According to the Web site, 35.3 mil-<lb />lion Americans age 12 and older have used cocaine<lb />at least once in their lives. :<lb /><lb />McMillan also shared a personal story about her<lb />fathers struggle with drugs and the effect it had on<lb />his life.<lb /><lb />The documentary connected viewers with the<lb />reality of drug usage by showing people smoking<lb />cocaine, and talking about how the addiction has<lb />affected their lives.<lb /><lb />The people featured in the movie told stories about<lb />how they lost material possessions as well as friends and<lb />family during their battle with the addiction to cocaine.<lb /><lb />Unfortunately, some of the users also admitted<lb />that they live from day to day thinking of ways to<lb />get money for more drugs and don't plan to quit<lb />smoking. <p>Inlion "<lb /><lb />Its only a pile<lb />of plastic!<lb /><lb />How its harmful to you and the.<lb />environment<lb /><lb />LISA ENSMINGER<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />We live in a land of trash mostly made up of<lb />plastic that is slowly but surely becoming harmful<lb />to our environment. One hundred million tons of<lb />plastic are produced in the world each year, and<lb />the number is rising. Its not just plastic bags from<lb />grocery stores that are causing problems, but also<lb />every other item made of plastic: bottles, packaging,<lb />dinnerware, CDs, toys, household, items ... the list<lb />goes on and on. Almost everything we use today is<lb />composed of plastic. So, why would this be such a<lb />problem? Plastic is anon-biodegradable product. In<lb />simpler terms, it takes hundreds or even millions of<lb />years for many plastic products to degrade.<lb /><lb />One of the main concerns with plastic is the<lb /><lb />problem in the ocean systems. As we speak, there '<lb /><lb />are trash patches almost three times the size of<lb />Texas spread across the worlds oceans. A major pile<lb />of trash was only recently discovered right in the<lb /><lb />middle of the Pacific Ocean. How is this normal, and |<lb /><lb />how can this be safe for our environment? This is<lb />disgusting, yet kind of scary if you think about it.<lb /><lb />So, how did this trash pile come about in the<lb />middle of the ocean? Litter that is left on the<lb />coastlines, especially in California, is swept out<lb />into the ocean by currents. The trash then gets<lb />dropped into the middle of the ocean due to the<lb />way the winds move the currents. Not only is there<lb />trash left on the earth by the human population,<lb />but spills from ships cargo and oil platforms also<lb />contribute to this major problem. Its the earths<lb />natural phenomena that place the trash piles, but<lb />its the human pollution and carelessness that<lb />creates this unnatural pile of garbage.<lb /><lb />Some might ask again why this would. cause<lb /><lb />any problems. As mentioned before, plastic takes |<lb /><lb />forever to degrade; that leaves plastic floating in<lb />the ocean, harming the surrounding environment.<lb />Plastic increases the levels of toxin intake in the<lb />surrounding water. Sea life and birds mistake par-<lb />ticles of plastic for food and then ingest harmful<lb /><lb />chemicals that will not digest, leaving them to die |<lb /><lb />due to lack of nutrients and ingestion of unnatural<lb />products. This disturbs the natural food web and<lb />impacts human health. Not only is plastic causing<lb />litter in the earths environment, it also contains<lb />hormone disruptors that can affect human health<lb />just by using these products. "<lb /><lb />So, bottom line, plastic is causing many prob-<lb />lems in the earths systems and surrounding popu-<lb />lation. The only solution to this ongoing problem<lb /><lb />is for companies to stop producing as many plastic "<lb /><lb />products, and for us to change our consumption<lb />habits. Not only are you harming yourself: by<lb />drinking out of plastic water bottles every day,<lb />but you are also harming the environment around<lb />you when you throw them away. Next time you<lb />consider getting a pop out of the vending machine,<lb />discard it properly by recycling, or start buying<lb />glass bottles rather than plastic. Every little bit<lb />counts in making the earth a better place.