        <p>WOON)<lb /><lb />Opin<lb /><lb />Pain at the<lb />gas pump<lb /><lb />Democrats all bark, no bite<lb /><lb />J.D. LEWIS<lb />OPINION EDITOR |<lb /><lb />ItTs time to revisit one of my. favorite topics,<lb />rising gas prices ... or as | like to call it, rape at<lb />the pump.<lb /><lb />Oil jumped toa record $117 per barrel yester-<lb />day. The excuse this time? A Japanese oil tanker<lb />was fired upon by an unidentified ship, no doubt<lb />piloted by more pesky Muslim terrorists, off the<lb />coast of Yemen. Hundreds of gallons of oil were<lb />lost, and the dictators and terrorists behind OPEC<lb />and the thieves running the oil companies would<lb />have us'believe that the Japanese tanker was car-<lb />rying enough oil to supply the whole world and<lb />that those hundreds of gallons lost, in the grand<lb />scheme of things, will have a major impact on<lb />supply. And I stopped eating because mom burned<lb />the biscuits.<lb /><lb />Something has occurred to me since Repub-<lb />lican presidential candidate John McCain has<lb />proposed suspending the federal gas tax for the<lb />summer. Previously I wrote about the Democrats<lb />in Congress trying to make oil company CEOs<lb /><lb />out to be the bad guysT in all of this"and they _<lb /><lb />are guilty as sin"but what Congress fails to do<lb />is acknowledge its own hand in inflicting pain<lb />at the pump.<lb /><lb />_ As usual, the Democrats are all bark and<lb />no bite. While threatening to revoke billions of<lb />dollars in tax breaks to the oil industry in the<lb /><lb />face of record profits, not one Democrat has .<lb /><lb />proposed suspending or even just lowering the<lb />federal gasoline tax . . and they won't. If the oil<lb />companies are making record profits, then the<lb />government is also making a record profit in<lb />tax revenue, and asking a Democrat to let go of<lb />someone elseTs money is like asking someone with<lb />diarrhea not to poop: It ainTt gonna happen. If the<lb />general population were only half as dumb as the<lb />Democratic Party thinks we are, we'd all have<lb />to wear padded helmets and have drool running<lb />down our faces.<lb /><lb />If the government isnTt going to help us, then<lb />maybe itTs time we started taking matters into<lb />our own hands. Show me a person being robbed<lb />under any other circumstance who isn't going to<lb /><lb />fight like hell.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Someone tell<lb />me ITm wrong<lb /><lb />Please!<lb /><lb />ALEX LAROCCA<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />A friend of mine informed me yesterday that<lb />ECU is changing its grading system and it will<lb />be implemented this semester. Now I know I<lb />probably shouldn't be writing a whole article<lb />about something I only heard about, but I went<lb />to the schoolTs Web site and typed in a search to<lb />try to find out. Although it didnTt say anything<lb />specifically about a change, I did in fact see the<lb />proposal for a change in our grading.<lb /><lb />In case you havenTt heard (and I hope you<lb />haven't), the system could be changed to an A+,<lb /><lb />A, A- system, with different GPA values for each -<lb /><lb />grade. That's right, each one has its own GPA value,<lb />meaning that your GPA will fall ... just like mine!<lb /><lb />Now, as I mentioned, this is just something<lb />I heard from a friend, and I couldn't find much<lb />on the subject. But, on a more honest note, I am<lb />writing this hastily and couldnTt do too much<lb />research on the subject; I leave this to anyone<lb />who is reading this.<lb /><lb />If you are reading this and it scares the crap<lb />out of you, please go online and donTt stop search-<lb />ing until you can write some sort of comment<lb />online telling me what an idiot I am to scare you.