From a modest teacherTs training school to a dynamic, national research university,<lb /><lb />ECU has a colorful history.<lb /><lb />© On March 8", 1907 East Carolina Teachers Training School was chartered.<lb />¢ This charter was for a school that would train white males and females to become teachers in the North<lb /><lb />Carolina school system.<lb /><lb />¢ In May of 1907 a poll was taken to see whether Pitt County growl pass a $50,000 bond for the eencel At<lb />this poll, a local farmer, Haywood Dail, took the ballots that had been marked with No? and chewed<lb />them up and put them in his pocket, that way the bond was sure to pass.<lb /><lb />e The proposal for the bill passed, which meant that Greenville would be proposed as the home of the East<lb /><lb />Carolina Teachers Training School<lb /><lb />¢ Greenville, along with 7 other cities presented ProeeN Se to the State Board of adluachts as Perspective<lb /><lb />homes for the ECTTS on June 5'*<lb /><lb />e On July 11" Greenville was declared to be the site of this ee with the approval of nearly the entire<lb /><lb />state.<lb /><lb />4h JUly.OF 1908, arsed bheaies ceremonies were ~held where the first four buildings were to be located.<lb />¢ Inthe summer of 1909 faculty were hired for the start of classes.<lb />¢ October 5, 1909 was the first day for enrollment"there were 104 women, 19 men, and 11 faculty<lb /><lb />¢ June 11", 1911 was the graduation date of the first class<lb /><lb />We began the centennial celebration with a birthday party in March 2007<lb />to mark the 100th anniversary of the charter for our school.<lb /><lb />_ Centennial celebrations will continue through 2009, commemorating<lb />the two-year span of the schoolTs inception, building, and first day of class.<lb /><lb />Did you know.....?<lb />Fun Facts of ECU<lb /><lb />e In 1926, a point system was put into place to earn a letter sweater"some ways to earn points included<lb />shampooing your hair 2 times a month earned 1 point, eating 3 meals a day earned | point per week, an<lb />original song or yell earned 15 Poinis-- 490 points were required to get a letter<lb /><lb />e In the fall of 1923, enrollment was 516<lb /><lb />¢ January 12, 1932 the men's basketball team, The Teachers, was formed ane won their first anne against<lb /><lb />Campbell College<lb /><lb />¢ In 1932 Henry Oglesby became the first male to graduate from ECTC ©<lb />¢ 1947-menTs enrollment exceeds women's enrollment for the first time<lb /><lb />1948-Detachment 600 of Air Force ROTC was created<lb />1960-Aycock was the first dorm built on College Hill<lb /><lb />Cotten<lb />1846-1929.<lb /><lb />Sallie Southall Cotten born June 13, 1846 was an advocate<lb />of educational opportunities for women in Eastern, NC.<lb /><lb />She was the founder of the N.C. Most endearingly, those who loved and shared her<lb />passion for education knew Sallie as Mother Cotton?.<lb />She successfully campaigned for women to be granted<lb />the right to serve on public school boards. She died May<lb />4, 1929 in Massachusetts and is buried in a family plot i In<lb />Greenville. Cotten Dormitory is named after her, which is<lb />one of two in the state. THEYRE ALL<lb />STARTING 10 LOOK<lb /><lb />a chance<lb /><lb />Some thoughts on war<lb /><lb />ANDREA ROBERTSON<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />The 1960s. Emerging from the peaceful and<lb />idealistic time of the 50s, America was plunged<lb />into the depths of free love and the mayhem of<lb />Vietnam, and young men and women were doing<lb />everything in their power to promote peace all<lb />over the nation. I feel that they had the right<lb />idea. .<lb /><lb />While dancing to Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin,<lb />Jimi Hendrix and John Lennon, the youth of<lb />America tried to show that loving one another was<lb />not a difficult task. Labeled hippies,? they spoke<lb /><lb />out against the war and against the prejudices in.<lb /><lb />our own country, and tried to show others that<lb /><lb />the only things you need to be happy are to love.<lb /><lb />and be loved by your fellow man.<lb /><lb />Once again we find our country in the midst<lb />of war, and people forgetting the importance of<lb />acceptance and love. After experiencing the grief<lb />of previous wars, why are Americans so apt to<lb />promote warfare and fighting? Instead of show-<lb /><lb />ing that our country can accept the differences.<lb /><lb />in those we have labeled many infidels,? George<lb />Bush has proclaimed that we are on a crusade and<lb />has vowed to rid the world of its evil-doers!