        <p>Opinion<lb /><lb />{ www.theeastcarolinian.com }<lb /><lb />A look at young: stars<lb /><lb />Role models or harlots?<lb /><lb />ANDREA ROBERTSON<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />I recently received the latest<lb />edition of Rolling Stone, and<lb />upon opening it, I was immedi-<lb />ately brought to laughter by an<lb />advertisement for Nashville Star,<lb />a television show hosted by Billy<lb />Ray Cyrus.<lb /><lb />This man, ~whose one hit<lb />debuted before I entered kin-<lb />. dergarten, has found his way<lb />back into the spotlight through<lb />his 15-year-old daughter, Miley<lb />Cyrus. Sadly, by using his daugh-<lb />ters coattails to gain fame, he<lb />will probably ruin this young<lb />girl-- or at least her reputation.<lb />Celebrities like Lindsay Lohan,<lb />Britney Spears and Christina<lb /><lb />Aguilera all have a few things<lb /><lb />in common: sex, drugs and<lb />Disney. I predict a similar path<lb />for Miley Cyrus.<lb /><lb />First known for her mullet-<lb />wearing father and Disney<lb />series Hannah Montana, Miley<lb />Cyrus recently had two new<lb />calls to fame: her underwear<lb /><lb />picture that was released on.<lb /><lb />the internet, and her seem-<lb />ingly topless photo-in Vanity<lb /><lb />Fair. Both of these photos<lb />were serious embarrassments<lb />for which Cyrus deeply apolo-<lb />gized. Unfortunately, it seems<lb />that inappropriate pictures are<lb />the first step into the vortex of<lb />lost innocence for young Hol-<lb />lywood starlets.<lb /><lb />Like Vanessa Hudgens from<lb />High School Musical, who had<lb />a mishap with nude photos<lb />being released, Disney is<lb /><lb />still keeping Cyrus on board.<lb /><lb />However, I dont understand<lb />how these girls should continue<lb /><lb />to be viewed as role models.<lb /><lb />These young women should have<lb />enough insight to know that if<lb />they take inappropriate photos,<lb />these pictures will somehow<lb />find a way to get leaked to the<lb />public and ultimately influ-<lb />ence young girls to take their<lb /><lb />-clothes off.<lb /><lb />Cyrus says that she wants<lb />to follow in the path of Hillary<lb />Duff, rather than Lohan and<lb />Spears, because Duff has sup-<lb />posedly made it cool to be good.<lb />If that is the case, then why are<lb />there so many pictures of Duffin<lb />revealing clothes? Not only that,<lb />but Duff is a few years older than<lb />Cyrus, thus she can get away<lb />with wearing less clothing and<lb /><lb />it is more acceptable. Duff is a<lb /><lb />grown. woman.<lb /><lb />Cyrus is a 15-year-old girl<lb />who is posing as a role model<lb />for girls as young as five. She<lb />shouldnt be comparing herself<lb />to an adult.<lb /><lb />Cyrus needs to take a lesson<lb />from other girls who have grown<lb />up in Hollywood and realize that<lb />by having such a public life, even<lb />if she tries to be the quintessen-<lb />tial angel, she will more than<lb />likely be made to look like noth-<lb />ing more than a sex symbol. |<lb /><lb />These female stars seem to<lb />learn nothing from past exam-<lb />ples; however, it is very possible<lb />for a person to be a celebrity and<lb />have a private life.<lb /><lb />Mandy Moore, who also<lb />grew up in Hollywood, has little<lb /><lb />-to no bad PR. Moore seems to<lb /><lb />keep her private information<lb /><lb />where it should be: private.<lb /><lb />Perhaps in order to be a posi-<lb />tive role model in Hollywood<lb />one must do everything she can<lb />to stay out of the spotlight, oth-<lb />erwise, as a young woman, you<lb />will become nothing more than<lb />the next good girl gone skank.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Nae<lb /><lb />DONT, TELL ME. But<lb />there she was at Cannes last month, doing the<lb />French poodle-and-pony show for a computer-<lb />ized cartoon film she wasnt even in. Except for<lb />her sultry voice.<lb /><lb />oIt is a real pleasure as a mom to be able to<lb />bring your kids to a film that you also really<lb />feel is a good film and goes back to the classic<lb />animated films,? she said, during the press blitz<lb />igniting the international launch of Kung Fu<lb />- Panda, the highly hyped DreamWorks feature,<lb />which cross-pollinates Bruce Lee with your<lb />Teddy bear.<lb /><lb />Kung Fu Panda is one of the last 2D films<lb /><lb />DreamWorks Animation reportedly plans .<lb /><lb />to make, but when Jolie said oclassic,? what<lb />did she mean? Two very different animated<lb />movies were capturing the imagination, or<lb />at least dominating discussions, along the<lb />Croissette last month: Panda, of course, and<lb />Waltz With Bashir, an Israeli-made, animated<lb />documentary about the massacre of Palestin-<lb />ians in 1982 Lebanon. While the latter may,<lb /><lb />ultimately, be deemed a classic over time, its<lb /><lb />not exactly what Jolie had in mind.