Calling<lb />and leaving voicemails are things of the past.<lb />New abbreviations of words, slang and short<lb />phrases are used in this somewhat complex new<lb />language.<lb /><lb />I am personally a fan because it allows me<lb />to have a conversation while, for instance, doing<lb />homework or looking something up online. Its<lb />also the only form of communication with friends<lb />I can use while Im at work. 3<lb /><lb />Texting can also allow you to avoid the small<lb />talk. I think this may be the biggest reason my<lb />mom likes texting. She knows she is able to<lb />send me a question as a text and I will answer<lb />her without us having to spend a bunch of time<lb />catching up.<lb /><lb />Also, texting can allow you to hold many<lb />conversations at once. If you need to find out what<lb />all of your friends are doing for the night, you can<lb />ask them all simultaneously in this way. _<lb /><lb />So, with all these benefits, this new lan-<lb />guage? should seem great. But there is a huge<lb />downfall to texting. With written words, you<lb />cannot uSe voice intonation to help relay your<lb />message. I know a couple of different messages<lb />that, without someones voice behind it, can be<lb />interpreted many different ways.<lb /><lb />For example, I need to talk to you.? My salt:<lb />conscious side has me wondering if this person<lb />is upset with something I may have done. My<lb />worrisome self makes me think that maybe this<lb />person is in trouble. Or they may just have a<lb />secret to tell me.<lb /><lb />Someone actually sent me this text the other<lb />day, without any other phrases or hellos. All of<lb />the previous thoughts ran through my mind as I<lb />responded, Whats up??<lb /><lb />_ She needed to know the deadline for some-<lb />thing. Phew!<lb /><lb />As I was talking to my brother about this<lb />article topic, he relayed to me how many small<lb />tiffs or fights he had incurred because of simple<lb />misunderstanding of text messages. Who knew<lb />small phrases could start trouble? So, even though<lb />its a fun way of communicating, it seems like<lb />sometimes a call is really the best bet.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Campus dining<lb />and you<lb /><lb />The more you know<lb /><lb />YAZID FINN<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Say hello to little Billy. Recently, Billy has<lb />been noticing some changes. The Galley has<lb />transformed into an all-you-can-eat eatery.<lb />Todd Dining Hall is undergoing renova-<lb />tions for the fall semester. Why, there is even<lb />talk of a Popeyes Chicken & Biscuits and an<lb />Applebee's down the road! Aramark and Todd<lb />Johnson over at Campus Dining sure are having<lb />loads of fun! Come and join Billy on this swell<lb />adventure as we travel through the halls of<lb />Campus Dining.<lb /><lb />But slow down there, little Billy. Dont go<lb />swiping that OneCard too quickly now! First,<lb />we must ask ourselves a few questions. Why<lb />do your meals count for over seven dollars<lb />whenever you use them at the dining halls,<lb />regardless of your timing, but just over three<lb />dollars at the 360 during lunch hours? Where<lb />do your meals go during spring break when<lb />servers in the British Isles cannot seem to<lb />grasp the idea of Pirate Bucks? How come they<lb />dont roll over to the following week? The fol-<lb />lowing semester?<lb /><lb />Its seven o'clock on a Monday, and Billy<lb />and his buds are hungry. Luckily, since they<lb /><lb />all live on campus, they are part of a legally -<lb /><lb />binding contract that stipulates their having a<lb />meal plan. Good thinking, Billy. You and your<lb />buds have thought ahead! But where to eat,<lb />you may ask? One of you wants Subway while<lb />another is in the mood for quesadillas. Yummy,<lb />but you cant have both.<lb /><lb />After much deliberation, the gang decides<lb />on the Destination 360, and so they set off.<lb />After choosing their meals, they make their<lb />way to the cashier and begin their transac-<lb />tions. ~To Billys astonishment, one of the boys<lb /><lb />is allowed to use two meals at the same time!<lb /><lb />No, Billy, thats no magic; thats a commuter<lb />meal plan!