          <lb />PAGE 2<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN * NEWS<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY, JULY 30, 2008<lb /><lb />Lawmakers aim to tighten rules for credit card companies<lb /><lb />Stricter guidelines for<lb />college students in the<lb />works<lb /><lb />(MCT)<lb /><lb />Credit card companies beware:<lb />Congress is watching.<lb /><lb />A flurry of bills is in the works<lb />in the House of Representatives and<lb />the Senate that would rein in how<lb />those companies do business.<lb /><lb />One proposed change that has<lb />triggered interest among lawmakers,<lb />particularly as the economy sours,<lb />would make it harder for college stu-<lb />dents to qualify for credit cards.<lb /><lb />It really is Just too easy,? said<lb />Christine Lindstrom, the director<lb />of the Higher Education Project<lb />at the nonpartisan Public Interest<lb />Research Group. They will do<lb />anything to be the first card in col-<lb />lege students wallets. They dont do<lb />credit checks. They dont even know<lb />if students have income.?<lb /><lb />Companies often set up booths<lb />on college campuses and entice<lb />students with freebies such as T-<lb />shirts, sports caps, coupons for food<lb />and more, all in exchange for filling<lb />out an application.<lb /><lb />Brett Thurman, a student gov-<lb />ernment president at the Univer-<lb />sity of Illinois at Chicago, told a<lb /><lb />congressional hearing last month<lb />that he walked into a restaurant<lb />near campus last fall and saw four<lb />laptop computers set up to process<lb />credit card applications.<lb /><lb />A free sandwich was the reward.<lb /><lb />Students are poor, so apply-<lb />ing for a credit card with a $2,000<lb />credit limit is like winning the<lb />lottery for us,? Klassie Alcine, a<lb />student leader at the University of<lb />Missouri in Kansas City, said in<lb />an e-mail. So they end up getting<lb /><lb />between four to 10 credit cards "<lb /><lb />without blinking an eye.?<lb /><lb />Some companies have strict rules<lb />about signing up college students<lb />and make a strong effort to educate<lb />them about financial management.<lb /><lb />Kenneth Clayton, a credit card<lb />official with the group, told law-<lb />makers at last months hearing<lb />that while some students are not<lb />responsible with their finances,<lb /><lb />most manage their credit card-<lb /><lb />obligations well.<lb /><lb />Restricting access to this form<lb />of credit would result in great<lb />financial hardship for most card-<lb />holding college students and their<lb />families,? he said.<lb /><lb />However, thats just what two<lb />Missouri Democrats, Rep. Emanuel<lb />Cleaver and Sen. Claire McCaskill,<lb />hope to do. They have each worked<lb />in their reapers chambers on<lb /><lb />aig ee He :<lb /><lb />legislation to tighten the rules.<lb />Under their measures, stu-<lb /><lb />dents without jobs or the written:<lb /><lb />approval of parents or guardians<lb />would have to be at least 21 before<lb />they could qualify for credit cards.<lb /><lb />You cannot sign up students<lb />who have no source of income,?<lb />Cleaver said. If you do, parents or<lb /><lb />some co-signer would have to guar-.<lb /><lb />antee that bill would be paid.?<lb />McCaskill proposed her leg-<lb /><lb />islation last year; Cleaver, more _<lb /><lb />recently. Both are hopeful that their<lb />ideas will be included in the over-<lb />all credit-card bill that Congress<lb />develops. That probably won't be<lb />until next year.<lb /><lb />How widespread is credit card use<lb />among college students? How much<lb />are they in debt? Pick your study.<lb /><lb />According to a recent report from<lb />Student Monitor, a national syndicated<lb /><lb />market-research survey, 41 percent of +<lb />ed S<lb />college students have credit cards. Of =<lb /><lb />them, 65 percent pay their entire bill<lb />every month. The average balance for<lb />those who dont is $452.