<lb />Sources from this article include<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />-opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Sit still, 18-<lb />Wheeler, sit still<lb /><lb />In support of striking truckers<lb /><lb />J.D. LEWIS<lb />OPINION EDITOR<lb /><lb />This week, independent truck drivers from<lb />across the nation are striking, or threatening to<lb />strike in protest of rising fuel prices, and I don't<lb />blame them one bit. It takes the average Joe $30-<lb />$40 dollars to fill up a car with gas; it now costs<lb />a trucker $1,000 or more to fill up his truck with<lb />diesel. This rape at the gas pump has got to stop,<lb />and if the striking truckers can hit the oil execu-<lb />tives in their wallets, then I say amen, brothers.<lb /><lb />Oil company presidents and CEOs sat before<lb />Congress Tuesday, bemoaning the possibility<lb />of losing billions of dollars in tax breaks in the<lb />face of record profits. However, upon entering col-<lb />lege many of us discovered that we were entirely<lb />unprepared to make life-altering decisions.<lb />Noone ever made us seriously consider the<lb /><lb />amount of time it would take to discover ones ©<lb /><lb />ideal career choice or the amount of hard work it<lb />takes to obtain a degree and find a job.<lb />Career choices have become extremely spe-<lb /><lb />cialized, which causes a problem for a generation:<lb /><lb />that appears to be too unprepared to make tough<lb />decisions about life.<lb /><lb />Higher education begins for most at the age<lb />of 18 (youre an adult, but no one wants to treat<lb />you like one). More than likely, youre thrown<lb />into a different city largely populated by people<lb />you have never met before, and you're expected<lb />to decide almost instantly what you want to do<lb />with the rest of your life.<lb /><lb />Its true that you dont declare your major<lb />during your first years of college, but it is ideal<lb />to pick a course of study. Youre handed off to<lb />an undergraduate advisor, who coaches you into<lb />entering the major you hope is the right choice,<lb /><lb />just to discover you probably dont want to Pag ,<lb /><lb />what you initially thought.<lb />The problem arises in the school system.<lb /><lb />Before college, you had very few choices. High<lb /><lb />school merely required a person to decide whether<lb /><lb />_ he wanted to pass or fail. Because we don't learn<lb /><lb />to make difficult decisions before we are forced<lb />into the real world, we make hasty decisions that<lb />either lead to us changing our major or ending<lb />up in a career that we dont like.<lb /><lb />In high school, due to the lack of specialized<lb />classes that could better direct us to the career<lb />choice best suited for us or to the lack of serious<lb />decision-making in our early to late teens, college<lb />students are slowly becoming Van Wilders.?<lb /><lb />Its not uncommon to finda fifth or sixth-year<lb /><lb />senior, and most of the time the reason for being<lb /><lb />in college longer is because we haven't figured out<lb />what we want to do with our lives.<lb /><lb />Choices are good, but we need to be more<lb />prepared to make them. Once in college, you no<lb />longer have someone directing you on the path<lb /><lb />that you should take, and we need to be more.<lb /><lb />used to deciding things for ourselves. I feel there<lb />should be some:amendments to the high school<lb />curriculum, or to the college requirement of pick-<lb />ing your course of study so quickly.