<lb />fea<lb /><lb />=<lb /><lb />THURSDAY APRIL 24, 2008<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />PAG AS<lb /><lb />First annual ECU Rotaract Etiquette dinner held<lb /><lb />Networking opportunities available to<lb />attendees<lb /><lb />NESREN ELHERTANI<lb /><lb />STAFF WRITER<lb />The first Rotaract Etiquette dinner, which in-<lb />cluded a gourmet, three-course meal, was held at<lb />Ironwood Country Club on Thursday, April 18.<lb />This particular spot was chosen because it<lb />provided an immaculate venue and made the<lb />event more significant as it was unique, said<lb /><lb />~James Wagner, Rotaract Club president.<lb /><lb />The purpose of the dinner was to provide<lb />an opportunity for ECU students to network<lb />and interact with area businesses and commu-<lb />nity leaders in a social, dinner setting.<lb /><lb />The Rotaract Club felt it was important for<lb />students to learn these abilities as job competi-<lb />tion increases; it would give an advantage over<lb />someone who has not experienced competition<lb />at all. |<lb /><lb />This is a really great help to all of us who<lb />are not good with the whole business dinner<lb />etiquette thing,? said Anna Mitchell, graduate<lb />student.<lb /><lb />Community and business leaders in Pitt<lb />County, as well as ECU administration, at-<lb />tended in order to provide ene oppor-<lb />tunities for the event.<lb /><lb />Guests were asked to wear mugineds casual<lb />or business professional clothing.<lb /><lb />In order to make the first year of this event<lb />worthy and to set the precedent, the club hired<lb />the only certified etiquette and professional<lb />trainer in Pitt County, Su-Su Corbitt, to facili-<lb />tate the evening. |<lb /><lb />We could-have truly not asked for a better<lb />person to do this for us. She went table to table<lb />as we ate to check in and see if we were utiliz-<lb />ing proper etiquette and to answer any ques-<lb />tions we had,? Wagner said.<lb /><lb />There was a perfect mix of instruction and<lb />enjoying the meal, and for the 50 or so people<lb />who attended the event, not one negative com-<lb /><lb />Pd<lb /><lb />ment was made about her instruction.?<lb />The Greenville Evening Rotary Club was<lb />the primary sponsor of the dinner.<lb />Rather than the presence of large businesses,<lb />representatives were sent, many of which were<lb />lawyers and pharmaceutical representatives<lb />with their doctorates or professional degrees.<lb />There was also strong attendance from<lb />the college of business, such as the Associate<lb />Dean, Stanley Eakins. Other attendees in-<lb /><lb />cluded James Westmoreland, associate dean of |<lb /><lb />external affairs, Len Rhodes, assistant dean of -<lb />graduate studies, Miranda Williams, assistant<lb />director for the college of business career ser-<lb />vices, as well as several academic advisors.<lb /><lb />The Rotaract Clubs goal is to provide an<lb />opportunity for young men and women to de-<lb />velop the knowledge and skills to assist them<lb />in personal development, address the physi-<lb />cal and social needs of their communities and<lb />promote better relations between all people<lb />worldwide.<lb /><lb />Students that attended the etiquette dinner<lb />feel that the event was beneficial and offered<lb />valuable tips.<lb /><lb />The dinner seemed very professional and a<lb />setting that Im not really used to. It was a great<lb />learning experience for the future,? said fresh-<lb />man, Sarah Wilson.<lb /><lb />James Wagner chartered the club at ECU<lb />during the summer, and for the first semester<lb />worked on membership recruitment and reten-<lb />tion.<lb /><lb />Last semester, the Rotaract Club also spon-<lb />sored a Thanksgiving dinner for families.<lb />There are plans to hold the event annually and<lb />to expand it to cover a wider range of topics.<lb /><lb />We will definitely be making this an an-<lb />nual event, with some slight modifications to<lb />ensure that each ... [student] ... has a different<lb />etiquette anaie that s vital for students to<lb />learn,? Wagner said.<lb /><lb />This writer may be contacted at<lb />» news@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Contributed image<lb /><lb />Contributed image<lb /><lb />The etiquette dinner offered students networking opportunities with business professionals<lb /><lb />EXHIBIT continued from A4<lb /><lb />doodle sketch map by Orville Wright, and the students deci-<lb /><lb />1903 camp,? Tise said.<lb /><lb />phered the map so that we could do an overlay of the numbers<lb />and angles of that map,? Tise said.<lb /><lb />Tise and his students took a field trip to the site of the 1908<lb />flights to make sense of major points on the map, which was<lb />written in a code created by the Wright brothers.<lb /><lb />T feel like this is a map that Ive seen a thousand times and<lb />always said, ~Someday Ill figure that map out, and fortunately<lb />the students took the time and interest to figure it out, ise<lb />said.