Shelton said Monday that<lb /><lb />approximately 114 police offi-<lb />cers were present at the game,<lb />about 60 of whom were on the<lb />field.<lb /><lb />ECU Police were not the daly<lb />force on.the scene Saturday. Kin-<lb />ston and Greenville Police and<lb />both the Pitt and Lenoir County<lb />Sheriffs: Departments were also<lb />on site. :<lb /><lb />Shelton said that these five<lb />law enforcement agencies did<lb />expect an ECU victory and<lb />anticipated that some fans wauld<lb />try to run onto the field following<lb />the game.<lb /><lb />. We would have been spared the last<lb />eight years of democrats whining that George W.<lb /><lb />_ Bush stole the election, though he won the major-<lb /><lb />ity of electoral votes. Had the tables been turned,<lb />we wouldnt have heard a peep out of the whiners.<lb />They would have said the system did what it was<lb />intended to do.<lb /><lb />This summer] read the results of one poll that<lb />suggested Barack Obama could win the popular<lb />vote while John McCain could carry the Electoral<lb />College-- another nightmare-in-waiting. Lets face<lb />it, its time to do away with the Electoral College '<lb />and let the people directly elect the president and<lb />vice president.<lb /><lb />One argument in favor of the Electoral College<lb />is that it allows smaller states such as Delaware and<lb />Alaska, each with three electoral votes, to have<lb /><lb />- more of a voice in the electoral process. How can<lb /><lb />that be when stacked against California S outra-<lb />geous 55 electoral votes?<lb /><lb />Suppose a candidate only carried the 32 states<lb />with 10 or fewer electoral votes. They would carry<lb />over half the states and only have 191 electoral<lb />votes of the 270 needed to win. On the other hand,<lb />another candidate would only need eleven states<lb />(CA, TX, NY, FL, IL, PA, OH, MI, GA, NC, NJ) to<lb />gain 271 electoral votes and the White House.<lb /><lb />_ Nevermind all that red state/blue state nonsense<lb />fora moment. Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon<lb />catried all 11 of those states and became president.<lb />George H.W. Bush and Lyndon Johnson each car-<lb />ried all but one. Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton each<lb />carried eight of the 11. How does that give smaller<lb /><lb />states more of a voice?<lb /><lb />Some historians: point out that eliveay was a<lb />factor behind the creation of the Electoral College.<lb />Slaves were counted as 3/5 of a person for propor-<lb /><lb />. tional representation in Congress, but could not<lb /><lb />vote themselves. The Electoral College would give<lb />slave states more of a voice than a straight popular<lb />vote. Its hard to make a case today based on that<lb />argument that is so obviously outdated.<lb /><lb />Look at a map of the 2004 presidential election<lb />results by county. Many of the larger states arent<lb />really that blue. With the exception of the coastal<lb />counties between San Francisco and Los Angeles,<lb />California is a red state. With the exception of<lb />Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is a red<lb /><lb />a red state. Not only does the Electoral College<lb />not represent the voters of the smaller states, but<lb />it neglects a good number of thé voters in larger<lb />states as well.<lb /><lb />Which is the more fair result: a cantlidnte.<lb />who wins the White House by carrying only a<lb />few large cities, or the candidate who carries the<lb />popular vote? .<lb /><lb />It is past time to do away with the Blectoral<lb /><lb />College. We may not always be happy with the<lb /><lb />results, but with the popular vote, there can be no ,<lb />accusations of stolen elections, and the peoples<lb />voices s will definitely be heard.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Obama to win<lb /><lb />JON. DOUGHERTY<lb />THe East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />In the midst of a presidential election, most media<lb />focus on national polls that survey citizens across<lb />the country to gain a composite picture of the<lb />nation. Using these national polls, we are able to<lb />watch trends in favorability and play the if the<lb />election were held today...? game. Most national<lb />polls show the two candidates, Barack Obama and<lb />John McCain in:a statistical dead heat--meaning<lb />a 3 to.4 percent difference, depending on the poll<lb />in question.