lb />its bad reputation.<lb /><lb />The stereotype of the typical rie video gamer<lb />is being demolished as people everywhere are<lb />picking up the gaming hobby. A national survey<lb />conducted by Pew Internet and American. Life<lb />Project shows that 97 percent of all teens play some<lb />sort of video game.<lb /><lb />Many gameérs, however, are playing. video<lb />_ games in order to interact with other people, through<lb />online play and family play. The interactive aspects<lb />of the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and the Nintendo<lb />Wii each have developed an online network where<lb />gamers have the option to play with and against<lb />other gamers nationally and internationally.<lb /><lb />The surge in video game play has also created a<lb />place for video games in the classroom. James Paul<lb />Gee, a professor at Wisconsin-Madison Univer-<lb />sity, has conducted research that shows that video<lb />games can play an integral role in the classroom.<lb />Through simulations and role-play games, students<lb />are capable of better developing critical thinking<lb />skills. His research also shows that students dont<lb />just play video games. He found that if a student<lb />were playing a video game about mythology, the<lb />student is likely to go check out a book on mythol-<lb />ogy as well.<lb /><lb />Nintendo developed Wii Fit to be played on<lb />the Wii system, which requires players to get up<lb />and exercise. Through aerobic games, yoga games,<lb />strength training games and balance games, Wii Fit<lb />has been shown to help its players lose weight.<lb /><lb />We also see the ~usage of video games as a<lb />therapy tool; Because the Nintendo Wii remote<lb />requires the player to move it in multiple direc-<lb />tions, therapists are introducing gaming to wounded<lb />soldiers. coe<lb /><lb />Now that video gaming has become more inter-<lb />active and more physically demanding, it seems<lb />like everyone is becoming a gamer. Thankfully,<lb />this change in the way that video games are played<lb />is proving that video games arent as bad as they<lb />were once thought to be.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 25, 2008 4<lb /><lb />{ Your Procrastination Destination }<lb /><lb />www.harrybliss.com<lb /><lb />4<lb /><lb />N<lb />S<lb /><lb />©2008 Harry Bliss. I<lb />find it a sad testament to the history of the nation<lb />that we have to have this discussion. At the same<lb />time, I celebrate how far we have come that we are<lb />in a position to be having it at all. America has seen<lb />great cleavages in its history, with few having the<lb />lasting and painful legacy of racial prejudice. We<lb />live in a country with past, present and likely future<lb />racial divisions. So the question worth examining<lb />is: could this election see a Bradley effect?<lb /><lb />The Bradley effect is a term that describes the<lb />phenomenon of an African-American candidates<lb />showing a lead over a white candidate in polling<lb />leading up to election day, which then vanishes<lb />or decreases in the voting on the actual day of the<lb />elections.<lb /><lb />This was the case for Tom Bradley in Cali-<lb />fornias 1982 gubernatorial contest. Bradley saw<lb />a large lead ~in the polls days before the election,<lb />but that lead transformed into a half-point loss on<lb />Election Day.<lb /><lb />A similar fate nearly met Douglas Wilder<lb />in Virginias 1989 gubernatorial race, where a<lb />nine-point polling lead the day before the election<lb />became a win of less than half of one percent on<lb />Election Day.<lb /><lb />In both cases, research showed a tendency fora<lb />small percentage of white voters to give inaccurate<lb />responses to poll questions, as well as a dispropor-<lb />tionate break of late-deciding independents for the<lb />white candidate.<lb /><lb />More recent research has shown less of a<lb />racial effect than suggested by isolated cases<lb />such as Bradley and Wilders. A study from UC<lb />Davis examining actual voting returns in relevant<lb />campaigns for the House of Representatives found<lb />white voters were not less likely, or only slightly<lb />less likely, to vote for a racial minority.<lb /><lb />Another examination of the eight Senate races<lb />from 2002-2006 in which African-Americans ran<lb />against white candidates, found that Democratic<lb />African-American candidates faced a small decline<lb />in actual votes from pre-election predictions, while<lb />Republican African-American candidates actually<lb />did better than predicted.<lb /><lb />So, the final calculus for this presidential elec-<lb />tion is simple: we cannot say with any certainty<lb />what role, if any, race will play in the outcome.<lb />Place no stock in anyone who tells you it cat-<lb />egorically will or will not affect who wins and<lb />~who loses.