<lb /><lb />Knowing that both the words infidel? and<lb />crusade? carry religious connotations, our<lb />beloved president proclaimed to rid the world of<lb />those who believe differently than we. Not only<lb />did he practically state that he is going to rid the<lb />world of the Muslim faith (at least in the eyes of<lb />those in the Middle East), but he paired that faith<lb />with evil. If you were led to believe that someone<lb />thought you were evil and was preparing a crusade<lb />against you simply because you believe something<lb />different, wouldn't you try to attack before being<lb />attacked?<lb /><lb />Whether either side is right or wrong, itTs<lb />pointless to send our citizens to another country<lb />to kill or be killed, when we have already wit-<lb />nessed the frivolousness of war. Instead of trying<lb />to resolve issues by fighting, which our parents<lb />taught us solves nothing, shouldnTt we do more<lb />to open the communication lines? No one wants<lb />to listen when they feel that they'll be ridiculed,<lb />therefore it is absurd to say that we have tried to<lb />talk to our adversaries! | 3<lb /><lb />A country that is impoverished, non-demo-<lb />cratic, and non-Christian will believe that the only<lb />way we will be peaceful with them is to press our<lb />belief systems on them. Maybe they are happy the<lb />way they are! ItTs understandable that they'll be on<lb />the defensive, so until we can show a little more<lb />compassion, we shouldn't expect them to act any<lb />differently that we would if we felt someone was<lb />trying to change us.<lb /><lb />Understanding that those in Iraq may not be<lb />evil-doers and maybe just regular people like us,<lb />perhaps our countryTs higher-ups will open their<lb />eyes and coexist. If we expect people to accept us<lb />for our differences, we should also accept the dif-<lb />ferences of others and not resort to war. Although<lb />people in the 60s viewed their youth as souls lost<lb />to the disillusioned idea that love can change the<lb />world, maybe we should once again look back and<lb />find the truth in that belief. In the words of John<lb />Lennon and Yoko Ono, Give peace a chance.?<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Paying for college<lb /><lb />How much should parents help?<lb /><lb />MARGOT ROGERSON<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Undoubtedly, when people decide to have chil-<lb />dren, an important factor is their ability to send that<lb />child to college now that tuition is at an all-time<lb />high. After deciding which college is most affordable,<lb />some parents are faced with another decision: how<lb />- much financial help should they give their child?<lb /><lb />My parents decided to pay for my entire<lb />tuition and a small monthly allowance that<lb />covers part of my rent. Other expenses (utilities,<lb />car payment, spending) I must pay for myself.<lb /><lb />One of my best friends, Amber, pays her entire<lb />tuition, fees and living expenses. Since we entered col-<lb />lege, sheand I have both had jobs, mostly waiting tables.<lb /><lb />On the other hand, I have friends who pay<lb />~for nothing. Some of them receive virtually<lb />_ unlimited funds from their parents. They haven't<lb />had to work outside of school since they came<lb />to college. Oh, there are a few who have picked<lb />up occasional jobs for some extra cash, but<lb />I still canTt help but think "It must be nice!"<lb /><lb />As I'm finishing my third year at ECU, my<lb />opinion is beginning to change. I am starting<lb />to think realistically about life in the real world.<lb />When I was a freshman, I resented my parents<lb />for forcing me to work-and go to school because I<lb />wasn~ able to attend every party or sporting event<lb />when I knew they had the means for me to do so.<lb /><lb />Amber pays her bills for a different<lb />reason. Her parents do not have the means<lb />to support her living expenses and tuition.<lb /><lb />That said, I no longer resent my parents for<lb />. their decision. If anything, I appreciate it more.<lb />Having a job and paying bills has taught me respon-<lb />sibility and kept me level-headed and organized.<lb /><lb />It would be nice to stop worrying about money<lb />_ and have my parents pick up the bill. I might be able<lb />to spend more time studying and participating in my<lb />education, but I canTt help but wonder how many of<lb />those other students will really be ready for the pres-<lb />~sures of "real life" and bills that come every month?