<p>Opinion<lb /><lb />In your face!<lb /><lb />Knowing our food could<lb />lead to a slimmer America<lb /><lb />ANDREA ROBERTSON<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Restaurant chains in New York City are now.required to post their<lb />foods caloric information on their menus so that customers can clearly<lb />see what they are taking in.<lb /><lb />This new rule, which is unique to the Big Apple, is part of an anti-obe-<lb />sity campaign that was launched in 2006. However, due to court battles,<lb />the rules of the campaign were redrafted multiple times preventing them<lb />from coming into full affect until now. 7<lb /><lb />Chains in New York City, such as McDonalds and Burger King, who<lb />have had their nutritional information displayed on Web sites and tray<lb />liners, have now replaced their old menus with new menus containing<lb />the food items calories. .<lb /><lb />After previous lawsuits against fast food chains, in which plaintiffs<lb />blamed their weight gain on the lack of information about fat content and<lb />~calories, posting the calories next to the desired item is a positive change.<lb />No longer will people be able to rely on the excuse of ignorance while<lb />they enjoy their 1,130-calorie meal.<lb /><lb />With caloric-ignorance demolished, New. York customers will also be<lb /><lb />able to take a more active approach against obesity. People will have the<lb />opportunity to make an informed decision regarding a 293-calorie ham<lb />sub from Subway or a 540-calorie Big Mac.<lb /><lb />If New York City has passed legislation requiring their citys fast food<lb />chains to post caloric information on their menus, perhaps it is time for<lb />North Carolina and other jurisdictions to follow suit.<lb /><lb />North Carolina has also adopted its own anti-obesity campaign with<lb />programs like oGet Kids Into Action. This program was created in<lb />partnership by the University of North Carolina and Gatorade with the<lb />goal of ending childhood obesity.<lb /><lb />According to research gathered by Eat Smart, Move More North<lb />Carolina, and the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, in<lb />2006, 60.8 percent of North Carolina citizens were either overweight or<lb />obese. North Carolina was also found to have the fifth highest national<lb />rate of overweight children.<lb /><lb />Assuming that the obesity trend continues, obesity will eventually<lb />replace tobacco as North Carolinas number one cause of unnecessary<lb />deaths.<lb /><lb />Other campaigns have been created on a national level. Healthy<lb />People 2010 was launched in Jan. 2000 by the phe mages of Health and<lb />Human Services.<lb /><lb />Healthy People 2010 aims to have the saraiies of adults at a healthy<lb />weight to 60 percent by the year 2010. However, in 2006, North Carolinas<lb />rate of healthy-weighing adults was at 35 percent. The United States, as<lb />a whole, had a rate of 38 percent.<lb /><lb />These results show that American citizens are not progressing to a<lb />healthy weight as was hoped. It is not likely that North Carolina, let alone<lb />the entire nation, will reach the goal set by Healthy People 2010.<lb /><lb />If legislation similar to that which took affect in New York City,<lb />was passed at a national level, perhaps people would start making better<lb />decisions with food.<lb /><lb />Although many of us feel guilty about making poor choices while<lb />eating fatty foods, it is easy to rationalize our actions when we dont<lb />know the extent of how bad the double cheeseburger and large fries are<lb />for us. If we require food chains to openly share their nutritional facts<lb />on a national level, it could cause us to think twice, and ultimately lead<lb />to a healthier America.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />{ www.theeastcaroliniah.com }<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY JULY 23, 2008<lb /><lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />Its 6:30a.m., the project is due at<lb /><lb />9:45, and Im still just sitting here<lb />~ checking ESPN.com and Pirate<lb /><lb />Rants... For the first time in that<lb />span, it isnt Florida State.<lb /><lb />Clemson " coached by Tommy<lb />Bowden, the son of Bobby Bowden,<lb />major college footballs wins leader<lb />at Florida State_ was announced<lb />Monday as the favorite to win the<lb />ACC title. Its the first time Clem-<lb /><lb />son has been the leagues preseason ©<lb /><lb />choice since 1991, the year before<lb />the Seminoles entered the league.<lb /><lb />oI'd like to see him win every<lb />game but one " not us, said<lb />Bobby Bowden, whose team was<lb />picked third behind Clemson and<lb />Wake Forest in the ACCs Atlantic<lb />Division. oBut its good. If I cant be<lb />there, Id just rather him be next.