<lb /><lb />I donTt want to get all charged about the<lb />administration and how much this would really,<lb />really suck before I even find out if it is true, but<lb />just in case ... why? Perhaps this is a great idea<lb /><lb />and it could make ECU a much more difficult<lb /><lb />institution, placing it higher than it has ever been<lb /><lb />amongst the academically-challenging universi-_<lb /><lb />. but I donTt want that.<lb />In all honesty, ITm not sure if I have even<lb /><lb />ties .<lb /><lb />made an A+ here at ECU. ITm not sure if thatT ne<lb /><lb />good thing or a bad thing, but I always have Just<lb />wanted to make that A. If this new system is in<lb />fact true, that would mean everyone would have<lb />to start trying a lot harder around here. Not only<lb />that, but lam getting the feeling that our atoleyes<lb />are in a lot of trouble.<lb /><lb />So prove me wrong, people, and write back to<lb />me about how stupid I am for writing this. Whether you're a senior<lb />looking past graduation and<lb />what your career will be or<lb /><lb />a sophomore who's now suc- °<lb /><lb />cessfully halfway through col-<lb />lege, there's a lot going on<lb />and a lot of future planning.<lb /><lb />There's a small portion of<lb />people I know, however, who are<lb />finishing up this year and plan-<lb />ning to take a year off? from<lb /><lb />~school. I'm not talking about<lb />taking a year to study abroad or<lb /><lb />do volunteer work, I mean the<lb />quit-school-and-work type of<lb /><lb />taking a year off. I have just one<lb /><lb />word for everyone who is plan-<lb />ning. to do this for the 2008-09<lb /><lb />school year: DON'T.<lb /><lb />I know what it's like to be<lb /><lb />in a rough spot financially with<lb /><lb />school and having to work<lb />multiple jobs, just to make ends<lb />meet on a tightly budgeted<lb />college kid's life. I know that<lb />it may seem like a good idea to<lb /><lb />take that time off, save some<lb />money up and return to school<lb /><lb />when the time's right.? I know<lb />because I did it myself after my<lb />freshman year.<lb /><lb />In the summer of 2005, | ©<lb /><lb />quit school, started working as<lb />an IT specialist for $10 an hour,<lb />and thought I had it made. I was<lb />saving $200 a week, had plenty<lb />of money for spending on myself<lb /><lb />and kept on saying, Yatra<lb />register again next semester.<lb /><lb />This way I won't have to work<lb /><lb />when I return to school.? I kept<lb /><lb />_ postponing applying so often<lb /><lb />that it got to the point where I<lb />believed that you really didn't<lb />need a degree to make it in the<lb />world, despite what everyone<lb /><lb />said.. I decided I'd stick to my -<lb /><lb />career and work my way up<lb />through hard work instead of<lb />having a degree.<lb /><lb />Well, my boss had other<lb />plans. You. know how they<lb />always tell you that a degree is<lb />the most important thing you<lb />can have in a job hunt nowa-<lb />days? Well, it's also the most<lb />important thing you can have to<lb />keep a job, too. North Carolina<lb />isnTt a right-to-work state, so<lb />your employer can fire you at<lb />a momentTs notice without any<lb />reason or repercussions. When<lb />my employer found someone<lb />who had the same level of skills<lb />as I did, but with a degree, he<lb />let me go.<lb /><lb />Luckily, he fired me four<lb />weeks before the deadline for<lb />me to register for fall semester.<lb />I came back to ECU crestfallen.<lb />I had to use most of the money<lb />I saved up just to pay for rent,<lb />utilities and my groceries, so my<lb />plan of saving up so I wouldn't<lb />have to work while at school<lb />completely fell through. I was<lb />also much older than all my<lb />peers and a little bit bitter over<lb /><lb />my past situation, so it made it<lb /><lb />difficult for me to re-adapt to<lb />college life.