<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />on<lb /><lb />ALIKE ANYWAY!<lb /><lb />ol oo Sean e ae<lb />"- pea<lb />{<lb /><lb />STAYS<lb />De ELA<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate Rants. That's right, good old Fox News. The<lb />same place that gives us Bill I can judge<lb />others for their sexual exploits while telling a<lb />girl I want her to rub falafel on me? O'Reilly<lb />and a handy soap box for Ann: I don't need a<lb /><lb />soap box because I'm eight feet tall and made<lb /><lb />of bones and plastic? Coulter was covering<lb />a story on a lawsuit filed against Starbucks.<lb /><lb />Apparently, the company wasn't paying its<lb /><lb />shift managers more than its baristas, so the shift<lb />managers would share in the tip pool of the rest of<lb />the employees, The lawsuit found that it was unlaw-<lb />ful for the shift managers to do so because they<lb />were the baristasT gratuities and for them alone.<lb /><lb />_ That seems fair, right? Fox News appar-<lb />ently didn't think so. Or, at least, their talking<lb />piece for the moment didn't. He went on a rant<lb />about how baristas don't deserve? the tips for<lb />the coffee being so expensive, citing a five<lb />dollar latte.? I usually just get a black coffee or<lb />a green tea when I go to Starbucks, and when I<lb />do, the price usually ends up around two bucks.<lb />I can't imagine lattes being that much more.<lb />Still, that isn't the point. The baristas don't<lb />set the prices, and people who give their busi-<lb />ness to Starbucks choose to do so. NobodyTs<lb />holding a gun to their head, making them get<lb />their coffee at Starbucks instead of at home.<lb /><lb />Unfortunately, the act of tipping seems to be<lb /><lb />_ a dying habit. From Steve BuscemiTs rant as Mr.<lb /><lb />Pink in Reservoir Dogs on how he doesnTt believe<lb />in tipping, to the modern excuse of I canTt afford<lb />it,? there always seems to be an excuse for people<lb />to not tip. Aside from horrendous service, I really<lb /><lb />can't think of a reason to not tip the people who.<lb /><lb />need those tips for their income. Of course, some<lb />people consider horrendous service? when their<lb />waitress allows their water to, dip below halfway<lb />full. So, letTs just assume that when I say hor-<lb />rendous service?, I mean rudeness and complete<lb />disregard for the customer. I can honestly say ITve<lb />never been to a sit-down restaurant and experi-<lb />enced service so bad I could simply not tip at all.<lb /><lb />People who work in the service industry,<lb />especially food service, are working a small<lb />scale of income that can range from two dol-<lb />lars below minimum wage up to just barely<lb />above minimum wage. Doesn't really seem like<lb />that lucrative of a career, does it? Many wait-<lb />ers and waitresses make such a small hourly<lb />income due to the assumption that the tips they<lb /><lb />make will compensate for that lacking portion.<lb /><lb />Where do you think that extra income will<lb />come from if they arenTt receiving those tips?<lb /><lb />Your, waiter/waitress/delivery person/<lb />barista is working a crap job, and you know it.<lb />ThatTs why you're making them do that work<lb />for you instead of doing it yourself. TheyTre<lb />working under stressful conditions in some-<lb />times dangerous places full of angry custom-<lb />ers and the aforementioned low wages. If you<lb />really canTt afford to give them the leftover<lb />change from buying your coffee, maybe you<lb />can't afford to buy that coffee in the first place.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Why women should try it more<lb /><lb />LISA ENSMINGER<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Why is it that nearly every girl is afraid<lb />to travel down to the weight area at the REC<lb />center? When I go to work out, I ask my friends<lb />if they want to lift some weights or work on the<lb />machines, and their response is always a NO!<lb />ItTs funny to see how girls can be so intimidated<lb />by macho boys working out hardcore with those<lb />weights.<lb /><lb />I must admit I am not as confident as I may<lb />sound about lifting weights with a bunch of guys;<lb />it took me some time to muster the courage to<lb />travel down to the land of weights. ItTs intimidat-<lb />ing to walk across the room by yourself with guys<lb />all around, watching as you go by because youre a<lb />girl. And when girls are lifting light five-pound-<lb />ers while the guy next to us has a 50-pound dumb-<lb /><lb />bell, it makes us feel a little weak. ItTs a shame<lb />that girls canTt do their daily workout or even try<lb />some weight machines out of fear. Whenever I ask<lb />girls why theyTre never down there, I get the same<lb />response: | donTt like the guys.?