<lb />Thats right, Billy, commuters are allowed<lb /><lb />meal plans that break the laws of physics! |<lb /><lb />These contracts, titled Interstate? meal plans,<lb />allow commuters a set number of meals per<lb />semester to better gauge their investment and<lb />their hunger pains. Why, with even half the<lb />left over money between an I-95 (95 meals)<lb />and a standard 14 Pirate plan devoted to Pirate<lb />Bucks, Billy still has plenty of bread for his<lb />lady friends.<lb /><lb />~ Well, Billy, it looks like you are ready to<lb />start eating on campus! LEWIS<lb />OPINION EDITOR<lb /><lb />In previous columns, I have :<lb />- extolled the virtues of Barack<lb /><lb />Obama and expressed my dissat-<lb />isfaction with Elizabeth Dole...<lb />but dont get the idea Im a left-<lb />winger. Republican candidates<lb />can bring about the same change<lb />at the state level that Demo-<lb />crats can at the federal level.<lb /><lb />The Democratic Party has<lb />dominated this state for decades.<lb />There hasnt been a Republican<lb />in the Governors Mansion<lb />for 16 years (there were only<lb />two in the 20" century); there<lb />has only been one Republican<lb />lieutenant governor since 1896.<lb />Three Republicans currently<lb />sit on the Council of State, also<lb />the first since the 19'" century.<lb /><lb />The Republican Party has only<lb />controlled the state House of<lb />Representatives briefly since<lb /><lb />the 19" century, and never the -<lb /><lb />state Senate.<lb /><lb />Change is good. Sure, you<lb />can probably find some good<lb />Democrats in state government,<lb /><lb />but lately the North Carolina |<lb /><lb />Democratic Party is starting<lb />to look like a Whos Who list of<lb />convicted felons. First there was<lb />Meg Scott Phipps, the former<lb />Commissioner of Agriculture,<lb />and then there was former U.S.<lb />Representative Frank Ballance.<lb />They were followed by former<lb /><lb />_ NC House Speaker Jim Black,<lb /><lb />and most recently by former<lb />NC Representative Thomas<lb /><lb />Wright. Even Gov. Mike Easley |<lb /><lb />cant decide if public reeords<lb />laws,apply to him.<lb /><lb />Republicans at the national<lb />level have been beset with sex<lb />scandals in recent years, but<lb />whats worse? Larry Craig<lb /><lb />trying to get some in a bath-<lb />room, or Jim Black taking money<lb />in a bathroom in exchange for<lb />his vote? I didn't use anti-bacterial soap, my parents<lb /><lb />usually weren't sure where I was until dinner time,<lb />and I didn't have a babysitter watching over me<lb />" that's what my older sister was for. There was no<lb />tracking device in my backpack, my clothes or on my<lb />bike. I was frequently at the pool with only my friends<lb />to chaperone me, and my childhood dog is now con-<lb />sidered highly dangerous? around children.<lb />~ Amazingly, I made it out alive.<lb /><lb />If I was being raised now, I'm sure my parents<lb />would've been locked up by the neighbor s and had<lb />child services called on my family. She cooks by<lb />herself in the kitchen! She could've burnt the kitchen<lb />down or choked on her food! Lock up her mother!?<lb />echoes in my head, reminiscent of Helen Lovejoy on<lb />The Simpsons.?<lb /><lb />Which is why I was so relieved to hear the story<lb />of Lenore Skenazy. Skenazy's nine-year-old son<lb />had been begging her to let him figure out his way<lb />home, and, after several weeks, she relented. With<lb />only $20, a Metrocard and some quarters, Skenazy<lb />dropped her son off at Bloomingdale's and, get this,<lb />he made it home alive. He was even ecstatic over the<lb />amount of independence she allotted to him. Her<lb />story made national news, even snagging her an<lb />appearance on morning talk shows to discuss her<lb />crazy decision. She has now since created a blog<lb />purely for sharing stories on the new style of hyper<lb />parenting? that's become the norm in our society<lb />called Free Range Kids.<lb /><lb />Skenazys story was like a breath of fresh air<lb />to me. After desperately trying to convince the<lb />parents of children I babysit how dangerous it is to<lb />use anti-bacterial products on their children, seeing<lb />kids barely older than seven answer their phones in<lb />grocery stores and watching the number of children<lb />I see on bikes dwindle down to two in the neighbor-<lb />hood, I had almost given up hope on the defendants<lb />style of parenting I grew up with.