A Prince Charming catches<lb />you when you tumble and instantly falls in love with<lb />you the minute he lays his eyes on you, and then you<lb /><lb />live (I'm sure you can fill in the rest) happily ever<lb /><lb />after! Yes, that's a fantasy and truly not part of the<lb />real world ... but a girl can dream, canTt she?<lb /><lb />I watched Enchanted last night. ItTs a fairytale<lb />love story with a little twist, and I couldn't help but<lb />think about everyone's desire for a perfect lover in<lb />his or her life. Who wouldn't want Patrick Dempsey<lb />falling in love with you and wooing you with his<lb />McDreamy hair and eyes? Scrubs or not, he would<lb />still have me speechless. But, that of course, is me<lb />dreaming, Just like every other girl who watches<lb />any perfect love story on film. We wish that this<lb />one handsome boy would take us for who we are<lb />and never let go.<lb /><lb />Lately people have been talking about their<lb />desires for a perfect fairytale love story in their<lb />lives. They're Just not satisfied with the one they're<lb />dating or with anyone at all. These films portraying<lb />an ideal relationship can fool us for quite some time.<lb />You think your Prince Charming will come run-<lb />ning after you in good times or bad, yet, in reality,<lb />you may be running solo.<lb /><lb />Maybe ITm not just speaking to the ladies out<lb />there, because I know there are some men who<lb />want the perfect relationship too. A girl with Jessica<lb />BielTs body and Angelina JolieTs face wouldn't be a<lb /><lb />bad package, but is this really going to happen? Is_<lb /><lb />Hollywood setting too high of a standard for us<lb />average, normal-looking people? Are we expect-<lb />ing too much out of each other just because a silly<lb /><lb />fairytale or romantic comedy tells us itTs possible? ,<lb /><lb />, If you look at a romantic film, the basic struc-<lb />ture includes boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets<lb />girl. The couple suffers downfalls in the middle of<lb /><lb />_ the plot and they find out their differences during<lb />hard times. Then, magically, they reunite at the end<lb />ofthe story and live happily ever after. This seems<lb />like it could happen in an ordinary relationship.<lb />When you put that ring on your finger and itTs<lb />off to the honeymoon, everything will be perfecto<lb />after that. But, what if the relationship fails. or<lb />suffers after that great expectation of perfection?<lb /><lb />Then there is room for major disappointment and<lb /><lb />confusion as to why it did not work out like in your<lb />favorite movie.<lb /><lb />Love isnTt Just a fairytale or some kind of game;<lb />itTs hard work that no couple should compare to any<lb />other. We canTt expect a writer to create a script for<lb />our relationship so we can live happily ever after.<lb />We need to create our own plot and make it work<lb />for the best. So, what if you run into a few bumps<lb />along the way? The thrilling rollercoaster ride is<lb />well worth more than a boring kiddy ride that never<lb />encounters any excitement. The next time you find<lb />yourself comparing yourself to any Hollywood<lb />films and wishing you were in the charactersT shoes,<lb />remember that their love came from a script and<lb />your love is the real deal.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Can we still<lb />be friends?<lb /><lb />Breaking up doesnTt have to mean<lb /><lb />parting ways<lb /><lb />MARGOT ROGERSON<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />- That nervous, empty-pit-of-your-stomach feel- '<lb /><lb />ing: you are going to introduce your new boyfriend<lb />or girlfriend to your friends. The worry if your Love<lb />will be accepted, overwhelms you. Will they be as<lb />perfect in your friendsT eyes as they-are in yours?<lb /><lb />A by-product of dating someone new is the<lb />ability to meet a lot of new people. You will prob-<lb />ably get equally as attached to your new group of<lb />friends as to the new person you are dating. This<lb />new, inter-mingling of friends should be a positive<lb />aspect of dating someone, but what happens when<lb />the relationship is over?<lb /><lb />How easy is it to maintain friendships with<lb />friends of your ex? This was the topic of conversa-<lb />tion between a couple of friends and me the other<lb />night. For two of us, it was a very relevant topic.<lb /><lb />I think the first thing to do is evaluate how<lb />much these new friends really mean to you, or does<lb />the need to keep them in your life only serve your<lb />intrinsic motives to remain closer to your ex?<lb /><lb />If they are genuine friends that you would like<lb />to keep in your life, it may be more complicated. If<lb /><lb />the latter part of the question is true, realize that.<lb /><lb />you can let those false senses of hope and security<lb />go. I think itTs possible that too many people secretly<lb />guard this motive, but advocate the other.