<lb /><lb />Meanwhile, Demos, a nonpar-<lb />tisan public-policy group, found in<lb />a report this year that the average<lb />credit card debt among college<lb />students ages 18-24 increased 11<lb />percent from 1989 to 2004. Nearly<lb />20 percent were in debt hardship,?<lb /><lb />up from 12 percent in 1989.<lb /><lb />cilatrd SE<lb /><lb />Nick Bennett, a 19-year-old soph-<lb />omore at Missouri State University,<lb />says he owes about $800 on his credit<lb />card. Hes slowly paying it off by<lb />working at a sporting goods store this<lb />summer. Even with the debt, Bennett<lb />said the card was a lifesaver.<lb /><lb />I wouldn't be able to pay frat<lb />dues or pay for books,? he said.<lb /><lb />However, if students such as<lb />Bennett aren't that concerned,<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />For nore tree Fnancial life lessons, like Aow to gez the Student Package with tree<lb />checking; Qa SWINGS account with noe tAe Changee?"? and Online Barking Service, check<lb />out Pry online Show at<lb /><lb />some people on Capitol Hill are,<lb />especially with the turmoil in the<lb />lending industry.<lb /><lb />~ No one should get a credit card<lb />that has not demonstrated credit-<lb />worthiness,? McCaskill said. The<lb />reason these kids are all getting the<lb />credit cards is because the credit<lb />card companies know that if the kids<lb />get into trouble, their parents, in all<lb />likelihood, will bail them out.?<lb /><lb />- Bank of Opportunity<lb /></p>

A positive body<lb />image and good self-esteem are<lb />battles that many women fight and<lb />often lose. eg<lb /><lb />Dove asked women living in the<lb />U.S. if they felt they were beauti-<lb />ful--only two percent answered<lb />yes. Eighty-one percent of women<lb />surveyed said that they feel the<lb />media and advertising set an unre-<lb />alistic standard of beauty that most<lb />women cant ever achieve.<lb /><lb />Statistics from the Centers for<lb />Disease Control and Prevention show<lb />that the rate of teen girls committing<lb />suicide rose 76 percent in 2004.<lb /><lb />Eating disorders and the misuse<lb />of sex as validation are other<lb />common ways that women also try<lb />to boost their self-esteem.<lb /><lb />Sadly, none of those options<lb />truly make women feel good about<lb />themselves or see how beautiful<lb />they really are.<lb /><lb />Dove, realizing the issues<lb />women face when confronted by<lb />an unrealistic definition of beauty,<lb />has made it its mission to make<lb />more women feel beautiful every<lb />day by widening stereotypical<lb />views of beauty.?<lb /><lb />In order to take action against<lb />this problem, Dove created two<lb />programs: the Dove Self-Esteem<lb />Fund (DSEF) and the Campaign<lb />for Real Beauty. Dove hopes that<lb />these programs will help girls and<lb />women all over the world defeat the<lb />many issues women face regard-<lb />ing societys perceived definition<lb />of beauty<lb /><lb />Through the DSEF, Dove,<lb />along with the Girl Scouts of the<lb />USA, conduct self-esteem work-<lb />shops and after school events for<lb />girls ages eight through 17. At<lb />these programs, girls participate<lb />in at least an hour-long educational<lb />program that teaches each of them<lb /><lb />about a positive self-image.<lb /><lb />With the hope of reaching five<lb />million girls by 2010, Dove has<lb />already helped an approximate 2.3<lb />million girls.<lb /><lb />Dove also provides a portion of<lb />the profit from every purchase of<lb /><lb />their products to the DSEF in order.<lb /><lb />to help conduct the workshops.<lb />The Dove Campaign for Real<lb />Beauty led to the decision to stop<lb /><lb />using professional models in their »<lb /><lb />ads. Doves plan to use regular?<lb />women of all ages, shapes and sizes<lb />is targeted toward the average<lb />woman in the U.S. :<lb /><lb />With their programs, Dove<lb />hopes that women will eventually<lb />speak out against the issues of<lb />unrealistic standards most women<lb />have set for themselves.