<lb /><lb />Perhaps the ASVAB Career Exploration Test<lb />should be more than just an option; perhaps stu-<lb />dents should be required to take this test before<lb />graduating high school. Even though high school<lb />kids get tired of standardized testing, it could at<lb />least help our students gain more insight into what<lb />major they should aim for in college.<lb /><lb />With so many different paths ones life can<lb />take just based on the choices made as a young<lb />adult, it would be beneficial to our youth if they<lb />were given more opportunities to learn of the<lb />future, and were allowed to make more choices<lb />for themselves before entering college.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />A loud<lb />buzzing noise<lb /><lb />A story from Bate Building<lb /><lb />JESSICA DUNLOW<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />So, it was an average Tuesday, walking to<lb />class in the sunlight, wearing a cute outfit,<lb />etc. I get to class in Bate about 10 minutes<lb />early as usual, and begin to chat with the<lb />people sitting around me. Suddenly, a loud<lb />buzzing noise filled the hallways.<lb /><lb />Now, most of us. had not heard this par-<lb />ticular noise since high school, so we just<lb />looked around at each other, dazed as to what<lb />it was and at what we were supposed to do.<lb />The professor was not even sure, because no<lb />one had informed her of evacuation proce-<lb />dures for this fire? alarm! As we all laughed<lb />and joked about some idiot pulling the alarm,<lb />she looked into the hallway and found that<lb />other professors and students were wander-<lb />ing toward the door, so we too meandered<lb />that way.<lb /><lb />It is appalling to think that the university<lb />has not prepared us for the proper ways to<lb />evacuate classroom buildings. I mean, I sup-<lb />pose the administration assumes that, since<lb />we-are all adults, we should know what to<lb />do and where to go. This is not necessarily<lb />true. We do seem to know how to get out<lb />of the residence halls with ease when the<lb />alarm goes off, which happens frequently.<lb />We take the stairs as quickly as possible<lb />and try not to push anyone over during our<lb />descent ... although there are exceptions to<lb />this assumption. For instance, does anyone<lb />remember the girl from the Clement fire that<lb />was just not informed of what the loud noise<lb />meant? Scary.<lb /><lb />Anyway, it surprised me how unsafe I<lb />began to feel after all of the students in 9:30<lb />classes in Bate were standing outside just<lb />continuing to joke about canceled classes<lb />and an extra free hour, until the three fire<lb />trucks arrived (even the pretty purple and<lb />gold one!). One firefighter had an axe in<lb />hand, ready to destroy anything that got in<lb /><lb />the way of defeating a fire.<lb /><lb />So, I propose that students be taught the<lb />appropriate escape plans for situations like<lb />this. I know we all hated the monotony of<lb />monthly drills in grade school, but perhaps<lb />something like this should be implemented.<lb />Students wandering aimlessly through the<lb />hallways can cause a major hazard if a fire<lb />actually occurs. I also know that this will<lb />take a small part of our classroom time out,<lb />but I feel it is important for our own knowl-<lb />edge and safety!<lb /><lb />The story ends fine. The firefighters went<lb />up to the door and, after about 15 minutes,<lb />allowed us back into the building. We duti-<lb />fully went back to our classes and proceeded "<lb />to begin what was an average Tuesday ...<lb />until the alarm went off again. Now, for<lb />those of you who have not had to be evacu-<lb />ated from a classroom building, its scarier<lb />than it sounds, because we were all stand-<lb />ing so close to the building that if there had<lb />been an explosion, we would have all been<lb />consumed. Fires are more common than you<lb />would think, and we do have a fantastic fire<lb />department and police force keeping watch<lb />over us, but look deep down. Do you really<lb />feel safe? Do you know the quickest escape<lb />routes for your classroom buildings? How far<lb />do we stand from the building? How fast do<lb />we need to evacuate? Exactly.