<lb /><lb />Thanks to working my butt<lb />off, taking 21-credit-hour semes-<lb />ters and signing up for summer<lb /><lb />classes, ITm back on schedule for<lb />graduating next spring. I also<lb />learned how to balance jobs,<lb />low interest school loans and<lb /><lb />scholarships, so the temptation |<lb /><lb />of taking time off to work won't<lb />be so enticing this time.<lb /><lb />My situation may not seem.<lb />that dire, and you might be<lb />wondering why T'm warning<lb />people to stay in school and not<lb />let the fear of money pull you<lb /><lb />out. I know there are probably ©<lb /><lb />plenty of people reading this<lb />who either know someone who<lb />took time off or took time off<lb />themselves from school. Well,<lb /><lb />guys and girls who came back<lb /><lb />to school, we're pretty much in<lb />the minority. Of the 20 people<lb />I knew of who took. time off<lb />from school to work after their<lb /><lb />freshman year, ITm the only one<lb /><lb />who returned. Everyone else<lb />either got so caught up in work,<lb />paying off their student loans<lb />for a degree they'll never get or<lb />various Other distractions, that<lb />they're now to the point where<lb />they feel itTd be completely use-<lb />less to return to school, despite<lb /><lb />how much their parents pen<lb /><lb />them to return.<lb /><lb />So kids, please hear me out.<lb />If you're having trouble paying<lb />for school or just feel down-<lb />trodden by the process, go to<lb />college part time and work full<lb />time, or try to take classes at a<lb />community college after work.<lb />Please just donTt completely<lb />drop out of school. ItTs a deci-<lb />sion ITve regretted, and I know<lb />you will too.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Head Copy Editor<lb /><lb />Summer 1s<lb /><lb />almost here<lb /><lb />~A time to relax and reflect<lb /><lb />JESSICA DUNLOW _<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Well, guys, itTs finally here; the week we have<lb />all been waiting for and dreading ... hell week.<lb />I donTt know about you, but this week is going<lb />to be exceedingly stressful for me, from classes<lb />~wrapping up, to campus organization banquets,<lb />this week puts me and many others in overdrive.<lb /><lb />So I tend to enjoy the idea of reveling in what is to<lb /><lb />come. What will be the benefit of all of our hard<lb />work and dedication? Summer. Now, if summer<lb />for you means the whole week-and-a-half break<lb />that you get before resuming summer school, take<lb />advantage! Relax and do as little as possible. Get a<lb />tan, have some laughs, and hang around with family<lb />and friends. For those of us who are going to be<lb />working all summer, be sure to take some time for<lb />yourself: Working for The ManT takes a lot of energy,<lb />and yes, he tries to suck the fun out of everything.<lb />Don't let it get you down, because our time is now!<lb />Try to escape. When youre sitting in the library<lb />during hell week and exam week, take a minute. Take<lb />a long, deep breath and imagine how great itTs going<lb />to feel walking out from that last exam. ~There'll be no<lb />more professors to give out assignments or force you<lb />to memorize something that youre not quite sure why<lb />you should in the first place ... at least for a week. "<lb /><lb />Graduates: I bet you are excited! The only advice<lb /><lb />I can give you is to enjoy the last bit of freedom you<lb />have. If youre going directly into the work force or if<lb />you have a killer internship that you worked so hard<lb />to get, take that week or so that you have for a nice<lb />break, and reflect on the four (or for some three to<lb />six) years that you spent at ECU, your second home.