          <lb />Opinion<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />The Easy Way Out<lb /><lb />Is Not So Easy<lb /><lb />Putting a damper on<lb />diabetes<lb /><lb />ANDREA ROBERTSON<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Bariatric surgery, a procedure<lb />that many seek as a last resort<lb />to major weight loss, sometimes<lb />receives a bad reputation for giving<lb />its recipients an easy way out of<lb />weight problems. However, new<lb />research suggests that a bariatric<lb />surgical procedure could lead to a<lb />cure in type two diabetes.<lb /><lb />Originally, it was thought that<lb />to cure this type of diabetes all<lb />one needed to do was lose weight;<lb />however, the findings of Dr. Karen<lb />Foster-Schubert, an instructor at<lb />the University of Washington in<lb />Seattle, suggests that the metabolic<lb />and hormonal changes brought on<lb />by this surgery are responsible for<lb />alleviating type two diabetes, not<lb />simple weight loss alone.<lb /><lb />The CDC reports that out of<lb />the approximate 40 million people<lb />with diabetes, about 176,500 people<lb />20 years old and younger have this<lb />disease. Diabetes is no longer a dis-<lb />ease just hurting the elderly; people<lb />in their early 20s and teens are<lb />being afflicted by this epidemic.<lb /><lb />With more research conducted,<lb />not only will doctors be able to<lb />save their patients??T limbs, vision,<lb />and organs, they will be able to<lb />save their lives. By finding a cure<lb />for this diabetes through bariatric<lb />surgery, we can prevent some of the<lb />300,000 unnecessary deaths a year<lb />that are caused by obesity.<lb /><lb />This surgery is able not only<lb />to improve the quality of life, but<lb />also to ultimately save the lives<lb /><lb />of many who are overweight and -<lb /><lb />it may rid many of insulin depen-<lb /><lb />- dence. It is not a cure-all solution.<lb /><lb />People who receive a bariatric<lb /><lb />surgery are informed that this is<lb /><lb />a life-style change. Physicians tell<lb /><lb />their patients that if they do not<lb />: me<lb /><lb />and a better quality of life.<lb />Diabetes is not a disease that<lb /><lb />is easy to live with; patients must<lb /><lb />constantly check their insulin<lb /><lb />and be cognizant of what they.<lb /><lb />are ingesting. People suffer from<lb />diabetic comas, diabetic seizures,<lb />insulin attacks, amputations, organ<lb />loss and failure. If researchers can<lb /><lb />find a cure, it should be used to cure:<lb /><lb />those who need help.<lb /><lb />With all of these health find-<lb />ings, it is absurd to suggest that<lb />bariatric surgery is an unnecessary<lb />surgery. As researchers gain more<lb />knowledge of the effects of bariatric<lb />surgery on type two diabetes, we<lb />will hopefully not only be able to<lb />better the lives of millions but also<lb />be able to make this form of diabe-<lb />tes an epidemic of the past.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />{ www.theeastcarolinian.com }<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY JULY 16,2008 PAGE 5<lb /><lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />You know it??Ts not a good sign when<lb />the cheese biscuit lady recognizes<lb />you.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />TARBUCKS COFFE<lb /><lb />5 a<lb /><lb />P<lb /><lb />AcRos, LING THE LOCAL COFFEE<lb /><lb />THE STREET ouT oF BUSIN<lb /><lb />ING |<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate Rants.           <lb />PAGE 7<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ FEATURES<lb /><lb />Can cell phones cause cancer?<lb /><lb />Debate still puzzles ??"<lb />experts and consumers<lb /><lb />ERIN EDWARDS<lb />FEATURES EDITOR<lb /><lb />The cell phone is one of the most used<lb />technological advancements created over<lb />the past decade with over a billion people<lb />across the world owning at least one.