        <p>lon<lb /><lb />Opin<lb />Mayors,<lb />community<lb /><lb />organizers<lb />are the same<lb /><lb />One just as important as the other<lb />LARA OLIVER |<lb /><lb />THE East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />Like many Americans these past two weeks,<lb /><lb />I<lb />ve spent much of my time either hearing, seeing -<lb />or watching Sarah Palin somewhere in the media. -<lb /><lb />Whether it was Tina Fey<lb />s dead-on impersonation<lb />on Saturday Night Live, Palin<lb />s various town hall?<lb />speeches or her interview with Charlie Gibson on<lb />ABC, it<lb />s pretty much Palinmania? in America<lb />recently.<lb /><lb />Much like a lot of America, I went who?? when<lb />Palin was chosen as McCain<lb />s vice presidential pick<lb />for the 2008 election; so it seems this current over-<lb />saturation of all things Palin was necessary for us<lb />to get to know the candidate better.<lb /><lb />Yet, in the midst of the current Little Miss<lb />Sunshine? pageant that seems to be the qualifica-<lb />tion for vice president, what have we really gotten<lb />to know about Mrs. Palin?<lb /><lb />I could go on for pages on how McCain<lb />s pick<lb /><lb />is a desperate attempt by an out-of-touch old man<lb /><lb />whose own ditch-bed-ridden-wife-for-young-<lb />pretty-millionaire? marriage doesn<lb />t represent the<lb />family values his party preaches.<lb /><lb />Or what about choosing Palin as a lazy maneu-<lb />ver to win over Clinton supporters who use the<lb />J want a woman in the White House no matter<lb />what she supports? logic. I mean, Palin represents<lb />the very.worst in bureaucracy and nepotism in<lb />politics.<lb /><lb />I think I got a pretty good idea of Sarah Palin<lb />s<lb />character when she spoke at the Republican<lb />National Convention. Regarding Obama<lb />s much-<lb />lauded community service-- I guess a small-town<lb />mayor is sort of like a ~community organizer,<lb /><lb />except that you have actual responsibilities.?<lb /><lb />Now, disregarding the fact that Palin has a<lb /><lb />grand total of only one extra year in office com-<lb />pared to Obama, during which I<lb />m sure she had<lb />many important meetings with the Russians next<lb />door, I really have to wonder why her speech-writ-<lb />ers and indeed Mrs. Palin herself, would allow<lb />themselves to be seen as such negative nancies?<lb />regarding community service.<lb /><lb />This current election has been driven a lot by<lb />the need for change in the White House, a certain<lb />H-word I won<lb />t write because even I<lb />m starting to<lb />get sick of it and the idea that the next person in<lb />office is going to have an atlas-sized responsibil-<lb />ity on their back to help clean up America, and put<lb />us back in good favor with the rest of the world.<lb />Seems to me that if I were a Republican, the party<lb />that has overwhelmingly been in favor of hands-<lb />off government and communities taking care of<lb />themselves with the help of ... community organiz-<lb />ers, I wouldn<lb />t insult a potentially large portion of<lb />supporters like that.<lb /><lb />Palin has been banking a lot on the hockey<lb />mom? demographic. From her lipstick? joke to<lb />touting her ever-growing family on stage, it looks<lb />like Palin really wants to let us know that she may<lb />be in the pockets of big oil, but gosh darn it, she<lb />s<lb />still just a mom (imagine that in pink cursive for<lb />the proper effect). _<lb /><lb />So, what is Palin<lb />s problem with community<lb />service? Many of the biggest non-profit organiza-<lb />tions in the country are run and populated by the<lb />same people Palin is trying to court for this years<lb />election. MADD; the PTA, the SPCA and Habitat<lb />for Humanity all spring to mind when I think about<lb />community service and at least one of those actually<lb />has the word mom? in it.<lb /><lb />Palin<lb />s commentary on community organizers<lb />reveals the negativity that has been feeding the<lb /><lb />Republican ticket this year and shows how instead<lb />of solutions, the McCain/Palin campaign offers<lb />biting sarcasm and insults that would be considered<lb />too low for even a high school treasurer election.