<lb />WOON<lb /><lb />Ginn<lb /><lb />Legalize it!<lb /><lb />The prostitution pickle<lb /><lb />LARA OLIVER .<lb /><lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />So, unless you've been living under a rock<lb />for the past week, you've heard all over the<lb />news, radio and comedy shows about New<lb />York Governor Eliot Spitzer's girl on the<lb />side. The news lead to his resignation and a<lb />slew of news stories about prostitutes and the<lb />seedy world revolving around them.<lb /><lb />All this attention being brought to the<lb />illegal act of prostitution got me thinking.<lb />You know, I know I'm not going to make<lb />myself any more popular by asking this, and<lb />I'll probably get my feminist card (and all<lb />rights to own Volvos, hemp soap and Birken-<lb />stocks along with it) taken away, but why<lb />exactly is prostitution still illegal in the rest<lb />of the United States outside of Nevada? _-<lb /><lb />We all know that prostitution is the<lb />oldest profession.? Many of us have also<lb />heard the urban legend that the term<lb />hooker? came from Union General Joseph<lb />Hooker for the ladies who would follow<lb />his platoon for business. Prostitutes are a<lb />constant plot point in film and literature.<lb />They're far more accepted in pop culture in<lb />terms of seediness than acts such as murder,<lb />drug abuse or gang violence that often go<lb />hand in hand with prostitution. Dolly Parton<lb />never starred in The Best Little Crackhouse<lb />in Texas,? and Ive never seen the cliché of<lb />drug addicts raising a kid, used in place of<lb />one being raised in a brothel.<lb /><lb />Morality aside, there's no need for pros-<lb />titution to be illegal. It has existed for thou-<lb />sands of years and will continue to exist for<lb />thousands more. Why do we fool ourselves<lb />into thinking were stopping it by making<lb />it illegal? Stripping, pornography and even<lb />buying a girl dinner Just to get in her apart-<lb />ment are still legal, so why pretend we're<lb />making America more pure by outlawing<lb />the act? !<lb /><lb />If prostitution were legal the way it is in<lb />the Netherlands, New Zealand, Japan (well,<lb />its half illegal there. I'll let you figure out<lb />which half) and other countries, I guarantee<lb />you the only people who would suffer from it<lb />would be the drug peddlers and pimps who<lb />benefit off of the illegality of prostitution.<lb />Instead of relying on pimps to protect them<lb />from the law like so many are forced to do<lb />" a protection that often means regular beat-<lb />ings, theft and rape on behalf of their pimps<lb />" they would be registered with whichever<lb />state they're in and able to continue their<lb />work without being involved in other illegal<lb />activities.<lb /><lb />Registered prostitutes could also mean<lb />a slowing of the spread of AIDS and other<lb />STDs. If America legalized prostitution, we<lb />could have the same stringent rules applied<lb />that other countries adhere to. The male and<lb />female prostitutes would have to have regular<lb />checkups and would not be allowed to conduct<lb />business if they caught anything. As it now<lb />stands, many prostitutes avoid the necessary<lb />health precautions a person who is sexually<lb />active should take.<lb /><lb />If the law pulled its focus away from<lb />prostitution, wouldn't it free up resources<lb />~for other, more dangerous problems? Ive<lb />never had a friend who suffered from worse<lb />consequences than embarrassment with a<lb />~prostitute, but Ive had numerous friends<lb />suffer from drugs, gun violence, gangs,<lb />domestic violence, rape and other crimes the<lb />law could focus on instead of these various<lb />stings for prostitution.<lb /><lb />We're fooling ourselves if we ever think<lb />we ll be able to successfully get rid of pros-<lb />titutes, and turning a blind-eye to them<lb />" until someone famous is tied to one " is<lb />only endangering the lives of the men and<lb />women who go into that profession. You may<lb />say that legalizing prostitution will only<lb />increase the amount of people involved in<lb /><lb />it, and that may be true, but who are we to -<lb /><lb />judge? Every day we all do things we don't<lb />want to do for the sake of making money.