This year, however, the<lb />combined banquet will keep many of the<lb />same awards, but will focus more on the<lb />most outstanding in each organization<lb />rather than multiple individual awards.<lb /><lb />All student leaders can see other<lb /><lb />~leaders being recognized and can see<lb /><lb />what other students are accomplishing<lb />outside of their own organizations,?<lb />Brown said.<lb />Hopefully, it will spawn some future<lb />collaboration.? |<lb />In addition to the goal of unification,<lb />combining the banquets into one large<lb /><lb />one is a cost-effective strategy, accord-_<lb /><lb />ing to King.<lb />Brown, King, and the student leaders<lb />from many of the campus organizations<lb />discussed making the change last year<lb />and concluded that, rather than spending<lb />at least $15,000 to $24,000 per year on<lb />banquets, they could put together one<lb /><lb />Awards Banquet<lb /><lb />large one for $6000"about one-third<lb />of the original price.<lb /><lb />The combination of the banquets.<lb />also gives Chancellor Steve Ballard the<lb />opportunity to interact with student lead-<lb />ers all on one night, according to Brown.<lb /><lb />There may be four or five [ban-<lb />quets] on one night,? Brown said about<lb />the individual banquets. The change will<lb />make it easier for Ballard to sit down<lb />with all organization leaders in the room<lb />at one time.<lb /><lb />The Center plans to have a Student<lb />Leadership training retreat on the Satur-<lb /><lb />day before the event, April 26, to discuss<lb /><lb />student leadership and what it means, as<lb />well as work toward unification among<lb />the different organizations.<lb /><lb />_ While each of these organizations<lb />do their own jobs and have their own<lb />responsibilities, theres an underlying<lb />principle that theyre all student leaders<lb />first,? Brown said. }<lb /><lb />The Student Leadership Awards<lb />Banquet will be held on April 27 at the<lb />Greenville Hilton.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />news@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Members of The East Carolinian pose together after the Media Board Banquet last year.<lb /><lb /></p>

Mee,<lb /><lb />inion<lb /><lb />Spread the wealth<lb /><lb />Teachers and cops deserve more<lb />than actors and athletes"<lb /><lb />ANDREA ROBERTSON<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Our workforce is made up of numerous careers,<lb />each with a relatively different pay scale. Logically,<lb />one would think that as pay increases the respon-<lb />sibility and importance of a job would increase.<lb />This, however, doesnt seem to be the case. Actors,<lb />musicians and athletes, for the most part, are<lb />the highest paid professionals, with their yearly<lb />incomes ranging into the millions. Its unjustifi-<lb />able that those working to entertain people are<lb />making more money than those educating our<lb />children, protecting us and promoting wellness.<lb /><lb />According to CNN, the average high school<lb />teacher makes approximately $50,872 per year.<lb /><lb />Closely behind a teachers salary is that of a police »<lb /><lb />officer, who will make an average of $48,254, and,<lb />with a dramatic drop, a firefighter will make an<lb />average of $38,165 per year. These people who are<lb />dedicating their lives to the betterment of their<lb />fellow person are receiving average pay for being<lb />our guardians and leaders.<lb /><lb />With gas, food and other living expenses<lb />increasing rapidly, its ridiculous that our educa-<lb />tors and defenders are forced to live paycheck-to-<lb />paycheck, while people who are considered enter-<lb />tainers " no one would have suffered, if the last<lb />Pirates of the Caribbean movie was never released<lb />" are making millions of dollars for work that<lb />doesnt help the advancement of our people.<lb /><lb />The only saving grace for salaries of careers<lb />that require much compassion and time is that of<lb />a medical doctor, whose salary can range from<lb />$80,000 per year into the millions. Doctors, how-<lb />ever, dedicate the majority of their time to their<lb />careers " constantly being on, call " so it seems<lb />almost impossible to even enjoy a salary such as that.<lb /><lb />Soon, no one will want to become a teacher, a<lb />police officer, or a firefighter if the benefits dont<lb />increase. Because it is so hard to convince a person<lb />to become a math teacher, those willing to take<lb />the position are given a salary bonus, an increase<lb />of a mere couple of thousand dollars. Even when<lb />we offer our teachers bonuses, the pay is nowhere<lb />near comparable to that of a celebrity.<lb /><lb />What we need to do is spread the wealth.