<lb />There is just one problem with this method: .<lb /><lb />We dont hold a national election for president. In<lb /><lb />the U:S., we hold state elections for national office.<lb />Because of the Electoral College, each state elects<lb /><lb />. delegates to cast the votes for their fellow states-<lb /><lb />men. Instead of a popular vote, all that is required<lb /><lb />"of a candidate ate 270 electoral votes, 50 percent<lb />plus one, to assume the White House.<lb /><lb />It is because of this process that it is very likely "<lb /><lb />_ that on January 20, 2009, the nation will witness<lb /><lb />the swearing in of President Obama.<lb /><lb />RealClearPolitics.com, a clearing house of<lb />political, governmental and global news, compiles<lb />the most current polling data from every state in<lb />the nation and uses this information to maintain an<lb />up-to-date Electoral College map depicting where<lb />the race to. 270 stands. Dave Leips Atlas of U.S.<lb />Presidential Elections (uselectionatlas.org) shows<lb />the voting behavior of every state since 1789 as well<lb />as current polling trends and predictions.<lb /><lb />A truncated explanation due to limited space:<lb />States that are out of reach are considered strong.?<lb /><lb />States with a clear preference but perhaps not<lb /><lb />overwhelming are labeled leaning? and awarded "<lb />to the leading candidate. Toss-up? states are those ~<lb /><lb />whose data show a statistical dead heat and could<lb />break either way depending on the fortunes of the<lb /><lb />campaign.<lb /><lb />Obama currently holds 238 electoral votes on<lb />RealClearPolitics.com and 259 on Dave Leips<lb />Atlas. The totals for McCain are 174 and 194,<lb /><lb />_ respectively. The difference between the sources<lb /><lb />estimates represents Leips willingness to assign a<lb />state to a candidate even if the polling. data shows<lb />a mere 2 percent lead.<lb /><lb />This leaves only 126 electoral votes as toss-<lb /><lb />ups under RealClearPolitics.com and 85 in Leips<lb /><lb />system. An incomplete list<lb /><lb />of toss-ups include: Michigan (17 EV), Ohio (20<lb /><lb />EV), Florida (27 EV), Virginia (13 EV) and North<lb />Carolina (15 EV). Others include New Hampshire<lb />(4 EV), where-McCain launched his campaign and<lb />Colorado (9 EV), where the Democratic Party held<lb /><lb />. their National Convention. |<lb /><lb />The bottom line is Obama needs one major<lb />state and then two or three smaller ones to take<lb /><lb />- the presidency. Thats it. As long as he maintains<lb /><lb />footing in his secure states, he only needs 20 percent<lb />ofthe remainder.<lb /><lb />McCain, on the other hand, needs to sweep<lb />every toss BP state available to take the White<lb /><lb />House. This is a daunting task considering the<lb />. voting history of states like Michigan and Ohio,<lb /><lb />as well as previously Republican states like<lb />Colorado and Virginia which now have strong<lb />blue-collar democratic tendencies. WALLACE<lb /><lb />THE East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />America has turned the drug culture of the<lb />60s and 70s into the prescription drug frenzy of<lb />today. I cannot watch television without seeing at<lb />least one prescription drug commercial per show. °<lb />Prescription drugs are useful against illnesses, but<lb />some commercial prescriptions are treatment drugs<lb />for ailments? that should be fixed with better will .<lb />power.<lb /><lb />Two mental ailments that are over medicated<lb />are attention deficit disorder and male confidence<lb /><lb />-issues. I believe there are some children that hon-<lb /><lb />estly have an attention deficit. Everyone else is a<lb />victim of Saturday morning cartoon programming.<lb />Ten minutes of program followed by five minutes<lb />of commercials followed by another ten minutes<lb />of program for several hours. over. the span of a<lb />childhood can render some ill effects on trying to<lb />stay focused.