          <lb />Opinion |<lb /><lb />911: used and abused<lb /><lb />Or call someone who<lb />cares<lb /><lb />J.D. LEWIS<lb />OPINION EDITOR<lb /><lb />Before leaving the workforce<lb />and returning to college full-time,<lb />I spent eight years as a 911 opera-<lb />tor. A local newspaper reporter<lb />and I were once going to team up<lb />and write an exposé of the public<lb />abuse of the 911 system, but my<lb />then-supervisor quickly dismissed<lb />the idea because, in his view, abuse<lb />isn't that big of a problem.?<lb /><lb />That is easy to say when youre not<lb />the one sitting in the communications<lb />center for 12 hours dealing with it.<lb /><lb />Out of compassion for dispatch-<lb />ers everywhere, it is time to say some<lb />things that have long needed to be<lb />said. 911 is for emergencies only.<lb /><lb />It is not to find out if your favor-<lb />ite officer is on duty; to inquire if<lb />some useless relative is in jail; if<lb />the police have a warrant for your<lb />arrest or to report power outages.<lb />Yes, these are all inconveniences,<lb />but hardly emergencies.<lb /><lb />Do not call 911 to ask for the<lb />number to the jail or anywhere<lb />else. It is not 411. The nine and<lb />the four are diagonal from each<lb />other on totally opposite sides of<lb />the keypad. No matter how hard<lb />you try, you are not going to hit<lb />the nine by mistake when going<lb />for the four.<lb /><lb />A frequent response to 911? is<lb />Ive got the wrong number.? No,<lb />911 is only three numbers, and for<lb />a wrong number you need at least<lb />four more.<lb /><lb />As equally unfathomable as the<lb />whole wrong number bit, is the<lb />outright denial. ,<lb /><lb />I didnt call 911.?<lb /><lb />You obviously did, or I wouldn't<lb />have answered and said 911.?<lb /><lb />This ain't really an emer-<lb />gency...? is another oft-quoted<lb />comeback. You don't really need<lb />to call 911 then, do you? ...But I<lb />didnt know who else to call.?<lb /><lb />Dispatchers are not God, Dr. Phil<lb />or Abigail Van Buren. If anything<lb />other than a crime, fire or serious<lb />medical problem is on your mind,<lb />then 911 is not the number for you.<lb /><lb />This ain't really an emer-<lb />gency...? is often followed by but<lb />I tried to call the other number (the<lb />non-emergency line), and didnt<lb />nobody answer.?<lb /><lb />Well, didnt nobody? call because<lb />I was sitting right there the whole<lb />time, and the phone never rang, so<lb />you obviously didnt try too hard. To<lb />the dispatcher, this is just another way<lb />of saying Im too lazy to look the<lb />number up in the phone book.? |<lb /><lb />Also, when calling 911, the first<lb />thing out of your mouth should<lb /><lb />never be How are you doing??<lb /><lb />If you are calling 911, yours or<lb /><lb />someone elses life and/or prop-<lb /><lb />erty should be in grave danger; a<lb />roaring blaze should be consuming<lb />everything in sight; or you or some-<lb />one else should be in agonizing<lb />pain and/or close to death. In any<lb />case, the welfare of the dispatcher<lb />is not germane to the situation, nor<lb />should you care who answers so<lb />long as someone does.<lb /><lb />Whos speaking?? is another<lb /><lb />frequent response to 911.? Tell me<lb />what that has to do with anything?<lb />If straits are so dire that I need to<lb />call 911, I really dont care to whom<lb />I am speaking as long as they send<lb />me some help.<lb /><lb />More than once a shift, a dis- |<lb /><lb />patcher is treated to Can I ask<lb />you a question?? You just did.<lb />Another response is, This might<lb /><lb />be a stupid question...? If you feel "<lb /><lb />compelled to say that, then it most<lb />likely is. Someone may be trying<lb />to call the police while hiding in<lb />their closet from an axe murderer,<lb />and youre tying up the 911 line<lb />with a question you know is stupid<lb />to begin with.<lb /><lb />The 911 number, being for<lb />emergencies only, is apparently a<lb />mind-boggling concept.<lb /><lb />Webster defines an emergency<lb />as an unforeseen combination<lb />of circumstances or the result-<lb />ing state that calls for immediate<lb />action? and an urgent need for<lb />assistance or relief.?