<lb /><lb />Their cause is worthy, and the<lb />powers behind it are to be com-<lb />mended. UVesfiirrctort<lb /><lb />4207 Carolina Ave.<lb />252-975-1997<lb /><lb />-in the U.S., over 100,000 people<lb /><lb />receive speeding tickets each day,<lb />amounting to almost 41 million<lb /><lb />every year. North Carolina is<lb />the No. 8 state dishing out those<lb />dreaded pink slips of paper. |<lb />However, this can all be avoided<lb />by following a few simple tips from<lb /><lb />AOL Auto:.<lb /><lb />Stay within 5-10 mph of the<lb />surrounding traffic.<lb /><lb />If you insist on speeding, stay<lb />within this speed range and among<lb /><lb />other drivers on the road. Cops :<lb /><lb />are more prone to pull over the<lb />leader of the pack, so stay within<lb /><lb />the pack, because only one car can ,<lb /><lb />be pulled over at a time. The safest<lb />place is in the middle, because the<lb />lead drivers chances are higher of<lb />tipping off a-cops radar.<lb /><lb />Dont change lanes fre-<lb />quently, tailgate or drive<lb /><lb />aggressively.<lb /><lb />While you shouldnt do any<lb />of the above, because it is unsafe<lb />and rude to other drivers, doing<lb />this will make you stand out<lb />among other drivers. Always be<lb />courteous to others on the road,<lb />use a turn signal and stay a con- »<lb />siderable distance between other<lb />cars. Weaving in and out of traf-<lb />fic, cutting other drivers off or<lb />following too closely is easy for<lb />cops to notice, so keep with the<lb />flow of traffic and avoid being the<lb />center of attention.<lb /><lb />Watch your speed carefully<lb />and stay in right lanes.<lb /><lb />If you're the only car on the<lb />road, then dont speed, because<lb />you are just asking for it. (his<lb /><lb />~nickname for his rented Ford Taurus)<lb />and discusses every aspect of life with -<lb /><lb />Klosterman himself, in a brilliant,<lb />heavily musical sort of way.<lb /><lb />Chuck Klosterman has a musi-<lb />cal intellect. He experiences three<lb />relationships throughout his trip,<lb />meets locals at restaurants and<lb />bars in every town that he visits<lb />and somehow finds a way to com-<lb />pare many of them to song's he has<lb />heard or the way songs have made<lb />him féel in the past.<lb /><lb />Near the beginning of the book,<lb />Klosterman admits to having over<lb />2000 CDs and then disappointingly<lb /><lb />_ confesses that he will only bring<lb />600 on the trip. After reading this, .<lb /><lb />I thought that he might be a bit<lb />pretentious with all of his musical<lb />facts and figures, but soon found<lb />that he earned the right to boast<lb />about his musical collection.<lb /><lb />His ability to relate everything<lb />to music is sincere and proves him a<lb />very knowledgeable rock critic.<lb /><lb />He gives a hugely detailed<lb />account of how he believes Radio-<lb />heads Thom Yorke accidentally<lb />predicted the events of September 11<lb />in the bands 2000 album, Kida.<lb /><lb />With.each new town, person, or<lb />event he somehow relates it to some-<lb />thing he has experienced in the past,<lb />or something he hopes to experience<lb />in the future and almost always views<lb />it from a musical perspective.<lb /><lb />This book will not make you cry<lb />or laugh or cheer for any of its char-<lb />acters. Killing Yourself to Live is a bit<lb />cynical, much like the writer seems<lb />to be. When reading a book like this<lb />you are seeing the world as the writer<lb />sees it and taking part in their con-<lb />versations and their adventures.<lb /><lb />For the amount of time it took<lb /><lb />for me to read this, I saw the world "<lb /><lb />the way that Klosterman views it,<lb />or at least for the 21 days he was in<lb />his Tauntaun. <lb />WEDNESDAY, JULY 30, 2008<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ SPORTS<lb /><lb />PAGE 11<lb /><lb />Charlotte Bobcats finally re-sign Emeka Okator<lb /><lb />Former UConn star agrees<lb />to $72 million deal<lb /><lb />(AP)<lb />The Charlotte Bobcats ended a year<lb />of uncertainty with top rebounder and<lb />shot blocker Emeka Okafor on Tues-<lb /><lb />day by coming to terms on a six-year, |<lb /><lb />$72 million deal with the restricted<lb />free agent.