<lb />The other batch of drugs that aE to be |<lb />rationed out is male enhancement pills. Whatever<lb />happened to the idea that believing in yourself will<lb />give you the greatest confidence? If confidence<lb />comes in pill form sold by Bob, whose smiling<lb />face is permanently fixed due to the lack of blood<lb />reaching his facial muscles, then chivalry 1 is turn-<lb />ing in its grave.<lb />Open drugs are the ones on the low end of the<lb />spectrum. Caffeine must be the most sold, low-<lb /><lb />grade speed drug. Salvia is interesting because<lb /><lb />it creates psychedelic effects but is legal in some<lb />states. Other interesting drugs are anything that<lb />can be made out of household products. Americas<lb />restrictions have produced a band of self-trained<lb />chemists. |<lb /><lb />Illegal driigs-are the black sheep of the drug<lb />family, but in a sad and practical reality, any<lb />substance can be abused and harmful. Let us not<lb />forget the woman who died in January 2007 from<lb />a water overdose in a radio station water-drinking<lb />contest. People have their vices, and they will find<lb />ameans of meeting the demands for them. The only<lb />problems created are the restrictions.<lb /><lb />People can commit heinous acts on others while<lb />on narcotics, but some of the most evil acts against<lb /><lb />_ others come out of greed and corruption. The heads<lb /><lb />of Enron were a prime example. The restric-<lb />tion against drugs also creates one of the biggest<lb />problems for U.S. drug traffickers. Drug related<lb />crimes and mafias exist because of restrictions. If:<lb />all drugs were legalized and handled correctly by<lb />the government, as seen in the 1933 film Gabriel<lb />Over the White House, then the state would beat out<lb />all competitors and would probably create revenue<lb />out of it. North Carolina recently gave into fueling<lb />gambling addictions and creating additional school<lb />funding by starting the lottery.<lb /><lb />People can and will find their fixes, whatever -<lb />they may be. Drugs and stimulants of all kinds<lb />surround many aspects of life. If humans have<lb /><lb />_been able to live with available narcotics up until<lb /><lb />the last 100 years, then where does the sudden fear |<lb />of a drug-ridden country c come from?<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />- Elise Phillips<lb />Editor in Chief.<lb /><lb />Natalie Jurgen Lara Oliver<lb />News Editor: . A<lb /><lb />The group consists of cur-<lb />rent ECU students, with majors<lb /><lb />ranging from chemistry to com- ©<lb /><lb />munication and theatre.<lb /><lb />Corey Brown formed the<lb />concept of Swash in 2002.<lb />Brown, who now works with<lb />Upright Citizens Brigade in<lb />New York, started the troupe<lb />under the impression that there<lb />were no groups like it before at ©<lb />ECU. At that time, improv was<lb />a relatively new and blossom-<lb />ing art form.<lb /><lb />Swash meets'every Tuesday<lb /><lb />and Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in the<lb /><lb />Messick building to: practice.<lb /><lb />_ A little known fact is that all<lb /><lb />rehearsals are open, so anyone<lb /><lb />can come and enjoy the per-.<lb /><lb />formance. 3<lb />- Just because its improv<lb />doesnt mean its not practiced...<lb />People ask us, ~Why do<lb />you need to practice? Isnt<lb />everything improvised any-<lb />ways? True, but theres a lot to<lb />be said for having a group mind<lb />and having everyone be on the<lb />same page,? Givens said: Plus,<lb /><lb />its a whole lot easier to memo--<lb /><lb />rize our lines that way.?<lb />Swashs first show of the<lb /><lb />season will be on September<lb />-10 at 8:00 p.m. in room 244<lb /><lb />of Mendenhall Student Center..<lb /><lb />The show will made up of<lb />team-based games and a little<lb />audience participation.<lb /><lb />Swash does more than just<lb />a few shows every semester. It<lb /><lb />_is also a group concerned with<lb /><lb />giving back to the community,<lb />giving all of its proceeds to<lb />the Eastern Carolina Humane<lb /><lb />Society. They are gearing |<lb /><lb />up for a busy semester, with<lb /><lb />events that all students at ECU "<lb /><lb />can enjoy.