They also discarded food and beverages<lb />prepared prior to the alert, and maintained communi-<lb />cation with the Pitt County Health Department.<lb /><lb />According to GUC??Ts website, fecal coliforms are<lb />bacteria that indicate that water may be contaminated<lb /><lb />with human or animal wastes. Microbes in these<lb /><lb />wastes can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches .<lb /><lb />or other symptoms. They pose a special risk for<lb />children, the elderly and people with ees age<lb />immune systems.<lb /><lb />Bacterial contamination in the water supply can<lb />occur when increased runoff enters the drinking water<lb />source, such as after heavy rains. It can also happen due<lb />to a break in the distribution pipes, or due to a failure<lb /><lb />??~during the water treatment process.<lb /><lb />After discovering the contamination, GUC imme-<lb /><lb />diately began testing sites around the system to deter-_<lb /><lb />mine its extent, and began flushing the lines to clear<lb />the bacteria out. The point of contamination was soon<lb />discovered to be along County Home road, and the rest<lb />of the city was cleared to use the water.<lb /><lb />Two days after the alert was initially issued, on<lb />June 27, Greenville Utilities officially rescinded the<lb />alert for all-customers. I have<lb />fallen even more in love with the<lb />band. This song has been the band??Ts<lb />most popular, rising to number one<lb />on the Billboard charts.<lb /><lb />My love for Coldplay, however,<lb />nearly faltered when I heard a<lb />rumor of Chris Martin stealing<lb />the melody of ??oViva La Vida??? from<lb />Creaky Boards, an aspiring New<lb />York band. .<lb /><lb />According to Creaky Boards??T lead<lb />singer, Andrew Hoepfner, his band<lb />performed their song ??oSongs I Didn't<lb />Write??? before Coldplay released their<lb />song ??oViva La Vida.??? Creaky Boards<lb />thought that they saw Coldplay??Ts lead<lb />singer, Chris Martin, at a show where<lb />they preformed ??oSongs I Didn??Tt<lb />Write??? in October 2007.<lb /><lb />Assuming that Chris Martin<lb />stole their melody, Creaky Boards<lb />found it to be very frustrating<lb />to see the praise and fame Cold-<lb /><lb />??~play was receiving for what they<lb />believed to be their song, so they<lb />moved forward with a claim that<lb />Coldplay stole their melody.<lb /><lb />I couldn??Tt fathom that a band<lb />that I believed to be so original<lb />had taken advantage of their fame<lb />and assumed that no one would<lb />even know that Andrew Hoepfner<lb />was the real creator of the song??Ts<lb />melody, meaning that Coldplay<lb />felt it was all right to steal another<lb />band??Ts music.<lb /><lb />Luckily for Coldplay, this alle-<lb />gation of plagiarism was proven<lb />to be false. The night that Creaky<lb />Boards thought they saw Chris<lb />Martin, Martin was actually in<lb />London recording. Also, Coldplay<lb />began working on ??oViva La Vida???<lb /><lb />??omonths before Hoepfner taught his<lb />band ??oSongs I Didn??Tt Write.???<lb /><lb />After gaining this knowledge,<lb />Creaky Boards dropped their claim,<lb /><lb />and Coldplay remains in my heart<lb /><lb />as one of the best and most creative<lb />bands to emerge from the 1990s.<lb />Even though Coldplay was<lb />found to be innocent of plagiarism,<lb />many artists are getting away with<lb />plagiarism in the form of sampling.<lb /><lb />I don??Tt know if it is due to lack of<lb />creativity or if it is flattery in the<lb />form of emulation, but the influx of<lb />songs containing the work of other<lb />bands is getting to be ridiculous.<lb /><lb />I find it very hard to respect<lb />people as musicians and songwrit-<lb />ers if they cannot create new and<lb />original music.