<lb /><lb />There are simply too many confounding fac-<lb /><lb />tors influencing human behavior; the only way<lb /><lb />to know the answer is to know the true nature<lb />of peoples thoughts, even when they attempt to<lb />conceal them.<lb /><lb />My own sense is, yes, there are Boone who will<lb />vote for Obama because he is African-American,<lb />and others who will not vote for him for the same<lb />reason. I also believe we live in a fundamentally<lb />pragmatic, middle-of-the-road country that prefers<lb />to weigh what or who is actually going to do them<lb />some good.<lb /><lb />Whether that is McCain or Obama, most people<lb />have more important things on their minds than the<lb />melanin content of a candidates epidermis.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />READ,<lb /><lb />RANT,<lb /><lb />SHARE.<lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />Elise Phillips<lb />Editor in Chief<lb /><lb />Andrea Robertson<lb />Opinion Editor<lb /><lb />Natalie Jurgen<lb />News Editor<lb /><lb />Jared Jackson<lb />Asst. Research shows that<lb /><lb />students who volunteer have -<lb /><lb />higher grades, an easier time<lb />making friends and are better at<lb />balancing their schedules.?<lb />Gagne-Cloutier adds that not<lb />only does service help academi-<lb />cally, it can also help with future<lb />plans. Commitment to an orga-<lb />nization can help with resume<lb />building. By giving the volunteer<lb />an advantage in job and intern-<lb />ship positions, students are also<lb />able to network with agencies.<lb />In addition, students can pace<lb />themselves by determining how<lb />much time and effort they wish<lb />to lend to volunteering.<lb />Volunteering does not<lb />require a large amount of time,?<lb />said Pam Barclay, a volunteer<lb />coordinator at the center. Stu-<lb />dents should try to complete 50<lb />hours a year"once a week or<lb />once a month is a good start.?<lb /><lb />However, many staffmembers<lb />recognize the time constraints of<lb />students that wish to volunteer.<lb />For students who endure this<lb /><lb />challenge, the center offers peer<lb /><lb />coordinators who are there to help<lb />students balance their schedules<lb /><lb />_and find organizations that will<lb /><lb />accommodate them.<lb /><lb />Although there is no service<lb />requirement for graduation; the<lb />center encourages students of<lb />all-majors to donate their time.<lb />Throughout the years, talks of<lb />subsidized college tuition for<lb />required service have some stu-<lb />dents buzzing and others a bit<lb />skeptical, but Barclay says that<lb />she has seen educational insti-<lb />tutions both thrive and fail by<lb />requiring hours for graduation,<lb />but is unsure how the ECU stu-<lb />dent population would respond.<lb /><lb />We are all volunteers on our<lb />own and we trust the organization<lb />that we send each student to,?<lb />Barclay said. It was a tough one but at the same time you have to think about the<lb />task at hand and thats a conference game against Houston.?<lb /><lb />But last week wasnt just any loss.<lb /><lb />The Pirates never trailed in regulation against N.C. State, but eventually<lb />lost a 30-24 heartbreaker in overtime. ECU was looking to start 4-0 for the first<lb /><lb />time since 1999 but instead saw a five-game winning streak snap, dating back ©<lb /><lb />to last season. The Pirates fell eight spots in the AP Poll and had presumably<lb />a chance to be BCS buster shattered.<lb /><lb />A lot of doing it [overcoming the State loss] has to do with keeping the<lb />season in perspective,? said junior defensive back Van Eskridge. The only<lb />thing we lost last week was maybe a BCS championship and a chance to go<lb />undefeated. The rest of our goals are still intact for this season as far as a con-<lb />ference championship and a bowl championship. |<lb /><lb />That is what were focused on right now. We just have to come out and<lb />put the loss against N.C. State behind us and get it done.?<lb /><lb />For ECU, putting last weeks loss in the past could end up being easier<lb />said than done. However, if history is any indication, then the Pirates should<lb />be able to get back to their winning ways. Over the last two years, ECU has<lb />an 8-2 record the following week coming off a losing effort.<lb /><lb />It certainly doesnt hurt the Pirates chances in having the opportunity to<lb />rebound in front of a home crowd.<lb /><lb />Were excited to have the opportunity to come back home,? said ECU<lb />coach Skip Holtz. Weve played three of our first four on the, road, so were<lb />excited to come back here and play in front of our home crowd. Especially<lb />with the environment that we had the last time we were here, which was<lb />absolutely exciting.?<lb /><lb />~Instead of Big East powerhouse West Virginia, this week the Pirate Nation<lb /><lb />will be cheering on ECU against Houston, a program with rich tradition, but.