<lb /><lb />Per Webster, none of the afore-<lb />mentioned constitutes an emer-<lb />gency. Other occurrences such as<lb />reporting larceny days after the<lb />fact, and car accidents from two<lb />weeks ago (because your insurance<lb />company wants a report), are not<lb />emergencies either.<lb /><lb />Finally, though I could write an<lb />entire book on this subject, the most<lb />annoying fingernails-on-the-black-<lb />board response to 911? for a dis-<lb />patcher is, I hate to bother you...?<lb /><lb />Then dont.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />{ www.theeastcarolinian.com }<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY MAY 28, 2008<lb /><lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />PAGE 4<lb /><lb />Does anyone else find it strange that my<lb />roommate stays up until 5 a.m. on Adderall<lb /><lb />watching animal porn?<lb /><lb />"iy, ig Ca el ey<lb /><lb />SEES<lb /><lb />ety<lb /><lb />ee:<lb /><lb />\:} gear oees<lb />a<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate<lb />Rants. <lb />PAGE 10<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ SPORTS<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY, MAY 28, 2008.<lb /><lb />ROAD continued from page 9<lb /><lb />ECU is gearing up for its 23rd NCAA Regional<lb />appearance and ninth in the last 10 years.<lb /><lb />of nine SEC teams to make the NCAA field and also finished<lb />second in the SECs Western Division. Columbia received an<lb />automatic bid after claiming the Ivy League championship.<lb /><lb />ECU is looking to bounce back from a mediocre per-<lb />formance in the C-USA tournament in New Orleans.<lb /><lb />The No. 5 seed Pirates were sent into the losers<lb />bracket on the first day with a heartbreaking loss to<lb />No. 4 Houston.<lb /><lb />Brandon Henderson smacked a double off the left<lb />field wall in the tenth inning, scoring Corey Kemp<lb />from first base and giving ECU a 4-3 lead.<lb /><lb />Houstons Zak Presley answered with a bases loaded<lb />single to give the Cougars a 5-4 extra innings win.<lb /><lb />We have to relax and leave the game to us and<lb /><lb />focus on what we do,? Godwin said. The effort was<lb /><lb />there [against Houston], we were just trying to make<lb />~ too much happen.?<lb />ECU didnt stay down long--the Pirates responded<lb /><lb />nationally ranked Rice.<lb /><lb />Senior T.J. Hose threw 4.1 innings of hitless base-<lb />ball in a winning relief appearance. Kemp and Roller<lb />each blasted solo home runs and Harrison Eldridge<lb /><lb />3 notched the game-winning single.<lb /><lb />Photo by Jessi Braxton<lb /><lb />ECU was eliminated after another close loss to<lb />Houston. The Pirates took an early 1-0 lead but gave<lb />up two runs in the sixth, giving the Cougars all they<lb />would need to preserve a victory.<lb /><lb />I still dont think we've played a series yet where<lb />we've played complete,? Godwin said. That's kind of<lb />scary because I think thats certainly possible for this club<lb />to do and I believe they believe its going to happen.?<lb /><lb />C-USA Freshman of the Year Seth Maness will take<lb />the mound for the Pirates in the opener against Alabama.<lb /><lb />Maness finished the regular season with a 9-1 record<lb />and a 2.79 ERA, being the third lowest in the league. ~The<lb />young right-hander finished with a team-best 75 strike-<lb />outs and walked only 17 batters in 84 innings pitched.<lb /><lb />-Maness is confident he can make the transition to<lb />playing on a bigger stage.<lb /><lb />Just go out there and try to do everything that Ive been<lb />doing all year,? said Maness. Throw strikes, let the defense<lb />play behind me, and let the offense do what they do.?<lb /><lb />Kemp makes no bones about the teams expecta-<lb />tions heading into NCAA play.<lb /><lb />He believes that ECU could be in the College |<lb /><lb />World Series as early as this year.<lb /><lb />Each year the goal is not to make it to the regional<lb />or the super regional, its to make it to Omaha,? Kemp<lb />said. We put forth a tremendous effort this year. If<lb />we play well and get hot at the right time, the sky is<lb />the limit--and thats Omaha.?