          <lb />WEDNESDAY, MAY 21, 2008<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ NEWS<lb /><lb />PAGE 3<lb /><lb />IMMIGRATION continued from page 2<lb /><lb />for a number of reasons. The most<lb />obvious one? Cheap labor.<lb /><lb />Jeff Popke,- associate professor<lb />in the Department of Geography at<lb />East Carolina University, says that<lb />most immigrants here illegally end<lb />up working in low-paying Jobs.<lb /><lb />_ Many immigrants do end up<lb /><lb />in relatively low-wage sectors of<lb />the economy, such as agriculture,<lb />construction, agro-processing and<lb />the service sector,? he said. At the<lb />same time, maquiladora factories<lb />have proliferated, so that Ameri-<lb />can companies [and our standard<lb />of living] can benefit from cheap<lb />Mexican labor.?<lb /><lb />Maquiladora factories are those<lb />(mostly along the U.S.-Mexican<lb />border) that are U.S.-owned, but<lb />employ Mexicans cheaply to resell<lb />goods (like clothing) in the U.S. The<lb />construction and hospitality indus-<lb />tries also help illegal immigrants to<lb />assimilate themselves into American<lb />life more easily because little com-<lb />munication is required for the jobs,<lb />which is a plus for those immigrants<lb />who don't speak English.<lb /><lb />In these two areas, there<lb />is little barrier of communica-<lb />tion because simple words or<lb />phrases help them get the job,?<lb />said David Rivera, assistant pro-<lb />fessor for ECUTs Department of<lb /><lb />Erin<lb /><lb />Major at ECU:<lb />Nursing<lb />Occupation:<lb />Student<lb /><lb />Why I donate:<lb />Extra spending<lb />cash<lb /><lb />Hospitality Management.<lb />Popke says that there are a<lb /><lb />variety of explanations why North |<lb /><lb />Carolina has become a haven for<lb />illegal immigrants.<lb /><lb />They are coming to North<lb />Carolina and many other South-<lb />ern states for a number of reasons.<lb />There is a long history of migrant<lb />labor in certain industries [such<lb />as tobacco]. We have a relatively<lb />strong economy, there are jobs<lb />available [and] compared to tra-<lb />ditional destination states in the<lb />Southwest, North Carolina has a<lb />lower cost of living and less of an<lb />~anti-immigrantT climate,? he said.<lb /><lb />At the same time, with the<lb />growing numbers of mostly His-<lb />panic illegal immigrants in the<lb />state some feel that these immi-<lb />grants do not boost the economy.<lb /><lb />Sue Myrick, a representative of<lb />North CarolinaTs ninth-district, said<lb />in a 2006 report that the U.S. govern-<lb />ment should send illegal immigrants<lb />back to their home country.<lb /><lb />Call me old-fashioned, but ....<lb /><lb />I believe in our laws. I believe we<lb />should seal off our borders and<lb />enforce our immigration laws. Our<lb />economy would not be damaged<lb />by sending illegal aliens home,?<lb />she said. Illegal aliens are here<lb />illegally, and we must recommit<lb /><lb />~ourselves to enforcing our laws and<lb />securing our borders.?<lb /><lb />Laws in North Carolina are<lb />clear, but many businesses hiring<lb />illegal aliens bend the rules? or<lb />choose to ignore the laws alto-<lb />gether. Section 274A of the Immi-<lb />gration and Nationality Act forbids<lb />businesses from knowingly hiring<lb />illegal immigrants, but-according<lb />to a 2006 article by the News &amp;<lb />Observer, not a single business in<lb />NC has been fined since 1999 for<lb />hiring illegal immigrants. The<lb />current fine for businesses that<lb />knowingly hire illegal aliens is<lb />$250 per immigrant.<lb /><lb />Wanda Yuhas, executive direc-<lb />tor for the Job Development Com-<lb />mission in Pitt County, says that<lb />all companies in North Carolina<lb />are supposed to verify I-9 (to verify<lb />citizenship status) forms for each of<lb />their employees, but that doesnTt<lb />always happen.<lb /><lb />AS we approach our growing,<lb />and in turn, harvest seasons, more<lb />migrant labor will surely be in<lb />evidence,? she said.<lb /><lb />Besides businesses, illegal<lb />immigrants shape North Carolina<lb />school systems. According to<lb />figures by the Kenan Institute of<lb />Private Enterprise in a 2006 by the<lb />News &amp; Observer, the state spends<lb /><lb />Donate Plasma<lb /><lb />and earn up to $170/mo<lb /><lb />Last month, we paid out $33,035 to 734<lb /><lb />good people.<lb /><lb />DCI Biologicals is always paying out this<lb />kind of cash. What percentage of<lb />that enrollment is legal or illegal??