<p>The<lb /><lb />pl<lb /><lb />In1on<lb /><lb />Opin<lb /><lb />Nihilism-chic<lb />The danger of apathy<lb /><lb />LARA OLIVER<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />It's 2008, and that means we're gearing up for<lb />another presidential election. On TV, we're bom-<lb />barded with images of candidates at their worst and<lb />pundits trying to manipulate our opinions. In the<lb />real world, you can't walk twenty feet without seeing<lb />Obama, McCain or Clinton stickers on the backs of a<lb />Prius, a Suburban or a Mini Cooper, respectively.<lb /><lb />This election season is being lauded as one of the<lb />most important elections to be held in our nation since<lb />Nixon, and with good reason. Young people are reg-<lb />istering to vote in record numbers, and the primaries<lb />alone are showing just how important these elections<lb />are to the general populace.<lb /><lb />People who felt left out, by previous all-white<lb />male candidates, are finding themselves the focus<lb />of campaigning interest in the first election in<lb />which both a woman and a black man each have an<lb />extremely good chance of being our next president<lb />... not to mention this is the election that will decide<lb />our future in Iraq.<lb /><lb />Yet, there's one group of people completely unin-<lb />terested in the importance of the election or, well,<lb />pretty much anything. The young, jaded-beyond-<lb />their-years nihilists are out in full force this year, and<lb />they don't want you to forget just how much they don't<lb />care what's going on in the world.<lb /><lb />Take, for example, infamous musician DMX.<lb />When asked about Barack Obama and Hillary<lb />Clinton in a recent XXL interview, DMX said he<lb />had absolutely no interest in following the election<lb />because No one person is directly affected by which<lb />president, you know, so what does it matter?? He also<lb />went on to make fun of Obamas name, asking if he<lb />was African and if that was the name his mother gave<lb />him ... apparently never having heard it before.<lb /><lb />But, it isnt just the rich.and famous who want<lb />you to know how much they dont care about the<lb />world; we're lucky enough to have our own groups of<lb />enlightened young people on campus. While you may<lb />think its important to vote in the election, recycle,<lb />protect gun rights, go to church, keep church and<lb />state separate or protect human rights, these fine<lb />folks love to remind you how much it really doesnt<lb />matter.? Were all going to hell in a hand basket<lb />anyway! Why bother?<lb /><lb />What seems to be really messed up about this<lb />whole nihilism-chic is that the people who want you<lb />to know how completely uninterested they are in<lb />the world (to quote The Big Lebowski, Vee believe<lb />in nuzzing.) go to such great lengths to remind<lb />everyone of their apathy.<lb /><lb />From frequently piping up in class about how<lb />nothing matters because we're all going to die<lb />anyway, to reminding random people at parties<lb />about how stupid it is to get involved in politics<lb />because everyone works for the Man.? These kids<lb /><lb />have seen it all, it seems, and they've never even left |<lb /><lb />North Carolina.<lb /><lb />Its not that I have anything against people who<lb /><lb />dont want to get involved. If you don't want your vote<lb />counted, thats your prerogative, but is it really neces-<lb /><lb />sary to be such a snob about it? I can understand the<lb />guys who stand outside Joyner trying to get people to<lb />think like them. I mean, they seem to honestly think<lb />if we dont follow their beliefs, we'll go to hell.<lb /><lb />So, by their logic, they're trying to save us.<lb />What does a nihilist gain by making another person<lb />apathetic? Is there a nihilism heaven where you can<lb />sit around smoking cloves and making fun of people<lb /><lb />_ in other heavens for being nerds? Does your apathy<lb /><lb />karma increase so you might get reborn as a rock star<lb />in the next life and you can make even more people<lb />apathetic through your coolness?<lb /><lb />Sure, we may seem insignificant in the grand<lb />scheme of things and the world can be scary some-<lb />times, but I dont think we're so far gone that things<lb />cant improve. Nihilism is Just another form of giving<lb />up, and I cant imagine what our world would be like<lb />if everyone assumed that nothing can ever change<lb />and theres no goodness left.