<lb /><lb />The second thing we studied was a table that has just been dis-<lb /><lb />covered at Kitty Hawk that is from the Wright brothers 1902-<lb /><lb />Americas First Rental Car Company Committed To Go 100% Green<lb /><lb />advantage.com/college<lb /><lb />This class is about documentary editing, but in this class we<lb />consider three-dimensional objects as documents. The brothers<lb />clearly made it on site, which is what is so interesting.?<lb /><lb />Tises students were required to complete four main tasks this<lb />semester. They learned how to decipher and interpret docu-<lb />ments, helped to construct a Web site (worldaloft.org, which<lb />went online yesterday and houses the students projects and<lb />research), gave presentations on components of the Wright<lb />brothers story and prepa ee for the Wright Brothers National<lb />Memorial exhibit.<lb /><lb />The class filled in many components on the Web site and en-<lb /><lb />hanced it to improve its ease of use, Tise said.<lb /><lb />T feel it represents North Carolina as a state where the un-<lb />thinkable becomes reality, where if you believe that you can do<lb />something, it can be accomplished,? said Nastassia Julian, ap-<lb />parel merchandising major. ,<lb /><lb />This seems to have been one of the most interesting explor-<lb /><lb />atory courses my students have taken,? <p>Inion<lb /><lb />lOp<lb /><lb />Letter to the Editor<lb />The Audacity of Hype<lb /><lb />PETER KALOGERINIS<lb />ECU STUDENT<lb /><lb />As I walk around ECUs campus, sit in class<lb />and talk to my friends, I hear an uncommon topic<lb />that is being brought up by our peers: politics.<lb />This election cycle has been one of the most elec-<lb />trifying and exciting ones of our time, and for the<lb />first time in 20 or so years, the North Carolina<lb />Democratic primary. will have relevance in pick-<lb />ing the nominee.<lb /><lb />After researching both Senators Hillary<lb />Clinton and Barack Obama, I have decided that<lb />I will vote for Sen. Clinton. Mr. Obamas appeal<lb />with many Democrats is unquestionable. He is<lb />the rock star? of this election; some supporters<lb />have literally fainted at his rallies. However, this<lb />status should not determine why one should vote<lb />for him.<lb /><lb />In terms of policy, there are relatively little<lb />differences, but they do~exist. Sen. Clinton has<lb />repeatedly talked about going after shady student<lb />loan lenders and expanding several financial aid<lb />opportunities to students and families. Clinton is<lb />committed to increasing access to federal-based<lb />aid like Pell grants and increasing the amount of<lb />federal aid available to individual students. Sen.<lb />Obama has also offered a plan, but it is not very<lb />strong on substance or as far-reaching as Sen.<lb />Clintons. This is an issue at which our student<lb />body should take a close look.<lb /><lb />The Iraq war is an issue that concerns every-<lb />one, and it should. This war sends an important<lb />and critical message to our foreign allies, and its<lb />not a good one. Sen. Clinton recognizes that the<lb />message we send to the world is important when<lb />it comes to foreign policy. She has stated a com-<lb />mitment to bringing our troops home as soon as<lb />possible, while preserving all the work our sol-<lb />diers have done the last few years. Whoever the<lb />president is will have a difficult job of cleaning<lb />up this war. You may have heard Sen. Obama say<lb />that he was vehemently against the war before<lb />it was popular,? however Obama's foreign policy<lb />had little material relevance at the time, because<lb />he was only a state-level politician. It is com-<lb />paratively easy to be against the war when the<lb />consequences of going against the intelligence at<lb />the time had no adverse impact on your political<lb />aspirations. cae |<lb /><lb />I will admit that determining how they differ<lb />is not always easy since Obama is long on elevated<lb /><lb />expression, yet clearly short on record. He has<lb /><lb />spent just three years in the U.S. Senate. Before<lb />that, he spent just eight years as a state legislator<lb />in Illinois. Before that, he was a university lec-<lb />turer, a community organizer and a civil-rights<lb />lawyer. For all his platitudes, Obama doesn't have<lb />a strong resume to be the President of the United<lb />States, quite simply the office of the worlds most<lb />powerful leader. The office of President at this<lb />point in time is no place for on-the-job training.<lb />Especially not when our nation is.at war, the<lb />economy is less than stellar, and when the whole<lb />world is looking to America for guidance.<lb /><lb />With this newfound political interest and<lb /><lb />energy, the American people have had a severe °<lb /><lb />problem in voting on issues rather than feelings.