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Sarah Campbell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb /><lb />Natalie Jurgen<lb />Asst. Her story gets even<lb />more desperate after the day care<lb />center refuses to keep Brenda's<lb />daughter anymore, and the only<lb />thing left in her house to eat is a<lb />cup of Quaker oatmeal.<lb /><lb />When Brenda finds out that<lb />her estranged father has died,<lb />she travels from big-city Chi-<lb />cago to a small, rural town in<lb />Georgia for his funeral. While<lb />there, she meets the brothers<lb />and sisters she never met, and<lb />who never knew she existed,<lb />the fun-loving yet ridiculous<lb />Brown family. From there,<lb /><lb />her life changes from that of<lb />a single, financially-unstable<lb />mother, to a woman surrounded<lb />by ahelpful family. -<lb /><lb />Not only does Brenda find<lb />familial support, she meets a<lb />retired professional basketball<lb />player who wants to help her<lb />son with his collegiate career.<lb />As per-Perry-usual, Brenda<lb />falls in love with him. Meet The<lb />Browns again features the man<lb />that every woman wants. |<lb /><lb />Perry delivers lots of laughs<lb />in this film, although the fact<lb />that Madea only appears in one<lb />scene of the film is a disappoint-<lb />ment. Madea, the elderly jail-<lb />bird who frequents the majority<lb />of Perrys plays, is usually the<lb />crowd-drawer to Perry's pro-<lb />ductions. The movie could have<lb /><lb />used more of the side-splitting<lb />Madea character, but Perrys<lb />rendition of multiple family<lb />crises in Meet The Browns still<lb />strikes a chord with audiences<lb />all over America.<lb /><lb />Meet The Browns isa<lb />must-see film for families, cou-<lb />ples and friends and leaves<lb />crowds begging for more. <lb />{ECU's Inside Source}<lb /><lb />THURSDAY APRIL 3, 2008<lb /><lb />PAGE Bl<lb /><lb />Pirates lose rivalry game by one run, again<lb /><lb />Senior Corey Kemp blasted his eighth home run of the season against the Wolfpack Tuesday night.<lb /><lb />a<lb />iS<lb />x<lb />&amp;<lb />ea)<lb />H<lb />?<lb />©<lb />"<lb /><lb />2<lb />2<lb />=<lb />3 &amp;<lb /><lb />ECUs late rally falls<lb />short<lb /><lb />RONNIE WOODWARD<lb />~ SPORTS EDITOR<lb /><lb />A baseball game between<lb />ECU and NC State is destined<lb />to be decided by one run these<lb />days.<lb /><lb />Even with the Wolfpack in<lb />control for most of the game<lb />Tuesday night at Clark-LeClair<lb />Stadium, ECU made a late rally,<lb />forcing another dramatic ending<lb />to a baseball game between the<lb />two rivals.<lb /><lb />However, ECUs late come-<lb />back fell just short, and the<lb />Pirates lost 4-3, making it four-<lb />straight one-run losses to the<lb />Wolfpack.<lb /><lb />It was another classic<lb />matchup against NC State,? said<lb />ECU coach Billy Godwin. We<lb />came out on the losing end which<lb /><lb />1s certainly disappointing, espe-<lb /><lb />cially with the way it ended.?<lb />Each of the last six games<lb />between the two teams have now<lb />been decided by one run, with<lb />ECU only winning one of them.<lb />. The last time the Pirates<lb />(18-8) beat the Wolfpack was on<lb />April 12, 2006, a 2-1, 13-inning<lb /><lb />victory in Greenville.<lb /><lb />It seems like every one of<lb />them is decided by one run or<lb />extra innings,? Wolfpack coach<lb />Elliot Avent said of the series.<lb />Its great for college athletics<lb />and great for college baseball.?<lb /><lb />Down 4-1 in the eighth inning<lb /><lb />on Tuesday, ECU catcher Corey<lb /><lb />Kemp ignited the Pirates offense<lb />with a two-run home run into<lb />right field. |<lb /><lb />But, NC State (16-9) brought<lb />in left-handed reliever Drew<lb />Taylor, who got the next three<lb />ECU batters to ground out,<lb />ending the late ECU rally.