<lb /><lb />Sadly, I know it was my generation that started<lb />this whole mess of implanted chips, anti-bacterial<lb />everything and Nancy Grace-style exploitation<lb />pieces on the news about all the different types of<lb /><lb />- people who want to kidnap our children. I vividly<lb /><lb />remember being fingerprinted for tracking cards?<lb />in my fourth grade class, complete with little photo- .<lb />graphs with our names that we could carry around<lb />in our (non-existent) wallets. Even at 10 years old,<lb />I couldn't help but think the only good these IDs<lb />could offer would be to identify our dead bodies. We<lb />were also the generation of children whose parents<lb />had non-stop news feeding to them. Networks like<lb />CNN, MSNBC and Fox News first came to frui-<lb />tion during my childhood and so did the practice<lb />of learning about every single abducted child in the<lb />entire country 24/7.<lb /><lb />While sad and horrible, child abductions are<lb />not nearly as rampant as most news channels would<lb />have you believe. Nancy Grace,? To Catch a Preda-<lb />tor,? and 20/20? want us to think that random<lb />strangers are eye-balling all qur kids, watching out<lb />for the moment Mom (or her cell phone) is gone.<lb />Yet statistics show that children are more likely to<lb /><lb />_ be abducted or abused by a family member than<lb /><lb />by a stranger.<lb /><lb />I can't help but think that the only outcome<lb />of all the over-coddling parenting I see on a<lb />daily basis will just be the increasing number of<lb />young adults still living with (or living off of)<lb />their parents. When you're planting a garden, you<lb />harden off? seedlings by shaking them around,<lb />introducing them to uncomfortable temperatures<lb />and watering them less so they'll grow stronger<lb />and live longer. The same basic theory can be<lb />applied to kids. If we dont harden off? todays<lb />generation of kids, what reason will they have to<lb />want to move on without Mom and Dad?<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />sarah Campbell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb />Kimberly Bellamy _ Natalie Jurgen<lb />News Editor Asst. Billy Howerdel offers listeners<lb />an eerie look into his mind and heart with ballads that rise<lb />and tumble so dramatically that at times it tends to leave one ,.<lb />feeling somewhat crushed. This is not to say that the songs<lb />featured on the album are impersonal but quite the opposite;<lb />these songs contain the sort of omnipotent vulnerability that. ~<lb />offer insight into yourself.<lb /><lb />ASHES dIVIDEs debut album. has an insurmountable<lb />level of complexity in every song, but the songs that are great<lb />and the songs that are good on the album are separated by<lb />leaps and bounds.<lb /><lb />While some songs can make goose bumps boil to the<lb />surface of your skin with unparalleled fanaticism, other songs<lb />tend to make you feel that this band is truly the harbinger<lb />of depressed alternative rock masochism. The moody and<lb />sublime tone that remains prevalent throughout the album is<lb />reminiscent of bands such as gothic rock heroes, The Cure.<lb /><lb />The surreal atmosphere that is created through the vari-<lb />ous tones and textures on the album make it brutally heart<lb />wrenching, yet beautifully human. |<lb /><lb />Keep Telling Myself its Alright is an anything but modest<lb />look into another person that can either seem awkwardly<lb />entertaining.to the listener or admittedly obscure.<lb /><lb />The album is sort of like having that obscenely outspoken<lb />friend who has to tell you all his poetic love stories. Even<lb />though it might seem intriguing it can get a little weird at<lb />times if allowed to go unchecked. Even though Billy Howerdels<lb />vocals lack the nail in the coffin effect that ASHES dIVIDEs<lb />music demands, the album is still beyond simply good.*«<lb /><lb />ASHES dIVIDE will be featured this year on the main;<lb />stage of the Project Revolution tour headlined by Linkin Park,*<lb />showcasing Chris Cornell, the Bravery and 10 Years.