<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Coastal Carolina (47-12)<lb /><lb />¢ Location: Conway, SC<lb />e Nickname: Chanticleers<lb /><lb />" © Enrollment: 8,300<lb /><lb />~ @ Conference: Big South<lb /><lb />_@ NCAA tournament appearances: /<lb /><lb />" @ VS ECU: 6-5 . |<lb /><lb />_ © Key Players: C Dock Doyle (.365,16 HR, 65 RBI), OF David Sappelt<lb />(344,16 HR,61 RBI), RHP Joey Haug (7-0, 2.09 ERA)<lb /><lb />Alabama (34-26)<lb /><lb />_ e Location: Tuscaloosa, AL<lb /><lb />_ © Nickname: Crimson Tide<lb /><lb />" © Enrollment: 25,580<lb /><lb />_ © Conference: SEC ,<lb />© NCAA tournament appearances: 18 (6 regional championships, 5 CWS -<lb />appearances) :<lb />_ @ VS ECU: Never faced<lb />_ © Key Players: C Alex Avila (.339, 16 HR, 61 RBI), IF Brandon May (.377, ©<lb />~ QOHR. 49 RBI), RHP Austin Hyatt (4-4, 4.64 ERA) :<lb /><lb />Columbia (22-28)<lb /><lb />© Location: New York, NY<lb />" @ Nickname: Lions<lb /><lb />e Enrollment: 24,820<lb /><lb />e Conference: Ivy League<lb /><lb />e NCAA tournament appearances: |<lb />e VS ECU: Never faced<lb /><lb />_ © Key Players: 2B/RHP Henry Perkins (.371, 3 HR, 34 RBI), IF Mike Roberts |<lb /><lb />et 2710 HR, 3/ ae RHP Geoff Whitaker (6- a) 7.26 ERA)<lb /><lb />with a surprising 4-3 victory over top-seeded, No. 5<lb /><lb /></p>

          <lb />WEDNESDAY, MAY 28,<lb /><lb />2008<lb /><lb />NFL continued from page 9<lb /><lb />than the 60% of total revenue<lb />that is currently central to the rift<lb />with owners in an uncapped year.<lb />Upshaw, however, is advising play-<lb />ers to sign long-term deals if the<lb />numbers are right.<lb /><lb />The last uncapped year for the<lb />NFL came in 1993 and Upshaw<lb />has called the 2010 uncapped<lb />season a point of no return in<lb />saying that players would not<lb />settle for a salary cap again.<lb /><lb />NFL commissioner Roger<lb />Goodell disagrees and has stated<lb />since the owners opted out last<lb /><lb />Tuesday that players would agree "<lb /><lb />to a salary cap.<lb />So what brought about this<lb />possible doomsday scenario for<lb /><lb />the NFL last Tuesday? Accord-<lb /><lb />ing to Upshaw, an e-mail from<lb />Goodell named three key reasons<lb />for the owners opting out. Those<lb />reasons were high labor costs,<lb />problems with rookie contracts,<lb />and the league's inability to recoup<lb />bonuses of players who do not<lb />abide by their contract.<lb /><lb />The current deal, signed two<lb />years ago, was to remain in effect<lb />until 2013 but had an option to opt<lb />out in 2011, which is exactly what<lb />happened last week.<lb /><lb />Now the sights are turned<lb />to when a possible deal might<lb /><lb />be struck between the sides, but<lb />according to both sides that might<lb />take many years.<lb /><lb />We'd like to get things done,?<lb />Goodell] said last week in an ESPN<lb />interview. But often its not until<lb />you have a deadline that people<lb />realize the consequences of not<lb />reaching a deal,<lb /><lb />March of 2010--thats what we<lb /><lb />see as the realistic deadline, Upshaw.<lb /><lb />said, according to ESPN. Im not<lb />going to sell the players on a cap<lb />again. Once we go through the cap,<lb />why should we agree to it again??<lb />As the months tick away with-<lb /><lb />out an agreement, the possibility<lb /><lb />of an uncapped season becomes a<lb />high likelihood.<lb />While the NFL is worried<lb /><lb />about an uncapped season, a more<lb /><lb />troublesome possibility remains<lb />on the horizon. The possibility of<lb />a lockout in 2011 is looming, which<lb />means no football will be played.<lb />We have guaranteed three<lb />more years of NFL football,?<lb />Goodell said last Tuesday. We<lb />are not in dire straits. But the<lb />agreement isnt working, and we're<lb />looking to get a more fair and<lb />equitable deal.? .<lb /><lb />The writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Mark A.War<lb /><lb />AT To Ne Y<lb />Board Certified Specialist in State Criminal Law<lb /><lb />e ~lraffic Offenses<lb /><lb />e Drug Offenses<lb /><lb />e DWI :<lb />e State &amp; Federal Courts<lb /><lb />252.752 Vick our website at www.mark-ward.com<lb /><lb />AT L A WwW<lb /><lb />MasterCard<lb /><lb />eed<lb />VISA<lb /><lb />¢<lb /><lb />SONVITHG - TIND - Wy ST¥OdS<lb /><lb />13 E STH STREET<lb />252-551-9020<lb /><lb />ECUSID<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ SPORTS<lb /><lb />PAGE 11<lb /><lb />KEMP continued from PaEE 9<lb /><lb />Kemp expects the Pirates to be serious contenders to reach Omaha.