<lb />At the risk of sounding completely sappy and like a<lb />person who enjoys chick-flicks (which I do on occa-<lb />sion), the memories you made here are some of the best<lb />you will ever have. I know, I know, so cliché. Think of<lb />it this way, however: when you look past the bad stuff-<lb />- the fights, the ends of relationships, the failed classes,<lb />the crappy jobs-- you had a blast here. Your friends<lb />and education are the foundation you need to make<lb />it in the real world,? although I like to agree with |<lb />John Mayer in believing that there is no such thing.<lb />So; you will put down this paper, go back to your<lb />studying, or maybe have a short daydream about<lb />what your summer will be like, and continue to<lb />function through the last full week of classes. Do<lb />it. By all means, finish that extra credit and the<lb />final papers-- just do me one favor: step outside your<lb />confines for a moment and enjoy the thought that<lb />one day you will be out in the so-called ~real world.T<lb />Things will not be as they are now, so appreciate<lb />college one last time, future graduates. For the rest<lb />of us, think about it this way: we have one, two<lb /><lb />or three years left, but they sure will go by fast.<lb /><lb />Take a deep breath! The new film, Harold &amp;<lb />Kumar Escape From Guantanamo<lb />Bay (opening April 25), in which<lb />our boys run afoul of Homeland<lb />Security and air marshals all<lb />while befriending President<lb />Bush, toss political topicality<lb />into the original movieTs mix of<lb />sex, drugs and sliders. |<lb /><lb />I was a little worried that<lb />we might invite trouble,? said<lb />Cho, who is seated with Penn<lb />and co-star Neil Patrick Harris<lb />in an Austin hotel the day after<lb />the film screened at the South<lb />by Southwest festival.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />I thought maybe it was so<lb />controversial that weTd end up<lb />with a big, stripped-down ver-<lb />sion of the movie.?<lb /><lb />I think the New York Times<lb />legitimized us to an extent,?<lb />Penn said. I was a little cau-<lb />tious, but I was a lot less worried<lb />[after their story said] the issue<lb />of Guantanamo has become<lb />this pop-culture phenomenon<lb />thatTs very different from what<lb />it means politically. ThereTs<lb />political satire in this film, but<lb />it is not a political film. It does<lb />not take a stance. ItTs just meant<lb />to be fun and I hope thatTs what<lb />the audience gets out of it.?<lb /><lb />But, perhaps they protest<lb />too much.<lb /><lb />White Castle, which was<lb />ostensibly about a late-night<lb />search for the perfect greasy<lb />burger, was also seen as a socio-<lb />political breakthrough: It pro-<lb />posed the unusual by putting<lb /><lb />two Asian-American guys at<lb />the center of a Hollywood slob<lb />comedy. In fact, Cho, 35, whoTs<lb />of Korean descent, and Penn, 31,<lb />who's of Indian descent, initially<lb />had some reservations about<lb />that film, too. ,<lb /><lb />When a white guy hands<lb />me a script and says, ~ITve writ-<lb />ten this for you, you get suspi-<lb /><lb />cious about how they're going to |<lb /><lb />treat your race and whether itTs<lb />going to be a script that doesnTt<lb />deal with [race] or deals with<lb />it,? Cho remembers.<lb /><lb />It started to deal with it,<lb />and I thought, ~Oh, this is inter-<lb />esting. They are dealing with<lb />it in a way that feels real to me,<lb />and it is funny. And itTs making<lb /><lb />_ fun of [race], which is a part<lb /><lb />of life, rather than doing it in a<lb />Black-History-Month style.?<lb />Penn says he loved the White<lb />Castle script immediately but did<lb />not think there was any way it<lb /><lb />would be made.<lb />Tve had too many friends<lb /><lb />who are filmmakers who told |<lb /><lb />me stories about how their uni-<lb />versally appealing scripts that<lb />happened to have characters-<lb />-that were neither white nor<lb />black--who were always told<lb /><lb />by studios that if they wanted -<lb /><lb />financing, you're going to have<lb />to change the characters to<lb />white or black. Thankfully, I<lb />was completely wrong.?