<lb /><lb />not so good results so far this year.<lb />Houston is coming in here as a 1-3 football team,? Holtz said. But as I<lb /><lb />said last week, you can never look at records and say, ~These people are good -<lb /><lb />and these people are not very good. Houston-has lost to Oklahoma State, and<lb />has lost their last two games by three points each.?<lb /><lb />Last year, the Pirates traveled to Houston and came away with a 37-35<lb />victory after the Cougars kicker missed 37 and 38-yard field goals in the final<lb />three minutes.<lb /><lb />This year, the Cougars come to Greenville with the hopes of playing spoiler<lb />and putting a roadblock in the Pirates conference championship aspirations.<lb /><lb />The Cougars feature the second best passing offense in C-USA with almost<lb />400 yards through the air per game as well as the Second best scoring offense,<lb />averaging afound 36 points per game.<lb /><lb />They are very explosive,? Eskridge said. They have very talented, skilled<lb />guys and a quarterback that doesnt put the ball in trouble a lot. He makes a<lb />lot of great decisions. Its just a great offense that can put up a lot of points<lb />if given the chance. When T look at this football team, t think its scary what<lb />theyre doing offensively right now.?<lb /><lb />Houstons offensive attack is led by sophomore quarterback Case Keenum,<lb /><lb />who has already thrown for over 1,500 yards and 16 touchdowns, in only four .<lb /><lb />games this season. The two most dangerous receivers for the Cougars are senior<lb />Mark Hafner and freshman Patrick Edwards. Both are currently averaging over<lb />65 yards receiving per game to go along with multiple touchdown receptions.<lb /><lb />ECU currently ranks 36th in the nation in pass defense, allowing 176 yards<lb />per game through the air. The Pirates have, however, looked shaky in the sec-<lb />ondary the last two weeks against Tulane and N.C. State. The units biggest<lb />challenge all season might be this week against the Cougars whe primarily<lb />throw the ball.<lb /><lb />Its going to be a hell of a challenge,? Eskridge said. They come out with<lb />a lot of four and five wide receiver sets and have a real good quarterback. He<lb />has a quick release and does a great job of scanning the field. They have some<lb />guys that know how to get open and when they catch it they know how to make<lb />plays with the ball in their hands.?<lb /><lb />As for the Houston defense, that unit is currently ranked in the middle of<lb />C-USA when it comes to statistics. The Cougars rank eighth in the conference in<lb />scoring defense, allowing almost 30 points per game. In total defense, Houston<lb /><lb />ranks ninth, allowing an average of 438 yards per game. :<lb />Their strength is really their defensive front and their secondary,? Holtz<lb /><lb />said. They return three of their four starters on the front, led by Phillip Hunt,<lb />who has 20 sacks in his career. Hes very aggressive. Their two defensive ends<lb />are definitely the strength of their four inside. But its probably what they get<lb />the most work on in practice every day, going up against their offense. They<lb />can come off the edge, disrupt a lot of things coming off the edge and make a<lb />lot of things happen.?<lb /><lb />Even though the Houston defense might give ECU multiple chances to<lb />score, the Pirates best defense may be their offense. The Cougars can put up<lb />points on the board quickly, so it will be key for ECU to sustain long drives<lb />and run the ball effectively to give the Pirate defense a rest.<lb /><lb />Its very important,? said Eskridge. All three phases of the game go hand-<lb />in-hand"special teams, offense and defense. If the offense goes out there and<lb />can have some success running the ball then that will help to keep us off the<lb />field and keep us rested.?<lb /><lb />ECU must also be prepared to go from relatively low scoring contests to<lb />what could be high scoring ones in C-USA play.<lb /><lb />Its still a game of football,? Pinkney said. Youre going to have your<lb />high scoring games and your low scoring ones. You just have to worry about it<lb />one play at a time. We have to execute on both sides of the ball. The defense<lb />cannot give up big plays and we have to control the ball. If we have the mindset<lb />to just.score every time then we will be fine.?<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />AILEEN DEVLIN | THE EAST CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />East Carolina<lb />Starting Lineup<lb /><lb />Offense<lb /><lb />QB- Patrick Pinkney, Sr.<lb /><lb />RB- Brandon Simmons, Sr.<lb />| FB- Kevin Gidrey, Soph.<lb /><lb />WR- weve Harris, Soph.<lb /><lb />WR- Jamar Bryant, Jr.<lb /><lb />TE- Davon Drew, Sr.<lb /><lb />LT- Terence Campbell, Jr.<lb /><lb />LG- Cory Dowless, Soph.<lb /><lb />C- Sean Allen, Jr.<lb /><lb />RG- Doug Palmer, Jr.<lb /><lb />RT- D.J.