<lb />Were trying to work on<lb /><lb />hosting our very own improv<lb /><lb />festival,? Givens said. We<lb />have had a great response from<lb />several college and profes-<lb />sional troupes, so hopefully<lb />well be able to get it up and<lb />ready by our tentatively sched-<lb />uled date sometime in April.?<lb /><lb />For Givens, being a part<lb />of Swash has not only allowed<lb />him:to perform improv, but<lb />the support from the audience<lb />and devoted fans have gener-<lb />ated memories that he. will<lb />never forget.<lb /><lb />- T have a lot of great memo-<lb /><lb />ries but one that sticks out in my<lb />mind was from two seasons ago<lb />at. our final show,? he said. It<lb /><lb />was the first time we had done<lb /><lb />a bracket-style tournament, and<lb />we wanted it to be a huge show.<lb />I said we. should try to shoot<lb />for over 100 people to be in<lb /><lb />the audience, something that is_<lb />difficult to do, given the timing °<lb /><lb />{at the end of the school year<lb /><lb />before exams start].?<lb />Unfortunately for Givens,<lb /><lb />this was around the time that<lb /><lb />his grandfather passed away, ©<lb />making him unable to par-<lb /><lb />ticipate or even attend the<lb />final show.<lb /><lb />One of our members, Ryan<lb />Holden, gave me a call shortly<lb />after the show was over and he<lb />told me ~You got your wish,<lb />buddy. There were well over a<lb />hundred people here,? Givens<lb />recalled. That really touched<lb />me. Knowing that Swash had<lb /><lb />reached and surpassed our goal<lb /><lb />made me feel very proud.? .<lb /><lb />Swash recently held audi-<lb />tions for their troupe last week .<lb />in order to recruit new members<lb />for this years season.<lb /><lb />At the audition, we basi-<lb />cally ran through some of our "<lb />more popular games to get<lb />a good idea of what kind of<lb />talent everyone had,? said Rob<lb />Breiner, a Swash member who<lb />was present at the auditions. By<lb />running through those games,<lb />we got a good idea of everyones<lb />sense of humor and acting style<lb />was like and how well they<lb />could play our games.? .<lb /><lb />Swash also recruited mem-<lb />bers for their sister group, Swish,<lb />at the auditions. -<lb /><lb />Givens offers encourage-<lb /><lb />ment-to. those who are new to<lb /><lb />improv, saying that practice<lb />makes perfect, because the<lb />overall idea of i improv is to<lb /><lb />have fun.<lb /><lb />There arent any scripts to<lb />memorize, and if you mess up,<lb />its okay! The other thing Id tell<lb />them is to try and not be funny.<lb />The funniest instances in life<lb />are those that come naturally,?<lb />Givens added, All of our shows<lb />are free to everyone. While<lb />Pat Whites newfound pass-<lb />ing ability was the head-<lb />line heading into the game,<lb />Pinkney flew under the radar<lb />and in turn, played an effi-<lb />cient game.<lb /><lb />West Virginia is a great<lb />team, but were a great team<lb />too,? said Pinkney. The best<lb />team won today.?<lb /><lb />The Pirates now turn their<lb />focus to Conference USA<lb />foe Tulane as they travel<lb />to New Orleans to open up<lb />conference:play.<lb /><lb />If the hype of the canter:<lb />ence opener wasnt enough,<lb /><lb />, now ECU must worry about<lb /><lb />handling the attention that<lb />comes with knocking off two<lb />straight ranked opponents to<lb />open the season.<lb /><lb />If the victory over West<lb />Virginia is an indication, each<lb />Pirate victory from here on<lb /><lb />out will serve as a beacon for<lb /><lb />more and more attention.<lb /><lb />Weve learned how to<lb />win, but can we learn how<lb />to handle winning,? Holtz<lb />said. Today [West Virginia<lb />victory] was a big step in the<lb />right direction.?<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Defensive linemen Marcus Hands (92) and Josh Smith (91) corral West Virginia quarterback Pat White.