<lb />she asked. As a parent, Id risk<lb />a lot in order to get my children<lb />into U.S. schools and health sys-<lb /><lb />tems and out of the poverty of the<lb /><lb />Mexican countryside.?<lb /><lb />According to the same News &amp;<lb />Observer article, Hispanics accounted<lb />for 57 percent of the enrollment<lb />growth in North CarolinaTs public<lb />schools from 2000 to 2005.<lb /><lb />In Pitt County alone, Hispanics<lb />rank No. 3 in enrollment among<lb />public school students, next only to<lb />black and white students, according<lb />to the Pitt County public school<lb />system's Web site.<lb /><lb />Our responsibility is to serve<lb />all students as best we can with ESL<lb />(English as a Second Language)<lb />services. When students come from<lb />another country, it takes some time<lb />for them to get adjusted in school<lb /><lb />and feel comfortable with their peers<lb />because the language limits the<lb />conversation,T said Sylvia Mizzelle,<lb />director of federal programs for Pitt<lb />County schools. We probably do<lb />have undocumented students, but by<lb />law we cannot ask for that informa-<lb />tion.? Schools and businesses are not<lb />the only sectors that are affected by<lb />illegal immigrants. Health care sys-<lb />tems also bear the brunt of the influx<lb />of illegal immigrants in North Caro-<lb />lina, although it is hard to estimate<lb />the costs of their care. The main<lb />reason: hospitals are not required<lb />to ask about citizenship status when<lb />patients come in for care.<lb /><lb />Hospitals are not the place to<lb />figure out citizenship issues. We<lb />are required as health care profes-<lb />sionals to give the highest quality<lb />of care to our patients, not figure<lb />out whether they are legal citizens<lb />or not,? said Tamara Williams,<lb />director of diversity and language<lb />services for Pitt CountyTs Uni-<lb />versity Health Systems. I think<lb />the responsibility of hospitals and<lb />health care systems is to give qual- ~<lb />ity care to patients, regardless of<lb />their citizenship status.?<lb /><lb />However, according to a 2004<lb />report by the Kenan Institute of<lb /><lb />see IMMIGRATION page 4<lb /><lb /></p>

According to a 2006 article<lb />by the News &amp; Observer, illegal<lb />immigrants likely make up one-<lb />third of the 1.3 million uninsured<lb />North Carolinians. Federal law<lb />states that illegal immigrants can<lb />receive Medicaid, the national medi-<lb />cal fund for low-income Americans,<lb />if their condition is severe enough,<lb />accounting for $52.8 million spent<lb />in 2005. However, this figure makes<lb />up less than 1 percent of the fundTs<lb />annual budget. For illegal immi-<lb />grants who give birth in hospitals<lb />in North Carolina, Medicaid pays<lb />approximately $7,000 for normal<lb />births and $18,000 for complicated<lb />caesarean section births for each<lb />patient, one insurer told the News<lb />&amp; Observer in 2006.<lb /><lb />Half the babies born here<lb />at Duplin General Hospital are<lb />Latino,? said Laura Maready, direc-<lb />tor of marketing at the Kenansville,<lb />N.C.-based hospital.<lb /><lb />According to Maready, from<lb />October 2006 to September 2007,<lb />394 of the 776 total births were<lb />Hispanic children.<lb /><lb />As you can see, thatTs a pretty<lb /><lb />IMMIGRATION continued from page 3<lb /><lb />large number,? <p>Opinion<lb /><lb />Onbdihio he<lb /><lb />Sometimes it is about you<lb /><lb />ANDREA ROBERTSON<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />Most of us have been told at least once that life is short and we need<lb />to learn to enjoy it. With that being the case, why do so many of us find<lb />ourselves living our lives to make others happy?<lb /><lb />It seems to me that too many of us spend the majority of our lives trying<lb />to please others. From day one, we search for praise and approval in the eyes<lb />of others. We begin school with our parentsT hopes of us doing well, which<lb />we then adopt as our own hopes. As we grow older, our parents may try to<lb />get us into sports or create some incredible dream of becoming doctors, and<lb />eventually we think that those dreams have always been our own.<lb /><lb />Not only do we suffer from the expectations of our parents, but upon enter-<lb />ing school and other social circles, we are forced to enter the realm of what<lb />our friends expect from us. Our friends tell us how to dress, how to act and<lb />who to date. Many of us are fearful of losing our friends if we date a loser?<lb />or if we want to be friends with someone who does not fit in with our clique.