<lb /><lb />I thought our guys didnt<lb />quit and Im proud of that,?<lb />Godwin said. Corey Kemp<lb />stepped up and energized us at a<lb /><lb />key time, which got us into.strik-<lb /><lb />ing distance.<lb />There were some really<lb /><lb />positive things that came out of<lb />tonights performance, except<lb />that we got the loss.?<lb /><lb />In the ninth, Wolfpack closer<lb />Jimmy Gillheeney retired ECUs<lb />first two batters before Harrison<lb />Eldridge drew a two-out walk.<lb /><lb />However, Gillheeney abruptly<lb />ended the game by picking off<lb />Eldridge, notching his seventh<lb />save of the season.<lb /><lb />ECU rallies that ended<lb />quickly were seen numero<lb />times by the 5,105 fans in atten-<lb />dance, which was the fifth-largest<lb />crowd in ECU baseball history.<lb /><lb />The Pirates had at least one<lb />runner reach third base in four<lb />of the first five innings, but<lb />only managed one run during<lb />that span, which led to the early<lb />deficit.<lb /><lb />Eldridge led off the first<lb />inning with a single and eventu-<lb />ally reached third base, but NC<lb />States Eryk McConnell would<lb />not allow him to score, setting the<lb />tone for the rest of the game.<lb /><lb />The next inning, ECUs first<lb />two batters each reached safely.<lb />but McConnell retired the. next<lb />three, leaving the game scoreless<lb />once again.<lb /><lb />Then trailing 2-1 in the fifth,<lb />ECU loaded the bases with two<lb />outs, but MeConnell retired the<lb />Pirates designated hitter, Kyle<lb />Roller, in his last batter faced of<lb />the game. |<lb /><lb />We have a good pitcl<lb />staff and they are starting to<lb />understand their roles and what<lb />they need to do in certain situa-<lb />tions,? said Avent. Our pitchers<lb />did a great job, especially against<lb />a great hitting ball club like they<lb />have.?<lb /><lb />McConnell is one of the<lb />Wolfpacks weekend starters,<lb />but since NC States Sunday<lb />game with North Carolina was<lb />postponed due to weather, his<lb />scheduled start was pushed back<lb />one game.<lb /><lb />The fifth-year senior had no<lb /><lb />Ws<lb /><lb />40<lb /><lb />74<lb />noe<lb />$ony<lb /><lb />-trouble adjusting..<lb /><lb />He pitched five strong innings,<lb />allowing one run and striking<lb /><lb />aT ase BASEBALL page B5<lb /><lb />More experience could mean better results<lb /><lb />Secondary will be key<lb /><lb />KELLEN HOLTZMAN<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />With the 2008 spring foot-<lb />ball game just around the corner,<lb />the anticipation for ECU football<lb />is nearing a fever pitch. And with<lb />anticipation comes expectations<lb />that are at perhaps an all-time<lb />high. a<lb /><lb />ECU Head Coach Skip Holtz<lb />recognizes one glaring weakness<lb />from last years team that needs<lb />to be corrected in order to meet<lb />those expectations. The Pirates<lb />-must improve a passing defense<lb />that ranked ninth in C-USA and<lb />114*" in the nation.<lb /><lb />It will be a long year if they<lb />dont improve a bunch; if you look<lb />at where we are from our num-<lb />bers a year ago, Holtz said. We<lb />had a lot of guys that didn't play<lb />a lot going into last year.?<lb /><lb />The inexperience Holtz refers<lb />to can be traced back to 2006,<lb />when ECU lost three starters<lb />from a very talented defensive<lb />backfield. |<lb /><lb />Led by seniors Kasey Ross,<lb /><lb />Jamar Flournoy and Pierre<lb />Parker, the Pirates 2006 second-<lb />ary was arguably the trademark<lb />of that team. Ross and company<lb />routinely forced timely turnovers<lb />to give the Pirates the edge'in<lb />close games. 3<lb /><lb />In 2007, ECU struggled to<lb />adjust to the loss of the unruffled<lb />veterans and the scoreboard pro-<lb />vided the evidence.