<lb />Just by talking to some of my friends and co-<lb />workers, Ive realized that some are deciding who<lb />to vote for, not based on issues, but rather trivial<lb />things such as how the person makes them feel or<lb />basing their vote on the fact that the candidates<lb />volunteers were the only ones to talk to them.<lb />Voters have become enthralled with rhetoric. This<lb />saddens me. We as a people should vote on the<lb />issues and the stances the candidates have taken,<lb />and their records, not on their ability to give a<lb />good speech, sex or color of their skin.<lb /><lb />It is important to point out that Obama is<lb />eloquent and excellent at giving speeches, but<lb />interesting anomalies occur when his speeches<lb />are analyzed over time. Sen. Obamas campaign<lb />has been quick to remind us all that words have<lb />meaning and are not empty gestures, and yet,<lb />paradoxically, as a nation we have sat and watched<lb />scandal after scandal erupt over Obamas words,<lb />after which the Obama campaign was quick to<lb />tell us that we really didnt understand what he<lb />really meant. So which is it? Are they just words,<lb />or are they riddles veiled in political meaning<lb />that only the Obama campaign can understand?<lb />You decide.<lb /><lb />My simple request to ECU students is this:<lb /><lb />Whoever you vote for, read up on their policies,<lb />before you vote. Vote on who you think is best |<lb /><lb />aligned with what you believe policy wise, not who<lb />makes you feel the best or can give the best speech.<lb />Think for yourselves, not what you are being told<lb />to think. The media also has an agenda, and the<lb />campaigns exploit that to their advantage. Don't<lb />fall for it. Indeed, we are the ones we have been<lb />waiting for. Our time is now, a time to choose not<lb />based on irreverent campaign slogans and vapid<lb />speeches. Are you worried about the country<lb />now? Then vote carefully, because yes, we can<lb />mess this up. ,<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Ce is<lb />jhe<lb /><lb />UNG NEMS<lb />ant FEO<lb />eoieeees<lb /><lb />S48<lb /><lb />Tre Mia<lb />CAGLECAR<lb /><lb />{ Your procrastination destination}<lb /><lb />THURSDAY APRIL 24,2008 paGE A10<lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />_ Why does it cost a billion dollars to eat<lb />in the dining halls? Of course I am referring to status updates<lb />on Facebook, a sensation taking college students<lb />by storm! :<lb /><lb />Facebook, since beginning its status updates<lb />feature, has increased our desire to know what<lb />friends are doing every minute. .<lb /><lb />Choosing the right status update is tough.<lb />What are you doing right now? The status has<lb />to be something interesting-- we cant look like<lb />we are living a dull life. Then again, it cant look<lb />like we are looking for too much attention ... but<lb />after all, isnt that the point?<lb /><lb />Sometimes I find myself thinking in Face-<lb />book status mode: Margot needs to do laundry.?<lb />Margot is leaving the house.? Margot is ...<lb />trying to finish this article? ... and so on. Some-<lb />times several minutes can go by with my preced-<lb /><lb />ing every thought with, Margot is...?<lb />_ Margot is going to try to stop thinking in<lb />Facebook status update mode. ,<lb />People change their Facebook statuses so<lb />the audience (other Facebook stalkers) can know<lb />something about what is going on in the persons<lb />life. If someone has had a terrible day, they may<lb />put this in their status to forewarn people of their<lb />lousy mood. Or if something great happened, it<lb />can be used to bring about congratulations.<lb />Some#Facebook statuses are put up just to be<lb />funny. The best one I have read was, Justin is chang-<lb />ing his Facebook status.? Clever. This also shows the<lb />weight given to Facebook statuses, as he mocks those<lb />of us checking in for every new event.<lb />~Someone is excited! ~Someone is tired of<lb />working on school. ~Someone is at the beach.<lb />Those were taken from actual Facebook sta-<lb />tuses I noticed today, but the winner is, Someone<lb />is shootin noodles if they hiccup.? Jack Kevorkian, commonly known<lb />as Dr. Death,? announced this year that he<lb />would be running for that seat in Congress.<lb />I have to ask myself, is it really necessary<lb />to fear the idea of such a man entering Con- -<lb />gress?<lb /><lb />Kevorkian, who claims to have assisted<lb />approximately 130 individuals to commit<lb />suicide, feels that.he was helping, not hurt-<lb />ing, these people. Every person he helped to<lb />end his or her life requested his services. He<lb />provided the means necessary to die, but he<lb />left it up to the individual to administer the<lb />death-inducing medication (except in the case<lb />of Thomas Hyde). ,<lb /><lb />A little unconvinced of Kevorkians ethics<lb />as a medical doctor, I decided to review the<lb />Hippocratic Oath. Nowhere in this document<lb />" the modern Hippocratic Oath, that is<lb />" does it state that a physician cannot assist<lb />a patient in committing suicide. Acknowl-<lb />edging this, I realized that Kevorkian did<lb /><lb />not break his oath, nor did he do something<lb />considered unethical; he helped his patients<lb />achieve a goal.