<lb /><lb />With that in mind, it is a shame<lb />that both Coldplay and Creaky<lb />Boards created a melody that was<lb />so similar. Andrew Hoepfner said<lb />in jest that Nintendo??Ts Fairy Theme<lb />from Zelda, which was his inspira-<lb />tion for his melody, must have influ-<lb /><lb />~ enced both bands at the same time,<lb /><lb />making Nintendo the real winner.<lb />Hopefully, neither band will<lb /><lb />lose fans due to this alleged, but<lb /><lb />false, plagiarism.<lb /><lb />Ifanything, Creaky Boards will<lb />gain fans from this publicity; I know<lb />they have gained a fan in me!<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />= LTS<lb /><lb />CAA<lb /><lb />y<lb />i.<lb /><lb />SS<lb /><lb />/<lb /><lb />onto theeastcarolinian.com to submit a Rant of your own.<lb /><lb />| totally agree; more John McCain<lb />PLEASE!<lb /><lb />Not only do | like to look at all these<lb />new girls walking around during<lb />orientation, | like looking at their hot<lb /><lb />moms.<lb /><lb />Libertarians are just constipated<lb />Republicans.<lb /><lb />So, even though | work two jobs<lb />because my parents don??Tt support<lb />me, I??Tve qualified for financial aid<lb /><lb />in the past, and | filed my taxes<lb />independently from my parents, | still<lb />count as a dependent of them in the<lb />US until ??T'm 24? This is the first<lb /><lb />hint that WALL-E won't be<lb /><lb />business as usual.<lb /><lb />WALL-E (short for ??owaste<lb />allocation load lifter Earth-<lb />class???) is a boxy little robot<lb />with big binocular eyes on a<lb />long E.T. neck. Every day he<lb />gets up, recharges his batter-<lb />ies in the sunshine and gets<lb />to work picking up armfuls<lb />of junk. He places the refuse<lb />in his trash-compactor body,<lb />reducing it to large cubes,<lb /><lb />which he stacks to form soar-_<lb /><lb />ing pyramids.<lb /><lb />There are lots of these<lb />pyramids, suggesting that<lb />WALL-E has been hard at<lb />work for centuries. From the<lb />carcasses of worn-out robots<lb />we surmise that he once had<lb />help, but now he??Ts alone.<lb /><lb />Well, not quite. He does<lb />have a pet cockroach, a sign<lb />that inside his rusty frame there<lb />lurks something like a soul. And<lb />WALL-E is obsessed with an<lb />old video of Hello, Dolly! that<lb /><lb />he watches at night in the trash<lb /><lb />bin he calls home. He??Ts particu-<lb />larly fascinated with a scene in<lb />which a boy and girl sit on a<lb />bench and shyly hold hands. The<lb />guy's a romantic.<lb /><lb />So when one day a strange<lb />spacecraft lands nearby and<lb />deposits a sleek white robot<lb /><lb />that floats effortlessly in mid<lb /><lb />air, WALL-E is smitten. (You<lb />can tell by his mechanical bur-<lb />blings, whistles and sighs).<lb />This graceful visitor is<lb />Eve (Extraterrestrial Vegeta-<lb />tion Evaluator), sent by what??Ts<lb /><lb />left of mankind to check out<lb />conditions on Earth. At first<lb /><lb />she regards WALL-E as a<lb />threat and very nearly blows<lb />him away with her intimidat-<lb />ing arsenal. Gradually she<lb />learns to tolerate her annoy-<lb />ing suitor. And when he pro-<lb /><lb />duces what she??Ts been looking<lb />for--a lone spindly seedling<lb />that somehow has sprouted<lb /><lb />up among the refuse --her<lb /><lb />mission is complete and she<lb />heads for home with WALL-E<lb /><lb />a stowaway on her rocket.<lb />What??Ts amazing about all<lb /><lb />see WALL-E page 8<lb /><lb />MCT<lb /><lb /></p>