<lb />Instead of allowing the New York Yankees to have<lb />a payroll of $209 million dollars, lets distribute<lb />more money to the educators, police officers and<lb /><lb />firefighters who are barely making ends meet. |<lb /><lb />Theres absolutely no need for our entertainment<lb /><lb />industry to have so much money, while our educa-_<lb /><lb />tional system barely has enough money to provide<lb />their students with the necessary supplies.<lb /><lb />Americans do hold their entertainment dearly<lb />(who doesnt enjoy a good movie or football<lb />game?), but the vast rewards given to these people<lb />leave those who teach and protect us feeling as if<lb />they are in a thankless job heading nowhere. The<lb />cost of living increases every year, and the per-<lb />sonal feeling one gets when he or she has helped<lb />another person doesnt pay the bills. How much<lb />longer will people do work that benefits mankind,<lb />when one could train to be an actor or an athlete<lb />and make millions of dollars per year?<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at "<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Obama is here<lb /><lb />Bringing change to ECU<lb /><lb />JESSICA DUNLOW<lb />~ OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />I dont know about you guys, but I have yet to<lb /><lb />decide who I am going to vote for. With the semester ©<lb /><lb />coming to a close with its excessive amount of papers<lb />and tests, I just haven't had a chance to catch up on all<lb />the candidates and see who seems to best fit my agenda.<lb />However, I have to say that the only supporters<lb />who seem to be reaching out to gain my interest are<lb />those of Barack Obama. One of my friends has worked<lb />closely trying to organize the event; they're expecting<lb />a line that beats those for football games.<lb />Regardless, Clinton supporters, McCain support-<lb />ers, where are you? Why haven't you tried to grope<lb /><lb />for my vote? I have received numerous Facebook.<lb /><lb />invitations to Barack the Vote,? which takes place at<lb /><lb />the bottom of College Hill on Friday, April 18. They're .<lb /><lb />even offering us transportation to the polls! Now, that<lb />is wellplanned. ",<lb /><lb />Understand that I am neither classified as a liberal<lb />nor a conservative. I tend to float somewhere between<lb />a liberal Republican and a conservative Democrat,<lb />with a tendency to tilt a little more to the left, so this<lb />is a huge decision. All I know is that if I were going<lb />purely on the candidates constituencys attempts to get<lb /><lb />my attention, I'd go for Obama. He seems to have all -<lb /><lb />that it takes .. minus that whole pastor-who-seems-<lb />to-hate-America deal. ,<lb /><lb />Bill Clinton himself visited a school in my home-<lb /><lb />town in support of his wife, but where was Hillary? "gray squirrel.<lb /><lb />Let there be sunshine<lb /><lb />_Its good for you ;<lb /><lb />LISA ENSMINGER<lb />- OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Two. weeks later, and the sun finally shines.<lb />ECU students are out and about enjoying the<lb />rays on their faces, sitting outside of Wright<lb />Plaza or tanning by the pool. The day the sun<lb /><lb />decided to peak out from behind the clouds<lb /><lb />was a day of joy! The dreadful weeks of clouds<lb />and rain took a toll on me, making it hard for<lb /><lb />-_ me to rise out of bed aad start a new day. I<lb />walked to the bus stop with my head down,<lb /><lb />and couldnt seem to smile because the days<lb />continued to be dreary. I hoped for a sunny<lb />day to come, but the weather forecast pre-<lb />dicted clouds and rain day after day. For once<lb />they were right. The difference I felt the day<lb />that the sun finally decided to come out and<lb />have some fun was amazing. What a major<lb />difference a little bit of sunshine can make<lb />for a person.<lb /><lb />Did you know that the sunlight actually<lb />has the ability to bring humans happiness?<lb />The important vitamin that the sunshine<lb />provides, vitamin D, can chemically alter<lb />our mood and prevent depression. It actually<lb />stimulates the pineal gland in the brain and<lb />produces tryptamine, a chemical that improves<lb />mood. Sunlight brightening our day seems like<lb />a given, but did you really know that the sun<lb />has the power to alter our moods?<lb /><lb />The problem. today is that most of the<lb />population lacks vitamin D for many differ-<lb />ent reasons. The media is the main culprit for<lb />relaying the dangers of sunshine. Sunshine<lb />linked to skin cancer has been relevant in the<lb /><lb />media since the 1960s, and is still presented<lb />today. Were bombarded with messages about<lb />covering every inch of our bodies with a high<lb />number of sunscreen and wearing long sleeves,<lb />pants and hats to provide extra protection.