<lb /><lb />Sure, if we assume the world is rotten it won't<lb />hurt so much when bad things happen, and that can<lb /><lb />_ make life easier to stomach, but isnt it the outrage<lb /><lb />that pushes us to make things better?<lb />Or maybe thats just like, my opinion, man.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Dor te ehune Media Service<lb /><lb />"<lb /><lb />They say the eyes are the windows of the soul,<lb />Freddy. Editor<lb /><lb />lives<lb /><lb />LISA ENSMINGER<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />It is midnight on a Sunday and I am sup-<lb />posed to be writing an English paper that is due<lb />tomorrow ... but Im not exactly doing that when<lb />it should be at the top of my lst. Instead, I am<lb />searching on Facebook, wasting my time away<lb />because I simply do not feel like writing my paper.<lb /><lb />Lets face it, everybody. takes a break from<lb />their work, but its how we take a break that might<lb />be different. Yeah, most of us go chat with our<lb />roommates, get a bite to eat and then sit down<lb />and get back to work, but almost half of us prob-<lb /><lb />ably check Facebook just one more time before we<lb /><lb />get back to studying. We need to see if that one<lb />person wrote us back a comment on our wall or<lb />to check if we were invited to any more events for<lb /><lb />the weekend. Facebook, basically, has just become<lb />an ultimate procrastination tool that has taken<lb /><lb />over most of our lives.<lb /><lb />Its so easy just to log in and get wrapped up<lb />in whats going on in your own little world. You<lb />may find yourself looking at profiles of people you<lb />havent.spoken to since high school, but yet you<lb />still know their life story. News feed informs you<lb />that the most popular high school sweethearts just<lb />ended their relationship. Oh, my! And that girl<lb />who sat next to you in math class? Yes, she is preg-<lb />nant, along with 10 more girls who have become<lb />mothers in the past years and have posted dozens<lb /><lb />_ of pictures of their new, exciting additions.<lb /><lb />and see what events took place during her crazy<lb /><lb />_ weekend. Better yet, you need to see if there are<lb /><lb />any awful, newly-tagged pictures of you that need<lb />to be untagged immediately before any other<lb /><lb />- Facebook stalkers catch your embarrassments<lb /><lb />in action.<lb /><lb />Then, of course, you can waste time by chang-<lb />ing your profile, searching the new bumper stick-<lb />ers, or looking at any other annoying application<lb />provided for you on Facebook. And, quite frankly,<lb />I find these new Facebook applications rather<lb />annoying, but I do know that people are browsing<lb />through these, because I get a new notification<lb />almost every week telling me that I have now<lb />become more popular by being a top friend on<lb />someone's profile. Weird!<lb /><lb />So, bottom line, Facebook is a created mini-<lb />world inside your own world that provides you<lb />with information and trivia about the most<lb />random people on your friend list. Most of you<lb />out there are guilty of Facebook-stalking these<lb />people when you are bored or are avoiding the<lb />next assignment that you just dont want to begin.<lb />I also know that most of you are Facebook fiends<lb />because I walk through the computer lab and see<lb />half of the computer users browsing their profiles<lb />instead of doing their school work. But this is okay<lb />because its part of being a college student. We<lb />need to procrastinate for just five more minutes,<lb />and then we will begin that assignment we should<lb />have started that one week before!<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached ai <lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Of mice and men<lb /><lb />Confessions of a musophobe<lb /><lb />J.D. LEWIS<lb />OPINION EDITOR<lb /><lb />I am a musophobe. Ive Just recently discovered<lb />this. It turns out Ive been one my entire life; I just<lb />wasn't aware there was a label for it. Everyone else<lb />has a label; why shouldn't IP<lb /><lb />Musophobia, I have discovered, is the clinical term<lb />for the fear of mice. Yes, Ill admit it. Im five-eleven,<lb />weigh 2-something-7 pounds, and I am terrified of<lb />something a couple of inches long that weighs a couple<lb />of ounces.at most.