That<lb />marked the best score by an American<lb /><lb />in 16 years and bested Dan O??TBrien??Ts???<lb /><lb />Olympic trials record. .<lb />While Clay can relax now, Wariner<lb />and Merritt still have work to do.<lb /><lb />It figures to be a two-man show when.<lb />_they meet Thursday in the finals, though<lb /><lb />you didn??Tt have to work hard to see them<lb />go at it on this night, either -- even though<lb />the air was thick with haze and smoke due<lb />to winds blowing northward from the<lb />forest fires in California.<lb /><lb />Wariner was in lane 4, Merritt in<lb />lane 5, and Merritt had a lead on the<lb />backstretch. But at about the 250-meter<lb />mark, Wariner started reeling him in. He<lb />had a comfortable lead down the stretch<lb />and, though Merritt closed the gap at the<lb />very end, it wasn??Tt by enough.<lb /><lb />Merritt said that, like Wariner,<lb />his top priority was to make the final.<lb /><lb />Asked if he wanted Wariner next to him<lb /><lb />again Thursday, when the top three<lb /><lb />finishers get trips to the Olympics, he<lb />said ??olanes do make a difference.???<lb /><lb />??oThey shouldn??Tt, but come Thurs-<lb />day, all you??Tve got to do is run your<lb />race. No matter what lane youre in, if<lb />you run your race, you'll be all right,???<lb />Merritt said.<lb /><lb />Wariner has said he thinks he has a<lb />good shot at Michael Johnson??Ts venerable<lb />world record of 43.18 seconds at some<lb />point this summer, and Johnson said Sat-<lb /><lb />_urday he thinks Wariner might be better<lb /><lb />off with someone pushing him.<lb />Merritt appears to be the guy,<lb />though his win last month was some-<lb /><lb />-what unexpected. The only other time<lb /><lb />Wariner hadn??Tt beaten him head-to-<lb />head was when he pulled up and did not<lb />finish. This was their first rematch.<lb /><lb />??oIt didn??Tt startle me,??? Wariner said<lb />in an interview Saturday. ??oThere have<lb />been races in the past where LaShawn<lb />has been with me at the 300 mark.<lb />The difference was, in those races,<lb />my finish was stronger. And in the final<lb />group match, when his keeper was<lb />sent off with no remaining substi-<lb />tutes for his side, he donned the<lb />goalie shirt and finished out the<lb />victory in goal.<lb /><lb />MID: Wesley Sneijder, Neth-<lb />erlands- Sneijder was the midfield<lb />maestro for the team that appeared<lb />to be the class of the tournament<lb />after the group stage. Sneijder<lb />scored two goals and set up two<lb />more in three games of work during<lb />the tournament. He seemed to be<lb />the only Dutch player who wanted<lb />to win against Russia in the quar-<lb />ters and nearly put them through<lb /><lb />_ by himself: He also scored the goal<lb /><lb />of the tournament against France<lb />when his curling, long range effort<lb />beat the keeper and clipped the<lb />crossbar on the way in.<lb /><lb />MID: Andrei Arshavin, Russia-<lb />Arshavin lifted his team to new<lb />levels when he returned to the<lb /><lb />see EURO page 12<lb /><lb /></p>

He<lb />led the tournament with four goals<lb />and his late winner against Sweden<lb />showed the type .of instincts pos-<lb />sessed by a top striker. They also discarded food and beverages<lb />prepared prior to the alert, and maintained communi-<lb />cation with the Pitt County Health Department.<lb /><lb />According to GUC??Ts website, fecal coliforms are<lb />bacteria that indicate that water may be contaminated<lb /><lb />with human or animal wastes. Microbes in these<lb /><lb />wastes can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches .<lb /><lb />or other symptoms. They pose a special risk for<lb />children, the elderly and people with ees age<lb />immune systems.<lb /><lb />Bacterial contamination in the water supply can<lb />occur when increased runoff enters the drinking water<lb />source, such as after heavy rains. It can also happen due<lb />to a break in the distribution pipes, or due to a failure<lb /><lb />??~during the water treatment process.