<lb />As we do with our parentsT expectations, we adopt those expectations, and<lb />we use them to make sure our other friends stay in line. ,<lb /><lb />It takes years before we figure out that the expectations we thought<lb />were our own probably spawned from the expectations of others. Usu-<lb />ally one finds him or herself wrapped in a world of dissatisfaction in the<lb />middle of their adult life, wondering where they went wrong. Why is this<lb />career so unfulfilling? Why am I so concerned with making other people<lb />happy? Where is my happiness? i<lb /><lb />Unfortunately, at this stage in our lives, many of us have yet to realize<lb />that we are being too concerned with the happiness and expectations of<lb />others. We are completely forgetting about what we want for ourselves.<lb />Ask yourself, If I continue to live my life this way, where do I see myself<lb />in ten years?? More importantly, Do I like the person I am seeing??<lb /><lb />We need to stop trying to live up to what others expect of us and take<lb />our lives into our own hands. If someone is going to reject you for want-<lb /><lb />ing to be happy, doesnTt that mean that they s weren't-too concerned about<lb />you from the beginning?<lb /><lb />A parentTs love should be unconditional. They should love you no<lb />matter what you do and only hope that you will find happiness. A true<lb />friend will love you unconditionally also.<lb /><lb />Our lives are way too short to wake up ten years from now and realize<lb />that we have done nothing for ourselves. In order to find true happiness,<lb />we must consider our own feelings; we must live our own lives. No one can<lb />control you, unless you allow it, just as you cannot control anyone else. Find<lb /><lb />happiness in yourself; donTt search for happiness in the approval of others<lb />'... especially if their approval is won by abiding in their expectations.<lb /><lb />This writer-can be contacted at opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />{ www.theeastcarolinian.com }<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY way 21.2008 PAGE 5.<lb /><lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />My little sister just got a Blackberry and I'm still<lb />rocking the ee Zach had on Saved by the Bell.<lb /><lb />A new year, a fresh start<lb /><lb />| ELISE PHILLIPS<lb />EDITOR IN CHIEF<lb /><lb />After attending this yearTs graduation ceremony, I<lb />realized how many truly innovative leaders that ECU<lb />produces. From our first graduating engineering<lb />classes to a whole new flock of nurses entering the<lb />medical field, Pirate leaders are one of a kind.<lb /><lb />A professor once told me that no remarkable people<lb />leave ECU and enter the work force. I dare to disagree<lb />with that person. ECU prides itself on leaders taking<lb /><lb />their place on campus, in the community, in the nation<lb /><lb />and in the world.<lb /><lb />For example, two new graduates from one of ECUTs<lb />medical programs are leaving for Honduras at the<lb />end of this month to pursue health care in one of the<lb />worldTs poorest countries. Several ECU students are<lb />taking their studies elsewhere this summer to travel<lb />the world and study abroad. ECU students have taken<lb /><lb />the lead this election year by volunteering their time.<lb /><lb />and money to spread the word about their passion for<lb />political change. ECU students are receiving awards<lb />and landing jobs everyday because of the preparation<lb /><lb />and encouragement that is bestowed upon them from .<lb />the university that has been called by some as the<lb />leadership institute of the world.?<lb /><lb />This week, many new leaders will take their place<lb />in various organizations across campus, including<lb />student media. This paper marks the first issue of<lb />the summer with me as its leader. I take this position<lb />seriously, and I hope that others will find their niche<lb />as a leader at ECU.<lb /><lb />I've heard my whole life that there are three kinds<lb />of people in the world: those that lead, those that<lb />follow and those that criticize. This yearTs<lb />final matches two of the worldTs most powerful clubs<lb />together: Manchester United and Chelsea (London).<lb />This will be the first-ever meeting of two English<lb />teams in the European final, making this Moscow,<lb />Russia-hosted event a unique one. |<lb /><lb />On May 28th, The United States MenTs National<lb />Team will square off against England at storied Wem-<lb />bley Stadium in London. To England, it is just another<lb />friendly game but this is one of the most important<lb />games of the year to fans that follow U.S. Soccer.