<lb /><lb />Clemson picked up 59 of 65<lb />first-place votes in the leagues<lb />Atlantic Division balloting, and<lb />was an overwhelming choice "<lb /><lb />meetings in Georgia.<lb /><lb />named on 51 ballots " to win the<lb />overall ACC title and claim an<lb />automatic berth in the Bowl Cham-<lb />pionship Series. Defending league<lb />champion Virginia Tech easily<lb />picked up top honors to prevail in<lb />the Coastal Division, over North<lb />Carolina and Miami. ' =<lb /><lb />oIm not used to being in this<lb />position, Tommy Bowden said.<lb />oMy fathers more accustomed<lb />to handling this question than<lb />I am. But I think itl] definitely<lb />elevate competition.<lb /><lb />The Tigers have tons of offen-<lb />sive talent coming back, including<lb />quarterback Cullen Harper, two<lb />stellar tailbacks in James Davis<lb />and C.J. Spiller, and a breakout<lb />receiver in Aaron Kelly. And<lb />theres a clear sense that last years<lb />9-4 record won't be good enough<lb />in 2008 to Clemson.<lb /><lb />oWe've got all the guys coming:<lb /><lb />back, Harper said. oTypically,<lb />people dont get worse.<lb />The last time Florida State<lb /><lb />- wasnt a preseason favorite in the<lb /><lb />ACC, George Bush was president<lb /><lb />of the United States, the New<lb /><lb />see ACC page 13<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN SPORTS<lb /><lb />PAGE 11<lb /><lb />Toronto hosts 2008 MLS All-Star game<lb /><lb />MLS will face West Ham United<lb /><lb />HART HOLLOMAN<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />The 2008 MLS All-Star game will be held this<lb />Thursday at BMO Field in Toronto (ESPN, 7:30 pm).<lb /><lb />The affair will pit the MLS All-Stars against<lb />West Ham United of the English Premier League.<lb />It is the fifth time the All-Stars have faced a for-<lb />eign opponent and they will look to remain perfect<lb />against such opposition.<lb /><lb />MLS beat Chivas Guadalajara in 2003, dropped<lb />Fulham in 2005, surprised Chelsea a year later, and<lb />drove Celtic-out of Denver last year.<lb /><lb />The games have a tendency to polarize<lb /><lb />opinions on the progress of MLS and soccer in<lb />~ the U.S. in general. Supporters will point to the<lb /><lb />victories as a sign that soccer in the US is catch-<lb />ing up to the European leagues in quality, even if<lb />not in popularity.<lb /><lb />Detractors will claim that these games are a<lb />farce and point to the fact that because the Euro-<lb />pean teams are still in preseason, they are not<lb />match fit, so its not a fair test. The truth is some-<lb />where in the middle of these two opinions.<lb /><lb />MLS has come a long way since its inception.<lb />The league has done well to stay within its bounds<lb />as well as avoiding growing too fast too soon.<lb /><lb />Its development has been steady if not spectac-<lb />ular and the league has taken steps to ensure that<lb /><lb />homegrown talent is the major representation of<lb /><lb />the league. Thats not to say it has rejected foreign<lb />talent. In fact, many teams have looked outside the<lb />boarders of the U.S. to add creativity and experi-<lb /><lb />~<lb /><lb />©<lb /><lb />American mi<lb />storm since transferring from Europe last season.<lb /><lb />ence to their squads, but the core of the league still<lb />rests at the feet of U.S. born players. -<lb /><lb />On the other side of the coin, elite U.S. prospects<lb />are still using MLS as a springboard for careers in<lb />Europe. MLS still doesnt provide the week in-week<lb />out competition level that European leagues do.<lb /><lb />However, MLS does boast some great players who<lb />would fit into any league in the world. That is what this<lb />showcase game is mainly about, proving that MLS has<lb />talent that can compete with the best.<lb /><lb />see MLS page 12<lb /><lb />By 5:00pm<lb /><lb />2008-2009<lb /><lb />Application Deadline:<lb />Friday, August 15th, 2008<lb /><lb />The East Carolina University Student Government Association is now<lb />taking applications for SGA Cabinet and Elections Committee positions<lb />for the 2008-2009 academic year.<lb /><lb />The Elections Committee has the sole responsibility of publicizing,<lb />conducting and supervising all elections for SGA Offices and SGA ref-<lb />erenda in accordance with the SGA Constitution and Elections Rules.<lb /><lb />The SGA Cabinet works with the SGA Chief of Staff in advising the<lb /><lb />Student Body President and the Executive Council (Student Body Vice<lb />President, Treasurer, and pooreiaty) on matters relating to the duties of<lb />their respective offices.<lb /><lb />Application Available:<lb />SGA Suite (IMISC 101) or online at<lb /><lb />http://www.ecu.edu/sga/<lb /><lb />SGA Cabinet and Elections Committee<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />PY Vo<lb /><lb />East Carolina University<lb /><lb /> Geudene Government Associ iation<lb /><lb /></p>
