<lb />Opinion<lb /><lb />Re-examining alcohol age -<lb />restrictions<lb /><lb />ANDREA ROBERTSON<lb />Tur East CaROLINIAN<lb /><lb />Since mid-August, college presidents from<lb />prestigious universities have banded together to<lb />fight the legal drinking age.<lb /><lb />The movement, named the Amethyst Initia-<lb />tive, started over a year ago in order to initiate a<lb />nationwide debate to change the legal drinking<lb /><lb />- age from 21 to 18.<lb /><lb />Founded by the former president of Middle-<lb />bury College, John McCardell, The Amethyst<lb />Initiative argues that the drinking age is con-<lb />stantly evaded and that changing the drinking<lb /><lb />age to 18 could prevent unnecessary deaths of<lb /><lb />young adults.<lb /><lb />A recent study conducted by the U.S. Sur-<lb />geon General showed that nearly 5,000 people<lb />younger than 21 die from underage drinking.<lb />It has also been reported by the Centers for<lb />Disease Control and Prevention that more than<lb />380 deaths occur from alcohol hee? among<lb />college-age people.<lb /><lb />McCardell is also the founder of the group,<lb />Choose Responsibility that proposed a legal<lb />requirement for people between 18 and 20 to take<lb />a drinking education class, similar to a drivers<lb />education class, in order to obtain a drinking<lb /><lb />license.?<lb /><lb />In an effort to prevent underage drinking if<lb /><lb />a teenager were to violate drinking laws before<lb />taking the class, they would not be eligible to<lb />take the class when they reached 18.<lb /><lb />Alcohol is a legal substance in the United<lb />States and by not allowing legal adults to con-<lb />sume it turns alcohol into a forbidden fruit. Low-<lb />ering the drinking age to 18 could take away the<lb />glamour of getting dangerously drunk.<lb /><lb />For many college students, going downtown<lb />is a weekly routine. People who are under the<lb /><lb />age of 21 tend to consume the same amount of<lb /><lb />alcohol in a few hours as they would an entire<lb />night, in an attempt to remain inebriated because<lb />they are unable to purchase alcohol.<lb /><lb />Issues of morals and ethics are also a con-<lb /><lb />cern. Students who hope to become teachers |<lb /><lb />lose everything if they are caught drinking<lb />underage.<lb /><lb />People between the ages of 18 and 20 are held<lb />accountable for their actions and are expected<lb />to be responsible citizens; however, they are<lb />not granted the same rights as those who are 21.<lb />Many deaths would be prevented if the drinking<lb />age were lowered. It is obvious that the current<lb />drinking age laws are not working. If an 18-year-<lb />old is responsible enough to risk his or her life by<lb /><lb />joining the military, they are responsible enough »<lb /><lb />to decide to drink an alcoholic beverage.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Quick thoughts<lb />Ona Gisry<lb /><lb />ending<lb /><lb />JON DOUGHERTY<lb />THE East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />There can be no washing away, no.under-<lb />stating and no words to express the magnitude<lb />of the win against No. 8 West Virginia. I grew<lb />up in Greenville. When I was eight, I sat in row<lb />eight behind the uprights. Jeff Blake aired out<lb />five touchdowns against the Wolfpack to win<lb />what was the biggest game in ECU history. The<lb />fans rushed the field in ecstasy and dad refused<lb />tq let me join them.<lb /><lb />I was as proud as I had ever been of my<lb />Pirate team and excited for. my Pirate nation<lb />when we destroyed the Mountaineers. ©<lb /><lb />But we now have to address what was<lb />clearly some mismanangement at the games<lb />close.<lb /><lb />I am waiting for the final reports of the<lb />investigations launched by ECU Police, the Pitt<lb />County Sheriffs Department, and Greenville<lb />and Lenoir county sheriff departments before I<lb />pass a final judgment on what transpired. Based<lb />on all available video footage and news reports,<lb />I have some thoughts on what happened and<lb />perhaps there will be more:<lb /><lb />1. ECU Police have stated in a press release<lb /><lb />~ they told officers working the game that if ECU<lb /><lb />won the game and fans attempted to come onto<lb /><lb />the field, officers should try to deter them by<lb />making themselves visible.? This suggests no<lb />orders were given to arrest or physically restrain<lb />those who attempted to rush.