<lb /><lb />As for the Champions League final, Manchester<lb />United will be aiming for its third European title<lb />and its first since 1999 when David Beckham starred<lb />for the Red Devils. Stateside, United is often con-<lb />sidered the New York Yankees? of English football,<lb />having secured 17 English Premier League (EPL)<lb />titles since 1908.<lb /><lb />If United are the New York Yankees, then<lb />consider 23 year-old Cristiano Ronaldo to be<lb />Alex Rodriguez. . ?<lb /><lb />Ronaldo, a native of Portugal, is now widely<lb />considered the best soccer player in the world. The<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />PAGE 12<lb /><lb />All soccer eyes on England for month of May<lb /><lb />wingerTs 31 goals this season easily topped the EPL.<lb />_ Forward Wayne Rooney, only 22, joins Ronaldo<lb />in the United attack and has already proved himself<lb />as an accomplished goal-scorer in the English game.<lb />Argentine sensation Carlos Tevez completes the<lb />three-headed monster that is the Red Devil attack.<lb />The three combined for 57 goals in the EPL this<lb />season and have tallied 15 goals so far in the Cham-<lb />pions League. 7<lb /><lb />The youth up front is balanced by an experienced<lb />midfield featuring two United living legends: Ryan<lb />Giggs and Paul Scholes. Scholes scored the game-<lb />winner in the semi-finals against Barcelona to lift<lb /><lb />United to victory.<lb /><lb />Chelsea has three English titles to its name and<lb />claimed two in back-to-back seasons in 2004-2005<lb />and 2005-2006. 3<lb /><lb />Chelsea does not quite possess the same mystique<lb />as United, but have earned a reputation as a more than<lb />formidable opponent in recent years.<lb /><lb />The Blues have stars of their own, led by midfield-<lb />ers Frank Lampard and Michael Ballack. Lampard<lb />led Chelsea in goals during the regular season but<lb />Ivorian forward Didier Drogba has six Champions<lb />League goals thus far. Drogba, however, is listed as<lb />questionable for the match due to injury.<lb /><lb />Chelsea knocked off fellow Londoners, Arsenal in<lb />its semi-final matchup.<lb /><lb />The two teamsT recent history is making the<lb />grand stage even more compelling. The New<lb />York Yankees comparison fits even<lb /><lb />better in this regard than on the.<lb /><lb />playing field.<lb /><lb />Like the Yankees, Manchester<lb />United and Chelsea spend their<lb />way to championships. In American<lb /><lb />~sports, it isnTt uncommon for low-<lb /><lb />payroll teams to win champion-<lb />ships (a la the Florida Marlins circa<lb />1997, 2003).<lb /><lb />No such parody exists in<lb />English football; the most pres-<lb />tigious teams will win nearly<lb />every season. :<lb /><lb />Americans may be familiar<lb />with the ownership on Manchester<lb />UnitedTs side. American Malcolm<lb />Glazer, owner of the Tampa Bay<lb />Buccaneers, took over controlling<lb />interest in 2005. GlazerTs team has<lb />been successful on the pitch, but<lb />financial woes have supporters<lb />calling for a takeover.<lb /><lb />Russian billionaire, Roman<lb />Abramovich, guides Chelsea.<lb />When Abramovich sees a player<lb />he wants, he gets him. Money<lb />is no. object in west London. It<lb />is no coincidence than in 2005,<lb />Abramovich brought Chelsea its<lb /><lb />first domestic title since 1955.<lb /><lb />After dueling it out on the field<lb />in Moscow, a number of United<lb /><lb />and Chelsea players will set their.<lb /><lb />differences aside and suit up for<lb />England in a friendly against the<lb />United States. The U.S. MNT is<lb /><lb />entering a brutal stretch of games<lb />to prepare for World Cup qualify-<lb /><lb />ing this summer. The other two<lb />dates include matches with Spain<lb />and the worldTs number one ranked<lb />team, Argentina.<lb /><lb />The Americans have yet to<lb />prove themselves on this level,<lb />so the games should serve as<lb />a measuring stick for just how<lb />much progress has. been made<lb />since a disappointing finish in<lb /><lb />the 2006 World Cup.<lb /><lb />The U.S. MNT has not defeated<lb />England since 1993 while the only<lb />other victory came in 1950. The<lb />Yanks have never beaten the Brits<lb /><lb />on English soil.<lb /><lb />Next WednesdayTs ESPN<lb />Classic broadcast will hype up<lb />the David Beckham factor:?<lb />American pundits are likely to<lb />build this match as David Beck-<lb />ham and his old country? versus<lb />his new country.?<lb /><lb />Watching Beckham and his<lb />L.A.