<lb /><lb />Apparently I inherited my musophobia from my<lb />mama. She is more terrified of rodents than I am ...<lb />if thats possible. But, of all the wonderful character-<lb />istics she could have and did pass on to me, why did<lb />I have to be the one offspring cursed with a fear that<lb />is So stereotypically feminine? I have a sister, but she<lb />isn't afraid of them. Neither is my wife. My nephew<lb />laughs at me.<lb /><lb />I had a mouse in the house this weekend. I dont<lb />know why they decide to pick on me, but it is the goal<lb />of at least one per year. We're clean. We don't leave food<lb />lying about the house. I know its gotten colder outside<lb />the past few days, but we ran the air conditioner this<lb />weekend. It wasnt that much warmer inside. -<lb /><lb />So much for those Black &amp; Decker ultrasonic<lb /><lb />_ pest-control devices I have plugged into every room.<lb /><lb />Anyone else would have grounds for a lawsuit ... And<lb />I hope that cat thats been hanging around my yard for<lb />days runs out in front of a dump truck. Rest in peace.<lb />Thanks for nothing,<lb /><lb />I was going down the hall when I saw the<lb />intruder scurry across the floor. My heart lodged<lb />in my throat. After not seeing it again for an hour, |<lb />climbed down off the piano to find a trap.<lb /><lb />The trap set, it was just a matter of waiting for<lb />that fateful SNAP! But I cant stand the sight of mice,<lb />even in traps, so that preyed on my mind. I tried to<lb />assure myself the mouse couldn't hurt me, alive or<lb />dead, but when it managed to steal the cheese twice<lb />without setting off the trap, I began looking up the<lb />number to Dial-A-Prayer.<lb /><lb />| My best friend called me, and I told him about<lb />my unwanted visitor. Why dont you grow up?? he<lb />snapped at me, making me feel the size of the mouse.<lb />Youre a grown man, so act like one. It cant hurt<lb />you. Youre 500 times bigger than a mouse, so just<lb />step on it! Its more scared of you than you are of it!?<lb />And then he asked me to come over and kill a spider<lb />in his bathtub. ,<lb /><lb />My buddy did have a point. I'm aman, not a mouse. I<lb />almost died when my car was swept off the road by Hur-<lb />ricane Floyd's floodwaters, but I survived. Ive always<lb />thought that if I could beat that, I can beat anything. I<lb />have a yellow belt in karate and even won a trophy in a<lb />martial arts tournament. My opponent was only seven<lb />years old, but he was a green belt. I have a Bible on my<lb />nightstand, and a .44: Magnum in the drawer beneath<lb />it that would make Clint Eastwood drool. Im ready to<lb />take on anything human or inhuman that might come<lb />my way ... but mice aren't religious, to the best of my<lb />knowledge, and, despite the drunk down the street<lb />Saturday night, theres an ordinance against discharg-<lb />ing a firearm in the city limits.<lb /><lb />So, why am I a musophobe? I guess theres that<lb /><lb />_ whole startle response? factor. They move so fast,<lb /><lb />and | always see them for the first time out the corner<lb />of my eye. Startle responses include changes to blood<lb />pressure, respiration and breathing. In other words, a |<lb />panic attack. I dont like feeling helpless, especially. at<lb />the paws of such an insignificant creature.<lb /><lb />I also don like the fact that they're Just plain nasty.<lb />I'll never understand what the point of pooping every<lb />two steps is, and God only knows what other germs -<lb />are clinging to them as they move over and around<lb />my stuff.<lb /><lb />The mouse is dead now, and there have been no<lb />signs of any playmates. I just thank God that Im<lb />married a woman who isnt a musophobe.<lb /><lb />No doubt some smart aleck is laughing his or her<lb />rear end off right about now at the big man afraid of<lb />a little mouse. Have your laugh; I dont care. I'm a<lb />musophobe, and: Im not ashamed of it. There are a<lb /><lb />lot worse things I could be.<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Sarah Campbell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb />| Natalie Jurgen |<lb /><lb />News Editor: Asst. <lb />PAGE A8<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />21 fails to live~up to expectations<lb /><lb />Proves to be just<lb />another box office ©<lb />- bomb<lb /><lb />CAT POTTER<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />The year 2007 saw its fair<lb />share of impressive movie<lb />releases, with some of the best<lb />being released in the latter part<lb />of the year.