<lb /><lb />The piece of evidence that prevents me<lb />from completely disregarding the stigmas<lb />against Kevorkian is the case of Thomas<lb />Hyde. Kevorkian, who at the time was not<lb />licensed to practice medicine, personally<lb />injected Hyde with a lethal amount of medica-<lb />tion. Although Hyde was cognitively aware of<lb />what he had requested Kevorkian to do and<lb />provided written consent, Kevorkian was no<lb />longer a practicing physician. Because of this<lb />case, Kevorkian was prosecuted. A Michigan<lb />court sentenced Kevorkian to 10-25 years in<lb />prison on the conviction of second-degree<lb />murder. He served eight years.<lb /><lb />Still, I cannot condemn this man or think<lb />that he could provide much threat to Con-<lb />gress. I dont think he would want to harm<lb />anyone. Kevorkian feels we need some hon-<lb />esty and sincerity instead of corrupt govern-<lb />ment in Washington.? Perhaps he only wants<lb />what is best for his community. Perhaps by<lb />assisting those individuals to commit suicide,<lb />he felt he was allowing those people a more<lb />peaceful way to go rather than suffering with<lb />a disease for their remaining days.<lb /><lb />As long as Kevorkian can get the needed<lb />3,000 signatures to get on the ballot, he will<lb />run for Congress as an independent. This 79-<lb />year-old man, who based his medical career<lb />on bettering the lives of others and prevent-<lb />ing others from suffering, is viewed by many<lb />as a threat. However, how can one contort<lb />Dr. Kevorkians actions into horrific murder?<lb /><lb />_ He cared for the well-being of his patients;<lb /><lb />he wanted for them the same thing they<lb />wanted for themselves " to suffer no more.<lb />Is this man truly dangerous or Just a person<lb />who genuinely cares and wishes to provide<lb />comfort to others? Is Dr. Kevorkian going to<lb />be a menace to our Congress or a politician<lb />who will actually help his constituency? With<lb />such controversy, this election season is sure<lb />to have some interesting results.<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Sarah Campbell<lb /><lb />Editor in Chief<lb />Kimberly Bellamy Natalie Jurgen<lb />News Editor Asst. <lb />PAGE A11 1<lb />Letter from the Editor<lb />Saying good bye<lb /><lb />SARAH CAMPBELL<lb />EDITOR IN CHIEF<lb /><lb />. Four years. Three years of donning red and<lb />khaki for a part-time Job at Target that has led me<lb />to meet some pretty amazing people. Two years of<lb />Mondays and Wednesday spent in the newsroom<lb /><lb />working at The East Carolinian brainstorming °<lb /><lb />ideas, perfecting layout and falling deeper in<lb /><lb />love with my passion for writing. Countless all- |<lb /><lb />nighters. Dozens of pizza and movie nights with<lb />friends. A few nights of reckless abandonment in<lb />which I had to enlist the help from the loves of<lb />my life to pick me up because I was too weak to<lb />carry myself home.<lb /><lb />When I reminisce about my college experi-<lb />ence, these are the things I cherish the most.<lb /><lb />When I look back on my time at ECU, I barely<lb />remember the times when I bombed a quiz that I<lb />forgot to do the reading for or the days when the<lb />rain beat down so relentlessly on my body that<lb />not only were my clothes left drenched, but my<lb />spirits were dampened as well.<lb /><lb />These times dont make me bat an eye or skip<lb />a beat; they meant nothing in the grand scheme<lb />of my life. But the nights I spent in the news-<lb />room preparing this paper for the student body<lb />to read, critique and eventually throw away are<lb />the ones that I treasure most. For the past year<lb /><lb />- | have taken over as Editor-in-Chief of The East<lb /><lb />Carolinian, and let me tell you-- the Journey hasn't<lb />been easy. My days have been filled with phone<lb />calls addressing problems, story ideas flooding<lb />my inbox and racking my mind to find solutions<lb />when everything seems to be falling apart.<lb />Every Monday and Wednesday for the past<lb />year I have spent nearly 12 hours in the newsroom<lb />with a group of people who have not only because<lb /><lb />my close friends, but family who have been there ©<lb />to support me when times got rough--both in my ©<lb /><lb />personal and professional life.<lb /><lb />As | sit writing my final letter from the<lb />Editor, a wave of relief does wipe over me--but<lb />also, a sense of sadness. It will be wonderful to<lb />go to bed every night and not worry about what<lb />will run in the newspaper or how the pages will<lb />be laid out. It also breaks my heart to know that<lb />I am closing this chapter in my life and biding<lb />farewell to friends that I cant imagine living a<lb />day without.