<lb /><lb />2. I want to commend and thank the officers<lb />at the stadium who did execute their orders and<lb />exhibited excellent personal restraint in a wild<lb />environment. The most visible example was<lb />the Highway Patrol trooper assigned escort to<lb />coach Holtz. This officer stood behind him as<lb /><lb />. a thousand fans arrived screaming and yelling.<lb />The trooper stood his ground, keeping his arms<lb />wide and his eyes and body moving. He wasnt<lb />lashing out or hollering at kids. He was a strong,<lb />solid force, just as many of the officers were<lb />throughout the event. Let us be sure to hail those<lb />who did their jobs and save our venom for those<lb />that deserve it.<lb /><lb />3. I would be the first person to stand up for<lb />the officers need and right to defend themselves<lb /><lb />~when facing a threat but I contend that an officer<lb />who punches a student in the head three times,<lb />after the student is-already on the ground and<lb />subdued, has lost control and can no longer be<lb />trusted with his duties. The officer should be<lb />dismissed if he cannot maintain composure<lb />in pressure situations and respect the rights of<lb />citizens in his custody. Some<lb /><lb />of my earliest memories are of tagging along as.<lb /><lb />he went from door to door. He registered people<lb />to vote.<lb /><lb />He did all this because he believed in the value<lb />of each persons voice in the political process. But it<lb />took me years to appreciate what he was teaching me<lb />during those walks around the neighborhood.<lb /><lb />Like so many people, I took my right to vote<lb />for granted.<lb /><lb />But now I feel differently. And I hope every<lb /><lb />young person in this country can learn from me.<lb />Because what my dad was trying to show me was<lb />that voting is not a dry responsibility. Participating<lb />in the political process is challenging, fascinating<lb />and fun.<lb /><lb />Many young Americans already know this.<lb />During the past 19 months, Ive traveled to every<lb />corner of the country with my husband on his thrilling<lb />campaign for the presidency. We have been dazzled<lb />by the young people weve met.<lb /><lb />So far, youth turnout in this campaign has been<lb />remarkable. More than six million young voters<lb />participated in primaries or caucuses this year.<lb />Thats an increase of more than 100 percent since<lb />2004. And at the Democratic National Convention<lb />in Denver, nearly 1 in 5 delegates were between the<lb />ages of 18 and 29.<lb /><lb />Ive seen this youthful energy and optimism<lb />before"when I met Barack 20 years ago.<lb /><lb />When we were first getting to know one another,<lb />Barack took me to a community meeting in a neigh-<lb />borhood in Chicago where people were working hard<lb /><lb />down and jobs dried up. There, Barack gave a talk<lb />about his experiences as a community organizer. He<lb />spoke about the gap between the world as it is and<lb />the world as it should be.<lb /><lb />I fell in love with that idea. When we vote, we<lb />dont just choose a candidate. We choose to begin<lb />building the world as it should be,<lb /><lb />When we vote this November, well be casting<lb />our ballots for that world.<lb /><lb />Ive heard people say, My vote doesnt matter,?<lb />My vote wont count,? or, Im just one person.<lb />What possible difference can I make?? But this year,<lb />all our votes matter more than ever.<lb /><lb />If you are satisfied with the world as it is, your<lb />choice this fall is easy. But if you believe, as I do,<lb />that we can change the world together, please join<lb />me in voting on Nov. 4.<lb /><lb />Voting is easy. So is registering to vote. It takes<lb />just'a minute, but it makes a huge difference. The<lb />Obama campaign has set up a Web site to help:<lb />voteforchange.com. There, you can register to vote<lb />in your state, arrange an absentee ballot, or find out<lb /><lb />if youre already registered. In some states, you<lb /><lb />can vote early. Our Web site will help you figure<lb />that out, too.<lb /><lb />This year, Ill be voting for my daughters future<lb />and my fathers memory. III vote for the thousands of<lb />regular folks who fought to get me the right to vote.<lb />And Ill vote for young people across America"and<lb />the generations of young people that will follow, who<lb />will someday look back at this time with gratitude<lb />that we.summoned the courage to begin building the<lb />world as it should be.<lb /><lb />Michelle Obama contributed this article to<lb />The East Carolinian.