<lb /><lb />With such notable and<lb />praise-worthy films kicking<lb />off the new year, it would be<lb />a fair assumption that 2008<lb />would also have a few must<lb /><lb />see? cinematic films.<lb /><lb />Granted the year is not<lb />over by any means, but I per-<lb />sonally have yet to find a movie<lb /><lb />that I wanted to spend nearly ©<lb /><lb />$10 to see in theaters.<lb />Unfortunately, Columbia<lb /><lb />Pictures March 28 release of»<lb /><lb />21 did not impress me the way<lb />that I hoped that it would and<lb />did not help this years reputa-<lb /><lb />_tion for excellent films.<lb />21 features the acting tal- |<lb /><lb />ents of Kevin Spacey (American<lb />Beauty), Jim Sturgess (Across<lb />the Universe) and Kate Bos-<lb />worth (Blue Crush), and was<lb />inspired by the experiences<lb /><lb />of a real MIT student and his<lb />gambling habits.<lb /><lb />The student, Ben Campbell<lb />(Sturgess), is a young math-<lb />ematical whiz who is encour-<lb />aged to partake in a card-<lb />counting scheme in Las Vegas<lb />by professor Micky Rosa.<lb /><lb />~Tempted by the need for<lb /><lb />financial support, he eventu-<lb />ally accepts and the story<lb />begins. es ae<lb /><lb />21 introduces Ben as a<lb />brainy character and eventu-<lb />ally makes him evolve into<lb />this other personality, which is<lb />highly affected by the glam of<lb /><lb />casino life and big winnings.<lb /><lb />A part of this glamorous<lb />lifestyle is where costar Kate<lb />Bosworth comes in as the<lb />movie's sexy teammate, Jill<lb />Taylor.<lb /><lb />Piereais a cCiiemisery<lb />between Jill and Ben that is<lb />alluring, however, parts of<lb />the movie (possibly including<lb />this certain connection) seem<lb />somewhat predictable.<lb /><lb />- Predictability can be used<lb />to describe the conflict in the<lb />movie as well. Certainly, char-<lb /><lb />acters participating in a gam-<lb /><lb />see 21? page AQ<lb /><lb />The Rolling Stones<lb /><lb />Third concert album offers an upbeat twist<lb /><lb />MICHAEL MCANDREW<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />The Rolling Stones, well into their third decade of popularity,<lb />have continued to remain relevant, while producing a new sound<lb />that listeners still feel has the same timbre as the bands initial<lb />songs from their self-titled 1965 debut.<lb /><lb />Following the success of their 2005 tour for 4 Bigger Bang<lb />(one of the highest grossing CDs in U.S. history), the Stones<lb />have decided to capitalize on that success by releasing a third<lb />double concert album which has coincided with a third docu-<lb />mentary, this time by veteran American filmmaker Martin<lb />Scorsese, called Shine .a.Light. The title of the album (of course)<lb />comes from the song off the bands 1972 album Exile on Mazin St.<lb /><lb />RELAY continued<lb />from A6<lb /><lb />Besides the walk around<lb />Dowdy, a few of the activities<lb />that took place at Relay for Life<lb />were bake sales, face painting,<lb />a kissing booth and a cactus<lb />toss.<lb /><lb />I relay for those who dont<lb />get a chance to relay. No one<lb />close to me has ever died of<lb /><lb />cancer, [but] I do it because<lb /><lb />its a positive thing and it gives<lb />me a chance to walk and help<lb />others celebrate, remember and<lb />fight back,? Terrell said, who<lb />participated in the event. Even<lb /><lb />ECU Alumni came to partici- |<lb /><lb />pate in Relay for Life. Wearing<lb />an elaborate sash that stated<lb /><lb />caregiver, Stephanie Parker-"<lb /><lb />Helmkamp, 2006 graduate of<lb />ECU, came to walk on Friday<lb />afternoon. |<lb /><lb />I think its a really good<lb /><lb />thing that ECU has started their<lb />own Relay for Life, and I think<lb /><lb />_theyve done a really great job of<lb /><lb />~putting it together. I hope they<lb />continue it on for the future,?<lb />said Parker-Helmkamp.<lb /><lb />Relay for Life was an over-<lb />night event that raised money<lb />for the American Cancer Society<lb />and-awareness among the com-<lb />munity. It brought students,<lb />teens, kids, parents and survi-<lb />vors together for a great cause.