Jesse Helms<lb /><lb />Vice president, senators<lb />attend funeral<lb /><lb />(AP)<lb /><lb />Vice President Dick Cheney and a delega-<lb />tion of US senators joined hundreds of other<lb />mourners who paid their respects Tuesday at<lb />the funeral of former Sen. Jesse Helms, a five-<lb />term Republican who died on the July 4.<lb /><lb />Helms family sat in the front pews of the<lb />packed 800-seat sanctuary at Hayes Barton<lb />Baptist Church in Raleigh, where Helms wor-<lb /><lb />_ Shipped for decades and served as a deacon.<lb /><lb />A bipartisan group of federal and state<lb />officials listened during a nearly hour and a<lb />half service as friends and family recalled the<lb />conservative icon, who inspired both love and<lb />disdain for his strong views. ae<lb /><lb />Jesse Helms always stood his ground,?<lb />said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell,<lb />(R-Ky.) from the pulpit. <lb />He put duty above all<lb />else " duty to God, to country, to family--the<lb />simple duty of treating other people well.?<lb /><lb />Helms, who spent three terms in the<lb />US Senate, died at age 86 after years of<lb />declining health.<lb /><lb />Sen. Elizabeth Dole, who took Helms seat<lb />when he chose not to seek re-election in 2002,<lb /><lb />, attended the service with her husband, former<lb />Republican presidential candidate Kansas Sen.<lb />Bob Dole: Her counterpart, GOP Sen. Richard<lb />Burr, sat nearby.<lb />Democratic Sens. Chris Dodd of Connecti-<lb /><lb />AP<lb /><lb />Helms casket, draped with the American flag, as it leaves the funeral site.<lb /><lb />cut and Joe Biden of Delaware also were seated<lb />in the pews, along with Gov. Mike Easley and<lb />several state political figures. Cindy McCain,<lb /><lb />wife of presumed Republican presidential _<lb /><lb />nominee John McCain, also was on hand as<lb />others gathered to watch the funeral service<lb />remotely from a church gym.<lb /><lb />Jimmy Broughton, Helms former chief<lb />of staff, recalled for the crowd how a woman<lb />from Raleigh needed help with Social Security<lb />benefits. Her neighbor, a Democrat, couldn't<lb />help her with the problem, but advised her to<lb />call Helms for help.<lb /><lb />The neighbor told her, <lb />I despise the SOB,<lb />but I think its high time you call Jesse Helms,?<lb />Broughton said, drawing laughter.<lb /><lb />The coffin of Helms, who served in the.<lb /><lb />Senate from 1973 to 2003, was covered with<lb />a US flag as the front of the sanctuary was<lb />decorated with flowers sent by US senators and<lb />a painting of Helms at work. Choir members, in<lb />red silk robes, stood behind friends and family<lb />who spoke during the service.<lb /><lb />Cheney did not speak at the funeral nor<lb />issue any statements to reporters. But his<lb />spokeswoman, Lea Anne McBride, said, <lb />The<lb /><lb />vice president went just to pay his respects and<lb />spend some time with the family.?<lb /><lb />Helms won his first election in 1972 after<lb />a career in newspapers, radio and television<lb />commentaries and rose to become a powerful<lb />committee chairman:<lb /><lb />' Helms is remembered by many for his<lb />opposition to the 1964 Civil Rights Act, and<lb />was considered a polarizing figure both at<lb />home and in Washington.<lb /><lb />He never lost a political race, but his<lb />margin of victory was never large. In the<lb />Senate, he forced roll-call votes that required<lb />Democrats to take politically difficult votes<lb />on cultural issues, such as federal funding for<lb />art he deemed pornographic, school busing<lb />and flag-burning. .<lb /><lb />He also ran racially tinged campaigns in<lb />his last two runs for Senate, defeating former<lb />Charlotte Mayor Harvey Gantt, who is black,<lb />in 1990 and 1996.<lb /><lb />In the first race, a Helms commercial<lb />showed a white fist crumpling up a Job applica-<lb />tion, as a narrator said, <lb />You needed that job,<lb />and. you were the best qualified. But they had to<lb />give it to a minority because of a racial quota.<lb />Is that really fair??<lb /><lb />As he aged, Helms was slowed by a vari-<lb />ety of illnesses, including a bone disorder,<lb />prostate cancer and heart problems, and used<lb />a motorized scooter to navigate the Capitol as<lb />his career neared an end. In April 2006, his<lb />family said he had been moved into a conva-<lb /><lb />see HELMS page 3<lb /><lb /></p>