<lb /><lb />No, oclassic? in the enchanted realm of<lb />big-budget, big-screen cartoon projects--which<lb />might include, perhaps, star Jack Black cavorting<lb />with dancing pandas on the French Riviera--is<lb />more about pushing the same audience buttons<lb /><lb />via the same emotional devices and structures.<lb /><lb />Like an audience at the now-104-year-old<lb />Peter Pan being asked to clap their hands and<lb />believe in fairies (oSave Tink!?), faith is always<lb />a major factor in the way the animated feature<lb />plays out on an impressionable audience. What<lb />changes is the ambience, the animal species<lb />of the characters and of course, the filmmak-<lb />ing technology. What seldom changes is the<lb />underdog status and the Joseph Campbell-esque<lb />heros journey.<lb /><lb />Take Po (voice of Black), the Ursa Major<lb /><lb />of the current movie season and the scion of a<lb /><lb />noodle-making clan in ancient China. His most<lb />distinguishing characteristic seems to be that<lb />he is the laziest bamboo-eater in Asia. So when<lb />greatness is thrust upon him in Kung Fu Panda,<lb />the outlook isnt good.<lb /><lb />Among recent releases, Barnyard--in which<lb /><lb />Otis, the chronically laid-back male cow (please -<lb />dont ask) inherits leadership of the farm--is-<lb />close to the template for Kung Fu Panda. But<lb /><lb />its hardly the only example: Ratatouille presents<lb />an unavoidable comparison with Panda (and a<lb />box-office take it would like to emulate). In it, a<lb />French rat aspires to be a French chef. In light<lb /><lb />of that, a panda throwing spinning back-kicks-<lb /><lb />seems relatively plausible. :<lb /><lb />Rooting for the impossible is a staple of ani-<lb />mated oclassics,? and with the exception of Bambis<lb />mother, setbacks are rare and unwelcome.<lb /><lb />But filmmakers have also taken the<lb /><lb />opposite tack--putting the privileged in the<lb /><lb />see PANDA page 8<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY, JUNE 11, 2008<lb /><lb />MCT<lb /><lb />Jack Black is the voice for Po, a lazy but lovable panda in the new film, Kung Fu Panda.<lb /><lb /></p>

Next, the team headed south to Santander, Spain<lb />to take on the oRed Fury? in their final tune up before<lb />Euro 2008.<lb /><lb />The Eagles capped off the stretch with a home match<lb />in New Jersey against FIFAs No. 1 ranked team in the<lb />world, Argentina. The Giants Stadiums crowd of over<lb />77,800, a record for a mens national team game in the<lb />US, saw goalie Tim Howard put on a clinic and powered<lb />the team to a well fought draw.<lb /><lb />When these matches were set earlier this year, the<lb />England match seemed to be the best chance for the<lb />MNT to get a result. England had been eliminated<lb />from the European championships, missing their<lb />first major international tournament since the 1994<lb />World Cup.<lb /><lb />The US came into the match riding high after a 3-0<lb />win against a tough Poland team, but learned on the eve<lb />of the match that they would be without the services of<lb />talismanic forward Landon Donovan, who was poised<lb />to earn his 100th cap, due to a groin injury.<lb /><lb />Liverpool superstar Steven Gerrard orchestrated<lb /><lb />thé English offense as he put David Beckham and Jer- |<lb /><lb />US soccer performance has<lb />mixed results on world stage<lb /><lb />Men play worlds top team to draw<lb /><lb />main Defoe through on goal only to see the chances<lb />wasted. It would be a recurring theme for Defoe as he<lb />frustratingly squandered chance after chance in Be<lb />of the goal all night long.<lb /><lb />Predictably so, England made~ the breakthrough<lb />in the 38th. minute through a Beckham free kick. He<lb />sent in the cross from the right flank and picked out<lb />the head of captain John Terry who sent it just past the<lb />outstretched hand of the diving Tim Howard.<lb /><lb />After halftime, the U.S. came out with a bit more<lb />attacking verve and Eddie Johnson came close when<lb /><lb />~he sent Heath Pearce a cross screaming past the post<lb /><lb />off his left foot. It would prove to be the best chance<lb />of the match for the US.<lb /><lb />However, Gerrard buried an insurance goal in the<lb />59th minute, exposing some dreadful positioning by<lb />the US backline and the game was all but over. The<lb />2-0 final doesnt truly express how easy the win was<lb /><lb />- for the English.<lb /><lb />The US faired much better a week later in Spain.<lb />Some line-up changes by coach Bob Bradley, most<lb />notably the insertion of teenage sensation Freddy Adu |<lb />into midfield, led to a more dangerous attack against<lb />Luis Aragoness side.<lb /><lb />Although Spain dominated possession in midfield,<lb />Adu was at the center of every dangerous US attack,<lb />which begs the question of why he is still not a con-<lb />sistent starter for the American side. Man<lb />of the match Howard made seven<lb />saves in the first half to keep the<lb />teams level as they went into the<lb />dressing rooms.