<lb /><lb />I think the obvious answer to this dilemma is<lb />for girls to get over it and just do their own thing,<lb />but that, as we all know, is easier said than done.<lb /><lb />Girls, of course, have much insecurity and are just<lb />not comfortable in their own skin. Maybe thatTs<lb />why some of us are there, to lose some weight or<lb />improve our figure. Honestly, we donTt want to be.<lb />around more than twenty guys while dressed in a<lb />pair of shorts and a sweaty t-shirt, and with a red<lb />face. We're not at our most attractive.<lb /><lb />So, what to do in this predicament? I really<lb />donTt have an answer, but here are a few ideas.<lb />When I venture to the weight area, ITm most com-<lb />fortable with my iPod plugged in. ITm so preoc-<lb />cupied with my music that I do not even recognize<lb />whatTs going on around me. For most girls, that<lb />probably isnTt enough. Maybe take a risk and go<lb />with a friend who might have the same fear. .You<lb />may be pleasantly surprised that you both can<lb />do it and feel ten times more comfortable than<lb />by yourself. ,<lb /><lb />Those are just two simple ways to overcome<lb />your fear of the weight room, but there are some<lb /><lb />other options. Gyms could encourage a weight<lb />_ program for girls in order to promote this type of<lb /><lb />exercise and educate us on the different machines.<lb />This would be a great way to get girls out there<lb />and really show off what we can do. Another is to<lb />set separate hours for girls and guys; however I<lb />don't think that is necessary. Show those guys that<lb />you donTt care if they are staring at you because<lb />they shouldnTt be looking anyway!<lb /><lb />I hope reading this article motivates those<lb />girls who are afraid to lift weights and really<lb />tone their bodies. I know the weight area isnTt for<lb />everybody, but I do know that there are some of<lb />you that are dying to get your behinds there to<lb />get that fine tone you want to accomplish. Give it<lb /><lb />_ atry one time. From 1988-1995, UT-Chattanooga won<lb />eight regular season championships and five tournament titles. In<lb />his last year at the helm, the Mocs made a surprising run to the<lb />Sweet Sixteen as a No. 14 seed. McCarthy ended his stint with a<lb />156-54 regular season record. _ |<lb /><lb />_In four years as,the head coach at VCU, the Rams winning<lb />percentage increased each season. ECU Director of Athletics Terry Holland said<lb /> in the statement. <lb />THURSDAY MARCH 27, 2008<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ SPORTS<lb /><lb />BASEBALL continued trom B&amp;<lb /><lb />ECU head coach Billy Godwin (right) talks with outfielders Brandon Henderson and Harrison Eldridge at Clark-LeClair Stadium.<lb /><lb />one out Brandon Henderson hit<lb />a shot that just cleared the right<lb />field fence. Kemp followed with<lb />his first home run of the day<lb />and after a Kyle Roller ground-<lb />out, Dustin Harrington took<lb />Stuckey deep down the right<lb />field line. ECU starter Seth<lb />Maness pitched well through<lb /><lb />the fifth, only allowing two<lb /><lb />runs. But he ran into trouble<lb />in the sixth and gave up two<lb />more before Josh Ruhlman was<lb />brought on in relief. Ruhlman<lb />closed out the inning with the<lb />Cougars trailing by one.<lb /><lb />In the bottom of the sixth<lb />the Pirates got rolling again.<lb /><lb />They hit back-to-back home<lb />runs for the second time to<lb />open the inning. Kemp hit his<lb />second of the day and Roller<lb />followed with a monster blast<lb />well over the right field*fence.<lb /><lb />The. Pirates put three more<lb /><lb />across before Henderson flied<lb />out to end the inning.<lb /><lb />Rulman then retired three<lb />straight in the top of the sev-<lb />enth before the Pirates got<lb />the bats. rolling again in the<lb />bottom half of the frame.<lb /><lb />Kemp again led off the<lb />inning for his record-tying<lb />third home run of the game.<lb /><lb />I was seeing the ball well<lb /><lb />today and I think that helped<lb /><lb />a lot,? Kemp said. I got some<lb />pitches that were probably<lb /><lb />mistake pitches that were up<lb />in the zone and I was able<lb />to capitalize. I think the day<lb />speaks for itself.?