<lb /><lb />The move comes a year after<lb />Okafor turned down a contract*for<lb />similar money and assures new coach<lb />Larry Brown will have the teams<lb />top inside presence when he begins<lb />his record ninth NBA coaching job<lb />in the fall.<lb /><lb />It was very important for us to<lb />get a deal done,? said general manager<lb />Rod Higgins. He creates a sense of<lb />security around the basket for us. Hes<lb />a guy that I think his skills are still<lb />developing in a lot of ways. Having<lb />Larry as our head coach now, Emeka<lb />will benefit having a great coach to<lb />teach him.?<lb /><lb />Higgins confirmed the deal Tues-<lb />day morning after ESPN.com first<lb />reported late Monday that the two<lb />sides were close to an agreement. Hig-<lb />gins said Okafor should sign the deal<lb />in the next few days. ©<lb /><lb />Okafor was the second ae patl<lb /><lb />pick in 2004 and the expansion Bob-<lb /><lb />cats first draft pick. He turned down<lb />Charlottes offer of $12 million a year<lb />last year, but settled on the same figure<lb />a year later.<lb /><lb />Few other teams have enough<lb />salary-cap space to offer restricted<lb />free agents big money. Many, includ-<lb />ing Andre Iguodala of Philadelphia,<lb />Josh Smith of Atlanta and Luol Deng<lb />of Chicago, remain unsigned.<lb /><lb />Okafor could have accepted a one-<lb />year qualifying offer worth about $7.1<lb />million and became an unrestricted<lb />free agent next year, meaning the<lb /><lb />Bobcats would get nothing in return<lb /><lb />if he left.<lb /><lb />But Okafor decided to accept the<lb />security of a long-term contract after<lb />Charlotte sweetened its offer.<lb /><lb />Okafors deal is similar to contracts<lb />given this offseason to big men Andrew<lb />Bogut of Milwaukee and Andris<lb />Biedrins of Golden State. But it marks<lb />the biggest player contract owner Bob<lb />Johnson has agreed to pay since he<lb />bought the team. :<lb /><lb />Its unfortunate when people<lb />criticize our ownership,? Higgins<lb />said. Last year we brought in Jason<lb />Richardson and signed [Gerald]<lb />Wallace. We're continuing to bring<lb />in very good talent. Securing Emeka<lb />just shows that our ownership and Bo<lb />are committed.?<lb /><lb />Okafor averaged 13.8 points and<lb /><lb />_said Okafors defense is invaluable<lb /><lb />10.7 rebounds a game last season, the<lb />fourth consecutive year hes averaged<lb />a double-double. Okafor also led the<lb />team in blocked shots (1.7 per game)<lb />and field-goal percentage (53.5).<lb />Brown had said it was critical they<lb />retain Okafor for his defense and inside<lb />presence on a team that struggled to<lb />rebound last season.<lb /><lb />Okafor said during the last week of<lb />the regular season that he wanted to<lb />remain a Bobcat, but he clearly had a<lb />strained relationship with coach Sam<lb />Vincent. Managing partner Michael<lb />Jordan fired Vincent after Charlotte<lb />finished 32-50 in his only season.<lb /><lb />Brown coached Okafor, but played<lb />him little, on the disappointing<lb />bronze-medal United States Olympic<lb />team in 2004.<lb /><lb />Okafor was plagued by a chronic<lb />ankle injury that limited him to 26<lb />games in the 2005-06 season. But he<lb />played in 67 games the following year<lb />and all 82 last season.<lb /><lb />While his offensive skills dont<lb />compare favorably to Orlandos<lb />Dwight Howard, taken one spot<lb />ahead of Okafor in the draft, Higgins<lb /><lb />to the Bobcats.<lb /><lb />Emeka played in 82 games last<lb />year and played at a high level,? Hig-<lb />gins said. We felt we needed to have<lb />him, with his inside presence.?<lb /><lb />MCT<lb /><lb />eS<lb /><lb />Emeka Okafor was selected as the NBA rookie of the Year in<lb />the 2004-2005 season.<lb /><lb /></p>