<lb /><lb />winning home run against<lb />Western Carolina. .<lb /><lb />Last year I had a disappoint-<lb />ing season, said Kemp. I was<lb />a little embarrassed. This year<lb />I really wanted to show what<lb />kind of player I was. Last year, I<lb />knew I was a better player than I<lb />showed...so, I took the summer off<lb />from baseball and just worked on<lb />strength and conditioning, tried to<lb />fine-tune some points of my game.<lb />I worked with my coaches day in<lb />and day out and that really made a<lb />difference for me.?<lb /><lb />Pirate baseball fans really<lb />began to take note of those dif-<lb />ferences in a March matchup<lb />with Houston. Kemp exploded for<lb />three home runs (3-4) in a 15-4<lb />assault on the Cougars. Kemp<lb />went on to finish the season with<lb />20 multi-hit games, 17 multi-RBI<lb /><lb />games, and 11 game-winning RBI<lb />including a walk-off bomb against<lb />Marshall in April.<lb /><lb />At the beginning of the season,<lb />Kemp was named one of three<lb />captains on the team along with<lb />T.J. Hose and Drew Schieber.<lb />His leadership is valuable in the<lb />catcher position, especially with<lb />so many inexperienced pitchers to<lb />keep 1 in ine=-"<lb /><lb />Corey catching behind the<lb />plate--you couldnt ask for any-<lb />thing more back there,? said C-<lb />USA Freshman of the Year Seth<lb />Maness. He just does a great job<lb />keeping you relaxed. [Its] really<lb />all I need.?<lb /><lb />Kemp stayed close to home<lb />after high school, opting to play for<lb />Tennessee Tech. After a one-year<lb />stint at Tech, Corey moved on to<lb />Young Harris, a junior college. A<lb /><lb />visit to ECU with outfielder Trent<lb />Ashcraft, a Young Harris team-<lb />mate at the time, prompted Kemp<lb />to finish his career as a Pirate.<lb /><lb />IT came toa football game and<lb />fell in love with the fans: the whole<lb />atmosphere that ECU brings, the<lb />tradition, the pride that everybody<lb />takes in being a Pirate,? Kemp<lb />said of ECUs lure. I met fans at a<lb />football game that had just bought<lb />their season tickets for baseball,<lb />so that really opened up my eyes<lb />to what kind of tradition and what<lb />kind of excitement people around<lb />here have for ECU athletics and the<lb />school in general.?<lb /><lb />Kemps newfound success<lb />means new attention from Major<lb />League Baseball scouts. Its no<lb />secret that he will be drafted; the<lb />only questions are when and where.<lb />With MLB waiting to snatch hun-<lb />dreds of young players as soon as<lb />the college baseball season ends,<lb />focusing on the task at hand can<lb />become problematic.<lb /><lb />You try to focus on the season<lb /><lb />but I'd lie if I said I didnt think-<lb /><lb />about it [the draft],? Kemp said.<lb />There's a good chance I'll hear<lb />my name called but you try to put<lb />it in the back of your mind and just<lb />focus on the season and deal with<lb />that when the season is over.?<lb /><lb />Looking at the improvement<lb />he has made throughout his career,<lb />Kemp looks like he has the skills<lb />and the work ethic necessary to<lb />succeed on the next level.<lb /><lb />In the meantime, Kemp is busy<lb />leading the Pirates to the NCAA<lb />Regional. Expectations for the<lb />team range in the Pirate Nation.<lb /><lb />With ECU playing as a No. 2<lb />seed, many fans would be happy<lb />with a trip to the Super Regional;<lb />however, there is-only one<lb />destination to meet Kemps expec-<lb />tations: Omaha.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />DAILY FOOD SPECIALS<lb /><lb />Mon - BBO Sandwich, Fries &amp; Drink<lb />~Tues - 10 Wings - Traditional or Boneless<lb /><lb />Wed -<lb />Thurs<lb /><lb />1/2ib Burger,<lb />- Any Chic<lb /><lb />Fries &amp; Drink<lb />s-ken Sand, Fries &amp; Drink<lb /><lb />Fri - Fish Sandwich, Fries &amp; Drink<lb /><lb />Sat - 1/2 Price Arrr-petizers<lb /><lb />sun - Buy One, Get One 1/2 Off.<lb /><lb /></p>