<lb /><lb />It reminds me of a phrase that has circulated<lb />on the Internet following Palin<lb />s comments, Jesus<lb /><lb />was a community organizer, Pontius Pilate was a ~<lb /><lb />mayor.?<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Working hard<lb />for the money<lb /><lb />ERIN EDWARDS<lb />THE East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />It<lb />s a scenario that many college students are<lb />familiar with and usually despise, but one that<lb />sometimes cannot be avoided: paying the bills.<lb />Whether it<lb />s university tuition, rent, utilities or<lb /><lb />_ insurance, there is always a form of paper tab<lb />- demanding your payment.<lb /><lb />I have been working in the job market since I<lb />was 15. However, this isn<lb />t the only figure going<lb />up. College Board reported that for the 2006-2007<lb />academic year, tuition and fees at four-year public<lb />institutions increased by 6.3 percent. Even the Pell<lb />Grant, the largest and most beneficial<lb />source of aid<lb />for students has decreased since 2005.<lb /><lb />Of course, this doesn<lb />t include the increased<lb />cost of living, the inflated gas prices or other vari-<lb />ous factors that contribute to monthly bills.<lb /><lb />All of my friends have at least one job and from<lb />what T have observed, most of them come from<lb />middle-class families who have little to no financial<lb />problems. Many have taken jobs not only to help<lb />pay bills, but to learn a form of responsibility and<lb />accountability that only comes with having a job.<lb /><lb />I took on multiple jobs to help my parents out<lb />because my brother and sister decided it would<lb />be wise to get married within two weeks of each<lb />other, inevitably diminishing a large lump of my<lb />parents<lb /> finances.<lb /><lb />and attending college full-time. For one, financial<lb />responsibility can be learned and be helpful in the<lb />time after college"getting married, having kids<lb />and working full-time requires a lot of it"and<lb />accountability is useful and will prepare anyone<lb />for what to expect post-college life.<lb /><lb />But, there are downsides to taking on too much.<lb />Grades can suffer tremendously and for 55 percent<lb />of students working 35 or more hours per week,<lb />this has a negative impact. While low hours can<lb />prevent this harmful effect, low hours do not pay<lb />bills that so many college students are struggling<lb />to take responsibility for.<lb /><lb />The fact of the matter: as money becomes<lb />increasingly precious because of inflated prices,<lb />students will have to continue working even<lb />harder, thus making sacrifices for that monthly<lb />paycheck. _<lb /><lb />So what<lb />s more important? Financial respon-<lb />sibility and attempts at strong work ethic, or<lb />maintaining a strong GPA and overall impressive<lb />college record?<lb /><lb />This writer-can be contacted at<lb />features@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Youth of today:<lb />cast your vote<lb /><lb />ANDREA ROBERTSON<lb />THE EAst CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />Voters 18 to 29 years old hold an estimated 20<lb />percent of the eligible voting population.<lb /><lb />Nov. 4, 2008 is Election Day; a day that presi-<lb />dential candidates and fellow citizens hope that as<lb />many people as possible will cast their vote.<lb /><lb />The 2004 election saw the largest potential<lb />youth voter population in 20 years, according to<lb />former CIRCLE Director and current CIRCLE |<lb />Senior Adviser William Galston. One-fifth of the<lb />2004 eligible voting population.was composed of<lb />citizens ages 18 to 29, an approximate 41 million<lb />voters.<lb /><lb />It has been speculated that the voting-trend will<lb />continue to rise. Once you begin to vote, you are ©<lb />more likely to continue. Thus, voting is a habit-<lb />forming activity,? according to Donald Green,<lb />director of the Institution for Social and Policy<lb />Studies at Yale University.<lb /><lb />In April of this year, Karlo Barrios Marcelo,<lb />a research associate for CIRCLE, arranged a fact<lb />sheet about young voters in North Carolina, which<lb />presented that only 45 percent of eligible North<lb />Carolina citizens ages 18 to 29, showed up to the<lb />polls to vote in 2004.<lb /><lb />However, by combining Marcelo<lb />s informa-<lb />tion and the population results from the 2000 N.C.