<p>Opinion<lb /><lb />Rest in peace,<lb />Jesse Helms<lb /><lb />North Carolina has lost a political giant<lb /><lb />_J.D. LEWIS<lb />OPINION EDITOR<lb /><lb />Former Senator Jesse Helms passed away July 4. The first Republican<lb /><lb />elected to the U.S. Senate from North Carolina in the 20" century, Helms -<lb /><lb />was one of the founding fathers of the American conservative movement<lb />and one of the last of the old school Southern gentlemen..<lb /><lb />One thing is for sure: people either loved him or hated him. Conserva-<lb />tives revere him asa champion for the unborn and the sanctity of marriage<lb />and as a voice for the <lb />little guy.?<lb /><lb />Liberals eschew him for those same reasons as well as his opposition<lb />to civil rights legislation, the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday and AIDS<lb />funding.<lb /><lb />Into the 21° century, at a time when being a southern, white, Chris-<lb />tian male was supposedly something to be ashamed of, Helms stuck to<lb />his principles and continued to be a thorn in the lefts collective side. He<lb />said what he meant and didnt mind whose toes he stepped on, and he was<lb />vilified as a racist, sexist and homophobic demagogue.<lb /><lb />Those who wanted to crucify him were as bigoted as they claimed him<lb />to be, but to the liberal mind, obviously, tolerance is a one-way street.<lb /><lb />I never met Sen. Helms in person, but I carried on a years-long friend-<lb />ship with him through the mail. We corresponded on a number of issues,<lb />as well as on a personal level. He was always kind and he encouraged my<lb />political aspirations. I sent him a Bill Clinton $3 bill for Christmas one<lb />year, and he sent me a hilarious thank you note telling me how much fun<lb />he was going to have with it and how there were a lot of people in D.C.<lb />who would love to print the bills for real.<lb /><lb />Last semester, I wrote my senior thesis in history on the 1984 Senate<lb />race between Helms and Gov. Jim Hunt and learned of a special relation-<lb />ship between Sen. Helms and this university.<lb /><lb />In 1973, when Gov. Jim Holshouser and moderate Republicans in the<lb />General Assembly were dragging their feet on funding for the new ECU<lb />medical school, Helms convinced conservative Republicans to ally with<lb />Democrats for the establishment of the medical school.<lb /><lb />Its interesting that there was no mention of that on any of the message<lb />boards Ive read concerning the senators death, nor any mention of the<lb />times he helped Vietnamese families living in NC to bring their relatives<lb />over from the communist state.<lb /><lb />There was scarcely mention of how he worked across the aisle with<lb />both of Bill Clintons Secretaries of State to reform the United Nations.<lb />There was mostly just a lot of whining from a bunch of pansies with no<lb />respect for the dead. They even failed to mention that Helms admitted he<lb />was wrong to block AIDS funding for so many years and that he worked<lb />to rectify that during his last years in office.<lb /><lb />One writer said we would never forget Jesse Helms, nor should we<lb />ever forgive him. Then he went on to complain about the various afore-<lb />mentioned issues and ended by saying he hoped Helms enjoyed his stay<lb />in hell. Everyone who tries to demonize this one man seems to forget<lb />that more than half the voters of this state obviously shared his views to<lb />a certain extent or he wouldn't have been elected five times.<lb /><lb />It came as quite a blow when I learned of Jesse Helms death. No, we'll<lb />never forget him, and theres nothing to forgive.<lb /><lb />Rest in peace, my friend.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY JULY 9, 2008<lb /><lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />Why do we have vocabulary quizzes?<lb />We are in college.<lb /><lb />PAGE 5<lb /><lb />{ www.theeastcarolinian.com }<lb /><lb />YOU'RE KIDDING!<lb />WERE GOING TO<lb />WAI WITH IRAN?<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate<lb />Rants. While the<lb />Food and Drug Admin-<lb />istration has recently<lb />cleared many. tomatoes,<lb />the mystery still remains<lb />as officials begin look-<lb />ing for other causes of<lb />the outbreak.