<lb /><lb />After discovering the contamination, GUC imme-<lb /><lb />diately began testing sites around the system to deter-_<lb /><lb />mine its extent, and began flushing the lines to clear<lb />the bacteria out. The point of contamination was soon<lb />discovered to be along County Home road, and the rest<lb />of the city was cleared to use the water.<lb /><lb />Two days after the alert was initially issued, on<lb />June 27, Greenville Utilities officially rescinded the<lb />alert for all-customers. I have<lb />fallen even more in love with the<lb />band. This song has been the band??Ts<lb />most popular, rising to number one<lb />on the Billboard charts.<lb /><lb />My love for Coldplay, however,<lb />nearly faltered when I heard a<lb />rumor of Chris Martin stealing<lb />the melody of ??oViva La Vida??? from<lb />Creaky Boards, an aspiring New<lb />York band. .<lb /><lb />According to Creaky Boards??T lead<lb />singer, Andrew Hoepfner, his band<lb />performed their song ??oSongs I Didn't<lb />Write??? before Coldplay released their<lb />song ??oViva La Vida.??? Creaky Boards<lb />thought that they saw Coldplay??Ts lead<lb />singer, Chris Martin, at a show where<lb />they preformed ??oSongs I Didn??Tt<lb />Write??? in October 2007.<lb /><lb />Assuming that Chris Martin<lb />stole their melody, Creaky Boards<lb />found it to be very frustrating<lb />to see the praise and fame Cold-<lb /><lb />??~play was receiving for what they<lb />believed to be their song, so they<lb />moved forward with a claim that<lb />Coldplay stole their melody.<lb /><lb />I couldn??Tt fathom that a band<lb />that I believed to be so original<lb />had taken advantage of their fame<lb />and assumed that no one would<lb />even know that Andrew Hoepfner<lb />was the real creator of the song??Ts<lb />melody, meaning that Coldplay<lb />felt it was all right to steal another<lb />band??Ts music.<lb /><lb />Luckily for Coldplay, this alle-<lb />gation of plagiarism was proven<lb />to be false. The night that Creaky<lb />Boards thought they saw Chris<lb />Martin, Martin was actually in<lb />London recording. Also, Coldplay<lb />began working on ??oViva La Vida???<lb /><lb />??omonths before Hoepfner taught his<lb />band ??oSongs I Didn??Tt Write.???<lb /><lb />After gaining this knowledge,<lb />Creaky Boards dropped their claim,<lb /><lb />and Coldplay remains in my heart<lb /><lb />as one of the best and most creative<lb />bands to emerge from the 1990s.<lb />Even though Coldplay was<lb />found to be innocent of plagiarism,<lb />many artists are getting away with<lb />plagiarism in the form of sampling.<lb /><lb />I don??Tt know if it is due to lack of<lb />creativity or if it is flattery in the<lb />form of emulation, but the influx of<lb />songs containing the work of other<lb />bands is getting to be ridiculous.<lb /><lb />I find it very hard to respect<lb />people as musicians and songwrit-<lb />ers if they cannot create new and<lb />original music.<lb /><lb />With that in mind, it is a shame<lb />that both Coldplay and Creaky<lb />Boards created a melody that was<lb />so similar. This is the first<lb /><lb />hint that WALL-E won't be<lb /><lb />business as usual.<lb /><lb />WALL-E (short for ??owaste<lb />allocation load lifter Earth-<lb />class???) is a boxy little robot<lb />with big binocular eyes on a<lb />long E.T. neck. The makers of this film seem<lb />to have tremendous faith in the<lb />intelligence of their audience.<lb /><lb />It??Ts in WALL-E??Ts second act<lb />that things get iffy.<lb /><lb />WALL-E and Eve rendezvous<lb />with the Axiom, a massive ship that<lb />is home to what??Ts left of mankind.<lb />After 700 years of being waited on<lb />hand and foot by robots, humans<lb />have devolved into bulbous, pear-<lb />shaped couch potatoes who drift<lb />about on motorized recliners. Their<lb />unused limbs have atrophied, their<lb />minds have been numbed with non-<lb /><lb />stop entertainment, their children<lb /><lb />are bred in test tubes.