<lb /><lb />AILEEN DEV"<lb /><lb />EAST CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />RONNIE WOODWARD<lb /><lb />THE East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />This time there was no Darius<lb />Reynaud and no Owen Schmitt.<lb />This time there was no explosive-<lb />ness and not even a touchdown<lb />scored by West Virginia.<lb /><lb />This time, the Mountaineers<lb />didnt stand a chance.<lb /><lb />The Pirates defense domi-<lb />nated No. 8 WVU this past<lb />Saturday by limiting Pat White,<lb />daring someone other than the<lb />Heisman Trophy candidate to<lb />beat them. The Mountaineers had<lb />no answer for that strategy and<lb />left Greenville with a 24-3 loss.<lb /><lb />In former coach Rich Rodri-<lb />guezs offense, what made West<lb />Virginia so dangerous was the<lb />plethora of weapons that were on<lb />the field at one time. If a defense<lb />tried to focus all of its attention<lb />on stopping Pat White or Steve<lb />Slaton, the Mountaineers other<lb />parts,? Darius Reynaud in partic-<lb />ular, would make a big play and :<lb />be the difference in the game.<lb /><lb />Two years ago, ECU was<lb />down one touchdown to the<lb />Mountaineers in the fourth quar-<lb />ter when Reynaud took a simple<lb />screen pass and sliced through<lb />the Pirate defense for a 60-yard<lb />touchdown reception that put the<lb />game out of reach.<lb /><lb /> OPINION page 7<lb /></p>

Last season, Reynaud had:<lb />two touchdown catches and 112:<lb /><lb />offensive yards in WVUs 48-7<lb />~win in Morgantown, W.Va.<lb /><lb />- Reynaud is now with the<lb />Minnesota Vikings and on Sat-<lb />urday, WVU looked very vanilla<lb />and disorganized on offense.<lb /><lb />The Mountaineers receiving -<lb />corps, trying to fill the void left.<lb /><lb />by Reynaud, managed just six<lb />catches for 39 yards. To put that<lb />in perspective, ECUs Dwayne<lb />Harris had two more catches and<lb />29 more yards by himself than<lb />WVUs receivers combined.<lb />The past two years,<lb />[Darius] Reynaud really burned<lb />us, along with Pat White,? said<lb />Van Eskridge, ECUs starting<lb /><lb />free safety. Holtz<lb />said. They did an unbelievable<lb />job. ... Their isnt a coverage that<lb />Pat White hasnt seen in the past<lb />three years and the plan wasnt to<lb /><lb />out-scheme them. Lets play fast,<lb /><lb />play physical, line up and keep<lb />the ball in front of us.?<lb /><lb />ECU dominated the line of<lb />scrimmage on both sides of the<lb />ball under this gameplan. White<lb />was sacked three times and<lb />never really looked comfortable<lb />at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. He<lb />frequently aborted pass plays<lb /><lb />Patrol<lb /><lb />Preah<lb /><lb />Firsts<lb /><lb />because of the pressure ECU<lb />was causing, opting to escape<lb /><lb />from the pocket and use his.<lb /><lb />feet instead. Although White<lb />led WVU in carries and rushing<lb />yards, he only threw for 72. and<lb />the Mountaineers longest pass<lb />play of the game was 13 yards.<lb /><lb />Our defensive line was:<lb />~amazing and the penetration<lb />that they were creating made ~<lb /><lb />things so much easier for<lb /><lb />the rest of the defense,? said:<lb /><lb />linebacker Pierre Bell.<lb />In last seasons matchup,<lb /><lb />the Mountaineers shredded<lb /><lb />ECUs defense with 599 yards<lb />on offense and had four differ-<lb />ent players score touchdowns<lb />in a true display of versatility.<lb />This time, aside from one long<lb /><lb />run by speedy running back<lb />Noel Devine, WVUs longest -<lb /><lb />play from scrimmage was a 23-<lb />yard run by White. Unlike years<lb />past, WVU displayed an offense<lb />that was way too dependent<lb /><lb />~on its quarterback and lacked<lb /><lb />playmakers on the outside.<lb />The: Pirates stressed the<lb /><lb />importance of eliminating the<lb /><lb />big play in preparation for<lb /><lb />WVUs offense.<lb />T watched the entire game<lb /><lb />from last year evéry. day this<lb /><lb />week,? Eskridge said. I came<lb />over early some days and stayed<lb />late on some days. <lb />ormer Pirates on d<lb /><lb />SEAN LABAR<lb /><lb />THE East CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />As the Tennessee Titans prepared to take on the visiting Jack-<lb />sonville Jaguars on Sunday, a side story rooting back to Dowdy-<lb />Ficklen Stadium and ECU football began.