<lb />According to estimates by the Cellular Tele-<lb />communications and Internet Association,<lb />over 219 million Americans subscribe to a<lb />cellular service, a number that has exploded<lb />since the introduction of wireless mobiles<lb />in the 1990s.<lb /><lb />However, many wonder if cell phones<lb />are doing more harm than good. It has been<lb />debated for over a decade, with differing<lb />opinions and data leaving many consumers<lb />and experts puzzled. With new reports<lb />coming from both sides of the argument, the<lb />question of whether cell phones are linked<lb />to cancer is heating up.<lb /><lb />Sometimes smaller than the palm of<lb />a hand, cell phones are equipped with the<lb />ability to reach anyone at any time almost<lb />??~anywhere in the world, but there has been<lb />speculation that there might be a link<lb />between the transmission of radio frequen-<lb />cies that could be absorbed by the head and<lb />neck. This has indicated to many experts the<lb /><lb />possibility of a link between cell phone use<lb />and three types of rare tumors, including<lb />glioma, cancer of the parotid (a salivary<lb />gland near the ear) and acoustic neruoma<lb />(a tumor that usually forms where the ear<lb />meets the brain).<lb /><lb />Normally, the types of radiation emit-<lb />ted by mobiles are non-ionizing, making<lb />them too weak to set off DNA damage that<lb />has been known to cause cancer. There is<lb />no known data indicating that this kind of<lb />radiation is responsible for cancer.<lb /><lb />The Food and Drug Administration<lb />has released information on three studies<lb />since 2000, concluding that cell phone<lb />usage shows no harmful effects. Research-<lb />ing a span of around three years, the FDA<lb />has noted that much of the research is<lb />flawed with no data pertaining to long-<lb />term exposures or indication of casual or<lb />heavy use.<lb /><lb />The long-standing debate has led<lb />to countless research efforts, including<lb />INTERPHONE, a series of international<lb /><lb />case-controlled studies of cancer in rela-.<lb /><lb />tions to mobile telephone use. Funded by<lb />the European Union, the INTERPHONE<lb />studies are comprised of various studies<lb />from over 13 countries,.all of which indi-<lb />vidually publish their findings. Tan skin is<lb />unhealthy skin.???<lb /><lb />Yet, students flock to the tan-<lb />ning bed, beach or pool for that<lb />golden tan every year. According<lb />to the Skin Cancer Foundation, 2.3<lb />million American young people use<lb />tanning beds each year in the U.S.<lb /><lb />According to Dr. Burke, it is<lb />estimated that we get 80 percent<lb />of our sun exposure by the time<lb />we are 21.<lb /><lb />Many students have heaed the<lb />warnings. Tanning can result in<lb />premature skin aging; damage to<lb />the immune system and of course,<lb />cancer, according to the American<lb />Academy of Dermatology; however,<lb />the myth that tan skin is healthy<lb />still pervades our society.<lb /><lb />Mallory Osbrown, tanning bed<lb />operator at the Sunshine Factory<lb />Tanning Salon in Greenville and an<lb />ECU graduate student, says that tan-<lb />ning beds are popular among college<lb />students and thinks that tanning at<lb />this age is worth the risks.<lb /><lb />??Despite the warnings, I think<lb />there are good effects that come from<lb />tanning beds,??? Dr. Burke said.<lb /><lb />- Dr. Burke says that one in three<lb />people from the Southern U.S.,<lb />like here in North Carolina, will<lb /><lb />develop basal cell skin cancer in<lb /><lb />their lifetime. This type of cancer<lb />can cause loss of appendages.<lb /><lb />An estimated one in 70 will<lb />develop melanoma, the deadliest<lb />form of skin cancer.<lb /><lb />Another scary statistic is that<lb />1.3 million new cases of skin cancer<lb />will be diagnosed this year, accord-<lb />ing to the American Academy<lb />of Dermatology.<lb /><lb />Although the statistics are out<lb /><lb />_ there, Dr. Burke says that many<lb /><lb />younger Americans are more con-<lb /><lb />cerned about how they look than.<lb /><lb />about developing skin cancer.