<lb /><lb />The Pirates inability to<lb /><lb />defend the pass often put the<lb />onus on the offense to ~convert in<lb />high scoring shootouts.<lb /><lb />The Pirates gave up 30.4<lb />~points per game" putting them<lb />fourth in C-USA, a league noted<lb />for its lack of defense. The lofty<lb />stat also ranked a lowly 83" in<lb />the nation. ,<lb /><lb />Statistics, however, can be<lb />misleading.<lb /><lb />The numbers may not side<lb />with ECU, but with a host of<lb />experienced players returning for<lb />2008, the secondarys depth and<lb />talent are likely to shine through<lb /><lb />Photo by Robyn McLawhorn<lb /><lb />és<lb /><lb />this season.<lb /><lb />Secondary coach Rick Smith<lb />is confident that experience will<lb />be the key. to sparking improve-<lb /><lb />~ment.<lb /><lb />We were pretty good last<lb />year,? Smith said of his teams<lb />talent level. Im excited about<lb />this year because all those kids<lb />that were young last year, got<lb />some playing experience behind<lb />them.? 3<lb /><lb />Free safety and All-C-USA<lb /><lb />second-teamer Van Eskridge<lb />echoed his coachs sentiments.<lb />We've got pretty much<lb />everyone coming back,? said<lb />Eskridge, who tallied a team-<lb />high 104 tackles in 2007. We've<lb /><lb />got guys that played a lot of snaps<lb />last year so instead of learning<lb />on the fly, were just reviewing<lb />things now. ...We should be<lb />able to come in and play fast,<lb />play with more maturity and<lb />eliminate a lot of the mistakes<lb />we made last year.? :<lb /><lb />Outgoing cornerback Travi<lb />Williams is the only starter that<lb />must be replaced.<lb /><lb />Senior Leon Best will fill the<lb />void by returhing to corner after<lb />moving to safety last season.<lb /><lb />Herman [Best] is a senior<lb />and hes played both positions,?<lb />said Smith. Hes just. a great<lb />young man. Hes always where<lb />hes supposed to be. Hes the<lb /><lb />most dependable kid out of those<lb />older guys.?<lb /><lb />As of now,<lb />backed up at corner by sopho-<lb />more Darryl Reynolds, who saw<lb /><lb />action in nine games as a true<lb /><lb />freshman last season. Emanuel<lb />Davis, who both Smith and<lb />Holtz cited as a player to watch,<lb />will provide depth at weak cor-<lb />nerback. -<lb /><lb />Senior Jerek Hewett will<lb />man the other corner spot,<lb />backed-up by sophomore Travis<lb />Simmons and redshirt freshman<lb />Derek Blacknall.<lb /><lb />Eskridge, a junior, has the<lb />free safety position locked down<lb />and will be backed up by sopho-<lb /><lb />Best will be.<lb /><lb />|<lb />North Carolina receiver Brandon Tate gets behind the ECU secondary for a long touchdown reception against the Pirates last season.<lb /><lb />more Dekota Marshall and<lb />redshirt freshman Julian Carter.<lb />Marshall saw action in all 13<lb />games last season, primarily at<lb />corner.<lb /><lb />Marshall credits Eskridge in<lb />assisting to make the transition<lb />go smoothly. |<lb /><lb />With me moving to free<lb />safety, he [Eskridge] helped me<lb />out a lot with learning the plays,<lb />said the Jacksonville native.<lb />You know as a corner, you'll<lb />either go man or drop back but<lb />at free safety youre doing a lot<lb />of different things.?<lb /><lb />see FOOTBALL page B3<lb /><lb /></p>

She was ahead of<lb />me a couple years and now shes<lb />the pitching coach. She knows<lb /><lb />my motion and has been a really<lb /><lb />big help, especially now.?<lb /><lb />The marquee characteristic of<lb />all successful athletes is the drive<lb />to continually work on their skills<lb />and try to improve as a player, a<lb />fact not lost by Swann.<lb /><lb />_ Every day when we work<lb />out in the bullpen we set goals<lb />for the day and we try to achieve<lb />those goals by the end of each<lb />workout, said Swann.<lb /><lb />When asked what shes<lb />working on when she sets those<lb />goals, she replied like any elite<lb /><lb />athlete would, saying, Every- |<lb /><lb />thing.