<lb /><lb />Former ECU greats David Garrard and Chris Johnson were<lb /><lb />both trying to establish themselves in. the NFL, but doing it in<lb /><lb />different ways.<lb /><lb />For former ECU quarterback David Garrard, the ian was about .<lb /><lb />establishing himself as the starter and leader of the explosive<lb />Jaguars offense. Garrard, who is ECUs all-time leading passer<lb />and leader of the Jaguars to the playoffs last season, is entering<lb />his first full season as the Jaguars starting quarterback.<lb /><lb />But the Tennessee defense proved to be too much to handle in<lb />a 17-10-win by the underdog Titans.<lb /><lb />The aggressive Titians defense contained the former Pirate<lb />standout, sacking him seven times and intercepting him twice.<lb /><lb />This is the sorest I have ever been,? Garrard told the<lb />Associated Press. I dont like being this sore.<lb /><lb />Titans coach Jeff Fisher accredited the win mainly?<lb /><lb />to his defense.<lb /><lb />If you get seven sacks in a ballgame, it speaks volumes of<lb />what yottre doing up front,? said Fisher. With the turnovers,<lb />it was definitely a huge day.. .we had to have that kind of oe<lb />definitely to win this ballgame.?<lb /><lb />There was another bright spot for the Titans, and it came as a<lb />~familiar face for ECU football fans:<lb /><lb />Former ECU running back Chris J ohnson, who led the NCAA<lb />in all-purpose yards last season, made his rookie debut with the<lb />Titans, proving that he has the skill and the speed to compete at<lb />the professional level.<lb /><lb />The opening offensive play for Tennessee was an 18 -yard<lb /><lb />dash by the speedy back that gave commentators, fans and oppos-<lb /><lb />ing players a little taste of what Johnson has to offer. Weve got<lb />somebody who can break that big one and get us six [points],?<lb />Titans defensive lineman Javon Kearse said of Johnson. On the<lb />defense, its incentive for us to get the ball back so we can watch<lb />this young boy use those fresh legs. "<lb /><lb />Johnson finished the day with 127 total yards before leaving<lb /><lb />the game a little early due to a light injury. He is expected to.<lb /><lb />play next week. .<lb />For Pirate fans, this comes as no surprise, ehnsidering it was<lb />this lighting speed that contributed greatly to ECUs victory over<lb />Boise State in the Hawaii Bowl last December.<lb />Tennesseefullback Ahmard Hall, who is the lead blocker for<lb />Johnson on most plays, is glad to have the former ECU star in the<lb />Titans backfield this season.<lb /><lb />He slips loose, hes gone, no one is going to catch him,? said<lb /><lb />Hall. Its so exciting because we havent had that here in a long<lb />time. Chis is the X factor. You put him in there, he can catch the .<lb /><lb />ball, you have to respect him when hes out wide, ...Weve got<lb /><lb />_a lot in store for Chris. Its only going to get bigger, and were<lb />only going to give teams more to prepare for each week with the<lb />threat of what Chris can do.?<lb /><lb />THE EAST. .CAROLINIAN ¢ SPORTS.<lb /><lb />isplay in NFLs opening week<lb /><lb />Former ECU running back Chris Johnson (28) prepares to catch.a pass from Titans quarterback Vince Young.<lb /><lb />Garrard and J ohirean exchanged olescantticn after the game,<lb />uniting together as: former ECU greats.<lb />The veteran Garrard is trying to find his identity by establish-<lb /><lb />ing himself as the leader of the Jauguars offense and the young ©<lb /><lb />rookie Chris Johnson is slowly, or maybe not so slowly, making<lb /><lb />SEPTEMBER 9, 2008<lb /><lb />ASSOCIATED PRESS -<lb /><lb />his mark in the Titans organization and NFL as a whole.<lb />~ Johnson stole the show in week one, but both are expected to<lb />represent ECU football well this season.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at sports@theeascarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Register for an elective that will give you the confidence and experience needed to become a leader.