<lb />census, only about 634,000 of the 1.4 million eli-<lb />gible youth voters possibly voiced their opinion in<lb />the Bush/Kerry election.<lb /><lb />This is one of the most pivotal elections in U.S.<lb />history. We will have either our first Black president<lb />or our first female vice president. The results of this<lb />election will also determine the path our country<lb />takes economically and in foreign policy, two issues<lb />that greatly affect our citizens, especially with our<lb />disdain for rising gas prices.<lb /><lb />This election season also had another first; it<lb />was the first time a presidential candidate visited<lb />ECU.<lb /><lb />Both candidates know how important the youth<lb />vote can be if we make an effort to care enough<lb /><lb />~to vote.<lb /><lb />The decisions made by the new president<lb />will affect everyone. If you do not vote, you are<lb />allowing someone you did not attempt to elect, to<lb />govern you.<lb /><lb />You cannot legitimately complain about any<lb />aspect of how the country is run if you do not<lb />vote. If your argument is that your vote is pointless<lb />because the Electoral College is flawed and should<lb />be abolished, then vote for the candidate that you<lb />believe or know has a similar belief as you. It is<lb />possible that if that person were elected, he or she<lb />could work towards abolishing the Electoral Col-<lb />lege, while in office.<lb /><lb />It<lb />s worth trying to elect someone who could<lb />bring about changes that you agree with; trying is<lb />better than giving up.<lb /><lb />Everyone who is eligible to vote should cast<lb />his or her vote. If you do not like the republican<lb />candidate or the democratic candidate, then vote<lb />for someone on the third-party ticket. No vote is a<lb />wasted vote. You never know what might happen;<lb />it<lb />s possible that a third party could win the nomi-<lb />nation for president. In 1992, Ross Perot did better<lb />than many people probably thought he would.<lb /><lb />Vote on every possible level that you can: in<lb />clubs, in student government, in our city, in our<lb />state, in our nation. It is your civic duty to vote and<lb />voting is a great way to try to bring positive change<lb />to your country.<lb /><lb />Do not allow your voice to go unheard. <lb />eatures<lb /><lb />Annual Fast-a-Thon to<lb />occur next Monday<lb /><lb />ALISON KILLY<lb />Tue East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />Each year, for the entirety of:<lb /><lb />the ninth month, billions through-<lb />out the world celebrate Ramadan.<lb />Next Monday, it will be celebrated<lb /><lb />by students at the annual Fast-a-<lb /><lb />Thon (FAT) at ECU.<lb /><lb />Sponsored by the Muslim<lb />Student Association and the<lb />Student Activities Board, the<lb />banquet will feature Saeed Dar,<lb /><lb />who will speak about Ramadan<lb />and begin the event with a prayer.<lb />Food will be provided, but lim-<lb />ited to the first 150 participants.<lb /><lb />According to the Islamic<lb />faith, the observance of Ramadan<lb />is the celebration of the month<lb />when Allah was revealed through<lb />the first verses of the Qur<lb />an.<lb />Through fasting and abstaining<lb />from impure? activities during<lb />the daylight hours, Muslims seek<lb />to purify their bodies and minds.<lb /><lb />On the day of the FAT, each<lb />student will go about their day<lb />like normal, minus eating, drink-<lb /><lb />ing, smoking, sexual activities, ©<lb /><lb />talking about people, losing your<lb />temper, cursing ... basically,<lb />any mischief,? said Rania Issa,<lb />president of the ECU Muslim<lb />Student Association.<lb /><lb />From dawn until sunset,<lb />participants in Ramadan are not<lb />allowed to eat or drink. After<lb />sunset, Muslims participating<lb />in the FAT are given a meal<lb />called iftar? and another called<lb />suhoor,? before sunrise during<lb />the fast. It is also common for<lb />Muslims to pray for several hours<lb />each day during Ramadan. A<lb /><lb />{ Campus Scene }<lb /><lb />THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 18,2008 §<lb /><lb />MCT CAMPUS<lb /><lb />Millions of people throughout the world celebrate the month-long holiday.<lb /><lb />special prayer called Taraweeh?