<lb /><lb />~Cat Potter<lb /><lb />The right to<lb />vote...or not<lb /><lb />CAT POTTER<lb />THE EAsT CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />At 22 years old, I have had the opportunity<lb />to vote in one major presidential election. This<lb />November I will have the opportunity to vote, yet<lb />again, for president of the United States. The differ-<lb />ence is that I will be four years older, a bit wiser (by<lb />my own standards), much more educated and this<lb />time, I might actually vote. Keyword: MIGHT. I<lb />havent yet decided.<lb /><lb />I can hear the gasps now. As a freshman at<lb />Appalachian State I was swept up in the middle of<lb />as I referred to them"the<lb />students that spent much of their day outside of<lb />my dorm or central campus trying to convince<lb />other students to vote in the 2004 election between<lb />George W. Bush and John Kerry.<lb /><lb />For days prior to the election I repeatedly heard<lb />phrases like exercise your right to vote!?<lb />for Kerry/Bush!? all over campus by very enthu-<lb />siastic students.<lb /><lb />Many of these avid campaigners were some<lb />of my best friends. When they learned that I was<lb />abstaining from the voting process, they were much<lb />less avid and slightly livid:<lb /><lb />All I heard for days after the election were "<lb /><lb />things like, You have no right to a political opinion<lb />because you didnt even vote,? or If Bush wins<lb />you have no right to complain about anything that<lb />happens.? Anything I said pertaining to the election<lb />or politics was completely negated because of my<lb />decision not to vote.<lb /><lb />My decision not to vote wasnt because I didnt<lb />care. My decision was made after limited research<lb />on both candidates. I didnt personally feel that<lb />either one would be much better than the other at<lb />running the country. I suppose one of my biggest<lb />problems is politicians in general. I simply dont<lb />trust them. I have never learned of one politician<lb />that I felt was completely honest and had the well<lb />being of the country at heart. Because of this, I felt<lb />that setting out to vote for a candidate that I did not<lb />fully support, or voting for a candidate solely to<lb />oppose the reinstatement of another, was not in my<lb />best interest, or in the best interest of the country.<lb /><lb />I believe that every vote counts, and for me to<lb />vote for a candidate that I didnt fully support would<lb />be dishonest and against my own personal belief of<lb />how the voting process should be carried out.<lb /><lb />In November of 2004, I was barely 19 and in<lb />many ways, still a child. The most knowledge<lb />Id accrued in politics was a year of civics in high<lb />school, minimal reading on my own, viewings<lb />of the conventions while playing drinking games<lb />(which many of my avid campaigner BFFs also<lb />participated in) and the opinions thrown out by my<lb />friends and family. In no way did I feel educated<lb />enough to make-such an important decision. And:<lb />yes, voting is much more than a task on my to-do<lb />list. It is something I want to be prepared for and<lb />educated on.<lb /><lb />I think it is ridiculous to be chastised for the<lb /><lb />~decision to abstain. Having the right to vote in<lb /><lb />a free country is something I am very grateful<lb />for. Surely, I understand that not all countries are<lb />so lucky, but one thing that is so great about this<lb />country is that we have the choice. Just as my avid<lb />campaigners chant, exercise the right to vote,? I<lb />have just that--the right to vote, not the obligation.<lb />Saying that I have no right to an opinion because I<lb />dont participate in the voting process is contradic-<lb />tory and unfair.<lb /><lb />This year, I have watched both conventions and<lb />have done much more research on both candidates<lb />and political parties. I feél educated in the ideas of<lb /><lb />both candidates and although my feelings remain<lb /><lb />the same on the true intentions of any politician,<lb />in this election I am prepared to exercise my right<lb />to vote...or not to vote. No matter what, I will be<lb />exercising my right to choose.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Elise Phillips<lb /><lb />Editor in Chief<lb />Lara Oliver<lb />Opinion Editor<lb /><lb />Natalie Jurgen<lb />News Editor<lb /><lb />Jared Jackson<lb />Asst. I dont think any<lb />school out of 119 Division I<lb />schools had a more impres-<lb />sive start to the season. For<lb />ECU to beat two nationally<lb /><lb />ranked teams from BCS con-<lb /><lb />ferences and one of those<lb />on the road just shouts out,<lb />~Hey, look at us. If Texas<lb />had beaten West Virginia and<lb />Virginia Tech, they would<lb />be beating their chests and<lb />saying, ~Why arent we No.