<lb /><lb />On the other hand, if you and your ex dated for<lb />a significant period of time, it may be very hard to<lb />know how to handle those friendships. Few relation-<lb />ships end perfectly amicable; a lot leave residue of<lb />tension and frustration. It might be hard to separate<lb />those feelings from the relationships you have devel-<lb />oped with the mutual friends. It will also be hard for<lb />them to be objective and not pick sides.?<lb /><lb />' However, with a great deal of maturity, I think |<lb /><lb />itTs possible to maintain friendships with your exTs<lb />friends. Certain boundaries would have to be set,<lb />and of course, the approval of the ex would make<lb />things a lot easier. Try to understand if that doesnTt<lb /><lb />happen right away; itTs only natural to have the |<lb /><lb />feeling of they were my friends first.? After the<lb />immediate effects of the break up are gone, finding<lb />a happy medium will not be as hard. One day, you<lb />might even find that your ex can still be your friend.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb /><lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb />ee<lb /><lb />eRe Boa NG INS IN! ~SOME OF<lb /><lb />MILITIA MEMBERS PDS TAVE THE<lb />TONE ARMY PINNED<lb /><lb />ee a<lb /><lb />ERP<lb /><lb />states ao,<lb />Ce ee ae<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate Rants. Originally, as a<lb />freshman, | saw the library as a big building that<lb />I probably would never study in. This was espe-<lb />cially true since I lived 5-10 minutes away in a<lb />dorm. The year after, though, I moved off campus<lb />and began to see the library in a different light.<lb />If I stayed on campus and studied in the library,<lb />then I could get all of my academic work done<lb />in one place and, when I returned home, I could<lb />do whatever I pleased. Today, I mainly see it as.<lb />a Slave shop where students go to be tortured by<lb />the work they should have done a month earlier.<lb />Surrounding all of these opinions, however, lay<lb />the subtle facts of Joyner.<lb /><lb />My first Joyner fact refers to the other resi-<lb />dents of the library. In my many journeys there,<lb />I have noticed that not just students are on the<lb />scene. I realized this a year or so ago when I<lb />walked into the library and saw one particular<lb />individual was always there, but never with any<lb />books or such. One day I made sure to actually<lb />look at his monitor and was puzzled to see World<lb />of Warcraft.? I have since seen him numerous<lb />times, and he is still leveling up. This doesnTt take<lb />into consideration the players of Halo? or Run-<lb />eScape.? Obvious questions arise, such as how can<lb />the computers in the library handle WoW,? and<lb />also why are these people in the library playing<lb /><lb />WoW? in the first place?<lb /><lb />My second fact of Joyner includes the inde<lb />viduals who install and play these games. I<lb />guess overall I donTt mind some of these people<lb />" mainly that guy? who plays WoW? all the time<lb />" but isnTt this disruptive at all? I notice that a<lb />lot of the computers on the first floor are broken<lb />a lot or are just really slow. If only students are<lb />using them, then obviously only Microsoft Word,<lb />Mozilla, IE, and some other school programs<lb />are being used. If you go beyond the realm of<lb />simplistic programs, then maybe you can begin<lb /><lb />to see why some computers are broken or slow<lb />as hell. 3<lb /><lb />Now letTs take into consideration the decibel<lb />level of some of the intruders,? as I call them,<lb />and students. One time, this semester, I was in<lb />the library, and right across from me were two<lb /><lb />ladies? who were definitely not students. They<lb />were loud whenever they intermediately spoke,<lb />but even some students are. The real shocker<lb />came when one answered her cell phone. What<lb />then ensued was 15 minutes of awe from everyone<lb />in the library as she spoke as if to someone who<lb />was trapped in a trash can underwater. Laughing,<lb />yelling and anger were all emotions and sounds<lb />which came from this she-beast until someone<lb />from the library staff asked her to keep it down.<lb />She didnTt, but eventually left.<lb /><lb />I noticed some time ago that the first floor of<lb />Joyner is not a library, but a forum and a public<lb />study. An array of students " mostly girls " will<lb />answer their cell phones or make a call without<lb />the slightest regard to their surroundings. I made<lb />the girl reference because, although, obviously,<lb />guys are sometimes loud too, a guyTs conversa-<lb /><lb />tion is always shorter; there isnTt as much time.<lb /><lb />for aggravation to arise. ThereTs also the problem<lb />of groups in the library. Groups can range from<lb />three to 15 people and in these groups there are<lb />unspoken rights " group rights.? I personally<lb /><lb />challenge these group rights,? as I donTt see why,<lb /><lb />when three or more people get together, they<lb />automatically have to speak louder than anyone<lb />else, donTt do any work, and talk about anything<lb />that has nothing to do with work.