<lb />How are we any different than those involved<lb />in prostitution? Maybe we're just jealous<lb />they found an easier way to make money?<lb />Either way, I agree with people when they<lb />say theres a problem with prostitution in<lb />America; I just think the problem is with us,<lb />not the prostitutes.<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />{ Your procrastination destination}<lb /><lb />THURSDAY MARCH 20, 2008<lb /><lb />PAGE A6<lb /><lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />I'm so glad Lent is almost over. | really miss gummy<lb />worms.<lb /><lb />Sa<lb /><lb />L<lb />WHEN I ASKED<lb />FOR A RAISE<lb />ALL I GOT WAS<lb /><lb />GAS, OL SET RECORDS AS DOLLAR FALLS<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate Rants. The key, as mentioned, is education. Edu-<lb />cation, education, education,? as my family puts it,<lb />is the cure for every social ill. Amazingly enough,<lb />even as I go to a university, I am still harassed<lb />by an intolerant group. Outside of the university,<lb />I have never experienced it; and unless you wish<lb />to believe in this kind of doctrine, then you could<lb />go your entire life without ever coming in contact<lb />with religious fanaticism.<lb /><lb />Almost twice a week now for about a month,<lb /><lb />I have walked by the library to experience the.<lb /><lb />righteous fury of the Lord.? I have been going<lb />to ECU for three years now, so this isnt my first<lb />experience with this intolerant fire and brimstone<lb />preaching, but recently it has been increasing.<lb />You may have no idea what Im talking about,<lb />so you should walk to the library in the afternoon<lb />sometime this week. Im sure they will be there.<lb /><lb />You will find a group of people yelling (preach-_<lb /><lb />ing?) at fellow students with such biblical quotes<lb /><lb />as Jews, Catholics and Muslims are all going to<lb /><lb />hell!? If you can manage to stand around, and it<lb />is your first time, perhaps you will actually yell<lb />back at them or get into a discussion. If you want<lb />some good advice, though, I would just sit down<lb />and watch them like television ... but not many<lb />people can just sit back and take it, so I watch<lb />them too.<lb /><lb />because I believe strongly that there is freedom<lb /><lb />of speech in this country, and if you choose to_<lb /><lb />agree with them, then thats that. As to whether<lb />or not I think youre crazy really doesnt matter<lb />in the great scheme of things. Another reason |<lb />can tolerate these people is that this is America,<lb />and I believe shouting your fanatic beliefs to a<lb />group of liberal students is like throwing fire<lb /><lb />~into the ocean. :<lb /><lb />On the other hand, there is still a big problem.<lb />Religious fanatics are at the core of many difficul-<lb />ties throughout history. From Jews to Muslims to<lb />Christians and now, apparently, back to Muslims,<lb />the fanatical message is the one always causing<lb />the problem. The people who follow each religion<lb />generally dont agree with or care about these<lb />fanatics, but as history shows the fallout can<lb />devastate apathy as well.<lb /><lb />So as I go about learning history, hearing<lb />tales of massacre, hatred and occasional genocide,<lb />I realize the intolerance lies with stupidity and<lb />vulnerability. Many of these raving lunatics have<lb />histories of violence and drug abuse until Jesus<lb />saves them. Now they have the righteous hand of<lb />God to slap down the homosexuals and wantons.<lb />Once again, to each his own, but why is it that<lb />the university sanctions this blatant attack on<lb />individuals and personal choice?<lb /><lb />You're not allowed to just come onto campus<lb />and preach unless you have a permit to do so, so in<lb />turn the university invites these hateful individu-<lb />als onto campus to harass us. For a school with a<lb />zero tolerance drug policy, Im amazed it allows<lb />hateful, non-ordained ministers? who spread no<lb />true Christian dogma.