<lb /><lb />In a report released by<lb />the FDA, food safety chief<lb />Dr. David Acheson con-<lb />cludes that <lb />tomatoes aren't<lb />off the hook,? but calls for<lb />a look beyond. Investiga-<lb />tors from the FDA say<lb />that tomatoes might not<lb />even be to blame, as 1700<lb />samples taken from farms<lb />in Mexico and Florida all<lb />returned negative. 3<lb /><lb />Now the focus has been<lb />shifted to food associated<lb />with tomatoes, including<lb />salsa, salads and pastas.<lb /><lb />infections may possibly develop. For infants,<lb />the elderly and individuals with weak immune<lb />systems, there is a better chance of complications<lb />from the infection, even including death if not<lb />treated properly.<lb /><lb />Along with physical effects, many compa-<lb />nies, including suppliers and restaurants, have<lb />reported the loss of millions of dollars just from<lb />the removal of tomatoes. The National Restau-<lb /><lb />grocery stores were careful about handling the<lb />tomatoes, because there is no way to know if<lb />they got rid of the contaminated ones after other<lb />ones were cleared,? said Bova. <lb />If there still has<lb />not been a source located to where this outbreak<lb />started, then it definitely does not make me con-<lb />fident.. For now, I am sticking to the tomatoes<lb />in my garden back home.?<lb /><lb />As news spread nationwide, ECU students felt<lb />the effects of the outbreak<lb />as some of their favorite<lb />foods were removed from<lb />Greenville and Campus<lb />Dining. After receiv-<lb />ing proper information<lb />and notification from<lb />the FDA, ECU Campus<lb />Dining stopped serving<lb />tomatoes on June 7.<lb /><lb />After receiving<lb />precautions about the<lb />contaminated produce,<lb />we pulled tomatoes and<lb />anything prepared with<lb />tomatoes,? said Allison<lb />Metcalf Woodard, the dis-<lb />trict marketing manager<lb />for Campus Dining. <lb />We<lb />alerted students properly,<lb />mainly to explain why we<lb />had pulled the certain<lb />foods, but also to inform<lb />them overall of what was"<lb />occurring. Our goal was<lb />to give as much informa-<lb />tion to our customers as<lb />soon as we could and in<lb />this way, they could take<lb />personal steps to ensure<lb />their safety and health.?<lb /><lb />Campus Dining rein-<lb />troduced tomatoes and<lb />associated foods after<lb />being cleared by the FDA<lb /><lb />While ingredients for<lb />these dishes have come<lb /><lb />~under a watchful eye, the<lb /><lb />FDA is also examining the packing and shipping<lb />process of select produce.<lb /><lb />The outbreak has caused severe conse-<lb />quences throughout the country. According to<lb />the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,<lb />over 900 people in 40'states have been confirmed<lb />ill with Saintpaul, a rare salmonella strain.<lb /><lb />For those that have been exposed to salmo-<lb />nella, symptoms usually begin 12 to 72 hours<lb />after infection and include diarrhea, fever and<lb />abdominal cramps. These will usually last<lb />four to seven days, and while many people can<lb /><lb />recover without any form of treatment, severe<lb /><lb />Over 900 people have gotten ill from eating contaminated tomatoes nationwide so far.<lb /><lb />rant Association has reported that the outbreak<lb />cost the food industry over $100 million.<lb /><lb />Financial and physical issues are not the<lb />only effects caused by the scare. With a lack of<lb />adequate traceability and some states still not<lb />in the clear, consumer confidence is wavering,<lb />lowering restaurant demand and overall satisfac-<lb />tion with tomatoes.<lb /><lb />Although the FDA has cleared North<lb />Carolina tomatoes, ECU student Jessica Bova<lb />is still hesitant about eating them from local<lb />restaurants or grocery stores.<lb /><lb />You can never know if restaurants or<lb /><lb />but allowed students to<lb />opt out if they remained<lb />unsure about the food.<lb /><lb />If students are still uneasy about their food,<lb />we ask that they inform staff, who will gladly<lb />prepare the food fresh without tomatoes and not<lb />just pick them off,? Woodard said.<lb /><lb />In recent developments, the FDA has conan<lb />investigating possible outbreak sources in three<lb />major tomato-growing states im Mexico, but<lb />remain unsure of the cause, or if' tomatoes were<lb />even responsible for the epidemic.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted by<lb />features@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /></p>