<lb /><lb />I'll miss strolling through campus while the<lb />squirrels scamper past my feet and the wind<lb />blows through my hair, or at least that s how ll<lb />remember it.<lb /><lb />This writer can contacted at<lb />editor@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Where did the year go? ,<lb /><lb />Wrapping up my thoughts<lb /><lb />LISA ENSMINGER<lb />OPINION:-WRITER<lb /><lb />The year is winding down, papers and exams<lb />are thrown at us at the last minute and people<lb />are celebrating the awesome weather. Some stu-<lb />dents are staying here in Pirate town for summer<lb />classes, some are packing up cars for the ride<lb />home, and some are graduating and moving on<lb />to the next chapter of life. Saying goodbyes and<lb /><lb />sealing off yet another year is an exciting, yet<lb />sad, experience, and everyone goes his or her "<lb /><lb />own way.<lb /><lb />Thank goodness this semester is almost over,<lb />because I am so ready to be done with it. Im ready<lb />to take that last exam scheduled and sell back<lb />those books to get such little cash back. Although<lb />ending classes sounds fabulous right now, leaving<lb /><lb />all my friends doesnt sound so great. I came to .<lb /><lb />ECU this year as a transfer student and I feel like<lb />I just got started. I have met so many people and<lb />have had many amazing experiences. | remember<lb />setting up my room, meeting my roommates,<lb />and exploring good ol Greenville like it was just<lb />yesterday. Its not time to pack up my stuff and<lb />move back home yet...is it?<lb /><lb />' Sadly, it is, and I wouldn't be so sad: to leave<lb />" four months away is not going to change much<lb />" but I will be studying abroad next semester<lb />in Paris. Although I will be sad not to be a part<lb />of ECUs campus for a semester, I cant let that<lb />hold me back from living my dream. Living in<lb />a foreign country for a whole semester will be<lb />extremely difficult, but so thrilling at the same<lb />time. Europe is such a fascinating place, and the<lb />thought that I will be a part of that culture for<lb />four months is amazing ... but quite challenging<lb />at the same time. Speaking French 24 hours a day,<lb />seven days a week and living in such different<lb />conditions from what I am used to, being a spoiled<lb />American, seems quite intimidating. Millions of<lb />questions are running through my head. Where<lb /><lb />will I go ina grand city like Paris? Will I scream "<lb /><lb />American if people just look at me? What to do<lb />if I get homesick?<lb /><lb />These questions and many more have been<lb />consuming my thoughts ever since I received that<lb />aeceptance letter in the mail. How am I going to<lb />survive in a country like France? I know I will<lb />be consumed with anxiety about what I am going<lb />to pack, how much money I will spend, and how<lb /><lb />I will survive in a foreign country. I cannot let<lb /><lb />my fears and anxiety prevent me from having<lb />the time of my life.<lb /><lb />I feel blessed to study abroad because Im able<lb />to live in a country Im in love with, to speak the<lb />language | have been learning, and to experience<lb />things I have never experienced before. Study-<lb />ing abroad, as I have heard, changes a person<lb />completely and opens.a new door to many new<lb />and exciting opportunities. You can engage in<lb /><lb />different cultures, learn about peoples habits,<lb /><lb />and see unreal places.<lb /><lb />So, now that my thoughts are scattered on<lb />this paper and I go about my own way to the<lb />land of Paris, I wish you all the best with your<lb />plans for the next few months and next semester.<lb />Whether it is working at a restaurant all summer<lb />or making big lifestyle changes, make the best<lb />out of everything that you do and never take any<lb />day for granted!<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Tie xo CAnOLENITAN.* OPINION<lb /><lb />THURSDAY, APRIL 24, 2008<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate Rants. The semester comes to an end, friends leave<lb />for the summer, campus is filled with students<lb /><lb />struggling to pack up all of their belongings and<lb /><lb />move out of the dorms, the weather changes and<lb />life becomes different.<lb /><lb />Its that time when youre emotions are in<lb />an oxymoron-like knot of both happy and sad at<lb />the same time.<lb /><lb />Life changes, and with it comes new friends,<lb /><lb />new classes, new teachers, new beginnings.<lb /><lb />This year, a big change is coming for me:<lb />Im taking over The East Carolinian as the new<lb />Editor-in-Chief for the 2008-09 school year,<lb /><lb />and Im caught up in those end-of-the-semester<lb />crazy emotions.<lb />Although working for this fine newspaper<lb /><lb />_ is hard work (most nights are spent guzzling<lb /><lb />some type of caffeine and stressing over every<lb />little detail), 1 have made some of my best friends<lb /><lb />working here. Over furiously typing articles at<lb /><lb />11 p.m. on a production night and downing fast<lb />food meals, The East Carolinian office has become<lb />like my family away from family. And my taking<lb />over signals that others are leaving. But as the<lb />old adage says, the news stops for no one.? And<lb />I am no exception.