They also work against<lb /><lb />drug-resistant infections, such as<lb />MRSA. Because the peptides origi-<lb />nated in reptiles, they dont recognize<lb />the cells of mammals, including<lb />humans. This has the effect of an<lb />extremely low toxicity.<lb /><lb />The peptides that Hicks and his<lb />collaborators are researching are<lb />based on natural peptides found in<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />the skin of crocodiles. According<lb />to Hicks, a biologist noticed that<lb />crocodiles in the Amazon would<lb />fight and wound each other, but<lb />they never got infections from<lb />the water. However, a person who<lb />got into the water with even a<lb />small cut would very likely get a<lb />bacterial infection.<lb /><lb />The peptide in the skin of the<lb />crocodile was<lb />soon isolated,<lb />and research-<lb />ers found it<lb />worked well for<lb />healing wounds<lb />and prevent-<lb />ing infection.<lb />Unfortunately,<lb />the peptide had<lb />too short a lifes-<lb />pan for practical<lb />medicinal use.<lb /><lb />What Hicks<lb />and his collabo-<lb />rators have done<lb />is take amino acids that dont occur<lb />in nature, and synthesizing peptides<lb />that mimic the natural ones, with the<lb />benefit of a much longer lifespan.<lb /><lb />We build the peptides almost<lb />to specifications " certain parts for<lb />longer half-life, selectivity, things<lb />like that,? Hicks said.<lb /><lb />There are two tests for the<lb />project before clinical develop-<lb />ment. The first, which has been<lb />conducted successfully before, is<lb />to determine whether the pep- .<lb />tides can cure an infection of<lb />gram-positive and gram-negative ©<lb />bacteria. For the test, the infec-<lb />tions used will be anthrax and the<lb />bubonic plague.<lb /><lb />There is no FDA-approved<lb />treatment for anthrax or plague, so<lb />the peptides success against them<lb />is important,? Ya'll are the only reason | go<lb /><lb />to class.<lb /><lb />Opinion<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />{ www.theeastcarolinian.com } -<lb /><lb />Not my parties...<lb /><lb />And I'll cry if | want to<lb /><lb />J.D. LEWIS<lb />OPINION EDITOR<lb /><lb />_ In 2006, the Democratic Party won control of both houses of Congress<lb />on a platform of change. Things changed all right; they got worse. Don't<lb />get me wrong. After 12 years of Republicans in power, the country desper-<lb />ately needed a change of direction--its just a shame that the Democrats<lb />were the only alternative. After all, they were thrown out 12 years before<lb />for much the same reason the Republicans were two years ago.<lb /><lb />Now were right back where we started from. The Democrats are going<lb />to change everything again with the help of Barack Obama. Obama has yet to<lb />tell us how hes going to change things, but hes going to do it nonetheless.<lb /><lb />Frankly, Barack Obama and even John McCain are incapable of real<lb />change. They'll just put forth another version of the same thing. There<lb />are very few new ideas being put on the table, and nearly 23.6 million<lb />Independent voters"including myself"have no true representation.<lb /><lb />I left the Republican Party four years ago in protest of what I viewed<lb />as increased suppression of civil liberties by all levels of government.<lb />That being the case, the Democratic Party certainly wasnt an option for<lb />me. The Libertarian Party seemed to best fit my needs, so I changed my<lb />voter registration in time for the 2004 elections. :<lb /><lb />Shortly thereafter however, me and thousands of other NC Libertar-<lb />ians received word that we would become unaffiliated registrants thanks<lb />to NCs asinine ballot access laws, some of the most restrictive in the<lb />country. To qualify as an official political party in this state, the party's<lb />candidates for president and governor had to have received 10 percent of<lb />the popular vote in the previous election.<lb /><lb />With the major parties so entrenched, 10 percent is wishful thinking<lb /><lb />for anyone not associated with the two. And since the Republicans and<lb /><lb />Democrats are the ones who write the laws, they have effectively shut the<lb />smaller parties out and ensured their continued domination. Until this<lb />year, thanks to a petition drive and help from the courts, the Libertarian<lb />Party lost its status as a party in NC, and the Democrats and Republicans<lb />have continued their stranglehold on state and national government.<lb /><lb />America is the only major democracy I am aware of with a legislative<lb />branch made up of only two parties. The French Parliament is made up<lb />of members from 15 different parties. Italy has 13, Britain 11, Australia<lb />nine, Japan eight, Israel seven, Germany. six and Canada four, with an<lb />independent or two scattered throughout several.<lb /><lb />The US House has no independent representatives, and the Senate<lb />has only two independent Democratic clones: Socialist Bernie Sanders of<lb />Vermont and Joe Lieberman of Connecticut.<lb /><lb />I was a strong supporter of Sen. Lieberman's independent bid, and had hoped<lb />that after the shabby way he was treated by fellow Democrats following the 2006<lb />primary, he would tell Harry Reid, Hillary Clinton, et al where they could go<lb />" while resisting Republican overtures " and become a true independent voice in<lb />the Senate for the millions of us with no voice ... and possibly a viable independent<lb />presidential candidate in 08. But he has since been quoted as saying, Call me<lb />a Democrat,? and although he has endorsed John McCain for President, he still<lb />caucuses with the Democrats on their other pet issues. Thanks, Joe.