<lb /><lb />The Pirates scored four<lb />more runs on five more hits<lb />before Roller flied out to end<lb />the inning with the bases<lb />loaded.<lb /><lb />Bailey Daniels came on in<lb />the ninth to close out the game<lb />and the Pirates celebrated<lb />their first conference victory<lb />of the season.<lb /><lb />eae S dominating win<lb /><lb />showed just how explosive<lb /><lb />ECUTs offense can be, but the<lb />Pirates will have to play better<lb />in all three phases the rest of<lb />the conference play to avenge<lb />for the conference-opening<lb />series loss.<lb /><lb />ECU will travel to Flor-<lb />ida this weekend in another<lb /><lb />Photo by Jessi Braxton<lb /><lb />conference series, this time ,<lb /><lb />against UCF, before returning<lb />home to face in-state rival NC<lb />State on April 1.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />PAGE B11 °<lb /><lb />»<lb />, #9<lb /><lb />,<lb /><lb />~gee aeas<lb />,eoee eRe OS.<lb /><lb />Whatever your reason for<lb />needing a new computer...<lb /><lb />ee oe a hy<lb /><lb />INTREX is the place to get it.<lb /><lb />WE REPAIR<lb />DESKTOPS &amp; LAPTOPS<lb /><lb />m Hundreds of Parts in as<lb />&amp; Networking Supplies<lb />@ Cables &amp; Accessories<lb /><lb />H Customized PCs &amp; Servers<lb />@ Customized Laptops<lb />a as &amp; Ae tah<lb /><lb /># Local Service &amp; Great Rates<lb />a 9 North Carolina Locations<lb />m@ 78 Years in Business<lb /><lb />_INTREX<lb /><lb />Computers Made Simple<lb /><lb />Also open in Raleigh, Cary, Chapel<lb />Hill, Durham, Greensboro &amp; Winston.<lb />In business since 1988!<lb /><lb />3160-D Evans Road<lb />Ya) averce)iare) are) 6)) ale @x-lal (1<lb />nextig BESTBUY ae<lb />(252) 321-1200 www.intrex.com<lb /><lb />THE WORLD s FASTEST GROWING SPORT.<lb />$s<lb /><lb />Receive a GRANDE hot beverage<lb /><lb />at Java City in Joyner Library for the<lb />_ price of a tall Cexcludes smoothies, %<lb />iced beverages, &amp; Javalanches) oo<lb /><lb />Redeear sd only at th Lior rary Java City tacation.<lb />One ith this ¢ -OUBGR<lb /><lb />hier at iid of<lb /><lb />Sie li lt Ble BE sat Sl. te Ss SB th<lb /><lb />a<lb /><lb />MMA is 2 Sport with definite rules. which ave siriclly enforced<lb />all times, The competitors are highly trained and condition<lb />aihieles, No? affiiated or confused with other MMA events.<lb /><lb />eS a Pointe<lb />Sanctioned by NC Boxing Authority.<lb /><lb /></p>

The PiratesT will hold their first scrimmage of this yearTs Spring practice. this Friday afternoon.<lb /><lb />Scrimmages should<lb />- be full of intensity<lb /><lb />'~ ECU SID"The ECU foot-<lb />ball team entered another phase<lb />of its spring practice period<lb />Monday, opening the scrim-<lb />mage portion of the workouts<lb />that primarily emphasize team-<lb />on-team drills and feature three<lb />intra-squad contests - including<lb />the Purple-Gold. Game sched-<lb />wed for April 12.<lb /><lb />. MondayTs two-hour workout,<lb />conducted on Hight Field inside<lb /><lb />the Cliff Moore Practice Com-<lb />plex, was the PiratesT seventh<lb />overall and fifth in full pads.<lb />In addition, the session<lb />officially kicked off preparation<lb />efforts in earnest for ECUTs<lb />initial scrimmage of the spring,<lb />which is set for Friday afternoon<lb />at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.<lb />Honestly, I was disap-<lb />pointed in the way we came<lb />out today,? I know we can't<lb />survive playing the schedule we<lb /><lb />have with the kind of attitude I<lb />saw out there.<lb />Holtz thinks that the spring<lb />break and Easter break might<lb />have had something to do with<lb />MondayTs sluggish practice, but<lb />hopes the intensity will pick up<lb />over the next couple of weeks.<lb />We've had a good spring<lb />up until this point, so I hope itTs<lb />either an aberration or perhaps<lb />a result or downside of all of the<lb />free time we've had in the last<lb />two weeks with spring break<lb />and Easter,? he said. We cer-<lb />tainly need to regain our focus<lb /><lb />and intensity as we head into our<lb />last three weeks. ThereTs a lot on<lb />the line for everyone, even those<lb />who have experience.?<lb /><lb />Holtz and his staff also<lb />continued work Monday toward<lb />the formulation of the program's<lb />initial depth chart of the season<lb />after spending the first three<lb />weeks of camp evaluating fun-<lb /><lb />damental individual drill work<lb /><lb />and limited team action.