<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Ronnie Woodward<lb />Sports Editor<lb />Arianne Swanek<lb /><lb />Lizz Wells<lb /><lb />Matthew Parker<lb /><lb />A woman<lb />President<lb /><lb />America isnt ready<lb /><lb />ANDREA ROBERTSON<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />America: a country of equality where<lb />everyone's opinion counts and that has<lb />rejected all prejudices. We reside in a coun-<lb />try that, in its short life, has overcome many<lb />obstacles and developed a form of government<lb />that has proven to be beneficial for many of<lb />its citizens. However, we have not completely<lb />risen above certain stigmas; specifically,<lb />America is not ready to beled by a female.<lb /><lb />Many women are strong and ambitious,<lb />and would be just as capable of governing<lb />as a man; however, we have not reached the<lb />maturity level as a whole to introduce such an<lb />idea. Too many issues arise, and insecurities<lb />materialize. It almost seems that a female<lb />president would be a detrimental blow to the<lb />country instead of a stride in equality.<lb /><lb />With our soldiers overseas and war<lb />enveloping our nation, by replacing a male<lb />president with a female, no matter how<lb />strong she is, our people will be fearful of our<lb />military forces deteriorating. During a time<lb />of combat, a country that has always been<lb />controlled by men should not be turned over<lb />to the sex that is viewed as nurturing and<lb />caring. We need a leader who may plan to do<lb />everything in his power to end and prevent<lb />the possibility of war, but who also appears<lb />intimidating to Americas adversaries.<lb /><lb />A common opinion of America is that we<lb />are a big bully who gets into other countries:<lb />business. This is somewhat true; we have<lb />aided. in wars that originally had nothing<lb />to do with us. But by entering those wars<lb />and, with few exceptions, winning, we have<lb />formed a reputation that promotes fear. With<lb />the lack of respect toward, women in many<lb />Middle Eastern countries " and lets face it,<lb />most people view those countries as a threat<lb />to our way of life " our enemies may view<lb />a woman leading our nation as a prime time<lb />to attack, and we would be engulfed by yet<lb />another war. :<lb /><lb />The citizens of America have suffered<lb />from the damaged economy spawned from<lb />war since 2001. If we were to elect a woman<lb />president, and more war ensued, then it would<lb />be even harder for the people to ever consider<lb />electing another woman as president.<lb /><lb />Not only would foreign policy in the<lb />Middle East suffer from a lack of respect for<lb />a woman president. Japan, the second highest<lb />monetary contributor to the United Nations,<lb />does not revere women as leaders. Japan, a<lb />country staunch in tradition, would probably<lb />find it hard to seriously consider the advice<lb />of the United States if it were to be led by a<lb />woman. Fear of a loss of power among other<lb />nations, is something the American people<lb />would have to face if a woman were elected<lb />president.<lb /><lb />Its true that America could probably<lb />handle the change of power from man to<lb /><lb />woman, but taking into consideration the<lb /><lb />opinions and repercussions from other coun-<lb />tries is something we must deal with before<lb />we can take that step. In this country, sexism<lb />is largely an issue of the past, but it has not<lb /><lb />~been conquered in much of the world. The<lb /><lb />day will come when equality of the sexes<lb />has spread to every nation, but until that<lb />day, we are not prepared to take on the chal-<lb />lenges that will come from electing a woman<lb />president.<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Sarah Campbell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb /><lb />Natalie Jurgen<lb /><lb />News Editor Asst. KEYS TO GETTING THE THING RIGHT:<lb /><lb />Dont pick last years bracket.