Last year, ECU beat UCF<lb />52-38 in a game that was closer<lb />than the score indicates.<lb /><lb />Even after suffering the loss,<lb />the Golden Knights went on to<lb />claim the Conference USA champi-<lb />onship thanks in part to the Pirates<lb />devastating loss to a lowly Mar-<lb />shall team late in the season. Last season, ECU<lb />stunned the Cougars at home in<lb />a 37-35 win. Revenge should be on the<lb />Pirates mind after last years bitter<lb />34-20 defeat to the Pack.<lb /><lb />Its fair to say that ECU doesnt<lb />have a running back on the roster<lb />as talented or the caliber of player<lb />as Chris Johnson was last year.<lb /><lb />For the Pirates, the answer to<lb />the offense last season was basi-<lb />cally to give Johnson the ball and<lb />let him take over. This year the<lb />question of who will fill his shoes<lb />has still not fully been answered<lb />and probably will not be until at<lb />least the middle of the season.<lb /><lb />Solid running backs like Domi-<lb />nique Lindsay, Jonathan Williams<lb />and Norman Whitley will all fight<lb />for positions on the depth chart<lb /><lb />come fall, but it remains to be -<lb /><lb />seen if any can have the presence<lb />on the field that Johnson had and<lb />demanded. Finding a solid starter<lb />will be key in the Pirates season<lb />and in making the quarterbacks<lb />life a little bit easier.<lb /><lb />Last year, Rob Kass was slated<lb />to be the starter against Virginia<lb />Tech but due to off-the-field trou-<lb />bles, Patrick Pinkney ultimately<lb />became the starter for the majority<lb />of the season and he made the most<lb />of it. A year later, Pinkney is listed<lb />as the No.1 quarterback on the<lb />depth chart in the preseason with<lb />Kass slated as the backup.<lb /><lb />Holtz has stated numerous times<lb />that he wants to stand behind one<lb />starter but doesnt rule out switch-<lb />ing back to a two quarterback unit.<lb />However, if Pinkney can lead the<lb />Pirates in an effective manner, the<lb />job is clearly his to lose.<lb /><lb />While ECUs defensive line<lb />could potentially go down as the<lb />best in Pirate history, the secondary<lb />is hoping to make drastic improve-<lb />ments to avoid becoming one of the<lb />worst in respect to that unit in the<lb />history of the university.<lb /><lb />Last season, the Pirate sec-<lb /><lb />Skip Holtz is ee than two months away from etnoanigta on his fourth<lb /><lb />ondary was among the worst in<lb />the nation and C-USA in passing<lb />defense. The Pirates inefficiency<lb />to stop the pass made most games<lb />high-scoring shootouts. Now after<lb />losing only one senior, the second-<lb />ary is hoping that 2008 means more<lb />experience and better results.<lb /><lb />In each season that Skip Holtz<lb />has coached ECU, the Pirates have<lb />gotten better and better.<lb /><lb />With last years Hawaii Bowl<lb />victory, it remains to be seen just<lb />what the Pirates have in store for<lb />an encore. Multiple players have<lb />indicated that this season is simply<lb />Liberty Bowl or bust..To reach the<lb />Liberty Bowl, ECU will have to<lb />manage a schedule that is once again<lb />top heavy with Virginia Tech, West<lb />Virginia and NC State all being<lb />among the first four opponents.<lb /><lb />While those games dont nec-<lb />essarily have a say in the confer-<lb />ence race, it is important for ECU<lb />to fight through those contests and<lb />pick up some momentum to take<lb />into conference play. The road to<lb />an East division title likely runs<lb />though UCF and Southern Miss<lb />so those games are critical to the<lb />2008 season to say the least.<lb /><lb />In the feel good story of the<lb />season, junior offensive tackle<lb />Terence Campbell will be return-<lb />ing to action for the first time<lb />since 2006 after rehabilitating<lb />from emergency heart surgery.<lb />Right now,. Campbell is listed as<lb />second-string, but if his play prior<lb />to his illness is any indication, then<lb />he could be starting once again<lb />sooner than later.<lb /><lb />IfECU can overcome such a diffi-<lb />cult schedule and address these issues,<lb />this will truly be a season to remem-<lb />ber"and it goes without saying--the<lb />road to success runs through the<lb />Liberty Bowl in Memphis.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb /></p>