<lb /><lb />Being the Features editor for the last year has<lb />only confirmed my passion for journalism and<lb /><lb />how it really can change peoples lives.<lb /><lb />Every issue that we put out I feel proud of<lb />and work relentlessly to make it great. Some of<lb /><lb />_my favorite stories that I have written about this<lb />year are about those things that really touch me<lb /><lb />as a college student, and I hope that our readers<lb />feel the same way.<lb /><lb />I want our school paper to reach new heights °<lb />this year, and I have big plans for it. Next year ~<lb />might not cover the same things as this past year, »<lb />but I hope that I can take The East Carolinian up a<lb />notch so that my predecessors will be proud.<lb /><lb />So as I take up this new post as editor, I will<lb />miss the ones that are graduating and going into<lb />the real world, but I will work my hardest to make<lb />our schools newspaper interesting, real and read-<lb />able for all students who attend ECU.<lb /><lb />Change is always hard, but I know what Im<lb />getting into, and Im ready for it.<lb /><lb />As all of the graduating seniors say ~goodbye,<lb />its my turn to say ~hello.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at -<lb />features@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb /></p>

The Pirates have hit 53<lb />home runs this season, which<lb />tops C-USA, and is 15 more<lb />than the two teams tied for<lb />second.<lb /><lb />Led by breakout seasons by<lb />senior Corey Kemp and infielder<lb />Ryan Wood, ECUs offense has<lb />been as explosive as ever in 1 the<lb />Billy Godwin era.<lb /><lb />Kemp, who had five home<lb />runs and 41 RBIs all last season,<lb />_1s leading C-USA with 12 home<lb />runs and has drove in a team-<lb />high 46 runs. As gaudy as those<lb />numbers seem, whats even more<lb />impressive is Kemps consis-<lb />tency at the plate, as he has came<lb />through in clutch situations<lb />multiple times for the Pirates<lb />so far this year.<lb /><lb />Wood is first on the team in<lb />batting average, second on the<lb /><lb />team in RBIs and has scored<lb /><lb />more runs than any other player |<lb /><lb />in C-USA.<lb />Junior Brandon Henderson<lb />has also come into his own at<lb /><lb />_ the plate, having his most pro-<lb />ductive and consistent season of<lb /><lb />his career.<lb /><lb />These players stellar offen-<lb />sive seasons coupled with the<lb />usual offensive suspects like<lb />Harrison Eldridge, Kyle Roller<lb />and Stephen Batts having pro-<lb />ductive years has made ECU a<lb />very dangerous baseball team.<lb /><lb />But what is even more<lb />dangerous, and usually more<lb />valuable as the postseason<lb />approaches, is the pitching<lb />depth.<lb /><lb />Coming into the season,<lb /><lb />many people thought the Pirates _<lb /><lb />would struggle on the mound<lb />because of the lack of experi-<lb />ence behind senior No. 1 pitcher<lb />~LJ. Nei-<lb />ther has fully embraced the<lb />role or shown the ability to<lb />dominate late in games, which<lb />is a Characteristic that you<lb />will usually find when watch-<lb />ing teams that make it to the<lb />College World Series.<lb /><lb />In years past, including<lb />last year, ECU has lost post-<lb />season games and has seen<lb />its season end because of the<lb />inability to win the close<lb />games in the final innings. |<lb /><lb />This years bullpen has<lb />shows flashes of potential,<lb />and if the Pirates can find<lb />some consistency from the<lb />back end of its pitching staff,<lb />pitching depth can be a valu-<lb />able asset in the coming<lb />months"something that<lb />ECU hasnt recently had<lb />during the postseason.<lb /><lb />Whenever the baseball<lb />teams season ends, all stu-<lb />dents will have one other<lb />huge sport to look forward<lb />to, and thats football.<lb /><lb />Last year, the ECU foot-<lb />ball team went 8-5, its high-<lb />est win total since 2000. The<lb />successful season, which was<lb /><lb />capped by a Hawaii Bowl vic-<lb />tory over nationally-respected<lb />Boise State, also marked the<lb />first time the Pirates have<lb />recorded back-to-back win-<lb />ning campaigns for the first<lb />time since 1999-2000.<lb /><lb />With one of the brightest<lb />young coaches in college foot-<lb />ball in its arsenal, and now a<lb />couple of winning season to<lb />build on, the sky is currently<lb />the limit for ECU football.<lb /><lb />Next years schedule<lb />includes games with NC State,<lb />Virginia, West Virginia and a<lb />season-opening matchup with<lb />Virginia Tech in Charlotte.