<lb /><lb />Which apparently is fine with<lb />Auto, the computer autopilot that<lb />runs the Axiom. Auto is shaped<lb />like a ship??Ts wheel and has the same<lb />single red glowing eye so familiar<lb /><lb />from HAL 9000 in Kubrick??Ts 2001:<lb /><lb />A Space Odyssey. (At one point the<lb />soundtrack even blares out ??oAlso<lb />Sprach Zarathustra.??? )<lb /><lb />Ostensibly Auto serves his<lb />human makers, but like many rulers<lb />he wants to preserve the status quo.<lb />WALL-E and Eve??Ts news that earth<lb />is once again habitable threatens<lb /><lb />his reign. It??Ts up to the usually<lb />ineffectual ship??Ts captain (voiced by<lb />Jeff Garlin) to defy this mechanical<lb />mutineer and steer the Axiom back<lb />to her home planet.<lb /><lb />While the film??Ts opening passage<lb />is quiet and measured, the Axiom<lb />sequence is busy and a bit silly. A<lb />small army of robots must be battled,<lb />tricked or coerced by WALL-E and<lb />Eve, and the high jinks are so dense<lb />and frantic that it??Ts hard to keep<lb />track of who??Ts who.<lb /><lb />Worse, the film fritters away<lb />its gentle, even heartbreaking<lb />mood by attempting to placate the<lb />kids in the audience. In its second<lb />half WALL-E becomes confusing<lb />and cluttered and fails to deliver<lb /><lb />- the emotional payoff we??Tve been<lb /><lb />waiting for.<lb /><lb />Moreover, the film is rarely<lb />funny in a conventional sense. Odd<lb />and quirky? Certainly. Laugh-out-<lb />loud? Hardly ever.<lb /><lb />Whatever its shortcomings as<lb />narrative, WALL-E is a brilliant<lb />visual accomplishment, a sci-fi saga<lb />in a palpably believable environ-<lb />ment (at least until the cartoonish<lb />humans show up).<lb /><lb />An uneven blend of brooding<lb />art film and kiddie comedy, WALL-<lb />E falls short of greatness. According to American Airlines, leisure<lb />travel is at an all-time low, while business travel still<lb />drives the market.<lb /><lb />However, these tips can help any traveler see the<lb />world for a fraction of the regular costs. Though over-<lb />seas travel may still be pricy, hopefully these tips will<lb />help to make your travels affordable and enjoyable.<lb /><lb />1) Check airline deals.<lb /><lb />Europe??Ts low-fare carriers are good for more than<lb />cheap airfares--many also sell packages (plane tickets<lb />and hotel rooms for a bargain price) and offer hotel<lb />and car-rental specials. Holidays.EasyJet.com has<lb />hundreds of packages in dozens of European cities,<lb />many departing out of London. However, the deals<lb />will require careful planning and a fot of patience:<lb />EasyJet does not fly to the US, so you will have to<lb />connect to it in a hub like London.<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ FEATURES<lb /><lb />2) Dig deep into tourism websites.<lb /><lb />Tourism bureau websites are often loaded with<lb />overly rosy descriptions of a place, but some can also<lb />have good deals. Just as you would save money on<lb />gas at home, use a bike to get around the city you are<lb />visiting. In Paris, about 20,000 bikes are available for<lb />short-term rentals at hundreds of pickup and drop-off<lb />spots. You buy a Vélib??T card for 1.50 Euros per day<lb />or 7 Euros per week; each bike is then free for the<lb />first half hour, 1.50 Euros for the second half hour, 3<lb />Euros for the third half hour and 6 Euros for every<lb />half hour after that.<lb /><lb />3) Find free deals at your destination.<lb /><lb />Though it is said there is no such thing as a free<lb />lunch, you may find some free entertainment in the<lb />city you are traveling to. Scour the Internet before<lb />your trip for free museums, concerts, cultural events<lb />and activities--you may be surprised by what??Ts out<lb /><lb />there.