<lb /><lb />Everyone remembers the 2006 NCAA Tournament when 11th-seeded George<lb />Mason defined the term Cinderella by beating Michigan State, North Carolina,<lb />Wichita State and Connecticut en route to a magical Final Four berth. No one<lb />remembers that in 2007, that same George Mason team didnt even make the<lb />NCAA Tournament. Also in 2006, fourth-seeded LSU made a surprise trip to the<lb /><lb />Look at where the games are being played<lb /><lb />SS The tournament committee rewards the higher- seeded teams by letting them<lb />play as Close to home as possible. The problem is setting up these 64-team brackets<lb />isn't easy, and some teams consequently get distinct advantages or disadvantages<lb />when it comes to travel.<lb /><lb />Travel plays a huge role in these games. Just think about it: Team A has to board<lb /><lb />_a plane and fly hours, or even across multiple time zones, to play Team B, which<lb />grabbed a bus and is playing in a familiar state, with a huge contingency of its fans<lb />right behind the bus. Even though teams get to their playing location usually days<lb />before the game, the players bodies arent going to get used to the time change in<lb />enough time, not to mention the kind of weird stuff that can happen when you try<lb /><lb />to fly an entire basketball program across the country.<lb /><lb />Just ask the Arizona Wildcats how tough this can be. In 2004, Arizona lost its<lb />first round game, played in Raleigh, N.C. Last year, Arizona, a preseason top-5 team,<lb />lost again in the first round, this time in New Orleans. This year, the Wildcats made<lb />the return trip to Raleigh.<lb /><lb />Be wary of teams from the west, especially in the Pac-10, that are forced to play<lb />their first round games on the east coast.<lb /><lb />On the other hand, some teams dont even have to board a plane. North Carolina<lb />has only lost one NCAA Tournament game played in the state of N.C., and this<lb />year, the Heels won't have to leave the state until the Final Four round, if it makes<lb />it that far.<lb /><lb />Also, Texas has to play its first two games in Little Rock, Ark., but after that;<lb />the Longhorns will get to play every single game, including all Final Four games,<lb />in the state of Texas. .<lb /><lb />Pick: South Alabama, Davidson; Texas |<lb /><lb />Avoid: Gonzaga, Arizona, Pittsburgh<lb /><lb />Final Four, and just like its Cinderella counterpart, didnt make the tournament<lb />the following year.<lb /><lb />In 2004, Georgia Tech made it to the national championship game as a Na. S<lb />seed. The following year, the Yellow Jackets didnt make it past the first weekend.<lb />Fifth-seeded Indiana pulled off the same feat recently, making it to the title game<lb />in 2002, followed by a second-round loss in 2008.<lb /><lb />The point is, ifa team made a run? farther than expected in last year s tourna-<lb />ment, you can expect an early exit this year,.so don't pick them.<lb /><lb />On the flip side, a team that ee amet does well in the tournament that got<lb />upset last year is very dangerous.<lb /><lb />For example: Duke lost in the Sweet 16 as a No. 1 seed in 2000. In 2001, the<lb />Blue Devils cut down the nets as national champs. More recently, second-seeded<lb />Ohio State was upset in the second round in 2006. In last aed 's tournament (2007)<lb />Ohio State made it to the championship game.<lb /><lb />A lot of teams have the tendency to do the sae of the year before, for<lb />better or for worse.<lb /><lb />Pick: Wisconsin, Texas, Washington State<lb /><lb />Avoid: UNLV, Vanderbilt, Georgetown<lb /><lb />UNS. Davidson<lb /><lb />~Track =<lb />and Field<lb />Friday<lb /><lb />at. Wake Forest ,<lb />"AMDay<lb /><lb />Coaches matter<lb /><lb />= Some coaches just know how to win NCAA Tournarient games, and some just Guards win NCAA Tournament games<lb />dont. Coaching in the regular season is so much different from in the NAS. Tour-<lb />nament, and its because of preparation.<lb /><lb />In the regular season, a teams entire schedule is laid out mel before the season,<lb />and there is always multiple days for.a coach to prepare a gameplan for each team<lb />on the schedule. In the tournament, a team might play Friday night and then have<lb />to turn around and play again Sunday afternoon, which gives its coach one day to<lb />prepare for a team that it probably hasnt played before. This makes in-game coach-<lb />ing greatly important. Every substitution, every playcall, every halftime adjustment<lb />by a coach could make or break a team.