<lb />Matchups like these and the<lb />success under Skip Holtz<lb />gives students a lot to look<lb />forward to next fall"and it<lb />will be here sooner than you<lb />think. ,<lb /><lb />Also, both ECU basketball<lb />programs are as stable as<lb />they've been in years, thanks<lb />to coaching stability.<lb /><lb />The womens program has<lb />a very knowledgeable, hard-<lb />working coach in Sharon<lb />Baldwin-Tener, and will only<lb />lose one senior from this<lb />years team when they hit the<lb />hardwood next semester.<lb /><lb />With the recent contract<lb />extension Mack McCarthy,<lb />the mens program also has<lb />coaching stability for the first<lb />time in a long time, and will<lb />also have key scorers return-<lb />ing, led by senior Sam Hin-<lb />nant and James Legan.<lb /><lb />So as you sell your books<lb />back, finish up exams and<lb />forget about school for awhile,<lb />dont forget this schools<lb />sports"because you just<lb />never know what you could<lb />miss.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />newborns to the very old.<lb /><lb />2008 ECU FOOTBALL<lb /><lb />Date<lb />Aug. 30<lb />Sept. 6<lb />Sept. 13<lb />sept. 20<lb />pept.2/<lb />Oct, bi<lb />Oct. 18<lb />Nov. 2<lb />Nov. 8<lb />Nov. 15.<lb />Nov. 22.<lb />Nov. 29 -<lb /><lb />SGHEDULE<lb /><lb />sedis 3.<lb />vs. Virginia Tech<lb />vs. West Virginia<lb />at Tulane<lb />at NC State<lb />vs. Houston<lb />at Virginia<lb />vs. Memphis.<lb />at UCEF<lb />vs. Marshall<lb />at Southern Miss<lb />at UAB<lb />vs. UTEP<lb /><lb />Many activities occupy our days"we get up and get dressed, eat<lb />breakfast, brush our teeth, dial the phone, write a check, drive<lb />the car, fold the laundry, and shop for groceries. Next thing<lb />we know Jonathan and Wyatt<lb />have mixed up phones, and no<lb />game? Jonathan finds himself<lb />caught up in the List,? a casual<lb />sex Club for the rich, the confi-<lb />dent, the well-connected.<lb /><lb />No names, no rough<lb />stuff, no talking business,?<lb /><lb />just a phone call from another<lb />meniber an Are you: ipee<lb /><lb />tonight?? and a no-conse-<lb /><lb />quences roll in the four-star-<lb />hotel hay with the likes of<lb />nameless women with healthy<lb />sexual appetites, women played<lb />by Natasha Henstridge (Elz<lb />Stone, Species) and Charlotte<lb />Rampling (The Verdict), whose<lb />character tells him its the inti-<lb />macy without the intricacy.?<lb /><lb />But when Jonathan meets<lb />up with this pretty young thing<lb />he saw on the subway (Michelle<lb />Williams), the casual turns<lb />complicated. Hes smitten. He<lb />wants to break the rules. He<lb />wants to date her. Of course<lb />thats the very moment she<lb />disappears and hes sure some<lb />harm has come to her and<lb />wonders how Wyatt may be<lb />involved.<lb /><lb />Director Marcel Langeneg-<lb />ger comes from the world of TV<lb />commercials, so the film has<lb /><lb />ae so<lb /><lb />the sheen of a magazine cover.<lb /><lb />The offices are sterile, empty--<lb />white, black and blue voids.<lb />The strip joint Wyatt and<lb />Jonathan check out is music-<lb />video perfect. But Deceptions<lb />sound, music and image con-<lb />jure up a feeling of isolation,<lb />desperation and dread.<lb />McGregor plays this guy<lb /><lb />- with the stooped posture of a<lb /><lb />loser, and a convincing Amer-<lb />ican accent. His face gives<lb />away Jonathan's despair. Jack-<lb />man, on the other hand, is<lb />the very picture of a guy who<lb />isn't a salesman, but sure is<lb />selling you something. The profoundly curious<lb />beats of producer Ant that lace every track on the<lb />album maintain a simplistic and creative sound<lb />with a new commercialism not present on previous<lb />Atmosphere releases.<lb /><lb />The depression, rejection and cynicism that<lb /><lb />other Atmosphere albums have been so entrenched<lb /><lb />by were replaced with an older, more well-rounded<lb />style of rapping in this album.<lb /><lb />The rhymes of Slug are no longer so saturated<lb />with sob stories about ex-girlfriends and spite<lb /><lb />_ for the commercialism of hip-hop, but life lessons<lb /><lb />along with some all-too-human stories of failures<lb />and triumphs. The poetic nature of the raps on the<lb /><lb />album, combined with content most anyone can<lb /><lb />see ATMOSPHERE page C8<lb /><lb /></p>

          <lb />PAGE Cs<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ FEATURES<lb /><lb />Get fit for summer<lb /><lb />Follow these exercises<lb />for the body of your<lb />dreams<lb /><lb />(MCT)<lb /><lb />If you've hit an exercise slump,<lb />you might need some motivation<lb />to get you moving. Heres a bit:<lb />Summer is upon us.<lb /><lb />Theres no need to panic.<lb />Its still possible to slim down<lb />~in time for the beach, but it will<lb />take a heavy-duty commitment.<lb />That translates into eating<lb />healthful low-cal meals, doing<lb /><lb />cardio five days a week along<lb /><lb />with strength training for three<lb />days, and staying focused, said<lb />Cynthia Knapen, an Arlington,<lb />Texas, personal trainer accred-<lb />ited with the National Strength<lb />and Conditioning Association.