<lb />1? I really dont understand<lb />how some voters penalize<lb />ECU in not ranking them<lb /><lb />higher just because they are .<lb /><lb />not a traditional powerhouse.<lb />To me, that runs contrary<lb />to what-our instructions are<lb />from New York every year...I<lb />think Skip Holtz is off to such<lb />a great start. | even consid-<lb />ered voting them.No. |... This<lb />is what were supposed to<lb />do. Were supposed to"not<lb />predict"but reward teams<lb />for results.<lb /><lb /> Q: If USC loses to Ohio<lb />State and ECU wins...<lb />A: If ECU blows out<lb />Tulane, who gave Alabama a<lb />tough time and USC were to<lb /><lb />lose, well have to consider<lb /><lb />ECU. If I did vote ECU No. 1,<lb /><lb /> I bet you Id probably be the<lb /><lb />only person in the country. I<lb />think everybody else would<lb />give it to Ohio State.<lb /><lb />- Q: What do you think<lb />ECUs national perception<lb />is? :<lb />A: ECU is getting more<lb />attention this week. Chris<lb />Johnson had such a great<lb />debut with the Tennessee<lb />Titans. I wish I had him on my<lb />fantasy team. The more play-<lb />ers you put in the NFL and<lb />the more big wins you put by<lb />your resume, I think people<lb />are going start giving ECU<lb />the attention it deserves.<lb /><lb />Q: Does ECU have a shot<lb />a BCS bowl?<lb /><lb />A: I think [ECU] has<lb />every reason to hope they can<lb />get to a BCS bowl. You look<lb />at the teams that have, teams<lb />like Hawaii, Utah and Boise<lb />State"I dont think any of<lb />them have the defense like<lb />the Pirates do. I think the<lb />danger ECU is going to find is<lb />keeping that intensity week-<lb />to-week, not getting ahead of<lb />itself, not thinking, ~Okay, we<lb />can be ina BCS bowl. I think<lb />thats the biggest concern<lb />Skip [Holtz] has. Now [ECU]<lb />has everybodys attention.<lb />ECU isnt going to sneak<lb />up on anybody.<lb /><lb />12<lb />Joe Giglio<lb /><lb />The News and Observer<lb />Raleigh, N.C.<lb /><lb />Q: Whats your criteria<lb />for voting?<lb /><lb />A: In general, I look to<lb />see who teams have beaten.<lb />Quality wins is what I mostly<lb />look for. In ECUs case, I<lb />actually saw them in person<lb />last week so that usually helps<lb />to determine how to gauge a<lb />team. I had them at No. 21 the<lb />week before, but I dont really<lb />know how good Virginia Tech<lb />is. We dont really know how<lb />good West Virginia is either.<lb />I thought the way [ECUs]<lb />defense played, the way that<lb />Patrick Pinkney played...there<lb />isnt a team behind them that<lb />I think they couldnt beat.<lb />I jumped them over BYU,<lb />Oregon, Penn State and South<lb />Florida. I jumped them over a<lb />bunch of teams because I think<lb />they were more impressive<lb />than those teams.?<lb /><lb />Q: Your thoughts on the<lb />three voters who voted ECU<lb />in the top-5?<lb /><lb />A: I think its a little early<lb />for that...Id have a hard time<lb />moving ECU above those<lb />other teams just based on beat-<lb />ing West Virginia and Virginia<lb />Tech. [West Virginia] would<lb />have to go on to win the Big<lb />East and Virginia Tech would<lb />have to go on to win the ACC<lb />before I could move them up<lb />that much more.<lb /><lb />Q: Whats the buzz in the<lb />Triangle, regarding ECU?<lb /><lb />A: I think theres a lot of<lb />college football fans around<lb />here that arent affiliated with<lb />N.C. State and UNC, or cer-<lb />tainly not Duke. I think there<lb />are casual fans who can see<lb />ECU as a team they can back<lb />and take interest in because "<lb />the [Triangle] teams in the <lb />ACC are making an entry on<lb />a national level.?<lb /><lb />Q: Can you see ECU<lb />playing in a BCS Bowl this<lb />season?<lb /><lb />A: I can. I really can. The<lb />dynamic is going to change<lb />for them because ECU has<lb />always wanted a piece of<lb />teams like N.C. State and<lb />Virginia... Now those teams<lb />are going to be gunning after<lb />ECU and they will see the<lb />same thing in C-USA...Its<lb />not going to be a cakewalk<lb />but its wide open for them.<lb />They certainly cleared the two<lb /><lb />_ toughest hurdles.?<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb /></p>