<lb /><lb />The Skin Cancer Foundation??Ts<lb />official Web site says ??There??Ts<lb />nothing wrong with your natural<lb />skin tone: it shows you're smart<lb />about sun protection, which will<lb />keep you: looking younger longer.<lb />But for people who want some<lb />color without sacrificing their skin,<lb />sunless tanning lotions and sprays<lb />provide a safe option.???<lb /><lb />So how can you stay safe in the<lb />sun this summer?<lb /><lb />When going out in the sun, Dr.<lb />Burke suggests putting on an SPF<lb />15 sunscreen, 30 minutes before<lb />getting some rays, and applying<lb />it again every two to three hours<lb />after that.<lb /><lb />After years of warnings and<lb />statistics, many young Ameri-<lb />cans still opt for tan skin, but Dr.<lb />Burke says that those who put their<lb />looks over their health will not be<lb />happy later. .<lb /><lb />??The American Cancer society<lb />hasa saying, ??~fry now, pay later??T and<lb />it??Ts true,??? Exercise<lb />is a large factor often ignored that can eventually result<lb /><lb />in weight gain.<lb /><lb />??A lack of exercise can also be a problem that many<lb />people have while on vacation, but a way to combat that<lb />is to maintain a form of exercise that will burn some<lb /><lb />calories without having to feel like you are going to the<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />gym,??? said Bowers. ??For instance, ifsomeone is going to -<lb />the beach, taking a brisk walk on the beach or a couple of<lb />laps in the pool will make a considerable difference.???<lb /><lb />Using her own experiences, Bowers offers up the<lb />90/10 rule, meaning that if a person eats healthy 90<lb />percent of the time, then they can eat unhealthy 10<lb />percent of the time. Along with healthy food choices,<lb />Bowers recommends eating whole grains and fiber,<lb />which can help you feel fuller longer and cuts down<lb />on snacking between meals.<lb /><lb />So whether one chooses the grilled chicken over<lb />the fried chicken, healthy decisions are still possible<lb />while taking a break from everyday life. It is important<lb />to avoid creating excuses that can stray away from<lb />wise eating habits, but is it just as essential to allow<lb />yourself to splurge a little. There is always the<lb />potential for fan voting to turn into<lb />a popularity contest for the players<lb />in the biggest markets with the<lb />most passionate fan-bases, and not<lb />the most deserving players.<lb /><lb />But, this game is for the fans<lb />and the league stands by the selec-<lb />tion process. This season, there<lb />were a few strange selections<lb />turned in by the fans.<lb /><lb />In the National League, the<lb />Cubs dominated the selections<lb /><lb />with seven. Alfonso Soriano was<lb />selected by the fans as starter but<lb /><lb />. will be unable to participate due<lb /><lb />to injury.<lb />This is just as well because he<lb /><lb />should: have never been selected<lb /><lb />in the first place. His .283 batting<lb /><lb />average and extended time on the<lb /><lb />disabled list (he has been out since<lb />June 11 with a broken hand) hardly<lb />scream All-Star starter. After a<lb />horrendous start he did come on<lb />strong in May with 10 home runs,<lb />but he is still undeserving of All-<lb />Star status this season.<lb /><lb />Likewise, his teammate Kosuke<lb />Fukudome??Ts selection by the fans<lb />was unwarranted. His rather<lb />underwhelming stats of 7.HR, 36<lb />RBI and..279 average are solid for a<lb />Rookie of the Year candidate, which<lb />he most certainly is, but not exactly<lb />All-Star game starter quality.<lb /><lb />Another selection that might<lb />have gone in another direction<lb /><lb />was made by manager Clint}<lb />Hurdle in his decision to make the =<lb /><lb />Brewers??T Ben Sheets the National<lb />League starting pitcher. While<lb />he has been impressive with 10<lb />wins and 108 strikeouts, Tim<lb />Lincecum seemed to be the most<lb />impressive NL starter in the<lb />first half of the season (Sorry,<lb />Brandon Webb). The diminutive<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum goes through the motions of his patented -<lb />wind-up.<lb /><lb />Giants ace put up 11 wins and 135<lb />strikeouts with less run support<lb />than Sheets received from the<lb />potent Brewers line-up.<lb /><lb />On the American League side,<lb /><lb />it was the Red Sox who led the<lb />way with seven selections. While<lb />most were deserving of a spot<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />see MLB page 12<lb /></p>