<lb /><lb />On the American side, the<lb />return of Landon Donovan was<lb />felt as his marauding runs down<lb />the wings opened up chances for<lb />the US. Though he would see time<lb /><lb />. late in the match, one could only<lb /><lb />wonder what his pace might have<lb />brought had it been paired with the<lb />creativity of Adu.<lb /><lb />Regardless, after two controver-<lb />sial red cards, one for either team, the<lb />game ended in a 0-0 draw.<lb /><lb />It is hard to consider a three-<lb />game stretch that produced no<lb />wins and no goals as success, but<lb />with the improvement shown by the<lb />US over just a week and a half, it is<lb />hard to consider it a failure. <lb />WEDNESDAY, JUNE 11, 2008<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ SPORTS<lb /><lb />TRUE LIFE:<lb /><lb />o?m in Summer School?<lb /><lb />CONGRATULATIONS! You successfully made it through yet another academic year!<lb />Now what? Backpacking through Europe? A Carnival Cruise with family? Maybe<lb />visiting friends at other schools? Or maybe staying around Greenville to take a few<lb />summer classes? The Center for Counseling and Student Development would like to<lb />offer you some thoughts to consider as you juggle your continued responsibilities as a<lb />student while also trying to enjoy the summer months!<lb /><lb />PAGE 11<lb /><lb />WOODS Cee Le from page 9<lb /><lb />Staff Predictions _<lb /><lb />- Kellen 1 Hot z<lb /><lb />, : Staff ce a :<lb />Winner- Adam Scott<lb />Dark Horse Boo V We kley_<lb /><lb />The South Course at Torrey<lb />Pines isnt exactly a walk in a<lb />park either.<lb /><lb />Built in 1957, the South Course<lb />at Torrey Pines has always been<lb />among the nations hardest courses.<lb />This. year the course will play at<lb />7,643 yards which is 379 yards<lb />longer than the previous record<lb />holder of the U.S. Open.<lb /><lb />The chances of an under-<lb />par winning performance seem<lb />unlikely given the scenario of the<lb />course yardage and likely foggy<lb />conditions the players will face-<lb />-but while most previous U.S.<lb />Open courses play to a par of 70,<lb />the South Course at nO y Pines<lb />will play to 71.<lb /><lb />So who will the winner be on<lb />Sunday? Well, it will take a long<lb />hitter who has a solid combination<lb />of a short game and putting to<lb />match. Sound familiar?<lb /><lb />When it comes to majors, Tiger<lb />Woods is usually the answer to the<lb />question posed above, but Woods<lb />is battling back from knee surgery<lb />that took place about eight weeks<lb />ago after his runner-up finish<lb />at the Masters.<lb /><lb />In fact, Woods did not play his<lb />first full round since the surety<lb />until June 4th.<lb /><lb />According to Woods, he has<lb />trained hard during his eight-week<lb /><lb />_ layoff including taking full swings<lb /><lb />with every club in the bag.<lb />However, its worth mentioning<lb />that Woods won the Buick Invita-<lb />tional held at the Torrey Pines in<lb />January, albeit a otamer? course.<lb />oIf ~Tiger-isn't in theé.mix,<lb />then Phil Mickelson is the next<lb /><lb />_ big name to look to in terms of<lb /><lb />winning the U.S. Open. While<lb />oLefty? has never won the tour-<lb />nament, he owns four career<lb /><lb />runner -up finishes and knows<lb />Torrey Pines South Course<lb /><lb />. as well as anyone in the field.<lb /><lb />Couple that with his long driv-<lb />ing off the tee and brilliant short .<lb />game and Mickelson should be<lb />around to the very end.<lb /><lb />Adam Scott, a legitimate title<lb />contender, will be paired with<lb />Woods and Mickelson:in the<lb />first two rounds. The United<lb />States Golf Association [USGA] is<lb />trying something new by pairing<lb />the top 12 together in sets of three<lb />for the first two rounds.<lb /><lb />Of course, there are numerous<lb />golfers who could win the U.S. -<lb />Open and it is usually who you<lb />would least expect. The last five<lb />winners were Jim Furyk, Retief<lb />Goosen, Michael Campbell, Geoff<lb />Ogilvy and Angel Cabrera.<lb /><lb />Notice atrend? "<lb /><lb />Jim Furyk was the last Ameri-<lb />can to bring home what is consid-<lb />ered the U.S. national champion-<lb />ship. The four-year drought is the<lb />longest without a U.S.-born cham-<lb />pion since the first two decades of<lb />the tournament.<lb /><lb />While it speaks well globally<lb />for the game of golf, you can bet<lb />it doesnt sit well with American.<lb />golfers who want the oU.S.? 'to<lb />return to the U.S. Open..<lb /><lb />With such a great field at the<lb />108th U.S. Open, its more or less<lb />of a coin flip as to who will win but<lb />if the drama on Sunday plays out ~<lb />like it usually does, golf fanatics<lb />are in for a treat.<lb /><lb />With the tournament being<lb />broadcast in the oprime-time? hours<lb />for most of the country, this could end<lb />up being a tournament to remember.<lb /><lb />This writer .can be contacted at<lb />' sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb /></p>