<lb /><lb />Coaching is the No. 1 reason Why there are so many upsets in the NCAA Tour-<lb />nament. History shows that some coaches are out-coached almost every year in the<lb />tournament, and some have a knack for taking its team as far as it can possibly go.<lb />The lesson is: its not all about the players.<lb /><lb />Pick: Uconn, Lousville, Michigan State<lb /><lb />Avoid: Kansas State, UNC, Kansas<lb /><lb />I The NCAA Tournament is all about guard play, and if you cant name your<lb />national championship team's point guard, youre in trouble. Post players win NBA<lb />titles, guards win college basketball championships, its that simple.<lb /><lb />A point guard in college basketball is the extension of the coach, and that shows .<lb />as the tournament goes on. So many tournament games come down to the last<lb />minutes and its the point guards responsibility to get the best shot possible for his<lb />team during that time. Players. like Mateen Cleaves, Miles Simon, Khalid E]-Amin,<lb />Gerry McNamara and Bobby Hurley never made great NBA players, but they all<lb />led their teams to national titles.<lb /><lb />Teams that are dependent on their big man will not go as far as expected. Teams<lb />must have consistent, and most importantly, dependent play from its guards to make<lb />a run at the Final Four or national championship. °<lb /><lb />Pick: Xavier, Texas, UCLA<lb /><lb />Avoid: Kansas State, Georgetown, UNC<lb /><lb />~Saturday<lb />at Wake Forest<lb />All Day "<lb /><lb /></p>

<lb />PAGE B3<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ SPORTS<lb /><lb />THURSDAY MARCH 20, 2008<lb /><lb />Region Breakdowns<lb /><lb />RONNIE WOODWARD<lb /><lb />SPORTS EDITOR<lb /><lb />This is the region that most of the so-called experts are calling the toughest one. Even though<lb />UNC won't have to leave the state of N.C., there are many teams that could present challenges to the<lb />top-seeded Tar Heels. No. 2 Tennessee is a very streaky team, and if the 3-pointers are falling, the<lb />Volunteers could make a run. Watch out for third-seeded Lousville also. Lousville was one of the hot-<lb />test teams in the nation the last half of the regular season and lost early in the Big East Tournament,<lb />which means it is well-rested and looking for revenge. No. 4 Washington State is led by its guard and<lb />plays great defense, but playing in Charlotte doesnt help the Cougars.<lb /><lb />The Midwest region is the region of sleepers. There are four or five teams that have a legiti-<lb />mate shot at making the final four from this region. Top-seeded Kansas is the most talented team in<lb />the nation, but head coach Bill Self hasnt been the best NCAA Tournament coach lately. On the other<lb />hand, No. 3 Wisconsin is very well-coached and always seems to play well in the tourney. Also in<lb />the mix is No. 2 Georgetown and No. 5 Clemson, both led by its big men. Two sleepers to watch out<lb />for are No. 7 Gonzaga and No. 13 Siena. Gonzaga has the history of playing the role of Cinderella so<lb />dont rule out the Zags making a surprise trip to the final four, while Siena has the perfect makeup<lb />of a Cinderella team, as it loves to shoot the 3-pointer and knows how to play defense. This region is<lb />very compelling and should be very exciting to watch.<lb /><lb />Conference USAs Memphis heads the South Region, but winning it will not come easy. No.<lb />2 Texas is playing very well right now, and the Longhorns will get to play their Sweet 16 and Elite 8<lb />games in Houston. No. 4 Pittsburgh is also playing well, as it won the Big East Tournament last week.<lb />Third-seeded Stanford has a strong low-post game, and is very battled-tested, as it played in the PAC-<lb />10, which was the best conference in basketball this year. Another team that could make a run in this<lb />region is No. 5 Michigan State. The Spartans have been great at time this year, but very inconsistent. If MSU<lb />coach Tom Izzo can figure out how to make them play well, the Spartans are capable of beating anybody.