<lb />is said in addition to the regular<lb />prayers. FAT is not just for fol-<lb />lowers of Islam; all students are<lb />encouraged to join in. Everyone<lb />from any background is welcome<lb />to participate and to tell their<lb /><lb />friends to do so as well,? said<lb /><lb />Yazid Al-Fayyad, the cultural<lb />awareness chair of the Student<lb /><lb />- Activities Board.<lb />For those that deem them--<lb /><lb />selves religious, the celebration<lb /><lb />- can be used to reflect on blessings<lb /><lb />and clearing the mind and body of<lb />worldly? things. If you do not<lb /><lb />consider yourself to be a religious<lb />person, abstinence from certain<lb />activities can still be practiced in<lb />an effort to learn empathy:<lb /><lb />Daily, around the world,<lb />non-Muslims and others go<lb />without food,? Al-Fayyad said.<lb />We perceive food as something<lb />that is always available to us, and<lb />to have to go without it for more<lb />than 12 hours by our own doing<lb />is quite an experience.?<lb /><lb />Issa hopes that those who<lb />attend, religious or not, will learn<lb />more about the holiday, sacrifices<lb />and gains that are made during<lb /><lb />the entire month.<lb /><lb />T hope to lead a discussion,<lb />where the participants share their<lb />day, experience and feelings.on<lb />what they gained from the fast,?<lb />Issa said.<lb /><lb />The fasting and abstaining<lb />will begin on Sept. 22 starting at<lb /><lb />exactly 5:49 a.m. and ending at.<lb /><lb />7:06 p.m. The actual Fast-a-Thon<lb />event is free and will begin at 7<lb />p.m. in the Multi-purpose room of<lb />Mendenhall Student Center.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />features@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />ASHLEY ABERNATHY<lb />THe East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />Today, students from every<lb />residence hall will drop their<lb />books for a while to come out<lb />and show their ECU spirit at the<lb />annual King and Queen of the<lb />Halls event.<lb /><lb />Almost 21 years ave, the<lb />ECU Student Recreation Center<lb />and Campus Living decided<lb />to establish an event early in<lb />the semester to help students<lb />feel more connected to ECU,?<lb /><lb />according to Steve Myszak,<lb />assistant director for residence<lb />life.<lb /><lb />The purpose of the King and<lb /><lb />Queen event is to get students -<lb />out of the residence halls and<lb /><lb />involved on campus.<lb />ECU Student Recreation<lb /><lb />and Campus Living staff started.<lb /><lb />planning this year<lb />s event in late<lb />summer.<lb /><lb />Since King and Queen is a<lb /><lb />student affairs tradition, we do<lb />not want to change the format<lb />too much,? said Myszak. State. ECU didn<lb />t look great,<lb /><lb />making mental mistakes and lacking consistency on<lb /><lb />offense"but the bottom line is that it came away with a victory and remains unblemished<lb /><lb />in the loss column. A talented and hungry N.C. State is waiting this week in Raleigh, and<lb />the Pirates will have to play well to remain undefeated.<lb /><lb />1. ECU<lb /><lb />Record: 2-0<lb />Last Week: Bye Week<lb /><lb />Wake Forest might.actually be the best team in the<lb />Carolinas, but its wins don<lb />t even come close to the ones<lb />by ECU thus far. That can all change this week, however,<lb />as the Deacons play Florida State in Tallahassee. Florida<lb />State has looked good so far this season, but has yet to<lb />play a Division I-A team. This game could be a statement<lb />game for either team and it will definitely affect the ACC<lb />championship race.<lb /><lb />2. The Heels<lb /> dominating win at Rutgers<lb />last Thursday night proved a couple of things. One: UNC is<lb />for real this season and is poised for a breakout season. Two:<lb />UNC<lb />s season-opening 35-27 win over McNeese State meant<lb />one thing"it wasn<lb />t interested in playing that game and was<lb />already preparing for the Rutgers game, not the McNeese State<lb />team that was in front of it at the time. Just go<lb />1-0"except our mindset is 2-0<lb />because we have two games on<lb />the weekend. Wins are what get<lb />you to nationals.?