<lb /><lb />Harris thinks the younger<lb />movie-going audience, at which<lb />the H&amp;K? franchise is aimed,<lb />has fewer hang-ups about Asian<lb /><lb />stars than some in Hollywood |<lb /><lb />might think.<lb /><lb />I think it speaks well for ©<lb /><lb />the younger generation that I<lb />don't think they [care] about<lb />the racial makeup of the leads,?<lb /><lb />~ne said. | don t: think they<lb /><lb />even think about that. It just<lb />seems like [the studio] cast<lb /><lb />two hilarious dudes.?<lb /><lb />The producersT gamble<lb />seemed to be a losing one at<lb />first. White Castle didnTt do<lb />well,? Penn said. It was mar-<lb /><lb />-keted in a very traditional way.<lb />It was marketed as an ethnic -<lb /><lb />movie and it was also mar-<lb />keted as a stoner movie. That<lb />immediately categorized it as<lb />something that I think it really<lb />wasn't.?<lb /><lb />Cho remembers that some<lb />older Asian-American viewers<lb />weren't amused.<lb /><lb />Some Asians interpreted<lb />Harold as a stereotypical nerd<lb />role,? he explained. And I<lb />thought of him as an ~Every-<lb />man. This is a kind of cin-<lb /><lb />-ematic paradigm. They. saw<lb /><lb />it through the prism of race,<lb />though younger people are more<lb />easily able to look past that.?<lb />But, just when it seemed<lb />like White Castle was going to<lb /><lb />be H&amp;KTs? last fast food run,.<lb /><lb />word-of-mouth after the DVD<lb /><lb />release kept the buzz alive.<lb />People were buying it;<lb /><lb />giving it to friends,? Penn said.<lb /><lb />f It created this huge wave of<lb /><lb />folks who supported the film<lb />and the characters. ThatTs what<lb />allowed us to do the sequel.?<lb />So, now they are back, once<lb />again with co-star Harris, who<lb />plays a wild-eyed, sex-crazed<lb />version of himself. Along with<lb />his CBS sitcom How I Met<lb />Your Mother,? Harold &amp; Kumar<lb /><lb />has given the 34-year-old actor ©<lb /><lb />credibility with a generation<lb />that barely remembers him in<lb />the title role of the early-T90s<lb />television show Doogie Howser<lb />WEDS<lb /><lb />The White Castle script was<lb />written with him as a character<lb />long before he agreed to be in<lb />the movie.<lb /><lb />Though the two filmsT soph-<lb />omoric sensibilities might raise<lb />concerns about typecasting,<lb />the stars do not seem to having<lb />trouble landing other parts. Cho<lb />appears occasionally as the hip-<lb />hop-spouting accountant Kenny<lb />in Ugly Betty? and plays Sulu<lb />in the upcoming Star Trek movie<lb />directed by J.J. Abrams. Harris<lb />says White Castle helped him nab<lb />How I Met Your Mother.? _<lb /><lb />Penn, who also can be seen<lb /><lb />in FoxTs hit series House,? says<lb /><lb />he never would have been con-<lb />sidered for the dramatic film<lb />The Namesake without KumarTs<lb />cavalier cool.<lb /><lb />.. the -déciding factor 4n<lb />[Namesake with director Mira<lb />Nair] letting me audition was<lb />her 14-year-old son, who was<lb />a ~Harold &amp; KumarT fan, who<lb />every night before bed said,<lb /><lb />Mom, please audition Kal Penn<lb /><lb />23?<lb /><lb />for the part.<lb />So, this means there may be<lb />a third H&amp;K? movie, right?<lb />Harris laughed: Only the<lb />box office will tell.?<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />features@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />These are just a few items that Sunchase is giving away.<lb /><lb />Sign a lease today, and receive a Free Membership and<lb />~» $300 to SamTs Club to purchase your hottest gaming<lb />system, IPOD or movies. _<lb /><lb />&amp;<lb /><lb />heating up, and<lb />Sunchase is the<lb />hoGGes&amp;<lb /><lb />Bel "<lb /><lb />PS3, Wii, Movies, IPOD, Gas, TVTs...<lb /><lb />2201 NE Greenville Blvd, Greenville, NC 27858<lb /><lb />(252) 758"8002 * www.sunchase-ecu.com<lb /><lb />place Go<lb /><lb /></p>