<lb /><lb />If we were to do a math equation of the library<lb />it could go something like this: homeless people<lb />+ white trash + bored non-students + students<lb />= Joyner population. I understand itTs probably<lb />some point of a pride for a public university to<lb />have its library as a public one, but I also donTt<lb />attend this university for free. The library wasnTt<lb />just grown out of goodwill, and it isn't maintained<lb />by @ a healthy? attendance.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com .<lb /><lb />during the summer. Our View?<lb /><lb />The lost art<lb />of muSsICc<lb /><lb />Bring back the sounds of<lb />yesteryear<lb /><lb />ANDREA ROBERTSON<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />~ What has happened to music? It saddens<lb />me to know that when ITm a grandparent,<lb />my grandchildren will come across an oldies<lb />station and hear the musical content that<lb />is now popular. I was fortunate enough to<lb />grow up in a musical household, and to be<lb />exposed to many different musical genres,<lb />my favorite being the rock Tn roll of the late<lb />60s and early T70s.<lb /><lb />It isnTt so much the different styles that I<lb />find the most appalling; I enjoy everything<lb />from death metal to rap. I find the lyrics to<lb /><lb />_be horrific for the most part. The major-<lb />ity of popular songs that we find ourselves<lb />singing in the car are blatantly about sex,<lb />drugs, and violence. Very few lyricists seem<lb />to write songs that have any true meaning<lb />behind them, and it seems that those who do<lb />are overlooked. Bands such as Norma Jean,<lb />known primarily for their hard music and<lb />heavy screaming, are not recognized for what<lb />they are when first listened to " a Christian<lb />band. Most people will hear the screaming<lb />and automatically assume that this band is<lb />Satanic or singing about something evil. Even<lb />rappers like Kanye West probably donTt get<lb />the true amount of consideration they deserve<lb />for the quality and meaning of their lyrics.<lb /><lb />The best time for music was in the late<lb />1960s and early 1970s. During this time,<lb />music was in a very, experimental stage.<lb />Heavily influenced by the Vietnam War and<lb />the emergence of the drug culture, music<lb />was changing considerably from that of the<lb />1950s. The changes, however, were definitely<lb />advancement for music. Lyrics went from<lb />being easy-going and carefree to politically<lb />spurred works of art. Neil Young was writing<lb />songs like Ohio,? a song about the Kent State<lb />shooting, instead of songs like This Magic<lb /><lb />_Moment,? as performed by the Drifters.<lb /><lb />- [Tm fully aware that music from this time<lb />period was, like popular music is now, mostly<lb />about violence and drug usage, however, the<lb />time and consideration that went into writing<lb />the lyrics was considerably different in the<lb />past. Unlike lyricists today, those writing the<lb />songs back then didnTt come out and say that<lb />they were going to do drugs; they stated it<lb />in a more poetic way. For example, the song<lb />Horse with No Name? by America, released<lb />in 1972, was about heroin. America, however,<lb />didnTt feel it necessary to spell it out. You can<lb />hardly listen to a song today without hearing<lb />obscene phrases.<lb /><lb />Music doesnTt seem to be as much of an<lb />art form as it was years ago. Songs such as<lb /><lb />_ Touch My Body? by Mariah Carey or She<lb />Wants It? by 50 Cent donTt compare lyri-<lb />cally to Strawberry Fields Forever? by the<lb />Beatles, or Wish You Were Here? by Pink<lb />Floyd. Even though we are in a time of politi-<lb />cal unrest, a time surrounded in controversy,<lb />lyricists donTt seem to want to take the time to<lb />write lyrics that might be a little deeper than<lb />sex [no pun intended]. ItTs an unfortunate<lb /><lb />turn that popular music has taken, and | am ~<lb /><lb />fearful that we might not find our way back.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Sarah Campbell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb />Kimberly Bellamy<lb />News Editor<lb /><lb />Natalie Jurgen<lb />Asst. The film, which started<lb />out as an adventure by three film-<lb />makers from Southern California,<lb />has now turned into a worldwide<lb />movement to end the suffering in<lb />Africa.<lb /><lb />_ The people of Northern Uganda<lb />have been facing a 22-year long war<lb />between their government and the<lb />LRA (the LordTs Resistance Army),<lb />a rebel group that has been the<lb />source of rape, torture, murder and<lb />production of child soldiers.