<lb /><lb />Her advice: Find a workout<lb /><lb />you really enjoy and just do it.<lb />Running burns mega calories<lb />for those who regularly hit the<lb />road or treadmill. But it doesnt<lb />help much if you cant bring<lb />yourself to lace up your run-<lb />ning shoes.<lb /><lb />To jump-start an exercise<lb />routine, Knapen has come up<lb />with two of her favorite moves.<lb />They might stir up images of<lb />your high school gym class, but<lb />the addition of weights for one<lb />of them should speed up results.<lb />By the time summer arrives,<lb />you just might be able to fit into<lb />your bikini.<lb /><lb />PUSH-UPS<lb /><lb />What it works: Entire body.<lb />A Knapen favorite.<lb /><lb />What to remember: Suck in<lb />your stomach and dont arch your<lb />back. Do as many as you can.<lb /><lb />There are three ways to<lb />do this exercise, depending on<lb />how strong you are. Beginners<lb />should start on their knees.<lb />More advanced folks can go to<lb /><lb />_ their toes. Showoffs can use a<lb /><lb />chair to hold their feet.<lb />1. Position yourself face-<lb />down with palms flat on the<lb /><lb />ground and a bit more than<lb /><lb />shoulder width apart. Arms<lb />should be extended.<lb /><lb />2. Lower upper body slowly,<lb />bending your arms, until your<lb />nose touches the ground. Keep<lb />your body straight.<lb /><lb />3. Push back up to the start-<lb /><lb />*<lb /><lb />ing position.<lb /><lb />ARM SWINGS<lb /><lb />~What it works: Biceps<lb /><lb />What you need: Weights<lb /><lb />What to remember: Start<lb />by inhaling<lb /><lb />1. With feet spread apart,<lb />lower yourself into a squat, hold-<lb />ing weight with both hands in<lb />front of you. Arms are extended<lb />but relaxed at the elbow.<lb /><lb />2. Squat down as low as<lb />possible, lowering your weight<lb />almost to the floor.<lb /><lb />3. Swing arms forward and<lb />then up over your head while<lb />squeezing your glutes, sucking<lb /><lb />in your stomach and rising to a<lb /><lb />standing position.<lb /><lb />4. Return to starting position.<lb /><lb />Repeat 8-12 times. Do 2-3 sets.<lb />-ONLINE HELP<lb /><lb />Fitness.com is packed with<lb />free exercises to get you in shape<lb />by summer.<lb /><lb />Just plug in the body part you<lb />want to target, then add where<lb />you want to exercise (the gym<lb />versus at home) and what kind of<lb />activity you prefer (cardio versus<lb />weight training). One more click,<lb />and suddenly your computer<lb />screen turns into a kind of mini-<lb /><lb />gym, with a fitness pro showing<lb />you exercises that work.<lb /><lb />There are also low-cal reci-<lb />pes, fitness tips and a body-mass<lb />calculator.<lb /><lb />BURNING CALORIES<lb /><lb />To peel off the pounds, run-<lb />ning is your best bet. Rather then deliver-<lb />ing any sort of rehashed beats,<lb />Ant offers a hypnotically new<lb />edge to this album. Although<lb />the beats on When Life Gives<lb />You Lemons, You Paint That Shit<lb />Gold feel a bit more mainstream,<lb />they still hold the same intrigue<lb />and underground styling that is<lb />present on Atmospheres under-<lb />ground classic God Loves Ugly.<lb />The introduction to the<lb />album features a tame and<lb />soft-spoken Slug rapping over<lb />what sounds similar to some<lb />nightmarish, ballroom-style<lb />elevator music. The modesty of<lb />the album doesnt last long, as<lb />it breaks into the second track<lb />on the album, titled Puppets,?<lb />a proclamation of self-reliance<lb />and realization featuring haunt-<lb />ing pianos along with a teeth-<lb /><lb />chattering bass.<lb /><lb />Standout track Dreamer?<lb />tells the invigorating story of<lb />a single mothers triumph to<lb />the backdrop of.an epic beat<lb />that sounds like it was made<lb />for a self-help audiocassette.<lb />A similar storytelling style<lb />is displayed flawlessly on the<lb />track, Your Glass House,? but<lb />with a more cynical look at<lb />those tortuous, almost shameful<lb />hangovers.<lb /><lb />Other tracks, such as Yes-<lb />terday,? take on a more personal<lb />perspective, with Slug appear-<lb />ing awkwardly vulnerable in<lb />a poetic eulogy to his recently<lb />deceased father.<lb /><lb />This is clearly Atmospheres<lb />most progressive and dynamic<lb />album to date. When Life Gives<lb />You Lemons, You Paint That Shit<lb />Gold is a 15-track reinvention<lb />of hip-hop with a firmer grasp<lb />on the musics roots than the<lb />majority of rap featured in the<lb />mainstream today.<lb /><lb />Even with a bold new foot<lb />forward for Atmosphere, they<lb />remain loyal to their love for<lb />the sounds of underground and<lb />independent hip-hop.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />features@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />a<lb /><lb />QRS<lb /><lb />pause SOT Eee oe ee Oe SCHOo,<lb />s<lb /><lb />ay<lb /><lb />NO WONDER PEOPLE THINK<lb /><lb />CARAVAGGIO |<lb /><lb />IS A GUY ON THE SOPRANOS.<lb /><lb />ART.