<lb /><lb />Ths writer can be contacted at<lb />features@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />=<lb />a<lb />=<lb />ss<lb />ae<lb />=<lb />~pce<lb />YY)<lb />"<lb />a<lb /><lb />continue<lb /><lb />The Stones have already<lb />produced two double albums<lb />featuring concert performances,<lb />1977's tumultuous Love You Live<lb />and 2004's retrospective album<lb />Live Licks, based on the adjunct<lb />Forty Licks. Scorsese has made<lb />no secret of his admiration for<lb />the band, featuring their music<lb />in his films such as Raging Bull,<lb />Goodfellas, Casino and the most<lb />recent work, The Departed.<lb /><lb />Shine a Light features the<lb />Stones collaborating with a<lb />number of both contemporary<lb />and less-known artists on a<lb />variety of tracks. Loving Cup,?<lb />(also from Exile)is a newer take<lb />on one of their older songs with<lb />Jack White of The White Stripes<lb />doing secendary vocals over<lb />Keith Richards part, though it<lb />is not as evident from the album<lb />that there is a unique collabora-<lb />tion occurring. .<lb /><lb />White and Richards sound<lb />very much like the Mick Jagger<lb />duet on Live With Me? from<lb />1969's Let tt Bleed with pop<lb />artist Christina Aguilera, a<lb />number the listener can clearly<lb />hear the crowd expressing their<lb />appreciation of.<lb /><lb />Given the fact that the Roll-<lb /><lb />ing Stones were originally "<lb /><lb />a cover band for American<lb />rock ~n roll songs in the early<lb />1960s, it is both edifying and<lb /><lb />_ Surprising to see the Stones<lb /><lb />cover Muddy Waters blues<lb /><lb />staple, Champagne and Reefer?.<lb /><lb />with famed, Grammy-win-<lb /><lb />Fast Carolina Univers<lb /><lb />Tomorrow starts here.<lb /><lb />to ~Shine<lb /><lb />ning American rock guitar-<lb />ist, singer and consummate<lb />blues showman, Buddy Guy.<lb /><lb />Guy is cited as an inspira-<lb />tion to Jimmy Hendrix, Eric<lb />Clapton and Jeff Beck; of course<lb />Jagger includes himself as a fan.<lb />It is evident from the film that<lb />Jagger and his band mates are<lb /><lb />genuinely enjoying this collabo- .<lb /><lb />ration on a far more personal<lb />level as artists, and not neces-<lb />sarily as performers as on their<lb />other collaborations.<lb /><lb />Shine a Light, the album,<lb />is a nice mix of The Rolling<lb /><lb />Stones standards and enjoy- -<lb />. able rarities such as the cover<lb />of Champagne? and excellent<lb /><lb />renditions of Shattered? and<lb />Start Me Up,? if viewed as yet<lb />another career retrospective<lb />(there have been at least three<lb />such retrospectives since 1994).<lb />As a film, Shine treads no new<lb />territory, but this is unsurpris-<lb />ing. The Stones are all in their<lb />60's, and most of the songs in<lb />the concert and album are older<lb />than the average reader by a<lb />decade. Still, if the album makes<lb />no significant strides, it is enjoy-<lb />able as a live album featuring<lb />celebrity collaborations, with a<lb />film of the concerts by one of the<lb />great American directors of the<lb />last 50 years.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />features@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />TUESDAY APRIL 8, 2008<lb /><lb />TOP 10 FASHION TRENDS:<lb /><lb />1. Seti: Summons worked the ninth<lb />allowing one hit with one strikeout to seal the win for ECU.<lb /><lb />Southern Miss (20-10, 5-4) starter David Clark allowed eight<lb />runs (seven earned) on 10 hits in four innings of work before being<lb />relieved by Jonathan Johnston in the fourth frame. Johnston worked<lb />1.2 innings allowing three runs on two hits with one walk and one<lb />strikeout. Houston Brown closed out the game going 3.1 innings<lb />allowing just two hits with three strikeouts.<lb /><lb />Offensively the Pirates pounded out 14 hits with five players col-<lb />lecting multiple hits on the afternoon with Harrison Eldridge and<lb />Kyle Roller each recording three base knocks, while Stephen Batts,<lb />Corey Kemp and Whitehead each had two hits. _<lb /><lb />ECU jumped all over Clark in the first inning and took an early<lb />5-0 lead on five hits. Harrison Eldridge led off the game with a single<lb />to center which was followed by a Ryan Wood single to left and a<lb />Stephen Batts single to center field to load the bases for Corey Kemup,<lb />who drove in the first run when he reached on a fielders choice. yie<lb />Roller roped a 2 RBI single through the right side and with one out<lb />Trent Whitehead blooped a single to left plating Kemp and Roller<lb />to cap the scoring.