<lb /><lb />When the fighting began in<lb />1987, Ugandans were forced from<lb /><lb />their homes in massive numbers,<lb /><lb />and those who were not killed or<lb />abducted were placed in Inter-<lb />nal Displacement Camps (IDPs)<lb />throughout the country.<lb /><lb />This is where Sunday, an<lb /><lb />orphan, lives. Filmmakers placed<lb />themselves in the camp where<lb />Sunday lives for 10 days to experi-<lb />ence what he experiences everyday.<lb />And what they caught is both mind-<lb />blowing and heart-warming.<lb /><lb />The Americans at the camp<lb />are instructed on what not to bring<lb />including toilet paper, toothpaste,<lb />a toothbrush and more than one<lb />pair of clothes. They are also told<lb />that each family at that IDP only<lb />subsists off of 1,000 shillings per<lb /><lb />week, which is about three U.S.<lb />dollars. Most days, the refugees<lb />spend their entire time preparing<lb />their next meal.<lb /><lb />Only motivated children like<lb />Sunday, who wants to be a doctor,<lb />can attend school. Some children<lb />do not get an education because<lb />they canTt afford the paltry $20 a<lb />month fee.<lb /><lb />Sunday is filmed as saying<lb />that both of his parents died in the<lb />IDP camp, and that his dream of<lb />becoming a doctor would hope-<lb />fully help the extreme suffering<lb />of the Northern Ugandan people.<lb />Of the children at the camp, one of<lb />the filmmakers states, They want<lb />to be visible, but are still kind of<lb />invisible.?<lb /><lb />This conflict in Uganda that has<lb />spanned the last two decades is the<lb />longest lasting in Africa to date.<lb /><lb />This is a war that has been<lb />going on for my entire life,? said<lb /><lb />Ashley Wrenn, president and<lb />founder of the ECU Invisible Chil-<lb /><lb />dren chapter. <lb />Photo by Joos} Braxton<lb /><lb />GodwinTs decision pays off In win<lb /><lb />KELLEN HOLTZMAN<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />Tuesday nightTs sixth inning versus Old Dominion played out like a chess match<lb />for ECU Head Coach Billy Godwin, in the PiratesT 4-2 win over the Monarchs.<lb /><lb />ODU pitcher Ryan Bergh, who.had given.up just.three hits and no. runs. through<lb />5 1/3 i innings, was replaced by lefty Kyle Hald after two Pirates reached base.<lb /><lb />Godwin countered by pinch hitting Jamie Ray in the Designated HitterTs spot for<lb />power-hitting Kyle Roller.<lb /><lb />Ray answered the call with a inka: -run shot over the left field fence to give ECU.<lb /><lb />a 3-2 lead.<lb /><lb />ECU added an insurance run in the seventh to earn the victory.<lb /><lb />_ He [Ray] swung the ball so well in batting practice,? Godwin said of the decision.<lb />I just had a hunch that he was going to go up there and do something well against<lb />that left-hander. It was just great to see our senior leadership go up there and step<lb />up like that on the field and do something positive.?<lb /><lb />The game-winner was Ray's first long ball since May 5 of last year, when he dialed<lb />up a grand slam against Houston.<lb /><lb />It was also RayTs fourth career home run as a pinch hitter.<lb /><lb />ItTs pretty tough,? the Casar, NC native said of his reserve role. You Just have to<lb />make sure you stay in the game. I go in there and take 20 after every inning to make<lb />sure ITm loose just in case, whenever coach needs me.?<lb /><lb />Junior Stephen Batts started the deciding inning with a one-out walk before Corey<lb />Kemp advanced Batts to third base by smacking a deep fly ball to the right, which<lb />eluded the outstretched glove of the ODU right fielder.<lb /><lb />After a disappointing start against NC State last week, freshman Sthil Sowers<lb /><lb />{ECU's Inside Source}<lb /><lb />arks Pirates<lb /><lb />THURSDAY APRIL 10,2008 PAGE Bl<lb /><lb />in time o<lb /><lb />f need<lb /><lb />Senior outfielder Jamie Ray came off the bench and blasted a three-run homer Tuesday night, which proved to be the difference in the PiratesT victory over Old Dominion.<lb /><lb />»<lb /><lb />bounced back with the longest outing of his career. In his third winning effort of<lb /><lb />the season, Sowers made it through 6 1/3 innings and allowed just two runs on six<lb /><lb />hits.<lb /><lb />ITm starting to settle down a little bit,? said Sowers. _ The fifth i inning has<lb />always been a tough one for me to get through. I feel like ITve settled down a lot more<lb />now and being able to get through that fifth is something to take avaniape of ©<lb /><lb />After the career-long outing against the Monarchs, Sowers now owns a 3-2 record<lb />and seems to have solidified his spot as ECU's top midweek starter. )<lb /><lb />Tm his own worst Critic, but'T was really pleased with the effort hie gave me to<lb />get us through six [innings] right there,? Godwin said of the 6-foot-2 North Lenior<lb />High School product. It was really good on his behalf to go out there and do that.<lb />We've got to give him some confidence.?<lb /><lb />ODU opened up the scoring with an RBI groundout off the bat of Chris Keenan<lb />in the second inning.