<lb /><lb />Johnston is just one piece of<lb />the renovation ECU has under-<lb />gone during the off-season. This<lb />season will also mark the reign of<lb />anew coach, Mike Markham, as<lb />well as participation in a newly<lb />revamped Blue Ridge Hockey<lb />Conference (BRHC).<lb /><lb />Johnston is replacing former<lb />goaltender Brent Falcon, who<lb />helped build the program from<lb />scratch. Falcon, now residing in<lb />Raleigh, is still on board with the<lb />team serving as general manager.<lb /><lb />They are definitely some<lb />big shoes to fill,? Johnston<lb />said of Falcon. But I<lb />m doing<lb />my best at it. It<lb />s a whole dif-<lb />ferent role than I imagined<lb />coming into it, but I<lb />m taking<lb />it all in stride.?<lb /><lb />Falcon played a key role in<lb />bringing in Markham to guide the<lb />team through its fourth season.<lb /><lb />Markham, originally from<lb />Syracuse, N.Y, arrives with a<lb />wealth of knowledge about the<lb />game on ice. The grizzled veteran<lb />has more than 30 years of coach-<lb />ing and refereeing experience,<lb />with the most recent coming in<lb />the form of an assistant coach<lb />from the Syracuse Junior Stars<lb />of the Ontario Provincial Junior<lb />Hockey League.<lb /><lb />During his coaching stint in<lb />Syracuse, Markham offered his<lb />coaching wisdom to the likes<lb />of Edmonton Oilers center Rob<lb />Schremp. A number of other<lb />NHL players and upstate N.Y.<lb />natives often spent their summers<lb />sharing the ice with Markham<lb />s<lb />teams, including Tim Connolly<lb />(Buffalo Sabres), Craig Conroy<lb />(Calgary Flames) and Brian<lb />Gionta (New Jersey Devils).<lb /><lb />Markham, who has retired<lb />from coaching and living in New<lb />Bern, credits the spirit of ECU<lb />supporters as an incentive for<lb />joining the Pirate Nation.<lb /><lb />That<lb />s what really attracted<lb />me,? said Markham. When<lb />I did a little research on how<lb />high everybody here is on [ECU<lb /><lb />hockey], I think the biggest thing<lb />that I noticed is that the alumni<lb />base for ECU is all over. Every-<lb />where you go there are ECU fans.<lb />And not only are they there, but<lb />they<lb />re visible and very loud.?<lb /><lb />His coaching expertise should<lb />come in handy as the Pirates<lb />trade life as an independent for<lb />membership in the new BRHC.<lb />But this isn<lb />t the BRHC of old" -<lb />the conference has been stripped<lb />and refurbished to create a more<lb />competitive environment.<lb /><lb />The conference features a<lb />total of 19 teams, which are<lb />grouped into three divisions:<lb />Atlantic, Carolina and Coastal.<lb /><lb />The Atlantic Division has<lb />a distinct Virginia-flare, fea-<lb />turing George Mason, Lynch-<lb />burg, Northern Virginia, Rad-<lb />ford, VCU, VMI and William<lb />and Mary.<lb /><lb />The Carolina Division is<lb />home to Appalachian State, N.C.<lb />State, UNC Charlotte, UNCW,<lb />The Citadel and Georgia Tech.<lb /><lb />ECU will suit up in the<lb />Colonial Division, which was<lb />designed to be the premier divi-<lb />sion of the BRHC.<lb /><lb />The Pirates will be joined by<lb />Christopher Newport, George<lb />Washington, Loyola, Old Domin-<lb />ion, Richmond and Salisbury.<lb />CNU and Richmond each fin-<lb />ished in the top four of the ACHA<lb />South last season, while ODU<lb />skated their way into the national<lb /><lb /> HOCKEY page 13<lb /><lb />(ECU SID)<lb /><lb />ECU<lb />s Terence Campbell is<lb />this week<lb />s nominee for the 2008<lb />FedEx Orange Bowl/FWAA<lb />Courage Award, to be announced<lb />at the end of the season.<lb /><lb />Campbell, a junior offensive<lb />lineman from Maxton, N.C., has<lb />returned to action after undergo-<lb />ing emergency heart surgery in<lb />the winter of 2007.<lb /><lb />Campbell was a starter at<lb />tackle in 2006, when he recorded<lb />47 knockdown blocks, played<lb />880 snaps and made Conference<lb />USA<lb />s all-freshman team. But in<lb />February 2007, he was diagnosed<lb />with a blood clot in his heart after<lb />a scary episode when he began<lb />coughing and felt numbness in<lb />his arms and pain in his chest.<lb /><lb />Two days later, he was under-<lb />going surgery for a condition<lb />known as acute coronary throm-<lb />bosis. Surgery removed the clot,<lb />but Campbell<lb />s athletic future<lb />was in doubt. He wasn<lb />t allowed<lb />to run or lift weights - much less<lb />play football - in 2007.