<lb /><lb />The time is right for a strong third party movement in this country. I'd<lb />like to think that the last election " and probably the one coming up " was<lb />not so much an endorsement of the Democrats as it was a repudiation of the<lb />Republicans. Think what could have happened in this country had there<lb />been other viable alternatives to the Democrats ... and Republicans.<lb /><lb />Most of the countries I mentioned earlier have so many parties that<lb />they are forced to form coalition governments. More voices are heard, and<lb />a broader spectrum of ideas is presented " not two versions of the same<lb />thing like in the United States. None of those other countries have been<lb />plunged into chaos as a result, and it won't spell certain doom for this<lb />country if the Democrats and Republicans lose some of their grip either.<lb /><lb />As far as the 08 election, Im taking a closer look at Bob Barr, the Lib-<lb />ertarian nominee for President. I hope a lot more people will do the same.<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />~To the ranter who thinks we should<lb /><lb />_ product ... not that it was a bad idea.<lb /><lb />I ASK GOQD~<lb />@ QUESTIONS ||<lb /><lb />ACCEPT NO |<lb />EVASIONS<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />ee<lb /><lb />TIM RUSSERT, 1950-2008<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate<lb />Rants. However, much of that<lb />energy is wasted money, says<lb />energy conservationists.<lb /><lb />But college students especially<lb />are feeling the effects of the high<lb />prices of energy usage.<lb /><lb />Jennifer George, a senior com-<lb /><lb />munications major at ECU, stated<lb />that her electricity bill with four<lb />other roommates last month was<lb />about $1000. For example, turn<lb />down the AC during the day when<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />no one is in your home and then turn<lb />it up again 30 minutes before you or<lb />someone else is due to arrive home.<lb />According to the U.S. Department<lb />of Energy (DOE), you could. cut<lb />your heating and cooling bills by<lb />10 percent annually just by turning<lb />your thermostat back 10 percent to<lb />15 percent for eight hours a day. <lb />Weare getting a digital thermo-<lb />stat. Even<lb />when all of your home electron-<lb />ics are turned off, many continue<lb />to suck down energy. In fact, idle<lb />TVs cost US consumers $600 mil-<lb />lion annually, or $5 per household,<lb />according to the'EPA. If an item is<lb />not in use, plug it into a power strip<lb />and cut the entire strip off when you<lb />are not around to use it.<lb /><lb />5) © -Go green:<lb /><lb />This will require some work;<lb />however, the benefits outweigh the<lb />effort. Planting just three shady<lb />trees around your house can whack<lb />$100 to $250 off your annual heat-<lb />ing and cooling costs, according to<lb />the DOE. Leafy trees shield your<lb />home from direct sunlight, keeping<lb />temperatures down.<lb /><lb />These easy steps can help you<lb />stay on top of the rising prices due<lb />to energy costs as well as help ease<lb />the pain of high bills.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />features@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />"Watnright<lb />Property Management. The conference<lb />sportsmanship awards are pre-<lb />sented to student-athletes, coaches<lb />or teams that perform an individual<lb />act of sporting behavior or gener-<lb />ally conduct themselves with a high<lb />degree of good sportsmanship.<lb /><lb />The other individuals recognized<lb />for the 2007-08 season were Andy<lb />Smith of the University of Memphis<lb />and Tara Watts of Rice University.<lb /><lb />Handsfield has participated in<lb />the championship final in all three<lb />of his individual events at the last<lb />four C-USA Championship Invita-<lb />tionals. He was voted captain of the<lb />team as a sophomore and has held<lb />that distinction for the last three<lb />seasons. The senior compiled a 3.97<lb />GPA in physics and was on the Stu-<lb />dent Athlete Advisory Committee<lb /><lb />_ the last two years. The Morehead<lb /><lb />City, N.C. native coordinated of all<lb /><lb />the swim teams community ser-<lb /><lb />vice activities, including working<lb />with the Pitt County Latino stu-<lb />dents, Project ARISE, Pitt County<lb />Humane Society, the Special Olym-<lb />pics and the ALS Walk.<lb /><lb />He recently received one of 11<lb />Conference USA Postgraduate schol-<lb />arship awards as well as being named<lb />second-team Academic All-America<lb />for a second consecutive season.<lb /><lb />Smith is a veteran offensive line-<lb />man for the Tigers football team.<lb />He helped anchor the offense and<lb />is one of the vocal leaders on the<lb />squad. Smith also leads by example<lb />on and off the field and takes his<lb />role as a leader very seriously. The<lb />senior has participated in various<lb />community service events, including<lb />speaking to elementary school chil-<lb />dren and working youth football<lb />camps. On Martin Luther King Day,<lb />he joined several other Tiger ath-<lb />letes in volunteering at the National<lb />Civil Rights Museum and he often<lb />speaks to students at Sea Isle Elemen-<lb />tary School.