<lb /><lb />After Southern Miss pushed a pair of runs across in the second<lb />to cut into the Pirates lead to 5-2, Whitehead delivered once again<lb />for the Pirates. |<lb /><lb />The true freshman from Washington, NC pushed the Pirates lead<lb />back to five, 7-2, with his third home run of the season, a two-run<lb />shot to right field. With one out in the third, Roller singled to right<lb /><lb />~field and after stealing his third base of the season, trotted home<lb />on Whiteheads homer.<lb />_ The scoring slowed down after the two teams exploded offen-<lb />sively during the first couple of innings. ECU added one run in the<lb />fifth and three more in the sixth, while the Golden Eagles plated<lb />their final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth.<lb /><lb />The series started Saturday afternoon in unusual fashion, as<lb />Southern Miss beat ECU, 6-5, but needed ~13 innings to do so.<lb />A bases loaded wild pitch in the bottom of the 13" scored Keith<lb />Winstead to give the Golden Eagles the victory.<lb /><lb />With the game tied at five in the bottom of the 13th, Southern<lb />Miss Winstead reached on a throwing error advancing to scoring<lb />position with Carson at the plate. Carson laid down a perfect bunt<lb />between the pitchers mound and third base for a single and moving<lb />Winstead over to third. But ECU had its own<lb />troubles at the plate and failed<lb />to produce any run support<lb />for Swann. Marshall finally<lb />broke the deadlock in the top<lb />of the sixth when it put three<lb />runs across with two outs. The<lb />Pirates failed to answer in the<lb />bottom half of the frame, and<lb />after the Herd put three more<lb />runs on the board in the top of<lb />the seventh, ECU went to bat<lb />for last time, trailing 6-0.<lb /><lb />ECU finally got on the<lb />scoreboard in the final inning,<lb />but it was not enough.<lb /><lb />The Pirates scored three<lb />runs before the rally fizzled out<lb />and Marshall took the opening<lb />game by a 6-3 margin.<lb /><lb />Brooke Swann did not pitch<lb />badly, going all seven innings<lb />and striking out eight with only<lb />a pair of walks. Angel Barrella<lb />led the way at the plate, going<lb />3-for-4 with an RBI, but the<lb />Pirates left 13 runners on base<lb />and failed to take advantage of<lb />their numerous scoring oppor-<lb />tunities.<lb /><lb />After a half hour lay-off, the<lb />two teams took the field again<lb />to wrap up the day. ECU tried to answer<lb />in the bottom half of the frame,<lb />junior Jessica Johnson put<lb />one run across with a single<lb />through the hole to left, but<lb />they couldnt quite keep the<lb />rally going and they had to<lb />settle for a two-run deficit.<lb />After struggling a little<lb />through the first, Riggs set-<lb />tled into the game and shut<lb />out the potent Marshall lineup<lb />for the next three innings.<lb />The Pirates managed to<lb />tie the score in the bottom of<lb />the third when Johnson again<lb />knocked in arun and another<lb />scored after a pick off attempt<lb /><lb />by the catcher down to third<lb /><lb />went into left field. The next<lb />two batters were put out to<lb />end the inning, but the Pirates<lb />had tied the score at 3.<lb /><lb />In the top of the fifth<lb />Marshall again took the lead<lb />through a two run homer to<lb />center off Riggs. ECU failed<lb /><lb />to answer in its final three<lb />trips to the plate and the<lb />game ended 5-3 in favor of<lb />the Herd.<lb /><lb />Johnson led the team at<lb />the plate with two hits and<lb />two RBIs. Christina Merrida<lb />and Christen Aona each had<lb />two hits as well. Riggs went<lb />five innings and gave up five<lb />runs on six hits while strik-<lb />ing out two and giving three<lb />free passes. Swann entered<lb />the game in the sixth and<lb />faced the final seven batters,<lb />allowing no runs or hits while<lb />striking out one and walk-<lb />ing one. ;<lb /><lb />The Pirates will be back<lb />in action Wednesday at home<lb />against UNC Wilmington.<lb />Game time is scheduled for<lb />4 p.m.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />.<lb /><lb />Photo by Jessi Braxton?<lb /><lb />3.