<lb /><lb />They seem to forget about the health benefits<lb /><lb />of daily sunshine because our society always<lb />focuses on the negative. Many people are not<lb />receiving the needed amount of vitamin D, and<lb />this can cause problems in the end.<lb /><lb />Scientific evidence states that sunlight and<lb />vitamin D can protect us from various forms<lb />of cancer such as colon, breast, ovary, bladder,<lb />stomach and prostate. Daily sun exposure also<lb />strengthens bones and muscles, and boosts<lb />the immune system. Fifteen minutes a day<lb />" sunscreen free " allows us to absorb the<lb />proper amount of vitamin D for our bodies<lb />to function.<lb /><lb />Now, Im not promoting roasting in the<lb /><lb />sun for six hours every day without using<lb /><lb />protection by any means. Its important to take<lb />good care of your skin and health by knowing<lb />what precautions to take if you are spending<lb />the day in the sun, but its also important to<lb />know that its not healthy to be heliophobic<lb />(afraid of the sun). Its also important to focus<lb />on the benefits because you may prevent other<lb />ailments by just getting a ut he sunshine<lb /><lb />every day.<lb /><lb />So, next time the sun is shining and the<lb />skies are blue, take advantage of the beautiful<lb />day; brighten your spirits, and soak it up for<lb />all its worth!<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Kimberly Bellamy<lb /><lb />One day to study<lb />just isn't enough<lb />Im in college?<lb /><lb />ALEX LAROCCA<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />This week, along with next, is a per-<lb />petual hell for most students in North<lb />Carolina, unless of course you are respon-<lb />sible. It goes without saying that the last<lb />two weeks of a semester in college involves<lb /><lb />_ aton of work unless you lucked out. I have<lb />two research papers " one of which makes<lb />me want to drop out of college " along<lb />with tests and just tidying up so I dont<lb />accidently fail anything. Getting caught<lb />up and finishing up with the semester is<lb />a common thing to do, but most of these<lb />actions never involve the actual final, leav-<lb />ing much of the cramming for the final left<lb />for finals time, or the reading days. Yet, for<lb /><lb />- some particular reason, from my last day of<lb />class to my first exam, I have one day.<lb /><lb />Yes; that is correct. I have one day to<lb />familiarize myself with almost 200 years<lb />of Greek history. This doesnt even include<lb />the exam I have the day after that, which<lb />includes about 300 years of history, nor<lb />does it include a German final.<lb /><lb />Now, before I being throwing up and<lb />passing gas uncontrollably from nervous-<lb /><lb />_ness, I have to wonder why we dont get a<lb />lot of time between the end of the semester<lb />and finals. As I said before, for the majority<lb />of students " and I do mean. all students<lb />everywhere " doing a project the second<lb />you get it is unheard of. No one does this,<lb />and it isnt irresponsible to save the last<lb />two weeks for a lot of this work.<lb /><lb />I dont feel like I have opened the<lb />professors and administrators eyes by<lb />saying this, as I am sure they all did it<lb />during their undergraduate years. No, the<lb />biggest thing that bothers me is the appar-<lb />ent two days given to us to study. I have<lb />obviously been lied to here. Either I don't, -<lb />in fact, have this exam on Wednesday, or<lb />ECU feels they are blessing me with their<lb />one day. I dont even understand if two<lb />days is enough time to study. Three is<lb />probably pushing it, but pean | better<lb />than two.<lb /><lb />As for the rest of this week (I'm writing<lb />this on Tuesday), I have only the demons<lb />that haunt me to keep me company. The<lb />demons I speak of aren't friendly, and,<lb />even with a strict drug plan, they dont<lb />go away until my last exam. So, upon my<lb />last class, on a future Monday, I will walk<lb /><lb />out and say goodbye to my obligations to<lb />class only to have a shrieking cry pulse<lb />through my head. The side effects of that.<lb />will not cause diarrhea and disorientation,<lb />but only loss of sleep and mental anguish.<lb />In one fortunate turn at least, my cries<lb />of pain and misfortune will only last one<lb />week, leaving me plenty of time to erase<lb />everything I learned and accomplished<lb />over the summer.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Sarah Campbell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb /><lb />Natalie Jurgen<lb /><lb />News Editor Asst.