Jen- -<lb /><lb />nings is rated as a top-10 prospect<lb />on just about every scouting list<lb />you will find. He is also widely<lb />considered the best point guard of<lb />the 2008 class.<lb /><lb />Jennings??T notoriety soared<lb />to new levels after an impressive<lb />12-point and nine-assist show-<lb />ing in the 2008 McDonald??Ts All-<lb />American Game. Jennings used the<lb />game to prove that he was capable<lb /><lb />of sharing the ball in addition to<lb />being a go-to scorer.<lb /><lb />The Californian commanded<lb />attention with his outgoing per-<lb />sonality and 1990's style fro. He<lb />instantly became one of the most<lb />recognizable members of the 2008<lb />class.<lb /><lb />Jennings??T exploits attracted<lb />the likes of Arizona, Connecticut,<lb />Kansas and USC to pursue a letter<lb />of intent. Lute Olson and Arizona<lb />secured the future starlet??Ts signa-<lb />ture, overriding a previous com-<lb />mitment to USC.<lb /><lb />In years past, college probably<lb />wouldn't have even been on Jennings??T<lb />radar, but the NBA??Ts age limit rule<lb />prohibited him from entering the<lb />NBA draft.<lb /><lb />Jennings??T recent announce-<lb /><lb />??~ment that he would pursue play-<lb /><lb />ing in Europe sent shockwaves<lb /><lb />throughout the basketball world. .<lb /><lb />Speculation insists that Jennings<lb />could not meet the minimum SAT<lb />scores necessary for him to suit up<lb />as a Wildcat. 2<lb /><lb />Rather than risk sinking into<lb />anonymity in the junior college<lb />ranks or the NBA Developmental<lb />League, Jennings is expected to<lb />be on the brink of signing with a<lb />European team.<lb /><lb />The idea is that Jennings would<lb /><lb />spend a season in Europe, collect a<lb />paycheck, and promptly enter the<lb />2009 NBA Draft. He would become<lb />the first American to bypass col-<lb />lege basketball for Europe.<lb /><lb />At just over 6-feet tall, many<lb />scouts. have compared the play-<lb />making lefty to Kenny Anderson<lb /><lb />and Allen Iverson??"so, finding an??T<lb /><lb />interested team is the least of his<lb />worries.<lb /><lb />Israel, Italy, and Spain would<lb />seem the most logical destinations<lb />for Jennings if he seeks the best<lb />competition.<lb /><lb />Lottomatica Roma has been<lb />rumored to have offered Jennings<lb />a two-year contract. Roma finished<lb />second in the Italian Serie A stand-<lb /><lb />-ings behind Montepaschi Siena,<lb /><lb />good enough for a Euroleague<lb />berth.<lb /><lb />_ The Spanish ACB League is<lb />widely considered the most com-<lb />petitive outside of the NBA and<lb />worldly cities such as Barcelona<lb />and Madrid could very well attract<lb />Jennings.<lb /><lb />Maccabi Tel Aviv??Ts dominance<lb />of the Israeli league, as well as their<lb />deep pockets, keep this Euroleague<lb />team in the picture as well.<lb /><lb />Will Jennings??T decision prompt<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />see JENNINGS page 13<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />~<lb /><lb />6)<lb /><lb />=<lb />Brandon Jenings plans on fine-tuning his game in Europe before making<lb />the jump to the NBA ee ;<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /></p>

Had<lb />Evan Longoria missed out on<lb />the last spot by fan vote, it would<lb />_ have been a glaring omission.<lb /><lb />Perhaps Jason Giambi did<lb />enough since his mustache-driven<lb />resurgence to earn a Selection,<lb />but the only player whose spot he<lb />could take was the also deserving<lb />Joe Crede.