<lb /><lb />This region sets up perfect for UCLA...on-paper. The Bruins, along with UNC, are one of<lb />the top-2 teams in the nation and UCLA gets to play to its first two games in Anaheim. Real trouble<lb />for UCLA might not present itself until after the first two rounds. The X-Factor in this region is the<lb />coaches. The top four'seeds (UCLA, Duke, Xavier, Uconn) are all extremely well coached and any<lb />of those four teams could win the West Region. Coach K (Duke) and Jim Calhoun (Uconn) have the<lb />experience edge over Ben Howland (UCLA), so dont think that the Bruins will easily breeze eee<lb />this region, even though they are clearly the best team.<lb /><lb />Donate Plasma<lb /><lb />and earn up to $170/mo<lb /><lb />Last month, we paid out $33,035 to 734<lb />good people. |<lb /><lb />DCI Biologicals is always paying out this<lb />kind of cash. SPORTS EDITOR<lb /><lb />This region is by far the most difficult on paper. The overall No.1 seed North Carolina could<lb />be tested in the second round by either Arkansas or Indiana but will defiantly have the upper hand by<lb />never leaving the state of NC until if they reach the Final Four. The other top seeds in No.2 Tennes-<lb />see and No.3Louisville are both very capable of winning the region The Cardinals are the better pick<lb /><lb />_ however as Tennessee has been pushed to the edge over the last couple of weeks and may have peaked<lb /><lb />too soon. As for upsets, I like No.11 St. Josephs to get to the second round before being defeated by<lb />Louisville. But my major upset in this bracket is Butler over Tennessee in the second round.<lb /><lb />This region is definitely the hardest to pick. While everyone is high on Kansas [myself<lb />included], the Jayhawks have been anything but consistent when it comes to the Big Dance sinc Bill Self<lb />arrived in 2003. Wisconsin also seems to be a team that is a tad bit over rated going into the Dance.<lb />Sure they won the Big-10 tournament but the Badgers lack a consistent offense. No. 2 Georgetown<lb />and No. 5 Clemson are both playing great basketball heading into the tournament and should prove to<lb />be a tough outing for anyone. My two sleepers in this region are No. 10 Davidson and No. 11 Kansas<lb />St. This region in my opinion will feature the most exciting matchups, especially the opening round<lb />games between Kansas St.- USC and Gonzaga "Davidson.<lb /><lb />Conference USA member Memphis anchors the South Region and will have a punchers<lb />chance of making in to the Final Four in another region that features 4-5 teams realistically having the<lb />chance of making a run to San Antonio. The No.2 Texas Longhorns stick out the most in this region<lb />as they will be able to play their second weekend of games in Houston assuming they get by the first<lb />and second rounds. No. 3 seeded Stanford has a great low-post game and will be very tough to beat.<lb />The No.5 seed Michigan State Spartans usually make a run this time of year and this year seems to<lb />be no exception. Just add No, 4 Pittsburgh to the mix you have yourself one fine bracket that surely<lb />anyone will expect the unexpected to happen.<lb /><lb />The West region is set up perfect for the UCLA Bruins. In fact, I would almost call them a<lb />lock to be in the Final Four if there ever was one in March. The only two teams that could possibly<lb />give UCLA any problems are No.2 Duke and No. 4 Uconn. I dont see Duke making it very far as<lb />they seem to be running off fumes going into the tournament and Uconn peaked a couple weeks ago.<lb />This region should be quite the cakewalk for the Bruins to are to the Final Four for the third straight<lb />season.<lb /><lb />|<lb />|<lb /><lb />Hearty Sandwiches!<lb />Delicious Soups!<lb />Freshly Tossed Salads!<lb />| | Espresso Drinks!<lb />Bagels, Breads<lb />el Pastries!<lb /><lb />516 Greenville Blvd.<lb /><lb />Phone: 252-317-8787<lb />Fax: 252-317-8786<lb /><lb />Monday-Saturday:<lb />6:30am - 9:00pm<lb />Sunday:<lb />7:30am - 9:00pm<lb /><lb />' Buy One, Get One FREE,<lb />f " Salad, or You-Pick-Two<lb /><lb />C3 equal or lesser value.<lb /><lb />Valid at Panera Bread Locations in Greenville.