<lb /><lb />THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2008<lb /><lb />That was hard to take,?<lb />Campbell told the News &amp;<lb />Observer, that I would have to<lb />live without (football).?<lb /><lb />A scar remains on Campbell<lb />s<lb />heart wall, but the organ<lb />s func-<lb />tion has returned to normal.<lb /><lb />Last January, he received<lb />doctors<lb /> clearance to resume<lb />athletic participation, and chose<lb />to do so.<lb /><lb />When I first started (in spring<lb />practice), I worried,? Campbell<lb />told the News &amp; Observer. Any<lb />little thing would scare me. Now<lb />I don<lb />t think about it. It feels like<lb />it never happened.?<lb /><lb />Campbell has played a<lb />reserve role in ECU<lb />s first three<lb />games this season, helping the<lb />Pirates to a 3-0 start that includes<lb />wins over Virginia Tech and<lb /><lb />West Virginia.<lb /><lb />But because of injuries,<lb />Campbell is expected to start at<lb />left tackle this week.<lb /><lb />For the third straight year, the<lb />Football Writers Association of<lb />America and the FedEx Orange<lb />Bowl will announce a weekly<lb /><lb />nominee each Wednesday during<lb />the season. A blue-ribbon panel<lb />will determine the winner from<lb />all of the nominees.<lb /><lb />The winner of the FedEx<lb />Orange Bowl/FWAA Courage<lb />Award will be announced in<lb />December and be presented with<lb />the trophy.<lb /><lb />The Courage Award was<lb />created by ESPN The Mag-<lb />azine<lb />s senior writer Gene<lb />Wojciechowski, also a FWAA<lb />member. Johnston said.<lb /><lb />In addition to a full slate of<lb />conference action, ECU<lb />s home<lb />schedule is highlighted by visits<lb />from (ACHA) Div. II regional<lb />rivals Duke and Virginia Tech in<lb />November.<lb /><lb />In total, Markham<lb />s roster<lb />will feature three seniors, five<lb />juniors, five sophomores and<lb />12 freshmen. .<lb /><lb />Returning winger Sean Burns<lb />and center Chris Cesario pro-<lb />vided a bulk of the scoring<lb />in 2007-2008, but Markham<lb />is anticipating a more diverse<lb />attack this time around.<lb /><lb />T expect it to be totally spread<lb />around this year,? the ECU coach<lb />said. I think we are going to<lb />surprise a lot of teams by going<lb />out and wearing them down with<lb />the ability to play four lines. Most<lb />teams can<lb />t do that.?<lb /><lb />Defensively, ECU must<lb />replace seniors Mark Linzer,<lb /><lb />Jon Huck and Jon Koritz. Senior<lb /><lb />Donovan Dean and sophomore<lb />Ryan Konchalski will lead a<lb />group of inexperienced defen-<lb />semen, a number of which are<lb />converted forwards.<lb /><lb />Freshman defenseman Dan.<lb /><lb />Owens has been impressive in<lb />the preseason and could see<lb />significant ice time. The Raleigh<lb />native may be: new to the pro-<lb />gram, but he says he knows what<lb />is at stake.<lb /><lb />The biggest goal is nationals<lb />by far,? said Owens. Everyone<lb />is working hard to get there.<lb />We<lb />re playing in a new league<lb />this year, so we<lb />re definitely<lb />trying to leave a mark there.?<lb /><lb />With a young defense in<lb />front of him, sophomore goal-<lb />tender Matt Dalgetty has been<lb />impressed by the new regime in<lb />place for ECU ice hockey.<lb /><lb />He definitely knows<lb />his stuff,? said Dalgetty of<lb />Markham. He completely<lb />changed the preseason. He<lb />s<lb />worked with the guys"not<lb />about individual skills"but the<lb />overall team play. He<lb />s really<lb />brought the team together.?<lb /><lb />It<lb />s that kind of cohesiveness<lb />that will be necessary for the<lb />Pirates to reach their first ever<lb />national tournament. "<lb /><lb />The road to Rochester, M.N.<lb />begins this Friday at 9:30 p.m.<lb />inside Bladez on Ice, as the team<lb />plays its annual Purple-Gold<lb />intra-squad scrimmage.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />AWARD Cantintied from 12<lb /><lb />football team (2005), Memphis<lb /><lb />Haracio Colen (2004), San<lb />Jose State<lb />s Neil Parry<lb />(2003) and Toledo<lb />s William<lb />Bratton (2002). .<lb />Celebrating its 75th anni-<lb />versary, the Orange Bowl Com-<lb />mittee is a not-for-profit, 333-<lb />member, primarily-volunteer<lb />organization.
